[Q] Unlocking without power button? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Would it ever be possible to unlock or wake the phone up without pressing the power button? I think it may be impossible because the touch sensitivity turns off when the screen is off. Unless there is an app for the volume button to act as a "wake up".

what i did was: disableed auto-lock with "no lock" app and installed "lockbot" for a custom lockscreen...
so, i can 'wake' the phone with volume controls, because in the end, it was not locked at all...
regards!

That's a good idea. I'll give it a try tomorrow. Thanks!
Would still like to hear any other suggestions too.

You can use widgetlocker or tap tap app
widget locker has options to wake the screen using volume buttons and add custom widgets to the lockscreen.
tap tap app uses the proximity senser if you tap or swipe your finger twice across the sensor the screen will awake but sometimes this app can be a battery drainer due to the sensore being awake all the time.

My only concern is "- Optional Easy Wake Mode, allows all hardware buttons to wake, rather than just the power button (Does not work on all phones"

i'll try widget locker, but i need to say, in my test i noticed that was not so good; really battery drainer, and work when it wants, should be called as: tap tap tap tap tap! =o)
the main benefit of staying with no lock screen is kill that weird screen "slide to answer/deny" from sense... that thing makes my life miserable, i ALWAYS deny when i'm trying get my phone out of the pocket... really annoying

Yeah, getting mixed reviews in the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732986&page=84

oh man, it came out wrong: widget locker i need to test, and i don't know if it's bad or good... tap tap tap is the battery drainer and works badly...
and by the way, i'm usin cm7, and just configure "long-press search key" to open an app that locks the phone... so i don't use power button to lock or unlock! =oP
quite strange this power button, seems like gonna broke in two months...

Yeah that's why I asked this question. Maybe because it's a new phone and I like to play around with it. And I check the time a lot too. Can't wait til my watch comes!

i tested widget locker, it's what i was looking for... really worth to buy! just mark "easy wake" and the problem is solved, the app is really great, developer made a great job with a tutorial, battery drain cautions, customizations. I'm still testing, but what i see until now i liked. And btw, it has a great function: "hide incoming calls" that cover the original sense 'incoming call' screen with prevents accidental answers/deny that i talked about!
forget what i said before, you should test it! =o)

+1 to that. I bought it too thiago, loving it atm. Definitely worth the $2. Saves me worrying about my power button.
I have the app icon on my home screen, when I press it, the screen locks. I want the screen to turn off straight away. How do I do that?
Teslacoil did say battery was something that he takes in to consideration, hope it doesn't drain much.

in my tests i couldn't see any problem with battery draining. But a i need to look a little further.
about lock and turn off immediately the screen, i use "screen off and lock", it is free (but has a donate version). I put it in my 'long-press' search button, so i can lock easily!

I think I'll refrain from getting another app. I set the screen off option to 10s.

well, i don't think it is possible to turn off the screen by the app! i guess it is the only lack. gonna mail the developer, maybe it can be changed!

You can use widgetsoid it is a free app which you can make many toggle widgets with I use this to lock my screen you can make the widget invisible so if you got a colourful homescreen it won't mess it up

hi im using cm7 too.. i get how you can lock your screen with the long press search key.. but how do you wake up your dhd without the power button?

oh also.. i tried this: http://www.appbrain.com/app/proximity-screen-off/com.itsme4ucz.screenoff
works 90% of the time! p.s. make sure you read up on how to uninstall it!

i just mark the "easy wake mode" and wake by pressing volume button. I'm not a huge fan of those apps that use the proximity sensor to wake up or get the screen off, imo, seems like the sensor stays always on, what may cause batteryd rain... i confirmed it on "tap tap tap", witch is a nice idea, but in my testes, it helps to drain battery faster than usual...
i will try the app you suggested!! =oP

[Q] How to disable the TW Lockscreen

Is there a way to remove the stock lockscreen?
Here is what I have currently:
Rooted with UnNamed Rom, using No Lock app. I also have WidgetLock just in case.
What happens:
Phone will randomly go to the Stock Touch Wiz Lockscreen during any application (NetFlix, Pandora, texting). It is pretty annoying, and sometimes the phone will pull up the dialer when I didn't even press anything.
I thought I could simply remove it on Titanium Backup but I cannot find what the actual name of the TW lockscreen is named.
Any suggestions?

Well the thing is tho, I'm pretty sure if you disable the lock screen you keep your phone from sleeping. That's actually an option you can choose from inside widget locker, its called wake lock. But if your phone isn't gonna sleep, the battery will drain continuously. Plus, any button will turn the screen on. But then again, im not 100% sure.... just mostly sure

Does anyone else have some knowledge on this?
If what hijewpositive says is true, that really stinks to have such a big design flaw on this phone like that.
If you go to your keypad and put in *#7594# Check box to enable and press home button. It will disable the lock screen. If you want to use the lock screen again repeat and uncheck box. Hope this is what you are looking for.

Hmm, I've been getting the phone dialer pop up on UnNamed ROM also but only when I unlock the screen. Always thought I might of hit the phone dialer by accident, but this has occurred multiple times on UnNamed, but absolutely zero times before. Wonder if there's a bug?
Also, I use Go SMS which has a pop-up feature which prevents the lockscreen when an SMS comes through; phone still goes to sleep and no battery drain (tested it by leaving the popup on for half a day and using betterbatterystats, battery monitor, and cpu spy)
I use 'no lock' app. Never had a problem with it.

[Q] Saving the Home/Power button

Hi,
Is there any app/hack/mod that would allow me to use a gesture or some other control to get to the home screen and wake or sleep the display without pressing the home/power button again and again thousand times per day?
There's Zephyr for iPhone, something similar? Since samsung phones are relatively low build quality, I want to make sure the phone doesn't need repair in one year.
Thanks
I would suggest smart gesture app from playstore. Or alternatively you can use Pie Control which is also available on playstore.

For lock screen not sure if there is any app but if you've got a flipcover there is app available when you close the flipcover it will lock your screen when open unlocks or wakes,
OR
There is Devil Kernel which has touch wake feature where you just swipe you finger over your screen will wakeup no need to press any hardware keys
Found it.
"Swipe Home Button" does the job:

double tap eratic

Double tap to wake on my phone doesn't work well. I have to double tap several times so might as well just use the wake hardware button.
Is everyone's P2 the same?

I've tested it on my phone. It actually works nearly flawless. 19 out of 20 attempts are spot on. Maybe it's because of some setting?

No, it's quite unresponsive, at least compared to my old phone LG G2 from year 2013. I have to tap right above the hardware button. I can also tap in the center of the screen but then I'd have to do it with a specific technique, two gentle taps with a certain period of time in between.
It's not as reliable as on LG phones. So I don't use it on the P2. Out in the wild you don't have time to "do it right". It should just work like every single time like on my V10.
So it's not just me. Double tap on the P2 does seem to be pretty bad.
Good phone though ?
It's due to aggressive Android Doze feature...
The DTTW is not going to work AFTER 15 minutes in sleep/lock state (applicable to stock LeMoto Android Mellow or Nougat firmware...)
Just disable the Android Doze permanently with negative impact to standby/idle energy consumption rate...

An alternative might be to use ForceDoze and choose not to disable sensors. I haven't tried it myself.
Edit: Seems to be working pretty good.
Maybe can try going to Settings>Power Manager>Battery Optimization... Under the drop down menu on the top, select "All Apps"... Then scroll down to "Light Up The Screen"... And select "don't optimize"...

solazz is a star! Double tap now working perfectly for me.
I tried to optimize "light up the screen", but the screen is easily turned on if I keep the phone in my pocket while moving. I ended up using only the power button.
Edit: Meant deoptimize of course.
DTW is only usefull iff you dont use fingerprint wake i think.

Using Gravity Screen to wake phone when you pick it up

I was searching for a way to make Tasker wake phone when I pick it up, so I just have to at it to unlock it. In looking into this, I discovered Gravity Screen, which amongst other things, can wake your phone when you pick it up, straight to Face Unlock. It seems to work well but I'm not sure of the impact on battery. I'm not using it to lock the screen... Really only using it for the one thing.

I've been using this app on my last two phones in order to be able to double tap the home screen on my launcher (Action Launcher) to turn off the screen, WITHOUT locking the phone. For some reason though, this no longer works on the OP5T, double tapping just simply won't trigger the screen off shortcut. Really disappointed in this, are you able to get this to work on yours?
I do also use its proximity sensor feature so that it automatically turns the screen on upon removal from my pocket, and it turns the screen back off once I put the phone back into my pocket, which triggers the angle needed to turn the screen off. That feature still works as intended, and better yet, preps the screen for the face unlock. And as far as I can tell, hardly uses any extra battery.

It's not really within Gravity Screen itself, you'd have to use the launcher to set up the double tap on home screen to a shortcut. From there, you can pick one of Gravity Screen's shortcuts that allow you to either just turn off the screen, or do a persistent off screen, where you have to use the power button to bring it back on. I believe the problem I had with using the double tap to lock screen feature built into the launchers is that it forces you to have to enter in a password afterwards...face unlock or fingerprint do not work.

have used the app on my old OPO.. now on 5T it's just perfect.. just pick up the phone.. and prepare for landing on homescreen without any tap or button press
does not consume a lot of battery
I've used this in the past as a way to turn on the screen when it comes out of my pocket
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tf.wakeongesture
This application wakes up your phone, and it works well on my OP5T, it's called "Always on AMOLED"you can download it from F-Droid open source apps, Yalp Store and Google Play. I like that it is low on resources, double tap wake up screen option, lock screen clock, date, battery, custom message and notifications.

Anyway to turn off the phone with the home button?

Is there anyway to turn off the screen with the home button and then be able to use the fingerprint scanner to unlock?
Advanced features > side key.
For the locking part, there is an app called home button actions, but good lock would give you more functions , as to unlock, there is a double tap option, as LG devices have had since some time
I really appreciate the answers but still looking for an easy way to long press the home button to turn off the screen and have it turn back on with the fingerprint sensor.

Nova - gestures, home button, screen lock.
Always on display - active, fingerprint unlock turned on.
I think this is the closest you can get. I don't think the fingerprint is active while the screen's completely off.
If you want the screen completely off, you'll have to use the lift to wake option, that way it turns on as soon as you pick up your phone. You'll have to turn that option on in the phone settings.
Edit: "Nova".

A single press turns off the screen and pressing the fingerprint sensor when the screen is off turns on the phone. You can set a long press to bring up power off menu.
Just press the power button and the screen will turn off. The easiest way
You can also use "good lock" and the navstar plugin to create a power button shortcut.

The added "security" is a bad joke at a high cost to functionality.

Part, if not all of that, is a Samsung limitation, the app I'm using, DTSO, is similar to the one you referenced, it's an overlay/widget & it works just fine on my stock/unrooted OnePlus 7 Pro & it's running Android 10/Q.
The DTSO app never worked properly pre-dating Android 10 on any Samsung devices I've owned, & I tried other similar apps & the same results.
Regardless, it's a head-scratcher as to why Samsung doesn't build in the functionality, a la LG, perhaps it's a Knox thing limiting it, IDK......

Another option is One Handed Operation Plus. You can set gesture control screen off and much more. I wuv this apk. Up to 6 different discreet switch zones and up to 6 switches per zone. Very low power consumption and reliable. Perfect companion to fill in those unused curve screen zones, a brilliant apk.

Since I'm not using a screen lock the double tap on/off is great. Samsung marketing is like a box of rabid gerbils; absurd and unpredictable.
However when it comes to unrooted phone customization, Samsung is hands down the best.
A plain Jane Apple would bore me to death...

The long stroke gestures aren't as reliable.
Useful for Apks that get inadvertently triggered like flashlight, ha-ha.
Occasionally it gets triggered when cut and pasting but it integrates in pretty well. Adjusting the zone size and placement can help prevent this.
Plus you can have the touch zone indicator any color or transparency setting you like or none al all.
Great touch for custom themes.
Making use of the customization Samsung apps takes the Note 10+ to a completely new level.
Outstanding... and very resource/battery friendly.
