Video recording app? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I posted this in the Q&A section and it got a couple of hits the quickly got buried. I was wonder if an app existed or could be developed that would allow you when recording to pause and restat a video without you having to start a whole new video.
I thought about this when my wife was using her evo to record our daughters basketball game and she kept having to stop and start new videos to conserve card space when it would have been easier to pause and resume recording.
I know this could go in the Q&A section but I figured if a developer saw this and had some time or was looking for a new project this would be a good one I think.

hope you got thick skin

It would be easier to just concatenate the two videos when you need to rather than rewriting the whole camera stack just for that one purpose.
And wrong forum.

I hate to sound rude, but this is a cell phone. It shouldnt be used like a real camera to record your family's important things. If you want a camcorder that will stop and start without making a new clip, you will need a real handheld camcorder. There aren't any apps as far as I know that can do this.

LMAOOOOO i just understood why u said this about 30 seconds after reading this

if it's a relatively new phone, you can have your wife return it and get the Epic.
My wife has the Epic and it allows you to pause the video and resume without splitting.
Also, the video quality is far, far superior to the Evo. it boarders on Flip quality.
So that's something you can do.

Ok, i get what some people mean by using a dedicated camera for recording but she as well as i both have evo's and we carry those everywhere vs the awh i wish i had a camera moment.
The next thing is that the evo can and does record high quality videos (hdmi out) so why not have an app that makes it act live a regular video camera?
Its too late to swap them out for epic, and i prefer the evo to the epic.
I know there are several phones thst can do it so its not impossible
I know its only about 5 post deep already but i explained why i put this here vs as well as the q&a section.
The evo video quality is far better than flip quality. Come on people really do some of you just sit and wait for an idea to get posted to shoot it down i mean really is that all you guys have in life? If so im happy to give you a reason not to kill yourself.

If the EVO was just a cell phone then I would say you have a point. But the EVO is not built to be just a cell phone, its a smartphone and even saying that is degrading what it do. I had an old 2mp kodak camera a while back which had a small card in it. now you have the EVO with an 8mp camera and a 8gb card and you say don't take pictures. Same thing with the camcorder. If I buy a device worth 400/500 dollars it better be able to do something other than just take cell phone calls. So if dude wants to record rare moments of life that only can be caught if you have a device like this handy, then I say let him. Its not his fault a 3min 5min video is like 2gb. That is where the problem lies, files shouldnt be like that especially if its just a cell phone.

Desire is miles better!

Seeing an iPhone 4 of a friends the other day next to his 3g was quite funny. The so called amazing resolution screen just looked brighter, more colourful and a tiny bit sharper.
It's funny, before I got my Desire I had an iPhone 3g and I was amazed by it once it got updated to 3.0 firmware. Once jailbroke I could customize the way it looked immensely which is something that a lot of people who use these forums say you can't do. Anyway, my contract was up and being impatient I couldn't hold on for the iPhone 4.0. I'll be honest, I really wanted it but a release date wasn't announced. So I went for the Desire. First thoughts we're, great phone, brilliant screen, very fast, widgets are pretty cool, easy to use, coming from iPhone. Then after a few weeks of enjoying it, the iPhone 4 release date was announced. Then I wanted an iPhone again it looked amazing, all the hype was mental. But I just signed a new contract so there was no way of me getting one. My friend had ordered one and it arrived the other day at work. I didn't get to use it but from what I saw, its not much different visually (display) from the iPhone 3g and its practically the same as the 3g, apart from the cameras, speed, multitasking and obviously a few more things.
So basically what I'm trying to say is. It's no way near as good as the Desire, to use and to look at as far as I'm concerned. Seriously the Desire is a way better phone. The camera doesn't matter its good enough and multitasking on the iPhone is just the worst thing I've ever seen its really poor just the way it actually works. It's terrible.
Not much of a review but just something to stop the arguing and give advice when deciding what phone you want. That's if your choosing out of these two.
p.s
I typed this in landscape on my desire with no problems at all. :
Bloke at work brought his new iPhone in and how we laughed as I got him to 'hold' it and the signal strength went down and then dropped.

Yeah, I heard about that as wyell. its something to do with the metal surrounding on the iPhone is the antenna. Haha. Unfortunately my Desire doesn't have a metal surrounding.
;-)
Just been playing with my dads iphone 4 , and laughed at apples version of multitasking!
Played angry birds, then went into calender and back again, to see the game started all again!
So i just had to do it with another game on my phone, to show how proper multi tasking works! Straight back into the game where i left off !
Have a laugh.....a good one

LOL
Fanboyism aside, the iPhone 4 does bring some awesome things to the table, like an amazing camera & camcorder and.. well, that's it. Still, it beats any Android smartphone in that department, hands down.
This chap claims not to have noticed the signal drop whilst he is making calls......
a phone primary function is to make calls ... got to hold your iphone4 in the right way so that you can make calls ... now that is another revolution to the mobile industry
Well, actually, for pictures, the Desire's camera is just as good. Yeah Apple wants to make you believe they have something special, but they really don't. It's just a 5 megapixel camera like everyone else uses (except for the 8 megapixel ones in some other Androids).
I've looked at lots and lots of pictures of both phones, including direct comparison shots, and the Desire's camera is actually the exact same (for pictures, not video).
The software handles some things differently, like the sharpening (I recommend everyone to set sharpness to +1 on the Desire), the pictures look a bit less washed but also lack more detail. But those are just small differences caused by different software and the iPhone certainly doesn't do it better (just a bit differently).
What I actually wanted to say, I HATE when Apple gets credit for doing what others have done for years, like 5 megapixel cameras and video calling. And most of the time, they're not even doing it better and often they're doing it worse (like multitasking or that antenna design, which has been invented by HTC and actually works with HTC phones, without dropping calls).
I got my first android phone yesterday, the Desire and damn it's smooth. I always heard that iPhone apparently has the better keyboard, but the Desire blows my iPod touch away.
I love it and have done nothing but geek my phone today, hail HTC!!

Welcome to the world of Android Elf... it's a great place to live
I don't want to be a jerk or attack anyone, but there is some stuff in this thread that I just need to comment on.
I am surrounded by relatively smart people. Many psychologists also. What the original poster is doing is the following: you don't want to feel bad about your purchase (the Desire) so you blindly attack the iPhone 4. I am NOT saying the HTC Desire is bad. But I am pretty sure that what you are doing here is trying to make fun of the iPhone 4 to make yourself feel better about the Desire.
I did this as well. I bought the HTC HD2 just before the Nexus One was announced and I was like: 'aaah... the HD2 is much better. That Android is almost the same as WM. Aaah.. I don't need amoled screens..' etc. All just to hide the fact that I maybe should have waited an bought the Nexus One.
Anyway, what you are saying is not true. The iPhone 4 is pretty good. In fact, if I could trade my HTC Desire for a iPhone 4 I would do it. And I absolutely love the Desire. But I don't fool myself, I know that the iPhone 4 is better. Let me just give you a few examples:
Appstore. Biggest and best on the iPhone. Facebook is the best on the iPhone. Shazam is the best on the iPhone. Every app is usually the best on the iPhone. Developers see the iPhone as their number one, which is very important.
Games. I choose to wright a separate part about this even though it could have fitted with Appstore. You want games on your phone? Then iPhone 4 is without doubt the BEST choice. Highest resolution display + A4 chip (1GHz) + Gyroscope (or whatever that is called. Check out what the Gyroscope does.. its very nice for games). And off course the best titles. The Android Market fails in the games category compared to the Apple Appstore.
Camera. The iPhone 4 has one of the best camera's on any mobile phone. It's only 5 megapixels, but it takes very good pictures. And the HD recording is again, the best out there. At a smooth 30fps with great adios quality its top notch. With iMovie you can even edit all that stuff on your iPhone..
Build quality. Even though I have not held the new iPhone myself, every review goes the same. The build quality is unbelievable. It will make almost any smartphone to date feel cheap. And I can understand that.. it just looks and feels amazing. At 9.3mm thin it's just a very good looking phone.
Facetime. Now I suddenly realised something a few days ago. This may sound dramatic but try to take it seriously. Apple is helping humankind to the next step. Why? Soon many, many people (normal people, kids, grandparents, mothers, everybody) will go from voice calling to video calling. And yes its because of the iPhone 4. They just make it easy to use and it works well. Try to be totally honest with yourself and think about this. It's true. Videocalling may have existed, but it was crap. That's why it never reached the mainstream.
Battery life. The new iPhone should have a very decent battery life. This happens to be one of the areas where the Desire .. sucks.
So.. I know it is hard but try to be honest regarding these things. Yes I have a Desire myself and no I won't be able to buy that new iPhone for at least a year (and by then, the next one should come out). But I am honest regarding those things.
Oh, and the dude trying to attack the iPhone on the 'bad multitasking'. Angry birds (one of my favorite games ever! ) has probably not been updated to multitasking yet. Remember, the developers must update their apps to work. So again, its a bad argument against the iPhone. Though I won't disagree with the fact that if you want the ultimate multitasking, you are better off with the Desire.
Conclusion: Enjoy your Desire without attacking other phones please. Be a grown up.
Come on...

Now I have not posted in this thread, but really.. Come on...
Why do you think that the people you surround yourself with, describes or adds something to you or your arguments? In this case, I could claim that you could be inside a mental asylum (for being surrounded with psychologists) .
But seriously, "blindly attack"? Where have you been? Its been proved on many iPhones that you can't even hold the iPhone 4 properly without losing your network-connection. The multi-tasking is horrible according to reviewers and other people that tested it. And Steve Jobs email is frakking horrific, but not unexpected.
Since when is this blind attacks? Sure the phone-build, camera, and some software is great, but still no other device would be spared ridicule if the errors is as great as the iPhone 4's. It will be scrutinized and by all means, it deserves the ridicule it to this point have (not)received, lol.

Best camera on any phone???
U must be smoking something there ha ha ha
Have you even seen pix from some of the 8MP camera fones out there, not to mention 12MP fones around the corner.
Yes Apple have more apps then Android, that dont mean they all better.
Games are the ONLY advantage apple has.
The build quality may also be good BUT whats the point when the main function of a MOBILE PHONE which is to make phone calls goes away when you hold your phone a certain way.
I mean come on, your paying £500 for your IPhone 4, you should not be TOLD how to hold it in order to make phone calls. You should be able to hold it how u like and still not loose signal like all other phones out there.
XDA mark said:
Anyway, what you are saying is not true. The iPhone 4 is pretty good.
Appstore. How long has iPhone appstore been.out compared to android market?
Games. Correct games are better on iphone 4 but a couple hours of gaming and bye bye battery. That's why they made the ps3. And there isn't a noticeable difference in display quality against the Desire I've looked at both together and there equally as good, what ever it says on paper.
Camera. The iPhone 4 has one of the best camera's on any mobile phone. It seriously isn't one of the best. Picture quality is same as Desire if not a tiny bit better. You win on video recording but I think in future the Desire will perform the same after an update. I'm sure with the hardware its got it can eventually record at 720p 30fps. You'll see.
Build quality. I agree apple always have an excellent build quality and that's where you're wallet gets emptied.
Facetime. Trust me your not gonna use this. U might at first but eventually you wont. I mean come on how gay is video calling. Hearing a voice is suffice.
Battery life. The new iPhone should have a very decent battery life. This happens to be one of the areas where the Desire .. sucks. Wrong my friend's last about the same as desire according to him. He has both phones.

"Be a grown up" gayest insult of the year award.
I wont quote you one the beginning, I would only say that is not true (that we say Desire is better because we bought it).
I didn't get Desire on contract, I paid it in cash. That means I had the money to buy any phone I like (overall anyone, when we take the fact that I paid for the Desire 500 euro). I knew exactly why I want the Desire. I knew it's features, it's positive and negative sides. I liked the look of Sense (instead of jailbreaking my phone just so I can change my wallpaper, this happen in previous models of iPhone), I liked the OS and it's openness, and I liked it's look. In fact, I liked everything about Desire, and I think that this will be the phone I will have for longest (in case it doesn't break). I know this because with my previous phones, I lost the will to play with them after 3-4 days after purchase. With the Desire is completely different: my work is suffering because I keep doing something on it all the time, and I have it for 3 weeks
I mean, there are so many thing to do with it, sky is the limit (and the knowledge of members here, which I believe is wide and big as the sky).
Anyway, lets go back to some points you made with which I completely disagree (okay, my whole post is disagreement with yours, but still )

That CAN (and will, I guess) change. On the Google IO, google announced 50.000 apps on the market. When was that, a month ago? Today there are over 65.000. That is 15.000 apps in a month. At this rate, there will be 150.000 more apps in the Market in the next 10 months.
But, I hope and expect this rate to change when I'll take in mind how fast people (developers) are turning toward Android.
Don't make me start at the attitude of Apple toward developers.
By the way, developers develop for public. If there are users of Android more then of iOS, they will start developing for Android. Sc**w that fine program if nobody uses it. So their primary motive to do something is "how many people will use their app?".
Apple has more apps, but I bet that will change. In 2 years, there were 50.000 apps in the market. BUT, in just 1 month, there were 15.000 more. Just one month, read that carefully. That shows to me that something is drastically changing.

My same reply from above goes to the games. I will only add something here: At CPU side they may be the same (although there are comments that apple have underclocked the iPhone CPU at something like 700MHz... and we have OVERclocked ours at 1.2GHz ).
Concerning the resolution... it's not that of a big deal. The screen is smaller then of Desire, so that makes the resolution lose. Unless you watch your iPhone 4 display with microscope, then you would notice the more pixels on the iPhone. Otherwise, the naked eye doesn't need more pixels on such small space.

Probably, I can only guess. But what about that same build breaking easy and that same build causing such a big issue with network connectivity?
It's not just build something. Are you aware that in order for you to have decent connectivity, you will have to cover your nice looking iPhone? What's the point?
When we talk abous build quality, we have to take the strength (which sucks, on the second drop the screen dies, on the forth drop the glass is broken) and the looks (which again sucks, because the network sucks if you don't cover it with rubber, and if you do that, it's not good looking anymore).

I don't even want to start about this. I will only say: if those grandparents, parents, children... wanted to see eachother, why didn't they use video calls over 3G? Or whatever other app that exists there for video calls?

If you look at both phones specs (I have), you will notice that on paper they have VERY similar battery specs. And still, your opinion about the Desire battery life comes from experience, but for the iPhone comes from reading? That is rather unfair :/
Just lets wait and see how iPhone will do in real life situations. My wife charge her iPhone 3GS twice in a day. She has to, her battery goes flat at noon. My battery lasts 2 days, with very big usage (I said above, I can't put my Desire of my hands). iWin

EDIT: Wow, this post is so long now ))
Surely face time isn't a winner with it only being on wifi I've had nokia n97 and samsung Omnia both had forward facing cameras i used then both zero times, ok grannies wanting to see grandchilden i get that but i sure as hell don't want to see your ugly mug or the wifes... or my mates.. ok if your away for a while it would be nice to see the face of a family but iphone4 only? and wifi only?...
More megapixels don't make a nice photo, the lense and sensor are probably more important, i would find it hard to believe that the iphone4 isn't better in this catagory, low light shots with the desire are super grainy and striped = bad sensor.
Iphone4 looks very nice right up until you touch it then it's lovely lux black look is greasy finger tastic!
edit: so you have to hold it around the edge... oh wait!
I just have to say a few things in reply to XDA Mark... Psychologists aside :]
Appstore: Really??? Have you taken a look at the quality of apps in there? 80% are duplicates of other apps, 10% are original in their design and 10% are games. Coming from an iPod Touch 2g, I have to say i found all the apps that I need to be productive on a phone in 1% of the time it took me to find them on the ipod just because i didn't have to sift through 1 gazillion useless knock-offs. And then i found some more!
Whoever said MORE apps means BETTER apps??? Yes, there are lots of awesome apps in Appstore but i have not found anything that apps in Android Market can't do and can't do better! And widgets - oh, "non-denominational super-being", I love widgets.
Build quality: Sorry, but after a certain point this is subjective! And you haven't even held it yourself! I find my Desire to have a superb build quality - try to disprove that.
Games: What are we - 12? Do we need silly little 3D games on a 3.4inch screen. That's just laughable. Whoever thought gaming without physical buttons is kewl?! With the current state of haptic feedback this is the most inorganic and crappy method of control. My thumbs take about 35% of the screen of a 3.4inch ipod touch - good luck trying to play like that. My point is - games matter for iPad/tablets. For a phone - i am content with tower defense and sudoku! For Mass Effect 2 I have my HD 5870 and an overclocked i7-920 at home thank you very much.

few qustians before buying HTC DESIRE... please help

when you take pictuers on the HTC DESIRE
lets say when you take a picture holding the device on landscap - does it save the picture as landscap? i mean that does you have to do ROTATE to photos to save them on the computer?
is there any site i can see all the androind app now? so i can know what ill have and what i can't have..
or i have to check the market app only from a androind device?
thats it for now. still having problems deciding what phone to take - Desire or iPhone 4...
the bad thing that the desire have no front camera for future things like making video calls on fring or mesnnger...
p.s. sorry for my bad English.. hop you can help me! thanks!
Yes, if you take the picture in landscape, the picture will be saved in landscape. Same for portrait. In addition, you can edit the orientation of the photo in the photo viewer.
There is an official Android Market site. But it's not very helpful. You can't push applications to your device and the selections are not complete. Appbrain is a better alternative.
Btw, you should know that video calling is not a "future thing". That's what Apple wants you to believe. The front facing camera was so underutilized that manufacturers have since decided to abandon it. Once Apple adopted it, it's suppose to be the next big thing....sigh...
For finding all the available apps you can try http://www.androlib.com , but it might be a bit hard to find the things you want.
And regarding the videocalling, you can actually videocall with fring on your desire, but it obviously will use the rear facing camera. So it kind of depends on what you want to do, is it really i want to see someone when i call them or i want to show them what i am seeing at this moment.
well is there any HTC phone that is android with fron cam also? somthing like the desire.... ??
i think ill be using the fron camera a lot when i be abrod and want to make calls over fring with WIFI connection...
Quick question for you Amir...do you video call now? You say future things like you're expecting it to be the next big thing. It's been available for years. Why have you never thought to do it before but now seemingly would let it colour your purchasing decisions?
i had N95 for lots of time.. and i did use video call but by then it wans't possiple to use it over WIFI and with fring..
so i allways want that like this.
I had an N95 also and was able to use Fring to make Skype video calls a long time ago.
My question was basically , knowing that video calling is a requirement, why don't you stick with Nokia, who rarely leave out the front cam? Symbian is improving at a rapid pace to try and keep up.

That's not 100% correct. The camera hardware is supported just fine...the protocol that is used to make 3G video calls is what I think is missing (someone correct me if I'm wrong) and so negated the inclusion of a front cam.

It's old tech but the carriers here in Europe REALLY thought it would take off. Obviously, Apple being Apple, people will start video calling like they've never done before.
Mp3 players were available before the iPod, but no one wanted them...until Apple did it. Mobile phones could install apps and surf the web before the iPhone...no one wanted to, until Apple did it. People have had cameras on their phones for years...but the dawn of the iPhone has seen it remain the most used camera of ANY kind in the world on Flickr since it was released. Tablet PC's wallowed in the wilderness of computing for 10 years before the iPad...now it's the hottest selling device this year.
Apple people tend to start doing things they had no inclination to do before Apple told them it was awesome to do said activity. Expect the same to happen to video calling.
To be honest right..... video calling is the thing of the ancient past. I'm sure the Pharaoh's used video calling in there time. But HD voice calling should be the future

Panoramic pictures?

Anyone know of an app or if there's a way to take actual panoramic pictures with the EVO 4G? My friend thinks he's tough **** with his iPhone 4 and when he asked if I can take pictures like that I was forced to reply "I'm not sure..." :/
lol....well, any iPhoner is going to try to hang their hat on the one or two silly thing that their phone can do and ours can't. While I agree it would be cool if someone developed and app that can do it, there is a list of things our phone can do that the iPhone 4 cannot, so I wouldn't stress it.
root it, start flashing new ROMs and overclocking, shoot incredible 720p video, and sit your phone up on the kickstand and watch them, or run them through the HDMI port to a HD TV. Then tell him to go shove his iPhone and tell him he needs to keep his personal preferences to hisself. As long as you are more happy with the EVO than an iPhone I don't think it's his business.

If I can remember I'll check when my phone gets done juicing. But I have been looking for a decent panoramic shooter too - photostitch doesn't cut it. At all.
Ye I have been desperately looking for a good panoramic software for the EVO.
The PhotoStich app works....ok, but I want something like the Epic or Droid X as far as it helping me line the next shot up.
Andropan is pretty sweet but on my EVO at the moment, it seems to have a couple of issues with the lineup, in the end I get a picture that is not joined perfectly for many shots, this means I have items in the picture that are repeated again and again since they have not been over lapped.
As this software moves forwards though, I'm sure it could do the job nicely.
I wish andropan and photostitch would get together and have a kid or something
I'd gladly fork over 10 bucks for an app that can do what the Epic's Samsung software does, or even what the Droid X is capable of.
Love the new update Sprint just pushed out though, super smooth now

[Request] front and back camera simultaneously recording video and pictures.

I had a thought today while my 2 1/2 year old was jumping on my back while my 6 month old was laughing hysterically at him and I thought, man I would be nice to use both cameras at the same time to record both things at once. I dont even know if this is possible but it would be awesome if it could happen. Sort of like a picture in picture. I have no idea how to code. So the devs can take this as a challenge, yea, I'm calling out all the awesome devs here to try and make this possible. I know I can't be the only one who would love this and give iPhone users yet another thing to envy.
Mods, if this does not belong in general then I apologize in advance, its not a development release.
Yea. Please someone try to make this happen.

Would definitely be awesome IMO

Great idea!!! +2
Would be interesting!
I don't think it is possible to do that! AFAIK, Android APIs do not support recording from both the camera simultaneously, you need to decide between the two!
Maybe possible through an app? I know that android is capable of using 2 cameras together. Ala evo 3d

EVO 3d uses 2 images to merge together to become a 3d image or video... I personally don't think this is possible for the front and back camera as they record 2 different videos.
Although if an app can record in the background you can perhaps open up a different recording program and record with the other camera. Not sure if it's a solid solution but it's worth the try

Hmmmmm, I would like to see what it would look like side by side, so you could show the reaction if something happens on the main camera.
I am by no means a developer but I was just thinking of how it would actually work. I mean, someone may be able to make it all work out, but how good would the actual video be?
If you record from both cameras and want a good shot of both things, they would have to be along the exact same line with the phone somewhere in between (unless what you're recording is a little far away). If both of the things you are recording and yourself do not make a straight line, you'll move to get a shot of one of them but the other camera will then point somewhere else.
Not the best at explaining without some kind of picture but I hope someone gets what I'm talking about, lol. I have 2 young nephews and this would be a great feature to capture some great moments.
Honestly, the only usefulness is for goofing and getting the reaction of the person/s recording. Trying to record two kids on opposite sides with opposing is just silly and the quality of video will be much lower on one video.

I'm an experienced Java developer who is getting his hands dirty in Android development. Honestly, I'm very new to android development but I'll take up this as my first project.

I would love to see this happen. Its uses could go well beyond just kids. Say track day with my car and having a passenger and being able to record there actions as well as exactly what's going on on the track.

Now that actually does sound interesting. I can see the potential for something like that. I would love to see if something like this is possible. The evo 3d has the capability to use two 5mp back facing cameras at once. Seems like there isn't any reason why you couldn't use the front and back cameras at the same time. Although the difficulty would probably be in software.
Would be great for Track day/AutoX runs

+1 for the track day/AutoX idea. Right now I have two Hero cams, one facing each direction and then have to post-process combine them into a split screen video. Would be cool to just put my phone into a secure mount and be done with it.
Even if one camera is of a higher quality - I'd just point the higher quality one forward and the lesser towards the rear.
Just thinking out loud.

Black Box Recorder Use
This would be very useful as a dash cam, vehicle black box, plane log app. Put your device in a holder and attach to the dash or windshield. Start app and set it to record when GPS detects motion and stop after x minutes of non-motion. Record outside the vehicle or plane straight ahead with the main camera. Record inside the vehicle or plane with the front camera. Sync to same timeline for recording/logging purposes.
Could be a good use for an old Android phone if capable of doing it.
Just an idea.
How about for police stops?
not a bad idea at all....
I no longer have the nexus as I have gotten the s3. That being said 4.1.2 is suppose to have the ability to have the ability to use split screen..... just saying open up the camera on one screen and open it again with the front camera on the other screen.... maybe even some screen recording in there to capture both on one clip

Camera Question

So a while back I was using the HTC One S. I got it for the camera. I prefer samsung, for the most part, and have gone from a vibrant to galaxy s 4g to galaxy s 2. The only reason I did not go to the galaxy s 3 originally was because I needed a better camera. I wound up having to sell my HTC One s for some cash, and now I have the change to get a phone again, I am stuck, once again, between the one s and the s3. Personally, I would like to wait for the note 2, but I don't have the time. I am stuck with a basic flip phone right now, and while i don't mind using a flip phone, I have to have something for tethering with my tablet while I am work. So that is the rock and a hard place. Any phone I buy is going to be a few hundred bucks anyways, so I would rather go another hundred or two more and get the one s or s3.
Personally, the One S was great with the Axiom ROM. The battery lasted forever, and it had great extra features.
However, the s3 is still my preferred choice because of the bigger screen, the 720p, svoice, voice actions, and many other things. Not to mention the extra compatibility with my note 10.1 tablet.
My only real issue here, admidst all my rambling, is the camera. I know the HTC One S has an f/2.0 aperture, and the s3 has a f/2..6 aperture which makes a difference (although some people report the aperture as f/2.4)...my concern is how people actually like the photos and video. Ive noticed some washed out looks compared to the one s. I know the f/2.6 will give better depth vs the f/2.0, but thats about the end of the benefits.
My main concern is quality of photos/videos, and quickness of the picture. I have two young boys and I want to be able to snap a photo that is clear and of good quality, at a moments notice without having to worry about missing it or getting a blurry shot.
Any comments or thoughts on this would be helpful.

If the cam is your main concern, I think you will be happy either way. There may be a difference side by side but if you're not ccomparing the two like that you probably wouldn't care either way.
While some may have had issues with the camera I would say the vast majority have not.
There are a number of things that could cause pic problems here. Lots of people are running jb leaked firmware. Lots are using the cam from the note2. I seem to remember a few had problems fixed by updating the cam firmware...
But like I said, I doubt you'd be dissatisfied with the gs3. I dont know how theyd compare side by side but unless you're doing just that I dont think you'd notice or care.

Ive seen plenty of camera shot examples, but pretty much all (most, but not all) are from still photos are "posed" shots. It takes good pictures, and I think my only issue is its a little washed out vs the One S. However, I can deal with that. My biggest question is lag from button press to picture taken.
So, how much lag is there in taking a picture? If I wanted to take a picture right when somewhat hit the water diving off a diving board, or of my cat jumping from fence pole to fence pole and wanted a shot right in the middle between two poles, etc....how easy would it be? With the One S I could get pretty much zero lag. if I hit the capture button its taken the picture right then, and I can click the capture button over and over and over in rapid succession (not burst mode) and take multiple pictures. I really want the GS3 over the One S for other reasons, but need the camera to be on the same level.
So how quick does it take a picture when the button is pressed?...and how quickly does it recover to take another picture?
I find it to be quite quick on all accounts. Hasn't caused me any issues as of yet. Also, there is a feature where you can just record video and then capture the pics you want from the video.
Have you seen the commercial with the hikers and the goat?
The only complaint I have about the camera is the lack of hardware buttons for it. But I can deal with that.

Thanks for the feedback.
Its rather important to be quick on the camera trigger. Even with the zero lag of the One S I did miss some things. I have my two boys and they can be making a face or doing a little dance to their favorite tv show and I want to capture it, but the moment may just last a few seconds, and I need a quick trigger finger. So I dont want to have to focus and then 'click'. I want to hit and click at the same time.
Right now, however, I am stuck my an LG Mytouch Q and definitely not the best in the camera department. lol
Yeah I hear you on wanting to be able to get that quick shot. Its the msin reason I miss the csm button. But theres also a motion setting where you tap and hold on lock screen whil rotating to landscape takes you straight to the camera. I just added to my lockscreen shortcuts. Auto focus is pretty good too btw.
Dont forget you can always get the S3 and try it for 14 days. If it doesn't meet your needs return it and get the One S.

Thats where my problem lies. I work for T-Mobile. Mind you everything I do here is personal and not affiliated with my tmobile employment, but I work for them, and I know just about everything there is to know about the phones, but because I have not had a chance to really test shutter lag on the phone, I dont know if it meets my needs. I am VERY picky. I don't work in a retail store or anything so I dont deal with the phones in my hand daily.
...and because I work for the company, I do not get a buyers remorse period on my purchases. Once I order it, give or take a couple of exceptions to the rule, its mine. So while I can tell you about every wifi share options, every motion and voice control, and so on, I dont know for sure if the camera lag will be a problem in practical use because I do not have the phone physically with me. ..and when I did have the phone physically with me...I never tested it cause I either had my one s or was not in the mindset of having to buy a phone lol. I will probably get a chance to check out a demo model tomorrow when I head in to work, but I was trying to get it ordered over the weekend, so it would start processing my order. Our order system is different and the sooner the better.

IMHO the Galaxy S3 takes the best pics I have ever taken with a phone. See for yourself. I am attaching two pics of a sunset/day-time at Vanderbilt Beach, Florida. Rarely have I been disappointed with the quality of the pics. At least for me, they almost always turn out perfect. I highly recommend the Galaxy S3. Even in low-light situations, you still get a great pic.
Well 1) it's a camera phone and 2) ymmv. There isn't more "lag" than a cheap point and shoot but this isn't a dslr, it's a phone. It's going to come down to to you and each unique situation.
