I think so and I will tell you why. I have been following this phone since it was announced long ago. I to have been a proud HTC device owner but these days I am not so proud anymore.
I am a Windows Mobile fan. Currently I am using my old trusty or not so trusty these days HTC Kaiser/TYTN2. I became a big fan of the tilt feature. I am a tmobile user so back when the Kaiser was released not having 3g bands was not an issue because tmobile did not have 3g. I bought the Euro version and paid top dollar.
Since then its been hacked and modded to reduce glitches and increase speed but lets face it. The keyboard is worn and almost all keys require a super hard press due to wear and tear. Also the screen is tiny by todays standards. I didnt buy the Euro version of the TP2 because I live in the US and 3g is now an issue. So I waited for the tmobile release now confirmed for aug 12th. Right around the corner!
Those of you who didn't wait seem to be reporting endless bugs and glitches not to mention hardware problems. It is driving me nuts to the point that I am shying away from the TP2 hype. I have been following all the TP2 threads here and its bads news after bad news. Very different from when you all 1st got it.
Please someone speak some positive stuff otherwise I may end up holding onto my Kaiser for another year. Final rant.....the specs could be better. Damn Iphoney has an 800mhz processor and HTC just holds back!
I absolutely love it. I have not one problem with it, except for the battery door. I had to modify it a little but know its fine. Out of the 4 HTC phones I have owned, I think this is the best by far. Good luck with your findings.
Although I won't argue with you, the touch pro2 is a great phone for what it's intended for which is business users. It is lacking a bit hardware wise for multimedia and gaming, since it pretty much has the same processor and memory as its predecessor. It is for this reason that I am still trying to decide between the TP2 and samsung omnia II since it has the faster processor and beautiful AMOLED screen. So if you are shying away from the TP2 I would recommend the omnia II or the omnia pro (has hardware keyboard). Even though it annoyingly lacks a built in stylus (but thats just me).

Its probably not wear and tear. Its the same thing that happens with TV remotes. Over time, the oils from your fingers seep through the buttons and interfere with the contacts. If you were to take the keyboard appart and wipe down the contacts, no garauntee, but I bet it would work like new.
i think most of the problems people have (including myself) on their TP2 is 3rd party softwares imcompatable to the new UI on TP2. hope HTC will offer an update for TP2 sooner than September.
if you turn away from it for Samsung OmniaHD, make sure buy it from a local Samsung stores or from your mobile operator. i've been in a deep problem trying to get my Omnia i900 fixed. i bought my i900 from an idiot ebay seller named Cutrategoods70. when my i900 bricked from a firmware update, i tried to contact that idiot, never get a reply. i emailed SS service center in UK (coz SS US & Canada never heard of this model), thay told me to send to them. 5 weeks later they sent it back & said they not support "foreign unit". emailed SS Singapore & Malaysia, they said the same thing. Becareful when you buy a Samsung on ebay or internet stores

I think is totally normal to see so many posts about defects / bugs. Usually, peoples who post threads here need help with something. If everyone posted a thread about "Everything's fine with my TP2" when their TP2 is working flawlessly ... well... it would be pretty useless to do that.
Think about it : it's normal to find broken cars in a car dealer's garage. It doesn't mean the car model is crap.
I second that. You will normally see threads asking how to improve things or how to fix things.
Most of the posts here are when people need something, find something that they think could help others, and that's about it. The closest thing you can find to general chat would be the speculation on future support or release dates.
In forums for my last phone you saw threads on how to fix things, and for new software made for it (as a closed platform it had to be hacked and forums where the few places you could get software for the OS, unlike Winmo).
If you'll notice many of the threads are duplicates, and some of the complaints are somewhat invalid as the phone was never designed to do X thing (a prime example are the complaints that the Euro version doesn't support North American 3G bands.
Every phone will have defects and problems unless it's a very well built dumb phone. The question is, just how many people are having said problems, and out of how many satisfied customers without those problems?
Like vakbrain said, you're not going to find a new thread singing the praises of the phone from every person who is happy with it. It'd be extremely tedious, boring, and space consuming.
I love my TP2. I bought it SIM-free so it was quite an investment of cash, but I think it was worth every penny. It has the odd glitch here and there, but then so does any piece of complex modern equipment. I'd fully recommend it without any hesitation at all.
I think my TP2 is great! Ive alerady installed some handy apps to it. Havent had any issues with the device itself really, more like things relating to it. Finding a Good belt clip case for it seems to be a challenge, and Finnic isnt finished yet, so it runs like crap. I would have liked to have a 3.5mm jack on it, but im dealing with the adapter. I do wish TouchFlo had its own Slide to Unlock on it, but meh. i have s2u2 for the moment.

hi Lyian, could you please tell me does s2u2 work ok on yours?
i installed the WQVGA v2.04, it doesn't look right to me since everything so small & sticking together. VGA version look normal on my screen. other thing is when i set On Battery Power>Blank Screen on Talk, it works once, try the 2nd time the screen off then back on again. any idea to config it right?

I am using S2U2 on mine and it works fine. I am using the VGA version and it's flawless.

Thought I'd add a comment.
The one big difference between my Touch Pro2 and every other HTC phone is that the TP2 works extremely well out of the box and while some people are annoyed with all the bundled software (i.e. M3D and it's incalculable extensions) I actually think that this makes is a better device and would rather have more of this than less.
The point is: It does everything I want it to almost out of the box. This has not been the case with any other HTC device I have owned/used.

I wouldn't recommend the OMNIA II or PRO because they have only 137MB of RAM. That's hardly enough to run any software. I was really looking forward to the new OMNIA phones but it's a big disappointment with the lack of ram. I do admit other specs on the phone looks great but without the right amount of ram, the phone is very limited.

Had my TP2 for just over a week now, so still getting used to it but I've had absolutely NO issues with it, so far it has surpassed my expectations. It seems fast, responsive and I like the functionality.
The guys who point out that people write in to forums with problems are absolutely correct. People don't just write in to say "I love it" most people here seem to be advanced users, happy to tweak and hack their phones to get that extra 10% out of them.
I'm a business user, I don't anticipate playing many games (that's what the DS/PSP etc. are for) and as a business user I think this phone rocks!

Well, I haven't gotten a TP2 yet - still waiting for AT&T to release theirs - in the meantime I'm living with my 2.5 year old Virgin Mobile USA prepaid phone, but ready to make the leap to a contract.
What I can say is that the phenomenon where everyone writes in to a forum (especially a big one like XDA) about their issues makes the problems seem much worse than they actually are. For every person posting here about a problem there are at least 2 more that have had NO problem and wouldn't even think of coming to an online forum to solve issues with their phone.
For example, I bought an Asus EeePC last fall, and went to the premier EeePC forum at the time to see what others were saying - it sounded depressing too! Everyone with issues. Then I realized that A) people wouldn't go to a forum to solve a problem if they didn't love the device and wanted to keep it, they'd just get rid of it if they didn't like it, and B) the people who come to forums are device tweakers who must have things just so (I'm one of them too) and thus are looking for feedback regarding their particular pet peeve or issue caused by the one program they just MUST use. People complained about cracks in the hardware, or messed up keyboards, or whatever, but I've thrown my EeePC 1000H in and out of airports plenty of months and it has yet to be less than 100% satisfying, other than the $150 drop in price over when I bought it 10 months ago!
So, what I'm saying is, this is a phenomenon unique to the interwebz and electronics junkies in general, so don't be discouraged by all the negatives around here, in the end we're all just questing to make an amazing device even closer to perfect.

I must agree with Andrew. I own about 15 HTC phones, starting with the Wallaby, back in 2002. When I unboxed my TP2, I immediately thought 'what do I have to modify now?'. But it worked perfectly out of the box and i havent modified anything. I only installed my connection and Coreplayer... Simply good.
One flaw however is the resolution, which is incompatible with some of my software. But those titles are not vital for me.
So, now I am waiting for the next big hit... HTC SUPERSTAR...where are you??????

The WQVGA is the wrong version for the TP2, you want the VGA version (WQVGA is for smaller resolution phones like the Tilt)
I would say it does work 'ok' on mine. I do have an issue with it here and there that i wont go into here, but for the most part, it doest what i want it to, which is, to keep me from accidentally calling people lol.
OP needs to stop worrying, TP2 is a fantastic device and also get off the apple hype bs, iPhone doesn't have an 800mhz processor lol, more like around 600 for the 3GS, even less for the 3G.

I've used WinMo since the days of the Velo and upgraded from the Tilt to the Tilt2 and I think I'm sick of Windows Mobile trying to figure out what it wants to be. Since the Tilt they took away the dedicated camera button and the option to use led notifications. I wanted to try another ROM this weekend but I can't Hard-SPL. Won't work for nothing.
As per iPhone vs this thing.
Phone comes is no storage space.
(I need to pick up a 16gig card for $40. iPhone comes with 32gig in this price point.)
The phone starts at 85% and I can't run more than one app.
(I killed TF3d push and the proxy to get back some ram)
I can't hear the other person. The earpiece is totally muffled.
(Will probably need to replace phone.)
Caller shows as "unknown" during call.
HTC notification stops working and I get the WinMo bubble so I have to reset.
Browsers suck. Apps suck. Marketplace sucks and I think installs to device memory only.
Did I miss anything?

You going to be transferring movies or songs with your 32gig iPhone? Only place your going to watch them is on the phone. Look at it another way you now cant have removable storage if you get an iPhone.

I personally like this browser over the iPhone, the pinch feature is nice but we have a zoom bar. Get at&t in the Chicago land area and you will see how much at&t's net work really sucks.

Well the iPhone will be better for you then, since Apple knows exactly what they want you to do with their phone, whether you like their decisions or not.

Some improvement noted after changing "Treble Level" to "
Very High" in the "HTC Audio Booster" Section of Advanced Configuration Tool v3.3
I wasn't destined to hate this phone.
This is probably the best design on the market right now. Hardware wise this things blows away the iPhone except for the storage. This thing is pretty slick but I'm having problems using the device and you guys are getting all defensive.
I made an educated decision and chose this phone but I'm having a whole bunch of problems which I guess no one else is and this phone just doesn't feel up to the competition. Even Android does more than this thing.
All your complaints have easy solutions for anyone willing to put in even a small amount of effort into searching for and applying tweaks and/or adjustments. If you're not willing to do that then you belong in apple zombieland.
Nothing against the iPhone (I actually own a 32gb iPhone 3GS), it's just some people need to stick to something that works a specific way with little to no need of intelligence to get it working right. Sounds like your there target customer. No offense intended.

dude keep the tilt 2, take it from me. I have been using WinMo since the Hermes, had the tilt before this, then I used my upgrade and decided to try out the iPhone. I picked up the iPhone 32 GB 3GS, a case, and a car charger.
After using the iPhone for less than a day, it was very obvious that it needed to be jailbroken in order to have some features that I have become accustomed to. So I jailbroke it, downloaded Cydia (which is the 'underground' app store for jailbroken phones), and tried to make it work. Long story short, I had it for 10 days before I needed to come back to WinMo. Apple has iPhone users by the nuts, and because of that the phone is extremely restrictive. Basic features like changing the background, or being able to have more than 1 (can still only have 2 max) app open. Not to mention Safari does not and will most likely not ever support Flash. There aren't any browsers that do, and there's 1 app that supports a hand full of sites. Not yet break, and other popular ones.
Jailbreaking and apple is like cat and mouse. They release firmware updates regularly and it usually take several weeks (give or take) until somebody creates a jailbreaking app. For those weeks you would be forced to live without your needed apps......unless you hold off on the update. But the thing with holding off is their last few big updates came with features that I've had for YEARS. Example: PICTURE TEXTS!! MMS!! I mean come on, wtf is that?
The battery life was the deciding factor for me. My phone would have 100% charge around 2:00 AM when I would go to bed and by 8:30 AM it was down to 91'ish. Throughout the day the battery would be extremely low and require a charge. To be honest with you the battery life is despicable. That thing needed to be charged more in 1 day than I would get in my tilt all weekend, I kid you not. It's that bad. Even my die hard iPhone friends always ***** about how crappy the battery life is.
I would say hang on to the tilt 2 for a little bit longer. I'm really diggin the Touch FLO 3D interface. I never really ran it on my tilt because it was always a little laggy, but it's smooth like butter right out of the box. I want to hold off flashing ROM's for a while but I know it's only a matter of time. There's a lot of good ones out there, make sure to check them out. If you are having trouble Hard SPL'ing I'm sure if you ask on the forum, it will get answered.

There's a handful of other ones you can try too.

I have both phones - iPhone 3GS & the Tilt2 (& others). Totally agree with you on the restrictions and the suffocation I feel every time I use the iPhone. But again, it is for a certain market/usage scenario. Nothing against that..
But the battery life is definitely not as bad as you saw. Before iPhone OS 3.0, battery life sucked (I stayed back on a very old 2.x version). To stretch battery, I kept all radios (Wifi, 3G, etc) on manual control and switched them on as necessary. Things are definitely better with 3.0 - all the radios are on Auto now. I dread going to 3.1 or 3.2. I'm staying put for some time now..
I love WM and was waiting for the Tilt2 (My first PPC, touchscreen/keypad device). Google's lack of love for WM saddens me, but hey, there's always another way - thats what makes WM special..
Interestingly, I'm (sorta) having a battery problem with the Tilt2 on Stock ROM. Battery full charge lasts me 1.5 to 1.75 days max. I want to get atleast 2 full days on the fresh/brand new battery. I'm playing with the settings in the Advanced config & Touch Diamond2 apps this weekend to see if I can improve on the battery life. Again, not a biggie as I can always get a second battery with it's own charger. I'm still in the "optimizing" mode. And there is always the path blazed out by our esteemed cooks.. ^hat tip..
superrrguy, WM takes time, but hey you can get what you want.. iPhone (even with the app store or jail break, etc) is what Steve wants for you. Again, not a bad thing. You need to decide whats your thing..

Same here. There's no fix for that on Tilt 2 yet. (only Touch Pro unlocked ver, which doesn't seem to work for Tilt 2). Also the "unknown caller" issue has no fix either yet. The stock browsers are pretty bad too. Using Opera Mini, Skyfire or flashing a new ROM will solve. It takes a little patience working with Tilt2 but is worth it. Still love it

I've killed about 60% of it, and now I have 35% available when up and running, which sounds aweful, but this phone does more with that than any WinMo phone I've had since the MPx200! It flies!
All the other issues are either faulty hardware or easily tweeked - look in the forums and you'll find the fix to your issues.
You won't be able to change ANYTHING you like on the iPhone, so don't switch unless it's Nirvana to you, or you are willing to give Apple total control over your phone. Your choice, but either way, please, less winging and more action, many others have made the same helpful suggestions yet you persist in crying over the same issues that you could have fixed yourself by now. If you're a noob, then welcome, but please say so, so we can offer more basic advice.
Either way, good luck, everyone deserves a good phone that they like!

im using miri's 6.5 manilla 2.1 rom and its 65% when no program is running -____-
I think one of the problems of built-in memory is if the phone needs servicing for some reason and the phone cannot be turned on and you cannot delete the personal data of the phone, then you risk the data will go to the wrong hand.
For TP2, I would simply take out the SD card before I would send the phone to any service centre.
The Tilt2 is a powerhouse workhorse for the business oriented consumer. The iPhone is a toy. Do you want to be associated with all those teens at the local mall carrying around iPhones? I tried out the iPhone. It is definitely fun for the games but I was not able to be productive on it. When I exchanged it for the Tilt2, the AT&T clerk could not understand why I would want to trade in my iPhone for the Tilt2. The Tilt2 is NOT for the average consumer. You have to tweak it to get it to work to your liking.

About the earpiece sound quality issue, mine sounds great (out of the box). So I suspect the OP has a defective unit.

I really felt this.
I had recently upgraded my ATT Tilt (original (1)),Tilt1 if you prefer, to ATT Tilt2.
My experience was less than preferable.
While others suggested that I would be happier with another ROM, Black Berry, or (ugh,UGH, can not put in bigger caps) iPhone. I have worked with Windows Mobile, as well as others on this board, before it was a phone.
I think I was issued, initially a piece of crap.
Because of my response to this I had to take some crap.

I actually bought two, the other for my wife. We both, had been suffering for years, with different Palm devices. I decided on these for two reasons. . .my fat fingers just didn't work with the small keyboard buttons any longer, and it had a MS OS. Like you, have been dealing with MS since DOS5. I knew what I was in for and, I knew I could tweak it. Already using Total Commander and cleanRAM. It's was a little advanced for my wife until I insisted she READ THE MANUAL. She also had an older (Cingular) SIMM. Once we had it changed out even she responded with a "wow, what a difference". We both love our Tilt2s.
Have been reading here for a week and will prolly read for a couple more before I break something I need an assist with. I've been with AT&T since 97. I hate them, but like the last female at 2:00am, there easy to deal with, so I keep renewing.

After a couple of months and a final equipment failure, ATT shipped, and I received today a replacement.
I am avoiding, if I can, adding any software soon, like tonight.
My experience so far, with replacement, has been more than I expected.
I work very hard during the week and from Friday evenings into the weekend, I really like to think less.
Before Monday, unless anyone asks about anything specific about this equipment, software, or ROM, I will be rebuilding to test all.

I too have been with SouthWesternBell-Wireless-(Cingular) since '96 and I absolutey loved the Service I got, I used to hate how sprint had all the cool phones, I even tryed Sprint for a month awhile and kept my SWB line on just in case, it didn't take long and I Cxd. Then Cingular started coming around with good phones that competed. The Day ATT and Cingular merged is when it all fell to Crap, The service is still good, but the Customer Service is horrible, the care for what the customer wants is horrible, yes we have decent phones but they are almost outdated by the time we get them. I F'ing hate ATT , and am probably after all these years gonna switch to verizon. They deserve to lose everything they have, when they no longer care for the customer, unless you have a stupid iphony which is so easy to use, I say it's for simple minded people that wants square holes for square blocks. As far as the TILT 2, I too went from TILT1 to TILT2 , iskipped the fuse because i felt it was a rushed piece of crap. But I have very little complaints about the TILT2 , and after putting on Mobile Shell and deleteing the bloatware it runs smooth. I only hated it took so long to get it. So to Sum it Up i think the TILT2 is a very good phone if you know how to tweak it, and ATT Sucks. I wish Cingular and there Care would come back !
I pretty much agree with everyone. Came from a Tilt to a Tilt2 (no such thing as Tilt1 people) and I think it's a big improvement. Yes AT&T sucks, but I don't need them or their customer service. XDA is my customer service! The keyboard is way better and you can't complain about a bigger screen and faster processor (though it's still not fast enough, e.g. HD2). No phone really lives up to it's potential straight from the carriers except possibly Android phones. After a new ROM this phone was definitely a keeper for me. Looking forward to an HD2 or even better an HD3 when available though (1.5Ghz processor, Mmmm!).

go to this page , use file explorer and delete all listed, I didn't do the reg edits but it's had no effect at all on performance. it frees like 50mb and makes your device much faster and smoother. You don't have to delete all, also later you can hard reset and bring them all back if you'd like. I hope this helps, let me know if you need anything else.

This is pretty difficult with ADD and a tabbed browser
look for CrudScrapper. It is an app that removes the bloatware from the Tilt2. Great little app.

Unlike kimtyson, I understand the point of this post... to complain about AT&T and the Tilt2. With that said, I don't know what is supposed to be accomplished by the post (unless AT&T and HTC CEOs read these threads regularly).
For what it's worth, here's my 2 cents (more like a penny). I love my Tilt2. Yeah it's slow sometimes, but the customization abilities can't be beaten thanks to the XDA members that try their best to make it faster rather than complain about it. That is the main reason why I don't have an iPhone. As for AT&T, yes they have thier downfalls (like all of the other cell phone companies do). If those downfalls are unacceptable for you, then quit complaining and change your service provider!! I have thought about leaving, but it's cheaper to stay since almost everyone I know has AT&T and the mobile-to-mobile minutes would be worthless to me elsewhere.
But that is just my humble opinion, I don't expect it to change the world or a major corporation.

When I get on a thing, sometimes my thoughts go down different paths,
so the reason for different posts.
Not a linear thinker.
At my age, mental multitasking is not as easy as it was 25yre. ago.
Still works though.
I think that Tilt2 has some, as yet undiscovered hardware issues.
Don't want to go too far with this at the moment, because, I am not entirely sure what is going on.
Didn't have to stress test replacement very long.
ATT sent a refurb, which on the face of it operated faster than the first one.
Opera 9.5 opened and browsed faster than the original.
Most other function, software operated fairly to very well.
Actually on original Tilt2, a lot of these things worked as well as I was expecting from Windows Mobile.
Replacement, though seemed much more responsive for most general things.
PocketOutlook, fast. ATT.Yahoo.Com email with Opera 9.5, fast.
Internet Explorer 6 faster, still a little slow.
I am not looking for any particular fixes from you folk as yet, just observing and reporting is all.
Long story short, if that is possible.
The piece received as a replacement, after observation was a recycle/refurbish.
Discovered after trying to fit screen protector which didn't fit.
Already had screen protector installed.
On the hardware, slide/tilt mechanism seemed loose/wobbly.
Called ATT support this morning to get some idea what I was sent.
While waiting, put phone on speakerphone/external audio.
Audio speaker phone buzzed briefly, then was silent.
Tried to move back to earphone, no audio.
Similar to most recent hard failure of original piece.
Now I have two Tilt2' with similar hardware failure on audio path.
On the failure path (original phone), for several days before complete failure the original upon receiving email requiring notification. Notification, by default, would be, short vibrate/sound.
Shortly before failure, notification became constant vibrate.
Only stopped by shut-down/restart.
This morning replacement began to fail in the same way, coincident with the other audio/hardware trouble.
I appreciate that you folks are fix it folk.
I am not necessarily wanting to be short with anyone, as far as offering fixes.
Maybe I had not explained myself well enough earlier.
Not necessarily wanting a fix from you for my self.
Just exposing an issue.
I ask the same questions also when trying to trouble shoot equipment problems.
"Is it plugged in Mam/Sir?", sometimes will sound condescending to a customer who call for help.
For the dog lovers, I love and feel close to my pets also.

The only issue i've faced with my tilt 2 is the volume up/down buttons became dislodged then i dropped it one time and they got back in place but now my volume up button doesn't push back, but still works so doesn't bother me that much.
I guess your just having really bad luck. If you bought a new device and received a refurb with the same or worse issues, call back and explain to them that you need a new device because you paid for a new device thats supposed to work, not a refurb replacement.

well, an idea of getting a Nexus One has bitten me, and it won't let go.
The explanation is the sluggishness of WinMo and the half-Gz processor in my Tilt2. The problem is that I know ATTs Nexus One has it's problems as well, like the color offset, etc..
The main selling point for me (and maybe Nexus' owners can persuade me otherwise) is the interface responsiveness.. Delays of 500ms+ are unacceptable for me.. I'm ashamed to admit it, but iPhone still has the best responsiveness for me. It's just so damn fast to respond to every to.
How is Nexus One in that department? Hopefully some owners can chime in...
P.S: don't tell me to try other ROMs, I tried them all. A week of syncing with exchange and gmail make any rom too slow for me. If it takes 1second+ to load an email - thats way too slow for me.
Only other thing I've heard of with the nexus one is the screen issues. Basically google has now stated that the nexus one is not a pocket phone due to issues with the screen when placed in your pocket (or constant pressure i'd assume).
You should give this a try to help you decide.
Response times are pretty impressive. Plus, you have to consider that it's running on an emulator on a device with half the specs of the Nexus One.
If you like Android and you want a reason not to get the Nexus One, that reason would be the HTC Desire. More RAM, Sense, optical pad, hardware buttons.
my friend got one days after I got my TP2. It all comes down to OS preference in the end..he does admit that he hates typing on the screen, but insisted he would never need a 'physical keyboard' lol..
I really don't see anything that phone does better (except for speed) than the TP2. I'm always 1-upping him w/ apps and what not..oh and you ever use or plan to use MSFT exchange, its an absolute nightmare on android. have to pay $20 for an app called touchdown. Want office? that'll be another $20 for a program by dataviz. add that to the cost of the Nexus One..
My advice to anyone will be tough it out with what you have now, save for a WP7S phone, b/c that is going to be revolutionary!!
I honestly can't blame you, I've personally considered "jumping ships" to Android, or just waiting for WM7 device to come out and buying that. The Rhodium's a beautiful device, but the Crapcomm MSM7xxx that powers it is piss poor, and not worth the money I paid for this device. It's rather disappointing to wait for things to load on my ~5 month old device, while my ~2 year old iPod touch and iPhone seem to load things just fine. If I had the money, I would play around with the idea of getting a nicer device, but I'm stuck until I get enough cash. If I were you and I had the money, I would at least consider the options of a faster/newer/better device.
@ohyeahar: Android isn't running in an emulator, HaRET restarts the device into Android after unloading Windows Mobile from RAM. While some performance enhancements may still be made, since it's not running emulated, the speed isn't as impressive as it seems.

Cool, thanks for correcting me. I'm quite clueless as to how you genius developers make Android run on a WinMo device...
i just get a hands on of nexus one from my friend. and its so so much faster than tp2. go get it now! i'm gonna receive my att version tomorrow and will use it as my primary phone and use tp2 for e-mails.

Thanks for the good breakdown there.. problem is I see no good option for me in the future, besides, maybe, HTC Desire. WM7's interface, in my opinion, is f***king horrible. It barely covers 80% of the screen, hideous blue squares, pieces of titles... and I don't care for social networks or XBOX, as I use neither.
So WM7, so far, has put me in depression.

Sounds good, but emails for me are even more important than the phone itself. I live by emails and syncing with work's exchange server.
One of the main reasons I'm considering switching to android is how awesome gmail looks like.
In WM6.5 emails are horrific - any more or less formatter email, like a newsletter, will load 6-10 seconds, then lag like a dead donkey and will only display a small portion of the email. I still wonder how MS's email viewer even passed QC.

Yeah I do have xdandroid on my tilt2. It's sluggish and not fast enough for 100% use, although I agree that it's amazing how they managed to make it work so well on a device it was never even intended for.
Just one word why not jumping over Nexus:
Keyboard!!!!!!!!!!!
The keyboard would be a big reason for me not too as well, that coupled with the fact that there are problems with screen not being true multi-touch, as you can see at the following locations

From the info you've given so far, lack of keyboard issue aside, why not the HD2?
Well I asked myself about switching to Android as well. Biggest reason for me for not switching to android is synchronization. I refuse to use Google stuff and have my contacts and emails scanned by them. But not using Google brings up serious issues with synchronizing contacts and calendar from a Mac to your Android phone (i am not sure if Windows -> Android is any better). Other thoughts are that I already bought a lot of software for my WinMo phone and I'd have to buy it again for Android.
Another thing is KEYBOARD. There is no Android device with a nice keyboard out. I tried the Android port for the TP2, which is great, but the issues with synching remain.... So all in all, it's not going to be Android, as synching is killer for me.
I have tried the latest XDAndroid on my TP2 and it was easy configuring it to synch with my Exchange server. I just used the built-in Mail client.

Thank you - I needed that laugh!
The Nexus One looks sweet and I'm sure it runs smooth and the OS is stable. I just don't like how you would have to pay for certain apps and the fact that it costs around 500+ dollars.
I was getting tired of my TP2 because I was constantly searching for a fast but stable ROM. I finally found it! It's the latest Energy ROM (21xxx) with sense 2.1. It's fast, leaves me with a lot of available ram and very stable! I've yet to encounter a bug/issue. I've also installed a few cabs to make it look nice and fresh. Why not try out the ROM and customize it to make it look the way you want it to look?
Almost forgot, gotta love the keyboard and tilt screen feature. Always amazes everyone I show.
tp2 to n1 to tp2 and going back to n1
i originally started out with the tp2, then got the nexus one to review. i didnt like the n1 for one reason no desktop syncing. wm did that so i switched back to the tp2. but i got a taste of a really good os in that short review. it was weird to use a phone that for the most part (not 100% but in comparison to wm may as well be) worked with little to no tweaking. for one month i had no issues with the damn thing. i thought i would miss the keyboard of the tp2 but i could actually type faster with the onscreen kb of the n1. the apps were nice and clean and the one time i did have a force close was due to the program being a beta build. anyway i came back to the tp2 because of the many programs i sync with on my desktop but in the back of my mind i was missing the smoothness, speed, and problem free os of the n1. i went through just about every damn rom on this forum trying toreplicate the feeling i had with the n1, and would always fall short. in the end, as of last thursday, i have placed my order for a new n1. after reading how wm7 has addoped this lock it down phylosphy i have finally lost all interest in wm and wp7. desktop syncing is no longer enough of an anchor for me after having experiencing a newer and refined os. I of course will keep an eye on wp7 when its released, but i just need a smooth, fast, and problem free phone without the need to do the developers job of tweaking it to work the way it should.
your basically looking for a desktop to fit in your pocket...my nexus one is nothing to brag about ,i can do the same things on my tp2...i just happen to fall in the trap with the hype...now i need my money back ...i just wasted my money on two phones
Preordered iPhone5. Received it Friday Sept 21. Returned Sunday 2-3 days later. Picked up t-mobile Galaxy S3 right after returning the iPhone5.
So glad I am back on Android. From the 2-3 days of ownership of the iPhone5/iOS (as this was my 1st iPhone and I just wanted to experiment to see how I'd like it), I was not able to do very basic things I wanted, or any reasonable person would expect to be able to do to a phone.
1st off, Ringtones. Anyone owning a phone would have a reasonable expectation to be able to change / add custom ringtones. Should I have to pay for it? Maybe, that is if I don't want to cut the songs myself. I already have ringtones from my last phone which was basic mp3s I could have drag/dropped over. But with iPhone, I had to go through tedious process of utilizing iTunes as a medium, converting to AAC format, moving onto desktop, deleting the ones in iTunes, then renaming the .m4a format to .m4r, then dragging it back into iTunes, then syncing. I could have done all this on Android by just plugging it to my comp, locate Ringtones folder, dropped it in, and done.
Sync was an issue too. I'm pretty sure most people use gmail in some way, and all my contacts are in gmail. Tried to get contacts to sync over to iCloud was a hassle. It would only sync the root folder group of contacts and not the other groups. I had to manually export each contact group to my comp, then import into iCloud. Now if I added/made changes to a contact on my iPhone, I'd have to go back home, and re-enter a new contact in google. It's just not a seamless process.
Also the AppStore. Every 15 minutes I want to get an app, I am asked to enter a password. And Apple requires a complicated pw with uppercase/lowercase, numbers, special characters. It's not by any means easy to type on the phone every time I want to install something.
No widgets either on iOs. No notification widgets to easy turn on/off options like WiFi, screen rotation, GPS, Bluetooth. I have to go into settings and navigate through menus to turn them on/off.
I didn't like how all the apps just show up on the home screen as iOS doesn't have a drawer like Android, and I'd have to dump everything into folders if I didn't want to see it. Also all the icons just align from right to left, top to bottom. I can't change where they are on the page except for the order it flows. I read maybe JailBreaking can help with this customization, but I don't think I want to wait that long for an untethered JB to be available for the iPhone5 to be released.
Forgot to add, I have a TF700 and I utilize TabletTalk to sync SMS to my Tablet and send SMS via the Tablet. This wouldn't have worked out for an Android Tablet with an iPhone.
Side issue that affected me, but unrelated to Apple, was the fact Sprint had deceptive advertising regarding their LTE coverage. As you guys know, iPhone is either 3G or LTE; no WiMax. In DFW, even though coverage map shows I am clearly in 4G LTE coverage, Sprint indeed only had 1 LTE tower up and running in the other side of Dallas of where I am at. And Dallas is a pretty damn big city, so all I ever saw was 3G. Sprint's 3G was < 1mbps down/upload, which is unacceptable as I am paying for "unlimited 3g/4g data" cost of an additional $10/month. It is hardly enough bandwidth to stream music / video or let alone download apps unless I am connected to WiFi; which then goes back to the point of why am I even paying for data. Unlimited data is pointless at that speed and I'm not going to wait 1-2 yrs for Sprint to finish rolling out LTE in Dallas; since by then my contract would have expired anyways and I could just switch to Sprint then.
But overall, I didn't try to / demand anything complicated out of the phone. The simple things I wanted it to do, didn't go as I had expected, even though I kept hearing how easy iPhones are to use, and how stable it is. Stable OS, smooth processing, and pretty, yes. But basic simple customization / syncing, no. And now I totally understand when Android users are trolling iPhone users.
That's why the iPhone has those mesmerizing screen transition animations. Supposed to help relieve the headache after all the frustration. J/K.

If you have a mac is easier to import your Google contacts to iCloud, or you can set up Gmail as a exchanged account and will import and update all your contacts automatically (kind of like android) anyways, I'm about to return my iPhone 5 is amazing looking device but not for my needs like I said before, the only thing I miss the most(besides a few apps) is battery life in stand by, really good phone not my cup of tea tho

Nice to see your in the Galaxy... the cryphones will never be better then android. They have no comparison.. you take a phone that does things and can't be changed and "compare" it to a phone that let's u do whatever you want on it.. I just never see it as a fair comparison.. that's like saying the cryphones are a Datsun and the androids are lambos... and then people say the cryphones are better.. there are in different leagues altogether. Cryphones = lockdown no customization like android... but glad to see u here. Many people waste so much time n money on apple.. and now its biting them in the wallet and a$$... he he he I love it. BTW if u have a DSLR cannon camera check out chainfire's DSLR controller app.. I just found it yesterday and I can control my camera with my phone... its so dope!!! Sgs3 BEST PHONE I'VE HAD YET. PERIOD.

Lots of valid points, but overall it's just an issue with competing ecosystems. You had already had some Androids, so most of your ecosystem was setup through gmail and google.
For a Mac user coming over to an Android phone, much of the same problems pop up (no easy itunes music/podcasts integration, etc)
But overall just by its open source nature, Android is much easier to work with and setup. And conversely since Apple likes to control all aspects of user experience, you don't get all the features and selling points (i.e. the iPhone is so "easy" to use!) unless you are subscribed to the entire Apple ecosystem.

Only way I'd go apple products is if I edited lots n lots of videos... Apple wins that battle all day. But that's there PC and not mobile...

Tmo has really fast data at DFW, wasn't able to leave the airport hah but in it the 4g was great. For ringtones you can just longpress a song in the media player. No need to even move it.
My gmail calendar syncs between my iPad/net/phone perfectly. Haven't tried contacts but I'm sure there is a way. iOS is definitely a different experience though. I really like the app tray on android too. But iOS has the advantage of searching when you hit home twice.

Video and/or Photos (i work with both) so I do run Macs at home. For mobile I'm with you though, loving my GSIII
Since I do not do any media creation I have no reason to keep an apple product. I use my S3 and my Nexus 7 for almost all of my day to day use.
Otherwise I use my little netbook but those times are getting further and further in between.
I was interested in the iPhone 5, but now that you reviewed here and I'd an android user before, I will just wait for the note 2. I do like Apple products, just hate the Apple company...

I just though I share my story here:
My HTC desire died because of to much freedom after 1.5 year of custom ROM flashing and partition profile switching(hboot).(I think I have switched between all available ROMs for the HTC Desire before it died one months ago)
I always flashed a new ROM because non of them was what I wanted.
Sure Oxygen was awesome but it sopped to receive updates.
MIUI was awesome but it stopped to to receive updates. (For Desire)
I spent most my time on Gingerbread and ICC custom ROMS and always had stability issues.
I know that if I get an iPhone I will still get updates for it 2 years from now.
If I get a galaxy S3 I will get jellybean but after that there is nothing promising that I will get Key lime pie.
When I get an iPhone all apps in the app store will work on it without problem.
That is maybe the case for galaxy S3. But it's not guaranteed.
I'm also tired of all the customization options. It's great to be able to customize so much but I never was able to get it exactly how I wanted it to be anyway.
The iPhone isn't nearly have as much customize options. But still, it's enough for me and I used MIUI ROM so it reminds a lot of the iOS.
I never even used widgets after a while because widget made my already crappy battery run out of ´cream´ even faster.
I'm still thinking of maybe take a S3 though because of the iPhone seems to have a bit of problems(easy scratches and some other minor stuff)
Though the S3 in my eyes is REALLY big. I can still cancel my order on the iPhone so if anyone after reading this can convince me to get the S3. Please go ahead.
I really loved my time with android. But I kind of got sick on it. Maybe if I try both the iPhone 5 and GSIII I can finally make a 100% accurate choice.

I won't try to dissuade you. If T-Mobile hadn't given me a good deal to stay, or I weren't on T-Mobile to start with, I might have decided to give the iPhone 5 a try. That said, my understanding from a relative who happily uses Apple products is that, if as I do you use Google calendar and Gmail, then there's no significant advantage to the iPhone over the Galaxy S III. What you're left with is a choice between two very good products, each of which has advantages and disadvantages.
So you preordered a phone? What provider? Then used it and didnt like it. Then you got a S3 today and you have already rooted it? Judging by your sig?
@OP I moved to the dfw area a few months ago and had Sprint. nearly two months went by, I had absolutely no service and they said it's because they're "upgrading". I don't call that much of an upgrade if I can't even make calls. And the wimax was still awful. So you made the right choice switching. I also switched to tmo, got an amazing deal and am loving the 4g, WiFi calling, and service in general. Plus the s3 makes it that much sweeter.
If you haven't yet, make sure to call and ask them to add the free WiFi calling onto your account.

I'm going to visit a local store and try out the S3 and check if it's possible to get my interest back to android.
Than only time will tell if I decide to cancel the order or not and get the S3 instead.
Also the 4G version of the Galaxy S3 is not released here in Sweden yet I think.

I had T-Mobile to begin with (grandfathered with unlimited data). My plan doesn't end until December, but I figured I got tired of flashing unstable roms on my Nexus S that I'd give iPhone a try, as people kept saying "oh it's so easy to use and it's so stable". I used the iPhone 5 from Friday afternoon till Saturday night. I ran into too many customization / sync issues where I just had enough of it and I wiped the phone clean and ready to be returned. Sunday came and I called up Sprint, and cancelled my plan and set up my phone to be returned. Afterwards, went over to T-Mobile as I have the itch for a new phone. Spoke w/ the rep at the store and turns out I could upgrade my account for some reason (though I kept thinking I had to wait the full 2 years to upgrade my line). So picked up the GS3 right then and had everything up and running. I was already using ParanoidAndroid 2.13 on my Nexus S, so it wasn't difficult to get everything up and running. This is much improved over my last phone. 2GB ram vs 512MB (380MB usable) and 1.5GHz+ (oc'd to 1.7 via LeanKernel) vs 1.2GHz Marmite Kernel. GS3 was an overall much better experience.
As for the iPhone, it's a great phone (smooth, fast, and pretty). Great build quality and finish and amazing display. It did feel more delicate as the surface seemed a bit more prone to scratches (back and sides). Mine however was fine, but I don't speak for everyone. The anodized aluminum is more likely to get scratched, and I got the white one so it is less noticeable. The GS3, even though plastic, actually seemed more durable to everyday use, as one would probably not want to constantly worry about scratching the beautiful iPhone shell. Also accessories are scarce for the iPhone. My case was pre-ordered, and still not shipped out today. Cancelled that as I no longer plan on sticking with the iPhone. Also trying to get additional USB->Lightning cables was going to cause me to have to wait another 2-3 weeks due to backorder.

As for Sprint, they had deceptive LTE advertising. I canceled well within the 14 day trial period ( < 72 hours to be exact). Sprint's 3G is the equivalent of dialup. T-mobile's 4G, even though not real 4G, is still comparable to cable/dsl speeds. Fios-like speeds of LTE is great, but not necessary. Just thinking about the data cap from AT&T or Verizon, as I'm not grandfathered on those plans, would mean constant worry about if I'm hitting cap or not. But anyways, I didn't sign up for Sprint to use my iPhone on WiFi or wait the 1-2 years till they finally finish rolling out LTE in DFW.
BTW, did you end up paying any termination fees? You stated 2 months went by. I just figured, I'd GTFO ASAP haha. Sprint's 3G was unacceptable in today's terms.

Yup Apple sucks
