Lwps don't work well with adw. - G2 and Desire Z Themes and Apps

Why do lwps make adw so choppy? Its so annoying that I'm kind of forced to use a normal wallpaper unless I want choppyness. The stock launcher, 2.3 launcher, and touchwiz work perfectly fine with them. Is there some option or something to make it work better?

Why can't ADW just work well? I use stock. Try contacting Anderweb and convince him to stop wasting his time.

haha, amen.
ADW has never worked for me on any devices I've owned that used it. I do like that you can get pretty deep into the settings, but unfortunately, none of those settings seem to be able to remedy the choppiness and general lag (at least for me). the only setting that ever made a noticable difference for me was disabling the wallpaper hack (or enabling? whatever the opposite of what it is by default is). I am not on the development side of things, but I feel like with these launchers, the more feature-packed they are, the more buggy they are.
launcher pro was so much smoother for me, but it force closed, again on multiple devices, every time the phone booted.. and I don't like that.
I finally went to virtuous and am giving it a shot with its stock launcher... no issues thus far. of course going to a sense rom isn't really a solution to your problem. I'm getting used to it but I do miss CM.

Don't get me wrong, adw is VERY smooth (adw ex at least) but lwps just slow the bujeezus outta that thing. I don't really use them often but I mean really. Stock has no lag or choppyness, neither 2.3, neither touchwiz, neither sense. It seems that all launchers that come with the phone work fine with live wallpapers but not market ones. I tried launcherpro, adw, adw ex, and go and they were all pretty incompatible with live wallpapers.

Interesting... You are on a G2 or Desire Z I suppose?
I am, and I found all launchers to be smooth up to very smooth on my device, with the 'Grass' live wallpaper set. I am running the latest nightlies of CM7.
Of the different launchers, GO Launcher was 'worst' in app list scrolling and Launcher Pro's shortcut bar just doesnt appeal to me. Zeam is very cool as well, but doesnt offer widget resizeability. So for the time being I'm stuck with ADW, which is very very smooth both in homescreen swiping as well as (vertical) app list scroll orgies.
Where does your setup differ from mine? Do you have a lot of background tasks (FB, Twitter, ...) or a taskkiller or similar at work?
...I almost forget: or a lot of widgets? Animated content? Semi transparent widgets or the likes...?

I have fully transparent widgets to fit my theme and I am using the paginated app drawer. When I scroll in the paginated drawer, it is very choppy. Also scrolling on the desktop is choppier than usual and the app drawer animation is EXTREMELY choppy. I am using adw ex.

What launcher should I pick?

Hi I've now tried 4 different launchers and I can't make up my mind.
What launcher is generally the best, keeping up the speeds etc?
I just can't make up my mind. Any good suggestions?
I use LauncherPro on mine and really like it
Don't know about what is the "best launcher", whatever you like/feel most comfortable with.
I use Launcher Pro myself with Desktop Visualizer to theme my phone.
Have been a big LauncherPro fan but have recently been using ADW EX ..... its very quick and very pretty (great animations etc)
Try them all and see what you like

What 4 launchers did you try? So far i only used Launcher Pro & i'm happy with it.
Top 3 for me. ADW EX, GO, LauncherProPlus.
as a launcher i find the newest adw very smooth.but as i love the launcherpro plus's widgets,i choose it
I'm using launcherpro free version and it has everything I need as home app.

I just love the ADW EX version with all it's animations and smoothness. The developers that combines these things with LP+ widgets gets my vote. Now I just switch between them depending on mood.
Zeam was an excellent launcher on my low-end Pulse, it ought to make the Defy grow wings, but it's not that customizable.

I use zeam. Have used a few and this one does what i want it to do.
Just try a few different ones.
After reading the fora, I went with what seemed like the majority consensus, and on the third day of owing my Defy (my first Android phone), I bought LauncherProPlus. That was couple of months ago, and LauncherPro is all that everybody says. Now, I just installed the Go Launcher, and I have to say that it's superior. The two are so similar in concept that it might have been the same team that designed both, but the Go Launcher, in addition to doing everything that LauncherPro does, has features that make it much more useful and nicer to use. It has, for example, an intuitive interface for organizing apps into folders, in addition to hiding the unnecessary ones. Then it has a couple of settable gestures, the swipe up, and swipe down with which one can hide the notification bar, for example. It's 5x5 icons on the home screen implementation is flawless, unlike in LauncherPro, and the widget resizing method is also easier. Just nice touches all around, and none of them gimicky.
i use adw launcher ex their are so manny different options if you like playing with them you can get it just how you like. its also the speediest i think
I would try HE launcher its free and simple. It has the best of all worlds.

I tried Launcher Pro, LG Home, ADW and of course the standard Motoblur...
I'm kinda after something quick and smooth, doesn't have to be 15 homescreens etc. Um, I posted the original thread to see what tips you guys got.

I use zeam launcher. it's a minimal launcher with low memory's consumption, but there is no cutomization.
Wow, thanx for all tips!
Will now have to try the Go launcher, have to get ADW EX another go as well as HE Launcher.
//Dave
Totally agree. Go Launcher is the one for me. Tried pretty much everything else and chose this one. LauncherPro is my second option. But I think Go Launcher is everything LaucnherPro is, and more. =)

You can't. That's one thing I found out on the Defy. If you install any other launcher the original Blur launcher cannot be selected. I've tried Home Switcher, having two launchers and trying to clear defaults, and any other thing you can think of. The only way to get Blur back is to uninstall all other launchers.
Not true....install an app called homesmack from the market....it is free and will allow u to switch very easily

[Q] What is your favorite launcher and why?

I've been through a few launchers now and am still undecided as to which will be my daily driver. For a long time it was GO Launcher from the market due to the amount of options baked in for free, but it was just too buggy, so I plunked down some cash to try Launcher Pro and it was pretty similar overall, but the lack of a true home screen chaps my cheeks. Now I'm wondering (after seeing so many different screenshots of YOUR amazing setups on your Epic...) what Launcher do you prefer, and why?
ADW Launcher is my cup of tea. It is very customizable from docks, downloadable themes/icons, to the overwhelming setting options to make it just how you want it. The free version is by far superior to the other free launchers by offering more ways of customization. you could of course support the Dev by purchasing the ADW Launcher EX which jams a lot more into it. From a themer stand point the ADW is a very workable Launcher for changing things around to fit your needs for the said theme you would like it to be included in. As stated above though, once you settle into a Launcher that you decide to stick with, support the Dev by buying the full version for all their hard work in bringing it to your disposal.
GO Launcher EX. I have them all (LP, ADW and Go) . ADW is a mess when you start going into the menu's. GO Launcher seems to have taken the best from LP and ADW IMO>
ADW is by far the most customizable imo. I use ADW EX and love it. Some people swear by LP. Try them out and use what works for you. As said above support for devs hard work and time is always appreciated.

Touchwiz, to me its really clean and I can't seem to stray to far from it when I change launchers.
There is a "true" gingerbread launcher out now its pretty sweet that I am currently using though...
ADW for me as well. I have the paid version but the free version is still an awesome find. Lots of great features and customizable themes and icons. I've tried just about all of them and most have a lot of the same features, but I always find myself going back to ADW.
Up until about a month ago I was using adw (free), then I upgraded to Adw EX. It's fantastic. The only complaint I had with adw was the pretty horrible menu organization...Adw EX has solved that! I will say there are a lot of fru-fru options in EX that I don't use (like changing the animation on home screen scrolling) but the dev is super helpful, found plenty of themes and on adw ex, anything I've seen in the "post your homescreen" area, I've been able to recreate.
Oh, and only other thing I didn't like in adw (free) was the inability to ovelap widgets... can do that in EX tho

Ditto here. LP is nothing special (although pretty stable) and you have to pay for ADW to get the features and customization you get for free with GO Launcher.
I've had no issues whatsoever with GO Launcher. It's been stable, fast and has more options than I even know what to do with.
Sprint ID!...LMAO, J/K!!!....I'm TouchWiz for 4ever, LauncherPro is nice, but it doesn't have the widgets I like. ADW FC's and Crashes like a cheap paper airplane, GO is a close second.
launcher pro, clean and simple yet still alot of customizing available
I really like some of ADW's features but LauncherPRO's widgets are what keeps me using it, plus the developer is working on a complete rewrite of LauncherPRO to make it more efficient and lighter.
Interesting that no one had said anything about Zeam... Yes, it is light on features, but that also means it's light on resources as well (and I don't care how fast you overclock, lighter is always better for performance). Scrolling dock, gestures, and desktop resizing; simple and sweet.

I've tried launcherpro, adw, tw, and lately Go launcher ex. Right now I'm really liking go launcher ex. Clean, fast, stable, and features that I like.
Launcher pro plus for me. Like stated above, the scrollable dock and the included widgets you get with the plus version is nice. I downloaded a themed version that has all the widgets transparent with blue highlights and all the buttons at the bottom of the widgets instead of the top and they're also more finger friendly. Check it out there are other themed versions also. You have to buy the plus version to get full benefits of launcher pro IMO.

[Q] Best launcher?

Hi u guys I'm in a big debate on wether which launcher is best and fast. I want your guys opinions.
I'm running my g2 with cyanogens latest nightly build.
First off
Adw: too slow for me
Launcher pro purchased: I had been using launcher pro for a really long time but it takes forever to come up and when u swtich the launcher to landscape mode everything goes bananas.
Go launcher: was using this for about 2 months but I don't like the theme selections.
Adw ex: what imusing right now, pretty fast but also a lil unstable.
What's best for u guys?
Have you tried the stock gingerbread launcher? What it lacks in customisation options it makes up in speed and stabilty.
[sig]My mission is to hit 1000 posts by 23/05/2011[sig]
can't beat adw ex as far as I'm concerned... the new 3d drawer is perfect (literally, I can't tell the difference between it and a vanilla android launcher), theme engine is solid, customization is much more thorough than LP.
I had way more issues with stability on LP than I do with ADW ex... what ultimately made me give up on LP was the 1 minute wait time upon boot (or force close if you're impatient)... that's just plain sloppy.
Agree with both answers. But I think you can see the smoothness of stock over adw ex. At least I can for sure. I wish stock came with three screens and removed those dots at the bottom. Id be in heaven then. Have you tried zeam?

yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if on setups not as stripped as mine, the stock launcher is still much smoother.
I'm only running 1 home screen with the google quick search box and eight app shortcuts. along with no transition animations or other eye candy, it's like butter, especially now that they've fixed the 3d app tray.. used to be a little choppy but now it really is reminiscent of a vanilla GB launcher in terms of smoothness.
I been using LP plus, and say I don't really have issue and it runs great and quick for me not real bloat options,I don't have to take 20 mins to setup the launcher how I like it as adw I don't like the dots, don't like thr trash on toop don't don't like drawer slook
For me launcher pro is definitely the best and runs smooth at all times (except when charging the phone).
Go Launcher Ex is fast, smooth and the most reliable. As far as I'm concerned its the best home launcher right now. I was a long time user of Launcher Pro Plus but the bugs and lack of timely updates really irritated me.
ADW/ex both don't have good enough support for icons other than adw icons and that buff icon set. I'm having the same issue with Launcher pro, although I do like their activity options in the widget menu.
Im using EX but i really want to use another but I can't find any good ones. I liked 91 panda, I don't think it's been updated but I haven't checked either.
launcher pro plus for sure! fast, stable and some nice widgets

you can use any icons you want as long as they're PNG (same as any other custom launcher).. creating an icon pack that will replace your app tray icons as well is a piece of cake.

Poll: Best launcher for HTC Desire Z

Hey
Made a (proper) poll with the best launchers out there. Lets see what some of you use on your HTC Desire Z and why.
Thanks
Edit: I almost put Motorola Motoblur, Samsung TouchWiz and Sony Ericsson UX as options as well but I realized this was for the HTC Desire Z only.
I have used LPP for the longest time now. But switched to GO Launcher just a few days back because LPP didn't work quite as well as GO in the rom I am using. But now that I have used GO for a short while I'm starting to like it. It has some more customization options and generally it just suits me better it seems.
However it's not as clean in its animations. Some of the screen transitions are very smooth and others not so. Sticking with one that is.
A Week ago, I was tired of HTC Sense and so close to choosing another Launcher..
But Sense 3.0 renewed my love to HTC Sense ;-)
I'll try LauncherPro, thanks.
Well, on Sense-ROMs I always used Zeam because of the lacking amount of RAM on our Zee. On CM7 I use ADW EX because it is absolutely stable for me, it is fast, easy to customize and it has received really good updates in the close past, AND because of the hidden dock of course.
LPP I was using also for some time - it was for me just never that stable as ADW is now - it doesn't get updates more than twice a year, the complete rewrite was promised months ago... and I do not need those LPP-Widgets because I got better ones myself; all in all it seems as if the author concentrates on the widgets too much..
I'd use launcherpro for some time on my old galaxy 5. On my new phone I used first sense, then I flashed CM 7, running with adw, but I found adw to be laggy as hell, even at 1500 mhz. So I switched to GO. So far I think it's great for vision/desire z.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
In my opinion, the only thing LauncherPro has going for it is the widgets in the Plus version. ADW EX is my preference because it's smooth, and very customizeable. I love being able to swipe my finger up or down anywhere on the screen to open the app drawer or notifications.
And before someone comes along and says ADW is laggy, I want to clarify that ADW ≠ ADW EX. ADW EX has the code re-written and doesn't lag in the slightest, even at stock speeds.
If it's about appearance and widgets, LauncherPro
if it's speed and less ram usage, ADW EX is the pic
I like ADW EX though
For me its GO launcher but ADW Ex is pretty good in its own right.

+1 for ADW EX
Much better than the free version which does have a pretty decent amount of lag. Love how customizable ADW EX is. Definitely doesn't have the great widgets like LP but its a great launcher, well worth the 3 bucks.
Sense for sure.
I hate the lag when starting up the resource intensive apps, but several things make Sense the Launcher for me:
Clock app with timer and alarms just looks nice
Photo grid/Photo Album widget (no other widgets like that around)
Contacts widget using Facebook *without* a 3rd party syncing software
Calendar/Agenda App and Widget are well polished
Camera App looks MUCH nicer than Stock Android
Weather App and Widget actually locating me properly instead of having to type in a city code
Bookmarks Widget looks and feels nice - all others just seem spartan and badly designed
I liked Adw at first but Go Launched Ex is the best and it's free.

Just discovered Smart Launcher. Minimalistic, beautiful and very organised and practical. I don't even feel the need to make folders. Love it!

[Q] Any of the GOOD launchers work in ICS?

I need a launcher that is very customizable like ADW or GoLauncher. I tried both of them and for some reason they both had the same problem; when the screen rotates to landscape it jumps to the far right screen instead of staying on the screen I'm on.
Does anyone have any good launchers that are working properly on ICS? I also tried Nova launcher but its not customizable enough. I'm going to try launcher pro now and will report back if it works.
OK so I tried LauncherPro and same problem. This led me to investigate and I beleive I narrowed it down to the calendar widget. No matter what screen I'm on, when I rotate screen it automatically jumps to the screen with the calendar widget. Annoying...
you gotta give devs some time to adjust to the screen/ics etc. I would play around with the current flashable ones and wait for a major update that brings lots of customization options
ps have you tried adw ex?

Go works fine.
Go has always been my first choice. However, now with the Gnex and having folders pop down from the Top of the screen has made accessing apps really difficult with one hand. Because of that one issue, I went to Adw Launcher. That works great too.
Been using ADW Ex since day 1. Working flawlessly
After using ADW it's impossible to go back to anything else....
Ultimately I'd like the stock ICS with rotation and that stupid Google search removed but until the mods on here have their bugs ironed out I’m using GO.
My only bad point on GO is scrollable widgets you have to pause your finger on them a sec then scroll. (Is there a setting in there to fix this?) I like the stock responsiveness where you can swing between screens and flick apps around instantly.

Caveat: This is by no means meant as a disrespect to the amazing devs behind ADW, LP and Go EX.
when I got my hands on the GN, i was hooked on to the Android 4.0 look and feel. Previously alternative launchers were needed because (a) Android used to be ugly and (b) stock widgets sucked.
All that has changed now. I cannot bring myself to use anything but the stock launcher. However, I WILL like it if (a) I can utilize the space occupied by the stupid Google widget - its not a widget at all but a shortcut, a complete waste of space and (b) homescreens would be increased from 5. All those wonderful widgets need more space.
I don't want to root, although I have a feeling CM9 will have what I am asking for. In the meantime, I am testing out Nova.
