[Req]Windows Phone 7 - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I dont know if this is the appropriate forum but i think it would be cool if we could get windows phone 7 running on our EVOs, the HD2 recently got it and its similar in hardware so i dont see why it wouldnt be possible

+1 That would be sweet!

Well first wrong forum. Second yeah, it would be cool but if you look at the rom for the hd2 there are a lot of tiles still not working. Also the hd2 is GSM and there are GSM wp7 phone out. Without a wp7 phone on cdma it is hard as getting the radios to work is difficult. At least hat was the impression I had.

That don't mean nothing. The acer liquid is only gsm and there is a port of that for the EVO.

+10 on this, I looked at one the other day and those things are pretty sweet. Absolutely love android but this would still be an awesome port.

It should be reworded but it's basically a request.
And being how it's a developmental issue it seems to be the right place for it.

It's still not a release though. As soon as some work is (if ever) started on it, this would be the correct section.

You're in the right forum, don't worry
Does anyone else thing that the WP7 look is incredibly ugly, or is it just me? haha

It would be quite wonderful to port WP7 to a phone like the EVO. But I believe it will be a daunting task as the HD2 has it easy(ish) they have windows mobile already installed on the device. If there is a similar device with the same hardware as the EVO running WP7 then it might be easier.
Drivers are the hardest to get working, the software could problably be made to work relatively easy. But without drivers to communicate with the cpu, storage, display, and etc there would not be much to see at all even if the software was able to run.
Plus and from my understanding that WP7 is pretty locked down at the moment and not all features would be accessible. Though that is a thought without any research into the subject.

I agree 100%. It was designed for tweenagers to be able to do all their social networking. Its kin 2.0 and they are even considering adding a new 'kin' studio. Personally, I don't recommend trying to port it over to an android device as Microsoft might not take too kindly to the licensing issue.

HTC HD7 is a pretty much an HD2 with WP7 if I'm not mistaken...

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818607

The hd2 is pretty much a evo just GSM.

flame and troll and flame and troll and bash someone for bringing up a great idea now back to flame and troll and flame and troll.
To the OP love the idea hope to see it come to light, ill definitely try it if someone can do it.

devs should not waste time with other OS's. reason being is that too much work is needed just to get everything working, and thats the job of the manufacturer. i rather they spend it adding/improving features to the solid foundation we have already, android.
plus android is free, windows is not and nor htc or you paid for windows on the evo so even if they had a fully working port you'd somehow have to get a license from MS and since they only sell oem license to manufacturer dont know how you could even legally get one. just my 2 cents

This would be REALLY sweet, but i dont see it working out until a CDMA WP7 is released, porting from GSM is 1000x harder to get working real well E.X. - Desire HD/Acer liquid ports.
I was in the microsoft store at my mall, they said a sprint CMDA WP7 is due this year. I'd be willing to bet itll be ported within a week after its released.

iPhone on the Evo

I did not know if I should put this in the general section or not. As many of you advance user dislike that section. But anyways... Today I came across this video, That clams that you can now use the iPhone OS on your android phone. I just wanted to know if you guys know anything about this. And do you think it is possible? Another thing? Is there anyone here that is working toward the same goal to have the iPhone OS on the android? Thanks is will really help me out.
P.S>Here is the link to the video:
youtube.com/watch?v=bxnUYtCm-Tw
I think it has been discussed before but I'll interject my opinion. Why in the name of sweet chocolate christ would you want to run the iphone os on here? I had every iphone since gen 1 and got the evo instead of iphone4 and I've never looked back. You know that expression" you don't know what you've got til its gone"? Well this is more like" you don't know what you had until you got something outrageously better"! I know devs like to do things just to prove it can be done. But id really hate to see a talented dev waste their time on this exercise in lew of something more useful like kernel, rom, and app development.

Just watched the video. I guess its worth a shot i'm not sure what kind of risk it posses to your phone or even what it looks like. I would probably classify this under proceed with caution and only if you really know what you are doing.
I don't get it. If you wanted to run the iPhone OS on an EVO why didn't you buy an iPhone?

I am not saying I want to.. I really want to know if it can be done. Also I am interested in a few things the iPhone OS offers, but why in sand hills would I do something as stupid as buy an iPhone. I would never buy an iPhone. I think the phone is a peace of crap. But if I don't pay for the OS then why would I care to try a few things!
Seems strange, they never actually show the iPhone OS running on an Android device so how can you even tell if this is legit?

Android 2.2
Windows 98
Windows XP
Windows 7 (Buggy)
Ubuntu (Linux)

Why W7 when android but rapes all other mobile OS?
People have bothered to run Android on iPhone, so why wouldn't people try to run WP7 on an Android Device?
HTC is releasing 5 phones at moment with WP7, some of them have similar HW to Desire.
People keep asking because there are no good answers to this topic.

i like android but it abso does not 'rapes all other....'. gpu acceleration of the UI, for some utterly retarded reason, is missing and that makes the phone laggy at times when you're multitasking.
modern phones like ours have gpus and the damn UI should have been hardware accelerated as of android 2.1.
our desires as they are now (2.2) with hard accel or the UI would make it iphone/winmo 7 smooth (winmo is smooth - see hte anandtech article on it).
that's what i want for my desire above anything else at the moment - well, that and the ability to do the absolutely 100% legal task of recording my calls.
google are so stupid sometimes. hopefully winmo and a decent webos phone will light a fire under em to get some of the basics right before moving on to something else.

There have been plenty of good answers (which generally are "no, because WP7 is closed source"). The definition of a good answer usually is "the answer is more or less correct" whereas your definition of a good answer appears to be the same as what my kids would define as a good answer in response to "dad can I..." questions - meaning "yes, of course you can."

Just because people don't like the answer that's given doesn't make it a bad answer, or any less correct (assuming it is correct!).
And there is *no* excuse for not using search. From the forum rules:

Sure WP7 is closed source, but closed source has never stopped devs before.
The answer "No" with nothing else following it is generally a really bad answer, for many reasons.
It is possible to port WP7 to desire, the question is rather Who and When then If.
People said that the PS3 NEVER will be hacked, look what happened 4 years later.
Don't be so closed minded.

I don't really understand the pessimism. Many handsets that didn't get officially WinMo 6.5 EVER, got it from ROM chefs here at XDA. Why should it be different this time?
This has been asked and answered quite a few times. Search and Google are your friends.

[Q] HTC HD2 and WP7

The HTC HD2 can now dual boot android and windows phone 7. I know that the hardware of the two phones are near-identical. Would it be possible to port WP7 to the Evo as well? If so, is anyone doing so?
btw: Don't flame, this is a specifically development related question; I only want your input if you have something relevant to say.

ha, you can put meego, ubuntu, winmo 6.5, win7, and android 2.3(?) on it...its ridiculous lol
you are in the wrong section, yes you want a developers input but you are asking a question about a WM phone in an Android rom section......
now think whats going to happen........
Despite his subject line, his question is about the Evo... however, I think the Q&A section would be a better place for this thread.
This has been asked about 5 or so times in this section(dev, but looks like its been moved).. unfortunately .... and has been trolled into oblivion.
please search before littering.. Im not trying to put you down.. but putting WINMO7 on the EVO is like asking to put a lawn mower engine in a Ferrari.. why hinder the performance.
and even mentioning WINMO here is blasphemous .. Just saying..
Sorry to bump an old thread, but with the leaked Sprint 'Gold' (HTC 7 Pro) WP7 ROM on the net and the HD2 working pretty well, are we any closer to a possible EVO WP7?

No...
1) No one has said they are working on it.
2) I'm sure XDA would not allow it on the site due to Microsoft license (before you ask, it isn't license for our phone. Like swype can only be included in roms that it comes stock in)
Well I knew nobody was working on it, I was just curious about the possibility. I figured the licensing would be a touchy issue, but I honestly wasn't sure where exactly XDA stood in that regard considering the HD2 seems to have full support. Just curious, really.

[Q] Windows Phone 7?

I know Android is better (I am running the CM7 nightly), but I thought it might be nice if we could get some sort of actual ROM for the D. Inc. that was WP7.
Not a dev, but I don't think that is possible. You can get home replacements that replicate it, but you're pretty much stuck with android on your incredible. There was a project to port webOS over to the desire, but that had pretty much hit a dead end the last time that I checked.
I would love to see how wp7 works on our device too. Just read hd2 has dual boot android and wp7 roms running. Port maybe? If nothing, to satisfy curiosities and to have another rom to show off?
P. S. My sig is indicative of how I look at roms...
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
I know a poster from another forum who has a HD2 running android. Would be nice if we could run wp7.
I know. I'm kind of a ROM whore too, but I tend to end up with CM7 nightlies simply because it's the fastest unskinned gingerbread build out there for the Inc.

Even though what you are asking my require "development", it is in fact, not development in itself and therefore it belongs in "q and a". I mean think about it, you even put [q] in your thread title.
It is much easier to get android running on a non-Android native phone because Android's code is open sourced whereas WP7 or webOS is not. Thus making it much more difficult if not impossible to port to our devices.
you know what i find funny?? we all say that our phone and XX OS is so much better than all others (Ios, Android, WP7...) but then we go and try to make our Android look like WP7 with home replacements, or ROMs like MIUI for the IPhone crowd...
I had Anroid eclair running on my HTC Touch Pro so I to am guilty of it, I just think it is funny.

#1 This is in the wrong section, and don't try to play dumb about it, you have a Q in your thread title, stating its a question.
To the above quote, they already have android running on the iPhone - http://linuxoniphone.blogspot.com/2010/04/ive-been-working-on-this-quietly-in.html
i was so harsh because the OP didnt even try a search to read the other 20 threads about putting WP7 on our device
I do believe putting windows on a non windows phone is a violation on some law.. yadda yadda
android is open source thats why its so widley available
The HD2 was MEANT for WP7 but Microsoft didnt release in time and The HD2 is windows native so thats why they could port it
Seems like W7 is a few steps behind Android anyways, so....wouldn't touch it, unless it was just from curiosity.
Since the HD2 carries pretty much the same specs as our phone in terms of processor and it can run Android as well as WP7 then what I am trying to ask is what's the limitation on our phone? Besides our radio being CDMA instead of GSM.
Wait til verizon has the htc trophy (wp7. Soon.) Party with colored blocks. Return for android again.Buy a zune. Be thankful.

[Q] Windows Phone 7 Port?

Been a long time android user. Love the customization of the OS, but its always fun to try something new! I know there have been a lot of people asking this on other device threads. Honestly, the E4GT could run WP7 like a champ. Plus, it would be great to have the option and be free to run what you want. Thats what XDA is for isn't it? Anyone give this a shot yet?

Back to the topic. Is there any way to install Windows Phone 7 onto the Epic Touch? I know for a fact that the E4GT can easily run it with the specs it has. Why not try and pull WP7 off of another Samsung WP7 device. Maybe that could be a starting point? I'm not a developer, but theres gotta be more people out there who want this to happen or are at least interested.

Why not try and pull WP7 off of another Samsung WP7 device. Maybe that could be a starting point? I'm not a developer, but theres gotta be more people out there who want this to happen or are at least interested.

Like someone already said.. this would be considered illegal since WP7 is not opensource like Android.. It would also be extremely difficult (don't want to say impossible), considering the source is not available and the drivers most likely being incompatible.
This is the closest you'll get to it:

Ah. Makes sense. It is like Microsoft to screw up something with great potential by locking it down. Oh well... I'll just ask this since theres already a few people in here to seem to know their stuff. What rom would you recommend for the E4GT?

Now that you can go back to full stock, give them all a try. Everything is done exactly the same as on the Epic so it should be easy for you. Which is best is impossible to say. As you probably know from the Epic, some ROMs just work better on one phone than they may on another even though they are the same. That's part of the mystery of these Sammy phones

windows phone 7 sdk has been releasd
I have good news for you guys, i am actually a htc one x owner but this could be ported when its done, so im going to help. Windows phone 7 sdk was released the other day and as far as i know this means development and copy of its software is now legal.

This is the link to the site where the sdk has been released. It allows the creation of apps and games for windows phone but as far as I know it could be the start of something big
Hope this could help a bit

you mean wont be jailed if we install it on our android phones ???
Maybe, it is possible?
Guess it can be done. Not at this moment though. Few years ago when Steve Jobs introduced Intel processors in macs, a new unofficial project was started known as Hackintosh. What it does is it simply asks the user to make a prototype of a certain version of a Mac and then installs Mac OS X using some custom bootloaders. I have done it in my machine.
Well, if we can find a phone exactly same as that of any WP phone, then it MAYBE possible, 'cause that'll (maybe ) discard the need for new drivers. Plus, its the world of piracy   unless, you want to go sell your device or patent it, it should be perfectly alright to pirate WP (On your own risk though, IT'S NOT RECOMMENDED )
*I DO NOT ENCOURAGE PIRACY, ITS JUST AN IDEA, A WAY TO FULFILL YOUR PIPE DREAM*
good luck people. :good: :good:
