I am stuck between three phones that I want until I truly upgrade in August. I don't know what I want between the Tilt 2, the Pure or Motorola Backflip. I have done tons of research for all of these phones and I don't know which one I really want. What I should get?(Please don't be bias!)

Oh that's an easy question. You just get the one that has the keyboard that feels the best when you play with it (which you have done, right?). Or, get the one that has the OS that feels the best to you. Or, find one that's both. Or.. ok, maybe it's not such an easy question (hint, hint)
My very biased opinion is that if you want a WinMo phone, you should get the Tilt 2.
If you want an Android keyboard phone...I guess the backflip but I have no knowledge of that phone good or bad.
Actually I take it back, you should get the Tilt 2 regardless (it can even run Android, just for fun)
Are you saying what phone should you get in August?
If so, there will be tons of new phones then, so do not decide now.
If you're going to upgrade all the way in August, you shouldn't really be deciding what phone you want now. By then, AT&T should have more Android phones, their own version of the Palm Pre, and hopefully a new lineup for their Windows Mobile devices, like the HTC Tera (Touch Pro3).
You might even want to wait until October, since that's typically when AT&T gets their new sliding keyboard Windows Mobile device, like the Rhodium, and the Raphael before that, and the Kaiser before that, and the Wizard before that, and so on. By the time you upgrade, it's likely that the whole playing field will have changed significantly, so don't lock yourself into a device just yet when there's still plenty that can change between now and then.
Just get the TP2... a friend of mine went from the iphone to the backflip and can't stand it.. The screens small. That said.. Pure is a good phone BUT no keyboard...
Also.. at the rate the android development is going you'll be able to run android in full by the time you're ready to upgrade *lets hope at least*
Right now theres some things missing but I'm able to run adroid 2.1 pretty smooth on my tilt2.

All that is missing is:

•Sound (in call mic and earpiece work, no ringtones or music)

Which yes those seem fairly important but keep in mind you STILL have the full fledged Winmo able to run as well... so why get the backflip when you can have android running on this phone?

The backflip is literally the worst Android phone made. Just trying searching google or side loading apps on it. You will be unpleasantly surprised.

ok honestly you just made the WORST decision in history! why the heck would you drop the TP2 for the crappiest phone on the planet? slicker and better is more like uglier and horrible, worst perfomance, and of course Android Market is locked down, you cant load any third party apps! and why you didnt get the Aria? its 10000x more better but whatever and moving to a backflip just because you couldnt get speaker support on the Android port is a real unacceptable excuse, its a PORT! TouchPro2 was made for Windows Mobile, dont expect the devs to make everything to work in one shot, it seems like you insulted the port project by moving to an actual android because lack of sound, dont worry youll regret the whole decision!

Odd. The droid is one of the best performing phones on the market, period. The build quality is unusually high for Motorola. I'm sure the Droid X follows suit, the specs are nothing to laugh at.

always liked the nexus one for a native android phone, just not a phone i feel like buying though.
Nice. Motorola's cell phones almost shut their entire mobile division down. The droid was their saving grace, but the backflip and the cliq have been plagued with problems, including a possible lack of upgradability to eclair without rooting. Lack of sound is to be expected in a build that's still in development, I hope you didn't get this pone with the sole intent of installing android.

ive been thinking about switching to an android phone. but not a backflip. its horrible. its slow, ugly, outdated, have you tried using that thing they call a keyboard? my brother has an aria and i love it, but id prefer something like a touch pro 2 with android. i might settle in the future for something like a nexus one with an htc sense rom. a sense rom is whats tempting.

what about the Samsung Epic 4G. It has almost the same form factor as the tp2 but a larger screen.

The Backflip is not that bad depending on what type of user you are. If you active in this forum then most likely it is not the phone for you. My wife got one and she loves it. She is not a power user though. She likes to make phone calls, text messaging, the occasional photo upload, very light web surfing and facebook. She has no interest in side loading apps or any of that other stuff. For her the backflip suites all of her need.
For anyone else here that would like to switch over to a native Android phone I suggest you take a look at the Samsung Captivate. It is a highly anticipated phone and is supposed to be just as powerful as the Droid X. It releases this coming sunday the 18th of July. For those of you who can't live without a keyboard then you maybe out of luck cause the Backflip is the only Android phone on AT&T witih a keyboard.
I myself am a power user who needs the latest and greatest in both hardware and software. I though have grown very tired of Windows Mobile and the daily reboots just to keep it running well enough to use. I am also out of patients waiting for a full working port of Android. The developers here do an awsome job and I am not puttingi them down. I just want to switch to Android and I want to do it yesterday. I to have put my Tilt 2 up on Ebay and will be purchasing the Captivate this coming Sunday.
Samsung Epic 4G/Captivate/Vibrant/Fascinate (all versions of the Samsung Galaxy S) looks like the go-to phone if you're leaving XDAndroid. I'll probably be getting the Vibrant once it's released on T-mo.
Nothing against the Rhodium, but mine's beat up (probably only good for parts) and I don't normally keep a phone as long as I've kept this one. If anyone needs a t-mobile Touch Pro 2 for parts or whatever, PM me after the 15th.

it seems after a year of having the tp2 its just not for me.
in the 1st week i had it, i had to exchange the handset as it was faulty. since then its been repaired a few times and i had enough. so after a complaint or 2 vodafone have offerd to replace it for a new handset and ive gone for the desire.
i have a feeling that i will miss the slide out qwerty keyboad, but only time will tell.
but im glad that i will be having a phone with a faster processor and one that weighs alot less then the tp2.
i wasnt keen on flashing the rom ect, but i loved the phone because every other ****er i know hasnt got one or seen one before lol
ii would just like to thank everyone that has helped me out with my tp2 when i was after apps and tweeks and maybe you can help me once again when i get the new phone
I've been a loyal WM user for a few years, but the days of WM6 are sunsetting. The Desire is a nice phone, I'd be willing to trade up to that, given an opportunity like yours. Android is a sweet OS to have now, with plenty of apps, customization, and nice hardware. And if flashing ROMs is your thing, have no fear. Android/Desire has plenty of custom ROMs. Just root the thing and flash away!
i havnt a clue if your on a contract or not, have insurance ect, had your phone exchanged before or repaired or not? but it maybe worth calling your network operator to see if they can do anything for you.
I was told this is being done as a good will jesture and wont be done again. and if i dont like the desire then they will not be exchanging it.
depending who ya speak to and what the problems are they may offer you something similar.
i was without my tp2 for 4 weeks just for a software downgrade, the deep scratches on the side of the keyboard was not repaired, and the screen was alot less sensative when it was returned.
and because they dont have the TP2 anymore thaty why i got the desire.
I woulda payed a bit more for the desire Z tbh with the keyboard. i have a feeling that i will miss that lol

Unfortunately, I'm on AT&T in the US. They sold their souls to Apple to gain iPhone exclusivity, and therefore only offer budget priced low-spec Android devices. Even the announced Windows Phone 7 devices coming from ATT look pretty disappointing.
I'll motor on with my trusty TP2/Tilt2 for a while longer. And seeing as I'm only one year into my contract, if anything happens to my phone, or I feel like switching (before I'm eligible for an upgrade), I'll likely seek an unlocked Android phone compatible with ATT's network.
Though I would naturally enjoy a faster processor and more memory, it would take a lot for me to abandon the wonderful size and form factor of the Touch Pro 2. Spacious, but not bulky. Best keyboard in the market, tiltscreen, large and responsive screen... Plus, Sense+Cookie makes for a great user experience and very attractive interface.
I understand your position and I think you made a good choice, given the situation. On the other hand, I have had my TP2 for a couple of months now and it is working like a breeze. I wouldn't change it of anything without a physical qwerty keyboard containing dedicated numerical keys.

just bought myself a htc tP2 and the work excellent. i had android in a while, but failed to satisfy my requirements.

I would be hard pressed to get rid of my TP2, I dont care about the bulk. The keyboard, and touch screen response is great, plus in my business, having the confrence speaker setup is the best.
We have 1 other WM6 phone in the houyse, of course hacked, and 2 androids, Rooted, lol. But there screens just dont do it, i like the ability to use a stylis, or a quick touch, the androids just dont have it.
I have had my Rhodium since they were released, never had a single thing go wrong with it (hardware wise) the most Ive done hardware wise is replace the screen protector. I think its a great phone (Although a little underpowered.)
I have my TP2 since it came to the stores... I got it a day or two earlier as one of my friends works in a tel. shop. I still love the phone, the design etc.. The only thing which I don't like is the ROM.. That's why I flashed one of the NRG ROM's on it.
However I think my next phone will be a HTC phone with a full qwerty keyboard and Android on it. Pretty much like the HTC Desire Z.
The TP2 was the best phone I had. In my opionion it's outdated though. I traded my TP2 for a BB Bold 9700 Which I then sold of course, why do I want a blackberry
Then I bought a broken Desire and fixed it
With Swype, I almost don't miss the hardware keys
i started using my desire yesternight, havnt had time to set it up yet. i do miss some of the features that the tp2 has but do like having a faster phone without any flashing, and less bulk in my pockets. i forgot i had a phone in my pocket today tbh. lol

Im guessing that within three months you start flashing again After a while you want the Desire HD sense version. And after that you want Android 3.0

I have been playing with it all day, my HTC Surround is quite a toy. While this is version 1.0 of WP7, its pretty good. There are maybe 125 free apps in the market place and most paid apps are $1-$3 or more. I see a lot of potential. The interface is responsive. It's not perfect but I expect MS will address all of its shortcomings. I lost all of my favorite installed apps I had on my Dash 3G - all the TV and radio apps, my MIRC app, most of the things I really care about, so I am holding onto my Dash for now. But I am SURE most of these apps will be ported over sooner than later. If I get desparate, I'll pay AT&T the $10 they want for their streaming app. Video quality is OK using the Zune software. I used it convert my smaller .mp4's using the Zune converter. I may get sharper pictures if I convert from the original .avi's. There are a few free radio apps that work well. So far I don't see any 3rd party video news apps, maybe Netflix is good, so haven't figured out how to get Sky video news, but again i am sure it will be available soon. There's a glitch in windows live causing some people to get error messages, but MS says they will have that fixed shortly. IExp works great, as does the weather maps and search. My contacts downloaded fine from my sim card and synced fine to my computer. All in all this was a good move....can't wait for the rest to come!

Have you ever played with an HTC Aria and its Sense touch technology? Is the HTC touch interface the same or as stunning on your new phone? I love my Captivate (which askpcguy just helped me unbrick ), but have really always loved Windows' PC OS and the HTC Sense on my Aria just really seemed snappier to me than Samsung's TouchWiz. My fiancee will get my Captivate, but I'm torn between one of the new AT&T 7 phones or a decent touchscreen/real keyboard Android if and when AT&T gets one. I miss my real BB keyboard, but the Torch is too underpowered and the screen is to small for my aging eyes.
Also, I read a few reviews on your excellent phone at PCmag, CNET and Endgadget earlier today, and Endgadget mentioned the fact that the speakers are muffled when closed and you have to really have them open to hear well. That seems logical, but is it as noticeable as they lead one to believe please? Can you hear a call come in well? Endgadget indicates those are the only speakers on the phone, and if muffled, would I still hear my ringtones? For a totally useless question, can you set a whole song as a ringtone, or are you limited to a certain file size like most phones nowadays (my old Krzr, which I used today while Captivate was out of service, can handle a whole song, why not smartphones? One of those things that make me go hmmm?). The same review had issues with the kickstand. What have you noticed please?
I read an interview with HTC's owner and founder in Businessweek this past week, and he is truly a trendsetter. HTC came out of nowhere and are making the best touchscreens I've seen to date (just eclipsed by Samsung and Apple for now in crispness - but that won't be the case for long).

this is one of the reasons I went with the Surround instead of the Samsung (ok the screen is a bit smaller but I like the build and HTC seems to have better continuing device support)
Well back to the HTC hub, it is very sense like but not as we are used to on WM/Android devices, imho there is a bit too much animation but it is very cool and the device seems to handle the graphice very well. the hub mainly consists of the basic clock/weather combo with links to additional HTC free apps that are many of the unique value added apps we all know and love, Flashlight, calc, a very cool picture enhancer and some others that must be installed, the few att bloat ware present can be easily removed (a first i think) it's not the same as we are used to but they did a nice job of adding the HTC feel as a component to the metro interface. these are just my observations/thoughts and your milage may vary.

I hate to break it to you, but HTC cuts a lot of corners. Especially lately. It may be due to demand or whatever, but it's one of the primary reasons I'm looking to buy from another manufacturer this time around. I believe they used to make KIRFs, by the way. Though, I have no source on that.
I really don't like my Surround, but HTC never made KIRFS. HTC made just about everyone else's PDA and WinMo phones back in the day though. Including the XDA (hence the name of this forum, which is based on HTC phones). It wasn't until around 2006/2007 that they started trying to be a brand name in their own right though.

Are you going to give the Focus a try? I played with one at the store today and have to admit, it was pretty nice. Didn't look or feel cheap to me.
No, I own a Galaxy S I9000M that's in for repairs, with that I get the same 4" SAMOLED as the Focus, AND a real OS. Once it comes back, this Windows Phone 7 detour is over. After a day of using it, I'm certain Windows Phone 7 is not for me.
On the other hand, this might just be the perfect OS for my father, who still can't set the clock on his microwave.

Agreed, agreed, agreed! I don't think I'm ever going to buy another HTC device, ever, which is why I never looked very hard at Android. I've been burned by their corner cutting several times too many. I was also burned by that WinMo phone from LG that was supposed to sell with the snap on projector and had "numerous UI enhancements" from LG which actually made the already lousy WinMo 6.5 UI even WORSE. It was a bad phone and I don't think AT&T tried selling it for very long. So I went with the Samsung Focus and so far I'm impressed. The hardware is nice, it works well and the system, while spartan, works well and hasn't slowed or crashed on me. As was also mentioned, I have a TON of stuff I use on a regular basis on the iPhone so I haven't sold it, nor am I 100% committed to the Focus yet....I have 30 days to return it and I may do that. But so far I have no reason to do so PLUS Slingplayer, my favorite app of all, is already available for WP. I waited almost a full year for Slingplayer for the iPhone and the day after I buy a WP phone, there it is. Now that's impressive!
Lots of interesting ideas and advice, and I love gaining the pros and cons of devices, as well as the history (thanks Croak ). You guys certainly know your stuff, but before you give up on HTC, get last week's Bloomberg Businessweek and read the interview with the top man, because if he knew of the problems you speak of it appears he would be highly upset. Some of what Croak indicated are in that same article. He seems to be a perfectionist like Mr. Jobs; but being human, we will never attain such a lofty goal, but sure have fun trying.
FWIW, the Sense UI blows me away, which is why I miss the underpowered Aria.
I loved my HTC Desire Z. It was my 2nd android phone after the HTC Dream and it just felt great to hold and use. Assuming of course that the HTC sense rom was ditched and CM was installed. I loved it.
Two years down the road the hardware keyboard starts to respond poorly to presses. I have to push firmly down some of the keys for them to work. I decide to go ahead and open it up for cleaning in the hopes that it will work better. As a result of my cleaning the keyboard now works even WORSE than before and is practically unusable at the top left corner.
HTC does not have service centers for my phone in Japan where I live so if I want to get it fixed I have to send it to Taiwan with UPS (already done it once for other problem) and the whole process is ridiculously expensive since the phone is no longer in warranty.
I find it kinda depressing that our gear just works for 2 years and has to be thrown away. On the other hand I partially accept responsibility for choosing to buy a handset that is not available in the country where I live.
I don't care that the phone runs an old version of android because I really like the hardware keyboard. So if I'm going to throw this phone away, what should I buy to replace it? i.e. What is the best hardware keyboard android phone out there right now? Please note I'm mainly interested in a great keyboard, not the phone specs.

but hey, i feel for ya, i am a qwerty fanatic myself! i have a dream, a doubleshot, a sidekick 4g, and the vision, all have pretty good keyboards. the best of these four (to me) are the dream and the sk4g
now the doubleshot beats them all in specs but has the worst keyboard (still nice enough though) but if you are interested in new and a good keyboard try out the samsung relay 4g, test one out and the keyboard is pretty good and will beat any of my other four in performance.
I did a gsmarena search of all android physical keyboard phones* with at least as good spec as the Vision. I don't know how useful this'll be to you, in the UK I think the HTC Desire Z was the last keyboard phone sold. Most of the phones in that link are just "normal" phones with hw keyboards but are rebranded with sometimes completely different names, so if I were you I'd also try to match them up with their non-keyboard equivalents and read reviews about them also.
A big thing for me would also be the dev. Community, and also the support of the manufacturer itself; for that reason I'd go with a Samsung or Sony.
*what is the proper name for a phone with a physical keyboard? All the ones I think of are such a mouthful, if there isn't one we need a short, silly, memorable name for hw keyboard phones preferably just for the Vision forums... It would be kinda like an in joke :silly:
Samsung Galaxy Relay
My wife needed a qwerty after coming to Android from Blackberry, so we bought the Samsung Galaxy Relay. It's a great phone, a definite upward move from the G2/DesireZ, but I'm not sure of its availability outside the US.
What have you used to clean it? It sounds like if you either haven't cleaned it through;y enough, or damaged it. Hopefully the first.
Since no-one seems to be able to manufacture a qwerty android phone anymore (due to lack of demand from us? I don't think so) I'm a little surprised that the aftermarket niche hasn't picked up on this and created a small keyboard that is attachable to the backside of any phone.
This would open up huge alternatives regarding screen-size, upgradeability and also more choices when buying operator-locked phones. All phones would be qwerty-capable.
