[Q] Smart to get droid incredible now? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, Im due for an upgrade on april 3 and dont know what to get. It will be my first smartphone and I'm strongly leaning towards a brand new droid incredible my budget is 50 to 100 and i dont mind refurbs. I really want the thunderbolt but its out of my range unless the price significantly drops in a week. Sooo do you think it would be ok to have a droid inc. Comments,Concerns, personal opinions.
Much appreciated,Aaron

I can't say its a bad thing. I love my Inc! And I'll be stuck with mine for close to two years still. Join the party

Well the phone is already pretty long in the tooth. So when u buy it keep in mind that u may go through some extreme phone envy in the coming months. It's a good phone but certainly outmatched nowadays. My advice? Save up and wait for a better phone

I used my upgrade on an iPhone 4. Took it back, ignored the tbolt and got the incredible. IMO its like the nexus 1, it'll never die. Its a great phone and will continue to be. I like it better than my fascinate, Droid x, and iPhone.

I just got mine almost a month ago, as long as the community stays strong, I'll stay happy.

I agree! Unlike the Incredible's stock battery ...the phone has a long life. Lol.
The fact that people still consider it even when it's EOL is coming up says something about the phome

Pocketing HTC Incredible

Really great phone, coming from a non-smart phone you may not be use to the lesser battery life so I suggest you think about getting an extended battery. This is actually my first smart phone too, it prompted the rest of my family to get droids (lol)
From the reviews I've heard about the TB is that it's not all that's cracked up to be. It's main feature of course is 4G- but many places don't have that coverage yet.
It's also rumored to have significantly less battery than the incredible. It's CPU is very comparable to the incredible's, although the graphics are reported to be a decent upgrade.
If you go with this phone I don't think you will be disappointed. If you root it and run a custom ROM on it, I think you'll love it
Personally I see no need for an upgrade anytime soon. The TB is not a good enough upgrade IMO, and in terms of battery life I see it as a downgrade.

Stock... maybe. But this is a forum full of developers, hackers, and rooters ... and with a rooted Thunderbolt and a nice kernel ... stock battery won't be a big issue...
Development is gonna blow up for this phone... I think it is an upgrade..

So to answer your question simply: Yes, it is an upgrade.

One of the reasons Im buying the droid Inc is to root it and flash a custom rom? So does the unrevoked root work on 2.2.1 OTA update?

Yes, it can root the 2.2.1 update. I personally love my Incredible and I've had it since the day it came out. I'm waiting for a nice 4" LTE phone with a dual core processor and screen resolution upgrade, and of course, a front facing camera and a strong development team . If you buy it now, you won't regret it, especially for the $50-$100 price tag it has now.

This is a great phone super reliable and it has a great community support go for it. You will not regrets.

I would buy the phone again in a heartbeat. My friends phones they just bought still can't compete with the inc. Yes it is a smart choice
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App

If it were me I would wait a bit and get a Thunderbolt when the price drops and maybe you can come up with more money. The Incredible is great but the Thunderbolt is better imo.

You need to ask yourself if you will be happy with the phone for the next two years. I had a droid X but took my wifes upgrade to get the INC, this phone rocks!
With dual core phones already coming down the pipe I can't see the TBolt staying a high-end phone for long.
If you don't think that you will have phone envy, get the INC...you will love it. But if you are a complete phone whore like I am, I would suggest waiting for a few more months. Even if you still only have $100 there will be newer phones by then and there is always a deal going on with phones now.
best of luck to ya,

Personally I'd wait, I convined my dad to wait it out for the Inc2, I bought my brothers upgrade off him for $50 cos I wanted the TB but it's too large, i will wait for the inc2, and when my upgrade beomces avail april 2012 we'll see whats good then.

If you get an inc, go to walmart, there 28.88

Is this the phone to get?

I currently have a Samsung Fascinate and planning to selling it because of lack of some features in Froyo and probably future updates in general.
Is this the phone to get as in terms of software development progress? (In verizon of course). Or is Droid 2 or X good as well? (not liking the X because it's too big).
I don't play games whatsoever on this phone. TBh, most important feature is just getting things done very quickly; Music, E-Mail, Browsing, GPS, SMS/MMS.
Thank you.
Nah, this isn't the phone to get. Verizon has a Powerhouse lineup coming out very soon including the thunderbolt and an LG smartphone ( and the iPhone, being announced tomorrow ).
Sent from my HTC Incredible using XDA App
Of course I'm a little bias but yes, I think as of now this is the phone to have. The development community rocks, and it is a very quick phone. Now there are some awesome phones on the horizon; the HTC Thunderbolt, and the Moto Droid Bionic. But considering you can get a DInc at Best Buy for free (with a new contract or available upgrade of course) it is a sweet deal. As far as what's currently out I haven't checked the Droid 2 forums but I did check out the X just to see how it was coming, and it's nothing compared to what we have over here. Just my 2 cents, take it for what it's worth.

You said "(In verizon of course)." Are you thinking of running the stock ROM? Or plan to root and run some of the great ROMs the devs here put out?
Since you said 'Verizon', makes me think you're planning to run stock. If so, beware that even the Thunderbolt is shipping with Froyo. My guess is we won't see Gingerbread (officially) until spring or summer.

thank you everyone for your reply!
I meant Verizon as in, I am restricted to phones that Verizon carries. I don't really stay stock, if I do, I'd at least have a ULV Kernel.
If I sell this now, I'll need to use a dumb phone until whatever phone I need comes out. I wonder if I can order the iPhone tomorrow on the website... kind of tempting.
Anyway, thanks everyone!

When are these coming out? I don't want to be without one of these things for more than a month or so...
The choice is basically Incredible, D2G, or D2X ($50, $150, $120 respectively from Amazon to upgrade on my brothers upgrade eligible line) if the iPhone reallyy comes out tomorrow, I'd have to think about this all over again -.-

Personally it was the only choice for me. I think many of the new phones are getting toooooo big. Tho phone is the perfect size for me. If is also very very fast. I still have to get use to the screen keyboard. All my old phones had a keyboard. But that is not too bad.
So, my vote is yes. The size and speed makes it he best phone I have played with.

Out of the phones you mentioned I would get an inc. Locked bootloaders + laggy stuttering stock launchers on motoblur devices make mad. Sense (especially the new sense) just feels really solid and polished

There is a thread I made that shows all the ROMs (that are up to date with development) to show how awesome our dev community is. The incredible is an awesome phone. I am moving to the iPhone because I've wanted one since I switched to VZW, but if you want to stay with android and you are in the sub-4" market... go with the incredible. It is the heat.
The thread I mentioned is at the top of the droid incredible development page, as a sticky.
Ok so iPhone announced preorders begin Feb 3rd releases Feb 10th, if you want to stay Android get the Thunderbolt, Motorola does a horrible job with android phones and the Droid and Droid X community's are dead, if you get an Incredible your getting us, the great community but you could be getting the 4g LTE with the thunderbolt. In conclusion YOUR BETTER OFF GETTING THE THUNDERBOLT!

What is the deal with upgrades at January 16th?
I have the discount pricing for additional family line (my little brother) available for use, that's why I was considering the 3 phones because they're not that pricey at Amazon.com or Newegg.com with contract.
Bloody hell, I would be stuck with a dumbphone until those new phones come out.. and I heard Verizon might do a more expensive plan for 4G phones?
lol iphone,, um negative.. hell im gonna leave verizon.. tired of paying out the arse.. lol gonna go to virgin mobile.. ( samsung intercept ) <----ya i know but for 27 bucks a month its worth it.. not to mention still have my DINC to play with over wifi...
I realized I didnt use alot of junk outside of facebook. last.f.m. and a few other apps. so the intercept will work just fine.. and still have 3g service..

I'm sure 4G would cost more.. it is 8x faster... but only 1/3 of their 3G is covered with 4G.. do us without have to pay.. if so, **** that. ill get a fascinate to be my play around phone then lol. 4g isn't that important to me, either is 2.3, nor 3.0.. i had 1.5 on my eris that was rock solid. ever since that freak hype for 2.1 it has ruined it for me. I will never let myself get that excited for an update again, esp considering how long that wait was for what felt like nothing. I think that is what the Thunderbolt is gunna be like, since 2/3 of the 3g population won't have 4g service it will basically be an incredible with a 4.3 screen, stand, sound, and second gen snapdragon or whatever.

Same here.
i went from the fascinate to the Dinc for the same reasons you did, and couldn't be happier. There just wasn't a solid DEV community for that phone.. coming to the DINC was night and day.. so many choices, so much support.. I run the MIUI ROM and love it..
I left the D2 for the Incredible and have zero regrets. If you want to have custom ROMs and kernels, you have to stick with HTC. X/2 ROMs are really hamstrung by the locked bootloader.
The development scene on the Incredible is great and probably as good as it will get on Verizon for the foreseeable future. The Thunderbolt will get custom ROMs and kernels just the same, but public sentiment seems to indicate it won't be as popular - meaning a slightly smaller development community (though perhaps Incredible and EVO ports will be relatively simple).
All that said, I'm probably going to jump on the Thunderbolt the day its released
I love the inc, but i would also wait.
I would actually wait until I see a phone that has the dev support/community like the Inc.
For me, where the dev support goes is where I go.

What phone are we moving to after Incredible?

Yes we are a collective
So what phone should we move to after the Incredible?
I really don't like the Thunderbolt very much and the Motorola phones are obviously out of the question due to locking.
Should we just get the Thunderbolt next and accept its flaws or wait for another HTC dual core to come out? Samsung Galaxy is rumored to come over but we all know Samsung isn't very well supported. I guess I want to take advantage of locking into unlimited 4g.

Ill let you know in november when I'm eligible lol. Realistically by the time a lot of the ppl can get new phones, these phones are going to be so much more advanced. Even in a year. Google is making a big push towards NFC but not many phones have theme yet. Dual core chipsets are becoming common w/ quad core mobile chips expected by next year. Its really to hard to even say what I would want now.

My contract isn't up till next April :/
Though when it is time I would try to another HTC Sense phone that will be top of the line. Besides I don't like any the new phones because I don't feel they are worth the upgrade other than the Sensation.
My contract isn't up until December of next year, so I won;t be moving on from my Dinc for a while. There really isn't anything worth moving on to right now anyway, so for now I'm going to wait and hope that Verizon gets a pure Google phone before my contract is up.
Holy crap I haven't been in the DInc forums in a LONG time!
But really, it's your own choice. The developers choice? Thunderbolt.
I moved to the TB, Slayher has moved to the TB and many other DInc developers have moved to the TB. Overall, it's a rock solid phone that can have its flaws and issues sorted out by us. It's honestly nothing to avoid. Lemme know if you have any questions about the TB and I'll be glad to help
On the day I'm eligible to renew I'll gonna wait for the newest release, so whatever that is
i am really considering switching carriers and getting either the htc sensation or htc evo 3d but who knows lets see what verizon has in store for us because they really need to step up to the plate or they are going to be left behind.

Hopefully when I can upgrade Verizon should have 4g/lte in my market
Not eligible for upgrade until next summer but my next phone is definitely whatever is on Verizon with the best dev support. Kinda jealous of those with the TB but there's no 4g in my area and probably wont be even next summer but I'm assuming most offerings will be 4g by then.

No upgrade for a long time for me, too. But I am very happy with htc's sense, and hardware. So, I expect my next phone to be whatever htc android with the smallest screen is available at the time I upgrade.
I'm not eligible for another 1.5 years I believe. Even if I was now, there's nothing eye catching or worth upgrading to IMO.
MAYBE the Charge, but even that is a stretch. The TB or the Inc 2 aren't very appealing to me. I need my phone to last a little bit longer than the TB and the Inc 2 is a modest spec bump over the Inc at best.

I agree with this. Not sure what issues people have with the phone, but my brother got one and I am slightly jealous. No front-facing camera? I can live with that. I'd never get anything other than HTC for a phone, after the Incredible. (Yes, I currently have a Dell Streak7 - couldn't keep waiting for an HTC tablet).

I seen a phone just like what you described yesterday at "Dreamers R Us".
I have 6 phones on my account so usually one of them is up for renewal about every 3-4 months. Right now 3 of them are up for renewal and I'm just waiting for something to become available with the "wow factor" that the Incredible had when it launched. I still have my original Incredible from 2 weeks before launch last year and I'm really going to have a hard time getting rid of it. Either that or I'll get one of the unlocked developer phones and can root/flash custom rom's without worry from the carrier.
Why move from it if you are happy with it?
I just got my new incredible yesterday. Picked up a brand new AMOLED model off ebay, got a month to month verizon account, just rooted the thing last night, and I plan to rock this baby for a long time.
Good to hear some guys really like the Thunderbolt. The only thing that urks me is that we don't have yearly/annual upgrades anymore so we will have this phone for almost 2 years.. As long as not having dual core for a couple years isn't a big deal.. Thats really the only thing making the decision a little harder.
Before it wasn't a big deal to get a new phone because I could upgrade every year.

Mostly to lock into unlimited LTE for at least 2 years. I wasn't that interested in upgrading until I found out they weren't tiering LTE plans for at least a couple months.
Guys, have we forgotten about the Droid Bionic!?
Moto promised unlocked bootloaders in all their future phones, post-Droid X, Dual core tegra 2, 4-inch screen goodness! It's basically a phone with XDA written all over it!
Plus my contract doesn't end till next year, since we knocked down a line on our family plan, but I really don't mind the 2 years+ that I'll have with my CM'ed Incredible!

Im thinking of getting droid incredible

Coming from droid 1 i think it maybe upgrade but not by that much should i buy droid incredible? I want a phone with all it capablity and sense ui but i miss stock android ui.

Well you can always root the phone, and then install CM7 for the stock Android feel, or there are a ton of Sense based ROMs out there too. So you can always flash another ROM to try things out.
Well i had HTC Hero and tried rom on droid 1 with sense ui . I like it but i dont know but i like droid incredible, because of the specs.
I just moved from the Droid 1 to the Inc a few days ago. The difference is amazing. This phone is so much more responsive. It just feels snappy. I'm using CM7 and incredikernel fwiw.
Same.. from d1 to incredible and... Well... It's incredible. So much better and pretty much just as hackable

I came from a og Droid and I could never go back. The dinc is so smooth and snappy, even compared to an overclocked Droid. There really isn't a reason to not do it unless you absolutely despise the virtual keyboard

Yeah the droid incredible has alot of rom options and the dev community is very helpful, coming from the OG Droid id definetly say go for it. Even if you didnt root or anything its still a great phone, and it *should* Be getting gingerbread soon, so thats a plus.
the only thing ths phone lacks, is 4G. other than that, i have no complaints. and when my 2 years is up, if there isn't something out there that just completely wow's me, i'll keep using it. i like it THAT much. i'd buy another..they are getting cheaper, and so are the accessories. i bought a white battery cover on amazon for 6 bucks shipped. bought another battery for 6 bucks shipped. i mean, you can't go wrong. rooting it is a cinch, and the development is as progressive as ever...
DINC FTW. I went from an Eris to the Incredible. The screen on the DINC is just beautiful, whether AMOLED or SLCD. With prices dropping on both new and used DINCs (look on CraigsList), I'd definitely pick one up!
I agree, you cant go wrong with the incredible.
The droid incredible is pretty much at the end of its product cycle, I would be looking at something newer like the charge. I wish I could upgrade before verizon implements its new teared data plans. Problem is its $220 to get out of my contract and $200 to get a new plan and phone. Looks like I'm going to have to stay with my incredible as long as possible to stay with my unlimited plan.
you can keep your unlimited data after July 7th as long you already had a smartphone on that line. In fact, if you don't downgrade, as of now anyway, Verizon said you can stay on unlimited data as long as you keep gettin smartphones. If you don't have a smartphone right now, ask around if anyone has a BB or an Android phone you can activate prior to july 7th so that unlimited data is an option

I think droid 1 is good phone I just need 1ghz phone without the overclocking.I'm not in love with 4g as read it drain to much battery on thunderbolt and charger. I dislike samsung I hack my galaxy it got bricked so I won't be going to them again unless it moto or htc.
The droid inc is still the phone to beat in my mind. I can load up 7-8 gbs of music, put it on party shuffle in the car, and I'm set for days. Also the phones indestructible. I work on cars for part of my living, and I drop it with greasy hands, get all kinds of harsh stuff all over the phone and the only wear it shows is from my old case. Lol

Droid I2 or switch for upcoming Moto Droid 3

I am in a pickle..
On one hand, I have always loved HTC phones. I had the verizon VX6800 when it came out and love it for a long time. Then switched to some crap phone when I broke it.
When Motorola released the Droid, i paid for it out right. Loved it! treated that thing like gold. When they released the Droid 2, i was able to get it from Best Buy for free with a upgrade. I grabbed it, was able to sell my mint condition OG Droid too.
The Droid 2, I wasn't so impressed with. Yes it was just like the droid, but blur and the quality just wasn't there like the OG droid. Just a few weeks ago, I got Verizon to replace it for me with the Droid Incredible 2.
Back to HTC, I have to say im impressed. the lack of the Qwerty keyboard does put a cramp in my style that I have been used to for the past 2 years but nothing swype didn't fix.
So now, I see the droid 3 coming out in like a week. I could still return the Droid I2 for it. But I am unsure, with the DI2 getting Gingerbread soon and how well built the phone is. Also my bad run with the droid 2...
Any thoughts on what to do?

Honestly I'm willing to wait on the dual core...how much RAM does the d3 have? I mean the x2 is awesome but is bottlenecked by its RAM. This thing multi tasks awesomely because of its RAM. And the battery life can't be beat. I'm a heavy user and with the slightly larger battery I got 20 hours today with the screen on time of almost 5 hours...and I live in the middle of no where so I have cell service only half the time.

I never thought a MOTO phone would be the more open choice, but if you want to root don't go with the inc2. It is one of the most locked down phones ever released. The only known stable root method costs a costs over a 100 dollars. There are some who claim they have a software root, but in my professional opinion a stable version of it will never be released. If you want to lock yourself into a 2 year contract on what is probably an empty promise, that is your choice, but I wouldn't.
Now if you don't care about root, the inc2 is a great phone.

Really? You have no patience. Inc2 is going to get root from alpharev....you will see....and feel dumb for all the bashing you are doing. Its sad that some people keep talking bad about phones/devs cuz they "think" they are smart. Have you exploited root? No. Have you made a rom? No. Did your mom dress you this morning? Yes. Go away and be happy with the phone you have. Keep your comments to yourself and leave.

If you don't care about reality, this is a great post.
As it stands, a quick browse of this users posting history should reveal just how worthless his posts are. (Edit: It seems the majority of his posts have been removed by moderators. Understandable, it's just too bad most of the evidence of his stupidity has been deleted.)
As for the phones, my preference would be the Dinc2 because I don't need a QWERTY, but if that's your thing then the Droid 3 might be for you. If I were you I'd spend some time in the store playing with the D3 to determine if you prefer the "feel".
I would guess you'd be disappointed if you switched. I've rooted tons of phones, the Inc2 is by far the best android device i've touched to date. My phone turns circles around a DX2 with it's dual core.
Give swiftkey a try for a keyboard if you're coming from a physical one, it's awesome.
After the issues I have and had with my DROID 2 Global, Motorola would have to do a lot to earn my business again. I mean, it is nice having a stable phone, which the D2G is NOT!

This. Of all the phones in my possession at the moment, the only one I truly dislike is the D2G. Its just awful. Having owned a Droid X and Droid 1, the only way Motorola could win me back is if they just ditched blur entirely and made a quality, open phone like the Droid 1 was. If people keep buying the garbage they produce, nothing will ever change.

I'd urge caution for the D3. Head into the store and check it out first. It uses the same PenTile qHD display which some people (myself included) think is painfully grainy looking. I won't even pull a DX2 off the shelf unless people specifically ask for it because I'm so embarrassed to show them the display if they're coming from a OG Droid or something with a much better looking display. If I hold a DX2 up next to a Samsung Charge, it's glaringly obvious what the difference between Super AMOLED+ and qHD is. qHD does not fare well in that comparison.

I would feel dumb IF a stable software root was released. But I am not worried about that happening.

I've decided to stay with the DI2, I was playing around with the new D3 today and im not that impressed. Its like a Dx2 with a keyboard. I've decided i HATE moto blur and will never go back. Now im just hoping that 2.3 update comes to the DI2 soon!

Any thoughts on what to do?

well, I had the original incredible and even though it was a struggle with my big hands, it was still a great phone. I ended up getting the thunderbolt awhile back and yes, the bigger size was a plus for me, but the phone had some issues(including terrible battery life even with extended battery). I had 30 days to bring it back through best buy and in the last week the droid charge & incredible 2 were supposed to come out. originally I was thinking the charge, but then it got delayed so I just got the incredible 2. at first I was a bit bummed about the no 4G thing but other then that this has been a pretty solid phone.

Should I trade my DINC + $20 for a Fascinate?

I've been given the opportunity to trade my incredible + $20 for a fascinate. Should I do it?
I am kinda really attached to my phone and I can get an upgrade as early as April anyway. I know the fascinate has a pretty darn good build of ICS working on it which is the only reason I'm considering it.
Like I said, I love this phone and am apprehensive to trade it for something else. ICS would be nice, but I'm not sure how many quirks the build has.
Any thoughts? The deal would take place on Friday so I dont have much time to sit and think.

Bigger screen... HELL YEAH
Less ram hell no.
-My life is a shooting range, people never change-
After Samsung's antennagate debacle with the first line of Galaxy S phones, you shouldn't waste your time with the Fascinate. I know it's been "fixed" but that was piss poor handling by Samsung.
No..........
I wouldn't take a fascinate for free. I know to many people with Samsung phones that just have problem after problem. No network connection. My mothers Infuse just turns off randomly. A woman I work next to hers drops 4G to no connection I've pulled her simcard/battery at least 3 times recently. My brother has a NS4g he was telling my yesterday he had no network connection or was dropped to 1x. Battery pull once again. A kid a used to work with had a galaxy S 1 random reboots and just stop charging. Another girl I work with also has a galaxy S 1 ive never seen a phone go into safe mode before. Battery pull. The main reason I passed on the GNexus is because it was made by Samsung.
Long story short NO

I now remember reading about the fascinate having less ram, but forget the exact reason why.
Thanks everyone for your feedback. I will be keeping my Incredible and will continue working on my Sense 1.0 theme that I cannot wait to share

In case you still on the fence, no. Don't do it. The ICS ROMs for Inc are making good progress.

Another no from me.
Of course you are asking a bunch of dINC owners
still I think the dINC is more future proof (even considering how old it is) than the Fascinate.
Yeah I've decided I'm not going to do it. The GPU is worlds better on the fascinate, but with an upgrade right around the corner and me being completely satisfied with this phone (heck I may wait even longer) I'm just gonna stick around. If the fascinate had 4G then it might have been a done deal.
Again thanks all for the feedback!

You're welcome!
I went from the Dinc to the Fascinate. Keep the Dinc. The only thing that the Fascinate has on the Dinc is the bigger screen and a better DAC.
I personally bought the DINC because it was the smallest smartphone available. Sadly, it still is one of a kind in that department. I would try out the ICS build. I am using it now. It's quite stable and will make you feel like you have a new phone even though you have a two year old one.

I have tried out the ICS build and I'm not very satisfied with it. I am hugely picky about the smoothness and responsiveness of my phone rom and ICS on the inc isn't quite there yet due to the graphics drivers not supporting the GPU acceleration properly. I'll give it another shot if that ever gets fixed. That was the main draw of the fascinate to me, same gpu as the gnexus, same smoothness of the gnexus.

Just my opinion, I would never trade a phone you are happy with for anyone's phone unless it was a large upgrade and you were sure you could return it. Many phones have minor annoyances which would make you regret it even if the phone was a minor upgrade. I run miui v4 and despite the things not yet worked out, it is still excellent.

Without a doubt go for it...Just saw your first post maybe you decided already...I've had my fascinate for a year now and the last three months of ics builds have been great. I've used both the teamhacksung and the gummy builds (which I'm running now).
Both builds have been for the most part stable from what I've experienced.
My buddy has two DINC's at the moment with one running MIUI, I wouldn't trade my shattered LCD stylin' fascinate for it...I soft bricked my fassy for two weeks before I got the time to read up enough and restore it, then I dropped it flush, face down on concrete that same exact day...
so yeah take the i500 or sure...save your upgrade if you want
I have a special place in my heart for the Fascinate, but the GPS problem was painful to deal with, no matter how many gpsfix.zip's people put out.
