I Have An Evo 4G, Rooted With UnrEVOked Forever. Used Rom Manager to Install Clockmod Recovery And To Install Cyanogen Mod 6. Before This, I Put a PC36IMG zip that had Splash1 in it, from the unrevoked site and instead of saying HTC EVO 4G in a bright white screen, its UNREVOKED with bright white screen. it then goes into a cyanogen mod bootloader animation that i got off the market called Boot changer lite or something? and it loops over and over showing either the cyanogen mod title, or it just gets to the cyan dude with a skateboard but freezes. i tried putting different PC36IMG files and using clockmod recovery to push it on sd and load it, but it says

Flash a stock rooted ROM from http://goo-inside.me/evo/stock/ and then using ROM Manager, flash the alternate recovery (Amon_RA Recovery 1.8.0), then download CyanogenMod 6.1.2 ( http://goo-inside.me/cm/supersonic/stable/ ), copy it to the root of your SD card, remove any PC36IMG.zip, boot into recovery, and flash the ZIP from there.
how do i use rom manager when my screen is looping the boot animation over and over? i can flash stock rooted rom using clockwork recovery 3.0.0.2, and flash the recovery amon_RA? im sorry i am a noob and i would ask for step by step, not very detailed but to where i can know what to do first, if you have time?
1) Flash the stock rooted 3.70.651.1 ROM from my link above (here it is again), via ClockworkMod Recovery.
I'm going to assume you have an older phone with the older partition structure. For more information, and to tell what structure you have, check out this thread once you complete Step 1, before you do Step 2. I'm also going to assume you have the Android SDK installed and set up. If you do, just open your Command Prompt, cd to your SDK\platform-tools folder, and run the command "adb shell cat /proc/mtd" (without the quotes). If you see an erase size of 20000, then continue. If you see 40000, STOP and let us know.
DO NOT CONTINUE IF YOU HAVE THE NEW PARTITION ERASE SIZE OF 40000!
2) Once you boot up into the ROM, download ROM Manager from the Market, if it's not already included in the ROM. You will of course have to add your Google account in order to access the Market.
3) Open ROM Manager, scroll to the bottom, and tap "Flash Alternate Recovery"
4a) Once it has finished flashing, download CyanogenMod 6.1.2 using your browser at the above link (here's the link again). You'll want the file update-cm-6.1.2-Supersonic-signed.zip.
4b) Also download the attached FORMAT_ALL.zip. This will help ensure you don't have any files from Sense accidentally carry over into CM.
4c) Finally, download the latest HDPI Google Apps package from here (the latest one has a link at the top of the page, and is the gapps-hdpi-20101114-signed.zip file).
5a) If you downloaded via your phone, use a file manager of your choice (I like Root Explorer, but there's free ones like OI File Manager in the Market) to move the three ZIPs from /sdcard/download/ to /sdcard/ (aka, the root of your SD card).
5b) If you downloaded via your computer, attach your phone to your computer via USB, turn on Disk mode, and copy the three ZIP files to the root of your SD card.
6) Power off your phone, then hold down Volume Down and Power to turn it back on. If you're taken to a white screen with skating Androids on the bottom (aka, hboot), then press Volume Down until RECOVERY is highlighted, then press the power button.
7) You should now be at a black screen with yellow text. This is Amon_RA recovery. Press Volume Down until you highlight Backup/Restore, and press Power. Press Volume Down and highly Nand Backup, and press Power again. Press Power one more time to confirm the start of the backup. It'll then take a few minutes to perform the backup (depending on how fast your SD card is).
8) Once it's done, you'll be back at the Backup/Restore menu. Make sure Return is highlighted, then press Power. Press Volume Down until Flash zip from sdcard is highlighted, then press Power to select it. Use Volume Down to highlight FORMAT_ALL.zip and press Power twice to select it, then confirm the flash.
9) Once that's done, scroll back to Flash zip from sdcard, then select update-cm-6.1.2-Supersonic-signed.zip. Press Power twice to select then confirm it.
10) Finally, go back to the Flash zip from sdcard menu one last time, highlight gapps-hdpi-20101114-signed.zip, and press power twice to select and confirm.
11) Finally, select Reboot phone now, and wait. The first boot will be a few minutes (it has to rebuild its caches), but after it's loaded, the Tutorial "Welcome to your PC36100" screen will show up. Congratulations, you have CyanogenMod!
thanks aloottt mate! cm6 is runnning amazing, but where can i get my gapps back? just the gapps, i downloaded "youtube" and "mail!" but i click the app and it says Force Close Everytime? i have angry birds and all from custom downloads and theyre fine, just the gapps is what i want. can i get the market at least? or a substitute like appbrain?
If you followed the directions I gave, it tells you to download the gapps package, and flash it. Make sure you flash the HDPI package only, not the MDPI or MDPI-tiny.

There are a lot of similar problems on this forum, but after trying a lot i still can't get my DHD fixed... I feel stupid atm..
It happened when trying to install the Sensation v2.1 rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131063)
I followed the guide from this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964996
I started with making the phone Radio S-OFF and ENG S-OFF. This was succesfull.
BELOW are the steps from the flashing guide, the BOLD marked part shows the part it went wrong..
- Tell any people that might call you during the next 10-15 minutes to not worry
- Connect your phone using "Disk drive" to the computer.
- Copy both your full-wipe-1-3.zip and your rom zip file to your SD Card
- Make sure you copied them correctly
- Check again because once you full wipe, you won't have a rom.
- Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Install and open Rom Manager from the market
- Tap on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
- Wait for it to download (yes, you need a wi-fi or data connection)
- After it is done press "Reboot into recovery"
- If you get an icon with a phone and an exclamation mark in a triangle, remove the battery from your phone, reboot and then flash the clockworkmod recovery again
- Once you are in the clockwork mod recovery, you may use the volume keys as directional keys (up and down) and the power button may be used as Enter.
- I recommend you do a nandroid back-up. You must have at least 1 gb of free space.
- Select "Install Zip from sdcard"
- Select "Choose zip from sdcard"
- Select full-wipe-1-3.zip (It's right under those folders)
- Confirm by selecting the Yes option in between those "NO"s
- Wait for it to finish
- DO NOT REBOOT!!! In case you were not aware, you now have no rom installed
- Once again select "Install Zip from sdcard"
- Select "Choose zip from sdcard"
- Select your rom zip file
- Confirm your selection (just like with the wipe)
- Wait for it to finish
- Please reboot from the recovery menu and flash nothing else before you have rebooted
- Pop a champagne bottle, because it's done.
I was not able to select a file from the SDcard.. It kept saying "SDCARD NOT MOUNTED"
After that ive done some more:
- Format the card with SDFormatter and i've also tried in Clockworkmod itself but also there it said the SDcard wasn't mounted..
I've also read about a USB brick or something.. But to fix the usb brick u needed to put a file, update.zip, on your SDcard... which i couldnt load ofcourse.
At the moment i'm really frustrated because my DHD just wont start!!
It has no ROM.. At the moment it also stopped starting the Clockworkmod.. It shows a phone with a red exclamation mark when i press RECOVERY from Bootloader screen...
I hope someone can help me fix this DHD..!

Actually, at the moment i dont care if the ROM i mentioned gets installed.
I'd be SO HAPPY to have the stock Android 2.3.3 with Sense 2.x back!!!!!
Oke it now for some reason found the SDcard and i succesfully wiped the device again with Full wipe 1.5 EXT4 and succesfully installed the Sensation rom.
At this moment the systems just won't boot.
It freezes at the first screen u see when you boot the DHD..
Anyone knows what this could mean??
I'm sure you have done this but I'm going to ask anyway.
Do you have a nandroid backup somewhere in your computer? If you do try mounting the SDcard with a cardreader...some laptops have a built reader. copy the nandroid folder to where clockwork backs everything up and try restoring from phone recovery.
Since you are hung on boot...see if you can do a factory reset and data wipe...a wipe sometimes clears a rom not booting. then again...I'm speaking with experience from other phones not the Desire HD or any HTC for that matter.
Im flashing my GF defy green lense. I myself have a htc hd2 and im no novice when it comes to flashing and modding but the defy really makes my head hurt. its out of warranty and its been running really crapp. I want to flash the: [ROM][05.02.2012]MS2Ginger - Android 2.3.6
Ive managed to root the device but i cant seem to get Clockwork mod on it to flash. Maybe because its late but ive been following the beginners guide but im stumped what to do next.

Do you mean you can't install clockworkmod, or that you're having trouble using it to flash the rom? To install Clockworkmod, just use this app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212
Run the app and install custom recovery, then reboot the phone. The first time you reboot, the custom BootMenu will display. Use the volume buttons to navigate the menu and the power button to select an option. Select Boot > Set Default > Normal > Go Back > Reboot System. After the phone has fully booted up, power it off and reboot again. If the custom recovery installed properly, a blue LED on the phone should briefly light up each time the phone reboots (while the Motorola logo is being displayed).
To use the recovery, turn off USB debugging on the phone (Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging), then power off the phone. Press the power button to turn the phone on again, and as soon as the blue LED lights up, press the volume down button. The custom BootMenu will display. Select Recovery > Custom Recovery.

Root your DEFY and Install BOOTMENU - CWM (2ndInit-Installer 2.0.apk - install 1.0.7) or use this SndInitDefy_2.0.apk
CM7/9 and MIUI user can start with step 2
2. REBOOT
3. run 2nd-init (voldown on blue LED)
4. Go to "Recovery"
5. Go to "Latest or Stable or Custom Recovery"
6. "wipe data and cache"
7. Go to "Backup and Restore"
8. Go to "Advance Restore"
9. Select "MS2Ginger3.0"
Once i select Ms2Ginger3.0 its coming up with :
Clockworkmod recovery v2.5.1.8
Checking MD5 sums...
MD5 Mismatch!
Then nothing else. Ive had a look on the forums but i cant find a solution. Ive formatted the SD card as fat32. Ive re-downloaded the file. Do I need to do something else before with my factory 2.2 defy?

Did you unzip the "MS2Ginger3.0-RTM.zip" file? You have to unzip that file and put the "nandroid.md5" and "system.ext3.tar" files on your SD card in clockworkmod/backup/MS2Ginger. (The "MS2Ginger-Greenbread.zip" file should NOT be unzipped, however, and should be in the root of the SD card.)
If you did that correctly and you're still getting an MD5 mismatch error, try checking the MD5 sum yourself using an app like AFV (Android File Verifier), which is available free on the android market. (Open AFV and browse to the md5sum file, long-press it, and select “md5sum –c Type Check”.) Does AFV show a mismatch too?
ahh i didnt unzip. I dont do that with the hd2

All im getting now is system.img not found skipping restore of /system/.

Don't unzip it; just put it on the root of your SD card. Then boot into custom recovery, select Install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard, and install it. That will update your recovery to the latest version.
If you have a newly bought Samsung Galaxy S II X, a.k.a. SGH-T989D from either Koodo or Telus, then you are in the right place. Follow this guide to root your device, install ClockworkMod recovery or return to stock ROMs.
I decided to make this guide because the rooting/CWM installation method is a bit different for our Koodo/Telus devices.
ClockworkMod Installation:
A. First of all, install the latest version of Samsung Kies from the Samsung website. This will ensure that you have the latest drivers install for your device.

B. Download Odin. Inside this .zip file, you will find the Odin program (a Samsung testing application used for flashing certain partitions of a device), a configuration file for Odin that will pre-select appropriate options within Odin so that you don't have to mess with any of the options (this reduces the risk of bricking) and the PIT script (which Odin reads so that it knows where exactly on our device the partition going to be flashed is located).

C. Now let's learn how to put your phone into "Download Mode". The "Download Mode" allows Odin to write to specific partitions on our phone.
On our phone, while powered off, the key combination to enter "Download Mode" is Volume Down + Power. Hold down the keys until the phone vibrates and then let go of the Power key while still holding down the Volume Down key. A screen similar to the one shown below should appear on your phone (coming soon).
Press Volume Up to continue into Download Mode.
D. Run Odin. While your phone is in Download Mode, connect the USB cable into your phone and the computer. Odin should now be able to detect your phone on a COM port.
E. Now that your phone is in Download Mode and Odin detects it, you are now ready to flash ClockworkMod recovery or any other recovery of your choice to it. Following are a few links to common recoveries. Pick anyone you like. But if you don't know much about recoveries, I recommend you just pick the offical Touch ClockworkMod Recovery.

G. Press "Start" and it should now flash your device with the ClockworkMod recovery package. Once the flashing is done, your phone will reboot normally. Congratulations! You have successfully installed ClockworkMod Recovery on your phone.
Rooting your stock firmware (Requires ClockworkMod recovery to be installed):
A. Download the latest Superuser package from here: http://downloads.noshufou.netdna-cdn.com/superuser/Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip
B. Place the .zip package on your SD card anywhere. Just make sure to remember where you store it.
C. Turn off your phone and boot into recovery. This is done by holding down Volume Up + Volume Down + Power while the phone is turned off.
D. You will now be in ClockworkMod Recovery. Use the Volume Up and Volume Down keys to navigate and the power key as a return/enter key.
E. Select the "Install zip from sdcard". Then select "choose zip from external sdcard" or "choose zip from internal sdcard" depending on where you placed the .zip package.
F. Browse to the location of the .zip package and select it. Browse down the confirmation list to "Yes - Install blah blah" and press enter. It will now install Superuser.
G. You will now be returned to the "install zip from sdcard" menu. Press back to go back to the main menu and select "reboot system now". Your device will boot up normally.
H. Browse through the app drawer, you should see the Superuser app. Congratulations! You have successfully rooted your device.

As the title states, I used the htcdev unlock method for hboot 2.18 android 2.3.5 and was not able to get s-off through cmd. I thought I read somewhere that I could still flash a rom in the stock recovery (which I tried) and after wiping everything and flashing rom, the phone is stuck in boot loop. These phones seem to have changed a lot since I had mine back in the day (this one belongs to my girlfriend and she needs it now that her s3 was stolen) and I am unfamiliar with the modern methods.
Any help would be appreciated.

You will not achieve S-OFF for HBOOT 2.18 unless you follow the method described by Captian_Throwback at http://themikmik.com/showthread.php...18-HBOOT-with-HTCDev-com-No-More-Watermark!-)
Power off the EVO 4G then simultaneously press and hold down the volume down and power buttons until the bootloader starts. If the top line of the bootloader says UNLOCKED, you will be able to flash the ROM. If you followed the directions on page 1 of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1473373, you installed ClockWorkMod Recovery. I recommend that you replace ClockworkMod Recovery with SmelkusMOD which has a reputation for wiping memory more reliably which is crucial to flashing ROMs successfully. You can download a SmelkusMOD Recovery image from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661543 and follow these directions to flash the boot image:
1) Copy the image file you have downloaded to the adb folder on your computer.
2) Rename the image file you have downloaded to recovery.img.
3) Enter fastboot on your phone.
4) Open a command prompt in the adb folder on your computer.
5) Enter the following at the adb command prompt on your computer.
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
6) Wait for the image flash to be completed before selecting Recovery on your phone and pressing the power button.
Be sure you download the recovery file with the .img extension rather than trying to install the zip file. This will install SmelkusMOD Recovery 4.3 on your phone and allow you to reflash your phone's ROM.
After installing SmelkusMOD Recovery 4.3 follow these steps to flash the ROM
1) Select Recovery and press the power button.
2) Select Wipe and press the power button.
3) Select Superwipe, press the power button, and press power again to confirm.
4) Select Other Wipes, press the power button, and press power again to confirm.
5) Repeat step 4.
6) Select /sd-ext, press the power button, and press power again to confirm.
7) Select .android_secure, press the power button, and press power again to confirm.
8) Repeat steps 6 and 7 two more times.
9) Select Return and press the power button.
10) Select Flash zip menu and press the power button.
11) Select Choose zip from sdcard and press the power button.
12) Select the zip file containing the ROM you are flashing and press the power button.
13) Wait for the flash to complete.
14) Select Return and press the power button.
15) Select Reboot system now and press the power button.
I did not install a custom recovery. I am running the recovery that I believe is installed after htcdev unlock. I got to step 33 of this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771755 and could not get my computer to communicate any further after that (but the phone was working fine). Is there a way to undo what I have done and start from the beginning again? Is there a pc36img file that I can flash in the recovery I have now that will stop the boot loop? Should I try another rom?

If you were able to complete step 24 successfully, you should have installed Amon-RA Recovery which is similar to SmelkusMOD Recovery. If so, your phone's display should be similar to the screenshot for step 27 when you select Recovery from the bootloader menu and press the power button. At this point, I recommend flashing a rooted ROM. Do you have a particular ROM in mind, or do you want to flash the rooted version of the latest Sprint ROM available at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671395? To do this connect the EVO to your computer using the USB cable, select USB-MS toggle and press the power button, and copy the zip file containing the ROM you want to flash from your computer to your EVO's sdcard. When the file has finished copying to the sdcard, press the power button to disconnect the USB-MS toggle then wipe the phone and flash the new ROM.

I flashed that and now I'm out of boot loop! Why does this rom work and not others? I flashed a jb rom first, which is what got it stuck in the first place.

I'm not sure which JellyBean ROM you were trying to flash. You need to read the developer's directions for flashing carefully. Some JellyBean ROMs require an extended partition on the sdcard and will not install if the sd-ext partition is not detected. You can read an explanation of sdcard partitioning at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158993. If you opt to partition your sdcard, do not forget to copy the entire contents of the sdcard to an empty folder on your computer first since partitioning will destroy all data on the sdcard! I recommend either a 512 MB extended partition (sd-ext) for 8GB sdcard or 1024 MB extended partition for 32 GB sdcard and formatting the sd-ext partition with the ext3 file system as this configuration will work with Gingerbread as well as ICS and JellyBean ROMs. Once you have partitioned and formatted the sdcard, copy the original contents of the sdcard from your computer to the newly formatted sdcard.

The sd-ext partition is used to free up internal memory and to allow apps to be installed to the partition.
Hey guys im trying to root my device so i can install some lightweight custom roms. Ive been following this guide i found online

I basically did this
Installing Clockwork Recovery Mod
Find the recovery image file which is clockworkmod.tar
On your Samsung Galaxy S3 I747, press and hold down the volume down, power, and home buttons
Once your at the warning screen, press volume up to accept
Launch the Odin program from your computer
In Odin, find the PDA tab and click it
Find the clockworkmod.tar.md5 file in the unzipped recovery image file
Press start to begin flashing the recovery mod
BE PATIENT! and wait until your device reboots
Once your device has fully rebooted, you can start installing root
It loaded on the phone fine. I then did this
Installing Root
Transfer the root.zip file onto your phone from your computer
Make sure you connect your s3 to your computer and find the root zip file and put it in your downloads folder.
Enter clockwork recover mod by holding down the volume up, power, and home buttons
Navigate by using the volume buttons to Install Zip > Choose Zip from Internal SD card > Navigate to the downloads folder> Select
Be Patient! and wait until your device is finished
Once the process is finished, you can select Reboot
Once your device has rebooted, launch the Google Play Store app
Search “SuperuserSU” and select the first app that shows in the search results
Install this app
Once it has finished installing, your done!
The only problem is I cant navigate to the option "install zip from internal sd card" I simply dont have though's options here is what I have when hold volume up reset and home
"reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage (which i dont have)
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
When i hit apply update from ADB it says "now send the package you want to apply to the device with "adb sideload <filename>"...
Im wondering if the original flash didnt go thru? Why dont I have the options that I should?
Any help would mean the world trying to get this puppy up asap!

It loaded on the phone fine. I then did this
Installing Root
Transfer the root.zip file onto your phone from your computer
Make sure you connect your s3 to your computer and find the root zip file and put it in your downloads folder.
Enter clockwork recover mod by holding down the volume up, power, and home buttons
Navigate by using the volume buttons to Install Zip > Choose Zip from Internal SD card > Navigate to the downloads folder> Select
Be Patient! and wait until your device is finished
Once the process is finished, you can select Reboot
Once your device has rebooted, launch the Google Play Store app
Search “SuperuserSU” and select the first app that shows in the search results
Install this app
Once it has finished installing, your done!
The only problem is I cant navigate to the option "install zip from internal sd card" I simply dont have though's options here is what I have when hold volume up reset and home
"reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage (which i dont have)
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache

Sounds like the root method you are using is just way to complicated. Follow this one here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426 it has prerooted firmwares that you just install with odin and you are done (cwm included). Just make sure you grab the right firmware for your carrier.

Beauty I think its flashing the rogers rom to my phone from there Im good to load other roms using this odin tool? (or is it rom manager?)
also what is this clockwork mod ? I might as well go into play store and get both rom manager and clockwork?

So After I flashed the new rom to my phone i left it plugged in and it restarted. Android loader popped on and now it says android is upgrading... starting apps. Its been like this for over a half an hour... what do i do??? helpppp dont really want to reset it but it is bricked? or do i have to reload ?
update:
held the restart button down it restarted bit is still stuck on starting apps.
update two:
held vol down home and reset tried to reload the rogers rom onto the phone and now it stops at samsung load screen. Do i have to reload the carrier that came with the phone? I cant quite remember what the original carrier was.
UPDATE THREE:
I as able to boot back into the phone but...nothing changed? i ended up wiping the phones data in settings because its too full as it is. I downloaded root checker and it said access was denied ? That makes its not rooted after all... I followed the directions seems that they didnt take? Any clues?

Okay buddy looks like you need to learn some basic android 101
You are definitely not ready to root or do anything til you learn this stuff...
Okay, so first is recoveries. Basically recoveries are a bit of software that let's you flash ROMs, kernels, and whatever else to your phone. When you hold volume up and power when your phone is off, you boot to recovery. Now basically recoveries are necessary because when you are flashing a new ROM it essentially deletes the android system from your phone first so this is a way of your phone still working between flashes.
Clockworkmod is a custom recovery with a lot of features meant for flashing ROMs. There are competitors such as TWRP (team win recovery project) but clockworkmod is a great starter. Use videos or tutorials on how to use it before you flash your first ROM. I can not stress how often you need to read read and read some more.
Okay so rooting your phone. Basically there is a "root" directory of your phone. Its where all the system files are stored and it let's you do a lot of stuff, but it also means you can screw a lot of stuff up to (like really screw it up). On default you are locked out of here by the maker of your phone for various reasons. Rooting means that someone found an exploit to gain access to this folder. Usually what you then do is you find a way to inject superuser (a little app that gives root access to other apps later on). You use Odin in this case to install a stock Samsung rom (with superuser already put in the root directory of that modified ROM its installing) essentially this means you have root. Root allows you to install recoveries like clockworkmod (which you need to flash ROMs later.
Okay so that was my quick run through. At your point you need to go to YouTube and Google how to root the sgs3 and hopefully they should have one for your specific carrier. The process should be the same minus the files you flash. Essentially you should be looking for stock ROM (for your specific device) with superuser or supersu already installed. Then you should be finding a way to install clockworkmod once you have root. (You may be able to find a file or tutorial that does this in one go). I cannot emphasise enough about reading. You wouldn't be here had you read first and in the flashing business, if you don't want a sgs3 paper weight you should read first.
Oh and ROMmanager from the marketplace installs clockworkmod for you (ONCE YOU HAVE ROOT) its simple. Just download it from the play story. Click flash recovery. It will load a bit and your done. Then you can reboot into it. ROM manager (the paid version is unnecessary) it just adds extra features you don't yet need. Look at it once you have flashed your first few ROMs.

Hi eddy,
It sounds like you didn't get CWM to stick after your flash with ODIN. You need to uncheck the reboot option in odin and then after the flash is done pull the battery and go directly into CWM loader by booting with the volume up + power + home button method. This will give you cwm rather than the stock loader you seem to be trying to use. You're almost there!

He also said root wasn't sticking. He needs that before he can cwm to stick

I think he can't install the superuser.zip from cwm after boot because he's allowing the stock rom to overwrite his cwm flash ... he's gotta pull his battery after the odin flash to get root in. That's what worked for me. once he's got root he can use rom manager to upgrade to cwm 6.x

He shouldn't need cwm to install. If flashes a firmware with root already injected he can then just use rom manager to install clockworkmod for the first time since rom manager just needs root which he will have. You can root and keep the stock recovery on at the same time
I think his biggest issue is root not sticking. Til he does that cwm wont install
