Android Market and kids phones - Desire General

Kids now have Motorola Defys .....
My question is this - has anyone come across a clever way of limiting how much they spend in the market ?
Ideally id love to 'load credit' into their accounts but it doesnt seem like this is possible.
Looks like my only option is to add my credit card details into their account - now they are pretty trustworthy kids but still .....
Has anyone found a clever way round this ?

americans can use paypal on there market, putting a certain amount in a paypal account would be a perfect way to do this, as it stands on the uk market there is no way to do this, as the only way we can pay is with a card and google checkout.

Cheers ... not sure they will manage to wait until Paypal finally makes it to the UK for Google Checkout as they are already asking for the full versions on RoboDefense etc

do your kids use gmail? if not, you could make a google id, that they could share, then any apps bought, they could both use, rather than paying for two

Can you get a debit card for your children? I don't know about UK, but here in Latvia, children from age 8 can get a debit card.
If you manage to get debit cards for your children, you can just load any amount of money on it.
If you can't get a seperate debit card for your children, you can just get a second one for yourself (setting spending limits on it) and give it to your children.

Only Credit card for payment

Rubbish!
only option is to pay for apps with a credit card !!!
That's poor!
credit cards are an evil and one im happy not to have, but i'd also like to buy apps, i have a visa debit or a paypal account, surely they could accept either of these!?
after all, they're stopping me giving them money!! surely people want money, it's the whole point of a paid app !?
Check out the pre-pay mastercard from FairFX.
Top up with whatever you like and theres no credit check, credit limit etc. Worth a look.
Good News, you are wrong.
Sign up to GoogleCheckout and there you can add a Visa Debit (HSBC for me) and then when you go to buy stuff from Market it uses Google Checkout automatically rather than putting in your CC details.

Thanks for the replies, chaps.
Awesome news!
Getting frustrated with marketplace now.
Trying to purchase scoccer centre, like the sky sports one but will not take my CC, keeps saying there are errors. I have tried 2 cards, and my original google checkout accout but to no avail.
Any ideas?

I have the same problem ?????
Google Checkout all set up....much better!
Thanks for the tip
DONT use credit/debit card when buying stuff directly on your phone.
Setup Googlecheckout. It takes no time at all, and when you buy other stuff you dont need to keep putting your data in.
Got there in the end, I have too many google accounts etc.
The google checkout account was different to the googlemail account, so went into googlemail account and added checkout to that!!
Well the app is still "authorising" but I have had the confirmation email.
Sorry, first time android and marketplace user
This phone is replacing my ipod touch and HTC Touch Diamond (with tomtom 7 legit)

Doesn't matter how careful you are, if you lose it, it's still lost.
Until someone finds it and maxes out your creditcard.
I'd be keen on doing that with my NFC cashcard though, would be good to swipe my phone at stores to pay for stuff.

I had one of these for my HD2 for years (well, one year..) and I loved it! To answer the question, it did make me feel everything was safer because I'm always aware of where my phone is. I'm tempted to get one for my sgs.

Nice range of colours for a case and every man to his own but ...Credit cards together with your phone...really? By next year, I predict there will be a side pouch on tablets for a passport, drivers license and credit cards. Imagine forgetting that in the back of a cab!

useful for me as i do not intend to put a credit card in it, but my tap-to-pay flash card when taking public transport
i have the sinking feeling it will not fit the 2000mah battery though
Dang-it someone's nicked my credit cards!!
Better call the company and get them cancelled........

That's specifically what this case was designed for. Octopus/Felica/etc. The "credit card" was someone making stuff up to try to sell it in places where contactless cards are not the norm.

Just to the point like for public transport in Holland and France they use NFC transport payment cards..
Still it does not matter people tend to level the phones, wallets , passport in public places on a daily bases. So stop going on about credit card in this case if you feel to put your credit cards in the so be it...
I have one of these. I use it to keep my business cards in. Also that means if I lose it the person who finds it has my contact details.
people who put credit cards in it though are grade A clowns though.
Could be very useful to put my ID card in that we have to touch against pads to open doors...
On the other hand, I like my phone naked
Thats quite cool, I'm looking for something similar to put my Oyster card in.
oyster card is a rfid card used to get thought barriers on London Underground.
I don't really see a problem with putting a credit card in it,I have more chance of losing the card on its own than loosing the phone with the card in it.
I thought of getting one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/GADGET-SAMS...?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1324822612&sr=1-14 but I hate think having to open it to use the phone would piss me of quickly

i have been searching for something simular while in korea. i found this but it's a bit pricy
http://list.gmarket.com.sg/item/TANGRAM-SMART-CASE-FOR-SAMSUNG/404816819
it has as an extra that u don't have to remove the card in order to take pictures.
On the ebay auction from the OP it says that it might fit the AT&T version. Has anyone tried it on the i777? I'm very curious, this is exactly what I'm looking for. I could completely eliminate my wallet on most days. Its on sale for $2.99 for 2 more days, so I may just try it anyway.
I bought it for $3 to try on my AT&T S2. I'll let you know how it is whenever I get it.

I'd have to agree, going to get one for my oyster transport card as I always have my phone handy so it makes sense.
Also I've never lost or had my phone stolen in 10 years but I've lost credit cards (and wallets) in the past so for me it's probably a safer option!

[Q]NFC App's

Hi there,
Is there any NFC Apps that i can make use of the NFC hardware, i downloaded a few apps from the play store, but it seems like all they do is read the tags. How about replacing my contactless credit card that my phone can read to use my phone as the card?
Any idas guys
Only people I know that are doing it right now are Orange together with Barclays. The One X isn't supported however as you need their special app which isn't loaded on the phone and doesn't appear on the market.
http://shop.orange.co.uk/mobile-phones/contactless/overview
Apart from Orange+Barclays, nobody else seems to be doing it. There are plans for a joint NFC wallet system from Orange + Voda + O2 but nothing has happened yet.

thanks for the info, i thought as much but wasnt sure.

I am using the HTC Amaze, NFC tags from buynfctags.com and the NFC Task Launcher App.
With the NFC Task Launcher App, you can program the tags to do one single task or multiple tasks all on 1 sticker. You might need to get NFC Tags that can store more data (like the NFC tags with the NTAG or 1K chip).*
I've tried creating tags to turn my phone to vibrate and turn off wifi and tags to do the opposite. I even have tags to set my alarms and open up my Facebook App.*

NFC Task Launcher seems a great idea.
But if you use tags in public places (say to automatically connect to a secured customer only network at a coffee shop), I can think of numerous potential security issues.
At the moment the only use for NFC tags for this phone is for your own purposes. So you could stick one near your bed...and in your car and things like that to automate daily tasks.
I am sure in the future you will be able to use it to pay in places like Starbucks or McDonalds, but its not quite there yet.
I think there are also plans to embed NFC tags in posters in train stations etc so you can wave your phone at it, and get some publicity on your phone.
I had some Xperia S tags so I tested the One X with them just to make sure NFC was working.
Here is some more info about reading and writing NFC tags. The purposes are endless. So much cool things you can do!

That's interesting. If it's working so well, I don't understand why they didn't just release it with NFC. Now I've been left with a negative view of the application, as well as many other people (check all the reviews on the Play Store). As it is, the application doesn't realistically provide better options than Pingit. Launching with NFC would've made O2 the first company to officially enable NFC payments on a Android phone in the UK, but now that's not so sure.
Speaking of which, are you using the HTC One X to test it? Or the Galaxy Nexus? Also, I'm curious about if O2 are using the embedded secure element or the UICC. Did you have to get a new SIM card for NFC payments to work?
Just to confirm, have you tried paying for items outside of your office, in McDonald's or Greggs for example?

Actually, the future is almost here. Google Wallet works like a charm outside the office/house
Not only that I paid a McDonalds menu & a pack of cigarettes, but I also did it in Romania, a European underdeveloped country
Head over Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S forums for more "success stories" regarding GW and NFC payments.

Yes, we're aware of that - I've used Google Wallet many times myself. There's no equivalent service in the UK; we were talking about the O2 Wallet.
My bad. I was reading in diagonal
Lol you like glasses? right to read ><'
Some cool ideas:
1) Put a tag in the car mount, match with Tasker to enable Bluetooth for handsfree and disable WiFi without draining battery via location sensing...
Profit!
2) Sew a tag in your jacket pocket. When no tag has been in contact for 10mins consider it stolen and enable Prey
More ideas?
Wallet
Google Wallet is great and with a rooted phone you can definitely use it on almost any device. I have the CDMA (Verizon) Galaxy Nexus and it works just fine. Anywhere they have the quickpass mastercard scanner thing. You see it as a little pad on top of the credit card reader. Anywhere you can scan you credit card without swiping you can use wallet.
You get $10 free from google for using it, the only problem is unless you have a certain mastercard, you have to load up money to a google gift card from another source ahead of time to use wallet.
It's not that big a deal since you can do it from your phone. It has a pin for protection to keep you secure, in case someone scummy enough to steal a phone has the mental capacity to know what google wallet is.
Has anyone used it with the screen off or while the app is closed? I have only used a few times and both times I'd already typed my pin. If you do it with the phone screen on but haven't opened wallet, it asks for pin right?
It's scary the first time you use it, I almost didn't believe it would work, but it DID!

Tons of write protected cards

I want to russia for a two week vacation last month... and i discovered something ultra cool about their train cards...
So now i have this huge pack of russian metro passes and they all have nfc chips in them...
unfortunately, these passes are all write protected...
is there any way to completely wipe these cards and get write permissions....
LOL! How did you get all those cards?
did you really ride the train THAT much? or did you just collect discarded ones along the way?

I don't think there's anyway.
Anyway, what kind of cards are these?
Beamed from my Maguro.
most of the time, you don't hafta rewrite them to be useful...depending on what you use them for.
if you want to use them to share specific info, you might be out of luck.
If you want to use them to initiate things (like with tasker), you can simply have it trigger when it reads those specific cards, no writing required!

yeah, thats what happens but it still isn't what i want as i want to program the card on one device and be able to use it on another device as well... instead of having every device memorize the tag id... i want them to recognize the code...
unfortunately, I don't think you can unlock tags once they have been locked.
I don't think there is a way either
