transparent notification bar? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

is there a transparent notification bar?

Do you see one?
The bonsia rom has a semi transparent one. Froyo window theme has semi one also

If you go to the supernova rom's page he has a dark glass theme with a transparent notification bar. Unfortunately it comes bundled with an unattractve battery indicator that doesn't go away. I tried to flash a different battery but it changed the entire notification bar. So... your on your on with that one unless you don't mind it.

Mystery can you enlighten us? Is there a way to pull just the look of the bar out of any of these? or will it require rebuilt framework?

In order to get the bar transparent your gonna have to either flash one if the suggestions our you gonna have to edit a couple xml files. Its not as sassy as just swapping the pngs

@mystery- yeah I figured it wouldn't be that easy.. know of any good tutorials that might get me started learning how to do that? I mean change the .xmls not the flashing part I've got that down.. lol. I thought I saw one you or thomas posted but I can't find it anymore.
@nova- Its a little plain.. didn't mean to offend. There are sections that make It invisible on my wallpaper. In the end I just prefer a little color.. lol. I kind of feel the same way about the 4g, wifi, and I think silent buttons in the pull down tab. Not a lot of difference between on and off. Besides that I love the v2 theme.

As long as people help themselves more, such as you are doing, then I am more than happy to stick around and point people in the right direction. It would be completely different if you made a thread that said "I want a transparent notification bar. Make me one now." So as long as people start doing things like this more often, I'll be back in no time.

Which .xml have to be edited? Just curious

Ok, here's what I have found with making a transparent noticication bar for the Epic. Making the png semi-transparent will work, but only for the lock screen. Another png or image will hide the transparent bar with a black background. I have tried to find which image does this, but no luck so far.

statusbar_background.9.png is the status bar image.
Here is the one I use. You can get away with just editing this without worrying about draw9patch because it just stretches.

It in the framework-res.apk\res\drawable-hdpi\
The reason you can only see it on the lockscreen or on a live wallpaper is because of the launcher you are using has the background image set for 16bit, showing black under the status bar b/c the image doesn't fit. This shouldn't be the case for new newest LauncherPro as I'm told, the stock TWlauncher, or the 2.2 Launcher (Launcher2). If needed, just pull the TWlauncher from my rom, or you can run a live wallpaper.
Hope this helps.
ecooce, I know its about transparent notification bar, but you don't need to edit an xml to get it, there for I didn't understand.

Follow the instructions in this post. Just pull the correct image from the correct directory instead of the ones mentioned in the linked post. It shows you how to use gimp to make the image transparent.

I made one for stock DK28 if you'd like it.... just PM me, custom battery and all

Ahh gotcha. Didn't quite get your question the first time.
Unfortunately, I can't really help ya. Myself, I'm trying to work through the SDK right now for much the same reason. I'd like to contribute instead of just leeching off everyone.
One thing you might not've thought of that might help...is you could DL Myn's (on your computer)and then just unzip the file and check out what all the XML files/etc look like/say.

try deleting the pngs you want to be clear from the framework, it may complain in the logcat if you don't change the manifest or code calling it but shouldnt hurt anything

Don't waste your time.....it's not in the xmls
It's a png file. It's probably indexed, so you'll have to change it to a RGB first....then just set the transparency.
I think this was it.
framework-res\res\drawable-hdpi-v4\statusbar_background.png
Goodman I am trying that right now. Will post my results. Live this forum n their helping nature.

Sure you're not talking about status_bar_close_on.9.png? That is the pull down notification bar.
Figured out what you're talking about.
You are talking about "status_bar_background.png" not "statusbar_background.png".
status_bar_background.png is the notification background but statusbar_background.png is the status bar itself.
....very subtle difference. lol
I'm wanting to do the same, I actually flashed warms transparent notification bar on netarchys rom and part if it works but it needs tweaked to be right, so ill have to try this .

ok so i changed statusbar_background.png as you suggested. it worked partially. as you can see in pic 1 (lockscreen) the status bar is translucent, but in pic 2 (homescreen) it comes out black. Also, i did replace icons for 3g wifi etc. but as you can see some of them work (silent mode) and some of them are reverted back to the original ones (gps, 3g, signal). i extracted my framework-res and in the folder the icons i changed/replaced are still there, but they just dont show up.
Pic 1
Pic 2
i dont have an answer, but i can help. to make the notification tray translucent, you need to put in a translucent png AND change a line or two in the coding of a .smali file.
i have no idea what to change for the bar, but if anybody is interested in the tray, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7739623&postcount=53
also make sure to get the transperant .png from the op.

thats only for the notification bar background. i have done that already.
i need to find out why some icons aren't workin in my taskbar and why my homescreen taskbar is black n how to make it translucent.
EDIT: figured out the icon problems. there are more icons you need to replace in com.htc.resources besides the ones in framework-res.

[Q] CM7 Status Bar Transparency

Status bar, not notification pull down. I've already gotten the notification working, as it was just a standard png edit.
Anyway, is there anyone that can give an explanation on how I can get my status bar to be transparent? I've already gotten the proper image from system/app/SystemUI.apk. I edited it and saved it properly for transparency. Where I'm getting stuck is the whole draw 9 thing, since the image is a ".9.png" file. I've already opened the png in the draw 9 patch tool in the SDK, but I'm just totally stuck at this point.
I sort of understand the deal with drawing black lines on the right and the bottom for the content areas, then the two dots on the top and left for the stretchable areas. But after I save the file, I'm still seeing the drawn black lines in the image. Am I not doing something right? After I get that sorted, how do I go about resigning the apk to push it to my device?
You'll need to run Eclipse, this tutorial helped me with draw nines. Once you put them thru Eclipse, the lines will disappear. Then you can extract them from the unsigned apk like the video states, use 7zip to put the images back into your framework-res.apk or whatever without having to resign anything.

+1
I'm a rom-whore, and I'm damn proud of it
Edit: Nevermind, I'm editing the right file. I just did a test and made it completely red and it worked. But, for some reason transparency is not working at all, it just keeps appearing solid black.
I believe it's in services.jar if I'm not mistaken. Or so that's what I had heard. I haven't messed with it myself.

Sent you a PM.
The actual image is in SystemUI.apk. But it won't render transparent without an xml our services.jar hack. It's a pain in the ass. Also if you actually make it transparent you are going to have problems with text and image stacking when you pull down down notifications. I just replace the image in SystemUI.apk with a 480x38 top part of my wallpaper.

(req) minimal theme for starburst rom

Hey evryone. Im coming over from evo side and was a big fan of cm7 and the theme chooser. I know we well eventually get cm 7 and its tweak but to be honest im running starburts v1.5 and im pretty much statified with my phone and the tweqks offered in the rom.
So with that said....i was wondering if some one here more talented than i, would be willing to create a minimal theme with a transparent bkg on the statusbar.....maybe even the clock centered ?
Theres a few themes out there but im a big fan of simple grey icons. I believe theres on status bar mod thread that looked pretty promising but its not compatible with starburst rom.
Thanks in advance.

Im interested in having a transparent status bar too man, TIA!
Workin on this now.
most of it lookin good
so far edited the SystemUI.apk and got a nice clear status drop down.
just about to look through and edit framework-res to get the status bar itself clear.
(thats the hope anyway)
You guys want a completely clear status bar? or just a mostly transparent one?
depending on your background the completely clear one can be a bit hard to read at times i think.

on my other phone it just takes 3 images to do this
this one uses a few extras but ....
but i still can't figure it out. i can get everything to go transparent except that damn top bar.
is it possible there is some setting on these that prevents wallpaper from being shown through the bar (ala og droid)?
in theory it should just be the status_bar_background.png's
but maybe the phones not drawing the desktop under this area?

that was where i started and got everything else all pretty first.
at this pointi think i've tried every image file.
im sure it's something stooooopid on my part
on my other phone it just takes 3 images to do this
this one uses a few extras but ....
but i still can't figure it out. i can get everything to go transparent except that damn top bar.
is it possible there is some setting on these that prevents wallpaper from being shown through the bar (ala og droid)?

Hey its in system ui and I think its called statusbar or something like that. If you extract all the pngs you can see it. I don't have have my PC close by or I'd give you the exact file name... sorry ... anyway its a .9 png which requires extra edits in Gimp etc which are a pain in the ***. That's why none of us themers have jacked with it to be honest...
yup statusbar_background.9.png
should do it i would think. but thats me thinking again and it doesnt seem to work.
thought it may have been my .9 pngs but seem to work ok if i toss them on my knockoff tablet.
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Hopefully you guys can find thks mistery png file. Ki wonder if its call out in another apk. Has anyone tried removing tw altogether?

thanks james33440 but that doesn't appear to be it either.
Don't worry guys i won't give up quite yet.
sadly i'm no pro at this but i will figure it out.
stopped and picked up my laptop with the android dev kit on it
and got the rest of the weekend off.
i will find a solution.
mostly likely it's one of three things.
1. the file i want isn't really the one i'm trying to replace. (but works on my tablet)
2. there is another file called somewhere besides sytemui
3. or i'm just an idiot and doing something wrong / missing a step
but i want a semi transparent taskbar and i got some free time. So imma try a couple things right now. and will report back shortly.

[Q] transparent statusbar... any ideas ?

So I've been trying something, but with no success at all... maybe someone who knows his way around xmls better can help me...
I'm using CheckROM RevoHD v4 , and Vert's ICS Domination theme over it. What i would really like is to have a transparent statusbar...
What I tried so far :
- extracted SystemUI.apk and framework-res.apk from CheckROM zip and then
used zdune's patcher to get flashable zips.
This obviously didn't work because the apks currently in my rom are modified by
Vert's theming
- So i used rootBrowser to get those two files from the system folder on my
phone since obviously they are the updated ones, so i tried to patch those two
but to no avail , it didn't work
In both cases when i flash it i completely lose the status bar and the notifications , i.e. no way to open them.
Zdune's patcher may only work with CM7 based roms , I'm not sure if it even works with TW Roms at all.
So if anyone knows what I may be missing , or knows another way I can get it transparent , please tell me. I'm really not quitting until i get it the way i want.
Edit : Opened a thread because no-one replied on my post in Vert's theme thread
Try this, it's a different phone but it's basically the same:

You are not the first one for sure. I been requesting this for awhile. I cant understand why its so easy to do on my old iphone and its so difficult to do on android.

What about semi-transparent? Looks nice on miui and would look nice on GB as well imho.

I want this too. Even just the ability to use a png for the status bar rather than the solid black one which I presume is controlled by an xml.

I tried redirecting the status bar xml inside systemui to point to a png instead of a hex colour and it worked, but constantly force closed on me so I must have missed something.
The man to ask is criskelo as his roms support custom status bars.

You can edit the statusbar.XML to point to a PNG. That's the easy part and offcourse the smali edit to make it transparent.
You can then use adw launcher and remove the wallpaper hack to make the statusbar transparent. But it does not work as expected, atleast for me. There is also the problem of notifications overlapping over the date.
In miui when you drop down the notification bar, the status bar does not stay transparent anymore. It points to another png.

If I change anything I usually delete the public.xml so it re generates, I think I know where I went wrong but I have been too busy to try again, maybe try later when I get a spare hour.

Mod/Theme 4.67 ICS-ish WIP, Early Stages, Help

Hi there, I would like to show you guys some of the work I've been doing in an attempt to make a theme for the 4.67 OTA. I'm currently using Nitrous 1.4.4 but the changes should work on any 4.67 base rom. As the title says I'm still in the very early stages, but I've hit a few roadblocks that I need to figure out before I go any further.
As of right now I have fully themed the status bar, and notification pull down via SystemUI, and 1% step circle battery mod thanks to the UOT Kitchen. I've moved into some of the other apks but I'm not ready to show my work just yet. I should state that my general direction for this project is a ICS-ish theme but I'm not striving to fool anyone here. I really loved the color scheme and the clean lines that ICS introduced and I'd like to bring that to us Sense Users (the rounded bubble style of sense just feels very... dated.)
Ok, here we go. BTW the divider lines are the same light blue color, but for some reason they are washed out on these screenshots, it looks so much better on the phone.

Here's my home screen, you like?
Quick settings tab, so far, so good.
Now, the problems. Most obviously my ongoing notifications all have black text. I was successfully able to change the font color for everything else after decompiling the SystemUI.apk except for ongoing notifications. Is this font color hidden in one of the xmls in the systemUI, or is it located elsewhere? For the notifications and quick settings I was able to change the font colors for all of those with just the colors.xml yet the ongoing notifications remain black and unreadable.
Next issue is the the background image for some of the icons. If found what looked exactly like this in SystemUI, just made it transparent but the icon background remains. Must be located somewhere else, or I just need to look again.
Then there is the tabs at the bottom, for starters the bg image on those is not the final product, I'm still experimenting with that one. However, first I would like to be able to 1: make a text smaller, I'm thinking 2 sizes. 2: Make it not bold.
Thoughts? Suggestions Comments? Questions? All are welcome but please be gentle, I'd love to hear what you guys think.
Would love to get this, hope you get the help you need.

Those icon bg/s are in the systemui.apk called status_bar_icons_tile.png the font style is designated in the status_bar_tracking.xml you can change the txt style if you want the actual font is the designated system font...
This would look good if they made it to 3.0 or 3.5 sense roms

Well seeing as we cant do the m12 containers it cant be done on a 3.0 3.5 rom! Would look awesome though ill give you that!
Oh yeah not really feeling your topbar either so heres a good ics gradient for you...
Thought you might be able to use this to make your own pattern in phtosohop! Enjoy
Looks good. Which sense is this for? 1.0 or 2.1
I'm that stoner works at circle k
Thanks for you help Pneuma1985, I had the correct .png for the background image, I just forgot to replace it in my SystemUI.apk. Also thanks for that image, a little more refined then the simple black and blue diagonal I had before.
I'm glad you guys like what you see, I haven't had any time this past week to make more progress, but I'm hoping to get some done tonight and this weekend. Thanks for the support, I was a little nervous posting this since I haven't done anything before but I feel a little better now.
Anyone have any ideas how to change the font color of ongoing notifications from black to white?
There are a few very good guides on how to invert the drop down. If I find the link I'll post it for you. The theme looks cool so far, I kind of miss my Evo and making themes for it. It was so much easier then on my Evo 3D. Oh I have an ics theme for sense 1.0 around here if you want feel free to take any png's from it and if you have any questions you can pm me and I'll help you out if I know what your trying to do.

Thanks, I'll be in touch then. Is Photoshop a must? Will Gimp work? There's just no way I can afford Photoshop for a hobby. Thanks again.
EDIT: Well on first attempt the layers are not visible in Gimp for Windows, however I have a legacy version of Fireworks that seems to be able to work with those stencils. I guess I'm in luck, because this version of Fireworks is really old, Macromedia Fireworks 3... not CS3, just 3 - Circa 2000. I knew there was a reason I have that still.
Well I can not post you a link here but if you contact me I may be able to help you with photoshop...
