Does anyone know of a solution where I can plug my phone in, play music on the car stereo and then make/take calls?
Would be nice if it was all integrated - i.e. that the stereo would pause or so when I'm on the phone, and the phone goes through the stereo speakers etc.
Need to get a new stereo anyway, so need the whole lot!

This is not a new stereo but works perfect for me. look up the Motorola t505. It is bluetooth handsfree and transmits wirelessly to your car stereo with built in fm transmitter. very strong fm transmitter. Music streamed to car stereo will paus when you make or get a call and the call even comes through the car stereo. Battery is very good too. Google it

I'm a little suspicious of BT though generally, not least because of my succession of HTC devices. I wonder if there's anything that just plugs in using old fashioned wires.
Well I am using the t505 with my HTC Touch Elf and it is the best thing that I have used in my car for transmitting music, since my factory stereo doesn't have aux in jack. I have tried using a regular fm transmitter directly from the phone but you get way too much distortion and feedback and radio interferance that way. I aslo do not have a tape deck in my car so that option wasn't available. For me I had to decide - Get a new car stereo with Aux Jack in or Built in Bluetooth, get the Parrot Bluetooth ( has to be professionally installed) or the T505. The cheapest was the T505 for me and it works better for me than I had ever hoped.
I'm hoping someone more technical than me will be able to help.
I've added an adapter to my car stereo that basically adds an auxiliary input. I plug my Fuze into the auxiliary input using the adapter that came with the Fuze, and listen to mp3's through the car stereo. This works well, but I don't really like having the adapter and cable always hanging from the phone.
I have a wired bluethooth headset that I don't use, similar to this:

So it's basically a bluetooth dongle with earbuds and a mic wired to it. I was wondering if I clip off the earbuds, and splice those wires into a cable with a headphone jack, then plug the jack into the auxiliary input, will this work for playing music over bluetooth throught the car stereo?
Yep, this works! But depending on the BT-profile you will get bad audio quality with mono-sound...
I guess you get better sound if using bluetooth-stereo headphones. They should have the A2DP-profile!
Is it possible to listen to slacker or pandora in the car THROUGH your phone?
I was looking at some posts and it gave me the idea to listen to it in the car which would be cool.
Would this be possible by just running slacker/pandora and then just letting it play?

I don't see why not. If you can stream it to BT headphones, it should stream to your BT car radio. One way for sure is if your car stereo has a 3.5mm phono jack. You can hook up with a cord and playback that way if BT doesn't work.
Car doesnt have bT and the AUX is there BUT we would need to go to dealership to make it actually work...no connection ;/ ...so I'm going with a FM transmitter (No tape deck either ) haha...thanks for the reply.
A BT-capable radio is less than $200 and provides the ability to make/answer phone calls hands-free, something most states are requiring by law these days. My Sony MEX3700BT works great and also has a USB slot on front for thumb drives as well as a 3.5mm mini jack for corded connection.

What car and what stock stereo do you have? might be able to help you out, i work a lot on cars and stereos.

yeah i installed a sony xplod stereo for my brothers car which he got for around $70 and it had BT, Aux in, and usb.
My car is a few years old and doesn't have a place to plug in my EVO directly for playing music through the speakers.
What are some of my other options? I've have tried the gizmos that try to send the music to an FM station and play it that way, but those were very static-y and unreliable.
Any other ideas?

desides a fm transmitter or if you have a cassette player nothing really. its the holiday season so maybe someone will you a gift card so you can get a head unit with aux ports and maybe bluetooth
Deck with Auxillary in, or A2DP Bluetooth.

A cassette deck now that funny stuff. Do you think anyone in the US still has a cassette deck? I remember the day metal cassettes were the best man they sounded awesome.
I really think your best bet is to buy a new deck. If your evo has the DSP manager it sounds great over bluetooth.

Actually, my 2007 Lexus GS350 has a cassette player, 6 disk changer and no aux port. I use the cassette adapter for IPOD and Evo.
My Ford Windstar 2000 has a cassette tape player, that's what I use
Ha my old 66 Ford Fairlane still has the dual 8-tracks I put in it way back when. Course it has been garaged for years, but i'm going to have to go see if they still work now! Had two of them so I could rewind one while still listening to another.
you need an aux input adapter wired into your cd player/stereo for BEST sound.
goto your local car audio shop and ask, they'll know what you're talking about.
PIE is a great brand if you want to install yourself.

Can you tell us what year/model car you have and what stereo option (if any)? There may be a way to wire a bluetooth adapter in via external CD changer inputs if that option exists on your factory head.

i have a sirius satellite radio (sportster 4 or 5) that has an aux jack in it. i connect a 3.5mm cable to it and the headphone jack of my phone and get perfect sound! only thing i have to do is pause the radio turn media volume up on my phone and it is just like a direct connection to my car radio.
A battery operated FM transmitter works without static, but they are increasingly difficult to find.
Get a FM modulator, they are cheap & easy to install. The sound will be better than most transmitters.

I hook my Evo up to my aux on my head unit through the headphone jack to play music on the sd card or Slacker and it's always low sounding. Much lower than my regular cd's.

I second this recommendation. I bought the Schosche modulator from Amazon for ~$28. Yeah, a new head unit with Bluetooth, HD, and aux in would have been nicer but also would cost a lot more.
The kit came with a small trim bezel containing the jack & a power switch; the bezel has a small piece of double-stick tape to mount somewhere on your dash. I pulled the jack & switch out, and mounted them directly in my dash, so it looks a bit more "finished."
The audio sounds good. There is a very slight hiss/crackle that seems to be coming from my car charger. If the charger is disconnected the sound is clean. The hiss is so small that I can't really hear it when there is music/podcast playing.
I would like to make a custom patch cable so I can wire in a microphone mounted up near my visor. This way I won't have to unplug the audio line when I get an incoming call.
I'm also using the Mountek mount described in another thread. It works well. Overall I'm quite happy. It didn't cost much and took less than an hour to install. I'm really enjoying Pandora & podcasts now during my commute time!
I've got the car dock, which works great, but I don't have a 3.5mm jack to my car's audio system. Anyone know of a good fm transmitter that works well with the atrix's car dock?
Just get a tape adapter if you can.

I have the Jabra Cruiser II. It is both BT and FM so it will work as a speakerphone for you as well. On short rides I just use the speaker on the cruiser, for longer I use the fm for my radio.

What myself, my girlfriend, and my dad are all using. It's a little more expensive than some options, but it's worth it.
3.5mm in, 3.5mm out, bluetooth, fm transmitter, usb port for charging (not sure about the amps on it), play/pause next previous buttons, fm/volume adjustment knob. Works great. Phone sync within 5 seconds of car power on and bluetooth on.
