Issue with slow 3g on only 1 of my HTC EVOs - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Both of my HTC EVO have the exact same software information
2.2
Base Band 2.15.00.11.19
Build 3.70.651.1
Software 3.70.651.1
PRI 1.90_003
PRL 60675
I did a profile update on both and yet one EVO gets 1 to 2 MBPS and the other gets .1 or less on multiple different speed tests.
What could be the issue. Only difference in the EVOs is one is white and the other is black. (insert racial joke here)

There are multiple threads about this already. There are MANY people experiencing the same thing.

I have seen many posts about this same issue, but have not seen any real solutions. The whole proxy thing, does not seem to hurt or help any issues with my slow speed. I am not surprised that it seems so slow, I have had the same issue with sprint on the Treo 700WX, the HTC mogul, the HTC TP2, the Palm Pre, and now on the HTC Evo.....
I am a firm believer that the issue is Sprint, and not my devices. I am on the road often, and work in varied locations around Southern California and beyond. I have noticed the closer I get to Mexico (and in Mexico) the speed and call clarity is much better. The closer you get to Los Angeles, or anything associated with it, its all downhill. I suppose it could be a capacity issue?

That still does not explain the issue occuring on only 1 evo
Sent from my HTC Supersonic

No one has an explanation that I know of. My 3G speeds started to suck hard in November and many other members did, too. Not too long ago, I was at a friend's house and a guy there had an Epic. We both connected to 4G and ran the SpeedTest app several times standing right next to each other, and he was consistently getting DL speeds that were 3-4 times faster than mine.
My 3G speeds used to be 1.6 Mbps down and now I'm lucky to reach 0.3 Mbps.
I came across a thread today where someone posted instructions to alter the proxy port and address on the phone and it increases speeds, but I haven't been able to test it yet because the building I work in is a dead zone for all carriers so my data speeds here are horrible regardless. Hopefully it helps, because I'm really getting fed up with the slow network issue.

May I have the link to this thread regarding altering the proxy port?

the proxy thing only slightly helped my phone. I'm still getting under 100kpbs constantly. And I've had 6 new phones in the past few months, all have the same problem.

The info is on post #8 on this thread:

Well, that's discouraging. I tired a speed test during lunch and I think my phone may be even slower.

LOS update -- new development

I am currently tethering over a 4g connection, and my internet is working fine, BUT I have a complete LOS for the cell signal. I think this could be a very important fact because we should be able to know some things by the fact that WiMax is working while the cell signal is altogether lost.
Hopefully, with this info, a solution is a little closer at hand.
Ok...when people say LOS do they mean Loss Of Service? Or Loss Of Signal?
Because if its the latter, that sht aint that bad. But if its the former...I'm glad I don't have it.

It is bad. People that get it have to reboot phone for it to come back and it kills battery life. Nit to mention missed calls and texts. It is a complete loss of service.

Its 2 separate radios..
I had pandora going over 4g earlier for hours...but lost signal with a crossed out circle after about an hour. Pandora kept going but u couldn't make a phone call, ths.falls in line with the other poster. Im running eg30plus over latest 2.1 midnight.

As WhiteWidows stated, it's 2 different radios. The LOS people have posted over and over about is the ability to make/receive calls (which is what the OP posted about). The Wimax radio (4G) doesn't transmit phone calls. That's why you can do data on 4G and still make a call at the same time.
.....
Hi guys, this is one of my first posts but I've been a long time reader coming from the Evo 4G forums. I'm rooter using Zedomax v3 and experienced multiple LOS as well.
Last night I tried limiting the clock speed to 1ghz and setting the min at 400mhz. Strangly I now get slightly better reception and never had a LOS yet. Will continue to test out this theory and see if it's clock speed related.
I came about testing this since I ran mine at 1.6 for a while and not only would I get more LOS occurances, I would also get phone freezes lol. I tether and stream music a lot so wanted to keep it slightly underclocked to keep the temps down. Hope this helps as a temporary band aid for the LOS bug
It definitely makes sense that the two radios are separate...the point of my post was just to offer some more information to help figure out a fix.
If one radio fails while the other stays working, do we know that the problem is phone-related? Many posters have speculated that the issue may be on Sprint's end, so I wasn't sure if this info did anything to challenge or support that theory. Maybe it does nothing, though -- just throwing it out there!
Someone posted a log cat of a LOS. There's still some coding in the radio files that thinks there is a sim card. Says sim disconnected and result radio off

Hopefully a solution is found soon, I've seen similar issues posted on various android forums. Androidforums, Sprint community and here. Wish I waited a bit to hear more user experiences....

Has anyone tried editing the build prop to manually change the preferred network from wcdma to CDMA auto? Maybe that'd fix that issue
I have been on my current SGS2 stock out of the box for over a week now and have not had any LOS issues, or missing texts, or data not working, or missing phone calls, etc.....
I have been using wi-fi, 4G, 3G, have an Airaive, went to an area where there is no Sprint service and phone roamed fine and then went back to Sprint service when available.
I have been unable to replicate the LOS issue on my current phone through all possible ways of using it.
My first SGS2 was also fine until I rooted it which then gave me an LOS within 12 hours of doing so.
If someone has a another sure way to get an LOS, I am willing to try it on my stock, never rooted phone but I don't think there are any other situations I can try that I haven't already......
Time.I have went 3 days without a los then 2 in same day.It is all random

Signal problems, what are my options?

As many, many other users of the galaxy nexus have reported, I am having some miserable signal problems. Obviously, CDMA nexus here.
I wish the issue was only that the signal on my phone is bad, but unfortunately it extends beyond that: my entire signal is lost at times. Usually it's intermittent and will happen 4 or 5 times a day for only 30 seconds at most at a time, but sometime (Usually late at night), it will lose its signal for even an hour or two, and I'll watch the battery plummet from as high as 54% to 0 as it searches for a signal the whole time.
I realize this is nothing new for some, but I almost feel like the problem went away for the whole world except for me, due to the low volume of threads related to the issue at all on the boards here. At least, recent ones.
What are my options? I don't really like the idea of trading in my nexus for a refurbished phone. Is 4.03 supposed to solve this problem? I had also read that rooting and flashing radios doesn't make much of a difference. To those of you with the CDMA nexus, what have you done to alleviate this problem? Or are you waiting patiently for an update?
Thank you in advance.
If bought new then return as faulty. Easiest solution.

The problem didn't go away. Most people had to make the decision to either live with it or trade it in on a RAZR or Rezound.

You could:
1. Trade it in for another GNex, on the "hopes" that yours is defective.
2. Trade it in for something else.
3. Live with it & wait it out on the hopes that someday Verizon will ship updated radios that will help. Current rumors say that could still be a couple of months away...
I am on the option 3 plan.
The leaked 4.0.3 radios have had limited & mixed results. For those who they do help, they don't seem to do a whole lot. There are a couple of people who had really good luck. Pretty much the same story for those of us who got Hardware version 10 phones - Haven't noticed any appreciable difference between it and the 9 I got on opening day.
Good luck!
strongergravity, thank you, that was extremely helpful; I was curious to how my fellow Nexus bretheren were dealing with the issue.
If a potential update can fix the radio, then I too will stick with number 3 as you have. Call me a masochist, but this thing is just too nice to part with.
Thank you very much for the detailed response.

I just saw your thread right after I created the exact same one today! I was just wondering what you ended up doing. No one has answered definitively as to whether or not this is happening on all phones. If an exchange will fix it, I would gladly go tomorrow. I know most phones are having trouble with the 3g/4g handoff but that is not the same issue we are having. What do you think!?
Mike
Same problems I've experienced. I'm on my second gnex, same issues.
Also I pulled speed tests next to other Verizon 4g phones (razor, rezound,TB) they all had significantly higher speeds than mine . I did multiple tests around our site, they had at least twice the speed as mine.
The razr pulled three times my speed most the time. 30+mb/s vs 10
The thunderbolt was around twice as fast downloads but uploads were even.
And the rezound was double on both uploads and downloads
I used the speed test app and speakeasy online.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Another comparison I did was turning on airplane mode on and off on all phones simultaneously. And switching 3g only on/off. To see which phones would latch on to 4g first.
Again the gnex was the slowest.
I really wish we received an update to fix this I love this phone!

I posted this earlier on another thread hoping it will get more views here.
So, I'm having the same exact problems but i did a log cat to see what might be culprit.
I have narrowed it down to this:
02-08 11:21:51.912 E/IMSFW (415): IIL: Disconnected from '7467' socket
still have no idea what can cause it yet.
also if you switch to 3g it seems it doesn't happen so maybe its a sim problem on verizons lte network end?
11:22:40.029 E/IMSFW (415): ImsSMSInterface: Registration failed, go for retrying if isim nounce present
that's what i found so if anyone can clarify and maybe see if it is really on Verizons end as this is the 4th phone that has had this problem
I will be going to verizon tomorrow to "try" and get a new 4g sim card and see if that helps somewhat.

I just went to the store and swapped out my 4g sim card... I dropped two calls on the way home from the store so I'm not sure it helped at all. Hopefully it didn't make it worse though!
I also checked my speeds and service against some other phones in the store and the Droid Razr destroyed my nexus and some other stock nexus that were there usually 12mpbs vs my 8 and 1mbps upload vs their 3.
Well I got my issues fixed today I was on tech support for an hour and he suggested to go to a store and get the sim card replaced. And that solved all my issues
Another problem I had was when using the headset for calling the person on the other line would here themselves. This has also gone away, I am so relieved I love this phone and did not want to abandone it.
Well, I did a bit of a test.
I kept my phone on 3g the whole day: Signal did not drop even for a single MOMENT in the entire day. Sure, there are times where it was bad, but my connection never entirely dropped. This leads me to believe that the problem lies with transitioning between 3g and 4g, or perhaps is just entirely related to 4g.
With the LTE network, I will have anywhere between 3% - 50% time with "no signal." It's extremely annoying and I'll always watch as my battery tanks extremely fast.
Maybe it's worth replacing the SIM card or at least, pulling it and putting it back in. Posting this here for others that are troubleshooting this same problem. I'll report back.

3g speeds whilst rooted

random question. i lived in new orleans for 4 years and during those years used a hero and an evo. both phones were rooted, and never had an issue with 3g speeds while rooted. i didnt root my e4gt until i moved to baton rouge, and the speeds were just abysmal. got on the phone with sprint, and they suggested i take my phone to my local sprint shop to see if it were a problem with my phone.
so, i unrooted the phone, and the 3g speeds went from roughly 50kbs to 512kbs. i even reached 1800kbs about a mile away from my house in a grocery store when typically i was getting 100kbs, at the most. for what its worth, i was using blazer rom with stock kernel. anyone ever run into this?
Rooted and rooted using a custom rom are two different things.

gotcha, but i guess i should have made myself more clear. both phones previous to the e4gt were using custom roms, and never had an issue with 3g speeds. i have tried just about every custom e4gt rom, and they all suffered the same abysmal 3g speed disease. maybe its just my area, but again was just wondering if anyone ever ran into this...

I'm not sure many (if any) of the custom roms for the e4gt have any 3g tweaks. The only thing that would affect ur speeds is what modem you have. I personally have seen little difference with any of them but it seems like fb15 is slightly faster than the rest for me.
Probably the one thing you can do is change ur proxy settings.
Dial ##3282# in phone.
Select edit
Type in MSL
select others
select mutimedia
Change addresses to 0.0.0.0
Change ports to 0
Should give you a slight boost.
thanks, yeah i tried that this morning, and interestingly enough made matters worse. well, maybe not worse, but not any better. i just found it very interesting that the speeds would be so much better with stock, thats all. at this point, i dont even think i am going to take it sprint because my initial call was because of the horrible speeds. now, it would just be a waste of time. lets be honest, none of use like going to sprint stores. again, thanks...

Not as fun as XDA, but still....
ha ha! sure, sure. depending on my mood, i may make the trip. its not too far away, and i do love dealing with the indifference that is the sprint employee - at least the ones i have encountered. i know there are good/great ones out there, but the brick and mortar employees have been less than stellar.

[Q] This question is only for those on TMobile UK

I know this might not be the best place for network issues but seeing as the TMobile Forums are useless because no one ever answers my questions i thought i'd find out if anyones having similar issues to me. For the past week or so ive noticed that my reception isnt as strong as it used to be like for example at home i used to get full bars now i only get about 2 bars max and the internet speeds are really slow wherever I am..even tho its showing as connected as HSPA. Also sometimes the connection randomly cuts off and then suddenly comes back on again. The phone hasnt been damaged in any way, the only thing ive done to the phone is did an ota update which updated the hboot and radio but then i went back onto arhd 9.7.2.
Hello
My friend who uses an IPhone 4 on T-Mobile lives in Sheffield has noticed the service/signal has deteriorated over the last couple of weeks. Previously she would have full signal everywhere in her house. We wondered if it was because of the current upgrades to 4G that is happening in Sheffield and also London. Maybe that's what's affecting your signal too?

Yep I had a feeling it could be because of the 4G upgrade but I wasnt too sure, if alot of people are experiencing similar issues then that must be the reason for it.

But surely updating the radio is meant to make it better not worse?
I'm on T-Mobile UK and the signal has definitely deteriorated recently (I also live in Sheffield). I've been operating on the assumption that it's because of the 4g/EE happenings.
Now I think about it, it also coincides with me switching from stock to custom ROM.
The change certainly hasn't been of large enough magnitude for me to want to fix it though.
Try a network test app and then post the results. I'll do the same later tonight so we can compare?

I used the speedtest.net app and the first two times i tried the test it failed on me and on the third try i got these results:
Ping: 176ms
Download Speed: 3.41mbps
Upload Speed: 1.65mbps
Which is so weird because its never felt like i've gotten those speeds recently. Maybe I just got lucky and had a decent service at that time because I know later on its gonna go back down to a terrible service..I just hope the 4G upgrade has something to do with this and not my phone.

yes, an update ALWAYS makes it better... especially on something with so many variables, like the radio.
/sigh.
T-Mobile have uncapped speeds now. So no more slow downs, upload has significantly improved.
3G speeds are dependent on signal strength, time, congestion, etc.
Make sure your masts are not being worked on as well as sometimes this can cause downtime.

[Q] Proper configuration...

Hey guys, I just bought a replacement Epic Touch 4G off of eBay after my old one ate itself.
I spent about 9 hours screwing around with the thing, and eventually was able to get voice and eventually 3G working. The MSL code was different from the one the (very frustrated) Sprint customer rep expected (only found this out afterward, using the getprop trick in the shell), which was interesting.
Anyway, I've been on an interesting journey with this thing. I'm completely comfortable with hard technical stuff, but the behind the scenes goings on behind cell phones is outside my usual domain. However, most of the kinks I was experiencing initially, seem to be smoothed out now.
But one thing is still killing me. My signal has been positively abysmal. I was having trouble updating the PRL the official way, so I learned how to use QPST to do it. At first, I threw a corporate PRL in there. No change. Then I changed to 25014 (the latest?), but still extremely poor performance. Additionally, most of the time, data is connecting at 1x. Once in a while I'll see 3G connect, but it's rare.
I'm looking for any suggestions on what to tweak, or -- better -- for a list of expected values for the #-code screens, so I can ensure they're correct. I'm not sure who had this phone originally, or what they did to it.
Much thanks, and if there's anything I can add to this to help, let me know!
