Car Dock Mode - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have bought myself a car mount for my phone, but what I would like to know is, What actually activates car dock mode on this phone? Some people said their should by a small magnet in the holder that activates a mag switch in the phone? Is that true or should I go into car dock mode manually every time?

it's true "their should by a small magnet..."

According to this page it is the USB cord that activates the car dock mode. It probably has some resistors from a pin to another pin, so that your device knows when to change to dock mode.

The fifth pin is grounded in the charger (actually this is the wiring in type A micro USB plugs, but with the form factor of type B micro USB). The better alternative is to use Google's car panel - you can set it to open itself when connected to your bluetooth handfree, you can have any navigation software launched by it and best of all - it works in landscape (a huge oversight on HTC's part).

Car charger that can enable dock mode

Is there a car charger that has the usb shorted correctly so it can recognize car dock for tasker. I have the ATT one and it doesn't cause the phone to go into dock mode.

I thought dock modes were achieved with magnetic sensors? If it is based on a pin-out adjustment then a DIY should be easy.
I ended up setting tasker to turn on BT when plugged into power source and then look for a specific pairing. When it finds my stereo it launches the car dock app. After unplugging the powers source the BT turns off and the car app closes.

Hey how did you get tasker to connect to a specific pairing? I have a similar setup for streaming music but I always have to specifically pick it, I couldn't figure out how to make tasker find it.
I did research to find out the method the captivate uses. Magnetic or pin out. From what I can find its a pin out. I can't find a wiring diagram to show the exact pin out.

A quick "where is it" response, without detailing a profile build...
you can find it under the "State" section of the profile screen
1. launch Tasker
2. select "new"
3. create a new profile name and select "OK"
4. go down the list and select "State"
5. select "Bluetooth Connected"
6. enter the device name
Hope this helps. I seriously cant believe how awesome tasker makes this phone. It does what so many crap apps on the market do, but it does it for free!

There is no magnet sensor in the phone, so you would have to see the charger go to A/C versus USB.

That has baffled me for a few days. The normal wall chargers convert A/C to D/C for charging and USB ports always run on A/C. This leads me to believe that the data pins let the phone what type of connection it has. With 8 pins on the micro USB and no video output there has to be some extras used for something. I would be willing to DIY a dock cable if there were diagrams of the pin-out and docking was possible.

Yes, I and others have posted extensively about this - searching on car chargers should find some links - but basically:
First - all charging is 5V DC. The wall charger converts 120V AC to 5V DC - the USB port is 5V DC; Car chargers convert 12V DC to 5V DC. Next measurement is Amps - wall chargers supply about 700mA - USB is 500 mA. Many car chargers are 500mA some are 1Amp (1000mA).
The wall charger automatically connects the data pins so the phone knows it is on "AC" and charges faster.
The phone will limit the Amps it draws to about 700 - if you want your car charger to charger at maximum rate - you need to get a 1A charger and you need to short the data pins at micro usb end.
I bought a dual 1 amp car charger (2 1amp uSB ports - Griffin brand i think) and I took an extra USB cable, opened the wire near the micro usb end and connect the 2 data lines (black and red are power, the other 2 are data) together so they loop back at the micro USB end.
My phone now reads "AC charging" when plugged into my car. You will never get this on a PC USB port as it does not put out enough power.
But if I understand correctly it should know the difference between home dock and car dock.

Based on what Alphadog just posted the phone could determine if it is on a USB (pc/data) connection or an A/C connection. The outcome could vary depending on the specifics of the device being used to charge the phone but it comes down to the pin-out.
That being said, I was looking at some of the Tasker settings that could be used in this scenario. I was thinking for those who do not have BT that other triggers could be used. A good trigger for docking could use combos such as "power" and "orientation" or "power" and "location".
A second thought had me wondering about the compass. I have not looked into this but I don't see why you couldn't utilize the compass as a sort of magnetic sensor. If for example we told tasker to look for a specific scenario such as:
1. Receiving ac/usb power
2. Phone in Left Horizontal orientation
3. "Compass sensor north" pulling towards orientated left
Tasker would then launch Desk Dock.
....I know, Tasker does not have settings for current compass sensor direction. but could a specifically written app do this?
I currently use orientation and power for mine.

I have the car charger you can buy at att. It has a usb port I'll have to try it with the usb cable that came with the phone. If that works then I could have saved alot of money buy just buying a generic plug with usb
dont bother with tasker there is an app for that
use DockCarSwitches to turn bluetooth on when docked in car(car charger)
use Bluetooth Application Launcher to launch your application(Car Doc application for example) when a particular bluetooth device is paired
This Samsung car dock both charges your phone and activates the car home app.

I think you misunderstand the point of Tasker.
To get USB/AC under Settings / About Phone / Status from a USB Car Plug, you need 2 things: 1) A Car Plug with enough Amps (I use a model that has up to 2100mA in a single USB socket. Even runs & charges Android Tablets at same time) 2) a correctly wired USB to microUSB cable. (same place that sells the high power USB plug has this cable)
When I use these two together with my Captivate, it charges very quickly.
By the way, both Gigabit and Asrock motherboards are shipping motherboards with Always on, high power, USB ports.

That's incorrect. Unless, the dock the OP uses requires it somehow. It's much easier to short the Data connectors on the larger end of a standard USB to Micro USB cable to trigger the phone for AC Charging. It takes less than 2 minutes and requires no wire splicing. Linky

I'm sure someone could post the apk for us to download. Or send it to me and I can host it for free on a site of mine... the perks of working for a web hosting company.

[Q] Car panel doesn't open

Isn't the car panel supposed to open up automatically when connected to car kit? I use Brodit carkit and it never starts. I have configured the options in car panel to auto start when connected.
Maybe if I installed a 3rd party tool it would pop up?
Only does it with the official car kit. The USB plug is wired up slightly differently to provide the signal to load it.
You can modify or buy your own USB cable - but the standard brodit one is exactly that. Standard.

Actually they are both standard. The one is micro USB type A and the other is type B. Can't remember which is which but it has something to do with the grounding of one of the pins. When my Haicom holder arrives I plan to get a type A to type B adaptor (or type B to type A) and use my HTC charger. Hope it will work - no reason why it shouldn't) .

HOWTO - Enabling native Car mode

TL;DR: 10kOhm between ID and GND
Hi,
I just posted a Kidigi car dock fixed, and also investigated how car mode is enabled.
On previous devices I had, car mode was enabled by a small magnet in the dock, which triggered car dock (Motorola devices use this).
On HOX, this is enabled by puttin a 10kOhm resistor between GND and ID pins (they are adjacent).
Somebody could investigate what other resistances do - there will be at least a dock mode as well (I only tried that it is not activated by shorting those pins).
So if you want to make your car cradle activate car mode, you can mod your cable and get the full functionality of the original overpriced HTC @#$%.

Infuse Dock Reborn-Extracted Cirucit Board Ready For Your Dock

My problem was I already had a sturdy Arkon window mount for my 7" tablet. Easy in and strong and with the proper grip already in place (you can change them out for various size fingers to fit most tabs and phones; landscape or portrait.
I got the infuse dock, but did not want a second mount in my car and I did not want to take the S III out of the case. So, I took the circuit board out as many have done already, and retained the cover to support my cables (Male Micro to Female Micro, left angle so it faces down with my Galaxy landscape Micro port to the right bought from USBfirewire.com).
No I can change from tab to phone, no case removal and all the advantages of one cable connection to the phone with no case removal. Pics attached. Have fun.
As a side note, one of the reasons I could not stream line the assembly and had to retain the micro usb extension wire was the fact that the connector would not stay plugged into the dock micro usb male connector. I guess the weight of the phone in the dock kept it in place as id does not "lock" into the extension. Perhaps other brands work better. Also the usbfirewire.com cable is nearly twice the thickness of a regular cable and is pretty stiff.
I tried out the dock and connector today and it works great. I loaded Google Car app and it gives me the choice of S voice or Google Car app upon connection. I do find that using S Voice and stock driving mode, I sometimes have to go to the Dock settings and toggle on and off the audio out mode if I hear no sound from my car speakers

[MOD] Car mode USB cable resistance value

Hey guys,
i just bought a passiv car cradle for my GN. I need the car mode and doesn't finde anything about the resistor value between the micro pin 4 and 5.
While searching for it, i just had that value for the galaxy s i900. But the 620kΩ resistor doesn't work for the GN.
Am I wrong with the resistor? Is there another method to get into the car mode?
rgl
Download a car home app and run the app.
There is no microusb car dock for the nexus, only a pogo pin car dock.
