Is there any way to disable automatic switching between UMTS and HSDPA? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In my apartment my G2 constantly switches back and forth between UMTS (3G) and HSDPA (H). Is there any way to stop this? Both look like they have the same number of bars, but it seems like UMTS is way slower. I also should be in a 4G market, so is there a way to tell if I'm on HSPA+ or not?

I've honestly never even seen the 3g icon on my g2. whenever im in kent, when it drops it drops from h, to E

I don't think the stock G2 ROM has a specific icon for 3G, if that's what your'e on. It shows H for 3G/HSPA/HSPA+.
I think the original poster is on Cyanogen, where it does show the type of connection a bit more accurately.

I'd also be interested in trying to force an HSPA connection. I don't think Bell has UMTS data so if I'm labeled as on 3G I can make calls and texts but have to wait for it to switch to H when I start using data.

It's a feature of cyanogenmod that it switches to 3G when heavy data is not required and switches to H+ when you need a faster data connection
That is of course if your running CM on your phone...

It's not a "feature" of CyanogenMod. This also happens on the stock ROM but we do not see the H icon, only the 3G one. Cyanogen himself explained this a while back.

You mean stock sees only the H icon, not the 3G one XD

Also note that if you're not actively using data, it'll show the 3G symbol (on Cyanogen or Sense ROMs) - as soon as you start a connection, it'll switch to an H. This isn't necessarily because the phone is switching between a 3G and HSPA signal, but rather because 3G is also used to carry voice - so if the phone isn't using HSPA for data, it obviously doesn't need to show it.

Thanks for all of the information, guys!

T-Mobile HSDPA

I just purchased T-Mobile's version of the Touch Pro 2 about a week ago. I moved from AT&T and the TyTN II.
On the TyTN II, whenever I was on HSDPA, the connection icon would display an H. On my Touch Pro 2, I only ever see a "3G" icon. However, my connection settings are set to use HSDPA/HSUPA. I have unlimited web service, for what's it's worth.
Is this normal? Am I in fact getting HSDPA service? If not, is it a registry fix? Is there anyway to check for sure what protocol I'm connected with?
I would like to know that as well, Its normal same thing on my tmo tp2
I see the "H" symbol, but only when actively downloading data. It switches back and forth which I think is a good thing. No problems on this end running the stock T-Mo ROM
yeah I kept getting the 3G icon too, but after i put on tsowen's taskbar, now I get the H & i don't think i've seen the 3G at all.

I have only seen the H icon after installing a custom taskbar as well. I'm not sure if it just replaced the 3G icon right out or if it is correctly displaying it.
My g1 displayed 3g when i had the t-mobile firmware on it. When i put a different one, H or something was displayed. The tp2 i have is the same way. I put a different firmware on it and it went from 3g to H now. I am not using the t-mobile firmware but one of the 6.5 roms. I would bet t-mobile put the 3g icon on purpose.
H and 3G are the same thing on the phone. It just depends on what your ROM is setup to show it as.

they are not the same:
3G = 364 Kbps
HSDPA (3.5G) = 1.5-3 Mbps
i get at least 650kbps with 3G only icon. So i think im on the H

I was referring to the phone just showing 3G or H not the actual speeds.
I'm in the same boat as you guys. When I was on the stock ROM I only saw 3G with 2 bars and this was at my house. Now that I'm on a cooked ROM, I see H all the time with my 2 bars at my house. I only get the H when I'm at home, but when I'm at work I get 3G with full bars. I don't even have the option to use HSDPA checked, I have it unchecked in the options.
I'm sure the H has to do with the cooked ROMs or custom taskbars. Idk!

my wifi, have an E icon, is that correct?

so i enabled wifi, but how do i know i'm really using wifi and not 3g if i see a small E on top of the bars? it seems as if I can not turn off my data connection if i have wifi on..is that correct?

as you may know the "E" is 2g not 3g. When it is 3g it will say "3g" or "H", "H" being faster than "3g".
your wifi goes into "sleep" mode when not being used, helps on battery life, when your phone demands a connection it will take the wifi out of sleep if try to connect and if it does you will see the wifi icon, and if you are not an area that has wifi it will revert back to your data connection.

Not always.
AT&T purposely does not show the H and always shows 3G even if it is a HSDPA connection.
since i flashed w/ a new rom, there's no more 3g icon, but i did figure out how to bring the H back, but for some reason i have no idea why my wifi isn't working. someone told me to disable proxy, but i did that

that is true on a stock ATT ROM, but if you flashed a custom ROM it will display correctly

have you tried going to settings>wifi> click "turn on Wi-FI" select wireless networks and see if you phone detects any networks? If there is a network available then select it and set it up.
did you hard reset after you flashed?

Couple of things..

First, i would like to know if there is a way to keep the phone's data network ALWAYS on H not on 3G and having them switch back and forth it slows down the internet speed. Is there a setting or something i could change.
Second the notification LED. How can i make it so it can blink quicker.. i dont want to stare at my phone for like 5 seconds to see if its blinking or not...
Third the Swype keyboard ?? is it possible to get that keyboard after i put the Cyanmod ?? That keyboard is way better than the original android one.
I have a Rooted ( S- OFF) G2.
Cyan V6.1.0-RC3.
Thanks!

Your phone is only switching back to 3G if it loses the H signal. So that's an issue of your reception, not something your phone can control.
When i had the nexus one. It was always on 3G. Then i Rooted it. Changed radio etc etc.. and now it was 3g and switched to H like my g2 now. Before i hacked the G2 there was no 3g. It was either H or Edge. And everytime it's on 3G now that it's hacked it doesn't use it.. it simply just takes a few seconds then goes to H.
I use anycut from market.
New shortcut
Activity
Testing
Click on new shortcut
Select phone information
From there I scroll down to force the phone use wcdma.
I don't know if that'll work. You don't need root or anything.
I hope this helps
Sorry if it dont .

It was using 3G before, you just didn't know it. T-Mobile decided that they were going to have their G2's display H for HSPA+ as well as 3G to give people the illusion of almost always using pseudo-4G

The thing is that.. when i do a speed test and my phone is in 3g the speed is around 160-250 kbs then while is testing it switches to HSPA and the speed goes to 2-3mbs.. before I hacked it it was on H. And both of the times I tested in the same place. I understand that tmobile would disguise it.. but its odd that the speed test would switch like that, which didn't happen before. Also 3g and Hspa are two different networks :/
But still thanks for the help.

After root - Connecting to 3G instead of H

Any1 else have this same "problem." Doesn't bother me too much, but annoying. Before root, my phone never connected/displayed the 3G connection/logo. It was always either H or E. But now w/ CM6.1 and root, it connects to 3G more often then H or E.
Wondering if this is the case for others?
This was because the stock ROM showed H for 3G as well as hspa+.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 running Cyanogenmod.
There is a long discussion of this in the CM thread, but you are getting the same connection. The stock ROM has no 3G icon, it displays H for both 3G and H. What has always been happening is that the phone stays in 3G and kicks up to H when it is needed, then goes back to 3G to save power. All that is happening now is that you know when it's happening.
Like what the posts above say.
If you want to confirm then type *#*#INFO#*#* into your dialer and go to phone info (top option) and it will tell you your connection type.
Sometimes a particular rom or theme might show the icon on the notification bar wrong, it does not mean that the specific connection type is not working properly though.

[Q] 3g vs. H designator

Im on tmobile usa and the indicator regularly changes back and forth between 3g and H although im in a strong area for hspa+. Anyone having similar issues? Anyway to 'force' H signal?
i agree
i am seeing the same issue
It's not an issue. This is the way it works. When idle the phone is connected to UMTS and displayed as 3G. When it is pulling or pushing data it switches to HSPA ("4G") its displayed as H.
Most carrier builds hide this change and display the icon as "4G" all of the time.
Nothing to be concerned about.
this is normal. any carrier. saves power. only switches to H when you are actively sending/recieving data.
If the 3G to H transition bugs you, I believe the XXKK6 radio maintains the static H when data is not currently in use.

This is not the case.
If H stands for 4G, then why does my GSM Nexus display it all the time?? Basicly, it shows up H most of the time.
If it is using data, then the 3G sympol comes on... Is this perhaps a bug? Using 4.0.2 stock, the radio is XXKK6...

H isn't 4G. this it what mobile connections are (in a nutshell)
GPRS (G)
EDGE (E)
3G (3G)
HSDPA (H) (you can call it 3G+ also)
4G (4G)
3G is normally active in a good reception area, but when you are using your internet it uses HSDPA because it is quicker, but also uses more battery. When your are not using internet (say in idle), the phone uses 3G to save battery.
