[Q] phone connected to pc, charge only, still mounts sd?? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi all,
when ever i connect my DHD via usb, it reads charge only, but still mounts my sd. I've connected my friends DHD too and also reads charge only but doesn't mount his sd (i thought it would be an issue since im using mac, but doesn't seem so). However, whilst connected, if i change it to disk drive and then back to charge only, it unmounts my sd from the pc and i can access once more from my phone.
Has anyone had this problem before, or any ideas on how to actually change it to charge only once connected to a pc?
thanks

Never had that sort of problem on the PC, might be a setting that you have to change like USB debugging. Don't see why though, never heard of this problem to be honest. I'd contact the place i got the phone from if you have tried all settings.

I've tried with both usb debugging on and off but still have the same problem. I've tried all that i could think of...just can't figure it out :/

i have the same problem!

got tha same problem, since i got 2 DHDs at the moment ill check that out later.

Actually when you connect your phone to the pc the sd card cannot be mounted on the phone even if you choose charge only ... i saw some app on the market the other day which allows your sd card to be mounted both on the pc and the phone .... cant quite remember the name .. I am sure it will come up if you do a google

i thought that if you connect the phone to pc and is set on charge only, one could use the sd from the phone(ex. one can view pics taken from camera or use an app that is saved on the sd)...I'm pretty sure that that is the case when my friend connects his DHD to a pc...but ill take a look and check if there is an app like the one mentioned above, thanks

Simple fact the SD card should not mount straight away that is why you get the option if you do not choose one it goes to charge only as default if your SD card is mounting without request there possible hardware fault and you are right with if your phone plugged in and set as charge only you can use as normal with full access to your pics and apps saved on SD anyone tells you different they are wrong
From England with leedroid dhd techo!

the prob is that its mounting without request and even though its set at charge only as default, it still mounts :/

SD Card keeps becoming unavailable

Has anyone else come across the problem where the micro SD card seems to just stop being available to the phone? I'd say maybe once or so a day, anything that reads data from the SD card, such as the music app, stop working. If I try and play a song, it just hangs and does nothing.
I tried a search and somebody in the G1 forum had a similar problem but it didn't really contain any conclusions on what it is likely to be.
Anyone else had this issue? What is it most likely to be, the phone or card?
Thanks.
yeah I've had this occasionally with the camerea and seperately the 3d gallery software I installed.. have no idea why
Yea I've had that a couple of times actually. Just have to turn it off and on again and its ok, but its annoying.
Yeah, rebooting does sort it out, but it's starting to happen every day now, sometimes a couple times a day. If it's just a dodgy card or whatever I'd rather get T-Mobile to sort it sooner rather than later.
hmm a dodgy card.. included with the phone, that sucks
Backup your SD Card data and then try formatting it to see if that helps.
Cheers, will give that a go tomorrow. I might ring up T-Mob tomorrow anyway just to make them aware of the issue I'm having.
If I format it, will I be able to copy all the contents back on to it?

Yes, back it up to hard drive on your PC, then after you have formatted your SD card, copy back the contents from the hard drive to your Removable disk (SD card).
I've had this a few times Took the card out, reinserted and restarted the phone. Seemed to fix it, but it is annoying.
Sorry I can't remember when and how I know this.
But backup the card on your PC
Then format it in/with the phone and this should solve the problem I believe
I had killed one of my 16 GB card in Nexus one.
I found a problem that if i use Win 7 or Vista i must remove the device by using safely remove the USB device. Since now am doing this way i never had any problem.
Word of warning you could simply kill a card if you just remove a device.
My first thought was it has something to do with the USB connection. If you safely remove device in Windows - the phone 'prepares' the SD card.
I was having the same issue. I connected to the PC and mounted the SD card. I performed a disk check on the card and it found some errors which it then repaired. I then unmounted the card
I haven't had any issues since.
I formatted my card yesterday and haven't had any problems so far. thanks for the advice.
I ended up replacing the card. All of the previous advice didn't work for me or if it did it didn't last. I reckon there was a bit of a dodgy batch supplied by SanDisk.
~Since replacing I've had absolutely no problems whatsoever, it used to happen at least every 48hours. Very annoying when you try to take a photo and it tells you there's nowhere to save it.
I've been having problems too when taking pictures, which is really annoying!
And i'm not sure whether this is a related problem or not, but it could be...when trying to receive a file over bluetooth it sometimes says it doesn't have permission to receive the file or something along those lines, could this be the SD card playing up?
I'm on T Mobile, would they replace the SD card?
Not sure if it is the same reason, but I had all kinds of problems including the one you've described.
I'm on Orange, they told me that my SD card wasn't covered by Orange Care (the orange phone insurance). I said I didn't have Orange Care anyway and that surely it comes under the 12 months manufacturers warranty. They said pop it into the shop which is a bit of a drive and would cost me more than the value of a new card to get there.
At the time I wasn't certain it was the card as I didn't have a 2nd to try it with. Given my problem was very intermittent I decided the bother of going into the shop - it wasn't worth it for a £5 card. Now that I've bought a new one that works perfectly, I'm going to head into the shop with the old one next time I'm passing. The problem is I don't really need it replacing now! You could always lie and tell them you've tried your friends card at home for a couple of days and it worked perfectly?! No harm in trying.

Mhh - maybe I've had luck, but I use my over 1 year old 8gb cl6 card from magic/mt3g and never use that win function while unpluging anything (not while data transfer). So maybe depends on quality or manufacturer?

2-3 weeks since I've formatted my card and now I'm carefully unpluging my phone only when it's charging it hasn't happened ever since

I hate to say it, but it will happen again. Have card reader or other phone prepared, just in case your sd card stops working totally

[Q] Question - Photos not showing up when connected to PC

My problem might be a little odd, but im not really sure whats going on with it.
Basically when i take a photo, it shows up on my phone in the gallery and file mangers, but when connected to my PC with a USB, the photos dont show up.
I can get the images to appear on Windows after rebooting my phone, but i was wondering if there was another way to solve it.
Any one have any ideas?
Thanks
i have exactly the same problem on my desire gsm with cm7 latest stable. if i take some photos they commonly show up on my sdcard. if i unplug it again to do some new photos, plug it back in and browse the sdcard the new taken pictures wont show up... does anyone have an idea how to solve this?
i think i read a thread on here the other day about this could be that ur sd card is cooked. search the forums its here somewhere sorry cant remember where. maybe try a different card
my card does this but it also isnt recognized in my pc anymore when it always was so im thinking its frazzled,

Dropped my phone :(

ok so i dropped my phone and the screen is completely shattered. it turns on and the 4 buttons on the bottom light up but the screen doesn't. i'm gonna be without a phone for a minute since sprint now wants the $100 deductible upfront versus putting it on your bill and we just don't have the $$ right now. anyways i have a question when i used to hook up my phone to the computer and access the usb it would always have 2 drives: one said SD Card and the other said Phone. some of my stuff for some reason was automatically shows up on the phone drive when its hooked up even though it was stuffed that was always on my sd card. now they don't show up on my sd card so i'm assuming its on the phone drive. is there a way to access this drive again without going through the settings, usb/connect usb way? like i said i can't see anything on my screen...its completely blacked out. thanks in advance
Phone's internal memory is mapped to /sdcard, so click "Phone" to get anything off of there. "Card" is mapped to /sdcard/external_sd (your MicroSD card if inserted). If you're not sure you can always drop into adb and check for the files - this doesn't require the display (assuming you had USB debugging enabled before the drop.)
Hope this helps!

If you were getting Phone/Card then that should mean you were running off of ICS, which also means the USB connection ran in MTP mode instead of USB mass storage. Short of physical damage (beyond the screen) it should recognize and allow you to pull files.
Do you get anything when you plug it in to the USB port?

I have a spare black complete housing. Do you know how to chage it out? I would sell it to you pretty cheap (always willing to help out a fellow XDA member). If not, you could ship it to me, I could put the new housing on it, then send it back to you...

[Q] Why is my new 32gb microSD read-only?

I just purchased a MicroCenter brand 32gb microSD for my S3. I went ahead and did a format using the phone. Afterwards, I removed the card and plugged it directly to my PC and started copying my data from my old 16gb to the new one. After an hour or so it was done so I put it back in my phone. The card mounted fine and all my data was accessible. Didn't think there was a problem until I tried to move my camera media to the new card. My phone tells me that I can't move any files to the card. I then tried to delete something from the card and it wouldn't let me do that either. I even tried changing permissions to random files and guess what, it won't let me. So basically my card is acting like it's read- only even though permissions show otherwise. I thought I did everything by the book so what could have caused this? I don't want to have to back everything off the card and redo the whole process again as I just don't have any more time (hours) to waste on this. Please help!

It is formatted as fat32. I tried exFat also and the phone just kept saying it was safe to remove and never initialized it. I reformatted it back to fat32 and the problem still exists. I put my Samsung 16gb back in and it works perfectly. I did notice that it lets me create new folders on it in ES File Explorer but creating files just doesn't work. Changing permissions doesn't work. I formatted it twice with both Windows and the phone itself and still no difference. Using my USB adapter on the PC it works just like any other flash drive with no problems. This is irritating as hell. I just can't think of any reason for this except maybe the custom kernel I'm using is causing some weirdness. Guess I'll try a different brand and see what happens. Anyone know who manufactures MicroCenter branded microsd cards?
Sprint Galaxy S3
Touchwiz Rooted Stock ROM LJ7
[KERNEL][SPRINT][AOSP/TOUCHWIZ-JELLYBEAN][10/31/2012] KT747-s LJ7 - KTweaker
And yes, Ive tried wiping cache, delvik and fixing permissions.
Check if it have a lock to make it read-only. Big ones have it, or maybe it's defective.

Did you use a full sized SD adapter to plug it into your PC. The adapters have lock switches and I have had issues where when inserting or removing the adapter from the PC the lock switch gets flipped and the card becomes read only. You might want to put it back in the adapter, flip the switch back and forth, make sure it is not on locked, insert it into your PC and let it mount, make sure you can read and write, then unmount and remove. Make sure the switch didn't get moved to the lock position while you were inserting and removing the adapter.
I hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply but it's definitely not that. I just tried it in my old Galaxy S Epic 4G. Don't know why I didn't try that before now but it works flawlessly. Interesting that the original Galaxy has no issue with it. It's running CM9. I even formatted it with the Epic and then tried it again in the S3. Still no go. I forgot to mention that it's a class 10 and it seems there are an awful lot of people having issues with class 10 32gb cards in various devices. I discovered that after Googling my problem. I'm returning it tomorrow but I might try returning my kernel to stock and see if that makes a difference.
...still no go. Conclusion: MicroCenter 32gb class 10 microsd cards are incompatible with the Galaxy S3.

broken screen need to access hd. siii

ok so today some bad news (( i broke my s3 screen but i would really like all my pictures and videos back. it was rooted with cyanmod 10.1 all im asking is there any app or something that would be able to access the storage on my s3 i have alot of important documents and pictures on there of my daughter.. anything would help thank you
Turn it on and plug it into a computer then copy everything out of both external and internal storage. The phone auto mounts to computers.
Also, you could use a hdmi cord with a compatible end to plug the phone into a tv, then while the screen is displaying on the tv do a factory reset
