Help deciding - HTC Desire vs Nexus One

Hi,
First time posting on the forum but I have been following it for many months now and find it very helpful so thank you.
I am about to make the move from Touch Diamond 2 to either the HTC Desire or the Nexus One but I would like some help from the people on the forum in making the decision
Reasons to buy HTC Desire:
1) cheaper (with contract in France)
2) Sense UI - not mandatory but I am used to it from the Diamond2
3) Prefer buttons and optical trackball (I think but have not touched either device yet)
4) Sense UI allows me to Synch Exchange Calendar which would be important (but I know the N1 can use the Touchdown App)
Reasons to buy Nexus One:
1) Will get Android updates faster
So my big question is should I really be so worried at the speed that HTC will release the new Android updates (I have read that 2.2 might be available as of May 17th - but it is not yet clear what will be included)?
My biggest fear is that I will buy the HTC Desire and it will be stuck on 2.1 for the next year and the Nexus One will keep getting more and more features added. I have been reading about how the HTC Hero users are still waiting to get either 2.0 or 2.1 for months and would not like to be in the same boat if I can avoid it.
I have also been reading how the Desire can now be routed so should I put my faith in the XDA developers to keep the Desire updated even if HTC doesn't do it on their own? I have not tried routing and using the Custom Roms yet (on my Diamond2) but am willing to give it a try if needed on the Desire.
Thanks for anyone who can give me some advise on this purchase.

Get a Desire.......Now that it's rooted you're gonna get updates due to the fantastic work on XDA and modaco. Period. Its a no Brainer man!
Regards
Mo
Thank you, That is how I was feeling but I wanted to be reassured
I guess I will just have to learn how to Root update the Desire with out bricking it. Luckily I have also been learning Linux the past few years as it looks like that is also necessary for the rooting.
Thanks for the feedback

[Q] Some questions Wildfire S & Sense 2.1

Hello everybody.
I have to offer HTC wildfire S nu my little woman, in fact I found is very smartphone
fluid compared to my acer liquid A1.
but I have some questions:
My first: you it is possible to root the Wildfire S? if so how?
My second question: I have a wildfire worries the S is equipped Sense 2.1 when I go
custom skin and then there are two skins that I can apply but when I want to download
other by clicking on "more" that sends me this hub on HTC brand "can not
download the list of skins. "and though I tried again still the same as the rest of htc
hub works. Do you have a solution to this problem?
And my last question: given that the official skin does not work, I found on the XDA
skins for htc Sense 2.1 rom here: I arrive in the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048894
installed but then I see no appication for by not even in the skin of
Custom, proved why?
I know it's been a lot of questions but being new to the world I struggle to htc
I understand the habit of my liquid I cheat regularly.
Thank you in advance for your answers.
Good day.

I am recieving my wildfire s tomorrow, so I will be able to give you better answers tomorrow.
1. There is no root presently available, and unfortuntely with the HTC Sensation coming out soon with high end devices, I expect that they will focus on those phones and not the wildfire S. So I expect it will be months (if ever) before the wildfire s is rooted.
2. That sounds like a software error, maybe explain the error to HTC in an email and they can fix it for the next firmware.
3. Those skins look like they are for the desire hd, this has a bigger resolution than the wildfire s, so this is a reason why they might not work.

Some thoughts...

Hello folks, hope that everything's going great out there with your phones.
I have some thought's about the HTC Wildfire S..
Sadly, it seems that it's not going to get rooted in a while (unless you're a fool to buy the XTC clip), and even if you do that - WHERE ARE THE ROMS?! I can only see just one custom rom on this forum, and it's probably similar to the original, i suppose that's because there aren't even any screenshots of it!
Alpharev X was really a life saver, because they actually managed to overcome the ugly S-ON on the HTC Wildfire. But talk about getting disappointed when they wrote that some things didn't work out on the HTC Wildfire S. I think that someone from Alpharev X wrote;
"you're better off getting the desire S and/or up.
much better devices.
Wildfire S is just old **** in a new package."
WELL - WTF is Wildfire then?!
I actually read that 4 times just to make sure that it actually came from Alpharev x.. Thanks for that guys..
Sadly, i think that our WF S won't be S-OFF in a while, and if it does, people are going to forget it completely and custom roms won't exist for it.
Just read the Wildfire forum, people are launching new roms almost everyday!
Just my thoughts.
(btw don't complain on my English, you wouldn't write as well either if you talked 4 languages as i do)
You're right, Alpha guy with high level of culture and interpersonal skills ( maybe gay as for me...) told me the same on IRC, when I stupidly ask for marvel status ... Screw them.
Personally I'm waiting for HTC unlock, maybe near September we'll know something more ...
ROMs for Buzz are weird as for me, maybe 'cause I'm familliair with Cyanogenmod from previous device I can live without Sense at all.
Cheers

Im thankful that they worked on the Htc Wildfire, but it's REALLY a big shame writing that WF S is some old ****. Maybe i don't wan't to buy a f-ing Desire because it feels like carrying a eee pc in your pocket.
Let's hope that HTC will help us Have a nice day man!

[Q] which phone to follow the desire?

hi all,
just wondering ....
which phone will you be picking up to replace your desire?
the desire has been the ?best? supported android phone during the days of eclair and froyo, then gingerbread (not enough resources to run the phone??? -wrong) and now ICS (i've been running sandvolds ICS beta for a month and it rocks, so smooth but now definately limited by hardware (NFC, no HWA support etc)).
However, times change and no piece of technology can last forever.
Which android phone will take over from the desire in being the next best option? WHich one has the most dev support, which one has the best hardware.
I know thousands of people will be nearing the end of their contract for their Desire. What will you pick up and why?
Well according to this other thread here, there is still no decent replacement for Desire so there.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443810
damn,
you got me.
the desire is the only phone i will use for the rest of my life.
...could be worse i guess

It looks Sony is trying to turn things around with their smartphone lineup this year. But I'm not yet convinced but being a Sony Ericsson fan before I hope they would play it good this time.
I am also thinking my next phone will be the Sony Experia S I have been reading good things about it. Sony also seems to allow the bootloaders to be unlocked with out issue nowadays so hopefully there will be some nice custom ROMs. Just can't decide on the color white or black...

Moving to Q&A
As in terms of rom development.
You could take the Desire HD, with the upcoming announcement of ICS coming to that one and the Desire S.
(I would take the Desire HD, when my Desire is up for replacement)
Also by taking several looks at the rom development section of the DHD.
I think it wouldn't be a bad choice to go with.
As in a completely new phone, with hopefully a good rom development, i would wait for the SGS III

About to upgrade from Desire to One X...

Seeing all the negative posts, am I making the right move? Is the Galaxy S3 really going to be that much better?
Would anyone recommend rooting the One X and using Cyanogen from the start?
I don't think that it will be much better than the One X.I've read enough forums and i saw that the SII had his share of problems when it was launched,so,i don't think that the SIII won't have any problems.
This phone does not have any issues, that stop it from working. I made the same move from desire to one x (my desire was on the verge of self destruct) and love it. I dont think the SIII will be necessarily any better, I have also found htc devices have a great bunch of devs working on them. Therefore those guys can fix most of any software issues

Yeah, most of them are software issues which can be fixed,if not by HTC by the awsome dev's that are here on XDA.
Well, I'm glad I made the switch to the HTC One X. It rules!
