[DEV] midNIGHT ROM (Need some advice) - Galaxy Tab Android Development

I currently develop the midNIGHT ROM for the Epic 4g. I just acquired a Sprint Galaxy Tab...Do we have any progress on developing on the Sprint Tab. I know the GSM and CDMA Tab are kinda mixed together. I just need to root and go from there. Any advice?

You can root CDMA Tabs same as you can root other Tabs. There are recovery kernels for VZW from Koush and you could recompile your own Sprint kernel and make one for Sprint too.
I think someone released deodexed ROM for Sprint with little mods a while ago.
There is a lot of modding for GSM Tabs because there is a ton of leaked GSM ROMs while CDMA guys are pretty much stuck with stock one.

Dameon's CWM3 one click works but I don't know anything about kernels and for CWM3 as you know... Needs EXT4. The VZN will not work at all. noobnl has a redirect for CWM2.5 like he did on the epic, but it doesn't work right.
This is what you need if you mess things up. ODIN. DO NOT FLASH THE MODEM!
I use root explore for everything else. Don't be in download mode unless your batt has a good charge, it can go fast and it doesn't charge via USB.

I thought you where out of the game?

I'm a bit nervous doing anything to the tab at this point. I have it as a way for my youngest to communicate so I don't want to kill it. Howver, I have been reading and it seems that I can odin back to stock now (minus the modem). I also have a PM into dameon to get his thoughts on his clockwork port working on the tab.
As far as being out of the game, I'm still hanging on. The ROM is still kickin....I would just love to get an UPDATE.zip for this damn thing. I don't have acces to a linux box so working with the tar is tough....
Basically I can odin the ROM you showed me (without the modem) and gain a deoxed system and root. Correct. That is pretty safe as far as I'm concerned. Am I correct in my understanding?
Thanks again for your help.

[VZW][CDMA] Gingerbread 2.3.4 Deodexed, [Update 7-15-11]!!

Better Than LIfe
Future Echoes
7-15-11
Update #2 fr the day
Ok, stumbled across something today while trying to work some bugs.....
I managed to "inject" a recovery into the rom, and while it actually booted into recovery, and did recovery things, it even went so far as to boot the tab.
But that was it, didnt get a full boot.
So, I stumbled upon a Clockwork Recovery buy doing the right tricks i suppose, however alot needs to be ironed out. and this gets top priority this weekend, why? well ****, think about it, CWM for the CDMA Tabs for Gingerbread, and before Verizon releases GB, so this.......is great news.
Hope to have this done by end of weekend, and in doing so it might iron out the zip flash issue which means I can pump out those 2 roms.
Just wanted to share.
First, I'm removing the download link.
Second, yes I do get your PM's, and yes I do read them, and Yes, I agree....I am bad at getting back to people sometimes. Very busy trying to get GB out for the CDMA Tabs in a working fashion. I am sorry. Those of you who know me, just call, it does hurt my hands to type.
The Update.
I am yanking the download link as it is apparent that the release was/is a failure, how I managed to get it on my tab, no clue, however I cant duplicate it again.
I am working on the build, 1 for Sprint, 1 for VZW. I am trying to get it deodexed 100%, and at the same time get a VZW 3G build working.
However what is very important, that will take less time for me to flash a build to test.....is a recovery. We need a Gingerbread recovery. We do.
So I am doing a few things.....
1. doing my research on compiling a new kernal, and CWM for our tabs
2. asked for an recieved help in a new kernal and recovery
3. changing how i build these roms, no more "kitchens" or stupid "gui" based apps on Linux or Windslows that foul up the permissions, I am going 100% command line for a more effective result, and less need for revisions.
4. Working non stop through the weekend once my wife comes home from work today, so from noon today, to 3am sunday/monday I will be hard at work on all Better Than Life Releases.
I appreciate your patience in this botched release, next time, ill release a test build to a few people for a backup verification it will go without problem.
Until then, i gotta get to work.
Jim
Update..........7-12 6am
I just spent 5 hours trying every trick in the book... from extracting factory.rfs and trying to rebuild it to forcing a fake recovery... I got nothing. The problem is that ALL of the kernels that exist with CWM are ext4 froyo kernels, but the new kernel source for GB doesn't contain ext4 code... therefore, no flashy (unless by a fluke) because on reboot it tries to mount everything as rfs but it's in ext4 after you flash in an ext4 conversion kernel. I would have to design a new GB kernel with CWM and EXT4 modules in the source or revert a froyo kernel to pre-ext4 and put in a new cwm... either would take a couple of days... but I'm swamped right now. The only choice is for you to set it back up on your device like you had it and then pull a roto. Did what I could, sorry.

So, we tried (spacemoose and I) to get the extracted rom from my device to install on several others and ran across the same problems everyone else was having. however, the extracted rom being deodexed and zipalilgned, my device not.
So today I am going to try to get the 3G working, make the mods to the rom, and extract it, then try to inject the deodexed system and framework back in (which is always a ***** on a live device) and ill have no choice for now but to release a Heimdall flashable version of the rom.
I am waiting for that VZW release because with the sprint in my hands, and with a VZW version, all thats lacking is a Sprint tab to start making GB roms for both devices, however today will be a different story.
Oh, I did get TW4.0 to slightly work on the tab, itll either be released later, or maybe in an alpha build. I found it....well interesting. I tried it on the Psirens Rom (I have a TouchWiz4 version of Psirens) but it was way to damn buggy to release.
Ill keep yall posted today. Painpill time
Verizon wants to take their time, fine, screw them.
Gingerbread 2.3.4
Based on the Sprint update
Deodexed
Zipaligned
a little de-bloating
added CDMA/3G Verizon (3G with Verizon right now is a 50/50 shot
Kernal included in flashable zip
Just drop on SD Card, wipe everything
flash
enjoy
I am running this on my daily driver Verizon, to test and work bugs out and get 3G fully working, so expect alot...ALOT of updates and new versions of Gingerbread for Verizon.
This will be a constant updating project. So please expect bugs, and this is a last minute slap together thing tonight.
Enjoy.

Is this any faster/snappier than the stock SprintGB? I just finished getting it working on my vzw tab and it took me a while to get set up. Is it worth switching?
And btw thank you for all the work you do for the CDMA community, we greatly appreciate it!!

indeed I'm lookin for the phone*.apk of VZW GB. is there an update of VZW?
Awesome, am giving this a try now.
Couple of questions:
1. Is this ext4?
2. Can we overclock with this kernel?
Thanks, this is huge for us suffering VZW tab owners!
When trying to install I got an error...something along the lines of, "error at line 11, can't symlink"

My "solution" was to just flash the Sprint rooted rom, which works with the VZW tab (not sure about 3g, though, I just use wifi anyway).
Would love it if we could get an ext4 and overclockable kernel working w/ GB for the VZW folks.
Going to download this today. This is almost more exciting than hcomb . I am glad someone is working on a vzm gbread rom.
Thanks Oldmacnut

Yeah, I'm sure something was just missed when oldmacnut compiled the zip for us. He'll get it worked out soon enough just hold off for now until there is word from him.
Getting the error as well. I am using the Sprint GB ROM in the meantime...
Oldmacnut can you give us more info on your custom ROM? I am assuming you have it rooted but the Sprint ROM is 190M while yours is 360M. Just wondering what kind of bloatware you removed and what if anything has been added to account for almost 2x the file size. Thanks

[Q] [Help] Girlfriend wants root

Hello all... Recently my girlfriend and I had purchased the Epic Touch 4g for her. She absolutely loves the phone but the signal strength isn't the best. I have had a Droid 1 for 2 years now and have flashed roms/kernels on a weekly basis for the past year and a half. Can anyone recommend a good starter Rom/Kernel? Is flashing a rom/kernel for the Epic Touch just as easy as flashing for the Droid? I've done some research and I am a bit overwelmed. It seems like clockworkmod recovery is being ran on the Epic Touch but the process for flashing is different? (maybe not, but like I said, I'm a tad overwelmed ).. Also, are there any tweaks after root that would improve signal strength? If anyone can help me out to get us started I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
-Mike
I recommend starburst rom v1.6.. it comes with LostKernel which is a good kernel to use.. for root though, there are dif. methods, i originally rooted mine with Zedomax Kernel through Odin.. fairly easy .. so get it rooted, and i'd go with starburst v1.6 which when flashing it through CWM once you have root, also flashes the lostkernel
I recommend Starburst. Runs sooo smooth and its the only ROM that I see being actively updated. Viper just got into the game so if you don't like touchwiz, you can flash his ROM too which uses another launcher but i would say equally great. Comes down to preference and what works best.
And to get root and clockwork, I followed bubbys
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1287776
It seems to get root you have to use odin, but once thats done you can use clockwork to flash ROMs. If you get issues Odin is there for support.
Thanks! Too bad my girlfriend starts work in an hour
Take a look at this thread Id really recommend to check the links I have linked to save you some pain....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1309078
So wait... after reading that thread it says that the bootloader keeps a record of everytime you flash with Odin? So if something happens to her phone and we need to take it in, they will know we rooted it?
A good reason to use starbursts rom is because its just way smoother some how and he stream lined the rom and did a bunch of tweaks that make noticably fast/smoother. That's the reason most are using it

Cool, thanks, I got worried for a little bit there... I mean, we got it rooted and everything just fine, but I failed to mention to my girlfriend that there might be a slight problem if we tried to take the phone in ... I figured that problem would get solved eventually but it's good to know I'm in the clear
yeah I wouldn't worry about it, chances are if you flash everything stock theres still a counter chances are they wont notice or pay it much attention. its possible but, I've had friends take their evo in with security off and everything else flashed stock and it was ok.
Bring her to me I will root her. Don't bring your cable I will use mine to plug in her smoothly in order to root through odin.

You can use a jig, it will get rid of the yellow triangle on bootscreen and bring the counter down to zero.
The jig costs $7 MAX, all you do is plug it into microusb while phone is on, and the phone reboots automatically, and everything is back to normal. Process takes about 30 seconds max, and you can use the jig multiple times, with how many ever samsung phones, it is NOT a one time use deal.

What do I need to know about rooting an Epic 4G?

Work just picked up a bunch of Epic 4G's. Battery life is horrible. I want to calibrate my battery so I'm wondering what the best root method for these phones is.
I currently have Gingerbread 2.3.5 on this phone.
I've also got a Epic 4G Touch, that had one click root, looks like these don't?

There is no one-click solution for Gingerbread. You would have to Odin EC05 for that. Here is how to root Gingerbread stock phones:

If you mean sponge or soft-brick then yes in the Stickies at the top of Development. It requires using Odin or Heimdall and your current data will be lost.

There is a more "pain in the ass" process of rooting your phone if your already on gingerbread. I will link you to some videos that should get you going.
You WILL need ODIN to get rooted. There are ways to root your phone without it, but ODIN makes things alot more simple. ODIN will become your best friend, trust me.
First, you will need to follow this step...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwFRzzIqouE
Once you have done that, you will need to move onto this step...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWOLEXqAeCc
Of course, use the latest version of ACS Recovery, which can be found on the link to that video.
Once you have completed those steps, you will be rooted, running ACS Recovery Version 5, or ClockworkMOD Recovery 5.0.2.7
Hope this was helpful.
If you run into trouble like it gets stuck at the Samsung screen for more than 5 minutes, you can return to Froyo stock and OTA back to stock Gingerbread and try again. Here is the thread for that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
You can also PM me with questions once you get started.
I just flashed my first ROM (CleanGB) on to my Epic4G and reset the battery statistics. Along with using TB to freeze the DRM and SNS apps, I'm seeing great battery life. Thanks to everyone who contributes to this site!
Its not hard hahaha that's what I'd tell you anyways its really simple if you can get Odin to com its all downhill from there. Just thought I'd give you some encouragement since you've already been given directions. Never be afraid to root the epic is nearly impossible to brick.

My stock cable works fine. Grab Odin as it is an all purpose life saver. Are you planning on rooting and using custom roms or just using root apps?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
The stock cable worked fine for me when I rooted my Epic, too. I used the Rooting EI22 Gingerbread Instructions from Android Central, and fortunately it went very smoothly. It was my first time rooting my phone, so I was glad I didn't have any major problems. As noted above, you'll probably want to substitute one of the newer custom recoveries in place of the one in those instructions though. I thought I'd offer these text instructions (with screen shots) as an alternative to the videos posted above.
Regarding use of ROMs or just root apps, I actually rooted mainly to get the GPS and silent camera fixes. I'm probably going to want to use a custom ROM though, but am still currently on stock rooted EI22 (with those two fixes applied). I'm slightly concerned about getting all my apps and data back if I install a new ROM. I've got backup apps (Titanium Backup, non-pay right now, and MyBackup Root), as well as a nandroid backup from what I've read advanced restore of just data is possible, but don't really know what's the easiest/smoothest way to get things back. I might want to go with the MostlyStock ROM, since it probably changes the least amount of stuff, or something with a non-wiping version (I've seen at least one, but forget which it was offhand). Tips on how to make moving between ROMs while keeping apps and data easy to restore would be appreciated. Thanks!

The hardest part, for me anyway, is picking a ROM to stick with. Right now I'm addicted to trying out as many things as I can. Right now I'm running ThunderHawk but I'm sure that will change soon. I will tell you I haven't have a lot of luck with ROM management tools. ACS updater doesn't seem to have anything new, installs from ROM toolbox don't seem to work, ROM manager has worked the best for me so far.
Get a BB cable trust us when we say your stock one will go south on you at the most critical time! I use my stock for charging only. I have read many of stories on here where the issue was the cable. If you don't have a BB cable laying around check amazon out $1.97 plus shipping. I picked up 4 a few months back I keep 2 at home one in work and one in my laptop bag.

New user

Hi I am gonna receive my epic touch any minute now,
Wanted to ask a few questions.
1.. is ICS officially out for this phone ' if yes can anyone link me to the method to root the ICS or may be a custom Odin rooted IVs build.
2.. I am sure many ICS Roms and even jb Roms are out there, which of them works reasonably well and give good battery life along with full functionality.
3..I have heard that sprint has blocked the USB tethering as well as the WiFi hotspot options in this phone ' is that correct ?
4.. I have been a Samsung fascinate user up until now and am pretty well versed with the Odin and cwm and flashing and stuff, does it all work similarly on epic touch as well. ? I mean vol down plus the USB cable puts it in download mode and by giving three fingers you can put it to cwm recovery.
Is there anything specific about his phone that I should be aware of.

Ok kinda a lot. FF18 is the official ICS version. Sfhub's one click FF18 + root and CWM. Is you best bet. Flash agats 4.2 kernel/recovery (some people including me have issues with 4.4 kernel. ) this phone has a brick bug with wiping in an unsafe recovery. Agats kernel and venum kernel/recovery is safe.
Tweaked stock rom and M'ICS 1.3 are really good for battery life fully functional.
Yes but there is a hotspot hack now for it. On M'ICS page. Or download wifi teather.
To get into download mode. Its vol down and power. Warning screen comes up then vol up. Keep battery in you dont need to have the cable pluged in.
Biggest thing is follow the devs direction for their roms and read how not to brick.
Hope i answered all your questions. Any others let me know. You can also PM me if ya want.

[Q] Just got this phone and need some general info from

So I am a well seasoned samsung vet. I had the vibrant the s2 I curently have the note 2 running the latest cm 10.1 nightliy and now I am the proud owner of a brand new s3 Yay. So I was wondering if this is the same as the note 2 as far as design across carriers and software across carriers. Can we use att roms without port or kernel changes? Are the AOSP roms identical? I havent looked yet but I assume that all I got to do is use odin to install twrp or cwm and then I can install su and root. Also It came with jb 4.1.1 the build number is t999uvdlja. Is that the latest build? every time i check for an update it tells me i have to wait in line. not word for word but that is what it is telling me. I have never seen that. So I am just wondering if I am up to date. I dont know if I will be doing any heavy modifications because it is my girls phone so I might just root it and leave it at that.
You practically up to date. There was a newer base pushed but very minor changes. If anything, you can always flash the new modem that came with it to try it out for better results.
You are right about the root process
You can use att builds... Just may have to edit build.prop to make it say t999 and not t747
Enjoy
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
Thanks for the quick answer galaxys3guy I have one question about the root process. On the newer android builds like what came on my note2 there is a built in fail safe that automatically rewrites the stock recovery. So 1. has that been implemented on the latest jb builds on this phone? And if so how do we get around it? When I went to root my note 2 I actually was able to use the exploit that samsung screwed up. If I remember corectly that exploit was originally found on the s3 but I know that samsung recently updated the nate2 so I would assume they updated the s3 to patch the exploit. So the only other way is to A install a custom rom with root via odin or use ADB to disable that function that rewrites recovery. I looked around and didnt see much about rooting for this phone. So what I think I will do is use chainfire's autoroot. Then flash twrp via odin and be done with it. But I was just wondering about the workarounds. As you can probally tell I only half know what I am talking about. I am self taught so sometimes things just dont make sence to me when they should it takes me a while but I usually get it.
Lol I'm glad u know half of what u are talking about cuz I don't
All I did... Was booted into download mode... Put twrp in the PDA section of Odin, and flashed the recovery. (After it was done... If I remember right, I had to unplug and manually reboot because something with Odin was not working... But that was just for me... So if u have that issue where your phone won't boot after it says pass, just unplug and reboot urself). From there I booted into recovery and flashed supersu...

Hey congrats on New gs3 bro!
I kind of went thru something similar to your rooting proces.
You should check out galaxys3root.com. it is super helpful site. basically when you run Odin to root ( installing custom recovery like cwm or twrp, ) you need to uncheck all tick boxes especially auto-reboot and F.reset time buttons. Otherwise phone will reboot and reinstall stock recovery and in some case stuck on boot.. when you un-check them phone will not reboot after installing. You just pull battery after install and boot into custom recovery by volume+ , home and power together. I'm afraid there no patch that I know of ATM. Good luck..

I did have a problem with my T-Mobile branded S3 going back to stock recovery and found there are 2 files that need to be renamed using the file explorer of your choice.
install-recovery.sh located in the /system/etc folder
recovery-from-boot.p located in the /system folder
I just add a .bak to the file name. Once this is done install CWM again and it will be OK. Also of note it will trip the counter built into the phone every time CWM is used. Download Triangle Away from the market to reset the counter when needed.
okay Now I see. So One way to fix this is to uncheck everything in odin so that the phone doesnt reboot itself. Then pull the battery and reboot into recovery right away and that will somehow overide the rewrite process.
But GTwalling I have q question. Do you need to be rooted to rename those files? Or does the security leak make that not matter? I know that the leak basically makes one of the partitions read-write when it should be read only. I am almost positive that the last update that you guys got would have patched the exploit because it did with the note2. But in any case basically I would go into /system/ect folder then find the file: install-recovery.sh then rename that file so it should look like this when done install-recovery.sh.bak then do it with the other file as well. Is that right? basically all you are doing is making the file not run without deleting it. Cool. I just learned something. It seems like the peope in this fourm are cool and helpful. Maybe I will learn alot here.
Another thing I noticed that there is a toolkit from mskip I think. I know he does good work from his toolkit for the s2. Maybe there is a way to use his tool kit to disable that rewrite process. The one for the note2 has that feature but it is not made by mskip he actually wanted to make one and posted in the general fourm for ideas and a bunch of the idiots that are in that fourm were like we have one already and we dont need another. I tried to encurage him to make one and not listen to those idiots but It never came to be. But i'm sure if I msg him and tell him he can put that in if it isnt already. I personally dont like to use toolkits because I want to do everything myself but I also think they are a way of the future. Alot of people just want to point and click to do things and dont want to know what the whole thing is.
