Now, the Mobile XDApp gives you options to help eliminate load times and increase your productivity as you view fourms, read and reply to posts, start new threads, upload files, download files, manage your account and more!

Development is temporarily slowed, as I'll be very busy with work from here until late December. You have to do what you have to do, right? I'm trying to fit the XDApp in as best I can. Development is happening- it's just much slower.
Have a great idea for your own XDA-based application? I'll be releasing LibXDA soon, a .NET library that will allow you to interface with the XDA-developers forum. Check the forums directly from your app, or make a post from your application. Support for .NET and COM inter-ops, so it's extremely easy to use .NET applications, and usable from C++.
(Of course, if you're going to run the application from C++, the library will still suffer that 'managed overhead' that C# programs suffer from.)

I'm releasing 'nightly' builds whenever I have time for development. They're pretty much in-progress snapshots, and they're open to the public. I'll be releasing a 'more official' Alpha tomorrow, which means a lot of people will be getting e-mails with passwords. For those of you who want to see the app but don't get an e-mail, you can still run the next nightly (which will probably be further along in development than the Alpha), even though you won't be able to help right away with testing.
Here's the build number scheme, if you want to know:
VXBBB
V- Released Version- the last released major (integer) version at the time of the release.
X- Development 'branch'; 0- Backend Development (utilizing the lite version as a frontend); 1- XDApp Lite; 2- XDApp Professional; 3- Alternate Build (i.e. for testing an extension)
BBB- the build number, which starts from 0 in the version or branch and increments each time I hit the 'build' button
Features:
Complete Features:
-Dynamic multi-screen rendering library supports any screen of any size, shape, and DPI. Tested and works on QVGA, WVGA, VGA, and Square VGA. Theoretically should work with much larger screens, including large-screen RedFly devices/software.
-GZIP compression, which decreases load times by more than 80%. That's more efficient than Opera Mini! See below for compression statistics.
-Full, automatic authentication protocols mean you never have to waste time logging in again!
-Automatic server-side thumbnailing of images for much reduced image transfer.
-Unique 'superheader' view organizes forums, making it easier to navigate the forums!

-Full finger-friendly kinetic scrolling in all applicable views.
-Ability to 'filter' the super-headers view, showing only relevant devices.
-Fast encryption for storing user information.
-Non-touchscreen device operability.

Can't believe it. I've been lurking around this site for over a year and this is the first time I saw the XDA 'bounty' (I've only recently heard about it at all).
Anyway, this is an interesting concept. I'm pretty much fine with using Opera Mini to browse XDA, but this could potentially turn out great. I hope all the best to you and your work, Ktemkin!

That seems to work pretty well, but, unfortunately:
-is Completely in Chinese.
-is Closed Source
-takes up a lot of the screen with useless icons and buttons.
-doesn't support downloads/uploads, or most of the advanced features planned for the XDApp project.
Might be useful for people to use in the interim- if they can figure out how to use it.

On a more XDApp-related note, I have a few questions for the end-user:
1) Icons: are they worth the screen space? They would only be 5-6 pixels wide (10-12 on double VGA systems), and they'd appear in the following places:
-In front of posts, displaying the the 'new', 'popular', 'you replied here', etc. icons.
-Real icons for things like quote and edit. Right now, the design is that you quote, edit, reply, etc. by right clicking (click and hold) and selecting that option from a menu. Would finger-sized icons in each post be better?
2) Mobile posts- when posting from the a mobile phone, should the XDApp (have an option to) auto-insert a small icon on each post it makes? For example, a post from a mobile phone might look like:

I for one like the Icon for mobile post. +1 for the right click option as it will not take as long to load on older devices without the icons.

1) - Icons in front of the posts aren't exactly necessary. I guess they could be nice, but I'd rather be able to read more text on the screen instead. The icons are rather small, though, so it's no big deal.
- About the "Quote" and "Edit" buttons...I say that the right clicking method is awesome! Otherwise seeing all of those "Quote" and "Edit" buttons on every single post is repetative. I like your right-clicking method. 1 vote for that.
2) the Mobile post thing is a cool idea, and you might as well have the option. But, a better location for the icon...You know how you can pick an icon for your reply? Such as how I picked the Cool Sunglasses Smiley? If we could somehow replace that with a mobile phone icon, that would be perfectly ideal. But, we'd have to get the Admins to do that. So...I'm for having the option of putting the "Mobile" icon, just like how you showed in the example.

hmm 2 qstions, 1. will have multilang support? and 2. you are doing a server side work or the app donwload the page and then fix it for the phone?

Icons....are a good question...is pushing a icon that much more functional than right clicking? Icons for for things like quote and edit might give a more ascetic or native look but IMO they would add little to the usability. Icons in front of posts...I really don't care either way...and the Mobile Post thing is a very cool idea....ktemkin...I like the way you think...this app is going to be awesome!

Ktemin should be putting your bounty in the pot soon.
Ktemin (or however you spell that), you should put the bounty in the Thread Title, like it used to be. Well, actually, the bounty doesn't matter anymore, nvm then.
But, everyone, should we have buttons for "Quote", "Edit", etc? Or do you want to access those features by right clicking on the post, and then clicking them? By using the right-click method, we save space. By using the buttons method, we have quicker access. What do you think? (just repeating Ktemin's question).

**update** If you were caught in the infinite automatic-update, things should be fixed now. Also, I forgot to disable the Compose button in the inbox. It will crash the app if clicked on. Hopefully by friday I can have another version that has this part working
Photo Albums! Pictures can now be viewed in XDAFacebook.
Big pictures will open up in the default browser for the time being. Once I make a good photo viewer, I'll replace that.
Also, the settings menu has a whole section dedicated to photos. Feel free to play with the settings, but numerical values == 0 or <0 will cause the app to crash! There is no safty net for this!
There is a number for concurrent image downloads. This number should be between 6-10. Any more can cause slow down, and less and the effect seems non-existant. I've gone as high as 25 and felt pretty good about it. But I haven't dared push it to the limit!
New albums had a few bugs so I held back on this release. It will be coming soon!
Older Posts! Feel free to browse the older posts I've successfully gone about a days worth of posts back w/o any lag.
Searchable Friends List! I added a search box at the top of the friends search list
Memory Management! Special Thanks goes out to Corwin9S. He helped me look at the memory usage. I reduced the CPU cycles by ~30%. It still takes up about 3-6 mbs of RAM. This is caused by Form Allocations, DLL imports, etc. Most of the space is just allocated space that I can't get rid of. I will try to find more ways to make the RAM usage go down, but from what I've been told by some people at MSFT, this numer isn't uncommon or bad. CPU cycles are what count and that's what I'm trying to optimize
GUI fixes! I finished the drop-downs, so they look a little more professional. I also added the numerical counters. There are still more that can be done on them, so I will continue improving their apperance and performance.

And finally SPEED!! This version should be the fastest yet. Rendering times are super quick and load times seem to be back to where they belong.
Instructions for Localization:
Please create a blank language file (instructions are above) and edit ONLY the text in between the quote marks "". The quotes need to remain!
Verify that your text doesn't fly off the screen. Anywhere that the text is too long for the graphic, try shortening the word or pick a different one (if that's possible) if not, let me know (via picture) and I'll make the necessary changes.
Once you have a translated file, save it as <Language>.txt and upload it to your device. Place it in the same directory where you got the Blank.txt.
Please share your translations!
ALSO! Since the app will be transforming and new features will be being added, the translation process will be ongoing.
If you click "Create Blank Language File" and you already had an alternate translation loaded and working, the Blank.txt will only have the new strings in english, so you will only need to translate the changes.
Unfortunately, after a couple of hours searching the web and looking at platform SDKs, I have learned that poking is not supported by the Graph or REST APIs (what I use to interact with facebook). I've been looking, and I might be able to hack something that might work, or I could have the option to support Pokes via SMS. I need your feedback. Which option (or both) sounds the best? Does anyone even Poke anymore?!
Wall posting is very basic at the moment. I will be making an advanced text editor that has more options for posting links, privacy settings, etc.

Skinning instructions

(OPTIONAL) Make skin with concept
Skin the XDAFacebook app instructions:
Download zip file
extract all images and place them in the \Program Files\XDAFacebook\Resources folder
launch application

Ok, instructions on how to skin the app are as follows:
Find the image that you want to replace.
Create new image and give it the specific name.
Special "tags" at the end of the name give the image special features.
copy the images to the \Program Files\XDAFacebook\Resources directory
list of tags:
_alpha this will take the first pixel of the image and make it the images "Alpha Channel". Make sure that the image is solid in that color and that there are no artifacts!
_trans_### where ### is a number (ie 200, 100, 10. Not 001). This number represents the total opacity for the image. The higher the number, the more opaque. Range 255-0.
_trans_png. This only works with 24 bit PNG files!!!! This is also very resource intensive, so make this a last option. This will preserve the images alpha channel. It is the only way to make partial transparencies.
List of files: This list will increase and until final release is up for change!

the dimensions are based on 800x480 res screen. If someone wants to experiment and give me dimensions for other resolutions, please do so!

At this time I just use opera or skyfire cose the MS app is realy useless for me ....

I jsut wrote appubator an email asking them to make a new FB app for WinMo (since there was a possibility like this). They have not replied ever since though Maybe they did not like the idea.
Maybe we could something to convince them do do the app OR!
Try to make our own application. This place is crowded with talented and awesome coders and graphics so I think we can definitely put something together. What do you people think?
I am graphic myself - If there are coders who decide to do go for it, I would like to help with visage of the app and the overall design and UI.

Actually there is no SDK for Windows Mobile provide by Facebook only for iphone and android.
But there is a lot of explication about how facebook work.

So the first thing is to wrote ourself a SDK we can use as a library for our program.
I'm going to search if we can exploit official Facebook library instead.

i have a funny feeling the only reason they show the APIs for Iphone and Android is because the SDKs are open source.

I really appreciate your interest in our company. Sorry about not responding to your e-mail. We haven't see it come through - which address did you send it to?
We've been following this thread for a while. In short, a deep, detailed app like FB isn't something that we would do. First of all, we likely couldn't charge for it. If we did, its likely that FB or Microsoft would do one better than us and then we're out the time and money to develop it.
We're more about developing many apps (perhaps 100/year), that are smaller and easier to code, and selling them on multiple smartphone platforms.
If you have any ideas for apps you'd like to see - please visit the site at www.appubator.com. Register and submit your ideas. We're reviewing them more quickly and should be able to get back to you pretty quickly with a go/no-go.

Your opinion about Windows Phone 7 UI!

Hi All,
It's all great to hear Microsoft officially announces the "Windows Phone 7 Series". Another Mobile OS, put there to compete with other OS's.
But I want to know one thing =>
Am I the only one that find the general UI of "Windows Phone 7" unattractive, "nothing special" and bore-some?
The moment I saw the "Start screen", I said to myself: "Damn, is this the UI Microsoft wanna use to show its competitiveness to other OS's??? ". From my point of view, the look of winmo 6.5.3 on the freshly announced HTC HD mini is WAY BETTER than that of Windows Phone 7.
This is just my opinion, now, what's your opinion about the UI?

The moment I saw the "Start screen", I said to myself: "Damn, is this the UI Microsoft wanna use to show its competitiveness to other OS's??? ". From my point of view, the look of winmo 6.5.3 on the freshly announced HTC HD mini is WAY BETTER than that of Windows Phone 7.
This is just my opinion, now, what's your opinion about the UI?

I would disagree. I like the visuals. On the contrary, the look is NEW and NOT FAST!!

Everyone has there opinions and taste. I honestly love what MS has done with the revisions. I think visuals are truly innovative and elegant. The animations are uncanny. I do agree the home screen is dull and boring, but the rest of the OS is vibrant. Here's some screen shots from my post. I do like it as well...looks fresh but whether it is good to use on a daily basis remains to be prooven!
And BTW: the look of the new SenseUI Builds really annoys me! til Version 2.1 everything was fine...but the new ones??? No way.

I won't talk about looks here, because that's personal taste.
Moreover, what counts is functionality - how easy and fast it gets the job done.
This is easily and by far the best and most well thought through UI I've ever seen.
I particularly like
- the ability to pin pretty much everything to the first page (but unlike Sense, as many things as you want), whether it's contacts, programs or whatever
- the things you pin to the first page not being static, but also showing information - a very clever way to bring together the iPhone's icon-based home screen with Windows Mobile's information based home screen.
- the navigation through the pages, with the text on top going out of the screen to show you that there's more you can discover by swiping left/right
- the panorama backgrounds on all the screens (cover arts in music, a random picture in photos etc.)
- the ability for third party developers to integrate their stuff (like additional social networks or streaming services) into the hubs (I hope there will be a lot of freedom for third parties to do so!).
- the seamless integration of all kinds of services in general, whether it's Exchange, Windows Live (finally!!), Facebook...
I also particularly like that some good concepts from previous Windows Mobile versions have been preserved:
- long press menus
- softkeys
- quick search through any list (in WM6.5, it was the keyboard icon, now it's the required search button)
Those enable a consistent UI throughout all applications, contrary to the mess you find on the iPhone, where important buttons like "back" are in different places depending on the application you're in.
What I do NOT like:
- The all applications list: That should be a grid, cause there's lots of wasted space there.
- There seems to be no easy way to get to the music controls while music is playing in the background.
- Apparently there is no easy way to switch between running applications, this seems to work much like WM6.5, with the back button taking you to the application you used before. This is a mess, the back button should open some kind of task switcher instead.

I love the new start menu in Windows Phone 7. Titanium didn't display enough information on the home page, requiring you to hover over items to see information. Windows Mobile 6.1 today screens were too small to tap. Sense is either functional (icons for quick launching) or informational (clock), but never both at the same time. Why doesn't the launch icon for Messenger show me the latest messages I have? Why don't my contacts' icons show me the latest interaction I had with them?
Windows Phone 7 adds all of those in a simple, attractive UI. You can give a Windows Phone 7 to any person and they'd probably be able to use it, but give Sense to a person and they might not. (you might think the contrary... I thought Sense was easy to use, until I saw my peers struggle with it and typing on the keyboard... on a HD2...)

I'm not sure how important the applications list is going to be going forward. With the way apps can integrate into the "hubs" I think you will not be using this list very often.
I'm hoping the music controls function like the ZuneHD. The ZuneHD has a dedicated media control button that brings up a screen overlay when pressed. This overlay allows you to pause/play, skip/fast forward/rewind and increase/decrease volume. Also, on the ZuneHD, you can pause and play a song by tapping the album art.
I am very eager to see how the multitasking works/doesn't work when they show the SDK at MIX next month.
Overall, I love the UI. It seems like an evolution of the ZuneHD to me.

Android, of course. WP7 is OS for feature phones (dumbphones) just like iPhone OS is.

I actually have three upgrade eligibilities this year. If the rumor about the SE X10 coming to ATT is true, that will be one of them. I will also wait and see what Android phones HTC sends to ATT.
I will also, without any doubt, reserve one of the upgrades for WMP7. I had very low expectations for MS and WMP7 but I was very impressed with what they showed on Monday. I can't wait for MIX to see the rest.
Of course, I'm a phone whore so I am never completely satisfied anyway!

In my opinion I think the UI looks awesome. It's unique, fresh, new, & looks like nothing else (excluding the Zune HD). the start menu & the App list look a little bit dull but the whole Hubs system just looks wonderful. I like the new idea of the context menus. WinPho 7 is not evolution from the previous WM, it is Revolution.

From a UI perspective I really like the thought behind it. It's pretty much a directory structure that's self organizing with a 'splash' screen for each directory. I have alot of applications stored on my wm device that I store over various folders. Directories are a good way of organizing sizable amounts of information. This UI is basically an improvement to that age old structure, putting some transparency on this structured yet intuitive setup.
It's visually impressive, yet does not have that bells and whistle feel that can get stale.
But I take objection to their comments that a phone is not a PC. That's the wrong message to send. A PC just stands for personal computer...you can't get more PC than a handheld device. It's clearly a PC, the message they should send is that it's not a desktop, it's not a laptop, it's a handheld device. While still a PC you expect a suitable UI to pair with each version of a PC you interact with.
From a marketing perspective, I think the windows phone 7 would mesh well with their 'I'm a PC' marketing campaign. A commercial seeing someone working on a desktop/laptop and then using mobile office, and exchange to take that to your phone would be a great commercial to make.
Microsoft is missing the picture with that overly simplistic comment.
If I could carry the power of my desktop with me, I would just need different display devices with the appropriate UI to interact with my PC. That's really the destiny of computers...well not even to carry the hardware, but to just have different methods of display and interaction with a single device. So you can sit down at a kb and mouse, or pick a up a multitouch display, or take a handheld on a train with you but still have common storage, and processing.

But I am not happy that it requires a minimum of 1GHz processor. Even then the graphics rendering especially the Album scrolling is not very fluid. That was very cleary observed in Joe's Demo considering that he hand only a handhul of pictures. My iphone has @3500 pictures and I can scroll through it like water flowing across the screen.

This version of WP7 is not my favorite. I like the other betas.

And this was a demo of pre-release software. I wouldn't put any weight behind the peformance that was shown in the demo. It will almost certainly be much improved before the RTM.

It won't work it needs 2GHz processor. You will have to overclock,haha just kidding.

My biggest concern with this new OS is the "need" to integrate with social networks. I'm by no means interested to see the status messages my friends/collegues post on facebook, twitter, linkedin, myspace etc. Also, WM7 is pointing towarsds xbox live integration, which will -as I understood- in basics also be used as a new "Microsoft hardware only" social network.
Another thing that bothers me about the new UI is that it looks slowish, even in a demo.. Doesn't look too appealing yet so far!

Windows Phone 7 SkyCat App

I am the developer behind Windows Phone 7's Mockingbird IM application. I have gotten reviews from it, however, I am not currently working on upgrading Mockingbird IM yet.
Instead, I would like to announce a new application being developed by me. As stated in the description of Mockingbird IM, SkyCat will be coming to the marketplace soon.
However, I am in a little dilemma. I really don't know what features you guys liked or disliked on Mockingbird IM, I have given a whole new interface (without themes) to SkyCat. As one of the reviewers stated that the UI was clunky.
SkyCat will be replacing Mockingbird IM as a better IM client and will support multiple IM protocols (AIM, IRC, etc...)
I would love to see some feedback on the application if anyone wants to leave me some, detailed feedback would be nice so SkyCat will be in near perfection by the time it comes out on 10/11/11.

on android there is Trillian, which is also available on a select few other OS. I love trillian and the whole concept of it but it doesn't look like them gonna go for WP7.
Now, is your SkyCat supposed to be something like that? Because then i would most defo be interested in using it and would also be willing to test for you (on my wifes Telephone tho hehehe).

I currently only develop for Windows Phone 7, as it is a great operating system. I believe everyone should be switching to Windows Phone 7, but to get that to happen, more programs need to be made available, which is the point of "SkyCat" (Officially named Groovy IM).
I see that the only multi-messenger application currently available for Windows Phone 7 is IM+ and that lacks many features consumers are wanting which is why Groovy IM is going to bring those features into one application for Windows Phone 7 and hopefully be better than our competitors over at IM+.
As trillian's userinterface matches that of Android's, mine will be matching Windows Phone 7. I do have some screenshots to upload today. As some people may be wondering what it will look like, however, be aware, this application is far from finished and I am only taking suggestions (not beta testers) currently for the application.
You can offer suggestions for Groovy IM over this forum (XDA-Developers.com) as I currently do not have a website devoted to Groovy IM.
Please note that only certain features can be shown as of this time and it may not be the final outlook of the program as it can change through out time.

We may add or remove some of the above protocols based on suggestions / requests received here.

Thank you for your concern with Groovy IM.
I agree Windows Phone 7 is a great operating system, however, lacks many features of matured operating systems, including but not limited to Multi-IM clients, better multi-tasking support.
I also believe that applications should stay simple - easy to use, get in, out and information from at the same time.
Facebook Chat will be integrated with a great contacts list supporting it.
I believe sorting by service, name, groups, and status are also great features, and as such, they are being integrated into Groovy IM.
Due to Windows Phone 7 not having true multi-tasking support applications cannot constantly run 24/7 as they can on Android or iOS. You must keep them open to constantly run otherwise Groovy IM will exit Chat Rooms, and log in at a set timeframe checking for offline IM's.
Groovy IM already has support for logging the things you chose and it will give you options to save the logs on your phone or through a cloud service.

Yes it would be possible to support Skype, Skype is planned to be added in a later release (Version 1.2).
The beta release (1.0) will not support Skype, and should be coming soon to those who wish to beta test.
I do not understand what you mean by "standby" mode on the phone. Do you mean when the user / application goes idle and the lock screen comes up? If so, yes, there is a way and a option you can turn on that will keep the application constantly running as long as it is opened and infront of the other apps.

As i understand, there is a way to keep apps open and alive in the background if the dehydrate-key in the registry is modified to not dehydrate background apps. i understood, this means that the app is kept in working state and does not drain its contents from memory. am i correct?

Thank you for your interest in Groovy IM.
As of this time, there is no official support from Microsoft for full background multitasking, and I do not believe Microsoft will be integrating full background multitasking anytime soon.
As far as dehydration of your phone, I do not recommend it, and I do not believe Microsoft endorses the "hack" either.
I cannot comment on dehydation, as I have little to no information on it.

I have not experienced that problem on my test HTC HD7. I cannot comment on your mobile phone as it may have the settings different than mine. If you wish to know more about "standby" mode please contact Microsoft. My application has a option to keep it from going idle however. When it gets sent back to the background it will open a notification thread which checks for IMs often.
Yes, I understand your concern and will try my best to keep the application launching quickly, however, have it have the features you and others want.

The Groovy WP7 service will be a secured service that will require you to enter your pin number for any modifcations on your account.

Many people are using this cloud based service now to store and retrieve sensitive account data and log files. they had the advantage of a long build reputation of a trustworthy software company. You do not have that yet.you will need to earn that trust with good software. You might want to wait for a later date with this feature. I for sure will not put login-information into any server-structure if I have no proof of its security.

The background is based on your phone settings (e.g. Light OR Dark).
The background border colors for groups are based on your select Accent Color on your phone (e.g. Blue).

Hi, your idea is very interesting!
I'd like to suggest you a feature, i.e. "virtual contacts". Let's suppose I have various contacts of a friend, being of various or even the same protocol (MSN, private Skype contact, work Skype contact and so on).
It would be beautiful to me to be able to group all this contacts in a single virtual contact, built as an ordered list of each contacts. Communication will happen with the first available protocol "behind the scene".

It's in the video app, but it only works on local videos afaik.... unless...someone hacks it...

I installed an alternative that works with youtube videos, streaming videos, as well as local videos, but the [email protected]#$ing app chooser is GONE from this phone. On every other tablet/phone that i've ever used that runs android, it allows me to pick which app i'd like to open up the video/file in. The defaults are cleared, there are no options, etc.
Whats going on?!?!!?!?!?

What app did you try? If it ends up working you should post a link in the app section, i've been wanting something like this.

Super Floating Video.
It works on every device i have except my Optimus...so either LG did some funky butt stuff with the app chooser--forcing youtube videos to be viewed in the youtube app....and the like: or their build isnt recignizing that there's an alternative player for it. Android itself wont present options if theres only one app available...but the issue isnt just with videos. Its with web page links as well....which is why i know that LG has done something stupid.
If it happened with videos alone, id blame it on the app.
But because it happens with links as well (we at least have the stock browser in addition to chrome), i know its LG's doing...its either baked into the ROM, a glitch, or im missing a setting somewhere. The latter 2 are highly likely. Extremely highly likely.
Popup Browser is the browser id like to use, however, ive installed firefox as well...and it doesnt even present me with that option.
IMO the browser needs some HW acceleration work, but aside from panning, moving and resizing is smooth and buttery as hell. Its especially nice for clicking on links in the G+, Facebook, or Twitter apps....you can view the page, read, navigate, or visit a site, and then close out of it without leaving the app. Its also nice for keeping a dictionary open, or other reference material while reading the news, an ebook, or other material. For added functionality, add a quicklaunch dock/bar to your notification tray....so you can always launch the app, even if youre not doing so by clicking a link.....for instance, if youre watching/streaming live TV or a movie, and you want to look of a movie or actress.
The video app is great.
The app can play video streams, and in addition to youtube, it can manage embedded software and hardware decodable files, as well as all streams playable via mobile video (H.264 and the like.).
Install either and let me know if you have the same issues.

Yeah, i'm not saying it was the app's fault, i was just curious as to what app you used. I'm pretty sure LG isn't doing it on purpose to lock anything down either, since I get the prompt for everything I should and I haven't seen this anywhere else. Sounds like you just have a really weird bug. Anyway, thanks for the app.

No problem. As far as adding functionality goes...id be hard pressed to find anything a manufacturer has ever really done for android in the past year (before that, too?) that wasn't a gimmick, and actually improved the device. Samsung did, however. Their implementation handles window management better, but LG's implementation would have been superior, in this man's humble opinion, because the transparency settings are key. Historically, LG has been week in the software section, and this just makes the opinion people have of them as a company even more vindicated. But the popup Video player is definitely a case where invention is the mother of necessity. I don't think I could ever go back and live without a popup browser and video player. It was kinda a goof; the fact that were forced to use third party tools because of laziness...in a era where almost all of our video watching on portable devices is done via streaming, playing YouTube videos is a must. I'd much rather streaming be built in.
And this isn't a unique situation...it is kinda unfortunate...their software isn't just weak...it's horrid. Exponentially more so than even companies like Archos. But they only fail in this aspect for a lack of trying. They're focused on the Korean experience, where they do well. Apparently North America is just the icing on the cake.
But these dynamics put in place some awesome potential. I also think that because of this, we could see one of the best Nexus devices ever made. LG is equally As impressive in comparison to Samsung in hardware, and both companies own their own display business, and advanced manufacturing nodes, allowing them to innovate on aspects where the devices of the future will be made. Their weakness in software makes them the PERFECT company for the nexus line of products. They get to focus on what they do best--hardware, and leave the software to the guys who do it best--google. Because of this, they benefit from a nexus lineup more than any other company could. I expect to see a Nexus tablet in the next year or so from LG.
Just as well, the Nexus name will land them something they'd never otherwise get in the U.S....market penetration, and mind share. They were unable to offer anything compelling in the functionality department before, but the partnership, with a promise to give them the latest and greatest set up possible, with an up-to-date pure android experience is compelling as hell. Hopefully this is the start of a pure android brand.
Its a case of perfect harmony....a company that cares about hardware, and produces some unique and groundbreaking technologies, that doesn't care much for/about software, teamed up with a company that knows how to provide the best software experience for any mobile device.
I know this is more than you bargained for, but I thought this discussion segued extremely well into what we can, and should expect from the future of our devices.
A pure android experience is probably minutes away for the Optimus G, once we get our hands on the code we need. Then, we'll have a superior device. And it'll work the way it should.
Anyways, like I said....there must be a setting I'm missing somewhere or something, I have the same exact configuration on all of my devices....so either its a weird, weird bug pertaining to a really specific use case, or a setting I'm missing-about after I had the issue, I literally put the phone down, and won't touch it again until I figure this out.

The app chooser dissapears after you set a default app. You can go into the task manager under the default tab and remove the default player. Should ask again.

Im using optimus l9 (which is similar to G) and qslide has been added with jb. It's available through notifications or via native app like 'videos'. It looks like this:
