Z4 root? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I just "rooted" my phone with the z4 app and the root checker says its rooted also I have busybox and superuser. I'm super new at all of this all I want is gingerbread on my epic how can I do this and what do I need to make my phone awesome. And can I change my battery in the status bar? Everything I download says not compatible please help
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

There are no gingerbread roms. Period.
There is no froyo source to build from.
Use search before posting any questions.

Agree... if we don't have froyo how would we have gingerbread? Also your gonna need more than root to flash anything.

I see some young grass hoper hasn't done there homework.
1)z4root only gives you root
2) gingerbread is not available on the epic and will be some time before it is.
3) look at number one. If you samba flash something you need cwm installed
If you searched or even read the newbie thread that's stickied you would know all of this already. Do your home work. Search xda. Search google. then do a manual search if xda. Then read, re-read, then read again and then ask a question.
Android Creative Syndicate- From spontaneous ingenuity, comes creative brilliance

I don't claim to be a pro but besides z4root you're also going to need CWM on your phone before downloading and flashing any ROMs at all. The ROMs themselves can be found in various threads throughout the Android Development forum. Some of them have made changes that include the battery icon. Others have themes you can also download and install that will change in automatically for you. Either way if you intend on messing around with your phone I suggest two things.
A) Do a complete backup of all information of your phone
B) Before doing any software/operating modifications read through all instructions thoroughly. There's often a lot of headaches involved for the first little while and some of it can be alleviated by making sure you have everything you need done before you start.
Remember this isn't an exact science and there is always the chance of bricking your phone. Make sure you're ok with that.

??????
It seems from your post that u don't know much about the epic. or how to root. All the advice people are giving you is valid. BUT... Here is the thing. If you don't know what your doing your more liable to brick(or semi brick your phone). Here is my suggestion RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH here is a list of things u should look up.
odin and how to use
1 click root
what rooting enables u to do
(if u don't already have it) How to set up an android debuging bridge
Its better to teach a man to fish then to just give him one.
You may not like it now but in the long run it will be a great help when A you semi brick your phone or B you have a question that could be easily answered had u looked it up.
p.s. Not compatible- try downloading astro download manager or linda download manager off the android market.

thanks for all the info but i did do research and read the simple step by step instructions i just dont understand (questions 1-3 by MysteryEmotionz i knew already) and i had my epic since october (company phone) also i work at a cellphone store so i know froyo isnt out yet but i figure someone woulda made ginger bread compatible somehow since the nexus s is a samsung :/
i found a theme that i really want i just donno how to get it compatible with my phone (roms or kernels) and it didnt say so i didnt know if i should unroot it with the z4 app and maybe root it through the computer like those one click roots.. cuz thats what the instructions said i also dont really have a computer to do all the file transfers from so it seems kinda hard to do everything from the phone and yes im a noob to all this rooting and customizing but i really do appreciate your help i thought thats what forums are for..

[Q] I just rooted HTC EVO, now What

Hello,
I am a rookie in android world, i just rooted my HTC EVO with 2.2. I was wondering if some can tell me the benefits of rooting the device and tips and tricks
thanks
I wonder why would you root your phone and have not one clue on what it does or what you can do with it. And if you rooted your phone obviously you know how to look through a forum.. also you should do nand unlock also.
Anyways. Things like over, underclock, use 3rd party apps, use apps that have to have root in order to use. That's some. There is a search button that helps out alot unless you are using the app for xda then use Google. Also if you read through topics if mostly on topics when rooted. Also custom roms and kernels.

Yeah that was putting it lightly. People are going to flame you for posting something you can learn by just reading a few posts in each thread.. or going to back out and nit even give you 10 seconds of their life because you fail to read or search on a topic that makes this forum. If it wasn't for rooting and all the other stuff that comes with it. And I gave you some info. I don't feel like searching everything for you and posting the link.
Edit: helpful guidelines... search button and Google are very helpful. Serious and all, spend a hour on here in the forums and you will answer the questions on your post. I was new on here when I got my evo. I rooted because I heard what you can do. Not because I heard about root and had no clue. If you Google there are yahoo topics asking this and fully explains. Wiki fully in detail explains this. So many other websites and forums have the info you want. I'm not trying to sound rude here and people might take it as rude. You will probably here 10 times from people about the search button after hearing it from me.
Edit again. There isn't really any guidelines after root. Depends what you want to do after. Use apps that use root, use a custom rom or kernel, or theme and customize everything... well almost everything..
If I could post links to the info I prob would.. but can't..
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
The main thing after rooting and nand unlock is to be able to use custom roms and kernels. There are 2 types. Sense and senseless roms. Senseless roms are called asop. Cm6 is a rom that has no sense in it at all.
You can use setcpu which is a paid app in the market to overclock or underclock. You need a custom kernel and sometimes with stock kernel you can overclock. You don't need a custom kernel to underclock. Also there are many thing implemented in kernels to help your phone run faster or use less battery. Read all kernels. Some kernels can only run on sense or asop roms.
You can change most stuff on your phone. When you turn phone on you have the splash screen which is the first thing on. Then you have bootscreen. Both can be changed. You can change the icons with an app in the market but forgot the name of it.
There are different launchers. Launcher pro and adw launcher.
Each has there own pros and cons.
You can change keyboards... like swype and Droid x keyboard or ones in market.
Most of the icons on the status bar can be changed. There are themes that theme everything on your phone..
So much more.. you can spend hours on here and find new stuff to do. You will probably put a custom rom on and kernel and there almost all of them or enough and find one that suites your needs...
Hope this helps better.. I'm bored at home while girlfriend is at the bar..

Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Depends on what you are looking for... every rom is different. They all look different.. and some take out gapps (Google apps) and sprint apps.. just try one first to learn how to flash a rom and understand how to do that. Then just read up on roms and find one that suites you..

hehe... let's see if I got this right.
You rooted your phone
After rooting your phone, you're asking what you can do with it now
marty responds and thinks it's a little strange why a person would root his phone and then ask what benefit it was, to do so, he also includes some benefits of rooting, then follows it up with some helpful advice on how to use the search to find answers here
You respond by telling him to FU with the criticism, and give him "real answers"
This world never fails to amaze me.
Common Sense 101 (you got that in your nym, but sadly, nowhere else) is you READ about what rooting is, what bad things could happen if you do it, what advantages and disadvantages there are, how dangerous it is to do so, how hard it is, the success/failure rate of it, the different methods of doing it.. You do all this READING.......
BEFORE YOU ROOT YOUR PHONE!!!!
Would you not agree, that would be a more sensible approach?
Granted, it's too late now, but maybe you could use that approach in the future?
This is not criticism, this is a HELPFUL GUIDELINE
I got your back
Wow Deja vu you are me a few months ago. Well I think I will help you out a little bit.
Rooting does two things. First, it gives you su binaries and a supeuser app that let you access your phone's operating system to make small changes and use apps that could harm the phone over a long time and/or save you moneeeeey! Second, it lets you install a custom recovery. Recovery mode is a tool that lets your phone update itself and, in a total system crash, recovery itself. A cutoff recovery can make the phone think it is being updated or recovered, but is actually being totally changed.
NAND unlocking lets you make major changes to the operating system that you couldn't do otherwise by removing all security (from you, not from hackers) and letting you install asop and other stuff.
Once you get a custom recovery, you can flash (falsely update with a read only zip file) a rom. These rooms can have small or large changes depending on personal preference. You can add themes to these rooms the same way, and change kernels, as well as installing root only apps.
Remember, before you flash anything ALWAYS make a nandroid backup in recovery mode, so if your phone is totally wrecked from the inside, you can fix it. There is no other way to fix it if you mess something up.
You're welcome.

the procedure I followed to root my stock 2.2 EVO, basically you downgrade to 2.1, install unrevoke, upgrade to 2.2.
Here is a good one that goes through all the steps. NOTE: YOU WILL NOT FOLLOW this for your phone, but it gives you an idea of what you next steps are.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5214290
From the link above, research every step, so you learn the pros/cons. For example, why wipe my phone, do I need to, does the custom rom require it, what does wiping do.
AND remember, BACKUP FIRST, BACKUP FIRST, should I say that again.
When you rooted your phone, you installed a Recovery Mod, you should via SuperUser be able to boot into it. There is a feature called NANDROID, use it to backup your system and apps before you do anything else. You will then be able to use the same procedure to restore if you do something that breaks your phone (breaks as in the system), going forward.
Good Look Chief, sounds like you are on your way. One last, google search "best roms for Evo", see what you come up with, I think there are 6 or 7 good custom roms out there now for the EVO, make sure they are ready for 2.2, but anyway, investigate the pro/cons of each rom before going forward.

Honestly, cyanogen is too unstable and you lose too much. It is very widely respected, but I do prefer ava v7 froyo. It has the battery life of fresh, and some great visual and app enhancements. Choose wisely. And, I cannot say it enough, NANDROID BACKUP! ! !
IDK how someone who actually had the patience to ROOT stock 2.2 (which looks very much like a pain in the ass to me!) is so clueless after having just completed that task? Wouldn't you have a few ideas in mind before you rooted your phone?
Thanks for the nice remarks. The reason I didn't look ahead because I wanted to see if I can root it or not. Once I was able to next step was to do creative stuff with it.
I hope you r satisfied

Good Hearted & Understanding... STAY THAT WAY!
quick question ken 101, your evo came android 2.2 stock? before you rooted it

[Q] Unlocking the New HTC EVO 4G

I know, I know, I know...
I am a member of a few different forums for other things and there is always a neb that comes on and asks a question that has been beat to death.
I have heard that God kills a kitten ever time someone post a thread before doing a search on what you are trying to get answered. So for my sake, God's sake and that poor kitten sake, I did read through a lot of post before I had the sack to post this question
I am posting this question because there seems to be a lot of different answers to a lot of different questions, so, I was hoping for very direct answers to these questions that I know have been asked plenty of times...
Here it goes...
I have purchased the HTE EVO w/ android 2.2 and I have had it for about 2 weeks.
I want to root my phone, which is my first ever smart phone.
This is what I would like to happen...
1) I want to be able to have the restore point so that I can flash my phone back to stock so that if something happens the warranty will still be good.
* Does this save on my home pc or sdcard? Or Both?
I have read that you need to download here not there(ruu...clockworks/rom manager)...no here not there...If you download anything but this you will not be able to get it back to the stock setting and Sprint will know you have rooted the phone...The whole thing started to get a little confusing.
I am a very simple person so I am hoping for a very simple answer, if there is one.
1) How do I root my HTC EVO that has the android 2.2?
2) How do I make sure that I can have a recovery point incase I mess it up (brick, etc...)
3) How do I make sure that I can flash my phone back to the original settings just incase I have to send it in to be fixed for some reason, which rom manager lets me do this?
4) Is it legal to do this?
5) What might be the biggest no-no to do before, during and after you root your phone?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this.
Visit the wiki, that should answer most of your answers.
1. Rooting voids warranty
2. Always perform a nand backup if you want to revert to your previous state.
Visit the wiki, the instructions are simple.
EDIT: Actually the wiki will answer all of your answers.

Rooted EVO, want to install Gingerbread... Basic ROM?

Alright, so I have honestly looked every where and read as much as I can.
I have a Rooted EVO with the stock ROM. I really want to update to Gingerbread but am very confused. I do not want to lose my rooted status and I do not want a ROM with a bunch of MODS. I just want a simple stock ROM with Gingerbread and Root access. Is this possible. I am confused by everything I read and do not want to brick my phone.
Will updating my phone with the OTA while Rooted ruin my phone? Will I be able to keep my root status?
Thanks!

There are two different rooted versions (with very minor modifications) of the new stock Gingerbread ROM (anything with the labeled "Sense" is based on HTC's ROM's, though some of them are based on ROM's from other phones), both on the first page of threads in this forum. Look for "4.22.651.2" in the thread subject--and yes, those will keep your phone rooted and S-OFF. I believe there's a third thread with a method of updating without a flash, and yet another with minor modifications to the stock ROM (the Titanium-X ROM).
By contrast, anything that says "AOSP" is based on the Android Open Source Project, and therefore quite different from an HTC ROM, though all functions work on many of them (but there is some debate on how well the various radios work on AOSP ROM's).
Okay maybe I had that coming or maybe I just didn't phrase the question right.
I looked at the page linked above before I posted this and I read it all and still was confused. I guess I am looking for the idiots guide to doing this. I don't feel confident enough on my own.

Alright will do!
I thought the Q&A was for other basic questions. My error.
Do you have the latest recovery installed of RA or Clockwork ?
I have clockwork i believe. I just did what I think is a nandroid backup, I went into recovery and did backup.
That's always smart so you are doing good so far. What you want to do now is download the zip file and place it on your SD card. You can download it directly on your phone if its easier for you (wifi recommended). Just follow the link posted by dodgerbluehero above and I would recommend starting with the odexed version.
Now go into recovery and choose flash from zip - then - choose zip on SD card. Navigate to the downloaded file and hit the power button to select it and again to confirm. It can take a few minutes to write the files so just leave it alone. It will tell you when it's done and you can reboot.
These instructions are from my memory but should be pretty close. You would typically want to wipe but the dev says not to worry about it if you are coming from a stock rom.
Give it a shot, you will be fine. Pm me if you have any questions because the mods will probably close this thread soon. Good luck!

what confuses me is where it says "firmware". Do I still have to install that or just the ROM??
The firmware is optional. You can install the rom and then decide if you want to flash the radio as well afterwards.
After you flash, the first boot sometimes takes a little while. Just let it do it's thing. You will be happily surprised how easy this actually is to do.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
but what benefit does it have? is the radio i have not as good?
Some people get better results with signal/3g speeds/wimax. The consensus seems to be that it varies by phone and area.
You can flash the rom without also flashing the radio and be just fine. Stop worrying and take the leap.
On the other hand this may not be for you.

Well I appreciate the time you spent explaining it. I just don't have the money to buy a new phone if I brick it. I rooted my phone on my own but never did any rom updates. I am going to try it once it downloads. Thank you again.
Oh one more thing, be sure that your phone has plenty of charge to make it through the flash and restart or that could lead to bricking your phone.

I am new here to, as far as posting. I love this forum, but there is ONE bad problem; there is TOO MUCH information on some topics. Search is easy to say, but very hard to do and sift through sometimes HUNDREDS of posts and still not be able to find what is needing to be found.
I swear, I wanted to find if there was a STOCK ROOTED ROM, available to me, and all I could find after an hour was a listing of I think maybe 50 ROMS, and NONE of them stated it was a ROM that would unroot my phone, or if my phone would stay rooted after the flash. I still dont know. I gave up looking.
I purchased a launcher pro license also, but I'm finding that I like GO Launcher EX and most of the GO Dev team's apps better. It's far more customizable and bacon-y.

No problem. In the meantime there are other things you can do to achieve a more customized feel. I am a sucker for transparent widgets, which can be found here:

Also, I have purchased the full versions of LauncherPro and Custom Launcher Icons from the market.

I don't think the evo will be rooted ever again we are screwed every one now has the crappy evo 3d. I was wondering if the same method they use to root the phone would work on ours

Crappy? I own both phones and the 3d is nice, it has a couple bugs that need to be addressed but the dual core makes it much faster and I'm getting about 13 to 16 hours battery life on a stock battery, I'm barely getting a little more than that on my extended battery in the EVO... Sidenote: the OTA gingerbread update made me switch phones, my og evo hasn't been the same since

I have searched, and searched, and been confused by what appeared to be conflicting information.
I've seen people with my version rooted, but don't understand enough yet so I thought it would be appropriate to ask. Again I have been reading about rooting this phone since I got it, but as this would be my first root I wanted to be certain I moved forward correctly first.
I am sorry if I offended you.

I am new here to, as far as posting. I love this forum, but there is ONE bad problem; there is TOO MUCH information on some topics. Search is easy to say, but very hard to do and sift through sometimes HUNDREDS of posts and still not be able to find what is needing to be found.

Here is a stock rooted rom for when you get root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830153 There are a lot of things to view in this forum but honestly it takes time to understand stuff. I did not learn to decipher new from old and right from speculation right away. You got to sip through the crap and especially before asking certain things. Hey better yet PM a person if you have a question and you think they may be able to answer you. The mods made changes in this forum as well as others a while ago to make developers post things in a certain manner to make it easier. I read this from one of the stickys... which I recommend everyone to read..
[ROM] 08/03/11 | SPRINT LOVERS | 2.3.3 | 4.24.651.1 | Radio/Wimax/PRI All-In-One
[Kernel]Golden Monkey 1.1 (31-July-2011)
etc.... take a minute and take it all in it could be overwhelming

some people with your version were rooted prior to the new software upgrade so that is why you see them rooted. Right now you have to wait and believe me when it is rooted you will know and no need to ask anymore. Keep checking Develpment section.
Read the Unrevoked 3.21 thread or even the HBoot 2.10 downgrade thread just for an fyi on how things work

Yes, you are able to acheive root through flashing a pre-rooted rom but aside from that, no, you cannot get root just by re-rooting. S-off just means the security flags are off for your device meaning the boot loader doesn't discriminate files. As long as it's PC36IMG.zip you should be good to go. If you want an appropriate way to flash roms, I suggest looking at twrp. It's sexy as hell and I love the red rum theme for it.
It's the first themable recovery, and it looks great. Then you can look at getting cm7 or any other rom you want regardless if you want AOSP or Sense.

Thanks. I remember when I took OTA update and thought that I was screwed, but only to find I was S-off. There was a thread where I flashed amon ra recovery and was able to flash a custom rom (mikmik). I went back stock and have not messed around with my EVO (other phones and tablets Lol). Just been out the EVO loop lately and was not sure if flashing amon recovery was the preferred method still.
Going to take a look at the recovery you suggested and give it a go. I'm just so use to cwm. Even having amon was a different feel for me.
The dual core processor is probably the difference other than that is the same crap and I forgot to mention about the 3d camera its horrible!! Htc said you don't need glasses I just a video for a few seconds and got dissy it doesn't make any sense about the whole 3d deal. And also why would they lower the megapixel of the camera specially if your going to have a 3d phone? I think no body is able to use the 3d feature because of the quality

[Q] Rooting and ROM

Hello, this is the first time posting on this forum and relatively new on the android platform after jumping ship from blackberry. So, i have afew questions i hope you guys can help me with.
1. I heard/read alot regarding rooting to bring out the full potential of an android(s4) phone. What is the full advantage of rooting my phone? How does granting administrative access affect my phone performance?
2. I often see the jargon of bloatware on this forum, what does it exactly mean?
3. What is the function of ROM?
Sorry if these qns are repeated, please direct me to the answer if it is already present in the forum. thanks

Rooting your phone gives you access to do anything you want ie (Apps 2 sd) that the phone dosent permit you to do.
A ROM is just a different feel, and its a faster alternative in upgrading your android ios. (S4 has touchwiz, can change it to Htc Sense)
Bloatware is a bunch of unnecessary apps that Carriers know youll never use but have it just cause. Its annoying and it takes up space. Rooting allows you to delete these apps, cause if its not you wont be able to remove it.
I hope this helped, ask again if you have any more questions.

I was wondering if there is a sort of rooting guide for dummies out there. I want to root my phone to get rid of some of the bloatware that I will never use, and also to delete the annoying start up and shut down sounds. Other than that, I'm happy with Touchwiz so far, but I suppose adding custom themes would be fun.
I rooted my last phone (Samsung Vibrant) over 2yrs ago and don't remember how I did it. I know I installed a custom ROM, but don't remember how to do that either. I remember following a really good guide with pictures and step by step instructions though. It's early days yet with the S4, but I really hope someone will do the same kind of guide because it's very helpful for those of us who like to customize but don't have the time or knowledge to seriously get into it. When I look at some of the threads on rooting it just seems like a foreign language to me!

Try the motochopper method - the guide is pretty simple and self explanatory however if you're on latest kernel then rooting is a no go as of now

Thanks I looked at that and it seems straightforward, but I'm concerned about what to do after the actual root. Things like how to back the phone up in case I mess it up, how to delete things, how to add things. Also I find a lot of the terminology confusing... not quite sure what all the acronyms stand for either, like ODIN or CWM, or what each thing does exactly. This is the kind of thread which would be totally useful: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028 (this one is for the Vibrant though, so I think a lot of it would be different on a different device?)
As far as the kernel... as far as I know nothing has been updated. I got the phone on the first day it came out so I'm assuming it doesn't have the latest kernel. How would you find out? Not even sure what the kernel is or what it does :\ I would like to find out though!
^^^then you might be on an earlier kernel version anyway trying to root by motochopper method won't brick your device even if it doesn't go successful so no worries.
ODIN is the same software that service centres use to revive your bricked device - as a matter of fact with Samsung drivers, a usb cable and stock rom downloaded from online sources like sammobile, you can revert almost any instances of soft brick. Simply saying ODIN will flash back factory/stock rom anfd make your device as it was when you bought it. And yeah flashing via ODIN and all are more or less same procedure for all Samsung devices
Cwm is a custom recovery. If you don't know what recovery means it might be worth googling for better understanding the concept as even my knowledge is limited and my explanations might fall short of your expectations

with regards to rooting my s4 which is running on 4.2.2 jellybean, does motochopper actually brick my phone? In addition, can i root my phone to remove the bloatwares and afterwhich, unroot my phone again, with all the bloatwares already permanently removed? Is it possible to download the full list of softwares of the s4 online such that if i accidentally remove an important software, i will be able to restore it. As I am someone who is not into very much customization and over-clocking, i believe i dont need my phone rooted for custom ROM right? I can use stock ROM when my phone is unrooted and clear of bloatware?

Steps
#1. Locate GS4 box, place phone inside box.
#2. Return to store and get iPhone.
Serious tho. Best thing you can do is READ. SEARCH and READ. SEARCH and READ.
If you are unsure about something, READ again. Most questions have already been asked and answered.
If you find yourself lost......SEARCH and READ. Believe me this is this most useful advice you will ever get here.
Stuff is so easy now compared to when android 1st started. I remember rooting my G1 on a terminal prompt and installing recovery with wicked long commands. Now everything is automated and the hardest (NOT) part is reading the step by step instructions provided on almost every mod and tweak.
Welcome and goodluck !
