[Q] USB Tethering: Failing miserably - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After waiting 1 month for a replacement device I finally got one (used, but eh) and it's been perfect so far except for this.
I was going to transfer some music onto my phone until USB tethering completely failed. Drivers didn't install correctly and my computer repeatedly says that the device is unplugged. Except, when using HTC Sync, it works perfectly, and the phone is always charging when it's plugged in. Specifically, from what I caught at a glimpse, the ABD driver failed, and some other driver didn't work well either (can't remember it's name ... AMDI oriented device or something?). Occasionally it detects it as F:\, but it says to insert a drive into it.
Found this: androidsamurai.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=4 Didn't work because my phone wasn't even being detected.
Installed HTC Sync, worked fine, synced phone supposedly.
Hard reset, still not working.
Any help? No ROMs, running Vista. Tried this on Windows 7 as well and it failed there too and now it won't even detect the phone at all when connecting.
Is it because I have no files on the SD card? Could it be the cord? I have a friend with a HTC Desire, I guess he could help me test out if it is. Regarding the SD card, Handtec refused to send it back because it apparently wasn't in the phone (my ass, I know perfectly well it was ... should've taken pictures) so I'm using one without the default files on the card. Which brings me to my next question: does anyone have the default contents of the SD card in a ZIP or something? If I can't resolve this I'm just buying an adapter to transfer things via USB.

Cannot mount phone as disk drive

Hey I have looked everywhere for a fix to this problem.
I rooted my desire a few weekends ago, with it now running Neophyte Froyo 2.2 ROM perfectly.
I connected the phone to PC afterwards and transferred some apps onto the sd card (as a disk drive) including a few songs as well.
Since yesterday however, whenever i plug my phone into PC, I am no longer able to access the SD card as a disk drive. The computer recognises the usb, however the phone no longer brings up the menu which asks what i want to eg. charge only, sync, disk drive etc. There is also no drop down menu from the top of the phone for me to change this. Going and manually changing the setting in the desire to "automatically mount as disk drive" has also not helped.
I thought my phone was USB bricked and went on to performing the fix for this. However, despite going through both the methods posted here as well as modaco (changing the CID), the problem persists.
I have accessed the phone using adb, and after typing adb devices, it registers the phone as connected with a serial number, so i dont think USB bricking is an issue here.
I can see a disk drive in computer whenever i plug the phone in, but if i double click on it, it states "Please insert disk drive into F". I have uninstalled the htc sync and drivers numerous times without improvement. I have also restarted my PC and my phone numerous times without improvement.
My phone still reads my SD card no problem. My SD card is also able to be accessed by my PC by taking it out of the phone and using a card reader.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
I have the same problem on my samsung vibrant phone.
Exactly the same problem here
my SD card is definitely fine, adb commands work.
neither double twist nor HTC sync recognise any phone connected. my computer sees it, but can't access it (same error message)
would love to sort this out too!
ROM: LeeDrOiD v2.3d
Radio: 32.54.00.32U_5.14.05.17
EDIT: found out it was my own fault. i use autostarts, and stopped 'PC synchronization' from automatically booting after startup. thought it would automatically start when connected to PC, but clearly not. once i undid this it connects to PC fine again, get the dropdown menu!
Sorry, how did you fix this - i am having this too...

He stopped the PC synchronization. Maybe you can stop it in the menu (Settings - Accounts & sync -> disable Background data and Auto-sync). I don't know if that works, but you can try it.
If you have got a Task Manager or something like that you could look for the task and kill it.
I'm not sure, but it should help.
Please post the result of your try.
Tried - no help. Couldn't find anything like "PC synchronisation"??
I ended up taking the battery out, jiggling the SD card and trying again - that seemed to fix it ?! weird...
great

[Q] EVO to PC connectivity issues

So, I've played with this thing for 4 hours and I'm about to throw it at the wall.
This is my wife's evo. I rooted it like a year ago when she got it. Shortly after she settled on a CM7 ROM she liked and I haven't touched the phone for 6 months or more. She used my Epic the other day that has the latests ACS SyndicateFrozen ROM on it and she now wants an epic because she likes the ROM so much. I'm trying to appease her by putting ACS' Elite ROM on her EVO.
I started by trying to plug her phone in to my PC, the one I originally used to root it way back when. The drivers are already installed on here. My PC acknowledges that I plugged the phone in, but I cannot view the file directory in My Computer. I then go to the phone and it says USB Debugging enabled, and gives me the option to disable. Neither way allows me to read the phones files. I've tried 2 aftermarket cables (not the HTC one). I've tried updating the HTC Sync software, although she doesn't use it. I also tried installing the HTC Sync software and drivers on my laptop and using that PC, same problem. I've thumbed thru the phones menu for hours and haven't found anything that is turned off that shouldn't be. When I plugged the phone into my laptop after installing the drivers, it acknowledged the phone, said installing drivers, and then confirmed drivers were installed successfully.
All I want to do is access the SD card so I can drop a ROM on it and reflash her phone. This is turning into a nightmare! The CM7 ROM on there now has been giving her random issues for the past month, any chance this is the cause?
I'm hoping there is something stupidly obvious that I'm overlooking.
Thanks for your help!
Reboot into recovery, while connected to your computer, and then select the USB-MS option. Your computer should recognize the card as a drive and give you access to it.

Some other alternatives would be to download the rom directly from the phone, pull the SD card out and put it in a card reader, or use one of the wireless file transfer apps found in the market.
I'm using King's Alliance ROM and have had that same issue on both 7.5 and 7.6 versions. I have one of those Sprint Battery Boost devices that allow you to put an SD card in them and use it as a jump drive, so I do that instead. I would use a simple SD adapter card but the sandisk adapter i have always says it's protected somehow and won't let me transfer ROMs to it. Sorry I don;t have a solution, but I feel for ya

This worked after 7 or 8 tries of toggling USB-MS. It finally connected to the computer saying it was only a USB1.1 device instead of USB2.0. Got the files copied, gonna wipe it tonight.
Thanks for the help!

USB not recognized, rooted with stock ATT

I've had my Galaxy S3 for about 2 weeks and rooted it using a link mrRobinson provided, it has been working great until today. I hooked it up to my PC as I had done many times before and all it does is charge the phone. I no longer get the USB icon in the top left and I no longer see the phone as attached to the PC. I also noticed it no longer recognizes my 32GB SD card (EDIT: I tried an old 2GB card and it worked fine). Not sure how this happened, what I can say is that I installed a Genesis emulator and was in the process of copying over all of the genesis games to the SD card (1GB or so of Data and 1000 files or so). I didnt have time to wait for it to finish so I cancelled it and possibly disconnected the phone before it was done. I dont think I did, but its all I can think of and its the last time I remember it working.
The good news is the phone works, it makes calls, I can use internal drive for pics/vids/downloads etc... but the SD card wont work, nor will the USB connection.
I am able to get the phone into Odin mode, however its useless because the PC doesnt see the phone. It only charges it.
Although I used mrRobinsons root, it was the second one I did unfortunately so my counter says:
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: Yes (1 counts)
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
I think that 1st one killed my warranty though :\
I reinstalled the phone drivers on the PC and restarted both the PC and the phone. I've tried different cables as well. It will not connect!! Anyone know the issue? Right now, the only way for me to xfer files back and forth is via email (I cant get Kies Air to work either). Please help.

UMS file transfer problems

When trying to transfer stuff to my phone using my main PC with Windows 7 (laptop with XP works fine) I have trouble copying stuff to the memory card on the phone. I'm using SGS3 Easy UMS, the card shows up fine in Windows but when copying stuff across it either just gets stuck at Calculating... or might copy a couple of files then stop.
Taking the card out and putting it in my card reader works fine too, and like I said, no problems with my XP laptop. Any ideas what might be wrong? Same happens from CWM using UMS.
I've started doing some Android software development and the PC upstairs is having problems remotely installing the built program to my Note II, ADB recognises the phone as does Eclipse but when it tries to install the app it just times out.
On my laptop now and it's working fine. Tried running an app 3 times, closing Eclipse and reloading it and every time it worked fine. Something up with my main PC by the looks of things.
Hmm, plugging my phone into one of the USB 2 ports instead of a USB 3 port seems to have fixed the issue *fingers crossed*

Phone not connecting to my computer anymore... Need to transfer images

So my friend, having made a move to the iPhone 6+, asked me to help her move pictures, etc. from her old phone to her new phone. Unfortunately, I don't know what went wrong and her phone (t989) won't connect to the computer. The notification that it's in USB mode doesn't show, the sd cards (internal and external) aren't being read / even visible on the computer, and it's a stupid phone that I personally want to destroy.
Caveats:
She is on Gingerbread still having never updated her phone. All her pictures are on her internal SD card too. Apps are of course restricted by her OS (but it wouldn't be that hard to find old apps, just time consuming). Google Play Store crashes frequently while downloading apps. She isn't rooted (obviously, I don't blame her since she isn't interested in all that, and the only root method seems to be to use ODIN, but that would wipe her internal clean which I don't want to do.
What I've done:
I've done a hard reset on the phone (shut down, remove battery, insert battery, turn on). Not sure if the seconds matter, but it was a quick take out, put in. Maybe a few seconds, definitely not 30 more. But when the phone turned on, her time went back to 1970 or something.
I've tried to copy the DCIM of the internal onto the external, but she has like 5k pictures and using My Files, it quits the transfer randomly without an indication where it quit or why.
AirDroid, but that gave me invalid package. Could have installed manually, but didn't have that much time and didn't think about it.
Bluetooth on the mac doesn't stay connected to the phone.
My goal:
Figure out how to connect to the computer preferably over USB. I still need to transfer her whatsapp messages too but without it showing up on the computer, I'm stuck. I've downloaded Samsung drivers, I have Samsung Kies installed. I just don't know what is wrong with it.
Any ideas? I've done all this on my laptop, but I told her to come over some day to use my desktop and see if it works on there (I was using a Windows Bootcamp partition on my macbook pro). I tried to connect the phone to OSX as well, but I didn't install Kies, which might be a reason... but the USB connected notification just doesn't want to come.
