[Q] problem with my evo!!!!! - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

my phone went into recovery and my brother not knowing what it was pressed the power button many time. i dont know what he enable or wipe or w/e. now my phone has no zip in the sdcard. and when i reboot it it stays stuck at the "HTC evo 4g" welcome page. what should i do?? i need help plzzzzz

Pull the sd card out and view it on your computer.
If it is indeed empty, repopulate it with a current backup you made.
If you have no backup, you'll have to flash the rom back in through the boot loader by embedding it into the PC36IMG.zip file.

thank you!! imma try that.

i've been out of practice in flashing zips to my phoen what are the step i should take again plzz?

Not sure how it's done, but the contents of the pc36img.zip file is a zip containing several .img files within, one for each partition.. system.img, data.img, etc..

CLOCKWORK RECOVERY AND NAND HARMONY
Tutorial For Using ClockworkMOD Recovery With NAND
After numerous posts pertaining to Clockwork/NAND/Backing Up/Etc. Along with converting to .ZIP from NAND and flashing updates or fixes to both ROM Build styles I thought this may be helpful.
You CAN still have the FULL benefits of ClockworkMod Recovery even with some NAND builds. This is harmony (John Lennon song maybe).
Anyway, if you follow this VERY EASY step by step you will end up with want you are looking for. It may sound like a lot of steps, and some may sound "unneeded"... but I have flash EVER ROM on this board do it the same way and I have NEVER had a flashing issue. So, whatever it maybe... It works.
THIS WORKS WITH MOST NAND ROMS>>>>> WE HAVE SEEN SOME COMPATIBILITY ISSUES WITH ROMS REQUIRING SPECIAL PARTITONS OR SQUASH.
FIRST>>> Download the SD Card Formatter 3.0 From HERE>> http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter_3/eula
Reboot your phone and hold the RED Power button to enter MAGLDR Menu/Select USB Mass... Create a folder on your desktop and drag and drop off your SD Card ONLY the files you want to save (i.e... Pictures, Wallpapers, Music, .APK's, ROMS, Files, Titanium Backup, Etc). DO NOT save any Android folders, System, Etc. Next, Open the SD Card Formatter/Select Format. Now you can drag all you files you saved back to your card. (NOTE: Now would be a good time to Drop the Clockwork zImage and initrd.gz files on the root of the SD Card.)
DO NOT PLUG IN THE USB UNTIL INSTRUCTED!
Download the NAND Version of the ROM you want, the flash.cf file for the proper partition layout, and the "copy_to_sdcard" files for Clockwork. (ZIPPED AT TEH BOTTOM OF THIS)
Unzip your ROM and the file you download from here containing the Flash.cf file and the Clockwork Recovery files. Open both the ROM folder and the Folder from here next to each other/ Drag the flash.cf file from your download folder and replace the flash.cf file in the ROM folder. DO NOT TOUCH ANY OTHER FILES OR FOLDERS.
Now, Reboot your phone and hold the RED Power button to enter the MAGLDR Menu/Select AD SD Boot/ You will now be in Clockwork Recovery.
FOLLOW THIS STEP BY STEP>>> Remember, sometimes short cuts get you lost.
First go into Clockwork, do a Wipe Data/Factory Reset/Wipe Cache(May sound reduntant after the Factory Wipe, but it can't hurt), then Advanced/Wipe Dalvik.
Reboot System/Hold RED Power button to enter MAGLDR Menu/Go to AD Hard Reset, let it finish/then down to Reset. While the phone reboots Hold down RED button to load MAGLDR Menu without invoking a kernel error/Select USB Flasher/ Flash your NAND ROM.
DO NOT FLASH THE CLOCKWORK FILES.. They are not needed because of the modded flash.cf file you put in ROM folder. The told the NAND Flash how to setup the partitions for Clockwork.
Now you have the NAND flashed and you have FULL Clockwork Recovery support.
The FLASH.CF/Clockwork 1.2>>> http://www.megaupload.com/?d=S83CYRAD
I hope this lets EVERYBODY enjoy Clockwork along with the seemigly dominat NAND ROM BUILDS.
THE 123 GUIDE BY POPULAR DEMAND
1: Download the files you need (The link here, SD Formatter, And the NAND ROM you want to use.
2: Backup files you want to save and format the SD card
3: Take the 2 Files for Clockwork out of the folder you downloaded and put them on the ROOT of the SD Card
4: Boot Into MAGLDR Menu and AD Hard Reset
5: Open NAND ROM you are flashing and delete the "flash.nfg file ONLY from the ROM. Put the "flash.nfg" from the downloaded folder in the NAND rom folder.
6: Boot Into MAGLDR Menu and go to USB Flasher, PLUG IN THE USB
7: Double click the Installer.exe/DAF.exe in your NAND ROM and Flash It.
8: When Flashing is done and your phone reboots UNPLUG YOUR USB.
9: LET IT BOOT!!
After wards Hold the RED Power Button when rebooting to enter MAGLDR Menu and select AD SD BOOT
You will be in Clockwork.
___________________________________________________________________
Now that you have the best of both worlds you can update using Clockwork .ZIP.... NO NEED to rename the ROMS to "update.zip".. What I do to keep things simple and organized is... I create a folder on my SD Card named "ROMS". Then I just keep all my ROMS in there.
To flash a update you
1: Boot into Clockwork
2: Wipe Cache Partition/Advanced/Wipe Dalvik
3: Install ZIP from SD Card
4: Choose ZIP from SD Card
5: Go to your ROM folder and select which ROM you want.
DONE.
You have the new ROM and saved all your settings and DATA.

Which file from the download did you put in the NAND ROM ? Which ROM? That is a missing config.txt.. Nothing to do with the flash.cf.
Is there a config.txt file on the NAND build?
I feel like a moron - I follow all the steps detailed above and when I finally hit "Boot AD SD" it briefly blinks to the "boot zImage" screen and then goes back to the menu...it's not going into clockwork.

Just so we are sure... you put the zImage and initrd.gz on the root of your SD card?
I was debating on adding a portion to the beginning with regards to formatting the SD card. It seems I have seen alot of issues coming from that without a format.

Is there a flash.cfg.txt in the ROM? Also, I am in the process of adding the format SD Card into the TUT... It seems in order for this to be successful with people starting from multiple other ROMS, this is a must.
I have used this method COUNTLESS times without one failure. I wouldn't have posted it, had it not been proven with a great success rate.
The only thing I can suggest is to format the SD Card.
It works...

Yes, it has both the flash.cfg.txt and flash.cfg files. I flash my NAND without SDcard in, as I have always. I know, It has worked great for you so you posted it for us all to use. No worry, I will try again... I have noticed that MDJ and CM NAND don't have the confi.txt that you were talking about. Are we supposed to create that file ourself?
Thank for the guide,

I got the exact same error message when I replaced the flash.cfg file with your file. The Rom I used was MDJ_Revolution_HD_v._2.2_NAND. If I put the MDJ's original flash.cfg file back, it flashed the NAND without a problem, but with your flash.cfg file, the ROM won't flash. I do have the flash.cfg.txt file in the ROM folder as well. Tried downloading the CWR.zip file twice, but still the same error. It's not a problem with SD card since the cfg file is on my computer and the rom installer cannot find it.
Added this to the Sticky Roll-Up thread.
Excellent tutorial.
Just been having a play with this and am having trouble with the flash.cfg too. NAND rom I'm using is MDJ 1.6 NAND. Switch the flash.cfg file for the one you've provided and the DAF doesn't work, it won't accept these lines:
boot ya|boot|ro filesize+2M boot.img
system ya filesize+2M system.img.
It doesn't seem to like the creation of separate partitions for boot and system. Take those lines out and just use system ya|boot|ro filesize+5M system.img as per the original flash.cfg and the loader then works. Problem is, the CWM method then doesn't work.
okay the attached file in the first page of this thread has flash.cfg file, but when I download the MDJ 2.0 it doesn't have it, I unzipped the rom...I got three folders: " Meta-INF, system, and boot....I have partition my SD card...I don't know what else should I do?
Here are my steps:
First Added the two files from CLOCK, Flashed the Clock, and now I added the RoM folders, and then hit boot ad nand, and nothing...

Guys, My only guess is it has to have something to do with the SQUASH? Maybe a DEV can step in on that. Both using the same ROM, Both getting the same error??
I think I should mention in the OP about compatibility with SQUASH or any off the NAND ROMS that use Special Partitioning.

You have a .ZIP file. That is made to flash through Clockwork. It is not NAND. YOu can drop that on your SD card (Still Zipped), boot into Clockwork by Holding the RED Power button at boot. Select option 1 in MAGLDR. In Clockwork select Install from ZIP/Choose Zip from SD/Select your ZIP.
It will Flash... Reboot System.

I think I got it...I just changed the Flash.Cfg file...and then flashed the Clock...and then added the two files from the clock folder, the one on the first page of this thing...added the MDJ unzip to the SD, reboot and clicked the first opition, got me into clockworkmod...
install from the zip...now I am installing...and let you know how it work...
btwn, I have partitioned my SD CARD...how that works? I have partition to ext2, would the RoM recognize it? or do I have to do some adjustments?
I think I did it, but again now I am stuck at the bootloader, HTC HD2....lol I can't say what is going on? okay, I'll just remove the battery, and let me see what going to happen? same thing....how long should I wait?

[Q] Help Stuck In Boot Screen Nandroid Doesn't Work

Well I was going to put my first ROM on (cyanogen) and something went wrong. I had done a Nandroid backup and when I try it says Error while flashing boot image. I can't get past the boot screen. In desperation I tried Wipe data/factory reset in Clockworkmod Recovery v2.5.0.1 to no avail. Can anyone help me outta this mess?
Anyone There ??
Can anyone help??
Make sure your battery is charged up enough, too low and nandroid will fail on most recovery versions but the latest amonra.
If that doesn't work look for a .img file to flash back to stock
Swyped from a galaxy far far away......
Where would I look for a .img file? On the SD?
If you can still wipe then you can get to recovery. Us the USB-MS toggle to connect your phone to your computer. Re-download a ROM's zip fie and try again. try something very stable, wipe, then reflash. It should boot fine. Sprintlovers is a good stable rom to work with. Just download, use USB-MS toggle to copy it to the root of your SD card, turn off USB-MS toggle, WIPE ALL! / factory data reset, then flash zip from SD card. Wait for that to finish and it will boot fine.
Here is a link to the sprint lovers download:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PXIYUNSY
and the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830153
If you are using clockwork recovery I think the USB toggle is under partition menu, that or advanced.
Thanks so much. I'll try that, but I'm not sure what you mean by the USB-MS toggle. Would you mind expanding on that a little? I really appreciate it.
I just searched for it. I have a different recovery so the wording is different. Connect your phone to the computer while in recovery. Move down to the Partition menu and enter that. One of the options should be "Mount USB". Click that.
A folder should pop up on your computer showing the contents of your SD card. Copy the .zip file that I gave you the link to above to the SD card. Then disconnect USB.
Wipe or factory reset from the wipe menu. Then flash the .zip from the SD card. Then reboot the phone. It will take a few minutes to load, but should work.
I can't thank you enough! I was scared sh-tless that I'd bricked my phone. Wish I could buy you a drink!!!
Glad to help!
If that works make a nandroid backup immediately so if it happens again you can restore the working sprint lovers.
If you want to try cyanogenmod again re-download (could have corrupted before), and always wipe before you flash the .zip or it will bootloop.
Have fun!
You know what I'd really like to do is restore the Nandroid that I did right before I got into this mess. But I keep getting the " Error while flashing boot image" message. I'm charging another battery to see if that's the cause of the error. What do you think?
I'm not sure. Could be a battery thing. I know it does give an error if the battery is too low, but i don't remember what the message is. I think it won't do anything if it is less than 30%.

I got those errors a couple times when I first started out. I fixed it by flashing the rom I was running when I made the nandroid and then restored my nandroid over that.
Didn't I probably lose that ROM when I did the Factory reset?

No you don't lose your nandroid when you wipe back to factory. Your nandroid might be corrupt. It happens some times. I flash your custom ROM, set everything up the way you want it. Then do a nandroid backup. Copy that over to your PC to save space as it is a large file.

[Q] stuck in bootloader/recovery

help, stuck in bootloader/recovery
« on: Today at 01:48:03 AM » Quote Modify Remove
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
stock 2.2 3.29 rooted w/unrevolked.
any help is appreciated.
So I was looking into roms and I downloaded ROM manager 3.0.1.1. Thats when my trouble started. I did a back up with the rom manager and it wiped my old nandroid back ups and I was stuck in bootloader/recovery and couldn't restore my back up. I do an nandroid back up about once a month and they were all gone. I did back up my sd card in december and I had an old back up on it and I flashed it and it worked.
Tonight I tired to flash an older version of clockwork (like I had before) and I'm stuck at the bootloader/recovery again. I tried to restore an old nandroid and nothing seems to work.
I'm open to suggestions.
Should I try to flash a new rom and start over ?
any way to get my old customized rom back ? (I have the clockwork back ups)
thanks
are you able to boot a rom at all?
I haven't tried a different rom, but I cannot boot my current or older.
It can't load PM36IMG.zip, I tried loading one onto my card but it just aborts the installation. Is there a more current or older one one I need ?
that might be a problem. you sayed you were trying to put a PM36IMG.ZIP on but you need a PC36IMG.ZIP i believe if your on an evo. use amon-ra and and flash a new rom and see if it works. copy and paste this link into your url and it will start a download for amon-ra recovery. hope this works
http://files.androidspin.com/downloads.php?dir=amon_ra/RECOVERY/&file=PC36IMG.zip
also don't try to flash a clockwork nandroid backup with amon-ra or vise versa. it will mess up your phone from what ive heard
I wonder if it does not like your sd. I am thinking try a different sd or see if you can format yours.
I also do not like ROM managers. They always seem to want an upgrade and then when you do the upgrade your old backups may or may not be compatible any more. To get your old file back you would probably have to run an unerase or some type of debug program on the sd card. erased files are not really erased they just have an F5 in front of them to tell the computer that the space is availible. If you have a backup on your compter or old SD I think you should be able to that.
I did check for errors on my SD card, nothing bad there.
I put a PC36IMG.zip on my SD and when I try to install the zip from my sd it says operation aborted.
I think my entire problem is the fact that I have clockworkMod recovery v3.0.0.5. I've read (after) that anything after 2.6 is not going to play nice with my evo.
I tried downloading a stock rooted rom and I cannot flash it. Anytime I boot the phone it stays on the HTC EVO white screen, I can hold down the - and power and I can go into HBOOT/fastboot/bootloader/recovery, then it cannot find the PC36DIAG.zip, and PC36ING, and a few others.
I really appreciate the help, keep it coming
edit: I'll try pulling everything off my card and formatting it...
card is fine.
I loaded a older clockwork recovery then tried to flash a different rom...
it started opening, installing, formatting, deleting, copying, then...
E: can't symlink/system/xbin/su
E:failure at line 76:
synlink/system/bin/su SYSTEM:xbin/su
installation aborted.
and when I restore a previous nand backup it appears to work then when I reboot the screen looks scrambled and freezes.
I'm tired
I'm starting to think a hard reset and starting over might be my only way out.
Your system can not root since it can not find /system/xbin/su su is not in bin
ln -T /system/xbin/su /system/bin/su would probably be the approach if you were running. Not sure if you could edit line 76 to change bin to xbin, copy a proper symbolic link or?
I looked in bin and there were many links to the tool box that appeared to be associated with error logging. With this in mind it seems to me that this link is part of the recovery/installation process.
I would try to correct the permissions.
I was able to do a hard reset and my phone booted up rooted still..so I restored my apps from Titanium Back up.
Right now I can shut my phone off, restart it, no problem. If I go into recovery, problem.
I need to get rid of clockwork asap, I've read about Amon_ra's recovery but I don't think I have enough knowledge yet on how to install. I've tried installing from a zip but I'm just not doing it right. I can go into folders on my phone (root explorer), should I just delete clockwork anywhere I find it ? I just don't want to go blindly deleting files, that would be dumb.
I need recovery back...this is scary
suggestions ?
I have been into Android modding since My G1 from day ONE, I bricked a friends G1 and had to swap internal stuff and fixed it so I have never had a problem I could not solve till now, Like the guy above I cannot boot into my ROM. I have running Myn's Roms since his(their) first release with ZERO problems until RLS5. I started getting random reboots so like any other time when this happened with anyone elses ROM I did the Recovery, Wipe Dalvic Cache, Wipe Cache reboot and that was that, However today my Evo would not stop rebooting every 5-10 minutes so I wiped from scratch even my sd card was wiped, then reflashed Myn's RLS5 got it to boot once and after finishing SETUP it was on for like 2 maybe 3 minutes and again REBOOT!!! this time staying on the white screen, So I pulled the battery and went to recovery and wiped dalvic and cache rebooted and from then on It does not get past the white screen, I can still get into Fastboot and Recovery but it DOES NOT boot into the ROM, I am now Flashing MYN'S Z 2.2 and praying it boots. Do you guys think VIRUSES are now affecting OUR EVO's????
I just need to get rid of clockwork and I'm still stuck on that...

ok, I just want to be clear.
First, I'm sorry if I'm noobish
next, I'm gonna put that PC36IMG on my SD card (just anywhere on the card) then go into the bootloader, choose apply update, then boot into recovery, then done, correct ?
side note, I've read around that it should be put on the root of the card, I don't have a root folder on the card, but there is one in the internal system file (found it in root explorer).
just want to clarify before I loose everything again.
You are correct, and the "root" of the sdcard means to just be on the sdcard, not inside any folders. Also don't extract the zip file.
solved.
you sir, are my hero.
you have solved my problem, I'm speechless and so freakin excited right now.
I sincerely thank you and owe you.

[Q] ROM MANAGER not working for me

so, finally i decided to root and flash CM7
root with unrevoked went smooth and well (love when it says "this was a triumph")...
so i downloaded ROM MANAGER , made the Clockwork stuff and finally gave the instruction to partition the sd card (8gb, dunno the class... is 1 year old sandisk anyway)... the phone just reboot and get stuck with an image of a droid with a triangle and a "!" inside it...
i searched the fora but seems that no one got this problem...
please take in consideration that i am a total n00b, and i would like to do everything without too much effort from my side (please appreciate my honest being) ... i suppose that this partioning is necessary to run cm7 and app2sd...
how can i solve this problem?
reading other threads just gave me an enormous list of programs, linux, ubuntu etc etc and the basic result is me thinking: "wtf"
thank you for any useful answer...
Ciao!
Do full wipe/factory reset & dalvik cache wipe.
Try to repartition SD Card in recovery (choose 512mb+ ext partition and no swap)
Flash ROM from recovery, see what happens.
No need to use ROM Manager.
thx k3lcior
i wiped and ect
how to partition from recovery?
Depends on recovery, if you have some old one it might be not possible.
Just look at the recovery, should be somewhere in "Advanced" if i remember correctly.
ps.
Are you comfortable with linux?
There is very easy guide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVK-tJe8pXE&feature=related
Just instead of making 3 partitions make Fat32 and leave 1GB for ext2/3.
actually is Clockwork recovery v2.5.0.7 and is impossible to find any "partition sd" in the menus ... how can i get and install a different recovery (ie yours seems cool) ?
ps.
totally unfamiliar with linux...

Download to flash through HBOOT. Put it onto your sdcard, rename it to PB99IMG.zip and boot into bootloader. (hold vol - and power)
If somehow it still didnt worked, you can try to Root again with Unrevoked, download this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=661319&stc=1&d=1311251519
Extract it, in Unrevoked choose "Custom Recovery" at the top under "file" and select the .img file you extracted, should be good. ;-)
ok i dl the file, put in sd and renamed it... and boot into bootloader, then pressing recovery its always giving me the old clockwork recovery...
is this related to rom manager always? should i uninstall it?
sorry for being sooo n00bish
When you put it into root of the sdcard (not any folders), renamed to PB99IMG.zip upon entering bootloader (vol- power) it should ask if you want to apply update, hit yes.
so finally i solved...
Updating from recovery was not working (same for bootloader), and i was starting to lose the hope...
so i managed to install CM7, planning to try a Panasonic program to partition drives in windows...
I have found in CM7 again ROM MANAGER, tried again to partition with no chance...
i re tried "Fix Permission" command into it and this time it worked (was not working in stock ROM)
then again partition with no chance...
in recovery mod i tried to install zip from SD (your recovery mod) , with no succes...
suddenly i have found in the menu "toggle permission" command, pressed it and then again "install zip from SD"
here come the mystery:
Phone started to partition the card, but without installing the new recovery... result: it seems that now card has a partition ...
i also installed the zip of gapps and now i can start to enjoy CM7 with all the google stuff etc...
im stille convinced that in the phone there are some gnomes that sometime are lazy and sometime not...
anyway i would like to thank you for your help and patience, hope that this experience might help someone other even if the best suggestion that i can give after all is : pray the gnomes...
Ciao!

[Q] Need HELP

Hi,
I am running Carbon Mod Nightly Rom, I was looking at the Volume Blaster Mod (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2563209) to raise the volume up on the external speaker. I edited the file system/etc/snd_soc_msm/snd_soc_msm_2x. Somehow I screwed the file up after editing. After I edited it and rebooted, it gets stuck at the Carbon Logo and doesn't go any further :crying:. I have a nandroid backup, but I didnt backup until after I edited the file (before reboot). So I'm wondering can I or how do I replace the edited file (snd_soc_msm_2x) with the original file. I have the original file on the SD card in the phone. I went into the TWRP Recovery and into file manager, but I could not locate the location of the edited file from within there (system/etc/snd_soc_msm/snd_soc_msm_2x). Can someone please help me restore this one file so that my phone will boot up or tell me how would be the best way of getting my phone up and working again ASAP. Oh, I have tried exploring the backup created with Nandroid Backup Manager, well I found the file thats corrupted and opened it with File manager, select all- then delete, then pasted the contents from the working file, and then try to save, and I get an error "Operation Failed". So any help would be greatly appreciated.!!
Thanks in Advance
If you cant see files in /system, you just need to mount it first. Otherwise, just dirty flash the same rom.

Dirty Flash? I'm new to all this, so I need some help with the slang. I can explore the contents of the Nandroid backup, are there anyway possible to delete a file in the Nandroid backup and replace it with another file?? If I can do that, then I can replace the corrupted file and then restore from backup. I just dont want to reflash the clean ROM and then have to manually restore all my apps, sms and photos...
If I flash the backup Rom that has the corruted file, and before reboot, can I use the file manager to pull the clean file from the external card and replace the one that corrupted in the root folder. If I can do this, then it should boot normally. Otherwise if I boot with the corrupted file it gets hung after it processes all the apps. (Gets hung on Starting Apps).
I figured it out!!! What I did was I went into recovery, and selected the recovery nandroid backup file that was corrupted. Instead of restoring all the available options, I unchecked System. So it restored everything but the system data. The system data already installed was from the newly installed rom that was working, so by leaving the system unchecked it didnt install the corrupted system from backup! I hope I explained this where you can understand it.
Thanks for all the help DocHoliday77!! I'm just glad that worked and I dont have to manually install everything back over!!
