I have put on Android/DHD ROM on my HD2 and it runs very well (my Desire still runs a non DHD ROM)
its an old device with decent hardware.
most stuff nowadays is not far off what a hd2 is anyhow - and why would you want to dual boot anyway - isnt android good enough?

Just my thought, but probably cause it's great hardware with bad software. The Desire, or any other Android phone does not suffer form the ****ty software so it's less interesting to get other software running on it.

Yes, exactly what I was thinking. The difference between running WM6.X and Android on there is miles apart.

IMHO I don't care One os is enough to personalize, save contacts, sms, photos etc....with two or more I guess I'd get crazy!!
I have to agree - its nice to try/trial (I have a HTC Touch HD with the SD bootable version of android) and to play with - but one OS is decent enough I think...
There was a poll on the hd2 thread a little while ago and it looked like about half of the users were using an android OS now - so as long as you have that option you're doing alright!
I don't rate the HD2, I had it for a year. It's got a crap battery life, it's big, the one single bar for all of the buttons isn't a brilliant design. I don't care much for dual booting any of the five or more OS's it can run, the Desire is a far better device and I am glad I switched.
I have both the HD2 and Desire. For a every day android device, my preference goes to the Desire. IMO the Desire is a native android device and will always run android better. Even with nand on the HD2, it still has it's problems.
OK, So I'm shopping for a new phone,
I've been enjoying getting my feet wet with a comparatively low end model & am becoming somewhat addicted to constantly tinkering, have managed to compile my own kernel and now feel the need for an upgrade.
This (Desire Z) is currently at the top of my list as it seems to be well supported by the dev community & I really want a qwerty keypad!
So, as users of this phone & knowing what you know now...
Would you buy this phone again?
Well, I love my Z and i think it works fast and the keyboard is amazing. But the problem these days is: Dual core phones are coming out a lot right now, and even the fast processor of the G2 can't compare to that. So, as much as i love my Desire Z, I would wait a while for a Dual Core HTC (like the Pyramid).
But ofcourse: If you REALLY want a phone right now, a Desire Z with an Otterbox Commuter case is my recommendation! (since I personally love the Otterbox case, hehe.)

I hear what you're saying, my thinking right now is that in order to learn more about kernel & ROM development, is that I should be getting something that has a good amount of hacking & dev work behind it already.
The newer phones are less charted waters & I'm not experienced enough to be a pioneer
Will be sure to look at the otterbox case

Yep, that's also true. And indeed, there is alof of development going on for the Desire Z, it's great. And so many awesome roms to choose from as well.
As Hubba88 said, at this point, I'd wait for a dual core like the HTC Pyramid/Sensation. But, I love my G2 and am very happy with the purchase. Great keyboard, capacitive buttons are in the right place, very responsive trackpad. All in all typically great HTC build quality. CyanogenMod support is a huge plus as well for this phone.
If I knew that the z hinge was going to be so ****ty no,I would not buy it again. I'd go for a unibody design instead.

If the keyboard is important to you, as well as the tinkering aspect, then I reckon this is a good phone.
Not sure there has been much talk of dual core's with keyboards? So a real Desire Z upgrade may be some way beyond the next few HTC phones. Even then when they come out it takes time to build the developer base behind it and get rooting sorted etc. I moved a month and a bit ago and reckon there will be nothing to make me desperately want an upgrade for at least a year.
Look how well the desire has done and still does. The DZ has a better processor and more storage on board etc. The overclockability of the chip seems to be something that will extend its lifespan in terms of performance against the newer phones.
Always worth remembering that there is often quite a difference between phones being rumoured, then announced, and then actually on sale and being hacked. Therefore if a desire Z replacement is not yet in the rumours, it will likely be quite a while before its out there in the real world.
So yeah, I think its a good phone, although not perfect.
As I have insurance with my contract I will be OK with any problems with the Hinge - but none so far.
I voted yes but if I were in the market for a phone now I'd wait till the G2x was available and compare side by side. I suspect I'd get that one because it's newer, faster and has a more future proof AT&T compatible radio.

I've been following the Official thread on which phone should I get for some weeks which does talk about the latest & greatest dual core's an awful lot, but, as I said above the support & dev work that has gone into the DZ already is probably the biggest factor for me, it should give me a good base to work/learn from.

Re Hinge, well I can cope with that if it becomes an issue, the teardown & repair looks pretty straight forward.

Even 1.9 ghz is achievable . And I haven't had any problems with my hinge, it's pretty sturdy.
If you need a phone now, get the DZ.
If you can wait, wait until the quad core phones come out in 2012.
I love my G2 but I would not buy this phone again. With Swiftkey I find that I never use the hardware keyboard which was the main reason I bought my G2. If I could go back in time I would get a Nexus S or maybe a galaxy s.
Obvious answer is obvious:
Why get the same phone again when it has been 6 months since it first came out, therefore rendering the phone "obsolete", so to speak. If I had half a grand cash in my pocket right now I would wait for the HTC Pyramid (Their Dual Core).

we are building the sensation rom for dhd, will take some time though.....lots to do
Yup, you can follow the devs working on it in the dev thread! They have it sort of working now, although the different screen resolution seems to be a problem. However, they say it's working very smooth! No lag at all! So the 1Ghz is not a problem.
Just have to be patient for the resolution to be fixed... which seems to be a not so easy fix...
It runs fine on a DHD, I loaded the sense 3 alpha rom and it ran perfectly fine. It's currently non-functional and the resolution isn't ported yet.
+1 It's just marketing.
Maybe HTC is thinking on the battery life of their old phones.
Our 1GHz CPU has alot more work to do for the Sense 3.0 UI and they can't just shrink the already bad battery life.
That would make sense, as the Flyer is getting the new UI right? And it has the same CPU/GPU but a way bigger battery
now take a look at it again..

Could be to do with the current battery, but if you look at the improvements CoreDroid have made to their ROM, they have managed to get a much faster Sense ROM, but with much better battery, so surely HTC would be able to do this? CoreDroid claim to have better battery by 50%, if HTC managed to do the same, running a ROM made originally for a dual-core processor would result in the same battery life that we have now. Just think about it and you'll understand.

True, but most people that get Android tend to know what they are doing, am I not correct? If you have never used Android before, and your phones due an upgrade, surely you would go for an iPhone, due to the ease of use and the general market share the iPhone has. And even if you did go for a top spec Android phone such as the Desire HD, why, just a few months after you have bought it, would you go out and buy a new phone just because if a software update and a few internal changes? As far as I'm concerned, if it is HTC using ways of Marketing, then they will be loosing me as a customer. I've gone from a Desire to a Desire HD on a contract upgrade, I only chose the Desire HD due to the updated sense, and that's gods honest truth, and now, 5 months later, I'm being told that my phones spec doesn't match up to that required of the new update, despite the fact that to-date the DhD is the most powerfules phone on sale in the UK. HTC's gonna loose customers if they keep showing off shiny new things, and not giving it to so-called 'respected customers'.

Yeah I know what you mean, but 5 months is a long time in the technology world. Their marketing will try to convince anybody to upgrade since old stuff is not "good enough".
Desire HD is a SICK phone, I don't really see why to upgrade from it and that's maybe what they are tying to achieve with this marketing?
As you've said, noobs don't usually buy an android and if they do they probably go back to a iphone, so who are they trying to fool?

Thanks for helping confirm what I put, HTC are fooling nobody because I doubt a lot of people are going to get the Sensation despite the beautiful UI. W have already proven it can work on the Desire HD, and your right it is a sick phone! I reckon HTC will eventually release the full 3.0 update, due to demand, but it will be well after the Sensation release.

Hello Wildfire S users i have simple question!!!
Ive Own Blackstone and now i decide to move to Android platform but im tired of spending alot of money for a device and im thinking to spend this time smart my money so befor years i buy the Blackstone for around 650 Euro i will not do this mistake anymore to spend so much money for a device and right now im planing to buy Wildfire S the reason i want this device is..
Because i like the design and i like the size of it.. i think its Smart device and on the same time its super cool on hand and its just perfect size for me.
My question is right now with cooked ROM`s witch is the latest version of Android that Wildfire S can handle?
And do you are happy with the device itself?
I want my mp3 ringtones to sound cool and i think the wildfire S camera is cool also and make good pictures.
I don`t like the speakers of the Blackstone and i don`t like the camera because like you know there is not Flash and you can do images at dark places!!!
My question is what you think about the Wildfire S do you are happy with your purchase.. how is the Sound from the Speakers.. and etc and most importmantly..
Im planing imideately after i buy it to root it and do whatever is posible on the device but because i dont own it right now and im not familiar with Android alot i don`t know about what kind of Builds can hande.. for example in the future do you think that Wildfire S can have cooked SENSE 3.0 ?

I am the ex Iphone user last one which I sold my 4g , and I jumped on android , wildfire s.
I like the phone how it is specially the size simply to use most of the apps that i had on iphone I have on my htc , so if size of the phone is priority.
I don't like that I have S On but soon that will be solved , why not give it a try the only thing if you want to play with it make shure it has s off , so you can do upgrades downgrades etc.
For the sound I can say its very good clear sound and the other thing compare to iPhone you can imediatly put any song that you have as ringtone, I was amassed how easy was to import the contacts calendars and sms from other phone .
And the batery I think is a bit small if you use internet is not so satisfied.
Today for everyone is to have things that you can do job in easy as simple as it possible.
I hope that you will like it.

The wildfire s is a good little phone, the battery life is as short as most other phones.
Internal memory is small, but after rooting and using various apps it is easy to force move fixed apps to the memory card.
I use my phone every day, it's like a portable pc, and suits my needs very well.

well..to be honest I have it since some time now and regret a bit the choice.
I have rooted the device which already require an external device so you need either to purchase it or to find someone in your area who can help you out..you can find list of people on XDA forum.
The wildfire S so far is lacking focus from dev teams and support regarding available custom ROMs. in this forum there are a few, but compared to other devices the choice if by far smaller.
It might improve in the future, but it also might not..at the end I love its size, but low internal memory and ARM6 processor are underperforming compared to other devices (which on the other hand are bigger in size).
Come on..angry birds do not play well on the device..this already tells the capability of its hardware..
Internal memory is a continuous struggle..it's ridiculous, you love widgets (which are the reason why I choose android over IOS) but then you cannot really run many of them as you are out of internal memory very soon!
battery life is normal for a smartphone.
camera is just OKish..but still, is a phone and not a camera..so is ok for me.
It supports microSD of 32G, so I have plenty of music and the internal player is very good (lack of eq, but still a good player) and this for me is important as I cycle a lot and always use the music app.
Sygic is running well on this smartphone; so " turn by turn" navigation app in case of emergency is very well supported (eat up a lot of battery as in all other smartphones)..
Also sport apps like endomondo and Sportstracker are working very well
If you want a device of perfect size, that feels good in your hand, cheap, with a nice screen just pick this.
If you are looking for performance, or think you will get addicted to widgets and apps, maybe you should check out something else (that will be bigger and more expensive) or you will get frustrated as at the end with the wildfire S you always need to care about internal memory (until better custom ROMs will be released)

If you have some spare cash go for desire s. I'm a wildfire s user but don't mind upgrading cause I cook my own roms. and it's quite fast than stock.

I rooted mine.
You need to do it via a piece of hardware which either you purchase or look for somebody that has it to help you out.
I serched in the xda forum and found a guy in my area which had it, and with 12€ he used it to root my phone.
Once rooted is better.
On the other hand, as said..if you are looking for great performance You might be better satisfied by another phone (bigger and more expansive)
I'm concerned... My DHD is a super smartphone, but after all it's just a device that is getting "old".

The Sensation has good specs(although I played for a whole day with one, and it didn't seemed so fast), but lacks the beauty of the DHD.
SGS2 definitely has power on his side, and a amazing screen. But again, it's plastic body is hideos and overall seems like a larger Iphone.
So please tell me... what should I be looking at? I don't dig Sony Ericsson crapphones, nor other semimanufacturers like Motorola, LG, Huaweii or God knows what.
I guess an important question is, what do you need it for? That should inform your decision. (For me, I've never really seen the point in a dual-core phone, as I've never played a game on a phone and never will.)
Sensation and SGII getting old too - the next generation was in many previews, so wait for the future updates with better sound and displays and so on... If you want an actual smartphone, you have to buy one every two month. Dual and Quad Core are in all minds. They give you the chance for recording FULL HD Videos, navigate faster than before, play games with actual upcoming graphicchips...you must know, what you prefer. At this time the DHD has more abilities than the new HTC devices, because their resolutions are not supported by all apps. Also there are more specific roms and themes.
What do I need it for? What do you need it for? I use it at it's full potential, with games, various aps, recording, browsing, teethering etc etc.
Whoever buys a smartphone to use it a simple phone is not a normal person(no offence ).

Dual core processors still aren't being utilised fully yet. The Sensation is literally nothing over a DHD with an official Sense 3.0 ROM, it's all very much the same.
To be honest, you've answered the question yourself. Stick with the DHD, you'll be happiest that way!

I use my Desire HD with Sense 3.5 (RCMix3D Bliss ROM) and it performs very well. Once the bluetooth problem has been fixed, Capychimp will have an awesome ROM for us all...

I know what you mean. I got my DHD when the dual core phones were coming out, on purpose; I knew it was going to be cheaper, and I knew I wasn't loosing out much. I rooted from the very start, then worried that I had made the wrong decision when the SGS2 and Sensation came out...looking at everything now though, it's pretty clear I haven't
ive been on my dhd 4 a yr now nd havent been fascinated by any of the recent phones.....although i still use stock roms.....i love the sense interface so sammy is definitely out of the question. all dual cores as i have been readng havent really been utilized yet...im eagerly anticipating sense 3.5 update....it would b a new experience smhow. other than that i guess the only phone i wish was there is an android htc portrait slider...u know smthng like the dell venue pro for WP. Anyone thnks were gettng smthng like that anytime from htc?
Stick with DHD...because it same man...if ur next phone is sensation/sgs2...it will be outdated to...maybe will be a quad core cpu maybe...the technology in growing fast...haha

You can see it in my signature.. i was often unable to wait, because i wanted to test all new systems...at least the WP7 UI, before i bought my DHD. I think, WP7 style is a modern way to operate with a smartphone, but today no abilities to have an individual style. Android UI is a new form of windows mobile, not really futuristic, but i can change all i want. On the DHD it´s nearly perfect at this time.
Maybe in one year i will use again a WP7 phone, because i like many of it´s features, especially the menus inside and the live tiles (with another style). But i hope, that google won´t sleep all the time and works also on new interfaces. The last updates remind me to the times, when windows mobile was updated. I miss the really impressive changes... see, what will come in the next years.
I would wait if i were you.... even the so called dual core are being updated. Word on the street is that dual core 1.2-1.5 GHz should be the standard before the end of the year....HTC have some nice lineup comming soon
I took your advises seriously. Me and my DHD are friends for almost a year now, so it has a few scratches and dents. So, in order to complete our "new" friendship, I send it back to HTC for a complete makeover(new housing and a internal cleaning ).
