[Q] how do i install custom boot on my rooted evo - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i have a HTC EVO 4G, i rooted it using UnRevoked.
im trying to install deception boot on my evo.
i put the zip in my SD and tried to zip it in recovery mode
that didn't work, im very new to all this. so any help would be appreciated.
thank you

are you sure you are fully rooted? have you ever performed a nand backup? you should. if you are fully rooted then a very simple way to change your boot animation would be to download the app from the market "absolute system root" by [email protected] it allows you to preview different boot animations (currently 106 compatible with the HTC Evo) and allows you to download the .zip file. it also installs it for you into the correct location without using adb
also works for other phones just read the comments and see what all phones people have confirmed it to work with
try it out any questions just ask
EDIT:deception is 1/106 available
i take no credit for his application although i do support it

how does it work do u d/l a boot animation and then save it to the sd card and used the app to view and install it?

To install a new boot animation, you need to download the boot animation which should be in PC36IMG.zip format. place that on the root of your SD card, power your phone off, and back on while holding Volume down. Your HBoot screen will detect the PC36IMG.zip file and will then prompt you to install it. If this is not happening you are doing it wrong. There are guides on how to do this in the Themes section.

i thought this was how you change the splash screen not the boot animation. but i might be wrong. but whatever the case changing the boot animation is pretty easy. i use a program called push boot, i found it here in the forums. but you do have to have adb installed and working. i would also recommend that you learn to use adb not to the extent of using it on a daily basis but at least having it installed and getting comfortable with the commands because you just never know when you will need it. and better to have it now then later. but thats just my .02.

if you download absolute system root tools it allows you to browse any of the 100+ boot animations he provides and allows you to download them and install them (as long as you are rooted) without any use of adb.. very quick and easy you should check it out
i tried posting the link but it wouldnt let me it is available via the market

[Q] Can't make backup for DINC+SLCD

My phone is working right now.
I read tons of forums and info about rooting - doesn't mean I know much about it.
If it helps in your replies, please note I am a linux expert and I don't need help understanding file systems, files, busybox commands, etc.
I followed jonsuh dot com's guide entitled /2010/11/ "root-your-droid-incredible-how-to" [I've heard I can't leave links, hence I obfuscated it]
phone is new, nothing installed (well actually, just ConnectBot for ssh, and the verizon&htc bloatware)
specs
htc incredible with SLCD
hboot 0.92.0000
radio 2.15.00.07.28
installed the modified android usb driver for my windows 7 32bit machine
started the reflash_package.exe from unrevoked
selected the cwm slcd recovery image
set my phone to usb debug
plugged in phone to pc
clicked ok in unrevoked to begin flash
6 minutes pass with reboots
hboot shows S-OFF and cwm boot
phone starts up, applications show superuser permission
ok fun, everything i read says to make backups before i do anything. note that all i want to do is remove the bloatware, that's the only reason i'm here!
so, i install rom manager from the market
i allow unknown sources at this point
i try to choose "Backup Current ROM" - error message says I need cwm recovery
so, first option in rom mgr, "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery", i select that one
I give it root access
Next, I select "Backup Current ROM"
phone reboots, screen bricked (black with white bars)
I freak out here ... bad (swore a couple times, not my style)
So, I go to hboot (cwm), select recovery, screen goes white with black lines on side and one at the bottom...I let it sit for 10 minutes
Pull battery
Reboot, phone works again
This time I return to ROM Manager, ROM Manager now things cwm recovery is installed
I select "Backup Current ROM"
Phone reboots
screen black with white bars on side
I reboot to cwm, select recovery, wait 6 minutes
Pull battery
Reboot, phone works again
And that's where I am right now. I'm not going to even touch ROM Manager until I feel confident I'm not going to jack up the slcd drivers again.
Thanks to everyone in advance!

ok have 2 things for you to try
1: make sure you have enough room to create a nandroid backup on your SD, as this has cause problems for people in the past.
2: find amon RA recovery .img in that allows you to flash in h-boot
Being computer savvy like you say i would think you wouldnt pull the battery while its making a back up, i know it feels like its a long time when your screen is black but trust me its doing its thing u just cant see. But above all i honestly reccomend AMON RA recovery for the droid incredible as it fixes the issue with the slcd...hope this helps
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=758874 heres the link for AMON RA just follow the flashing directions and remeber wont be able to use rom manager with this other than just to simply boot into recovery, but honestly I think rom manager isnt that useful anyway IMO
I'm amazed how much I see this advise I don't remember where I read it but there is a version of cwm that you can use when using unrEVOked, I am running it on my phone as I type this. I don't have it with me atm but ill post it and how to get unrEVOked.to use it.instead of the one it is installing.
putting it back together again
Austin:
I enjoy your jab at me for claiming to be savvy and yet careless for removing the battery during such a critical operation. I knew making such claims would surely invite the least of comments like yours . As you point out, it is difficult to wait patiently in high stress situations.
1. Make sure there is sufficient space on the SD card.
> There is 1.61 GB free of 1.81GB
> The SD is FAT formatted
2. Get AmonRa
> Roger. Download completed.
Should I use unrevoked to 'push' amonra to my phone? Oh, you say that site has flashing instructions. I'll review them.
I now have strong objections to using ROM Manager - I have been burned. So, if you say it is not that useful, well, I'm an easy sell. How do you recommend I create a backup?
jmc:
I used the version of cwm that was specifically built for SLCD screens. It was (to my best guess) ROM Manager's fault (perhaps it ships with a bad cwm that it flashed over my good one). Had I used a bad cwm initially with unrevoked (note, I did not run the default option with unrevoked, but selected a custom recovery image - as per jonsuh's guide that I linked) I would have had a screen-brick from the very beginning.
Austin:
I assumed that my new stock phone would not have HTC Sync (read somewhere to remove it if you've added it, which I haven't), but when I browsed the phone on my pc with a usb link, I saw that the phone's drive has HTC_Sync_2.0.40.exe. I would guess that this exe would be presented to my windows machine if I were to choose 'htc sync' on the phone when connecting (as opposed to charge only or removable drive). Am I wrong? Should I be concerned about this?
So my next step is to start reading about amonra - and then prepare to flash the drive.
Thank you very much,
Payo
yea just download the AMON RA recovery boot into H-BOOT (volume down+power) and it will automatically pick up the file and promt you to update simply click yes and after its done select recovery from H-BOOT menu and boom you will now see AMON RA then procede to complete your nandroid back up
http://www.incredibleforum.com/forum/htc-incredible-hacks/5721-i-rooted-now-i-only-see-black-screen-white-bars-recovery.html
In the crosshairs
"download the AmonR RA recovery boot into H-BOOT"
I think what you're saying is to copy the amonra to the sd card's root dir (named PB31IMG.zip) and allow update, then select recovery. My only concern -- what if something goes wrong? Heh, I just feel there is no safety net. Does a stock version PB31IMG.zip for my incredible+slcd exist out there for download? Or can I always depend on the 'revert to stock' option in h-boot?
"then procede to complete your nandroid back up"
With what tool? How? I've not found anything on this that makes sense to me.
Appreciated

Ok you PM'ed me, so here's what I'll do:
Get fastboot, make sure it is in /yoursdk/tools
- fastboot oem rebootRUU
- fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-2.0.img
- fastboot reboot
- done
Note that AmonRA and CWM are not compatible.
A side note: Without pointing a finger, I'd still think about whether you really need S-OFF or not, it's ment for developers and people that are ready to brick the phone for the sake of it.
Hope this helps
no s-off needed
1. Why fastboot and not an update drop on the sdcard/PB31IMG.zip? A lot of people opine the update method is preferred.
2. I'm nervous about ruu bc I've not read anything about it (and it takes me hours of reading before I feel safe to procede with these things).
3. In this thread I was pointed to RA 1.8.1, and you suggest 2.0. I saw 2.0 was the latest, but was concerned it was for the HTC GSM Desire only. (according the post I saw about 2.0 by amon_ra himself).
4. I don't care to test roms, only remove bloatware and have su -- I can see why I don't need s-off for this (but unrevoked just seemed the most reliable method at the time). Can I turn s-on without reverting to factory? How would you recommend I do this? [note, i am a developer, but anything to protect me from bricking!]
5. I've installed the CWM recovery...but (oh noob i am) does that mean i'm running cwm? I don't think I am. I don't want a custom mod. Clockwork is the boot level tool, and there is a mod, clockworkmod as well, right? Oof..given how much I've read, I would think this would be clear to me by now.
Again, much thanks to everyone,
Payo
If I am following what you are saying you are seeing the issues with the cwm that is suppose to work with SLCD screens then thats odd, I havent had any issues with it, besides rom manager not being able to reboot into recovery 9dont know if thats the recovery's fault though.) Just in case you havent tried it try this one though, its the one I was talking about.
For any future browsers, and just fyi, in order to change the recovery that is installed using UnrEVOked once the program is loaded up you click file in the top left corner and then select custom recovery, then browse to where you downloaded the recovery.img to.
you CANNOT use the clockwork mod recovery that comes with unrevoked for SLCD inc. results in black screen with white bars.

[Q] Root without being able to boot? 8 hours research - no answers yet.

Hello,
Mytouch 3G slide
- won't boot to OS or recovery - just mytouch splash screen
- never been rooted
- loads HBoot
- can access fastboot
- will not boot into recovery - just mytouch splash screen
- I went through steps to flash rom etc..
- can not get adb access because can't get to OS the enable usb debug etc..
- can't do anything through fastboot because remote not allowed - but it does communicate with phone
- esprimg.zip on sd card results in "older version in main error"
It feels like I've gone through every option possible to recover.
It seems like if I can get root then I can flash a new rom and be back in business? But I can't get root so I can't flash.
Any other ideas out there? Thanks!
have you tried a different sd card?
Yes, 2 different ones. the .img is being read then checked then it comes up with the "older version" error. Everything I could find about that says I need to push a few files with adb first but I can't do that because I can't get to root since I can't boot to OS. Thanks.
Edit: Just kidding I lied don't download that ESRIMG.zip as it is the Engineering build and that is what you are probably using too and that is why it is giving you errors! So... Hold tight for a bit while I get everything together because I want this to work for you.
Bro I have a solution but it will set you back to stock. Okay so here it is, You are going to have to flash the champion build(Stock Rom for the slide) which can be found here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=713507 , After you download that put it on the root of your SD card (Now I know what you are going to say "I can't access my SD card without being able to boot into the rom!" WRONG!!) get a MiniSD Card reader. Once you are able to put on the root of the SD card if not done already rename it to ESPRIMG.zip and then boot into HBOOT ( Hold Power + Volume Down, but you already know that don't you?) It should automatically check for the ESPRIMG.zip and it will load. Push Volume up to apply the update. DO NOT POWER DOWN OR REMOVE THE BATTERY AS IT WILL LEAVE YOU WITH A HUNDRED DOLLAR PAPER WEIGHT!!! When the update completes press volume up to reboot. You should now be able to boot, but now you don't have root so (Oh wait you never did! Why???)... NEW ROOT METHOD FTW!!! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=896148 So once you complete the rooting be more careful, I cannot emphasize this enough! (BTW if you do root I recommend the CM7 Nightlies!!!) But if my foolproof tutorial that I wrote just for you doesn't work then your phone is F**ked up man! Call HTC for Warranty purposes cuz there is a problem! And if that works Well you are welcome!
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide with Gingerbread because I can! using XDA App
Thanks for the suggestion. I downloaded the esprimg(2).zip, renamed it and put it on the root of SD. HBoot finds it and says loading. It goes throught the load then say s checking image. Then it says:
Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
Vol Up - Yes
Vol Down - No
It doesn't matter what I do at that point. A reboot is a reboot. If I say no, it takes me back to HBoot.
Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks!
I have very similar issue and same result on scree, without USB debugging we cannot get adb to work, thus no rooting, thus no replacing roms.

Well, it appears it isn't possible to get to root without first being able to get into OS to enable usb debugging.
I gave up and bought a phone on ebay that was working except for a broken screen and replace it's lcd with mine.
I'm now back in business.
Thanks to all for your suggestions.

Can't get into Recovery

Hi I'm new to the mytouch slide family coming from a Motorola Defy and I'm having a hard time going into the recovery mode. Everytime I try get the red triangle warning. I've watched videos, read ROM bible and other post and still no luck. My slide is rooted by VISIOnary Temproot but with root at boot selected. I've been at this for 3 days trying not to bother anyone on the forum for a solution but now I need help!!!! Also I have ROM Manager and loaded Clockwork Recovery through ROM Manager.
Thanks-
Under ROM manager the 2nd option says reboot into recovery. Im pretty sure you tried that right? You can also get to this by turning off the phone and hold the vol down button and press power.
Oops. then select recovery
hoped this helped

Ive never heard of that root method. Are you sure youre rooted? You did say you used a temp root method. Every time you power down youre probably breaking root. First, download an app that needs root, like titanium backup. If it fails to load, you dont have root and that will be why you get a red triangle everytime. I would try rooting using a full proof way listed in the development section. Also, i dont use rom manager but i've heard of issues using that to get recovery.

VISIONary is used to temp root the G2. With VISIONary you can select to temp root your phone on boot, so that's what I selected.I tried it on my slide and it worked. May I ask what method you use? I will try the full proof way.

Htc sync? What would you need that for. As long as you phone is visible to the computer you shouldnt need htc sync. I know i have never used it

at the red triangle screen you push vol up + power I believe -- can't remember exactly and no longer have stock recovery to check with. But it is just another button combination.
HTH
Temp root apps don't root your phone, regardless of boot settings. You need to have the eng build flashed through hboot to be able to get into a recovery that will flash self signed zips such as clockwork. No matter what you do, without fully rooting using a method in the development section, you will not be able to flash clockwork or any custom rom. Temp root only allows you to run root apps inside of android.

As for that, it's the easiest way of obtaining the ADB drivers for the slide, as the slide is only plug n play as far as mass storage, not its adb interface. I'm sure there are other methods, but installing HTC sync is the easiest.
Need help!!! Recovery
I have succesfully root my girlfriends slide and s-off. but i tried to flash cwm 2.5 thru fastboot and now cannot get into recovery neither factory with triangle or cwm. How do i fix this or will i have to unroot bascially and start over to get the recovery .img again? Also, who can help with permanently flashing cw recovery so that i do not have to use the update.zip method.?

Did you try to fastboot flash the update.zip? That's not good, you should've flashed the cw2.5 .img file. No, you don't have to reroot or res-off, but download the .img file for the latest clockwork recovery on koush's website, for our device. Then, on your computer, while in fastboot mode and plugged into usb, type
fastboot flash recovery filename.img
obviously replacing filename.img with the actual file name/location.
Please help me figure this out...
I also cannot get into recovery mode. Here's my story:
I have a rooted (Supersonic EVT2-2 SHIP S-OFF; HBOOT-0.93.0000) EVO (I know that this is a MyTouch thread, but I couldn't find any similar issues at the EVO thread) that I'm running Warm 2.2 RLS 4 on. I have it set up the way that I wanted and it is running perfect (enough for me).
Yesterday, I caught a glimpse of the MIUI ROM that has an iPhone theme so I wanted to try it out. So, I used Titanium to back up my apps and data to my SD card (8GB with 3GB open). Then, I went to ROM Manager to back up my ROM. I saw that there was an update for the ClockworkMod Recovery so flashed it up to 3.0.0.5. Then I went to Backup Current ROM, kept the suggested name, and hit OK. After a few seconds, the Splash Screen briefly shows, the phone buzzes and then I'm on the initial Bootloader menu screen (with the three Androids at the bottom).
I highlight Bootloader, then I hit the Power button to go to the next set of menus, and the phone does it's checks. After the checks, I push the Volume Down button to go to Recovery, then hit the Power button. The splash screen (white HTC EVO 4G) shows again, the phone buzzes, and I'm back at the initial Bootloader screen.
Whether I use the Quick Boot app, the ROM Manager app, or the Power and Volume Down method, I cannot get past the Bootloader screen to get into Recovery. All I get is Splash, buzz, then the initial Bootloader. Warm 2.2 RLS4 is a nice stable ROM, but I am starting to feel limited, which is why I rooted the phone a few months ago.
Could someone PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZSSSSSSEEEEE help me with this? I am far from a comp engineer, but I can follow instructions pretty well.
Thanks a million!
njgoodfella2199: You're really going to be better off asking in the EVO forums. Good luck!
Yeah, we don't know much about the evo or how it works compared to our gsm phones. The way rom manager updates it may be different. You might be able to use the same solution, find the img file of the latest clockwork and fastboot flash it, but ask on the evo q&a.

[Q] Evo Sprint can't boot in, how to install recovery?

My Evo can't boot in android, it just turn on and restart after the Evo logo appear. And when I press power + volume down button I go in hboot mode, click on recovery and after that it's freeze with a picture of a phone , an "!" in a triangle.

The PC36IMG is the system file the bootloader recognizes as like a system updater. And did you select update and then to reboot, once prompted?

sorry but I don't see the "update" to choose.
I press power + volume down button => it take me to the hboot interface.
The menu there are : fastboot - recovery - clear storage - simlock - hboot usb.
5s later it start to run the PC36IMG file with no notification and log, very fast and disappear.
So, what would I do now?

Two things to double check, to be sure that that the bootloader will recognize PC36IMG. 1) the PC36IMG must be named exactly that. It has to be capital letters, and you do not want it to say PC36IMG.zip, just PC36IMG. The phone automatically recognizes and labels it as a zip file. So if you named it PC36IMG.zip, it will ultimately be named PC36IMG.zip.zip, and will not be recognized.
2) Be sure that the PC36IMG is on the root (main directory) of your SD card, and not within any folders. It won't be recognized if it is in a folder.
If you make sure of those two things, then the bootloader should scan and find the PC36IMG, and instead of seeing it searching and the green lettering pop up, then disappear, you will see it ask you if you want to update, use volume up to select yes. Hope that helps you out.
Edit: And yes, I went to download the PC36IMG attatched above in this thread, and it is indeed labeled PC36IMG.zip. Rename it to PC36IMG (just remove the .zip) That should take care of it.
Also, I never saw this confirmed in the thread, but you were previously rooted and had a custom recovery prior to this problem, correct? And you are indeed s off at the bootloader?

Two things to double check, to be sure that that the bootloader will recognize PC36IMG. 1) the PC36IMG must be named exactly that. It has to be capital letters, and you do not want it to say PC36IMG.zip, just PC36IMG. The phone automatically recognizes and labels it as a zip file. So if you named it PC36IMG.zip, it will ultimately be named PC36IMG.zip.zip, and will not be recognized.

My phone is not rooted, no recovery, can't boot into android ROM, just start and restart at EVO logo.
Help me to install recovery to flash another ROM, I hope it will wake up my phone.
Okay so it was never rooted? What did you do right before your phone stopped working?
do nothing
this is my friend's phone.
He give me to try to flash a new rom for it.
but it's not root or recovery....
Okay so it wasn't working when he gave it to you right?

If you're s on and not rooted yet, I dont think you'll just be able to flash recovery. You need to root it first, then flash recovery. You should download an RUU or a PC36IMG of a factory rom. That will get you back to stock. From there, you can run Unrevoked to root it first though (you need to be rooted to flash roms). I will attatch a link with all of the PC36IMG's (you run from bootloader) and RUU's (you run from computer). You can use either method to get the phone back to stock condition (what I recommend). You will at least be able to boot then. From there you can decide if you want to root it and flash a ROM. Read up a bit more also, it will benefit you.

thank you very much!
I'll try anything to wake up it, I thing it's not the Hardware problem because the phone can start but can't go in the OS. But, mine is Sprint CDMA Evo, do you have any CDMA stock ROM for me to download and flash?

It's not a hardware problem, well, most likely not. Download a PC36IMG from the link I provided for you. It's hard to say which one you need, but try this one first. http://db.tt/gqTAPS1. That is a factory, unrooted ROM for the Evo. It is the latest software, 3.70. It may or may not work for you (you may need an older one, but not sure) What you need to do is download that file, rename it exactly PC36IMG. Put it on the main directory of your SD card. Shut the phone off completely. Hold Volume down and Power simultaneously until you reach the bootloader. At this point, the bootloader should scan the sd card, find the pc36img and ask you to update. You would then press volume up to select yes. Once it starts, let it run through its course. It should take a few minutes to complete, and you will see a couple different screens. whateveer you do, dont pull the battery while it's updating, and be sure you're battery has some charge on it, so it doesnt die in the process. I hope that helps. If that update successfully completes, the phone should be exactly how it came out of the box. Factory Rom. Good luck.

thank you k2, I'm downloading and will flash it A.S.A.P, I'll tell you the result.
Bit off topic but not really...
My EVO was rooted running cm7 with the latest clockwork gotten from and installed from rom manager.
Ran fine for about a week. Then right after pressing send on a replied email, reboot!
Crap I thought I was gonna have to retype the whole thing again...
Nope, it turns out the email had enough time to send but the phone never did reboot.
Just got itself in a loop. White HTC logo, vibrate, white htc logo,vibrate...
Could get to boot loader but when trying to access recovery I would go back into the same loop.
Kinda gave me the impression that the recovery partition was corrupted.
I was already out so I thought "what the hell" and took it to the sprint store. The tech was looking and working on the thing for literally over an hour on my phone (took about 3 hours from when I brought it in). Then finally the tech came out and asked for me. I was positive he had finally figured out it was rooted and was gonna tell me to screw off. Well, instead he said "honestly, I can't figure out what the heck is wrong with this thing, I'm just going to replace it for you,I'll be right back".
OK so now I'm expecting a refurbed phone with my battery and ad card shoved in it. He came back with a new EVO box...
Then he handed me the new one with the 8gb (I only had a 2 in mine) card and the original battery (I have the extended one). Then he said "your card battery charger and everything else is in the box".
SCORE! Haha sometime I actually like sprint...
Moral of the story: if all else fails take it to the store.s

Hello XDA! This is my first thread on XDA, probably the first thread I have ever posted on my life, so please keep in mind that I am new member.
If you like this thread, or, find it useful in any way: Please press the "thank" button, or, if you are generous enough to make a donation, please press the "Donate to me" button on the right side of this post.
***** Original thread is here *****
***** Please thank Ivdoan (and donate to him if you can), he is the mastermind behind finding and implementing root for this phone *****
THIS THREAD IS INTENDED TO USE ONLY FOR THE SGH-S730m, AND NOT FOR ANY OTHER PHONE. I CANNOT CONFIRM THAT IT WILL WORK ON ANY OTHER SGH-S730 VARIANTS, SO USE THIS THREAD AT YOUR OWN RISK. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DATA LOSS, OR BRICKING THAT IS A RESULT FROM YOU CHOOSING TO ROOT. HOWEVER, IF YOU SOFT BRICK YOUR PHONE, IT CAN BE FIXED VIA CLOCKWORK RECOVERY (TO BE POSTED SOON)
WARNING ABOUT USING ODIN: IF YOU ARE A NOOB, ONLY CLICK ON THE BUTTONS I TELL YOU TO CLICK, AND NOTHING ELSE. I ACCIDENTALLY SOFT BRICKED MY PHONE BECAUSE I HIT THE WRONG BUTTON WHILE USING ODIN.
AND LASTLY, ROOTING WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY.
What you will need to do this:
What you will need before you start:
A computer with a internet connection, and running Microsoft Windows XP or higher, with at least one working USB hub.
A Samsung Galaxy Discover - SGH-S730m
Samsung USB Drivers: Here
UnlockRoot Free (you don't need the paid version): Here
The Odin Flashing program and Clockwork Touch Recovery bundle:Here
** Please click on "File" then "Download" inside of Google Drive
Rooting the SGH-S730m
1. Download and install UnlockRoot Free on your PC (here if you like to procrastinate). YOU DO NOT HAVE TO INSTALL BLOATWARE!!! PLEASE READ SETUP INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!!!
2. Download and Install Samsung USB Drivers (here as well). If it prompts you to reboot for any reason, then reboot your Computer.
3. After all of this is over, you have to prepare yourself for the hardest part of this whole process, and maybe the most complicated dilemma you will ever face in the entirety of your lives.
4. Turn on your phone if it isn't already. Wait for the phone to fully boot.
5. Plug your phone into the computer via USB.
6. Run UnlockRoot on your computer and click the "Root" Button (when it prompts you to install bloatware apps on your device, say no).
DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR PHONE UNTIL UnlockRoot SAYS IT IS OK TO DO SO!!!!
Congratulations, you have should now have a rooted SGH-730m in proximity to your hands!
DIAGNOSTICS:
If by any reason, you feel unsure as to if your phone is actually rooted or not:
Install a root checking app.
These apps will tell you if your phone has root access or not.
Try Root Checker from the Google Play Store.
Install a terminal emulation app.
In these apps, type the command "su" (without quotes). If you get "permission denied" you have not rooted your device. If it prompts you for root privileges (ie a popup appears) then your device is rooted!
Try Terminal Emulator from the Google Play Store.
If you are a n00b (like me occasionally), and you fail to understand why something works, or, the exact opposite: Don't worry! You probably thought the auxiliary headphone jack was the USB port, or, thought you should unplug your phone early, despite me warning you not to do that. That's okay, you can get it fixed.
If you somehow managed to soft brick your phone, or, it boots to a black screen, then you can also continue to the next step.
Installing Clockwork Mod Recovery
This is when things start to get scary. If you are a beginner Odin person, then you must follow these steps very carefully, or you might brick your phone.
1. Download the Odin Flashing Application. All you need to do is extract the folder inside of the zip and place it onto your desktop.
2. Right click on the .exe file inside of the odin folder and select “Run as Administrator”
3. Now that odin is running:
4. CLICK ON THE PDA BUTTON
5. When the file window appears, browse to the desktop directory (your desktop) and select recovery.tar.md5
6. Press Start.
DO NOT DISCONNECT, UNPLUG, PLAY WITH ANY BUTTONS, OR CLICK ANYTHING ON EITHER THE PHONE OR COMPUTER UNTIL ODIN HAS FINISHED FLASHING CLOCKWORK RECOVERY ON YOUR PHONE.
7. To boot into recovery, just turn of the phone and press the upper volume button.
That should be IT!
A TriangleAway patch (a way to get rid of the yellow triangle that might appear on boot) post will follow eventually!
Please post any mistakes (or broken links) of this OP below. I will try to fix the instructions accordingly. I am not always online, but it may appear that I am. Please post questions, or corrections on this thread.

I just bought a unlocked Galaxy Discover, so wanted to say thank you for helping get root on it.
has anyone started working on a new rom for it, or a way to overclock the cpu a bit to help make it perform a little better, 800 MHz is a tad on the slow side but usable, if we can get it bumped up to at least 1 GHz that would be a big improvement.

I bought mine unlocked from Amazon, and I've seen them for sale on ebay also.
I have seen sites that claim to be able to unlock the Galaxy Discover S730M so you should be able to get a unlock code for it.
I finally had a chance to try this out, was able to root with no problems thanks OP. MY only remaining annoyance with the stock rom is the lock screen. I'd like to replace the swipe to unlock screen that Samsung used on this with the stock ICS unlock screen. Can you recommend any that would work with CWM if flashed to the s730M?

6. Now shutdown your phone. Boot into odin download mode by turning the phone (release the power button as the phone vibrates) and holding the lower volume button and home key. Follow the instructions (press the upper volume button) to continue with download mode.
7. Inside of odin, press the "Start" button.
DO NOT DISCONNECT, UNPLUG, PLAY WITH ANY BUTTONS, OR CLICK ANYTHING ON EITHER THE PHONE OR COMPUTER UNTIL ODIN HAS FINISHED FLASHING CLOCKWORK RECOVERY ON YOUR PHONE.
8. To boot into clockwork recovery, hold down the upper volume and power key until the first vibration, then just hold the volume key.
That should be IT!
How to recover from a soft brick
YOU MUST HAVE A MICRO SD CARD WITH AT LEAST 500 MB OF FREE STORAGE SPACE TO DO THIS!
To reduce confusion, please remove any backups that you may already have (which would be funny, you wouldnt have to do this anyways).
1. Download the rooted stock CWM Recovery Image (.zip) I made from here, to your device (preferably a computer).
2. Extract ALL of the contents of the zip file to the root directory of your micro SD Card. The folder should be named "clockworkrecovery".
3. Remove the SD card from the remote device, and turn off the SGH-S730m.
4. Remove the back plating from the phone, and insert the micro SD card into the phone.
5. After putting the phone back together, boot into recovery by holding down the upper volume and power key until the first vibration, then just hold the volume key.
6. Using the volume keys as scrolling keys, scroll down using the lower volume until you see "backup and restore". Touch the menu item.
7. Touch the "restore" option.
8. If you extracted the zip file the exact way I told you to: you should see a menu option. If you didn't do what I told you to, you may see "No files found". If it says "cant mound /sd" (or something similar), you probably have a bad SD Card, or, forgot to put it in correctly.
9. Click on the menu item.
WAIT FOR THE PHONE TO BE 100% DONE RESTORING YOUR BACKUP TO THE PHONE! YOU COULD HARD BRICK THE PHONE (BECAUSE CWM RECOVERY WRITES TO THE BOOTLOADER). DO NOT TURN OFF THE PHONE, THE PHONE IS NOT FROZEN IF IT WONT RESPOND FOR A WHILE.
10. If you did this correctly, you should have a rooted, restored SGH-S730m!
A Triangle Away Tutorial will come soon!

Unless we have custom ROM devs for this device: there is no way to actually remove the samsung lockscreen.
Does anyone know what system apk handles the lockscreen? It probably requires some deox work on some system files.
If you are looking for an app, try Holo Locker from Google Play Store. I use it for both the 730M and I777. It can glitch though, but it works!

Thanks for the efforts
Bricked my wifes phone trying to get it to work on Koodo for picture messageing. Luckily I was able to use ODIN to load Clockwork loader and load your backup. It is back to a telus phone but for the first time since we switched to Koodo I was able to send a text from the Galaxy discover.
When I built a new APN for Koodo it showed up at the top and Telus was second. This was previously Telus at the top even though I had the Koodo enabled not the Telus it would not send a picture.
Now the funny thing is my LG optimus won't send a picture and I have changed nothing. Koodo is driving me nuts. and it's a short trip. http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

LG is working again?????
Latest in the Telus moving to Koodo Saga. Both the LG P500 and the Samsung SGH S730M do not send MMS. I loaded ICS on the LG from Oxygen and can now send MMS from the LG. Carrier shows as Telus. The Samsung recieves just fine but will not send MMS. I tried switching MPS code.dat in EFS to KDO from TLS but it did not work. Does anybody know what settings might be changed to make this phone a KOODO phone or think it's a KOODO phone. Or even a plain google phone. Thanks:fingers-crossed:

Are you referring to the customer sales code?
It is embedded everywhere in the Android operating system.
Commonly known as the CSC.
I will post as many locations of the csc code as I can find.
As a note, if you install Holo Launcher from Google play, you can add "activities" to your homescreen, giving you access to hidden apps that require dial pad access.
One activity is called "preconfig". DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL OTHER CERTIFICATES: IT WILL RESET YOUR PHONE AND THE CSC WILL REMAIN THE SAME: TLS.
I will try to help. I wish I knew more about this phone's structure.
