[Q] CM7 (TB) Wont restore data after build 17? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello All,
Background info:
Cyanogenmod 7 , Nightly #17, 1/27/11 is what I currently have
Most Updated Titanium Backup
Tried this on Build #18 and #20.
Basically after I install the 18 or 20 I get no errors. I then go to Titanium Back up and restore my apps. (Only apps , no system data )
Is anyone else having this issue or is this all on my end and if so i'll be investigating further.
THanks!
Kyle
EDIT: I Have forgot to mention that yes I did do a Back Up before i installed it. I have done this everyday but until 18 and 20 this is arose >.<

Well I'm not sure if you did, because you didn't specify, but did back up the data as well? Because there is a backup all apps and a backup all apps with data option, the second is about 6 boxes down from the first option. That seems to be the problem. I hope this helps any...

Well I'm saying on the titanium backup, make sure to check the 4th option to back system data and apps. You can always check you SD card to make sure its there. I do the same and able to keep my data, also when you flash a build you don't have to wipe the data and cache, because it just updates since its technically an update.

And when you restore, you run the backup and restore all apps and data? And what data is missing, like the adw launcher settings, ect?

among other things like my twitter login and facebook and my vlc ****, though my ADW ex is still there which seems odd

i also cant open my market :/

additionally i get a error saying Google talk authentication failed...
Swype wont restore itself anymore, some apps like FB did restore the data this time, VLC did not, twitter didnt, my market is borked.
Not complaining, just seeing if anyone else has had issues?

Well wow, I don't know what to say. I would say try to re-flash your google gaps, and flash the newest set. I had some issues with older versions. I will keep trying to look into it.
link to google apps: http://www.mediafire.com/?qgt15ftd3gdby6v

yup i flashed what was in the clockwork mod file just now, 1/15/11, ill use this set to see what happens. It seems like my phone isnt linking to google since my icons are grayed out instead of color in the notifications bar

Yea, it doesn't seem like it is linking. But let me know what happens.

kk, installing now, ill let you know ^_^

no good, "Google Talk Authentication failed" App market closes on opening, my power widgets i notcied reset to stock CM7
This is all bad but i CANT complain
ima revert back to my old build i think for #17 i did a back up of it just in case 20 didnt work

That really sucks man. I know it isn't the google apps because I'm using the same package. The last thing I can think of [that worked for me] is try to go back to build 20, use titanium backup to restore your apps, JUST the apps, no data, restore. It should work. Then backup all your apps and data and backup your rom.

[Q] Apps not syncing after flashing CM 6.1

Ok so I flashed CM 6.1 and none of my apps came back down. I tried unchecking and re-checking the app-sync check button in settings and nothing came down. So I wiped, and loaded the stock ROM - and it doesn't sync them down either. Did checking the box that says "Back your data up" after setting up CM 6.1 do this? Also, I can't restore my nandroid backup from Clockwork Recovery. It brings me back to the setup app every time.
Looks like you might have a faulty back-up if you can't use it. I suggest removing that one and making a new one. Also, this is where you make the mental note of using Titanium Backup to back-up your apps, should this exact issue of your apps not showing up come back.
So see if you can do another nandroid backup that'll work, go through the pain-staking process of getting all your apps again, then fetch Titanium Backup and back them all up. I haven't had the issue of my apps not being installed after CM 6.1 was applied. I was actually surprised that they were being re-installed for me!
i flashed to CM 6.1 and not even a quarter of my apps appeared in the market.
anybody else have this prob and is there a fix?

I did all that beforehand, and it didn't restore anything (Titanium) my Nandroid backup from CW Recovery was probably bad. I tried to restore an older one after flashing back - and the md5 sum was invalid.
I have noticed that when I used to flash the 2.2 CM roms on my G1, it would only restore apps when you flashed another CM Rom. As though it starts collecting data after initial installation. There is a small checkbox that says "Backup data with Google" I think when this is checked it looks at your CURRENT apps which would be default because you just flashed.
I got everything back, it's all good. But it was just a small pain in my ass lol.

What did you do to get your apps back? I am running into the same problem...
I just had to re-download em they sync now, cause I'm on CM 6.1 from CM whatever it was. I had this problem on my G1. Now I just do a titanium backup and be done with it.

Aye yeah, I just went to Androlib.com and got the QR codes so I could do it fast. Once I got them loaded, they sync'd when I flashed the next CM.

Aye, its my favorite. After the first one went down for whatever reason, AndroLib has been my savior in some cases. That and I'm lazy. Just pull up Barcode Scanner and scan away. I'm using titanium backup now to backup all my stuff...

Is there anyway to automate the installation and setup of apps

when say going from stock 2.2 to cm 6.1.1? What id like is to say, take a list of my currently installed apps on the froyo, or from a backup, and make a list of them to be installed, with the accounts and what not set up. or, mount a backup so i can look at the apps i have installed and their passwords.

You can use titanium to install apps from other android versions? Because with the backup that comes with cwm, i tried restoring just the data after going to cm 6.1.1 and i got a weird little half brick device until i manually booted into recovery and reinstalled the rooted stock back up i made. now i wanna go back to cm 6.1.1 but i dont feel like writing a bunch of stuff down.

Works for me when I say restore back a 6.1.1 after running some 2.3. Usually I'm restoring (apps + data) stuff like setCPU_donate and other 3rd party apps and settings. Couldn't hurt but I'll tell you, messing with restoring anything other than a full rom backup in CWM makes me a bit nervous. Luckily there are alot of things to do what you're asking.
Yeah it made me nervous too after i did it. I didnt figure that user data itself would cause a perma brick though. But i was almost completely sure it wouldnt work at the time. And now i am completely sure. Yeah i downloaded titanium back up, and i backed up the apps i wanted to save the account info for, so we'll see what happens after cm gets done doin its thing.
Yes, Titanium Backup will backup not only the app, but also the user data as well - which is *way* handy.
It'll also backup system apps, so you do need to kinda watch what you're restoring (the free version of Titanium Backup makes you manually confirm every single app you restore, so it's a bit harder to screw up). It's a pretty sweet app, highly recommended.
Installing/restoring between versions is no problem.
yeah, it is pretty handy. Except when it came to swype.
Quick Q for Titanium. When I do a batch operation, it still asks me if I want to install the apk and then another if i want to open it or hit done. Is there a way to bypass those screens?

Only if you buy the Pro version or whatever. It's not too expensive. I actually kinda like those screens, as it gives me a double-check so I don't install something I didn't want to.

Step by step to flash CM7 from stock without losing data

I did a lot of reading before I did this to be sure I wouldn't lose anything. Here's the step by step for others, since I was unable to find it all in one place. This is for the MT4G/Glacier, no idea if the process is similar on other phones. You should probably still read, but I couldn't find any of this all in one place:
If you flash, here's what you need:
- Rooted phone (if you need to root, search for the gfree method, it's the easiest)
- ROM Manager from the Market. Get the premium version.
- TitaniumBackup from the Market.
- Sync turned on for your contacts and calendars in your google account.
1. Go into TitaniumBackup, set the option to store the settings on the SDCard. Go into Backup/Restore, hit menu, and run the batch to do a full backup of system and user apps/data.
2. Go into ROM Manager. At the top, click the option to install ClockworkRecovery. Make sure it installs version 3.0.0.5. Then click the option to reboot into recovery mode. In recovery, make a ROM backup of your existing ROM. It will store on the SD card. Reboot back into the OS.
3. Go back into ROM Manager, scroll down to Download ROM's. You should see CM7 Nightlies in there. Download the latest build. It will ask you if you want to also download the GAPPS package, grab that also. When it's done, it will ask you what you want to do... just cancel. Go to reboot in recovery mode.
4. In recovery:
- Wipe/Factory Reset
- Clear cache partition
- Advanced -> clear Dalvik cache
- On main screen, install ZIP from SD
- Navigate to sdcard->clockworkmod->downloads->teamdouche and select the CM7 zip for your phone that was downloaded
- When that is done, install another zip from sd, go into the goo.inside.me directory and install GAPPS zip
- Reboot phone from main menu
5. Enter your gmail creds that you used for your primary account from before
6. Cancel the additional downloads thing when it pops up, this will pop up again later after you enable wireless
7. Go into ROM Manager, Select the Fix Permissions option, reboot (wifi won't work unless you do this)
8. Enable wifi and join to your network
9. Eventually you will get the popup again. Select the stuff that you want installed.
It will pull down all of your apps from the market and install them. If you want to restore user data for the apps, you can go into titanium and click on the app, and restore it with the data. Don't do this until it's done updating from the market. Do NOT restore system level stuff. You will cause problems if you restore system level stuff from 2.2 or earlier on 2.3.x.
You should also install SetCPU from the market, set to start on boot, set conservative mode, and create a screen off profile that limits to 368mhz/conservative. In advanced, leave the defaults, except change the cpu up threshold to 75, and the scaling percent to 11 or 12. Massive battery improvements. You can overclock with this also, mine is only overclocked to around 1100mhz. Some people are running 1800mhz. I heard smartass mode instead of conservative is also good, but haven't tried it.
Keep in mind that if you have an HTC phone with the Sense Framework, you won't have that anymore. So if you liked the Sense dialer (which I did), you can't get it. The stock dialer is functional, but not the best. DialerOne and Dialer2 look the most interesting, but they still aren't as good. If you have CSipSimple installed, remove it. CM7 has SIP built into it, and CSipSimple confuses the phone when trying to make calls. If you liked the Sense clock widget, you can get a replacement, search for Beautiful Widgets on the market. The built in camera app is not Sense either, but does all the same things. The Gallery is awesome, best gallery I've ever seen (stacks that you can pull apart and flip through, very cool).
If GPS doesn't work, download GPS Status from the market and use it to clear the A-GPS data and cache. It's the only app that can do it. It's free.
Also, if you want to go back to your previous ROM, you can flash back with the ROM Manager backup that you made. The only thing is, you'll have to downgrade the clockwork recovery bootloader to 2.5.1.2 first. You can do this by flashing a zip from your SD card. The zip is available somewhere on these forums. I don't have a link, but you can find it by searching a bit. The 3.0.0.5 version cannot flash a Froyo or earlier ROM for some reason. I'm not going back, so I haven't done this.
My TitaniumBackup realized somehow that I installed fresh, and it automatically restored my apps and data. It did NOT on my friend's phone. But, he has the free version and I have the paid one. If it doesn't restore your app settings, you can manually go in and do it. One thing that I've never been able to restore is Good corporate email. It restores, but it won't send or receive. If anyone has ideas on this, post them.
Note that I flashed with build 35, and it's been rock solid. Your mileage may vary. If you already have the software noted above, the whole process only takes about 5-10 mins.
Edit: Recovery 3.0.0.6 was released, and works with 2.2 and 2.3. So you wouldn't have to downgrade the recovery to go back a version. As of this edit, you can grab it here if it's not showing up in ROM Manager yet: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952433
Something to add... if you are using ADW or LPP do a backup if those also. I find that if you install it fresh from the market and not TB then press restore settings in their preferences it will load all the custom icons and custom dock. It saves alot of time. Nice writup for the peeps that need the pointers for a fresh and fast install of a nightly
FYI, Titanium backup works great at restoring apps. I would be weary of restoring data between android versions however, because some of the data will be of a different type and could cause lots of issues. Thats the reason for the full data wipe before flashing in the first place.

I thought that was mostly because of system. The apps themselves still store their data in sqlite databases, and their schema should not change between versions of the actual OS. I might be wrong.
app data is fine, system data is what causes issues. I should have been more specific.

The only system stuff I install is the accounts back up, email data, wifi access points, and account and sync settings. I usually dont have a problem installing this kind of stuff. I had a few problems in the past restoring some system stuff and it made things not work, a lot of force closes. etc.. I would open up say the sound settings in settings and it would never open it would fc 100% of the time. You know I bet a lot of the issues people have with stuff not working when other's have no problems are due to bad restores. I have not once in any of the builds(since 26 when I started flashing CM 7) had an issue with wifi or gps(knock on wood)

But the market automatically downloads all your apps for you. last time i did a full wipe i only used TB to restore data only, since the apps had been installed automatically from market.
You can use My Backup Pro to back up your SMS and MMS, plus bookmarks and a few other things. Very useful if you want to wipe and save your text.

Ok so I just barely rooted and flashed cm7 #40 to my glacier. Everthing is great. I love the rom. I just need help on 2 things. First, how do I get my contacts to sync back to my phone? I had done a factory reset twice before and they always synced back after I logged in my gmail account but not this time. I did sync my gmail before rooting and flashing and I also backed everything up with titanium backup but nothing. Second, when I first flashed the cm7 #40 rom I liked how when I locked the screen it shut off like if you were turning off a tv. I don't know what I did that it does not do it anymore. If anyone knows hows to fix my 2 problems I greatly appriciate it. Thanx.
EDIT: I figured out how to get the screen off animation back but I still have problems getting my contacts to push back to my phone. If anyone knows how to get them to sync it would be helpful.
EDIT#2: Figured out how to get contacts back. Was not able to sync them but just went to the tmo website, wrote them down and re-added them to my phone.

I'm curious if there's a way to batch-restore data only in Titanium Backup? Only way I can see is to do it app by app.
Likewise, any way to batch-backup data only?

How do you get Google Backup to Restore Apps (on gingerbread)

My understanding is that GingerBread (2.3.x) will handle automatically restoring your apps after a wipe or you switch between ROM (each with clean wipe).
It asks about "backing up google".
I'm currently using MikG 0.5 and was using MikG RC1 for quite a while (since it was released 3 weeks?).
I was hoping starting with a fresh wipe it would restore my apps but it does not.
I think on one of these gingerbread ROMs (I've tried a bunch) I think it did partially restore apps. Not just paid ones. I forget if it was complete or not.
Is there something explicit you have to do to make this all work?

Because I don't like it. Recently I wanted to use it for a piece of software for TTS I bought and was no longer available in the Market. And it completely fell on it's face. All I did was copy the APK from system from a restored back up and it installed fine.
I also don't want to restore potentially incompatible apps. I assume Google will trigger Market to install latest right from the start.
I also don't have to explicitly choose what to back up and what to restore.
I've seen the Google Stuff work, and it works well when it works.

That's the problem. Honestly, TB can be complicated to use but what you're describing sounds like user error. You also don't have to explicitly choose what to backup and restore in TB either. Just go into Menu > Batch > Backup all user apps to backup and then Restore all user apps when you want to restore. Then just use the Market to update any out of date apps. It takes forever for the Market to get your apps back anyway, I always use TB and so does almost anyone else on a custom ROM.
Call me a purist, but I don't like Titanium Backup either. Granted, I don't use a ton of market apps, only about a dozen or so ... just not a problem. To get back to the original question, Google has always restored my apps on CM6/7, up to and including the 3-7 gapps. The newer gapps used with Android 2.3.4 are where everything began to break down.

I don't want to back it up like that. I think it causes problems.
I backed up this app explicitly, went to restore explicitly and it didn't work. Pretty Simple.
I'd like the google feature. I want something that coordinates with the mark app and installs the instead if the backup is old.

Good luck

Titanium Backup keeps crashing, am i alone?

Woke up today just to see that Titanium Backup had crashed during the scheduled backup tonight. Since then i haven't been able to do anything with it!
Sometimes it crashes right off the start, sometimes i can start a backup and have it crash about ~12-14% in. I tried going in to the settings and checking the "AUTO, indirect" setting that they recommend if you're having problems, but that didn't help either. (And it took me 3 tries to get in to the settings without it crashing!)
I've tried wiping all the app data, re-installing it, installing an older version (that they suggest on their website if having issues). I also tried re-setting the super user permissions for it. None of which helps!
I haven't found any information on it yet, so i assume i'm alone with this? Have anyone else been having the same issue?
Just emailed the support, but i imagine it will take at least a week for them to reply (if they do).
So, any suggestions?
EDIT: I just timed it and it appears to crash after approx 30 seconds, no matter what i do in the application. I Hope the developers sees this.
DOUBLE EDIT: It appears to be working again after updating to v4.9.0.1.
I don't do scheduled backups but the app hasn't failed me yet doing it manually.
well id suggest connecting to your pc and backup the titaniumbackup folder (that way you know all your backups are safe)
then making a nandroid backup
then flashing another ROM or just wiping and reflashing the same ROM you're using

The backups i have stored are outdated now, i've changed a lot since the last update. The plan all along was to do a titanium backup, sync it to dropbox, flash this rom, and then restore all my apps etc. So i'm really kind of out of options now, unless i download everything manually and set everything up again. Doesn't sound very fun tbh. I might just try to find an alternative to titanium, but i'd really like to get it working again. Nothing seems to help.
You are not alone!
Hi, just to say you are not alone. Your case 99% similar to mine.
Just encountered this freeze after the app update on 18/19 Mar and the app will freeze even when I do nothing in the app. And yes, what a coincidence, the app when backup under schedule has stopped (with screen save off) at 14% completion.
Tried the method of deleting the app data and reinstall the app and even worse, now the app stops right when launching after a moment of black screen.
Already filed email and log file to support hopefully there will be an answer...
Hi, I'm also having exactly the same problem with TBU. Am on the pro version.
This has been a problem for about a week now. Not sure if it doesn't play nicely with CM9 or the kernel i'm running. What are you guys running? I may re-flash stock ICS and see if it still gives me problems. Quick question, does reflashing stock ICS remove root? I read somewhere it does and just want to get some different opinons.
Am running a CM9 nightly with Franco Kernal on GMS Galaxy Nexus.

I am also on pro version. Mine is at stock 4.0.2.
And yes, if you re-flash stock you lose root and have to re-root.
I am very very suspecting the crash is something related to the license checking of pro-key so that will explain why the program will crash in 20-30 sec without any special action doing or launching in the app. Just my guess... Hope the support will answer back shortly...
Thanks for the help, have uninstalled for now, will you post if the dev gets back to you?
Interesting that it's happening across a range of different setups.
Anybody hove a solution yet?

Oh my god! It works!!!!! I love you @andQlimax!
To all: Yes, the problem solved after I clear the cache and data of the play store. Beware that I also cleared out data of titanium backup before that when tackling the problem, but you may not need to...
IT WORKS!!!!!!!
Thanks, been without backups since play came. I had tried to clear Google Play Store cache but not data and that fixed it.

Thank you very much, guys!
After a few days of desperate waiting for an update of TB, you made my day. Clearing caches and data of Titanium and Google Play solved the problem.
