[Q] Should I buy a Defy? - Defy General

I bought my first Defy just before Christmas.
Well I lost my Defy in the Indian Ocean on holiday a couple of weeks ago..... waterproof video
Problem is I really liked the Defy but is it really worth paying for twice £260 x2 ?
What is it like with 2.2 and will it ever get an open bootloader?
Convince me to get another one, because I can't decide.
BTW I'm now using a Nokia 5800, so it may not take too long before I get the urge.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940683 ...... nice.

Question is: What are alternatives and what features do you need? If you need waterproof video, the selection is probably limited . 260 Pounds sounds a bit expensive IMHO.

1.Don't know yet, 2. probably not.
I personally think the phone is worth it's money and it is a solid and reliable device, but because of the locked bootloader I will not buy a Motorola phone again and hence will not convinve you in buying one.

By elementary economics/accountings, your bricked phone is historical and shouldn't be factor in your decision

Why pay so much? On ebay you can find new for 200-220 euros. i found mine for 190

problem resolved
checked on Ebay and put in a bid for £215 on a new sim free Defy and won. Was checking out Samsung Galaxy S as well, they look nice. FTR Nokia 5800 is fairly rubbish, but worth £70.... hello Ebay
The moral here was that we shouldn't be too tight with our money. Or tie string on your phone when in the sea, you choose.

Hhahaha i will buy one to test it and give to xda community some info about it.
So, has anyone bought one of these? My HOX fell down on hard asphalt a few days ago and the white housing got dents on three corners. After I got a proper pouch I would like to replace it because I plan to use the phone for at least two years. To be honest, I feel a little uncertain about ordering stuff on eBay from Chinese people. But so far I haven't seen an alternative.

WOW...wat you got against the Chinese bro. I admit that China does make cheap ripoffs of the real deal. But if the titles says its legit, you can buy it, and if you dont think its legit, just ask for moneyback.. Why you gotta make this so racist
How easy is it to replace the back cover? I mean, does it just come off and the other one goes on?
Its so easy, find some videos on youtube about this.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
Here's the link to the gray one.

There are several sellers on eBay selling the same product. Lowest price was $47 shipped.
Now all we need is someone selling a deeper one with a high capacity battery

Hey, no offense intended. I've got nothing against the Chinese in general, e.g. I've got a very cool Chinese colleague. But I wondered if it is so easy to get your money back from a guy in China if he sells you a crap or fake product when you live in Europe. I would have asked the same if the housing had been offered by someone from Argentina or South Africa, simply because it's a different country far away and I have no experience with ordering from there. Calling this racist is nonsense.
Has anyone bought this yet? I want to but I'm concerned about the quality.

Its not racist, the Chinese have form for knocking off everything and everything, even down to forging cancer drugs that instead of helping with the disease help to speed it up instead.... Those damn things have found their way into legit doctors surgeries.
So no, commenting on the fact the chinese regularly flog fake bunk is fact not racism.
Has anyone bought this yet?
I ordered this past weekend. I'm in Canada so it may take a week or two.
Hong Kong is not part of China so don't worry . I was told by a seller it was original by HTC so I should expected it to be exactly the same. I don't know whether to be assured or to find loads of flaws from the building process .
interesting. I've been waiting to see the inside of the case. Some places have been saying the body is manufactured by machining but that looks a lot more like an injection moulded part. Maybe a small mount of post machining / polishing.
the question is, how hard is it to apply it yourself to the device ?!
saw a couple of video's on how to replace the housing.....from the looks of it, scary
That's just me :cyclops:

Has anyone gotten a new Nokia N1 running Lollipop yet?

Although for the Chinese market, I would love to get my hands on one here in NYC to see how it turned out compared to their Winblows based devices.
I got it ... Its nice in look ... But I just found that the headset is not working ... I just tried to use iPhone headset but doesn't !
i got one.
@ran816 the headset is working after an update (a couple of updates ago)
Does anyone know where to import one from? I really want one but I don't want to pay $450 off ebay for one.

Yeah, I tried asking all of the sellers if they would accept any offers but they all said no. I'm willing to pay 300+ shipping which is reasonable considering that's a 20% profit for them give or take. I just can't justify that much of a markup for something without a good reason. It should he released in Spain/UK soon anyway.
I had a Nexus 9 but I wasn't a big fan. I liked my Nexus 7 2013 more than the 9 by far. I used to also have a LG GPad 8.3 and I loved it until I broke it. I'm hoping this will be a good tablet to fill the Gpads slot now that I'm tablet less (unless my Nexus 6 is a tablet )

Where do they ship from? Are they a reputable vendor? I realize other members have bought one from them but I'd rather be on the safe side
I bought a Nokia N1 about a week ago from China. Already got 4 system updates. Out of the box was 5.0.2. Latest build number is A5CN410.
The build quality is unbelievable for the price range. Not to mention the screen. Only one issue, no Google Play Services, yet.
I bought the nokia n1 on this site: smartophone.com
it works very well, but still not google apps !
Nokia N1 ,Chinese Edition.
I've got one ,but it sucks by now,'cause it ships without google service,a lot of apps works incorrectly on it .
I bought mine on Amazon...Google Play Store right out of the box. Be sure you get the Taiwan version!
Loving it so far!

good that common sense prevailed.
buy a new handset even if your budget is a limiting factor. this way you will save the hassles of battery issues + android version.
Dude, it's almost 4 years old..., not 3. Still alive thanks to XDA devs. I'm amazed how I started with Gingerbred 2.3, and now I'm running full-blown 5.1.1 Lollipop. That phone survived for 3 generations!

Front glass broken

Hi there,
today I dropped my phone on the street and the front glass got broken. The phone is still fully working. Touchscreen and everything else works without problems.
A couple of months ago I changed the front glass of a Samsung Galaxy S4 with all the necessary stuff, e.g. loca glue. For the first trial the result was acceptable. No reading the other threads:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3522863
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3592043
most of the posters don't recommend the replacement of the front glass. On ebay I can find both only the frontglass (about 10€) and the full suited display (about 135€). If I take an offer from china, the price would lower to 65€. Another option would be to send the phone to Oneplus and let those guys repair it.
Now the decisions I have to made:
Just buying the front glass: Would be an option, if it is the same difficulty like the Samsung phones. But I've found only one Youtube Tutorial. At 1:45 he puts something on the screen, but not sure if it's clue or just something to clean.
Buying a display from China: for about 65€ would be also ok. This can take up to 6 weeks of shipping. And in some forums I've read the quality should be much lower than the original parts from Oneplus. Does anyone have any experience about this?
Sending to Oneplus ist the last option. But this depends on the price. I opened a ticket and now I'm waiting for their offer.
What would you recommend? Has anybody changed the frontglass and can tell me about the success?

Open the ticket mate. No fuss. You'll get your device going in maximum 2 weeks. I tried replacing the glass myself and failed, I cracked the screen half way through...
Buying from eBay... Idk, but if people say they're not original, why Risk? Then again there's the struggle of doing it yourself.
The cheapest and safest is to send it to ONEPLUS.
Cheers

I have replaced hundreds of screens in devices and for the most part it is cheaper and far easier then anything else.
Im about to replace my USB port myself as soon as my tool kit gets here on Monday.
I would never send a device to the OEM to be fixed. It will cost you twice as much plus the time without a device is just stupid.
I have always trusted these people with all the stuff I need to repair. Never trust some random Youtube video.

What? It may suck to send your device away but why are you saying they charge you twice as much? That's misinformation. I sent mine and it only cost 80£ (labour and shipping included). Where can you buy an original display for 80 quid? Even the Knock offs from eBay cost more than that.

Yep! Not gonna pay $400 to repair a device that is literally $100 something on Ebay or Swappa, and I am definitely not going to pay $400 for a device that is guaranteed going to bootloop again in only a years time. So I spent $300 and bought a new OP3. Originally got the V10 because as someone coming from IOS, I automatically thought all Android phones could be unlocked and rooted with ease, with some o them sweet custom ROMs. This guy didn't do his research and ended up with using LG's, horrible, horrible (I cannot stress this enough) software. Not to mention the extra thick layer of AT&T bloat behind it. I don't really care about the hardware in a phone, as long as its good enough to have the software run good.

I hear you there. I had a g2 for a while. Then moved to the nexus but the 6 had issues dealing with the cold. So got the 1+3 for a steal from a dev. To be honest. I wanted to hate it because the CEO is an idiot. But other then some crappy BT issues when on a weak wifi connection. (licensing issues I'm sure) and the fact it won't work with my smart watch. I really can't complain about about.
I replaced my Motherboard and Battery by sending it to Oneplus. I do live in the EU so that could be a big difference. But a DHL driver picked it up on Monday. And I got it back the same week on Friday fully repaired without additional costs. A screen replacement here costs about €100 which is not expensive at all.. The problem mainly is that original parts are very rare and mostly fake.

Worth buying?

So I'm looking to buy the Snapdragon model of the S20 about £530 / $660 https://www.tecobuy.co.uk/en_UK/samsung-galaxy-s20-g9810-12gb-128gb-dual-sim-5g-cosmic-grey-4.html (not sure how reliable it they are)

Best phone I ever had.
Photo, phone quality, features.
Battery life is good, I have the Snapdragon.
You won't regret at this price.
Absolutely worth it at that price. I have the CDN version (G981W, snapdragon) and got it for $1650 CAD and love it, just wish I didn't have to pay so much for it.

It's bootloader locked ATM , so no cfw ... unfortunate but it is still a wicked phone
Even using Dex @ work I barely reach 10g ram usage. Dex alone was a selling feature for me. And it's actually usable now, compared to when it launched back on the s8
I recently switched from my iPhone XS Max and completely happy with this phone. No buyers remorse in any way.

Don't bother with tempered glass screen protectors unless you want to go with a Whitestone dome, the cheap ones are trash.
As for roms, there are none other than a GSI . And you need to have a non-NA snapdragon model that is bootloader unlockable.
Personally I don't miss root ..a few things, sure, but not enough to make me regret picking up this device

When did you order?
Let us know how it goes. I was tempted myself but the reviews scared me a little

So I'm looking to buy the Snapdragon model of the S20 about £530 / $660 https://www.tecobuy.co.uk/en_UK/samsung-galaxy-s20-g9810-12gb-128gb-dual-sim-5g-cosmic-grey-4.html (not sure how reliable it they are)
Is it still worth buying? Are there issues i.e. battery life, camera quality.

I know they are like £899, but I can have some peace of mind it's genuine, it will arrive and I can get it quickly.
Just not looking forward to transferring everything over
