Can't flash other ROM's after CWM issue - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was affected by CWM when I upgraded to 3.0. I can't flash any ROM's except for Fresh's. I've tried going through Rom Manager, manually downloading ROM, AR recovery. The ROM install will complete but when I reboot I'm still in Fresh's. I don't know what it did to my phone. I've even deleted the rom.zip and downloaded it again thinking it was a bad download. From here on out I'm permanently switching to AR so if you guys can let me know what I should do.
By the way I list my backups. I did have a backup of UD but it won't restore in CWM. Will it work if I copy the backup from CWM and move it to the Amon Ra folder? I don't want to try it and possible make things worse.

Yes I need help on this, too. I wanted to go to Myn's rom and can not at all. And I believe I read backups are not interchangeable between CW and RA.

You need to restore amon_ra 1.8 as your recovery and then reflash your rom. Cwm backups are not compatible with ra.

I tried that. I re-downloaded the ROM's, placed on the root, flashed in Amon Ra and it completes but doesn't boot up. Out hangs at the white htc evo splash screen. The CWM broke my phone.
I'm trying to avoid flashing the stock RUU and rooting again. I'm guessing there may be a file thats conflicting. By the way I deleted ROM manager permanently.

you can do this using cwm(rom manager) , if its greyed out then dl the latest amon_ra1.8 and put on the root of your sd card, then try again thru cwm. thats what worked for me.
But yea the latest cwm update isnt something to get excited about. doesnt play nice on some evo's.
stick with good ole faithful Amon_Ra and start flashing from recovery, not from some app. its always stable and not to mention wipes correctly/easily

Any tips? I need to get my AOSP rom and Sense ROM loaded.

So how do you delete CW and get RA?

Switch from within ROM manager. At the bottom it says flash alternate... Click on that and flash.

Thanks!
Only thing I'm worried about, won't I lose my nandroid backups? What if something goes wrong in this flash?

Backup again.

What is with ppl saying clockwork recovery doesn't work right?

I have been reading people saying that clockwork recovery doesn't wipe cache right and some other stuff. I am also starting to see ROM developers even mention this in their posted ROM's.
I have always used clockwork recovery with no problems. Has anyone even bothered to talk to koush about this problem the recovery has or just dissin his mod?
He seems to update it often and I find it hard to believe he hasn't or wouldn't address this.
Anyone?
I am right there with ya? I have used it and not had issues... Maybe its because I don't get crazy on flipping roms that often?
Version 2.5 fixed all past issues with clockwork mod.
Well I was using clockwork mod....latest version of course....and it didn't seem to wipe davlink cache...so last night I did the research and figured out a quick way to flash between RA and clockworkmod recoveries. It's actually really easy to flip between the two through adb. I do flip between roms from time to time and its nice to use the recovery the developer reccomends.

Help....my clockwork will not let me install the latest recovery ??? What can I do
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
What do you mean latest recovery? Clockwork is a recovery.

I switched to RA after Clockwork recovery tried to strangle me in my sleep. I reported the bug so hopefully it will be fixed in the next version.
I've hopped between Amon and Clockwork, and I like them both. Amon is a cleaner interface (in my opinion) but Clockwork allows you to flash unsigned .zip's, and makes sure that you want to do an action before you do it (i.e. no, no, no, yes, no interface, lololol).
Both are amazing pieces of software.

I use Clockwork because that's what Rom Manager uses. Haven't had a single problem with it as of yet. Very nice to be able to update CM6 nightlies without touching a computer.
Seems like Amon has more features / cleaner interface though.

ROM Manager also allows easy switching as AmonRA's recovery is there as the "Alternate Recovery" on the bottom of the app. It will gladly flash back and forth (I use RA when I am going to update something through any of the CMUpdater-based update apps (DC and Fresh both use these)).
It's important to remember too, that each of the recovery images handle nandroids differently so if you nandroid in one, you have to use that same one to restore.

not really. if you copy the nandroid file from one folder to the other folder, either one will load it.
From my experience, CWM doesn't flash ROMs as well as AR (Failed flashing the CM6 nightly twice, AR got it the first time) and also doesn't have a Wipe Dalvik option, or an as-easy way to mount the SD card.

I never had a failure of flashing a rom, on any recovery, period. That is strange, sounds more like a problem with the rom.
CWM definitely has wipe dalvik option, it's under advanced. I just used it
Again clockwork has never failed me ever! It seems to clear cache fine to me as I have never had a boot loop I couldn't get out of.
So far there apears to be ZERO evidence of an issue with clockwork recovery so I guess I need to start asking developers why they are dissing clockwork recovery or just PM Koush directly.
If there is an issue I just want it to be addressed because I love the recovery and ROM Manager.

RESOLVED [Q] Cannot get into Recovery using Uncommon Sense 1.1

I downloaded and installed Uncommon Sense 1.1 however I am having a huge issue. I tried restoring one of my previous nandroid backups, but when I tried to get into RECOVERY I couldn't. I keep getting into FASTBOOT or HBOOT. When I try to get into RECOVERY from there it just takes me back to the FASTBOOT screen. I can't access my Nandroids. Please help.
I have S-OFF and HBOOT .77
Thanks JABANMX
[RESOLED] Just reflash Clockwork Recovery in Rom Manager. Yea I know I feel stupid.
Of you have Rom Manager try reflashing Clockwork. You can also restore from ROM Manager.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Thanks but it still doesn't work. I doesn't matter if I try it manually or from ROM manager. When I go to restore my backups or even backup my current rom it looks like it tries to go into Recovery but it just ends up going to the FASTBOOT/BOOTLOADER screen.
Did you try reflashing recovery, not rebooting into it, in ROM Manager?

WOW thanks! Yea that worked. I was sure I had tried that before for some reason. You're a life saver. Idk what I must have done. This is why I'm still a total noob. Thanks again.

Clockwork or Armon?

I'm curious, who uses which and why?
*Amon. Oops
I personally use cw...but many people on this forum swear by amon bc they say it is more reliable... some roms require you to use amon to flash. ...I personally have never had issues flashing with cw...
Bottom line is that we have two good choices if you are a flashaholic

Amon-ra is my preference 0 errors. Clockwork is nice also, has its own app but people have reported a couple of flashing errors. Both are awesome all I can say is try out both see which one you like better.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I was kind of tempted with the features and GUI of Clockwork, but after reading a bit on here, it seems like Amon Ra is the reliable way to go. I'm new to Evo rooting and roms, but when I had my Nexus One, AR was absolutely the way to go. Rock freakin' solid.
Currently if you have a evo with hboot 2.02 or 2.10 the only recovery u can use after rooting is amon ra...just a fyi

Amon by far.
Amon_RA, since CWM doesn't work properly on newer hboots, and because CWM does not properly wipe partitions when you tell it to. Simple as that.

Im currently using CW...This is why I definitely want to use Ra... however when I flash it using rom manager, and then try any functions in Ra recovery is says "no zip files installed ".. any possible solutions??
I use Amon_ra because it backs up the wimax rsa keys. That's the only advantage I saw

The solution is to place your flashable .zip files to the base sdcard directory and not within a subfolder.

Like the person above said, Amon_RA 1.8.0 can only use ZIP files which are on the root of your SD card, not in a sub-folder. Version 2.0 (which Amon_RA has suggested will be coming soon-ish) will have folder navigation.
Amon Ra currently but I have used both. The reasons are clear it backs the RSA keys, and does clear when wiping.
Btw try #grep RSA /sdcard/nandroid/HT065HL*/(name of nandroid file)/wimax.img
You'll see where your RSA keys are stored in your nandroid.
I go back and forth.... I use amon ra for nandroid backups and serious flashes like radio pri nv all that jazz. I like clockwork for ease sometimes. I don't use app2sd. I use titanium to wipe davlik and repeat in either cw or amon ra just to be sure... They both have their good points. and bad

[Q] Hlep can't install rom on htc evo

Hello, just checking to see if anyone can help, everytime I try to install a new rom it says that it installes but then when I reboot it boot loops after the htc evo 4g screen. I have used clockwork recovery and also used ra-supersonic-v2.3. The only thing I can install is my nandroid that I have from a previous rom. The new update wont boot either. If any one can help please let me know.
Try wiping everything and then flash the rom. And dont flash two zips at yhe same time.

ok tried it, still no luck, never gets past htc eco 4g boot screen
try it with both recoveries and if it still doesnt work try older recovieries by going into rom manager going into the very botom and click all clockwordmod recovieries and flash a different one.
I have also used a format all.zip, nothing. everytime i wipe everything multipule times it does the same. Only the nandroid works no other roms will. Please help

well clockwork is your problem. lol. install amon ra v2.3 recovery. once on there wipe everything in the wipe menu except the rotate settings and the sd-card. flash your rom of choice and you should be set.

[Q] backups not working

my backups arent working for rom manager. it says checking md5 sums,
error: unable to flash boot img...
all of them do this, new or old. anyone know whats going on??
Which CWM are you presently using, did you rename the files possibly? Also, you could try installing a new CWM through hboot and see if that works.
I would try reflashing cwm thru hboot. Also if you just recently updated cwm, older cwm backups do not work with the 5.x.x.x version and vice versa. Also i would copy everything from your sdcard to your pc then format the sdcard fat32 with windows, then copy your files back to the sdcard and try again.
i am using 3.0.0.8, never have switched away from it. tried once and it dodnt go to well so back i went.
how do i flash it through hboot?

No you wont loose anything, it will just ensure cwm is all there and installed right.
redid cwm through hboot, same issues. even reflashed the rom, backed it up, cleared in cwm again and tried the fresh nand. error while checking md5 sums. never moved any of them, never renamed. its pointless to even try cause i have to reload the rom everytime my phone turns off or needs reset...
any other ideas?

Greyed out in what rom manager?
If you are using rom manager, go in to its preferences and make sure erase recovery is checked. Although it is not reccomended to flash things thru rm.
You can just flash it thru hboot http://dinc.does-it.net/Recoveries/AmonRA_3.02/
