Themes and Rom question - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am rooted but have not tried any custom roms yet. Do you have to have a custom rom to use a theme? For example this theme: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=913576

Kinda... you more or less need to be on a de-odexed rom to easily apply custom themes, which means a rom other than the stock odexed rom.
Although, if you follow the instructions in THIS thread, you can do it on a stock odexed rom (usefull if you want to use MobileAP or such).

And there is a stock deodexed di18 rom out there somehwere.
But you pretty much need to flash something that is deodexed to have an easy time of it.

[Q] Blank screen after theme install

I just rooted my phone, flashed superuser and backed it up. Now I installed a theme, but after it gets passed the 4G screen it makes me force close a lot of apps, did I install it wrong? PLEASE HELP!
You installed a non compatible theme most likely. Restore your backup

How do I know if it's a compatible theme?
Most themes say which rom its for. If you were on the stock rom you need to find a stock rom theme
We're comin from a pure power source.
Damn, sorry I'm a noob, how do I know what stock Rom I have
Well, if you just rooted then you probably have the basic odexed ROM. Most of the themes are for deodexed ROMs.
Please correct me if the theme is for odexed, but I am guessing that is the problem. If you didn't make a nandroid you may have to flash your first custom ROM

nandroid shows up in the boot menu, and i flash the theme. Is there any sites you guys can recommend for themes?
2.3 root
hboot 2.16
How do I find if the ROM type and if it's Odexed?
If you haven't specifically flashed the stock deodexed rom, it's odexed. You'll need to flash the stock deodexed rom to be able to theme. The themes will need to be made specifically for stock, Sense 2.1/3.0, CM7/AOSP and MIUI themes won't work.
If you want more themes, you'll be better off flashing a custom rom. I'm not sure about the availability of Sense themes, but CM7 and MIUI have theming built in. These are both AOSP roms, they're not Sense which is what you're used to. MIUI is my personal favorite, and definitely the most themable.
You can always make a nandroid backup and try out different roms/themes. If you don't like what you flash, just restore your backup or keep flashing until you find something you like.

Thinking about trying a ICS themed ROM.

I want to try flashing a rom with an ICS theme. I'm rooted with CWM5 installed.
Thinking about flashing that ASOP looking ROM then the ICS theme to go with it.
Is there any reason I shouldn't do this? My phone doesn't seem to suffer LOS at all. Can I flash the ROM then flash a stock kernel?
Most of the roms available support most kernels. There are at least 3 custom "stock" kernels available that would be your best bet at avoiding Los. Bubbys stock w/cwm, rogue stock, chris41g's new stock kernel...all would be fine to flash in cwm after you've installed a rom, I would suggest calks rom, or starburst as they are both compatible with ICS theme and are updated regularly

Better yet, just wait on the real ICS port being worked on. I tried the themed launchers and they were ok, but there's nothing like the real thing baby.

Stock ROM Theme

Will any of the Themes in the Theme section work on Stock EL13 ROM that is only rooted?
From my understanding, If you're on an odexed stock rom, you have to flash an odexed theme. Deodexed stock roms will need a deodexed theme. Most of the the roms are updated and based on EL13 now so yes they will work.
Fyi, stock rooted is odexed

Click to collapse
An odexed rom is "themed" when it is built or modded.... you cannot "flash" a theme over an odexed rom. Which is what you stated you have. An deoxeded rom can be themed by flashing a compatible theme over it (the themer usually states in their op which rom its compatible with). If you want to theme your rom you need to flash a deoxeded rom. They are all over our development threads...

Need TouchWiz Stock Rom ICS theme

HI, I have a rooted EL29 version Epic 4g Touch, I like the touchwiz stock rom but wanted ICS theme is there any way to get it without actually putting on a custom rom ?
The ROM has to be deodexed for the theme to work or else it would be bootloop of hell. Might as well flash a custom ROM to avoid problems.

Try posting in the correct section next time http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1300
You could always flash a stock rooted custom ROM, such as this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1429243 or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
Stock EL29 Kernel with CWM to flash the theme http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24014670&postcount=2
Is this what you're looking for, it's for builds EL13-EL29 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1528063

odexed? deodexed?

can anyone explaine what is deodexed rom and odexed rom?
is rooted stock rom odexed rom? if not, does it mean i can use multiscreen apps mod?
going to get my note 2 tmr any help will be appreciate
This gets asked alot..stock rom (rooted or not) is odexed custom roms are deodexed. And multi apps screen mod already comes built in the phone..
what i mean is adding a third party apps for multiscreen
Deodexing is a process done by custom rom developers to make their Roms more customizable. If you're using a stock rom, then it is odexed. If you're using a custom rom, then 99% it is deodexed.
For easier theming.
Like the 15 toggle switches.
Don't think you can fit that in the stock odexed rom.
