Patriot 32GB Class 10 SD Card - myTouch 4G Accessories

So, just received my new card in the mail yesterday. I got all my information transferred over. Believe it or not, I ran out of room on my 16GB card. I have a bunch of movies and back ups (backups for this ROM are HUGE!). Anyways, on my pc with a usb2.0 reader my Write speeds are average 15.3 MB/sec and read speeds are 17.5 MB/sec (peaked a couple times at 18.3 MB/sec.
Using the SD Card Tester app on my phone Write speed was 11.35 MB/sec and Read was 16.71 MB/sec.
Actually usable space after format is 30.9 GB. Overall very happy with the purchase. I know its a little pricey, but I hope I don't have to worry about space anymore and I don't need to bring a separate Movie SD Card when I travel.

No it does not support Class 10 nativity via device he is just using card reader. You won't see past Class 6 any improvement as threshold is near Class 4. Now unlike the OP I don't trust anyone other than SanDisk or Kingston when it comes to flash memory and have strong data to back that up also. Believe it or not jmwils3 from our last thread ATM I am actually doing extended test on the Kingston 32GB Class 4 microSDHC ill post the results shortly.

For movie play back, video recording (the time for it to write the video to the card) and things of the nature yes. Let me give you an example. My wife and I recent traveled for New Years Eve to see old friends. She has my nexus and I copied a couple new movies for her. I set the video sample rate high (like 1500) trying to increase the quality. Well, her phone was choppy and mine wasn't. She has a class 4 card and I had a class 6.
With that said I could just use a class 6 but I backup my SD Card often (like once every 2 days, lost everything once before) and HATE waiting forever for 15+GB of info to transfer so I utilize that aspect too.
Lets not forget if I ever decide to run Apps2SD some day I'd hate for my SD to slow it down.

Well technically Class 6 would be advisable but Class 10 is overkill and in your device you will let me say this again NEVER get to use it but you can use card reader as I stated before in this and other thread.
Ill look in to this device but my two cents are this card will have alot of data integrity issues dealing with data corruption. Not being biased here but for $99 it does seem good deal. BTW OP this card is giving you 30.9 GB? Kingston 32GB is giving me 29.8GB.
Code:
df /dev/mnt/sdcard
File system: FAT32 (0x0c)
Used space: 16.0 KB (16,384 bytes)
Free space: 29.8 GB (32,073,891,840 bytes)
Keep in mind we are limited to SD2.0 as this card is using SDA 3.0 but will be throttled due to device unless you use card reader. Also OP does the card read as 33GB? some are already claiming they having issues as FAT32 supports 32GB, I wonder how they did that lol

I keep trying to run the command via adb or terminal that you have in your code up there but it keeps saying it cant find the mount point. Either way, in Settings>SD & phone storage it shows 30.91GB available space after a fresh format. See pic below. As for how big the card is I don't know, everything says 30.91GB.

As for this part, I know it doesn't support class 10, I like that for fast backup and movie transfers. I did, however, test the SD Card using SD Card Tester on the market. This test was done ON THE PHONE, not with a card reader. There are 2 results below, First is with a Kingston 8GB Class 4 and the second is the Patriot 32GB Class 10. I ran the test several times on each card the results were consistently the same. Take the information for what you will, but what I'm seeing, having a faster card does make a difference.

lol nice and here I am once again getting away with another OJ style crime I hope no one works at Kingston here lol. At least I extracted valuable data which Ill post shortly so other folks can decide which to buy.

Dear Tech Support,
Product Number: SDC4/32GB-2ADP
Problem: This part has never worked. Well, a lot of users are having issue with Kingston 32GB microSDHC Class 4 cards as it seems its inferior, it took me 27min to transfer just 198MB. Where the same task is done on SanDisk 16GB Class 2 in under 2min. So why is Kingston producing piece of **** card and selling them for 100+? Alot of users in various forum can verify that this is piece of ****. This is bad batch so ill deal with Kingston for RMA directly.
Troublshooting done: Seems the speed is improved when the item is directly allocated in memory thus saving time from accessing it and transferring it. I am not sure if the device is using SD 2.0 but other people with SanDisk 32GB Class 2 is outrunning this Class 4 card. We are only getting like 700KB/s which is no where near class 4 standard.

I call that owned for making me thoroughly testing the card
The data below is the actual IOPs from System (USB: Standard-A) to Device (USB: Micro-B) via USB (USB 2.0/SD 2.0). I am not using any type of card reader for this test as we only want the actual data rate of the card itself natively while its mounted in the device.

Looks like your testing resaults are worse than mine on Kingston Class 4 cards.

lol I am glad I socialed them in to accepting it I had this card for few months and only reason I kept it was due to higher read still was better than SanDisk's read speed which was sustained around 7-8MB/s. Hopefully the plan don't backfire as I already placed order with NewEgg and still have to ship it back to Kingston. So in the end saved $60 or so and got class 10 card with 1gb extra space.

Free BUMP:
This card has been verified and tested by HKM (HyperNodeSTHNS). Its class then with min 10mbps write/12mbps read. They selling for $99 so get it if you are looking for mSD 32gb.

Where are they selling the card?

You can't correlate video playback to SD class because you were using 2 different phone models. When I had my HD2, I had no problem running Android off of a class 4 card. This was with the preloaded high quality rip of Transformers that came with the card.

Hey fellas, I just got my patriot 32g card and after copying my 8 gig over to it last night it has given me write errors and format errors. Is there a specific app or way to format it so I can get back to enjoying my sekc phone? Thanks

Now keep in mind the card I received could simply be just defective so I filed RMA for replacement.
The card would read as READ ONLY (R/O) thus data couldn't be written to it but still could be accessed. Which quickly turned in to card being corrupted (UFS: Unsupported File System) as the card decided to erase the partition itself along with all data inside thus reading it as "Blank SDCard".
So after the card was corrupted the first time I had properly fully formatted the card thoroughly, but when it happened the second time it almost jeopardized my data. So instinctively I went in forensics mode and had to manually extract the data using low level data reconstruction techniques from the damaged corrupted partition. As I never formatted the card I was able to reconstruct the file allocation table thus able to read the raw data from the sectors.

i had a kingston class 4 and it gave me read-only errors constantly. just bought a sandisk 16gb at radio shack for 30 bucks this weekend and its been smooth sailing. too bad that don't carry the 32gb

specifically i get the "sd card blank or unsupported filesystem" error. im currently googling like any good nerd but i've already tried another sdcard so the phone isn't the issue.... which is very curious to me bc none of you have had this same issue. any comments or ideas appreciated.

[INFO]32GB MicroSDHC Class 4 card VS File Allocation Unit Size

Before reading:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1150369
I used a Lexar Class 10 32GB card, pretty impressed with its sequential accessing speed but really disappointed when the card performed exactly the same in random accessing speed as shown in the thread.
I've been using it for about 4 months, over these months, it has corrupted 7 times due to rapid random access while updating apps, and the phone loses response during app update.
So few days ago I ordered Sandisk 32GB class 4, using CrystalDiskMark, I conducted a test of file allocation unit size VS performance, please refer to the attached file.
I'm currently using it with 8KB file allocation unit size.
I hope this is gonna help some people regard formatting their SD cards
My Lexar 32GB class 10 still works fine, just the random access speed is too slow, the sequential access speed is excellent, perhaps it will be more suitable for a camera or video camera, if you're interested in getting this used card, please PM me.

SD Card Speed Postings! Participation wanted!

ok I see a lot of quadrant scores and stuff here .. which is great and all .. but I would like to see what everyone is using as far as their sd card goes. This will help others who see this choose an sd card that is proven to be effective here .. a reliable source to say.
I would like:
1) Brand, Size of card, and Class rating
2) Price and where it was purchased at
3) what you think of the card
4) a screen shot of the speeds .. I used SD Tools (free and it lets you save a screenshot)
so here is mine:
1)OEM systems 32GB class 10
2) $57.25 on amazon http://www.amazon.com/OEM-microSD-m...4AJO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1320822033&sr=8-2
3) I really havent decided if I like this card or not .. when I run the benchmarks in my class 10 8gb card from sandisk the speeds are much better (15mb write to 8mb write now). I dont know if I can tell a difference in the performance of the phone ... maybe a little loading pictures in my album... but I also have my Nikon DSLR 7000 full size photos on there as well .. so its to be expected i guess.
4)

if the write speed is ABOVE the class number, then it means you got a good card
in your case it was rated Class 4, so it supposed to guarantee a minimum of 4 MB/s write to the SD card
and your score shows 5 MB/s that means it's good, and not a fake counterfeit or defective unit, which might have shown 2 MB/s
even on the oldest of my phones like the Treo650 it was able to easily write above Class 6 speeds

i've been using them for many years already, so they are safe
they offer life time warranty, however it takes a bit of work for them to replace your dead cards
Patriot 32Gb Class 10
Originally bought this card maybe one week after it was released, approx one year ago. Bought it on Amazon for approx $105. Recently totally crashed and could NOT be formatted. I did have off and on weird issues with SD card not recognized, and basically had to reformat. Was running the card in Nexus one, as well as the Sensation 4G. Patriot did an RMA on the card and the replacement runs twice as fast as the original. I think my first card had some weird bugs. Glad it died off. Patriot did honor their unconditional 5 year warranty BTW. I typically get 10MB/s write speed when copying ROMs over from my PC over USB. I used to get only 3Mb's at best with the original card. Using BeastMod II v2.1 ROM.
Edit:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010807 go to this thread and it describes how changing the cache settings can alter read speeds. I seem to get better results using 4096 setting, while I used to use 1024 setting on my Nexus one. Best to test settings for yourself. My read speeds increased to a consistent 21.0MB/s. Write speeds were anywhere from 9.0 to 10. The cache settings only affect the read speeds, BTW as far as I know.

yes, the cache only works for read, and it doesn't improve it by much on fast phone like ours, is good for older phones that were Sub 1 Ghz
as for your writing speed, it did not even reach the minimum guaranteed of 10 MB/s
you are only getting 9 MB/s write on both test
Yet another reason why i do not trust that brand Patriot

Crappy MicroSD Card -_-

Now here's a question for all of you:
What is the MicroSD Card that is included with your phone? I know it's a 16GB, but does yours have a company branded on it, and also what class is your SD card?
The reason I ask this is because I want to know if they switched the SD Card on my phone with a crappy one and took the good one just before I picked it up. The SD card that came with my phone is just a plain generic Class 2 card. CLASS 2!! It doesn't even have where it is made at. I'm thinking, are you serious?!?! The transfer rate is so horrible, averaging only at 1.5MBps. Takes me over 30 minutes to transfer about one 1GB of files.
My friend who got the rezound at least got a Class 4 card, even though it's generic and made in Taiwan. But his transfer rate is averaging at 15MBps.
So I just wanna double check with all of you and make sure we all have the same type of SD card.
p.s. Also, this could be the reason why the phone sometimes perform sluggishly. I have a feeling when it pulls anything from the SD Card, may it be a large app, music or videos etc, it will have to wait to read from it.
OH! could this be the MAIN reason behind the slow response when taking pictures? I read that this phone has a horrible camera speed, but it might be due to the SD Card being slow and can only write at very low speed to the card.
I also noticed the slow performance of the included micro sd card, and I can't even access it from my card reader, but only through the phone's "mass storage" mode. Anyway just ordered a Sandisk class 4 32GB card from amazon...
The default card that came with mine is a Class 4 8GB made by Kingston. It doesn't say Kingston on it, but I have an actual Kingston SD card to compare it to.

If that's the default save spot, then yes, that could possibly be the issue. How big are the pictures?

8GB class 4?? wow that is small in size, although it is a class 4 card. Livid, is it because you are on Bell? Could this be carrier related? Also, how is your camera? Is it having that speed issue in between pictures?

bmxant, I took some pics and at full res, they average at around 1.3-1.5 MB, which is just right there with the speed, giving it a second or 2 delay in storing/saving them onto the sd card.
Sandisk Class4 16gb in mine. Mine was ordered and sent directly from AT&T site...I'm leaning toward them swapping out the card on yours.
If you're only writing at 1.5Mb's, that would definitely cause an extra second of lag. Would be nice if we could see a comparison between the Class 2 SD card vs Class 4.
How much cheaper could they get? It's bad enough the phone has 4GB of internal storage. They should of included either a 32GB Class 2, or 16GB Class 4.
Edit: Just read Namuna's post. Why would they swap out the card?

Alright thanks, I just need some more confirmations and I can visit the store again and confront them with it. I will make them open a fresh box in front of me and check it, unless of course they've swapped all in that store lol!
@aquariuz23: It probably is carrier related. You guys got double on the SD storage and RAM storage versus what we got. I feel a little screwed in that regard, but meh.
For photo taking, it only took one second to snap the picture and store it on the card. The gallery took 5 seconds to read 84 pictures that were stored on the SD card.

That sounds pretty good, what does Antutu say your write speed is?
Topram Class6 16GB here. SD Tools report 18.5MB/sec read and 5.5MB/sec write, which is pretty accurate for C6. (btw, card manufactured in 2009)
This phone I bought used, can't confirm the card is the original.
6.3 MB/s write and 13 MB/s read. It's about average for a Class 4 SD card.
what do u guys use to test the read/writes of the sd card? I wanna do a test on mine as well.

I always used Antutu
Tested with SD Tools
http://www.amazon.com/KOMPUTERBAY-C...&s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1325197909&sr=1-11
Think this is worth it?
I am getting an average of 2.9MB/s Write and 11.1MB/s Read. Seems like a typical class 2 card. Took it a while to run the test too since it's so slow lol.
I got 5.4MB/s write, 15.5MB/s read (Antutu) on the 16GB Class 2 card from my Captivate that I wiped and stuck in the Nitro and gave the one that came with it to my Captivate (running hacksung's ICS). Is the included card that bad?
According to AnTuTu:
3.4 MB/s write
>50 MB/s read
According to SD Tools:
5.7 MB/s write
20 MB read
Nothing like some consistency between utils.

That just crippled my trust in AnTuTu's tests...sorry but there is no microSD card with >50mb/sec read speed, it's impossible.

32GB or 64GB MicroSD cards for Galaxy S3

I picked up samsung galaxy s3 today and looking for a good sd card. i am considering these two options:
SanDisk Ultra 64 GB microSDXC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card 30MB/s with Adapter SDSDQUA-064G-U46A
and another by Samsung
Samsung 32GB High Speed MicroSDHC Memory Card
samsung one seems like a good deal, compared to pricey sandisk.
64gb because it has exFat format 4gb+ file won't be a problem. I have got the same one.

You should get a 64gb card, because you will have a lot of space for yout stuff and you can format it as exFat!

No issues with it formatted at exFat? I know someone else with a S3 had issues and had to format it to FAT32.
64gb because MOAR IS BETTER! I formatted mine to FAT32 because from what I've read and experienced with my other devices, it's just safer that way. I've had issues right off the bat using exFAT on some devices (mostly Samsung) or gradually the card will become corrupted (I've lost about 3 full microsd cards full of data so far). From what I've read this is due to Samsung using a half baked implementation of exFAT. exFAT is a patent-pending, proprietary file system created by Microsoft, so if Samsung, or any other OEM wanted to use the full implementation they would have to pay licensing fees. So while you can format it to exFAT using a PC, the way Samsung devices handle it there is high chance of it getting corrupted.

How do you format with FAT32? Just using format option in Samsung S 3?
I've been experiencing problem where from time to time, it just corrupt and give me SD card error, and refuse to mount it. I have a 64GB Sandisk Micro SD on Verizon S 3.

I used my laptop's built in SD reader that supports XC cards and just formatted to FAT32. You can use any PC program that formats. I personally used an app called guiformat (http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm). It's a simple app specifically to format stuff to FAT32. I've heard you can simply use the window's formatter but I've also read of some people that had issues with that.

hi, Im a noob. Im getting galaxy s3 today. I been reading threads and searching within the tread but someone say something some one else says something else. so Im confused! especially since im noob. Which one is it for god sake!!! lol
Q. Which is class is better? I hear on other threads a class 2 or 4 is good but a class 6 and 10 is not necessary because for a higher speed the manufacturer use the randoms speeds, access speeds to make it faster. That class 10 don't necessarily means better, class 10 is too fast for for the phone that it will freeze or ppl having problems. You need a class 6 for apps2sd or Data2sd.
So im thinking a class 6 would be good for me since I use apps2sd alot, roms, I will download some music, vids and movies. 32gb class 6 SanDisk - Mobile Ultra 32GB microSDHC Class 6 Memory Card bestbuy sale 4 $30 has anyone body tried it?
Can someone who really knows tech stuff about sd cards answer plz
Thank you, sorry for all the questions...

I've personally been using Class 10s for my devices and haven't had any issues as long as it's formatted in FAT32.
The difference between the sdhc cards and the sdxc cards is that the xc are intended to be used on usb3 systems so that they can take advantage of the speed. This is important when you are loading the card with your music library or unloading it with your photos. (and you don't do it mounted inside the phone.)
A Sandisk 64GB sdxc class ten card won't get the 30mb read speed advertised. It gets regular class 10 speed, the gs3 has no speed improvements when using this type of mcard. Here's a speed test in the phone of the Sandisk 64GB sdxc I got the other day.
IME, exfat is sensitive to power level change and anything that stalls or disrupts any read/write operation. However, if the phone says that it is damaged, just put it in to your adapter and a pc with exfat support and run chkdsk /f (with the fix options selected).

The default system as far as I know in SGS3 is exfat. Use a free downloadable tool by name mini tools and format the card to fat 32. I have a 64 GB micro sd class 10 sandisk. I have no problems using it . My 32 gb card was running out of space because of music files If you are getting a new card you can do a surface test with the tool i mentioned above so that you know whether it has any defective sectors. It does take some time though.

This is correct, it formats exfat on the 64Gb. I did this yesterday and using myTerminal app, the mount command shows that the card is formatted exfat.
Now, it's an interesting thing, exfat is a licensed format, and Samsung paid for a license, however anyone with a rooted phone has some sort of Busybox installed which replaces most of the exfat commands with Linux standard ones.... is this better or worse?
I have a question for the people who have formatted fat32, how big is the space on the 64Gb? on exfat it's 59.47Gb what's yours?

Thanks for the reply guys. As I'll be using files bigger than 4gb exFAT would be the best choice. I've read in some threads though that this file system corrupts in the s3 over time, she was the card fills up. I don't know if this is true since it was only mentioned thrice in 3 different posts. Can anyone verify this?

My old 32gb is mostly standard stuff that I keep from phone to phone (like contacts backups music). So I have a copy on my desktop. Anyway, I had 29Gb filled on the card as a normal condition with Nandroid backups and TI backups.
When I was transferring this to the new 64Gb card, I was trying to use a 4 port USB OTG with the old card in the USB stick adapter. I fumbled with the power supply to the 4port and the phone didn't like it and unmounted the card, and wouldn't mount it again. I put it into my desktop with an adapter (on XP you need a patch for exfat from MS) and ran a chkdsk /f on it (took some time as I don't have USB3). The chkdsk finished (I made a backup to the desktop since some of the nandroid was new.) and put the card back into the phone. It worked for a few hours, I was listening to music on the card. The battery ran low, and I shut down to swap batteries and the card wouldn't mount again and claimed damaged and needed a format. Since I had everything backed up (and still had the old card, too), I just formatted it in the phone. Used the OTG to get the data back on from the old card. Everything's been good since 30+ hours without turning the phone off. But as I write this, I swapped batteries (full shutdown) and when I rebooted, the card wouldn't mount (and doesn't say that it's corrupted).
It also takes more than a minute (maybe two or so) to mount the card when the phone boots. This also makes it totally unusable for applications being stored on it or data for applications on it or for swapping apps like App2SD where it links the external card to the internal card and visa versa. If the app tried to access data on the card while it's being checked, it may not have the code to support the error returned. If the app needs to be running at bootup, few are going to wait until the card is ready, and the os will query for the card. I know that this was a problem on GB, and is one of the reasons so many oems are including more very fast internal storage in the phones.
Thanks guys. I would probably try exfat and see it works... FAT32 is always an option!
Just got my card an hour ago. Right out of the box I tried copying a bunch of files and I encountered an error. Reformatted it using windows and now it runs fine. So I guess it would be best to format it again and not use it right out of the box.

fwiw. I kept trying to mount the card, and finally got to the point where it said it was 'corrupted'. I put the card into a windows box without problems, could read the data, etc. Ran a chkdisk /f to find and fix any errors, no problems. Tried to put it back into the phone and it still wouldn't mount. Gonna give Samsung a call since it works in Windows, it either Samsung or Busybox that's the issue.

I ran a chkdsk /f again, no errors. Then I downloaded the sdformatter from the sdcard working group. https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/ this is a free formating program that will make sure you have formated to the sdcard org standards. You can not choose the file system. You can choose to do different types of erase as a part of the format.
Anyway, after the chkdisk, I tried to mount the card but it would not. I then made another backup of the data, and did a long format (exfat) with a simple erase rather than the zeroes erase. Copying the data back and lo and behold it mounted. My phone though hasn't been off since though. Since I don't have usb 3 the formatting and data transfers take hours to complete. I am going to have to get a usb3 card for at least one pc and a usb3 card reader.
Samsung was not any help and wanted me to do a factory reset.

MicroSD speed spec?

Any idea what speed MicroSD cards the HTC 10 will support? It'd be nice to get a high-spec UHS card to use the expandable storage! Coming from a Galaxy S4 and S2, my last HTC device was an HTC Desire - so I'm not sure what the previous generation of HTC devices supported.
I guess it supports U3, because A9 does.
Good to hear, looks like I'll be upgrading my MicroSD card then, thanks!
Great news. I have a U3 card but don't get the full benefit of it at the moment. When I searched for this information on precious phones I could never find anything!
I called HTC today to see if they could tell me if the HTC 10 will support UHS-II but after consulting with the build team they still did not understand what I was asking about so hopefully the full specs on the bus type for the memory card reader will be released soon. If anyone knows if HTC 10 supports UHS-II please comment as I am considering buying the new sandisk card or the samsung pro + U3 card depending on what the bus type is.

If you're getting Samsung Pro+ U3, you don't need UHS-II. Its specs are:
UHS-I / U3 / Class 10
Max. Read Speed: 95 MB/s
Max. Write Speed: 90 MB/s
It's a fast card. I got several 64 GBs when it was on sale for $28. The 128 GB version is available but almost double the price of slower 128GB cards, but still not a bad deal IMO.

Thank you for the response. I was going to get a UHS-II CARD if the HTC 10 used that bus. If they stick with the UHS-I then I was going to go with the samsung pro plus. Glad to here you like your card, I have read nothing but positive remarks on the samsung cards.
So which card (in terms of speed) to get for optimal user experience?
So I was anxiously waiting for HTC's reply about the UHS-I vs UHS-II.
Randomly looked at the SD820 specs five minutes ago. I'm feeling so dumb right now.

Well there's our answer.
And since the A9 supported UHS-I U3, the 10 will also support UHS-I U3.
It will NOT "fully" support UHS-II U3 cards, they will work (backwards compatibility) but you will not get the full speed benefit of them!
Maybe we'll get SD 4.0 (UHS-II) with Snapdragon 830 or whatever it will be called..

I'm going to assume you mean with Adoptable Storage "enabled".
Well, of course an UHS-I U3 card. Sure you can buy and use an UHS-II U3 card but there is no real benefit to that because the 10 fully supports only UHS-I U3. Also UHS-II U3 cards are really expensive..
For user experience, buy the microSD card with the fastest random 4K read and write speed possible.
Why "random 4K"? Because what we do on our devices is inherently random. Opening an app, updating an app, skipping music files and such. Only things that we do on our devices which are sequential in nature would be recording a video, taking a photo, downloading a large file and so on. (or transferring big files PC<>phone)
Sequential read/write speeds with SD cards (or SSD or HDD) are what's advertised most of the time and those speeds are already waaay more than enough so no need to focus on those aspects!
For example phones record 4K video usually at about 40-65Mbit/s which is 5-8.1MB/s. And that's sequential, not random.
That's about the heaviest sequential write operation we do on our phones. Downloading a large OS update could be "heavier" if you have really fast internet speed.
For random 4K read, I consider 10MB/s or above as really good. 8-9MB/s or below, I personally wouldn't bother.
For random 4K write, at least 1MB/s. 2MB/s is nice and above is excellent. (biggest impact=App install/update, OS update etc)
For speed reference and a reason for the above speed recommendations:
Anandtech's internal NAND random 4K speed tests from Galaxy S7 review part 1.

You can for example google "make model crystaldiskmark" and see the results.
If you don't find CrystalDiskMark results for some specific microSD card
a) don't bother because it's some random card
b) rummage through Newegg or Amazon etc buyer reviews. Occasionally some kind soul will benchmark his/her recent purchase and include the numbers in his/her review.
For example the Sandisk Extreme microSDXC 64GB is really nice

Kingston UHS-I U3 microSDXC 64GB also looks nice at the first glance but look at the random 4K write speed, that's horrendous! (don't even touch it with a ten foot pole)
Lexar 1800x microSDXC 64GB is one of the best I've ever seen. But it's so expensive (100€'s) ;(
Disclaimer: when you are looking at CrystalDiskMark results for 4K speed, do not look at the QD32 or Q32Tx numbers.
Only look at the 4K speed numbers that don't have the QD32 or Q32Tx text next to them, that's the number we are interested in.
QD stands for Queue Depth. Long story short: Queue Depth means how many read and/or write (I/O) operations are queue'd one after the other.
QD32 is a REALLY high and ridiculous number. You do not see that kind of queue depth with I/O operations on a phone, not on a PC, and heck, most of the time not even in servers either.
The speed number which does not have QD32 or Q32Tx text next to it means that the Queue Depth is 1. Only 1 read or write operation is queue'd. That's the normal kind of QD you see in phones or PC's.

For music listening I would say no. The difference will be when you want to save large files to and from the card. This is when the differences in speed per second add up over minutes when you are talking about gigabytes of data transfered.
In reality, this shouldn't be a big issue unless you are constantly moving big files. I guess the most relatable for me would be twrp backup to SD card. For a file of that size I would only imagine an extra 30 seconds to 1 minute so its still fine.

great thanks for the info. I thought so but best checking. I occasionally download or copy over the odd movie file over wifi from my NAS but happy with the current read/write speeds i get on my m7 internal storage so im sure the htc10 and ultra card combo will be an improvement anyway!

You will bottleneck in that scenario... But I would imagine it would be the WiFi causing the slow down rather than the card.
It will be most notable when downloading and uploading via a cable. Or saving to the card from the phone (like twrp which is generating data for the card rather than getting it from the USB cable or online).
I don't think you will have anything to worry about here buddy.
I wouldn't think it comes with a UHS-II bus since no phone in existence does.

so i ordered the 128gb Sandisk Ultra card... i know it is slightly slower than the Extreme range but I wanted more than 64gb to store all my music etc... will I actually notice any issues running this card rather than one of the faster ones?

If all you're doing is storing music and pictures on it, you won't see a problem. If you decide to use a slower card as expanded storage though, it's going to be a bottleneck for your applications.
I'm going to be doing some research into the fastest card the phone will support, methinks!

I am still not sure if it's worth to use it as an expanded storage. I ordered a Samsung extreme pro but I'm undecided about using it externally or not... Anyone has input on this? Any other phones that allow this?

I think this should be possible on any device that has received marshmallow, I used temporally on my oneplus x with cyanogenmod 13, worked fine but I can't speak about performance, I'm not a smartphone gamer and I don't record in 4k

Looks like the Sandisk Extreme Pro is the best suit for adoptable storage use:

Or is this overkill?

That should be the best one, you want u3. So SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS I - U3 Should be in the 40-50 dollar range for a 64gb. They don't make them any bigger.
