fault - no display, can only see backlight - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ROM: LeeDroid v1.3 i think
Recovery: Clockwork
Over the week I've noticed my screen been playing up abit. The display sometimes went dim (though it was natural due to my auto brightness).
Today, I cannot see my screen at all. Did the obvious troubleshooting steps.
- take out battery, simcard, sdcard,
- insert battery, enter to recovery mode
nothing, I can feel the phone vibrate on bootup, still no display.
Was thinking sending it away for warranty, but the phone has been rooted.
Will this cause any issues?

I suppose it will cause issues. Except if they swap it instantly in service.
The only thing you can do is to run a 1, 32 ruu and than if it does not fix going blindly and try to revert ENG s-off if you had.

I was haa similar issue. The lockscreen would show for like 2 seconds after boot but then the screen would go black and the backlight would still be on It was like my phone had frozen with the screen off. I flashed the rom again but without wiping so i could backup everything then done a full wipe.

Can't get into recovery because screen has no display.
Phone as good as a paperweight, not even a torch
Will have to send away for warranty replacement

To be honest, I was reading the Limited Warranty pamphlet that was in the phone's box last night.
It explicitly states that ONLY hardware components is covered by the limited warranty and specifically excluded software and accessories from the limited warranty. (Sorry, dont have the exact wording now, but it is noted in point 4)
So if there is no warranty on software, how can modifying the software that does not alter the function of the hardware void your warranty?
I am no lawyer, but this sounds pretty straight forward to me.
I highly doubt it will hold up in court, if tested.
If they do contest it. Tell them to put on the default stock ROM and see if the problem still persist.

[Q] DHD Display flickering; How to repair?

Hello Forum,
seems that my DHD has an irreparable error.
But i've still a little hope that maybe someone of you guys out there can point me into the right direction to repair the phone again.
What happened:
on December, 20. for no apparent reason the Display started flickering approximately 2 cm from the top.
The upper Part (the first 2 cm from the top of Display) was showing the normal Picture, on the lower Part the Picture was flickering at irregular time intervals, but the touch gestures were still working without any Problems.
Setup at that Time:
- Latest 4ext Touch Recovery
- Latest MIUI.us Rom by bliind
- Custom DPI set to '190' (with ROM Toolbox)
- Max CPU Speed set to 1200 Mhz (with Set CPU)
(Had this setup working fine without any issues for approx. last 2 Months...)
Last change i did before the error occured: Set Custom Boot Animation with Rom Toolbox
The Flickering started not immediatly after setting the new boot Animation but i think 2 days and some reboots later...
Actions that i've already tried to solve the Problem:
1. Shut down the Phone, pull out the Battery, wait some Minutes, reboot the phone.
-> The flickering was gone and the Display looked normal after reboot.
2. After some time I took the Phone out of my pocket and the flickering was there again like before.
Tried to set DPI back to original value '240'
reboot the Phone
-> The Flickering still was there and it seemed to me that the responsiveness of the touch was slightly slower than normal.
3. Reboot into Recovery
Nandroid Backup all Partitions to SD-Card
wipe all partitions except SD-Card
new, totally clean flash of latest MIUI.us Rom by bliind
Reboot the phone
-> The flickering was gone; responsiveness of the screen normal as it was always before.
4. restore all apps; put the phone on the charger over night. everything worked fine again.
on the next Morning this strange flickering was there again; the Touchscreen was very slow responsive in the flickering area
Managed once more to reboot into recovery, but the flickering was now even in the Recovery and on the boot screen.
-> The Touch got more and more unresponsive.
Could no more start a new ROM flash out of Recovery.
5. Tried to access the phone via aahk tool and restored last stock ROM
-> After Reboot the DHD vibrates (like it usually does for startup)
the screen shows a bunch of black and white Stripes that chnge their Color when the Boot Animation should show up,
and later again when the lockscreen should appear.
It makes the boot jingle and i can send Commands via adb.
but Touch commands doesnt work, (tried to put in the Pin blind, but it shows no reaction)
Stupid, but I can't change it: my Warranty and the extra Insurance that i purchased for the DHD ended just 2 weeks before on 6. December.
6. Disassembled the whole phone with Help of you tube disassembling Guide, carefully cleaned all contacts and assembled it again.
-> nothing changed; same behavior like before disassembling.
What can I do? Any ideas except of small rasping and stirring into the soup? :crying:
Can it be only the display? Maybe the Graphic Chip?
Any other ideas?
thank you for reading this all and i appreciate any suggestion that might give my DHD a new spirit of life
Greetings from Cologne
I know it's not what you want to hear, but that sounds like a graphics or display hardware problem...

Thanks for your reply!
That was the same what I thougt after disassembling and cleaning with no result.
Cause it seems to me that the Display is still working, but the Signal that's coming in is broken.
I alsready supposed that the Graphic engine is broken.
Just had a little Hope that someone might had the same Problem and got it solved,
before I start practice for mobile phone throwing competition...
i suggest another ROM JB used to cause my DHD flickering (earliear versions)
My DHD was with same problem 1 year a go, and that usually happen when i played games like Angrybirds or Asphalt, or when the device temperature was high.
I was worry at that time, thinking that the device was gone.
Take the same solutions that you had (except disassemble the phone) but they're only temporary.
By that time i decide root the device and install a new rom, (nothing to loose had i think) and Revolution HD was my choice.
After that my DHD didn't flick any more.
I didn't ever know what was the origin of that flickering but for me, that was the big solution.
I'm using Viper Venom 1.2.3 for now, and still with no flickering insues.
So, my advice for you is... give a try to other rom's and kernels, maybe you resolve your insue has i did.
Good luck with that.

Thanks for you Answers guys,
the Problem i have is, that my DHD does show only sripes even if I try to boot into Recovery, I can't see anything and am not able to start a flash process...
cause i have installed 4ext touch recovery i need the screen to wipe and flash a new ROM.
But i will try to flash an CWM - Recovery through ADB and then to start the flash Process blind by tapping the buttons...
let's see what will happen. There's nothing to loose...
For now, cause I was sitting without a mobile phone at all, I've ordered a cheep one from Amazon... - Huawei U8510 (Ideos X3) -
And oh WONDER!!!: I've got a fully functioning phone with CyanogenMod 7.2 and all the stuff i use my phone for is working without any Probs..
And the whole thing has 2 years of warranty at a cost of € 80,-
only the Display for my HTC would cost € 40,-
so I'm thinking of selling the broken phone on ebay and let anyone try to repair it who is able to....
but I will give it a try to flash another ROM.
Already downloaded the JellyTime R30...
Hello unbeteiligter,
seems that my DHD has nearly the same issues, but with some extra problems.
It seems to be broken since today morning. I wiped the phone and restored the backup I made the afternoon before, and then the first vertical stripes occured. I wiped it and flashed the same rom (CodefireX 4.2.1) again. Same issues. Now I tryed to flash a GingerBread Strock Rom. Even the same issues, and even more shocking is that this problem also occurs in the bootloader, recovery, splashscreen and bootanimation.
Stupid situation, today my Warranty ended.
What can I do? Previously I tougth this is a software problem, but now I think it might be a hardware issue.
Thanks in advance!

The T-Mobile Customer Support told me, that they would have accepted the case as Warranty, if my DHD had ended up during the first week after End of Warranty. Don't know where you bought yours, but maybe there's a small chance for you to get Warranty Support through their obligingness.
If I were you I would try this...

If your dealer don't accept your Warranty Call, I can't give you much Hope... Sorry for you...
... would imagine you should look for a new phone...
That's what I did....
Similar problem
I have also got a similar problem. Had my phone for two years and have also just hit the same problem. Flashed a new ROM, everything was working fine, then all of a sudden top half of the screen is displayed correctly, the bottom half is always flickering. This occurs in the bootloader as well. Anyone would think that HTC decided to make sure the phone only works for two years and a few weeks after the warranty expires to make sure it experiences problems.

Galaxy Nexus freeze after unlock **UNROOTED** troubleshooting

Alright, so here is what's going on.
I had my alarm go off earlier today, got up, unplugged my phone like normal. I swiped off the notifications I didn't care about like a tapatalk message etc. I noticed that Google Current's automatically updated. I'm sure that's no huge deal.
I locked the screen and went about my day. I tried to swipe to unlock, and the phone freezes and reboots. The phone is responsive until you unlock it, then it just freezes and reboots.
Tried safe mode once, and it worked fine. I then turned it off, and tried normally booting again, same freezing and rebooting. So I went to go back to safe mode, and now safe mode is doing the same thing, which means that a factory reset is now out of the question.
What the hell man.
Specs:
- Samsung Galaxy Nexus
- All stock apps except added Facebook and Tapatalk
- Jellybean 4.2.2 software I believe. I'd double check if I could.
- Still locked and unrooted
Any ideas on where to go from here? No warranty, so any ideas would help
It turns on, goes to lock screen. Then freezes when I try to get anywhere from that lock screen. Even on safe mode.
Then it will reboot automatically after about 30 seconds.
I should note I received a text in this time, and thought maybe just pulling the notification bar down and going straight to the text would work. The notification bar works, but when I hit the text, it froze the same way.
This must be some sort of self check or some Android process crashing. But I can't utilize safe mode to fix it.
Any ideas on what to do? I know there are threads with this problem, but this involves an unrooted phone, of which I have seen no threads, or threads with answers. I am not experienced with getting too far into Android, so just a direction to go, or something to try when I get home would be awesome. (At work currently)
The only options I have right now are the options upon booting with the volume down, which are Start - Restart bootloader - Recovery Mode and Turn off. In this screen, here is my info:
FASTBOOT MODE
PRODUCT NAME - tuna
VARIANT - maguro 16GB
HW VERSION - 9
BOOTLOADER VERSION - PRIMELA03
BASEBAND VERSION I9250UGLL1
CARRIER INFO - NONE
SERIAL NUMBER - xxxxxxx
SIGNING - production
LOCK STATE - LOCKED
In recovery mode, I see a dead android guy with a red triangle and an exclamation mark in it.
I realize you guys probably get a lot of dumb questions so I tried unloading all the information I could. My replies will be 5 minutes apart, as I'm new and I see that's a restriction on being here.
Thanks in advance
You can try unlock the bootloader (it'll erase your data so be careful) and then try flashing the oficial google image via fastboot and see if it solves it.
EDIT: in that screen of red triangle press up and power at the same time to show the options. There you can do a factory reset to see if it solves it. No need to unlock the bootloader that way.

Got it. It works now, but curious, is this a common occurrance? I have no idea what caused it, which worries me. But it seems to be working fine.
Wasn't worried about data loss, I haven't had the phone for too long yet. I plan on just installing the minimum apps. The point of me not unlocking it was to avoid issues, but I had more luck with unlocking it than leaving it locked.
That said, I wasn't aware you had to hold the vol up and power button to get to the options from the dead Android screen. That was an oversight on my part when I was looking up for data.
Words cannot explain how thankful I am, so thank you

No problem everything should work as intended now. What happened was a bit strange indeed. It it happens again with everything in stock then there is a possibility that it is faulty hardware and you should replace it. Maybe it was some configuration bug and nothing extreme

Fauly hardware can cause this issue? I baby this phone, has yet to be dropped (let's admit, it's inevitable), the only thing it's seen is three drops of water that fell off my sunroof onto it. I immediately grabbed my phone and wiped it off, but it was all on the screen, not in the speaker or anything.
Either way, I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks again

No problem

[Q] Screen Distortion

I rooted my phone, deleted some important system apps and it became stuck and showed only "SAMSUNG". Later i flashed with Odin and the screen became distorted, although when touching the screen I can hear the water drop sounds indicating the system is functioning. I never dropped or immersed it in water, so obviously there's problem with the system. I took to service last week and they told me that they are sending it back to the factory (I didn't ask where) to fix it, but is it true that they will just replace the screen instead of fixing the system? My friend said format the phone will bring it back to life, is it true? Some say that flashing it will unroot it, is that true?

maybe factory reset will make it all right and yes if you flash again any stock version firmware { other than custom rom or cm } the phone will loose root functionality
also these screen issues are mostly not solved by reset method
mainly such problem persists due to hardware damage

Screen Glitch/Flickering - Software or Hardware Issue?

I've been having this problem since the other day. The day before that, the phone's just working perfectly fine, tho, when I woke up in the morning, the phone just suddenly got this screen glitch. It only seems to be having a glitch in dark backgrounds... But given some time, the glitch disappears, but then again, if I turn off the display and leave it some time, the problem reappears.
Please look at the vid.
I don't think it's a hardware problem since the splash image isn't affected and the glitch seems temporary, but changing ROMs doesn't help. I haven't tried the stock firmware tho. Gonna download the stock fw and try it and see if the problem still persist.
Hi,
It's a hardware issue.
It's not related to any ROM you're using.
I've same problem as you and I decided to return it to stock and sent it to the nearest Asus Service Center (in Makassar) via my local seller because there is no one here in my location.
Sent from my GT-I9500
its not hardware issue if that not happen when you use screen recorder.
give a try then...
@baonxxx
This isn't related to software. I had this screen glitch even on stock (applies to everything: Splashscreen, etc) and caused difficulties on normal usage.
By general you can trigger this screen glitch by let the phone heating for a period of time, like let the phone idle for hours, charging, or let the screen on around the time. *only on affected devices*
You may need to read OP once again.

as u can see in the video , it doesn't really affect the splash screen, tho if flashing back to the original fw doesn't help, then I may need to get it to Asus Service Center for them to check.

hhmm, not really everything, only glitches on dark backgrounds... seems like the screen on my phone's having a problem on dark backgrounds.
it is definitely a HW issue. did your phone ever fell on the ground?
this usually happens when there is loose connection between the mainboard and the display.
if you haven't void the warranty, send it for repairs, otherwise open the phone and fix it yourself (just detach and properly reattach the display connector, and make sure it's grounded properly).
@pecholino
Only unlocking the bootloader with official method provided by Asus could void the warranty.

damn it's a HW issue and it's getting annoying... gonna send it back for repairs... damn I didn't even dropped the phone once, so much for ASUS.
It happens with me too. On stock firmware. But is very rare and temporary. Turning off the screen and then again waking up solves it.

it happens to me on stock as well. Same as yours turning off the screen and waking it up makes it normal. so it's not a firmware problem? or is it?

I don't think this is a hardware problem as so many people are having this problem.
This problem happened to me the next morning after I updated to 2.20.40.168 I didn't drop me phone in between the time I updated and the time I first seen it happen. I've already sent my phone in and Asus replaced my motherboard. I got it back and problem was still happening.
The problem may go away for you if you set Developer Options, Disable HW Overlays but the setting does not seem to persist after a reboot.
quick settings
I noticed another remarkable phenomenon. When I open the quick settings, the defect is gone. But I only can operate in the quick settings, nothing else.
The screen freezes until I open the quick settings. -
I have reinstalled all software, even the boot partition. The defect already occurs in the splashscreen and fastbootscreen. -
I have opened the plug connection to the screen and connected again. -
So far everything in vain. -
ASUS claims, it is a defect on the motherboard. - I am afraid they are right.
It is a hardware issue. The problem is with the screen, precisely, the multiplexer on the screen. But since it is a part of the LCD itself, you will have to get the entire display module replaced.
Replacement displays are available on eBay/Amazon and you can get instruction guides on YouTube.
If your phone type z00AD Try downgrade your rom only to 2.12.40.11.. its solved my problem..

Screen issues

Hey guys, I would appreciate your help.
I suddenly started having a weird issue with my device (EU unlocked), where almost half of the lower screen has some sort of "shadow" and it flickers when it draws something new i.e opening an app.
For some reason it also carries to bootloader, recovery, and boot animations.
Direct screenshots don't show the issue on the picture.
Edit:
Just to clarify - I never dropped my phone, it never got wet and I always charge it with the original brick and cable. I was watching live TV when the issue suddenly appeared.
I will try to take a picture of the issue.
Edit 2: Took a picture after a system wipe booting up.
Edit 3: Took additional pictures.
Looks like a definite hardware failure to me... Only option would be to send in for repair.
If it was software, the problem would be displayed in the screenshots too.
Sent from my HTC 10 using XDA-Developers mobile app
This is so weird... it just happened all of a sudden
I hope warranty will cover it even though I unlocked the bootloader and installed a custom rom
Definitely your backlight. Did you buy from Carrier or HTC? If it's the unlocked version from HTC then you don't need to worry about the unlocked status. If it's a carrier version, you may want to restore your stock backup to try to avoid them giving you any **** about it.
