Reviews of Sprint's HTC Arrive - UPDATED - Windows Phone 7 General

http://www.wpcentral.com/sprint-s-htc-arrive-review
Sprint customers will be very pleased with the HTC Arrive and find the new Windows Phone 7 device was worth the wait. If you are currently using the Sprint Touch Pro 2 and like the fit and feel, we think you'll be very pleased with the Arrive. The Arrive will also appeal to those considering Windows Phone 7 for the first time.

Very positive. I was thinking of skipping this one and going with an Android for my on contract Sprint phone, but this review has pushed me back towards the Arrive. We will have to see what other reviews have to say.
Another review has rolled in:
A fairly positive review for the Arrive. Most of the negative things said are concerning the OS, and also the reviewers inability to understand how to use the OS.

actually, you can keep the screen flat down
just slide it out enough to reveal the whole keyboard

ima have to try that I myself ordered one already through wirefly for 80 adding a line. Ill have to see about the titled screen thing myself. Also any update on the Chevron unlock program, or any other one for the Arrive yet? Will the current one work for the Arrive.

i thought it was going to have the new milti tasking update

Why would you think that? Nothing has come out from Microsoft or the rumor sites to even come remotely close to giving that impression.

Actually it was suggested that it would be released with nodo through microsoft... All in all it is much better than the European device but still not in the top WP7 devices I've used...
Edit: I didn't really read... Yeah, no multi-tasking update for a little while.

I believe he is mistaking NODO for Mango. It does come with the NODO (copy + paste) update. It does not come with the Mango (multitasking) update.

Every review I've seen has been extremely positive. Only really knocked down two things:
Landscape isnt in all apps when the keyboard is out
Camera quality
Other than that, they all said it was a pretty solid device. Some said it was the best WP7 out now and others said it wasnt the best but was just as good as some Dell Venue Pro.
I just ordered this a few hours back and will be getting it on Thursday. Me excited. Me happy.

The majority of the time pocketnow and a few other popular tech blogs write off WP7 because they are dead set on android or iphone and if it doesn't have a row of 4x4 icons that are about as aesthetically pleasing as a school bus fire then they don't want it. I will tell you I own every US released WP7 device to date and this is certainly the best of HTC's devices. The build quality is solid, it doesn't have the feel that you're going to break the spring in the tilt mechanism like the European version had, and it's not too bad on the eyes though it could stand to be thinner. All in all it's a pretty good device. and certainly a great introduction to WP7. Remember, it's not about the specs. It's about how they use them.

Exactly. I don't understand why people can't see this. If gaming, and browser experience isn't any improved, then what is the point of having a dual core processor? I for one don't particularly care for faster processors, those will come in time, but I am more concerned about getting newer, more power efficient processors in these phones. So yeah, these have last years tech, but the OS is better utilizing it's hardware when compared to its competitors.

Preaching to the choir
No one seems to understand this but if an OS doesn't utilize their hardware properly then there's really no point in it being there. If WP7 can operate better than android on a single core let it be. You can mod and customize all you want but at the end of the day I want a phone that just works and WP7 does that better than any other OS. Does it have shortcomings? Most definitely but it's the OS that I feel has the most benefits that outweigh the shortcomings so until someone can top it I'm WP7 all the way. The Pro 7 is certainly worth it. Who knows, we may have better devices a year from now that blow these out of the water but for the time being it's my third favorite WP7 device and that's only because I'm hooked on the Venue Pro's screen and keyboard and the Focus' screen.

Ouch I feel like I am going to regret

My TP2 just shipped (I guess I'll recieve it in 2 or 3 days) and I just saw today that the Omnia Pro is set to be out in August
http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/12/samsung-b7610-louvre-rematerializes-specd-and-caught-on-camera/
Much more powerful processor than the TP2 AND slimmer phone
Aaaahhh I feel so bad
That said I think the TP2 looks better (but it's fatter..........)
TP2 still better IMO.
I only thinking of HTC Snapdragon based device after this.
Better ? Mmh I dont think so but I hope I am wrong
I also forgot about the better camera, and extra memory
But yeah I love TOuchFlo + the great support from XDA, so... at least that gives me a bit less regrets (Besides the keyboard of the TP is probably better (Though I dont care that much)

I read that the interface is (at least at the moment) sluggish despite the CPU, and I hate the ergonomics (tilt, keyboard) of the device. I'm curious about 2 things on the OmPro, 1) how much battery life the AMOLED screen saves over LCD and 2) what performance increase comes from the video acceleration it advertises. For now, I actually have more good to say about the cheaply constructed acer m900.
Specs aren't everything[/sacrilege].

True I forgot the AMOLED screen
Even if it doesnt save much energy, you can at elast expect it to ahve way better contrast than regular LED screens
Specs arent everything, but it is Samsung. You can expect them to do much better than Eten
Much better pics there:

Aaah it looks so slim compared to the TP2
Probably lighter as well I guess

That depends on what you mean by "better". Better build quality and specs, sure. But there's almost nothing on the OmPro that really draws me in yet. The TP2's processor is fast enough. TP2's RAM (not clear on what amount of memory is reserved for active processes on the OmPro) is enough to do what I want. TP2's ergonomics are untouched and its interface has been optimized and honed across several past models.
What does draw my eye on the lower quality Acer device is that, out of the box, the biometric sensor that was designed solely for checking fingerprints multitasks--without making room for a big dpad, Acer has still provided what seems to be a very usable and versatile navigation aid while still saving space and adding a nice security feature. I suspect the TP2's zoom bar will also be hacked for similar functionality, but the added options aren't there out of the box. The m900 pulled a little rabbit out of it's hat with this one, and I think it deserves props.
I also noticed that the m900 has a built-in menu for auto-rotation settings by program, out of the box. The TP2 needs an external program for that functionality, and I wouldn't be surprised if the OmPro did too.
I suspect a lot of people will be drawn to the OmPros based on the specsheet alone, and if that happens, I'm actually glad. That just means the TP2 will face some more price pressure, and I might get a better deal. If I sit down next to an OmPro user, I don't anticipate feeling envy so mush as pity, because long after they've started lusting after the next higher spec'd device (often probably for little reason other than some of the numbers are "bigger"), I'm still going to be profoundly content with my choice.

My Hermes is fast enough too... It's a bit funny to say you pity people going for the best specs [Though I understand what you mean: implementation is key]. "Fast enough" always depends on what you are aiming for... If you want to do gaming with your phone, you are always happier to have something fast
It's very likely the Samsung camera will be better than the TP2 (Samsung is a camera maker, and the camera is supposed to have an autostabilizer + a flash)
It is quite obvious from the pics it is also slimmer and I find it difficult to say you prefer a fatter phone in your pocket (Personally I dont)
The screen is quite likely to look better than the TP2's (However the "touch" part of the screen may not be as good) and will draw less juice (how much less, that we dont know)
I do agree the interface should be better on the TP2 (though we may see TouchFlo 3D adapted for the Omnia) and the phone looks better (I dont like the Samsung black & orange look)
As far as the price is concerned you are most likely right. However I wont enjoy the pressure on price since I already orderd my unit
In the end I thnk the TP2 looks a bit better, but fatter and with specs probably not as good, for maybe a hiher price than the one rumored for the Samsung
Dont take me wrong, I love HTC (It's my second HTC device), but this doesnt prevent me from being critical and not acting like an inconditional fan boy
Anyway TP2 will be enough for me to wait for a Tegra device (We'll need it if we want decent games... Typically the new iPhone will probably rock for this (Until tegra arrives and potentially proves to be better)
I am not sure it looks thinner by a lot. Maybe a few mm. Nothing that you can really wow about it. Samsung will reveal this phone, if its true, this month. You will have some real measurements then. HTC will also be revealing a line of new phones on 24 June. So maybe there will be more surprises. Maybe some Snapdragon goodies.
Don't be sad, I have just ordered mine too and it has yet to arrive. I still waiting for my carrier to call me to pick it up (should be today, fingers x). There will always be new things arriving and new technologies that will beat todays tech. So why be sad. Knowing that this upgrade for me is what will keep me happy for another 12 to 18 months puts a smile on my face already. By then, there will be 1.0+ GHz CPUs, GBs of storage space, GBs of RAM, Millions of colours and brilliant LCDs. Maybe a TP3 even.
This phone won't be available until 3Q. Look at the Omnia HD. It was announced back in February. It came out in June (only in some countries and not even here in Asia yet). So it took nearly 4 months. And the styling of the phone changed completely. So don't hold your breath on it. If the annoucement is gonna be made in June / July. You won't see the phone until October at the earliest and we won't see it until Xmas in Asia. Samsung takes ages to launch their phones over here.
So why wait and the long face?
I think the touch pro 2 looks better, and the design (especially the keyboard) is better. Apart from the processor, I don't see any improvements..
There probably is a long way to go optimizing this new processor also.
This is the first omnia trying to get to the bussiness people, so I am curious how that will happen. I never seen the UI but it sound really good. If it's really that good, I think it will be available via this forum for us too

Thanks for cheering me up. No reaso to be sad, it will be anyway definitely better than my Hermes (Cant believe all my friends switched from Hermes to iPhone...)
Anyway my purchase is exactly in the same purpose as yours: wait for mature, well balanced tegra or snapdragon phones with better screens, camera, etc... ie roughly 1 year from now

You are welcome mate!
There will be many of us sitting in the same boat for the next 12 months. Some will jump on and some will jump off. Hopefully support for this phone will be as great as the HD, so there will be many of more tweaks and upgrades to make this phone being 'THE' phone to have for 2009.
in my opinion, the TP2 will probably be the best in its class for the year to come even over any Samsung competition, mainly because of the stability and work put into the integration of the HTC software and WM OS. Samsung has great specs, but their software leaves a lot to be desired. I had an Omnia and a Blackjack 2 and they were extremely buggy, as with most WM machines I had. But with HTC Touch HD and onwards, they've really come close to making the OS as stable and quick as possible. The processor and specs look enticing on the new Samsung, but I'm confident that the TP2 will still out perform it in real life usage. (another case in point is that I had the Samsung INNOV8, the Nokia N96-killer...great hardware, but never came out with a new firmware and was always buggy and choppy to use).
So for right now, I don't think anyone should regret picking up the TP2 or Diamond 2...both excellent pieces of engineering. The real waiting should be for the next generation of snapdragon units...

Totally agree! I tried playing around with the TouchWiz and it is crap. Don't like it at all. Don't like the widgets and stuff on it where you can move things around. It makes it look messy. I was never keen on those moving around thingies. I know they are trying to achieve a desktop feel but it just looks weird on a vertical screen.

The device comes with DLNA, a connectivity regime that I gather is for displaying video between devices. I could understand an increasing need for speed for someone who wanted to store HD vids and TV-out them to an HD set, but there, I'd be skeptical that 800mhz would do the trick (which is part of why I mentioned being interested in how much performance you could get from the video acceleration mentioned in the specs) until I actually saw it in action. It's one of those things where, unless the vid accel is awesome, it probably works JUST well enough, and then in 6-12 months once the novelty wears and the defects really shine, the user is going to be drooling over some 1+ ghz snapdragons. Once you start looking at some of these devices on a price per month basis in situations like that, they look less attractive.
I'm not sure what games are available for WinMo that really push specs. Are you plugged into that? Is it just about looking for more hertz for better emulation performance? Or are there some serious native titles available that lag on current hardware or have settings you can crank up for better performance?
The thing is, there are tons of peeps who think 800mhz MUST be better than 500mhz, even though they have no particular application category where the processor is a real bottleneck. Clockspeed is, both in mobiles and desktops, a decreasingly useful metric for actual performance increases. Infrastructure is more and more important, and software optimization is the great undiscovered country in computing performance.

If you look at girth as a single feature, you're right, it's hard to argue. If you look at it as a balancing act between features, then the question isn't "fatter or thinner" but rather "fatter with better ergonomics or thinner with worse ergonomics". In this case I'm weighing the TP2's 5 row, offset, well-spaced (and potentially better tactile feedback) keyboard and tilt ability against the apparently (are there measurements yet?) thinner OmPro without them. Given that we're talking about a couple of mm, I'm totally willing to sacrifice thinner for the ergonomics. It is a personal choice, but not an indefensible one
The screen is quite likely to look better than the TP2's (However the "touch" part of the screen may not be as good) and will draw less juice (how much less, that we dont know)

Battery life in portables is a huge factor for me. It plays into usability in a big way. If AMOLED really delivers, I will be wooed, just not before I see hard proof. If Samsung can't deliver the type of resistive screen responsiveness HTC managed in this round, that might be wash.

This will be my very first HTC, and my very first winmo. I look at devices based on what they bring to the table, not on who made them (thus the Acer props). So I'm not trying to attack you for being disloyal , just attempting to reassure you that the two things you mentioned in the OP weren't necessarily worth hari kari.
If someone will really rip off some of HTC's best work in the very near future and throw in a snapdragon, well, yeah, then let the disemboweling commence.
Guys,
according to today's release notes Omnia Pro has 135MB RAM.
1GB is for ROM.
That's a far cry from TP2's 288 MB RAM.
If this is true, it's just not enough, regardless of the nice screen (AMOLED), potentially faster CPU (Mhz is not everything, needs to be benched) and nicer camera.
On WM devices RAM is the 2nd most important thing after CPU or your device slows to a crawl

Yeah Mhz is not everything (For instance I never ever owned a Pentium P4 ehehe) hwoever in this field Samsung processor have the repuation of usually being faster clock for clock (Again I agree with you it definitely depends on the architecture of the processor)
Just got mine today as said before. Let me tell you. NO REGRETS WHATSOEVER!
You will see when you get yours mate. Man, it's a beauty!
The guys gave you technical reasons why our tp2 is still better... mine is much more simple.. the tp2 is still prettier and sexier....
Is there kind of flash for camera in TP2? My X01HT has white beam turning on when activating "flash". Thanks.

Who's holding out?

Just out of curiosity, how many of you are holding out on buying a new WP7 phone until 2nd generation? I know for the average user, these specs may seem amazing, but for the advanced/techy users, it seems under-powered.This is especially because they're using a 2 year old CPU when a more recent one that has better 3d performance and battery life is out in the market.
I, for one, will be holding on to my Touch Pro until 2nd generation WP7 comes out. Anyone have any idea when that will be?
would like to hold out, but the problem here is my touch pro's backspace, space, 1, tab, and fn key has basically died out on me
You should use the swype keyboard. I never went back to the physical keyboard once I started using swype.
tried it
don't really like it
i still prefer physical keys though
but yah, i'm looking to get the venue pro. but it seems to look like the tp's keyboard, and frankly, i do dread it a little
If i had a decent phone today i would wait for second gen, but i'm on an HTC Magic now, running Android 2.1 and everything is soooooooo slow i feel like throwing the phone into the wall. Can hardly scroll on this forum on the phone because it's so laggy.
Have set my eyes on an HTC Mozart.
I'll definitely be waiting for the 2nd gen. All the phones looks pretty ugly IMO, not to mention the old processors....and the AT&T selection sucks.
I'd like to wait, but my Fuze is on life support. As much as I would like for the specs to be better for this first gen of WP7 phones, they handily beat the Iphones specs and most WM phones. I am buying a gen one knowing that I will be buying a gen two next summer. I am considering my gen one as a 'get aquainted' with the OS phone while I hold out for a stunner in '11.
http://designfabulous.blogspot.com/2010/07/htc-1.html
Well, we can dream. HTC just needs to hire this guy.
I think people that hold out aren't as tech savvy sad they think.
Understand that android is optimized to run on various hardware specs. While windows phone 7 was designed for this specific hardware.
The same spec phone running both operating systems won't be comparible. The overall speed of wp7, the quality of the apps, and the games will be superior to android even after the dual core phones release.
The only thing that could bump the android back up is strong min specs of the new version of the OS and market apps that are only available to phones with those specs. Developers need to also commit to designing apps for a very small market of those top-of-the-line phones.
Those are the reasons why my rooted nexus one, car dock, and desktop dock will be on ebay within a month.
I love android, but I am always excite to test new things. After all, one could always ebay the phone and buy another extremely easily. I don't see any reason not to try wp7 unless you are locked into a contract and unwilling to buy an unsubsidized phone.
Nah I'm gonna get the HD7 as soon as my contract expires in late spring. Currently have the Moto Cliq with Android. If MS makes a Zune HD2, than I might think about getting a 64gb version of that and get the latest and greatest Android phone, Iphone, or Palm Phone.
Definitely not digging android anymore;
*sluggish, having to constantly kill apps and restart the phone
*Multiple OS fragmentation means I missing out on a lot of apps
*No app quality control (sick of buying an app thats sluggish or just plain buggy)
*No Easy Desktop Sync like Itunes or Zune
*NO AUTOMATICALLY UPDATING MUSIC PLAYLIST - A biggy for me.
Also I have a zune pass and hate having to convert my music just because Android doesn't play WMA DRM.
WP7 minimum specs aren't all that, but better than the minimum of Android which is still 528mhz processor for Android 2.1
The little angel sitting on the right shoulder is saying "Wait, wait!"
The little devil sitting on the left shoulder is saying "Get it, what are you afraid of? Offline Outlook Sync?"
Oh it is so hard!
But on a serious note, as soon as I am sure that it will Sync with Offline Outlook or I have a non cloud solution that I can trust, I will get it.
There isn't going to be an ideal phone for me in the first wave, but I'm gonna get one soon. Ideally I want the Dell Venue Pro but with Super AMOLED instead of AMOLED, and a MSM8255 SoC instead of the QSD8250's. But besides that, I think I will be happy with the Dell. "Dude, you're getting a Dell"
Also I really want WP7 to succeed. So in order to get a phone those next 2nd Gen phones with the Dual Cores and 32GB of memory, that means the 1st gen's need to succeed. So I'm gonna buy one to support my long term goals.
the QSD8250 has still more than enough horsepower to be used today. don't just look at what speeds and GPU does a processor holds but also take into the fact how well the OS utilizes the processor.
IMO its best to get the first wave. By the time the second wave hits (say this time next year), none of the apps/games will be fully utilising the power of the new processors anyway (since majority of WP7 handsets would have the QSD cpu and that'd be where the money for devs is). So you'll have all this power yet nothing to make use of it (basically like the Galaxy S). It'll take about 6 months imo til games start utilising the newer processors and run somewhat subpar on first gen devices.
So IMO that gives first-devices from launch about 18months of excellent performance, before it starts feeling 'old in the tooth'. By the time first gen buyers upgrade in approx. 24months, there'd be the third generation CPU's hitting the streets, and that'd be able to run second gen apps with ease, and the whole cycle starts again.
I'm definitely waiting until this gets jail broken. And if Htc comes out with a slide out keyboard for it. Not enough good phone options for me. When phones similar to the tilts come back wp7 has got my full attention then.
At the moment, I just can't justify giving up my HD2.
It'd be amazing if WP7 gets ported to the HD2 and I will, for sure, boot it up. I'm sceptical about some aspects of WP7 and so would like to see what impact (if any) these aspects have on my day-to-day usage.
If all goes well, then I will consider a WP7 device early next year. Hopefully, by then we'll have had a round of updates for stability issues (inevitable) and some missing features added.
So, in short, I think I'll hold out till wave 2 (or at least until the OS has settled a bit).

Gonna get the new WP7 phone out of the gate, for sure. Then I'll be in a great position to sit back and wait for a 'dream device,' which I'm not sure will make it out before the holidays next year. If it does, I'll get it, but if not I'll have gotten my money's worth with the phone I'm going to get shortly.
I have no choice but to wait. I am on Sprint, so I can't even begin to think about getting one until they release theirs. And "sometime in 1st half of 2011" is pretty vague. So for now, I have to sit back and read about everyone's experience.
So hopefully, I will be reading good reviews.

Microsoft updates WP7 so any exploits will be patched in record time.
You can prolly refuse the OTA, but it can suck if that fix is bundled with a fix/enhancement you need...
Clear ur jailbreak and get copy and paste, or go without? Lol...

That's a truth with some modifications. Yes, the 8250 is more than powerful enough to run the OS and any games/apps released for it - it is however not powerful enough to playback [most] HD video and this is the reason why I'm disappointed by the current wave of devices.
I have terabyte upon terabyte of [mostly] HD video stored on my server which I am unable to view on the phone without re-encoding them. This is a process I go thru at the moment with my HD2 and I was really looking forward to a little more horsepower in WP7 devices so I could simply import then rather than spend a lot of time re-encoding them first.
Personally, I have to get a 1st wave device for development purposes, but I very much doubt it will replace my current HD2 or Evo as the day to day phone. Not only for reasons of hardware but also due to lack of services offered locally (no localized bing search, no XBL integration, no 'full' marketplace, no Zune pass and the list goes on).

Is anyone else coming "from" Android...?

I currently have the HTC EVO....and love the phone with a passion, but I don't love how basic the UI/Animations are on the phone and screen changes. It is super fast, but like all phones...it has it's buggy moments too. With the EVO I can change my UI with "home" apps like Launcher Pro which are more pleasing on the eye then the standard sense it comes with....but still lacks the smoothness and super graceful animations that WP7 comes with. The flipping tiles are just an example of some of the animations I am talking about.
Now I know that WP7 has it's short comings...but so did Android at it's launch as well as IOS, but overall it's a solid phone and super fast as well. WP7 will grow as the months and years pass, just as android did with 1.5, 2.1 and 2.2
I had to sit and think if I could do with out some of the better features the EVO has over the HD7, which is the phone I am wanting to switch to.
1. Do without the front VGA camera on the EVO (yes)
2. Do without the "8" megapixel back camera and go down to an "5" (yes)
3. Do without changing how my screen looks every bloody week, lol (yes)
4. Do without the 100,000 apps that are currently in the Android Market place (yes - as I only use several)
I guess the only thing I will really miss is the good friends I have with Androids that I play "android" games with online like wordfeud.
Am I alone in coming from what I think/thought was the best thing that ever happed to smartphone? Are there more people like me, that are switching from Android to WP7....or am I crazy insane and should stick with what I have because it truly is the best of the best?
I just wish Android could be gorgeous and sexy in it's UI as WP7 is!
I moved from a HTC Legend to a HD7. The main thing i miss is the google integration. Mainly google talk & google latitude both of which I used everyday.
Hopefully they will become available for WP7 in time.
Apart from that i'm happy i made the move. The OS is very different from android and really challenges developers to create visually engaging apps. Already lots of apps are available that weren't at launch and as the USA launch approaches I reckon the number of apps will be 2x-3x in time for xmas easily.
I love the UI and it's simplicity and simple but great animations. It really is a solid OS and although on paper it doesnt stack up against android, on a day to day practical level its perfect.
well it is all really a personal preference. I have been using WM since 5.0 (motorola Q) and had the omnia 1 and now the omnia 2. I don't really like android so I will be going to WP7 once it hits Verizon. But obviously you like the droid, but have some reservations. The question is does the lack of FULL multi-tasking, no copy/paste (until Jan) and things of that nature bother you? Obviously you have thought about those other things, so think on these, if they bother you then stick with the DROID, if not give WP7 a shot. As to whether Android is the "best of the best" that is a matter of opinion, no matter what anyone here says, so ask yourself, do YOU think android is better?
Thanks bean_ian and Omega RA....I have thought about the "no" full multi tasking and "no" copy and paste (until jan), and decided I can totally live without those & the other minor shortcomings mentioned a slew of times through out the internet and review websites.
The EVO is superior to the HD7 in many ways....but HANDS DOWN WP7 kills Android in how beautiful, simple, and easy to use the UI is! To me that is what I am buying the phone for, as I mainly use it to surf the net (for info on the go)...HUGE twitter head here, and I use Facebook alot too.
I like pretty, I will not lie...lol. Both phones, the EVO & HD7 are gorgeous body wise, but I want the VERY same when I power it on too.
I went from blackberry with the 8700, to the iphone 2g, to the iphone 3g, to the nexus one, and now to the HD7.
I have experienced all the ball-games in town and I am excited to try out the rookie.
If I dislike it, I will just go back to Android with a Tegra 2 powered phone.
Yes, I've just bought my HD7 and I'm selling my Desire.
Will use it as a gap inbetween Android 2.2 and Android 3.0 whenever that decides to come out. Let's see if the HD7 is enough to persuade me to stay with WP7 instead of selling it in about 6 months for a Android 3.0 phone..

The EVO is superfast, no doubt, 1Ghz Snap Dragon and all....but every phone regardless of "snapdragon" or not, has it's moments of buggyness.
NOT SAYING that WP7 or the HD7 will be bugless...it too has a super quick 1Ghz SnapDragon, and I'm sure will have it's glitches on the rare occasions. Point being (I guess) would be that the EVO/Android 2.2's speed is certainly "not" a factor or reason that I should to keep it, and not move to WP7.
Some animations include...the screen rotation, with android the screen just turns with no animation - BAM it's turned. With WP7 it turns fast but has a little animated wobble/bounce to it, as it settles into it's new position (very quick one so it's not obtrusive, but a nice touch) - small potatoes to most, but these little touches count to me.
Also the tiles flipping out when you touch a specific tile to "go into" that hub....the tiles fly away, and when coming back to the home screen the tiles flip back in a smooth beautiful way.
There are others, through out the phone that are seen in the slew of videos on the UI found on youtube.
There is just no real nice....smooth animation to Android. Some "home" replacements give it a try, like Launcher Pro....but it's still choppy at best.
Yea I'm migrating from android. Moto Cliq with 2.1 upgrade. Android is nice, but I sick of all the sluggishness.

"Android with a Tegra 2 powered phone"
I heard its going to kick everything butt out of the park. I have heard a plathora of new features that its going to come out with. I just hope to do release it to market FAST.
im planning on switching as well... android is great but its looking like the next windows mobile: clunky / inconsistant UI, no guidelines on hardware or updates making it go out of control with fragmentation (different processor arquitectures, speed, screen sizes, shapes, resolutions, etc.) makes it a mess to develop for without p!ssing a few people off because of incompatbility issues, OEM's still release 1. 6 devices today, and most are currently upgrading to 2.1 (wtf? ? isnt 2. 2 the current? ?) multiple app stores, really? poor quality apps when it comes to asthetics and function compared to iOS
AND THIS IS COMING FROM AND ANDROID USER AND LOVER **sorry but thats how i see it**
WP7 really interests me since microsoft will keep tight control on hardware and software thus giving us apple-like experience, and android-like hardware choice. i also loved how they provided all drivers for the snapdragon chip as a supported processor making it use its full potential since its tighter integrated with the OS unlike android where its like a one-OS-fits-all where the lack of optimization can make the strongest cpu fall short of the snapdragon (just like apple makes theirs so silky smooth with slower cpu's than ours) xbox live integration, and great developer interest also makes me sure that it will be a success. just needs time to grow but im willing to evolve with them...
im switching but not 100% since im stock with sprint(which i can cancel) so im on a nexus one on tmo running cyano nightly 226 and ive never seen android running this fast before, cyano really killed with 226 ..anyway im not a big fan of big phones like evo(which i own lol) and tmo is offering the hd7 same size...so i might give att a try with the surround or samsung
Really glad to hear other peoples reasons for leaving the all mighty Android and switching to WP7....definetly enlightening!
I started this post because I felt in my head that I might be trying to talk myself out of switching, with all the MS haters pointing out all the minor lacking issues WP7 has...albeit, it'll all be fixed in time.
I truly want a beautiful experience when I use my phone, not just a beautiful phone being pulled out of my pocket.
I am 100% certain that I will be switching carriers and phones on November 8th when T-Mobile gets the HD7...and selling my HTC EVO. "IF" and when Android comes out with a UI that has great animation and is not so basic looking, I might be back!
I am trying to fully understand this:
A major reason for you liking WP7 is the transitions?
To each his/her own but if you got sick of changing your UI screens I believe you will eventually get really sick of the screen transitions. That was the first thing when I saw the demo that I was praying that I could turn off when I got sick of it.
I am having a hard time accepting all of the initial shortcomings the more I am seeing the end result of these shortcomings. I love the hub style screens but I am not sure if it is enough.
I may end up choosing an Android phone. Maybe the rugged Defy.

Yes, the major reason I like WP7 over Android is the Animated transitions "throughout" the phone (not just the screen transistions) and the SMOOTH operations and function of the apps! That is just the major reason....the hubbs that have several apps combined into them is another reason, saving me time.
The functionality/smoothness of the Android UI is far from up to par with iOS and WP7...although Android crushes both is other areas, like the ability to change something. Although I like the ability to change how my home screen looks from day to day or hour to hour...at the end of the week, I'm still longing for a beautiful experience when I USE my phone, or do what I need to do on my phones OS.

Are you blaming Android for the sluggishness or the fact that the Cliq has a ~530MHz processor in a 1GHz world?
I'm switching to Linux because Windows 7 is just too sluggish on my PIII 900MHz.
------------------
Personally, I won't be making the switch, but that's neither here nor there.
Most every carrier will give you a return period. It's not like you actually risk losing anything (as long as you take care of the phone). Give it a try for your two weeks (or whatever your carrier allows) and see how you like it.
Two weeks is long enough to determine if you love it or if you find the transitions to be annoying as hell when being used.
At about a week and a half, I would try going back to the Android phone for a day or two. If you're annoyed as hell by the Android phone, then keep the WP7.
If you find yourself relieved to be back with the Android phone, keep it.
If it's about even, then think to the future. Is the Android phone likely to get an upgrade (either officially or through a 3rd party ROM)? Is the WP7 likely to continue to get upgraded?
Make a pro/con for each phone & decide which one you'll ultimately be happier with.
For me, the cons for WP7 are too many, but for YOU, it might be reversed.
Ultimately, what fits you better is what you want to determine & the best way to figure that out is to compare/contrast through actual use.
I've seen a LOT of phones demo'd that have super smooth animations, but in actual use, they suck horribly once things are installed on teh phone. Since the WP7 can't multitask, this isn't likely to be such a big deal, but it might be. Actual use is really the only way to know.
I wonder how many tiles you can get on there before it gets ridiculous

WP7 owners, love it, hate it, or ...

Unlike those of us in the US, others can buy Win Phone 7 devices. So what do you think?
I have not tested it yet as mine is arriving shortly.
I think that it does look good and that Microsoft has the right idea.
The only issues that I can see with it is the SDK limitations and the general os limitations.
i love it, it has it's limitation but it will get better.
Used an HD7 for about 30 minutes in the T-Mobile store here. Smooth like butter, and it has 16GB storage.
I'm definitely leaning towards getting one.
Finally an OS that performs like one should on this hardware. Can't even imagine what performance will be like on next-gen hardware.
Up until 28th November I was an Android Fanboy - G1 when it was launched, Desire as an Upgrade.
I now actually prefer Wp7 to Android and love the fact I went and bought a HD7. My desire is now untouched, I put it on Ebay
i just played a bit with one at a t-mobile store... (htc mozart)
very smooth handling in every condition
i dont like pinch to zoom in any browser i used before (opera, safari, whatever android has...) but i like it in wp7 very much
but then there are the known limitations and some of them i realy dislike...
if there was a way to use wp7 device as mass storage my decision would be clear pro wp7...
Had it for 3 days, love it.
Blazingly fast and super solid - yes a few things are unavailable at the moment but its only been out for a matter of days.
Genuinely excited for the future of this OS.
Thanks for the replies. Sounds great. I was hoping to move away from AT&T but, if the WP7 devices are good maybe I will stay with them.
BTW, does anyone have a standalone Zune and care to compare the functionality of the WP7? I have a Zune 80 and love the Zune Marketplace and Zune client.
Love it as well. I miss the the messaging apps available on iOS and Android and some apps are a bit slow to launch, but it is a polished OS especially for a 1.0 with a lot of attention to detail taken on it. In a way it makes Android look like a toy, Aesthetics wise, and it is much smoother natively.
agreed with the ones above, had my HTC Trophy for over 2 days now and i'm really liking it. I see the Trophy as the base model for all Windows Phones. There is no stand out feature in this phone at all, it's all minimum spec, but it works... exceptionally! Games are a little slow on loading, but that's ok, the gameplay itself is fine. This limitation is due to the use of microSD (which you'll probably see in the other HTC phones). But I don't plan on voiding my warranty, and my carrier throws an extra year on top, so i have 2 years warranty. I don't use it for music all that much as i'm more of a radio listener... and let me tell you, when i fired up the radio for the first time this morning... man was it a really nicely designed radio. Simple, only get a bar with the radio frequency on top, and you just scroll left/right, and find the frequency you want. Favourite it, and done. SO NICE!
hmm looks like im really gonna have to get this lol
all good comments.. i suppose to have my HD7 with me right now but my friend could not pick it up in singapore for me... now i have to wait till dec 1st as i cant make it to SG till then..
I LOVE IT. its that simple. There is a few very tiny glitches but i had that with android blackberry and sare i say it ios as well. I do have a couple of poiunts for a few people that moan about some missing features though.
Mass storage - why oh why would you want to use your phone for this i don't get it? the memory inside is for the phone not your pc. Get a memory stick they cost about £20 and will sit on your keyring they are faster and easier to use.
Flash - this is coming very soon adobe and Microsoft have confirmed this.
Copy paste - as above (i suspect the January update for both though flash may come as its own download)
Multitasking - just a battery drain and all the main features do this anyway, the phone is quick at swapping between apps. I don't get why you would want to multi-task beyond what it already does if anyone can give me a good example i will retract that but so far its just "cos we like it that we can" i personally prefer a battery that lasts unlike the desire.
removable storage - once again why would you want this? I have an idea don't buy a load of small cards just get one good one. You can argue that the on board amounts given at launch are poor (i to stated this) BUT, America will get the focus this can be upgraded so to can the dell. The HD7 can be also if you don't mind getting under the back cover. I suspect as with the hd7 we will find others. So there are options even for the most data intensive. Your phone is not a memory stick people.
I personally think wp7 has it right esp for a brand new os that has not even had, dare i call the January update this, service pack 1. I don't like to say i will never touch things again because the world is constantly changing but i will say for now i am so glad i sold my desire and got a hd7 it beats anything else hands down.
I just realized i was so busy fending the so called downsides i forgot to look at why wp7 is the best.
Xbox live - this is so good it makes my nuts tingle though it was a lil slow at first once it has had chance to sync everything up it is amazing. I can see all my avatar stuff in 3d i can see my mates avatars in 3d i can compare gamer scores, i can earn achievements on games i can send messages to my live friends and see what they are doing. Basically all the same stuff i can do on my xbox but on a phone. Plus they will soon have multilayer games not just turn by turn and intergration into actual xbox games.
Zune - By far and away the best music/media experience you can get. Makes iphone look old and rubbish. I have loved Zune since i got my zune hd imported last year. Zune software is easier to use then itunes. It is far better at managing your media and is so good at getting the track data. Plus unlike itunes if it cant find it automatically you can just find it yourself easy as and make sure all the tracks have the right names with a no fuss at all. Put it this way my itunes on my mac has about 80% of the right art my zune has 100% (and for about 8 months i had to use the mac as my main pc due to frying my motherboard so it is nothing to do with me not careing about getting it sorted).
Hubs/live tile - just genius i hardly use my facebook app as i don't need to my friends are asy to contact and find and my pictures are all in one place. Yeah you can collect data together on android but until you have used a wp7, and i do say if your unsure go to the store and play, its hard to explain why its so much better but it just is. updates are right there on the home screen and even the lock screen.
Speed/transactions - This is a zippy os everything is smooth and looks sexy, this isnt a big point for many people i know but, there is no better feeling then when showing someone an email or a text or anything on your phone and it flys there but at the same time looks like something from minority report.
The phone is fantastic. The system is very smooth! The zune feature wit zune pass is great. One thing though, notification sounds for txt and email are very, very quiet (HD7). I can hardly hear them

I disagree. There are cases where multitasking would help, one area would be instant messaging. Also, I have looked at most reviews out there and battery life is on par with similarly specced Android devices. For example, the HD7 vs. EVO/Desire HD. Even my developer WP7 devices battery lasts around the same time as my Captivate.

There is no denying the fact that multitasking would help in many cases. I am glad that MS never said they wouldn't allow 3rd party aps to multitask. I am sure it's already in development... may be being tested as we speak
Went from HTC to Samsung Focus, so far i do love the smoothness and speed. Active tiles are a huge plus and can see where this can be beneficial in various ways. Only 'major' things needed is tethering or turning the phone into a WiFi Hotspot (and would like bluetooth rSAP support).

You're wrong.
With Push Messaging, you get you IMs without the app even running. Multitasking IM applications is a huge waste of battery.
Do you even have a clue what you're talking about?
Also, the HD7 has a weak battery in it. It's around 1230 mAh, IIRC. Most decent phones have 1500 mAh batteries in them. Check that before you make a comparison. Also, use patterns on the two phones may not be identical. It's almost impossible to conduct a decent test for battery life outside of a controlled environment.

DO NOT buy the ASUS Vivo Tab RT

Oh my, what a horrible experience I have been having.
So I paid $650 for the Asus Vivo Tab RT with tax over the Surface mostly because of the dock, which ASUS is "claiming" to send out for free.
1. Claiming the free dock online has been impossible, the serial number would not register on their site for a whole week, emailing and calling them did nothing, said they were having server issues which makes no sense. Pretty much think they are making it super hard so they don't have to send it out. Was finally able to register, and I can't select it on the page for claiming the dock.
2. The microsd slot has a fake plastic piece from factory, and on mine, it is stuck in there and pushing on the spring to bring it out does nothing. Have to do a warranty claim so that they can fix it. Been two weeks since I got it.
3. The service is just horrible. Today I called and after talking for 1 minute (was on hold for 15 minutes), the guy hung up on me. Their call center is not in America, and talking to them is so painful, it really hurts.
4. The storage out of the 32gb is horrendous. After updating windows and Office, which has a BIG update, it has less than 11gb left, without any new apps installed.
5. The camera app does not recognize the flash, so the led on the back is useless. The camera also can only do 4:3 aspect ratio at 8.1MP, only does 16:9 at 6MP. Camera quality is not very good.
6. Tablet seems pretty slow, apps take a while to load sometimes.
SO, I would highly recommend getting the surface over this. If you have these types of problems, I think a lot of people have a Microsoft store near them, and I am sure the warranty service would be much better. I think the build quality is better too.

True, but it has a built in stand, + better build quality. I guess both their camera's suck.
I'm currently using vivo tab and I think the bugs and sluggish moments are more a cause of windows rt rather then Vivo tab. I had no issues submitting for the free dock. As for the camera I have rarely used a camera on any tablet so it doesn't bother me.
I to own a vivo tab, I got it by exchanging a transformer infinity, and I can say I am pretty happy with it, I was able to submit for a free dock (which they havn't shipped yet), I love the keyboard on it, much better then the surface one ripping, the speed is nice the quad speakers are really nice (please come out with vlc for this it screams for it) over all I have been pretty happy with mine.
I don't know. After the horrible experience I had with a Asus Prime and Infinity, both returned within a week, I would never buy another Asus Tablet - They just don't know what they are doing when it comes to Tablets and their QC is horrible
The more I use my Surface, the more I understand MS' plan. It may not be the fastest quad core, and camera sucks, but they chose stability over flashy specs. What it can do it does very well. I have not had one crash which was a constant thing on the Asus tablets.
As far as the display - It looks great to my eyes even if the resolution specs are not high - There is something to be said about the contrast ration and the bonded screen.
As far as camera - I haven't even fired it up yet, but can see it being useful for teleconferencing but that's it. I wouldn't want to wave a 10" tablet around to take a still picture of my kid like others do, but that's just me.
Considering the Surface has only been out 2 weeks, I am very impressed with its stability and limited bug fixes that need to occur from a firmware standpoint. With the Asus tablets it seems like I was always hoping the next firmware update would solve major issues and they never came.
Still not able to submit my dock claim online, their support has yet to help. Frustrating.

With both Surface and Windows Phone, MS seems to prefer highly optimizing for an older ("tried and true") chipset over adopting the bleeding edge.
That makes sense vs. Android (which often has the latest hardware, but to little benefit), but Apple is able to push hardware boundaries (iPad 4's A6X demolishes every other ARM phone/tablet in CPU + GPU performance) while maintaining stability.
So it's nice that MS is able to get solid performance out of older hardware, but consumers don't see any benefit from that (it's not like Surface or WP7/8 devices are notably cheaper than Apple's offerings, or get any better battery life, etc.), and one wonders what'd be possible if WP8 or Surface had something more powerful (like the S4 Pro).
In the case of Surface RT, one factor that might've influenced MS' design choice (and Asus' for the Vivo Tab RT) is that only Nvidia has been shipping out quad-core ARM chips in volume for the last 6 months. Qualcomm only recently started ramping up the S4 Pro quad-core production, so that probably presented a riskier bet.
Though admittedly, Apple's been doing this a while, and they control much, much more of the supply chain than Microsoft does, so they can probably afford to be more aggressive on the hardware front.
Yeah, I also have a Vivo Tab & I have no issues with speed or responsiveness. I have numerous devices, all upper tier & my Vivo is just as fast if not more so than any of the others.
As for the LED flash, I talked to a buddy (won't mention where he works) & discovered that the camera driver is BETA. It is in the developmental stage, ALPHA really, so it does not work for the majority of people. I don't mind that so much, I have always been an early adopter & aside from the flash issue, my Vivo works fantastically. Of course I think they should inform consumers of issues like this so you don't think it is a P.O.S. that came broken out of the box. Ideally however, I don't think it is a great idea to release unfinished products onto the public to be used as beta testers, but now you know why the dock was free.
At any rate, I got mine for 499.00 due to a price match here in Texas, so I am good & overall pretty happy with the Vivo.

I am not sure I agree about Apple up until recently but I have not followed Apple on the Ipad. Now that they are in the 4th generation of their Ipad and control the market, that may be the case that they are using the most advanced, but when they first introduced Ipads and earlier generations, they were not very cutting edge with processing power. It seems like they are now doing this because they have to show some technology jump every year to get consumers to buy the new model.
but we also know MS chose to limit the processing of the Surface so they could release a Surface pro as well.

Except that the Surface and Surface Pro run completely different processor types. MS could have thrown a quad core S4 in the surface and the Pro would still blow it away with a Core i5.

How did you do that?
I went to http://event.asus.com/Vivotab/Mobile_Dock/
but I'm stuck at the 3rd step: I can't see a "Mobile Dock Apply & Inquire" anywhere.
quick question for anyone that has the Vivo RT... does your windows logo light up?

Nope.
I was able to apply for the keyboard dock without any trouble as well. vip.asus.com and register the tablet. I love this think in my truck on a ram mount with a bluetooth keyboard. I can open my excel sheets for work without any problem and the netflix app is a million times better than the horrible android app.
Flash playback is also a million times better than android. It has built in support for smb shares and dlna servers. IE10 flies compared to chrome on my n7.
Sorry you're not enjoying your Vivo...

I see it light up when I play in the store yesterday.
I just really think the warranty service is horrid, still have not been able to register and it doesn't seem like they will do anything at all, blows my mind.
The windows logo at the bottom does not light up for me.
The only thing a couple of things I agree with:
The sdhc micro slot you have to be very careful, it's spring loaded and if you push it to hard, it will get stuck. I managed to get mine out.
The space that it takes. It takes a lot for RT and for office. But it is the same with Surface.
Other than that, I had the Prime and the Infinity and this thing it's way way better than those tablets. If you are a business user and you use office programs, trust me you will love this tablet.

While not that obvious, are you outside of US/CA? The mobile dock claim is apparently online available in USA and Canada which they seem to "forget" writing on the event page. -sigh-

Italy, but they publicized that here too.
Not just over the internet but also on newspapers.
Did anyone get their dock yet? I applied for it 10 days ago and see no change. Also curious really if the windows logo does light up for anyone
