[Q] Can't Find Google Talk App

Okay my phone was refreshed and I had to reinstall all my apps. I can't see google talk in the app marketplace. I also can't find it on appbrain.
I searched around for a while to try to figure out what was going on, but can't find much other information about it.
I doubt the app was pulled or i would have probably heard of it.
Can i get a QR code or link to the appstore or an APK or appbrain?

I wish I knew as well. I ended up reflashing my rom to get it back...

OP.... what you need to do is download a rom and extract it.
go into the folder " sytem" then "apps"
get the talk.apk our and either adb install it or put it on your SD card and use root explorer to move it to the system/apps folder on your phone.

hmmm why would I need to do this? was it pulled from the android marketplace for some reason? i'm just curious, i'm pretty sure I had to load it on my phone before from the marketplace.
i probably will just end up using another messaging client, because I don't really want to go through all that for an app I don't use very much.

It has been included in every ROM I've installed. Maybe find it in the gapps pack for Cyanogen?

I'm not even rooted... i'm not using a custom rom.. i'm just using the stock sprint issued evo.
I was having issues with the phone and they restored it to factory defaults which made me lose my apps. The last time i rooted was the intial unrevoked (which later was lost with an OTA update)

Cyanogen doesn't include a lot of these because they aren't allowed to be distributed by third parties and their team is good about sticking within the rules.
If something screwed up you should just factory reset the phone if you only want stock. Better yet, do a proper root and install whatever app you want

http://cyanogenmod-mirror.local.host.name/gapps/gapps-hdpi-20101025-signed.zip. Must be rooted to flash obviously. Do not know if this zip will work with Sense ROMs. It contains all Google apps (Market, Talk, Google Voice, etc.) Good luck. Not guaranteed that this will work. Use at own risk. Do a backup first.

ah i see my problem, i am an idiot. google talk IS preinstalled on the phone. i kept thinking i had to install it, couldnt find it in the market and gave up. i didn't even think to look in the app list on the phone....
that said, yea its about time that i did a proper root. ill have to read up a bit to be sure its easy enough- i have all the OTA updates, and htne ill go for it.

Let's build a FAQ here to help everyone get the full benefits of this outstanding ROM! Let's not make this into a discussion thread so that it makes everyone's search alot easier to find what they need. I'm starting this since there is no FAQ or WIKI in the OP.
I'll start first...
MMS FIX: clear cache for your messaging app (whatever you are using) under Settings >>> Applications >>>Manage Applications>>All. Reboot into recovery, clear cache, Dalvik cache, and finally reboot.

I already posted this in the general forum but this seems more fitting. I installed CM7 on my Evo earlier today. Everything was amazing until I realized that the market app wouldn't work. Within a second of me tapping the icon I was back at my home screen. I wiped all my caches and wiped+ reinstalled CM7 but still no luck. I've reverted to a backup ROM for now until I can get this sorted out. Any help would be awesome!

Issue:
Bad Front Facing Camera Pics "Dark"
Bad Video on any setting other than "High"
Tried Different kernels:
SavageZen 0.0.3, 0.0.4, 0.0.5 no luck

Issue: Titanium Backup does not successfully install when I attempt to update from the market. Think it might have something to do with the GPS, but I don't know...
Attempting workarounds, anyone know if I can use Root Explorer to remove it and then re-download?

I would like to share what I have learned over the last week. First off. AWESOME ROM. Great job!!!
I discovered after many hours that a backup with Clockworkmod 3.0.0.5 does not restore on my HTC EVO no matter how I do the backup (i.e. manual or using Rom Manager). Good news is that if you revert back to 2.5.0.7 when you do the backup (either method), I have success on restore. I did the GPS fix by reverting back to a prior image and using the ##GPS….# method and then restored my CM7 and I am happy to report GPS is working.. I did flash Savaged-Zen-V0.0.5-CFS-HAVS-NoSBC-WiMAX-GB-Signed to see if that would improve things. I did them together so I can’t be totally positive which one fixed it. I believe the combination works though. 4G also works which is good news. I do not see signal strength or the icon in the notification but the Wi-Fi shows it is 4G connected (does not say sprint though). It also is consistent in range with what I had with the Sense ROM.
I also just confirmed that the Wi-fi hotspot also works on 3G (no 4G in my hood). I connected my laptop and ipad without problems and connected to the internet.
I tried everything flashing / restoring, etc to get Sprint Voicemail to work. I gave up and downloaded a program called YouMail. So far, I am happy with it (works very similar to the Sprint product and it is free).
Camera appears to also be working. I will do more tests.
I will keep you posted on the things I learn over the next few weeks. I hope some of you find it helpful.
I will answer questions if I can. Thanks for the great ROM. I look forward to updates.

Issue: No Disk Mode after flashing tast kernel.
Fix: Use savage kernel. Make sure its a Gb wimax kernel.
Issue: No WiFi tethering (bluetooth and wifi tethering both broken). I won't work in 3 or 4g.

Tried that. Didn't work. Used Root Explorer to search for all Titanium backup files. Erased. Checked in /system/app nothing there as well. Checked in Applications list to see if it was there, it was. Can't seem to erase it completely off. Tried to redownload and reinstall from market. No go.

hey guys, for the mms fix, i can't seem to get that to work. mainly because the clear cache buttons are greyed out for the original messaging app and chompsms

You need to flash the proper Gapps for CM7. Do a google search for 'Gapps-GB' and you should find the download for it. Save it to your Sd-card and flash it using recovery. Hope this helps.

I am not sure what the problem is. Are you using the built in wi-fi tethering. I read somethere what the tethering app does not work.. I have had no problems with the build in wi-fi tethering. I ran my phone yesterday with GPS and some calls, text msg, etc and left it on overnight to see how it would do. I woke up and still had 38% after over 20 hours since last charged.

I am currently expierencing terrible wifi reception on my evo, also the data seems to go in and out of connection sometimes
also my mms is not working properly and I cannot seem to fix it, I have ran fix permissions in ROM Manager, Clear cache in settings, and reseting app data in Titanium... I dont want to wipe my phone (too many settings to mess with to get it back to how I like it ) but I am willing to if thats how it will get fixed...

Step by step to flash CM7 from stock without losing data

I did a lot of reading before I did this to be sure I wouldn't lose anything. Here's the step by step for others, since I was unable to find it all in one place. This is for the MT4G/Glacier, no idea if the process is similar on other phones. You should probably still read, but I couldn't find any of this all in one place:
If you flash, here's what you need:
- Rooted phone (if you need to root, search for the gfree method, it's the easiest)
- ROM Manager from the Market. Get the premium version.
- TitaniumBackup from the Market.
- Sync turned on for your contacts and calendars in your google account.
1. Go into TitaniumBackup, set the option to store the settings on the SDCard. Go into Backup/Restore, hit menu, and run the batch to do a full backup of system and user apps/data.
2. Go into ROM Manager. At the top, click the option to install ClockworkRecovery. Make sure it installs version 3.0.0.5. Then click the option to reboot into recovery mode. In recovery, make a ROM backup of your existing ROM. It will store on the SD card. Reboot back into the OS.
3. Go back into ROM Manager, scroll down to Download ROM's. You should see CM7 Nightlies in there. Download the latest build. It will ask you if you want to also download the GAPPS package, grab that also. When it's done, it will ask you what you want to do... just cancel. Go to reboot in recovery mode.
4. In recovery:
- Wipe/Factory Reset
- Clear cache partition
- Advanced -> clear Dalvik cache
- On main screen, install ZIP from SD
- Navigate to sdcard->clockworkmod->downloads->teamdouche and select the CM7 zip for your phone that was downloaded
- When that is done, install another zip from sd, go into the goo.inside.me directory and install GAPPS zip
- Reboot phone from main menu
5. Enter your gmail creds that you used for your primary account from before
6. Cancel the additional downloads thing when it pops up, this will pop up again later after you enable wireless
7. Go into ROM Manager, Select the Fix Permissions option, reboot (wifi won't work unless you do this)
8. Enable wifi and join to your network
9. Eventually you will get the popup again. Select the stuff that you want installed.
It will pull down all of your apps from the market and install them. If you want to restore user data for the apps, you can go into titanium and click on the app, and restore it with the data. Don't do this until it's done updating from the market. Do NOT restore system level stuff. You will cause problems if you restore system level stuff from 2.2 or earlier on 2.3.x.
You should also install SetCPU from the market, set to start on boot, set conservative mode, and create a screen off profile that limits to 368mhz/conservative. In advanced, leave the defaults, except change the cpu up threshold to 75, and the scaling percent to 11 or 12. Massive battery improvements. You can overclock with this also, mine is only overclocked to around 1100mhz. Some people are running 1800mhz. I heard smartass mode instead of conservative is also good, but haven't tried it.
Keep in mind that if you have an HTC phone with the Sense Framework, you won't have that anymore. So if you liked the Sense dialer (which I did), you can't get it. The stock dialer is functional, but not the best. DialerOne and Dialer2 look the most interesting, but they still aren't as good. If you have CSipSimple installed, remove it. CM7 has SIP built into it, and CSipSimple confuses the phone when trying to make calls. If you liked the Sense clock widget, you can get a replacement, search for Beautiful Widgets on the market. The built in camera app is not Sense either, but does all the same things. The Gallery is awesome, best gallery I've ever seen (stacks that you can pull apart and flip through, very cool).
If GPS doesn't work, download GPS Status from the market and use it to clear the A-GPS data and cache. It's the only app that can do it. It's free.
Also, if you want to go back to your previous ROM, you can flash back with the ROM Manager backup that you made. The only thing is, you'll have to downgrade the clockwork recovery bootloader to 2.5.1.2 first. You can do this by flashing a zip from your SD card. The zip is available somewhere on these forums. I don't have a link, but you can find it by searching a bit. The 3.0.0.5 version cannot flash a Froyo or earlier ROM for some reason. I'm not going back, so I haven't done this.
My TitaniumBackup realized somehow that I installed fresh, and it automatically restored my apps and data. It did NOT on my friend's phone. But, he has the free version and I have the paid one. If it doesn't restore your app settings, you can manually go in and do it. One thing that I've never been able to restore is Good corporate email. It restores, but it won't send or receive. If anyone has ideas on this, post them.
Note that I flashed with build 35, and it's been rock solid. Your mileage may vary. If you already have the software noted above, the whole process only takes about 5-10 mins.
Edit: Recovery 3.0.0.6 was released, and works with 2.2 and 2.3. So you wouldn't have to downgrade the recovery to go back a version. As of this edit, you can grab it here if it's not showing up in ROM Manager yet: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952433

Something to add... if you are using ADW or LPP do a backup if those also. I find that if you install it fresh from the market and not TB then press restore settings in their preferences it will load all the custom icons and custom dock. It saves alot of time. Nice writup for the peeps that need the pointers for a fresh and fast install of a nightly

FYI, Titanium backup works great at restoring apps. I would be weary of restoring data between android versions however, because some of the data will be of a different type and could cause lots of issues. Thats the reason for the full data wipe before flashing in the first place.

I thought that was mostly because of system. The apps themselves still store their data in sqlite databases, and their schema should not change between versions of the actual OS. I might be wrong.

app data is fine, system data is what causes issues. I should have been more specific.

The only system stuff I install is the accounts back up, email data, wifi access points, and account and sync settings. I usually dont have a problem installing this kind of stuff. I had a few problems in the past restoring some system stuff and it made things not work, a lot of force closes. etc.. I would open up say the sound settings in settings and it would never open it would fc 100% of the time. You know I bet a lot of the issues people have with stuff not working when other's have no problems are due to bad restores. I have not once in any of the builds(since 26 when I started flashing CM 7) had an issue with wifi or gps(knock on wood)

But the market automatically downloads all your apps for you. last time i did a full wipe i only used TB to restore data only, since the apps had been installed automatically from market.

You can use My Backup Pro to back up your SMS and MMS, plus bookmarks and a few other things. Very useful if you want to wipe and save your text.

You can also use My Backup Root (free in market) It is the same as My Backup pro but it is free.

Ok so I just barely rooted and flashed cm7 #40 to my glacier. Everthing is great. I love the rom. I just need help on 2 things. First, how do I get my contacts to sync back to my phone? I had done a factory reset twice before and they always synced back after I logged in my gmail account but not this time. I did sync my gmail before rooting and flashing and I also backed everything up with titanium backup but nothing. Second, when I first flashed the cm7 #40 rom I liked how when I locked the screen it shut off like if you were turning off a tv. I don't know what I did that it does not do it anymore. If anyone knows hows to fix my 2 problems I greatly appriciate it. Thanx.
EDIT: I figured out how to get the screen off animation back but I still have problems getting my contacts to push back to my phone. If anyone knows how to get them to sync it would be helpful.
EDIT#2: Figured out how to get contacts back. Was not able to sync them but just went to the tmo website, wrote them down and re-added them to my phone.

I have rooted and upgraded to cm7. I have followed all directions, however, i do not have android market or any google apps reinstalled on the phone. Something got messed up during the upgrade, anyone got any ideas how i can install android market back on my phone? This is a big issue for me, i can not even get back into my titanium backup. How do i recover it from sd card? PLEASE HELP!!!! Stressing big time over this!! Also, when i try to set up my account to sync the contacts its asking for a domain name, i assume its for gmail, how do i find it? Any examples or ideas? I lost a grip of contacts, over 200! Please help!!! Thank you!

Did you install the GAPPS zip that came with the rom? if you didn't, do. Its the google apps file. That will load the market and apps.

wiped, re-flashed the rom and re-boot. it was the only way i was able to get the animation back.

I'm curious if there's a way to batch-restore data only in Titanium Backup? Only way I can see is to do it app by app.
Likewise, any way to batch-backup data only?

CM7 Final - Many Force closes from Launcher Pro

Hi, I'm running cm7.0 stable and I used titanium backup to restore my apps+data when I flashed this rom. I am continuing to get force closes quite often. I did uninstall and reinstall launcher pro once to see if that would help and it didn't help. I was running WidgetLocker homescreen and disabled that for a bit and it didn't happen as often. Is there anything I can do to correct this? I had read somewhere when installing a fresh rom to not restore data or possibly even apps? If I flash cm7 again over my current one will all apps and settings stay untouched?
I also just read about cm7.0.2.1, should I download this? I do eventually want to step forward as stable releases come out. Will I have to wipe anything again and if I were to download and install the rom through rom manager would all my apps and settings stay untouched?
I noticed Rom Manager also has an updates feature for premium users, is this the nightly updates and not the stable versions? Or is it the same as the stable versions but just updates it rather than flashing the entire rom? Thanks in advance for any help received here!

I was having this same problem earlier today. When restoring with Titanium Backup, you can't use the batch feature to restore any apps...you're going to have to go to the Backup/Restore tab and restore each app you want individually. For some reason the release can't handle the data (which I suppose makes sense because of all the irrelevant system files). (So don't worry about LauncherPro or WidgetLocker, they're not causing the problem.)
To fix it, you're going to need to reflash the ROM (or recover a backup if you made one before you recovered your apps through TB), and then when you want your apps, what you'll end up doing is going into TB, hitting the Backup/Restore tab, and go through the list of apps >> find one you want to restore and click/touch it >> hit "Restore" >> hit "App only".
Also, I would download 7.0.2.1 -- it's the latest release, and as far as I know, it is extremely stable. If you're unsure about certain releases, ROM Manager does have a comment/rating section with each release, and you can get a good idea as to how stable it is there.
I'm not too sure about the ROM Manager/updating question, though, and would be interested in hearing the answer, as well.
Let us know if you have any more questions!

Each rom is different so if your trying to restore system apps from one rom to another it usually will not work especially if your going from say a sense rom to gingerbread. Uninstall the apps that fc and try just restoring the app minus data.. good luck
As long as your using a rom manager supported rom it knows what rom your using and will give you updates for your rom 7.0.2.1 just fixes camera and is stated stable nand first and if you update w/o wipe and it messes with anything just restore and wipe before update

I have a feeling that its more of a permissions issue. Running Titanium backup and restoring your apps is not a problem at all. run the batch then select restore all apps with data. Once the list of apps comes up make sure the radio button that says "App only" is the one that is selected. If you restore the data that could cause issues.

I forgot to mention I did fix permissions with Root Tools. Anyone know about ROM manager and how it updates. If I go to 7.0.2.1 and there is a 7.3 does it install over the last one? And the update feature for Premium Users only to get access to the nightlys?

Yes it does install over the other one and you can keep all of your existing data without having to restore it. I'd suggest not using ROM manager, but I do believe the nightlies are for premium users in ROM manager.

Thanks for the help guys. I am going to install cm7.0.2.1 very soon and restore only apps without the data. It's a pain because I have so many! But I'll do it right this time. One last question, the google apps zip (gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip) I used to install after cm7.0 stable, can I use the same one for the new version? Or did something change?

Thanks everyone for the help! I wiped my phone and successfully installed the new version of cm7 yesterday. I manually installed all of my apps again and got it setup and configured once again without any issues or force closes. My phone is running very smooth now!

I get the same thing sometimes on my phone. Launcher pro is force closing because its waiting on the sd card to finish mounting. In gingerbread it takes a hell of a long time for the sd card to mount, just let your phone sit for a min or two and you shouldn't have any problems. Also if you hit wait instead of force close it'll start working right after. No need to reflash the rom or anything else.

New Tab S 10.5 Owner! Need Help/Suggestions

I just ordered this beautiful tablet. I've never owned a tablet before. I've actually always wanted a laptop, but things are changing. I have an Amazon Kindle Fire HD from many years ago. It's actually worked pretty well for me for ebook reading, limited web browsing and email using. But, the last few months it's really started acting funny and not working right. So I've decided it's time to upgrade. Did a week's worth of research and decided this is my best option. I haven't received it yet, but I'm really excited to dig in and do a lot more than I can with my Kindle.
So that brings me here. I don't remember where, but through my research on which tablet to buy, this website was mentioned as a major resource. To be completely honest, I'm 100% lost. There are things I want to do but I don't even know where to start. I love tinkering and figuring things out, but I need a little push in the right direction.
One of the biggest things I want to be able to do is make a complete low level backup of the entire system to store on my home server should anything happen and I need to restore it.
The other big thing I want to do is remove all the excess junk that comes pre-installed that I'll never use. With such a small area of space available, having half or so used up in unnecessary stuff is just pointless.
I'm sure there are other things I can do and may want to do in the future, but for now, these are the major keys. So... any help? Did I make the right choice? What other features/functions should I be looking at or considering?

Root with chain fire root, flash via Odin.
This will allow you to have root access allowing you to remove unwanted app amongst other things
Flash via Odin: TWRP Recovery for Chagallwifi (assuming it's a Samsung T800)
This will allow you to create a back up.
I believe the order of this can be inverted. IE. Flash recovery with Odin and then have TWRP flash the CFAutoroot zip and the SuperSU (the app that will "manage" your root)
Install Titanium Back up and freeze/uninstall unwanted apps. There are lists of removable apps on the forums. I prefer to freeze but it's up to you.

Thanks, that's somewhat helpful. At least it give me the names of programs. I have no idea what I'm doing though. Can you give me a link to a step-by-step guide, or at least explain what the different things are and what they do? Sorry for being such a noob with this.

Instructions
MAKE SURE TO DOWNLOAD THE FILES FOR YOUR SPECIFIC DEVICE (T700, T705, T800, T805, etc.)
You will need Odin (This is the software that will allow you to install the root and other files [FLASHING])
CF-AutoRoot (Will provide Root access for your device): You will be flashing this with Odin
Optional: Install custom recovery TWRP. This is also done with Odin. This will allow you to make backups and flash .zip files, including custom roms, apps, etc.
Just google for guides on rooting Samsung Galaxy Tab S. They will show you step by step on how to do the Odin flashing, PDA, settings, autoreset or not, etc.
I recommend backing up your device at this point. Reboot into recovery (instructions will be in the rooting guides), go to backup and backup everything for now. In the future when you feel comfortable enough that you can/will select to only backup what you deem necessary.
Your device is now rooted, the first boot after installing CFAutoRoot will take awhile +/-3 - 5 minutes.
Now download Titanium Backup, and you can google or search XDA for a list of "safe" things to uninstall. Just go into TitaniumBackup and look for the app you want to Freeze (This will prevent the app from running but it will NOT delete it, thus it will still take up space) or Remove.
Busybox: Will be required by certain apps.
Optional:
Link2SD App, this allows you to install/move/link your apps to the SD Card, it essentially frees up your internal memory of the device and tricks the device into installing apps and their data files onto your second partition of your External SD Card (Google or Search XDA for guides on Link2SD). This will allow you to install a lot more apps than you normally would be able to. (Example: Vice City, San Andreas, Plants vs Zombies, etc. I mention these because of their large data size). Not all apps will work when linked, just trial and error. I can't seem to get Word, Excel, Powerpoint linked to my SD Card without at least one of the failing, same with Facebook. You will have to test each app and see what files you can link/bind and which you can't.
Adblock Plus: Self explanatory
Xposed: A bunch of customization options for your device
ES File Explorer Pro: The best file management/directory app IMO
Greenify: Battery saver
Aptoide: Secondary App Store
Hancom Apps: I feel these work better on occasion then the Microsoft Office apps (Example large excel files with multiple formulas and filters)
NovaLauncher: Custom launcher, a lot more customizations then TouchWiz will provide you. (Your home screen)
Tasker: Limitless possibilities with this app (Search google/XDA for info)
TWRP Manager: TWRP Recovery app.
VLC: Video player
4way_multiwindow: This will allow you to have 4 apps open at a time and 3 apps "minimized", this also allows floating windows (Moveable apps running in "windowed mode" essentially.) There is an aesthetic bug when minimized, I have not found a fixed version of this yet, maybe others can provide link. Just load up TWRP manager and choose install, and select the .zip file and it will reboot into recovery and install the file for you. Or you can boot your device into recovery and install it the same way. I am attaching the .zip file.
If you are happy with your device up to this point, I would create another backup after you are done with the initial set up and have installed the apps of your choosing. Save a copy on the device, PC, NAS, etc. just in case you lose one of your copies. Some TWRP versions do not allow you to backup directly to the external SD Card, you may have to backup into the Internal and then transfer the information over to the external SD Card.

Doesn't installing Chain Fire Root via the previous link also contain the TWRP Recovery? Or is this a special version I need to install after running the first root through Odin? What is Chagallwifi?

This is just an app I get from the Google Play store right? Or is there a special version I need to get, or install manually? I think I saw in a YouTube video that I need to install something called GApps if I want install something from there after rooting, is this correct? Also, if Titanium Backup IS an app, how can I get a backup of the entire system when I'm booted into the OS? I think I read somewhere, or saw screenshots that show this basically creates backups of your installed programs, so you can easily restore them without having to re-download them. Maybe I'm wrong, as I said I'm completely new this and probably don't know what I'm talking about.
My biggest concern is that I'll screw something up and find myself with a tablet I can't use, without having had it no more than a couple days, and having spent nearly $600 for it and the accessories. I know that rooting/etc voids the warranty, but I also have seen where people are able to put the whole system back to factory default for repairs, etc. That sounds like something I really need to learn how to do and be confident I can do should something happen.

This link works, although there are newer versions of TWRP, you can install these after however, no big deal.

The previous link contains TWRP, read above. The normal CF Autoroot comes with CWM Recovery I believe (A custom recovery similar to TWRP). You can use the link you posted. Chagallwifi is the "nickname" of the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 WiFi, it is one way to search for a device, the other being the model number T800, for instance or the long commercial name.

You get the app from the playstore, correct. I am not sure about GApps, I want to say it isn't necessary unless you will be installing a custom rom (you can double check this on the rooting guides, if it asks for GApps, then flash the GApps)
The system back up is done via TWRP or CWM, boot into recovery and choose backup.
Titanium Backup allows you to back up the app and its data file. So you don't lose the progress of your games. Also backs up email, WiFi passwords, etc.

Most of the errors cause soft bricks, you can recover from these. I would recommend you backup after rooting, in case you mess something up toying with Titanium, Link2SD, SuperSU, etc. You can always use SamMobile and find a Stock Rom to flash back onto the device, again via Odin. Not sure if the KnoxTrip flag will still show up, you can trying Googling how to root without tripping Knox, I know there are methods, however I have never used them. I have soft bricked my device before, I deleted everything with TWRP, I wanted to factory reset, and I selected erase System..... scary times.

Thanks for all your help and advice. I just got my tablet today. Still kinda playing around with it. I probably won't do anything for a couple of days. At least till my next day off from work (Thursday) so I can concentrate on what I'm doing. I was really scared when I first turned it on, everything was in Korean. I had to find a YouTube video showing how to go through the initial setup to change the language. All good now. Once I got it fully running, it downloaded a 350mb update and rebooted. I'm now running Lolipop 5.0.2. Is that going to cause any issues? Also, I can now confirm that it is model SM-T800.

ChewVodka, once your past the learning curve rooting etc. can be done in your sleep. After some research, I rooted a 10.1 tab 4 a while back with no problem. Definitely better o have more control over the device, I think. Just got a new 10.5 also, and am looking around for the best way to administer the Android system - the Galaxy Tab S for Dummies book seems to me to be actually a good place to start. I'll check back here with any choice info I find on the 10.5.
Also, I have this case for my 10.1, and this is the best under $20 case you can get for the 10.5 - so cheap I bought two of them! Type in search: Xtra-Funky Exclusive Samsung Galaxy Tab S, 10.5 -- the black and navy blue are cool -- the others kinda garish.

Easy Way, allow installation of 3rd party apps in settings download this for android https://kingroot.net/ run it select install anyway when you get the pop up, and root device , open Playstore download flashify for root users, run it allow it access , click recovery image then download twrp choose the 3.0.2-0 release and install to your tab and reboot into recovery, at this point you can use it to make a backup of your current rom or install a custom rom (following the directions on the page for the rom that you choose), this is easier method if you aren't familiar with odin and don't have the drivers and all set up on pc. You can also change kingroot over to super user in a few different ways can download and use supersume from play store and run it or, just flash the newest superuser in twrp and remove whats leftover from kingroot manually after reboot. If you intend on doing a custom rom i suggest choosing first and having all files available before you start. However if you intend on using odin You might want to install this first http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790 so you have full communication with the device in case anything does go wrong there will be other options. This is of course if you are not already setup with this already. Also I would like to note there are a few roms here based on the stock firmware if you like it just look through the forum see what you like, and read everything.

What are the benefits to a custom ROM? I assume you're talking about things like Cyanogenmod. There are some people in another forum I visit that like it, but I don't know what it is or why I would want it. Does it allow installing pirated software or something? It's probably not allowed to be discussed here, and I'm not saying I would purposely do something like that (not that I wouldn't if possible lol). It all comes down to the fact that I'm completely new to the tablet world, other than the fact that it's a bigger and better Kindle Fire that I can get more usage out of by not being limited to Amazon's ROM and store for apps. The biggest things I'm looking to do is get rid of bloatware that came preinstalled (of which a lot was added with the update) and the ability to make backups of the entire system should something screw up.
It sounds like "rooting" is essentially giving you the administrative control access to the system (like in Windows) instead of being limited to a generic "user". That allows you to install more system accessible programs, where a generic user would get a UAC prompt and then be told and Administrator needs to preform that action. As for "recovery", it sounds like that is sort of like the CMOS/BIOS of a PC. It's the first "program" that runs when you boot up (even requiring a specific keypress to enter). This allows you to access the system before the system boots, to get you backup/restore functions, and the ability to install new OS's. It also sounds like the built in version from Samsung is what is getting changed (like updating the BIOS of the PC) to allow more functionality (like backups, etc). The only thing you don't have access to is stuff like disk drives, but things like RAM and CPU can be adjusted once you have ROOT.
The more I learn about it, the more I'm eager to do it. I really don't like feeling confined to a predetermined set of available things to do, and I really don't like having somebody decide to install software I'll never use on my system that just takes up space. I especially hate that said programs can't even be uninstalled. Looks like this is what I'm gonna have to do!

Decided not to wait and rooted it tonight. I have the freedom now to play, though I'm not sure where to start. Currently I have the CF-Autoroot thing done, and it installed SuperSU. Then I did the TWRP recovery, and made a backup of all the partitions. I was kinda hoping I could backup remotely (like on the computer) rather than stored on the same device. I have a microSD card ordered and on the way, so my next task will be to back up to that. There is a tool I use on my Kindle Fire called ES File Explorer. I'll see if I can get that on this. Then I can find the backup and transfer it over the wifi.

Now I'm having a bunch of trouble. I was able to get the Chainfire root to go through, and verified it with a Root Checker. I then installed the TWRP recovery so I could make a backup. I even have a few backups. Then I went and installed an app called TWRP Manager, that was supposed to enable me the option of making backups LIVE (without having to boot into TWRP). It wasn't working, so I went to do a "Classic Backup" which reboots into TWRP and starts the backup then reboots normally. Well, TWRP never booted. I just had a black screen. Nothing seemed to work. I couldn't power on with the power button, and I couldn't manually boot into TWRP. The only option that did anything was ODIN (Download) Mode. I'm really freaking out at this point. I found a way to connect to XDA's IRC Channel and talked with some really nice guys and was told to try re-flashing the stock. I did that, and it worked. But now I'm stuck again. Basically starting from scratch with a stock system, I went through to install the Chainfire root again. It seemed to work ok, and SuperSU showed up. Ran the Root Verifier and it confirmed it was successful. I then went to flash TWRP. ODIN says it passed, but I still can't boot into it. Here's the kicker.. even if it appears that it's not working, if I do the keypresses on my tablet correctly and wait like 2-3 minutes then try again, TWRP will actually be up but the screen locked. WTF??
So did I something wrong? I'm really lost. Like I told the guys in the chatroom, I'm going on blind faith here, not really knowing what I'm doing. I figured once I have stock installed, I'm basically back to square one and can go through the whole process again. Doesn't seem to be working. I have to go to work now but hopefully somebody has something of a suggestion I can try by the time I get home.

Before I try this myself and bootloop, would I be safe flashing the 4way multiwindow on the new stock 6.0.1 ROM? (SM-T805)
