[Q] Install 2.2 Voice Recorder app on 2.1? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My wife still has Eclair on the Epic and her phone doesn't have Voice Recorder on it. I'm using 2.2 (Nebula 1.0.6) and my phone has a stock Voice Recorder app.
Is there any way to get my Voice Recorder app onto her phone? Would it even run under 2.1? She'd like to use it to record lectures at school and it's by far the best app I've seen for doing so. I've downloaded a LOT of them and nothing seems to beat this one on simplicity and stability.
P.S. This is not the Voice Recorder app in the Android Market.

Okay try this on the Eclair epic. Get launcherpro(just cause this is how i did it), you dont have to use it just go to whatever launcher it normally uses, hit menu>add>shortcut>activities, then scroll down and look for Sound Recorder. Select that and it'll add a shortcut to the homescreen. When you record, it saves the file to the root of the sd card if I remember right. I think this is what you are looking for. Hope this helps.

Is her phone rooted and clockworked? If so I could whip up a simple .zip to flash through cwm. Since it's a system app, installing through a file manager won't work. If you're familiar with pushing files through adb you could always copy the app from your phone and push it to hers.

I did manage to get the Sound Recorder working, and its interface for recording is exactly what she needs. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any kind of interface for playback, which leaves her at a loss.
Leatherneck, her phone isn't rooted. I'm sort of keeping it as the control in our little home Android experiment. If she *really* feels like she needs this app, I may just bite the bullet and do it, but I'm hoping that I can just convince her to use something else.
I think my best option is going to be to download one of the crappy free sound recorders on the Market and just cross my fingers for Froyo sometime within my lifetime. Thank you both very much for your help.

Yeah, that's the only flaw. I think the files show up in the music player under a playlist called my recordings.

Questions from an iPhone switcher

So far I have been largely impressed by Android OS. I really, really like the level of customization - the importance of which cannot be overstated. I'm not out to start a flamer thread, but there are lots of things that Android, given the proper hardware, does better. However, there are still a couple things that I'm missing before I can declare my Desire fully ready for the stresses of the day.
I'm fairly addicted to podcasts - I listen to then pretty much every day, most of the day while at work. I know there are several apps where I can download podcasts right from the phone as well a few iTunes hop-on software packages. The goal is to get as much like what I can do in iTunes as possible. Say I have an audiobook that gets interrupted or that I want to supplement with some music. Is there a music program that can decipher between normal audio files and ones that are tagged as being audiobooks? Meaning that when you stop it in order to play another audio file, does it pick up where you left off? Also, I have 29 gigs of podcasts that I have not yet listened to. This is where the need for a simple, elegant media program on my desktop comes in. I'd like to be able to individually select which episodes of each podcast I'd like to sync with my Desire or have the option of just syncing everything in that specific podcast that has not yet been listened to. So basically, the same sorting capabilities of iTunes. That's the first thing that is missing.
I know there are hundreds of these task killer programs; some more thorough than others. This is where the iPhone exceeds (now) - but webOS even more so. I've found something that is a push in the right direction; QuickDesk Beta. But I need something like that that can also be brought up in the lock screen. More importantly though, there needs to be some kind of widget that can be placed within QuickDesk that displays all the programs currently open (even if they're in a static state), so you can easily 'x' whichever ones you'd like to close out of. I'm talking actual apps, not background services or mods of that type. WebOS is pretty much the benchmark for mobile task management, so I'd love to come as close to it as possible. This is the second thing that's missing, or maybe that I'm just not aware of yet. Any suggestions / ideas?
I'm running DeFroST 2.0b
One more quick question: I installed DeFroST 2.0b over 2.0a. After I had done this, I reinstalled the baseband version update, cause the echo came back. It's great now, but I'm wondering if there is anything about that procedure that is prone to cause problems. I know you should factory reset / clear cache before a ROM install, but I really didn't want to re-enter all my info / re download all my apps. I understand Google does a backup of your personal information on Froyo, I'm just not sure to what extent. Anyway... just curious.
Thanks to richardtrip and everyone involved in the making of the DeForST ROM - It's great! Definitely a cause worth donating to.
regarding what you said about task killers - there has been hundreds of threads about it already and still people dont understand that YOU SHOULDNT USE a task killer on android system.

well, i need to from time to time. mainly for the browser.
For podcast have a look at Google Listen, might not do all you want but a good place to start.

I'm also a bit of a podcast nut, I've tried most of the podcatching apps and found doggcatcher to be the best. Listen is pretty good for a free one.
By the way is that baseband update a fix for everyone that has the echo problem? That echo is the only reason I am still using Pays Eclair rom...
As for task managers, I think there is a place for them on older devices where ram is limited. You don't need one on the desire though.

I didn't say doggcatcher was free.

You do if you want to kill tasks. Are you saying no apps are badly written? Google for a bit, or read comments for various apps on the market-place.

They reason they don't understand it is that your link doesn't explain it. And the blog from google essentially says the OS just kills it when there is no memory left. If the OS can do it we can do it (and some of them do run in the background)
Thanks for all the suggestions and tips, guys. I guess it's not so much an app killer that i want, but rather, a nice looking way of seeing everything that's open. I dunno, I guess my thinking a little too conventional for the Android world. Google listen can't seem to find anything I'm looking for. And Doubletwist, while a great idea, is honestly the buggiest, slowest, something that should be labeled as being in alpha stages that I've ever seen. It is a step in the right direction though. I'll definitely check out doggcatcher. I'm loving the XDA app, btw!

[Q] Is my media problem typical?

i've been really excited at the idea of ditching my mp3 player and only carrying my phone. usually it will play one song, but then program will lock up after that and eventually require a force close. it seems to happen in different roms as well. BUT it also happens in my sound and display settings when i try to increase or decrease the notification volume in alarm settings or when i try to increase the alarm volume. I'm pretty much afraid of any slider options. I'm sure others have had this problem, i just want to know if there's a quick fix or its just a problem with the o.s.
if it helps i am rooted. i thought it was my processor clock settings being too low, but it happens on performance mode as well. i am using the fascinate music player too, but i don't think it matters. thanks.

I'm having the same problem here using the Music Player that comes with SyndicateROM and WinAmp. I'm using Eclair (SyndicateROM) with the DI18 modem and have never had this problem before. Even if I go into Astro and try to play the file that way, it still will only play one song.
If you need any information just let me know.
I'm on stock just did one click root. Native player worked fine for me... No problems whatsoever, multi tasking was hit or miss but pretty damn good, hard to overdo it and stop the music for me....

Removing Vlingo Voice Talk

Man, this thing is so annoying. I have a habit of double-tapping the home button to get to my desktop and I suppose the new function goes to Voice Talk. I don't want it to go there and I can't remove/remap it. Any clue on how to get rid of it?
yah thats in settings, go to motions in settings and uncheck double tap! that should fix it
You'll have to wait till our phones get rooted to completely remove any stock apps.

That does not fix it for me, I have all motion turned off, and still get the vlingo terms of service when I double tap home. Which I then decline every time. Very Annoying.
Same issue here. I want it to behave like Sense and display all of my homescreens (zoomed out). What does the 'home' key have to do with Voice Talk and Vlingo anyway?!
What would u like to do ???
Lol cant get it off either
Tmo Galaxy S2
Damn near a deal breaker
I like the plain voice commands from android and I'd like to do what I've been doing for the last couple of years - push the headset button, say what I want and have it just happen. I'm going to play with this a while longer but I'm going to give the phone back if it doesn't work exactly like I want. It's too much money to live with like I did the Vibrant - till the guys here made it work.
I don't mind something being no removable if there's an option to use something else. If any of you know how to change the settings so the original vlingo by Samsung isn't the automatic choice, that would be greatly appreciated.
Yep checked off double tap and it still goes into voice talk

UNinstall voice command-voice talk- voice search using titanium backup if rooted. if not rooted- see previous posts.
I prefer the vlingo app from market(which needs voice search app, also available in market).

It's been gone since the first update from when the phone was released... I don't know exactly which update, but I noticed it being gone after an OTA.
One easy way if your running ICS is to install go Launcher, open app drawer, long press voice command icon, un install, Vlingo gone! Un install go Launcher. No rooting required.
HOLY SHII
This solution that GDF01 is talking about, is not only very easy, but also very awesome! I removed Voice talk and Chat and other stuff, and i ICS-froze Readers Hub and all that stuff, so now I have a fully functional and great phone, without rooting or anything! Thanks!!

[Q] Voice recorder app?

This seems like a silly question, but I can't seem to find the voice recorder app on the HTC One. I see it under settings->apps->all, but there doesn't seem to be a way to actually access it. I've tried adding widgets/apps/shortcuts but it's not there.

I was wondering the same thing. Voice Recorder and Stocks can be seen in a custom launcher like Nova or Apex or an app called Control Center in the Play store. However, Stocks app is broken. This is not the case with other providers. Gotta love Verizon! lol

Well Its funny but the same problem happened with me while using my xperia.. and I used to use that application via whats app voice message as if they are not sent , they just got saved in gallery...and after a long time i didnt find it exactly where it is in phone and then I just downloaded a separate app for it.....
I remember this problem when i had my dinc 4G I before s-off the device. I can't remember the EXACT steps to get it to show up, but i got it to show up as a shortcut. I don't have this phone YET, but i will tell you what i can remember.
1) Download ES file explorer.
2) Go into the device system/app folder and locate the HTCsound recorder apk , and try to install it. If you are not rooted it will fail. That is fine.
3) In ES file explorer go to tools - > app manager then system apps and find the htc sound recorder.
4) Long press it until it checks and then go to the menu and choose send to desktop.
This is how i got a SHORTCUT to the app on my non rooted dinc 4G.
I honestly do not know if it will work with this phone but though i throw it out to see if someone can try.
I prefer to use Easy Voice Recorder since it is capable of recording phone calls (incoming and outgoing voice) with no special setup. Not that I really need to record calls, but cool that the feature is there, unlike the built in recorder which pauses the recording when a phone call starts up

Thanks, this was super helpful. A more direct route might be to download QuickShortcutMaker, and then to search for "recorder". That brings up the HTC recorder app, and easily creates a shortcut to the home screen.

Are you rooted?
If so you can use a root file explorer to look for hidden files.
You can also switch to a custom rom and those media files will be very gone after a full wipe and clean install of another ROM.
Don't know if you want to use the rooting options, but they are guarenteed to work.
