[Q] Proper way to flash ROM + Kernel? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm looking to flash a new ROM+Kernel to my phone. I wanted to flash MIUI and Tiamat's new kernel but am unsure of the proper procedure. I've only ever flashed ROMs.
Do I wipe everything, flash kernel, flash ROM and then reboot? Are there any issues I should be aware of first?
Thanks.

Wipe data/dalvik, flash rom, boot, boot back to recovery and flash kernel.

Flashing a Kernel

Yesterday I installed a ROM for the first time. Today I would like to try a different Kernel. How do I just install JUST the kernel ?

Kernels are flashed same way you flashed the ROM. Put it on your SD card, boot into recovery, wipe cache and dalvix x2, and install from SD card.
will i have to install the rom also all over again ?
No. You wont have to reinstall the ROM.

perhaps this will be of help. this is for CM6, but the steps are the same for Sense ROMs.

Make sure that if u have a sense rom, u have a sense kernel.. if u ever get bootloops just reflash the rom and the kernel will be replaced

You wiped cache and dalvik, then flashed?
Yes, always end up in a bootloop

Try this:
-boot into your rom, backup all your apps, home screen, ect
-boot into recovery, do a complete wipe, flash your rom, boot into the rom
-boot back into recovery, wipe cache, dalvik, then flash kernel, reboot.
You're also flashing an aosp kernel for an aosp rom, and sense kernel on sense rom, not mixing them?
There's one time I manage to flash taimat sbc on sense the only problem it made graphic flickering so I restore back to stock kernel. The was it after that i can't even flash any kernel.

That's your problem right there. Tiamat is an AOSP kernel and you're flashing in on a SENSE rom; its not gona work. If you want to you use Tiamat, you need to be on an AOSP rom, like CM7, Evervol, Salvage Mod, ect. For Sense, try the netarchy kernels.
Netarchy tried that too same problem.

Have you tried flashing a new rom? I believe you tried a factory reset already?
This epic reply brought to you by none other than my roxx'd out Evo.

What recovery are you using? It sounds like something isn't getting properly wiped. When you flashed to a new rom, did you happen to try using Calkulin's Format all.zip? It certainly wouldn't hurt. Then get the new rom flashed and booted, then try wiping cache and dalvik cache again, then reflash your kernel. What kernel are you trying to use and on which rom? Perhaps the kernel has major undervolting and you're phone doesn't agree with it, which is not uncommon. There are options with netarchy kernels to use more, less, or no undervolting. With aosp kernels, there are some scripts you can use to change/alter the undervolting, to adjust it to where your phone is stable. So I guess that it's either because something isn't wiping properly, or because your phone doesn't like to be undervolted, or doesn't play nice with HAVS.

So I flashed a ROM...and things seem to be running fine now.

...and after the ROM, I flashed the radio, not sure if it was the proper order, but it works.
Now, if I want to flash a kernel, should I do it first, then re-flash the ROM?
Or would flashing it now be fine?
Thanks.
You can flash it now, just run Darkside Cache Wipe after and then reboot.

This. If you flash a kernel and then a rom, the kernel in the rom will overwrite the kernel you just flashed. Rom first, then kernel.

Twrp recovery help?????

Do you flash the twrp file right after you flash the cm10.1 rom or do you let it boot first then flash it after first boot

You should always let a ROM "settle" before flashing any custom recovery, mods, tweaks, etc. So yes, let it boot fully before flashing your custom kernel.

[Q] How do I get CWM and an AOSP rom on my phone(Boost Galaxy S2)?

So on my screenshot it says the modem and kernel I'm using. I rooted my phone with framaroot and agats recovery came with it. I want to flash either cyanogenmod 10.1 or jellybam. I'm a noob to all this though and I would like to know what you recommend for me to do to get clockworkmod recovery and what modem to use to be able to flash an AOSP rom.

I sent you a reply in pm, asking what Rom you wanted to flash. AOSP roms use ics modem unless it says specifically in the op to use something different. You already have cwm on your phone with Garwynn's kernel. However, I recommend flashing a safe kernel with cwm(el26) either using Odin or Mobile Odin. You can also download the zip version, reboot into recovery, and flash it worth Garwynn's, because he has Agat's recovery(cwm). If you do it this way, just reboot into recovery after and you'll be on el26 kernel. Wipe everything, flash your rom, modem, reboot, enjoy!

I sent you a pm with the rom I want. Idon't thnk iit's AOSP. It's this one: http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-...-1-2013-overclocking-general-awesomeness.html
Should I just download the zip and flash it on the recovery I have or are there extra steps. Do I need another modem?

Hmmm...I have never heard of this rom, but of course I do not really go outside XDA to flash. But from what it looks like, it is simply a stock VM rom, with some goodies baked in. And if you are running gb28 modem, that's all you need. And you can try flashing this with Agat's recovery(Garwynn's kernel), but I think the op says that as well. But here's what I would do. Since the recovery link is sxtp's site, and it actually says e4gt in the name, then you should be ok flashing with what you have. Let me know how it goes!

I changed my mind about that rom, it's a virgin mobile rom so it seems too complicated lol. Could you guide me on how I can put something like cm 10 or jellybam on my phone?
Lol....here's CM:

Awesome! Good job. WFTN is a great Rom too. Enjoy! Read his thread if you have any issues. Chances are someone's had them before you, if any
