[Q] Unusal high 3g data useage (from Mail application) - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
My daily 3g useage today is currently at 64Mb, which is just crazy. I haven't used the internet, you tube, etc; and on checking watchdog 3g pro it indicated that it is my Mail that has received this amount. But, that's impossible, the mail size -when check on laptop through Outlook- is around 3 Mb.
Has anyone got any idea why the mail seems to think it has received 20 times this? Is it the Mail app, or Watchdog 3g pro?
I am running Modaco r11 rom, with most of superfluious components removed.
I don't think it's syncing issue Facebook or any other app. Could another app to receiving this data and it is assigned to Mail.
Just a bit confused. The same thing happened in December, but I think that was related to Advanced Task Killer Froyo, which I uninstalled and haven't had the problem since. But this does seem to happen every two to three months - wierd phantom data.
Cheers

Bumping this as again have had crazy 3g usage - 122mb in 1 day, but same as before, from mail. No way have I used that much, but Orange confirmed it. Only change us that I am.using insertion Rom.
Any ideas why my mail app seems go crazy every do often & download 'ghost' data (idea: is it stuck partially downloading something? In a kind of mobius data loop?)

If I was you I would sort the problem out. Delete the account then add it again. It seems pretty weird though.
Swyped...

default refresh values at peak times are like every 15 mins.... have you changed this?
I personally don't auto sync enabled.... only refreshes when I open

Cheers for the replies.
Hmm, I might try deleting the accounts and reinputting them. But it has happened before, and I seem to be the only one with this problem. Could it have something to do with my email provider (which is also my ISP)? Anyone got any technical knowledge about this type if thing?
The prob with manually refreshing the email is that I'm self employed and out and about alot, so need the email frequency set quite regular so I am not constantly looking at phone - it's set for every 15 mins; that said, I hadn't even set it download whole emails.
Could it be something from rooting? But that should make not difference. Or is there any malware that could be doing this...as you see, grabbing at straws here...
Oh, and the Rom I am using is Insertcoin not insertion (damn that predictive text)

Phone keeps hanging with 'Messaging' menu appearing

Hi All,
I'm a long time lurker and first poster - just want to say initially thanks for all the helpful hints, tips, software etc I've picked up from the forum.
However, I've recently got a problem that I can't seem to crack and wondered if anyone has any ideas. I've tried searching but to no avail.
Randomly (and often when browsing) 'Messaging' appears on the top bar (with 'Delete' and 'Menu' on the softkey bar (as if it had suddenly shifted to an email page) but the main portion of the screen remains frozen with whatever was going on before (i.e. the webpage, today screen or whatever). It'll happen a few times then Opera crashes, but it also happens with the phone on standby (not sure if Opera was still running).
If I hit 'Menu' then 'Reply' it comes up with the latest message from my Hotmail account. I'm running Windows Live as a push account I think it may be that triggering it when it starts to sync. Perhaps some sort of problem with Opera and Windows Live when they're both running?
I've not got any serious mods installed and didn't have this problem until recently. I've got the latest versions of Opera, Windows Live and have recently reflashed the ROM in case that was the problem but no such luck.
I'm going to disable the push email and see if it still happens then try uninstalling things to see if that stops it but any suggestions gratefully received if you've had a similar problem and have managed to solve it.
Brief spec:
WinMo 6.5 (latest official HTC ROM)
UK O2 network
Opera Mobile 10 Beta 2u (Ninja Duck enhanced, but it happened with the Opera official version too)
1% Battery mod
FInixNOverBatteryIconsOnly battery icon mod
sdkcerts for above
SmartPhone tracker (disabled - going to uninstall to check)
ive got the same issue with my stock att branded tilt2
hope someone knows whats causing this...
I'm now thinking it may be a memory shortage issue - last time it did it I checked on task manager and it said memory usage was 95%
It's only about 59% when I reboot so I can only assume that Opera or something is using an inordinate amount of system memory. No idea if that's it, though
HTC Imagio Too
Same problem with my HTC Imagio. Messaging just pops up randomly and for no reason. I believe, too, that it has something to do with the Hotmail push email, but it has not always done this, which is the real mystery.
I'm having the same thing happen. But when I hit the reply button, it just brings up a blank email with my address in the From line. I haven't noticed any increase in RAM though. To me, it's nothing more than a nuisance.
Same here, tmobile stock rom wm6.5.
But when I touch the center area the message tool bar goes away and I resumewhatever I was doing just fine, so I normally ignore this.
May have something to do with checking email. I don't have push (push for gmail still not good IMHO), but the phone is checking my two gmail accounts every 15 minutes.
I have this problem too, and can't stand it. Have push Hotmail via Windows Live, Sync "as items arrive" from 7am to 11pm.
I've also downloaded the HTC hotfix for SMS freezing (in case this is related somehow).
I searched for it and can't believe this hasn't been solved yet.
Same here.
I have had this problem since day one, about 5 months ago on my Tilt2. Grrr.
Same issue here.
I also have this issue.
I have observed this occur with 65% memory usage.
I can also confirm this occurs with POP3 email. I have 2 POP3 accounts and no push accounts.
It does not seem connection related, happens when connected via EDGE, 3G, & Wifi.
I am running an NRG wm6.5 ROM.
same problem here. was hoping to find a fix on here.
Same here, Verizon TP2 when I hit the messaging image, it just goes away. Using stock WinMo 6.5 rom with about 8 apps from OpenMkt. Device is pretty stable and other than above and very slow opening mail sometimes.
everyone has thais problem and no replies :-( I also have this problem
my phone freezes a lot when opening a new txt. I downloaded the hotfix sms fix from htc and when i go to install it it just says the hotfix is not compatible
I have a problem with mine regarding opening TXT messages in windows messaging app, not in the HTC txt app. When I close it, it just freezes then I have to hit the side button to reset....Anyone have a fix for this? Im running TMOUS windows 6.5
Same problem here. Although mine happens on both emails (pop and windows live) and text. Whenever I close any of them the messaging will pop up 5-30 seconds later.
Hopefully if we get enough people with the same problem someone will eventually find a solution!
EDIT: I'm running stock Verizon ROM with a couple minor mods (nothing that screws with messaging, other than the disable SMS sent popup)
Me 2
I too have the same issue with stock tmo 6.5 rom. I never noticed it with energy roms. I wonder if maybe he knows what could be causing this issue? Just an idea.

[Q] HTC Calendar sync pulling WAY too much data

Since vodafone are starting enforcing their data allowance limits in October, I've been keeping a closer eye on my data usage and was surprised to see that, some days, I'm using 60-70mb. I knew that I was actively using a fraction of that so it had to be something running in the background.
I've got things like facebook and seesmic set to update once an hour and most other things set to manual or once a day updates. Most heavy data use apps like Spotify and Guardian Anywhere are set to only update over Wifi so I couldn't figure out what it might be.
After some searching, I managed to find an app which can break down data usage per app. It turns out that, in the space of a few hours, Calendar used about 20mb just running in the background. I'm guessing this is an HTC sense problem rather than an android issue with just keeping my gmail account in sync, since gmail and contacts aren't pulling down anything like the same amount of data.
Does anyone know how to set refresh intervals for calendar without affecting the other gmail account sync data? The only options I can find is straight on/off with no frequency options.
I'm rooted and using stock rom, since I prefer stability and even the most stable custom roms tend to have a few quirks here and there, but I cant afford so much data to be squandered when it doesn't need to be so might switch, but in the meantime, does anyone have any suggestions? I tried searching the forum but it doesn't seem like there's anyone else having the same problem.

Hi, would you mind posting a link to this app? I have the same problem and have searched for something to break down usage per app but couldn't find anything. Thanks, Stoatie
Wow! Now THAT explains everything and why I was averaging 50-70mb/day as well! I'm also watching my data usage, so thank you so much for this post...
As for an answer, my best advice for now....remove the tick that allows your calendar to sync with your gmail account. The only reason you need to sync your accounts is if you frequently use the web app and as a backup option. So, you can turn off that and your contacts sync and everything will still stay as is and save you precious data. Then you can sync everything once a day or every couple of days if you're into flashing roms or are prone to lose phones, etc.
Hope that helps...I'm about to try out and watch my data usage as well!
+1 for a link to the app thaat breaks data use down by app

+ 2 for the same app please - I know a few guys have been looking for such an app on here for some time now.
Much appreciated.
This is what I use:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/trafficstats/com.trafficstats
appstorehq.com/networkstatistics-android-174793/app this is the one I used. It's been discontinued but is still available in the market. To be honest though, the one posted above looks like the better app, and it's free.
Thanks for the reccomendations

[Q] Android mail eating battery! Please help!

This may have been addressed, but a search didn't reveal anything exactly like this. Please bear in mind that I'm an Android newbie!
I bought the Incredible 2 last Thursday. No rooting, nothing weird, still mostly stock. This morning it's running very slow, screen transitions jerky, etc. and even text based email takes minutes to open. I messed around in settings, and notice that Mail (com.htc.android.mail) is using 48% of my battery, more than twice what the screen is using! I force close, and the phone speeds right up, lag is gone, screen transitions smooth but, minutes later, Mail comes back on line and the phone goes to crap.
I've used more that 1/2 my battery in two hours. I notice that the uptime is 1 hr 58 minutes, and the awake time is 1 hr 44 minutes, so I assume that the mail app is also preventing the phone from sleeping.
Any advise will be greatly appreciated!!
This may sound obvious, but did you try resetting your phone? Turn fastboot off (settings > applications > click fastboot so it is unchecked) then kill mail, and before it has a chance to restart hold the power button, then shut down. The restart option might work, but for things like this I prefer a good old fashioned power down, power up. Anyways, power your phone back on by pushing the power button for two seconds or so. Then see how it goes. This is an error that I have not heard about, but a reset is a universal problem solver. If it doesn't work, tell us what kind of email accounts you have set up (pop, imap, exchange) and how many, and also the settings for checking the mail.
Hopefully the restart will fix it though.

Thanks! My limited Android knowledge told me to try a restart, but I actually didn't know how on the Incredible 2!!
Anyway, the problem went away for a couple hours, then came back!
I use a POP server for my work email, and gmail for personal. I really don't understand this, as nothing has changed since yesterday, but the phone has slowed to a crawl!
Try a third party email app. I don't know of any offhand as I only use gmail on my phone. My gmail account checks my imap account on another host so it's all together, and I can distinguish which account is which on the emails through gmail tags.
Umm I think this will require a factory reset, because you can't uninstall stock mail nor freeze it without root
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA App
You can temp root, and freeze the stock mail app if that is the way you decide to go. Instructions found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068544. But that sounds more like something faulty with the software, because like I said, I have never heard of that happening before. I would take it back to Verizon, complain incessantly, and point out that you could have fixed it yourself if the phone had an unlocked bootloader
Do you have them set to check mail constantly, push, or are they on a delay? Can you use imap for work instead of pop? I have four accounts set up on mine, including an exchange, and three imap accounts. The fact that it just started happening leads me to believe something broke in the system, though. A factory reset and re-flash may indeed fix the problem. Also, do you have good 3g coverage most of the day? Check your time without signal under battery status in settings. Click on cell standby and it should give it to you. Or are you using wifi most of the day?
Sorry for the rambling questions, just writing stuff out as I think of it. Trying to narrow down what the problem could be.
Thanks, again.
I'm using the mail settings that the school requires, so can't change them. Currently set only to update when the app is opened.
I generally get good cellular reception at work, and I have wifi as well. I've been trying it with or without wifi today, with no changes. I'll try a reset and see if that helps.
I just mentioned trying another app because I don't see these problems and I do not have the stock mail app configured in any way.

I've had the Inc 1 and now the two. I've always turned off the (auto sync) this would require yyou to open your mail and manually refresh or of you use the sync all widget it works that was as well. Seems to save a ton of battery only drawback being you have to manually check it. Ie. No mail notifications. Just a thought maybe you want to give it a shot.
Thanks, everyone. Using a combination of all your advise, the problem is resolved. I factory reset the phone, then installed only my gmail account. This worked fine all of yesterday, so I finally got off my butt and learned how to use gmail to read and send my work email last night. That seems to be working well. I'm still getting email notifications, but gmail is only using 3% of my battery, as opposed to the 48% that Android mail was using.
Still don't know what caused the trouble, but I'm very pleased with the solution.
Thanks again!!
Email battery problem also on Nexus S
I have also the problem that the standard email is consuming the biggest part of the battery - mostly over 50%. I use an exchange account and a pop email, but both not synchronized automatically (manual sync interval), and I do not use them so often - max. one sync a day...
Anyone an idea how to improve this?
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

I had also the problem (as mentioned above) with the standard android email programm and a so related short battery life. Since I deleted all email configurations there and installed K-9 mail client instead, battery life improved a lot. Before I could use my phone about 2 days, now it lasts for around 5-6 days...

[Q] Email probs on stock GS3 after 4.1.2 upgrade

Greetngs. Manually loaded the zip the other day for 4.1.2 on my completely stock Sprint GS3. Other than the normal "holy crap" battery consumption for the first couple of cycles and the fact that I could cook a grilled cheese sandwich on it, everything's been OK except for these two problems:
1. This was the easy one. AVG AntiVirus Pro didn't like something on the update and it was stuck WFO and draining the battery in about an hour. Interestingly simply looking for running apps in the stock applications area didn't show anything. System Panel did. I deleted the AVG, reloaded it and all is well.
2. This one's not resolved. I've Googled as well as searched XDA and can't find an answer. Short version is that regardless of what my mail settings say, it's not going out for a sync to my Gmail accounts, nor AOL (I know....) and my Exchange account isn't getting "pushes" either. I've gone through the global mail settings as well as those for each account. All set to push if possible or 15 min if not. Everything is "prime" so it's not some goofy issue with being outside of prime or roaming. Roaming has all the same settings.
I can manually hit a refresh and it works fine, but it's obviously not supposed to work that way (at least it never has).
Any thoughts? Oh...and I've done a battery pull...haven't done a hard reset but I doubt that's an answer for this.
Thanks for your help.
bj
Aha! It seems as though the update turned off the "global" sync (on the scrolling drop down tool bar at the top of the screen). That said, it also defaulted all my sync options to "disabled".
Better now!
PLEASE REACH ME VIA EMAIL AT [email protected] AS OPPOSED TO PM. THANKS.

[Q] Weird stock email app behaviour..

All my email is pushed to my G3. I've noticed over the past few days that my iPad and my wife's iPad and her Lumia will always get emails first, followed a few minutes later by my G3. Sometimes the emails just don't arrive on the G3 at all (I've waited 20 minutes!). I have no idea what happens to them but they won't appear on the device unless I start the email app manually.
Today I realised that if the email app is running in the background, i.e. appearing in the task switcher (or whatever it's called) it almost certainly, will not receive email. If I manually shut the app from the switcher, the emails will arrive immediately and continue to arrive as long as the email app is not open in the background!
I've restored the phone to factory settings and it still does it, albeit intermittently. I've called LG support and they don't seem to have a clue and suggest that it's an android problem as opposed to a LG problem. No surprise there!
Can anyone help please?
Hi,
I also have push email configured in my phone, and i haven't noted the behavior you comment.
Do you have any battery saver installed? Or any restriction to the background data?
Regards
Sent from my phone
No battery saver, background data on as normal. Wifi is on also.
Just tried to ping the device and no pings coming back. Looks like the wifi is going to sleep despite it being set to stay awake..
This is really strange!
Can anyone help please? My G3 is the very last device in the house to get email and many times, it's just not getting them at all.
It seems to just go to sleep and not receive pushed email!
Is android just slow at getting email?
