I think it's safe to say we all hate the 30 pin proprietary connectors on devices like the ipad.
My only concern is, how capable will the USB port on the xoom be. My immediate requirement would be Audio-in.
Do you think I may EVENTUALLY be able to connect a USB-based audio interface (for example: the Griffin iMIC ), once USB support on xoom improves?
I'm already disappointed that we can't charge over USB. I just hate to think that our only accessories will be the CRAPPY portfolio case and dock. Accessories matter.

USB charging is limited to 5v no matter what the connector (coming from a computer). Thats why you can't charge the i*ad over USB either. I think it made since to have 2 separate plugs so people don't get confused.

Actually The i*ad does charge on 5 volt, it is the current that is the problem. Most devices (laptops) can not provide the current required.... I have a 2amp 5volt USB charger that I use to use with my i*ad. Would love to use it with the Zoom....
I think it might have audio out via USB cause while docked on the Moto dock there is a headphone out. The only connections to the Xoom are USB and two pins presumably for charging.

I have a Tilt 2, had it since last March. I've had to have it replaced twice already due to the USB jack getting to the point where it no longer functions except to charge, it won't connect via cable to the pc, nor will it work with the multi-function adapter provided at purchase by HTC.
Is it dangerous/wrong to use after-market chargers/adapters/standard usb cables with the phone??? Am I damaging the usb port by using car chargers/wall chargers, etc that I got from ebay, or is this just a matter of bad design?
It isn't. It looks different, but its not. I believe its ONLY notched like that because not only is that port a USB port, but it also has a few extra 'wires' for connecting a headset to it. (via the HTC adapter)
Of course, the corporate answer is.. Yes using a non HTC Power Adapter could damage your TP2. But unofficially, I doubt it.
I've stopped buying over priced chargers for my phones and will by any Mini-USB charge that I can find. Most will work. The voltage does not matter anymore since USB is a set standard, and any modification to the voltage would not comply to the USB standard, and it wouldn't be USB then.
I've had the same issue with my TP2 (and with the HTC Wing I had before). Check the power adapters itself. I have a RAZR charger I've been using for years, and I think the plug itself has just about had it.
Also take some canned air to the USB port on the phone (while it is powered off and battery removed) and try to remove debris from the USB port. The minuscule little piece of dust could cause a bad connection. Electronic cleaner works better at this. (its LIKE canned air but contains alcohol-based cleaner in the "air". It's available at Radio Shack.) This fixed the problem I was having with my Wing.
And finally, it may just be time for a new phone. The ports just plain wear out from daily plugging and unplugging that adapter in. One slight bend and the port is all out of alignment.. (does it wiggle instead of being a firm connection when you plug in the charger?)
This is why I am waiting for the day these induction charges are standard in phones.. No more power adapters!
I just use a normal USB plug for mine. I don't even fool with the one it came with so I don't get that one confuse with something else. They only notched it like that to make a buck, I would guess.
If you are trying to use Mini USB headphone, only the ones made by HTC will work as it has 11 pins. Standard Mini USB has only 5 pins.
I bought these on ebay. The HDMI is short but worked but when I connect both cables to lapdock, the USB is not being recognized so the keyboard/mouse is not working. I want this just to act as an extension so I can use full lapdock abilities with cables. Any idea what's going on (cable charges on plug but does not charge on lapdock)? Maybe someone has better usb cables.

why wouldn't they? Cheap build quality that doesn't include the data wires? Hell I'll be willing to splice two cables together to get our desired effect, the only problem is that cords with a female micro usb are incredibly hard to come by

the only reason that is my suspicion is because there are many "charging" products out there that don't really need data. Why there would be a need for such a small charging extension cable is beyond me, but it's the only solution I can think of, but I have no way of confirming or denying it either. The ebay descriptions seem to imply that the data wires are there, but we all know how reliable ebay can be...
Another idea I had was that it might be sensing the resistance in the cable, since, if I remember correctly, that was how some think/though the car dock puts the atrix into car mode without a magnet as is/was commonly used. Again these are just ideas.
Or the cable is just so poorly made that it's defective...I honestly have no clue
Has anyone got full lapdock capabilities using extension cables? I can only get the screen working and not the mouse and keyboard.

This micro usb extension cord explicitly states that all 5 wires are connected (compatible with droid bionic for the purpose of docking with a case on the phone):

The HDMI cable seems to work. On the lapdock, with just the HDMI cable hooked up, it functions like it was it's an entertainment center.
The USB cord will need to be modified a little bit. I can't get it to seat right on the USB jack of the dock. I'll need to shave it down a bit as it doesn't sit down snugly.

I ordered the USB cable and experience this same problem, though I am waiting for my hdmi parts to come in (by April 6th I should have all my parts...). The cable itself works flawlessly as a micro usb extension cable when connecting it to the computer.
again as mentioned in the other thread, you want to be careful with the 5v coming out that micro hdmi port. for connecting back to your phone would be no issue, as the phone charges using this voltage, but hooking the lapdocks micro usb up to a host device probably wont appreciate the 5v coming back up the cable, where normally the usb device would be pulling power from said host, not providing it.
one suggestion is to just clip the red wire inside your micro usb cable/adapter.
btw the adapters i use do fit snugly side by side, without modification.
I've been following this thread for a little while now, and I wanted to share something I found.
I was looking at the Motorola Travel Webtop adapter. And I was curious to see whether it could be tweaked to suite our needs. I naively thought/hoped that I could flip the connectors in the device to make a small adapter to connect the Atrix to newer Lapdocks. Unfortunately as you can see in the pictures below (sorry not enough posts to link to the pictures) the two connectors are connected via a PCB not wires or a ribbon cable. Although I still have high hopes that I can de-solder the HDMI and USB connectors, and use a small length of flat ribbon cable to connect them and then re-positions the connectors in the case, to build a micro adapter to use the Atrix on the newer Lapdocks. Should this fail this will at least prevent others from making the same mistake, and solve the mystery of what's really inside the Webtop Travel adapter.
Do any one know if this Micro HDMI Cable would work for Lapdock.

No. The Motorola Dock (at least the one with the model number you specified) has both the Micro-USB AND the Micro-HDMI connections in the dock connector. If it weren't for the inclusion of the Micro-HDMI port, then it MIGHT be usable... but it's hard to say without having something like that on hand. But as it stands, the one you mentioned wouldn't be usable.

Have you come across anything like this? I know the Note 2 has a dock similar to this, however I have heard it will not work "Fully" with the the 4.1 firmware. We will have to wait till 4.2 for it to work. I am looking to replace multiple laptops with cell phones. Bluetooth works ok, however we might run into issues with unpairing and pairing again in multiple rooms. USB keyboard and mouse would be the way to go. As well as HDMI out for monitors.
I spoke with Mike M from MonoPrice tech support and as he put it if there is a demand for this type of cable they will create one.
The cable will have:
Micro USB Male Out (to your phone)
A Female Type A USB Data (for mouse, keyboard, hub, etc)
A Mini or Full size HDMI Out ( TV or monitor)
And a Micro USB charge for powering extra devices.
There are tons of benefits on using USB rather than Bluetooth for keyboards and mice. Especially when you have multiple phones coming and going from one station.

I am making a custom car dock for my Note 10.1 N8010 (2012 version) and would like a cable that allows it to charge (at the full 2 amps, I've got a car charger, the cable just needs a USB A plug to go into it) and also output audio through the dock connector. An OTG port for plugging in external storage would also be nice but not essential. Does such a cable exist? I don't mind if the audio side is RCA or 3.5mm jack, I can convert it to what I need.
The closest I could find is this one on Alibaba: http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/USB-AV-Audio-Video-TV-Out_60008986653.html but it says it's only compatible with the Tab 7" and has a minimum order quantity of 20 units, I only need one! There's so many cables out there for newer models but I can't seem to find one at all for the 2012 version.

I own it & the external power is not for charging.
It's for powering a high powered USB devices such as USB HDD.

Thanks for letting me know. Makes sense, I'm just surprised that no cable exists for charging and audio output at the same time along with OTG, I'm sure it must be possible somehow. I guess I'm just asking it to do too much, I may go for the video output cable from Alibaba in that case then and do without the OTG/USB functions.

There's a dock that has charging and a seperate audio (analog) output. I have two of them. The audio only works with stock Samsung roms though. With CM there's no audio out.

Would it be possible to change the micro USB female connector to a USB C female connector?
I highly doubt it. That's the port Apple uses, I dont think our M8s have the solder tabs in the same spot as the USB-C...and our phones probably dont have support for that port. It would be pretty sweet though lol.

USB-C (also USB 3.1) is different from Apple's proprietary "Lightning" or "Thunderbolt" ports. USB-C does "copy" the feature of the Lightning port, in that it can be plugged in up or down. But Lightning/Thunderbolt are only for Apple products , while USB-C looks to the be the new standard moving forward for all types of PCs and mobile devices.
But otherwise, I agree with your comments. The M8 most likely can't support USB-C even if you were able to physically connect it. Plus, the plug itself is slightly thicker than Micro-USB. So the plug probably wouldn't even fit in the opening on the M8 case, anyway (its barely big enough for the Micro-USB plug).

No worries. I'm a bit out of the loop on some of the latest tech as well, apparently. I had to Google "USB-C" to even see what the OP was talking about!
