[Q] HELP! Problem flashing OC kernel - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I am running a permanently rooted G2 with the stock rom post the 11/03 update.
I'd like to keep my stock rom - but I want to flash a new over-clocking kernel in order to overclock the processor using SetCPU. When I attempted to flash the Pershoot Kernel for Froyo in ROM Manager, I ran into a boot loop after flashing, which I recovered from with clockworkmod.
Any advice as to how I can flash a working over-clocking kernel onto my stock rom? Did I do incorrectly use ROM Manager for flashing that kernel?
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated! You guys rock!
Thanks,
captainreynolds (Yes, from Firefly & Serenity )

*Bump*
Anyone? Really could use some help here. I tried using coolbho3's temporary flash (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=813681), and it worked a few times, but now when I try and set it to 1420 Mhz, the phone freezes up.
He mentions that
If there's ever an OTA or if you flash a custom kernel, you'll need a recompiled version of the kernel module, and with different addresses. Any kernel dev can easily do this using the documentation below.

Please help! Thank you!

baconbits is probably the most popular overclocking kernel for stock roms.
give it a shot!

I'll try it out right now! Thanks for your help - also, I've read some of your help to others in other threads that has helped me - thanks for that too! haha
UPDATE:
Worked like a charm. No issues so far. Thanks for the help mate!

you bet just good lookin' out for my android bros.

Hey how's it going? I just perm rooted my g2 as well. I want to keep my stock rom like you and just over clock it. Thanks to your question and pmcqueen's answer I'll try baconbits's kernel too. What speeds are you getting? And any difference with battery life?
Thank you both!

rzm007,
I tried baconbits, but I ran into some flickering issues when I tried to turn off the screen - flickering issues so bad the screen wouldn't turn off.
So, I tried flashing Pershoot's latest kernel - and now I have no problems! And, I can overclock to 1.5 gHz. Awesome. The link to Pershoot's thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=847672.
I had boot looping problems when I tried to flash Pershoot's Kernel using ROM Manager. I flashed it manually in ClockworkMod Recovery.
Happy with it so far - and Pershoot is continually refreshing it. Cool stuff.
ALSO. I love Android. And XDA. Bought the XDA app today: good investment.

captainreynolds,
Appreciate the update on your status and link! I haven't had any issues yet with bacon bits. I'm using cpu tuner off the market as well.
Let me know if pershoot continues to work out for you. Good luck!
I'm thinking about flashing a rom that's as close to stock 2.3 as possible too. Need to do some more reading first.
(yup, I'm really lovin' xda and the android community)

What radio are you on - latest or the .9 or .7, and, are you using the kernel in Lou's ROM, or something other? If a different (non-stock) kernel, maybe try the stock one found in the Virtuous section or ROM manager. Radio is self-explanatory - there's a fine radio thread here on XDA.
Please post results/issues in the fix so others may benefit from your experience.
I would try something like Virtuous ROM and see if it works okay. His ROM is rock solid.

Agree w/ ejdavis' guidance - also check which version of the radio you are running.
The Virtuous ROM uses the stock kernel too.

Look for and follow the very good Radio thread here on XDA - following it as directed should not brick your device. The only way to know whether this solves your problem, or eliminates the radio from the list of issue candidates, is to flash it.

[Q] Kernel flashing question...

Hi,
I'm using LeeDrOiD's HD 1.5.1 ROM (and loving it!!)
Last night I flashed the Buzz OC/UV 1.51GHz kernel to play around with overclock and see what my device could do. (no problems there)
Now I would like to restore the LeeDrOiD kernel.
So, my questions are:
Is the "LeeDrOiD V1.3 custom Kernel for Non Leedroid users - 30/01/11"
(found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842802)
the same as the kernel in Lee's ROM?
If it is, can I just download it and flash it through recovery to overwrite Buzz kernel?
Thanks
You can use that kernel and shouldn't run into any problems
Running CM8 aka Meringue, From the Future lol DHD
Hey Thanks,
1 more question (sorry)..
If I restore a Nandroid backup (via clockworkmod recovery), will that also restore the kernel?
Thankyou for your patience
--------edit---------
Nevermind... I just went for it !
For anyone with the same/similar question to mine:
This does restore kernel too. (But you probebly already knew that)
I'm such a newb to all this
It's a good question, and thanks for answering it, as it piqued my interest as well.
Now we know, kernel is restored. I would have guessed at yes as Nandroid is like taking a disk image of your phone.
Or you can reflash the rom but you lose any themes or any mods that you might of flashed
Running CM8 aka Meringue, From the Future lol DHD
Thanx for the info

Is there a changelog available somewhere?
Btw, I too noticed one small issue with smartass2. Maybe it's the same as the one you found?
When playing music, I noticed a fair amount of skipping when the screen switches off. I initially thought it was the player, the dsp manager, etc. Finally, I came to the conclusion that the governor was the issue. Using CPUSpy, I found smartass2 scaled the cpu to 320MHz when playing music with the screen off. When I changed the minimum CPU speed to 400MHz, the skipping went away.
Was this the issue that you noticed or is this isolated to my phone?
Edit: Will try out your kernel and see if that issue persists. And test the kernel
Flashed the kernel. Doesn't seem to fix this particular issue. If you could somehow implement a fix for this particular issue, it woulde be great!
Will continue testing and let you know how it goes.
Just reporting, one thing I noticed is that 3 of my apps were broken after flashing the new kernel but reinstalling them brought them back to the original state.
new test kernel will be up soon i updated the cpu govenors and add a few more for users to test to see what should stay and what should be removed
quick q: will nightlys be available through rom manager update?
Accelerometer
Hi! Im testing your kernel right now, will post results later.
I have a slightly offtopic question but it's a kernel question.
I have myself a T-mobile Wildfire S wich uses a different hardware form the European Version, the only problem with it is that the accelrometer doesn't work with custom Roms (I've red Alquez said it's a kernel problem).
I wanted to ask you for any tips to star fixing it, I have programming and linux experience but I wouldn't know where to start. Any ideas?
Thanks again, keep up the good work!
does this works with any ROM or only with cm7 rom?

Also, do you recommend using a swap partition?
yes it includes the qualcomm hw3d acceleration

[Q] What kernel for my SGS3?

Ok so Im a little new to this hole rooting and flashing stuff and I've been reading around that the Ktoonsez KT747 Kernel has amazing battery life, even if you OC. So with this being said, im currently running SlimBean 2.7 but it doesn't say anywhere if it will support this kernel. Also can't find on Ktoonsez thread either. Maybe its me im blind when it comes to finding stuff. Thanks for help! If its necessary, I wouldnt mind flashing the CM10 M2.

Well i just loaded the jellybean 10.9.2012 and it wouldn't boot like it should so ima try a different one if i can get it to boot
[FIXED] I flashed the wrong one i did the one said above instead of the one that had the att in the name of the kernel, so its flashed and booted so i will get back with you to tell you how it goes.
[WORKS] It works like a charm thanks for all of the help.
Try this kernel http://goo.im/devs/imoseyon/d2att/lk_aosp_jb_tmo-v1.4.zip
It's imoseyons kernel. He is an amazing dev. I only use this. I have used ktoonez idk why I don't use it all the time. It says this kernel is for tmo the but trust me it works the same. He is a modified version of interactive designed for the s3. I get EXTREMELY great battery life. Go over to original dev thread over in the tmobile thread and look for lean kernel.
Use the kernel I included only if your on a jelly Bean rom.
Transmitted from my GALAXYSIII running Jelly Bean. XDA premium
KT747 can be found HERE, in the Original Development forum. There are variants of the kernel that will work for several current versions of Android.

Stock AT&T Kernel - includes root and the default BT and WIFI drivers....just in case . Alternatively, you can simply backup the /system/lib/modules folder which contains these drivers.

[Q] Can't flash KT747 kernel on Slim Bean Rom?

I'm running Slim Bean 3.1.0 on my SGS3. Recently, I've been trying to flash the AGAT and KT747 kernels on my phone, but with no success.
I've tried flashing kernel, wipe cache/dalvik, rebooting, and then installing the Slim Rom file over it.
Anyone have an idea what I'm doing wrong?

98% Sure you are trying to mix an AOSP based ROM with a TW (Stock) type Kernel. That doesn't typically work. There is an option for the AOSP version of Ktoonsez kernel though that _should_ be a better fit with that ROM.
Have fun and continue to read up *Grin*
The thing is, I'm almost positive I downloaded the AOSP version for the KT747 kernel

That's a good start, the AGAT says LJ7 based in the Post, leading one to believe it is for TW ROMS. And on the Ktoonsez it does have a download link for either TW or AOSP. One you are looking for should be named "KT747-Kernel-AOSP-JB-SPR-12-11-2012.zip". Verify that and speak up again if you are still having issues.
Yes, I'm certain that was the file I flashed, because I remembered noting that the file was 7.72MB prior to downloading.
Also, I'm sure that the Slim Rom is compatible with the KT747 kernel because several posts were made on the thread saying that
the battery life was amazing, which made me wonder if I was doing something wrong.

Reading your original post, The order should go 1) ROM then 2) Kernel ... Then Wiping Cache and Dalvik-Cache (And other wipes if needed). Reason for this is if you flash the Kernel first, then the Rom you are over writing the custom Kernel with whatever is packaged with the ROM.
That is the only other obvious thing I see at this point. Hope that helps..

See that now, thanks and sorry for the inconvenience.
Please report back on how you like it, and if you really notice any differences.
It dropped 1% in approximately 30 minutes, half of the time the screen was just on, other half I left it on my desk (all while connected to Wifi).
My settings are 96/1998 on ktoonservative.
In my opinion, so far its amazing as compared to other AOSP roms I've tried.
