[Q] Car dock micro USB cable? - Atrix 4G Accessories

So, my Atrix normally resides in my car dock attached to the windshield of my Jeep Wrangler. In light of the wonderful weather we've been having, I had the top and doors off. Apparently while parked at the house, somebody's dog decided to get in and help itself to my micro USB/audio cord combo the dock came with. I am in need of a new cable the thing came with. Where can I find one?

They should have them at an AT&T Store, Radio Shack, or Best Buy.

[Q] Car Dock USB connection... 12v, 5v or both?

I am working on a plan to mount a vehicle dock in a more permanent and professional looking way compared to windshield suction cup with dangling wires.
In my previous thread I figured out how the mounting will be accomplished, now to sort out the wiring... Handling the audio connection is simple. The USB...not so much. I don't want to use a cigarette lighter to USB adapter if I can avoid it. I would far prefer to hardwire but I don't want to go hacking up the cable for no good reason. I know the USB standard calls for both 12v and 5v, if the dock is set to use 12v only, then it is simple, since my car has plenty of 12v power to spare
If it is 5v or both, then I am stuck needing a transformer, and in that case disassembling a cigarette lighter adapter and using the "guts" as my transformer will be my backup plan.
My dock won't be here till Thursday and I have no idea what pins on the micro USB to even try to test and see what voltage is fed to the dock.
Does anyone know the answer or have the ability to check?
Where did you see that USB can be 12V? USB is 5V. Are you thinking of SATA/PATA or ATX (which all have 5V and 12V) or Firewire (which doesn't have a fixed supply voltage)?
You'll need a transformer.
Laurent
You are right, I was thinking of the ATX power supply.
Ok, well at least I know what I am up against. Thanks
you'll need a transformer (require +5v), i did the same for my dock / car (hardwired power /audio cables). i ended up taking apart a cigarette car charger and connected it to a +12v and ground and everything works fine. i have the wire coming up from near the back of my dash area so no cable clutter up front at all.

I did something similar, but I remounted a hidden cigarette lighter socket to a constant 12V source and grounded it twice for stability, so my phone and MP3 player can charge while I shut the car off and go inside a store for a second (don't leave it connected overnight though!). I ran the wires behind the dash, but I use one of my air vents that rotates all the way around as an able-to-be-completely-destroyed mounting location, then just cut a piece of wood to re-mount a new cell phone holder, etc.
For the Atrix dock, I pulled off all the suction cup mounting materials so it was just the threaded socket on the dock. I used a large enough drill bit to cut into the wood in the right spot for the threads to fit, and threaded them onto the wood to test. Removed it, sanded the wood down smooth on all edges, and applied texturized black spray paint to the wood to make it look like plastic instead of tacky looking wood. Mounted the car dock to it again after drying, and now the dock rotates with the unuseable air vent from portrait to landscape!
Hey, I've got a 2004 Acura RSX, it isn't a BMW.... works just great!

Nice! Have any pictures? I have a 2003 Mazda 6 and I have a EQ mounted in my top dash pocket so I was able to pull my +12v from there and grounded to my chassis. One question, do you get noise when you have your phone docked and charging while having the auxiliary/headphone port connected to your system? Im getting some slight interference that I can't seem to get rid off...

I'll take some, one day...! I don't use the headphone port really, I have an aux input on my aftermarket headunit that I connect my ZuneHD to, so no use for internet radio or downloading music to my phone, EVER.... with my aux input, I always manage to get engine noise, no matter how I position the wires and how strong I ground the charging devices behind the dash.... Looks clean as hell though, just sucks about the slight engine noise! Sorry I can't help
My Mazda RX-8 is getting feedback as well. I need to try another MP3 device to see if it when connected to the power and aux it gets the same feedback.
If it does (different devices) then it's an issue with the grounding on the lighter or a diode on the alternator.
I am considering getting a car dock but have a question; do you have to plug in and remove the 3.5mm audio cable every time or does sound go through the mini usb with a permanent 3.5mm going out the back of the dock? can't find enough info. the motorola site explains nothing; click here.

It goes through the MicroUSB - you have to use the supplied USB cable because at the end of it, on the USB-A side, there is a split attachment for the 3.5mm jack that you can hide behind the dash easily and connect to the back (or front, if applicable) of the radio
Great thanks so much for explaining it. Ill get one then.

Car Dock Won't Charge the Phone

I bought the car dock about a month or so ago, didn't use it to much. However recently when I plug the phone it, it goes into car-dock mode but the cord is providing no charge at all. I've tried it off the USB port on my head unit, and from 2 different 12v USB cig adapters, all three of which previously provided a charge when using the dock. Since I have noticed this behavior, my battery life has also gone way downhill again, any thoughts? Car dock just go bad? I can still plug the jack into the aux. input and play music through my car stereo, just no charge getting to the phone.
Sounds like the fuse in the dock is dead. I'd get a refund.

Docks for Gnex with Otterbox?

hey guys i have a gnex with an otterbox defender on it. i want to get a dock for my computer preferably with an hdmi and a charging port possibly sound output. is there such a thing? i dont want to have to take the otterbox off everytime i want to dock my phone
I highly, highly, highly doubt it.
Well there some aftermarket docks that work with phone in cases, and you can use MHL adapter for the HDMI thing..
It will be a bit of work, however, I'm planning on doing something similar. (otterbox commuter)
I have a slip-grip car mount, I'll be frankensteining a charging circuit onto it. I will extend out the pogo pins to small copper tabs on the back of the otterbox, have matching contacts on the slipgrip. Since i sync blue-tooth with the car, I don't care about hdmi/audio out. When all said and done, it's going to be a "no wires" connection to the car dock.
The electronics are being figured out here.
Alternatively you could by a standard OEM desk dock, take out the electronics and rebuild your own desk dock with somehow extending out the pogo pins, this option would give you SDPIF out.

Yes, some docks do work with phone cases but we're talking about an Otterbox here. Those and, say, Ballistic cases don't usually fit docks without outputs. Of course, OP could go with a simple dock and an MHL adapter, but I don't believe it's that exactly that he's looking for.

My Car Dock with MicroUSB Charger

I have been using this since captivate days, fits perfect near the gear where I rest my hand and change folders and use gestures. I got a separate holder for GPS as well.
I got is from http://www.dealextreme.com/c/cellphone-device-holders-704 but can't find the same piece, but they keep adding more
Nice setup you got there. I got a similar holder but it clips in the ac vent above the stereo. I like it a little higher, it seems easier to see when I'm driving.
i am currently making a USB/Audio out cable (testing for S3)
Micro usb trigering car dock mode allowing charging and audio out. (can make them for Home dock mode so you can stream pandora on wifi and charge at same time
then may make a few and sell them as i have a bunch of bulk micro usb connectors and 619k resistors and 832tc Epoxy (explosive Proof LOL)
i would just need more usb and stereo cables
How many people would want one PM me, so i can gauge interest
im thinking with time involved and testing ea and such low volume $25.00 Ea. (plus 2ish for shipping) made the way 2nd post (with that y cable vs a usb and audio cable)
www.fdcv1.com is my design (circuit board and casing and layout of all parts etc) and built in house (not best example of my work but most public)
How high can you extend the dock?
I'll be using one of these when it gets delivered,

excellent item, fits perfectly and my samsung s3 fits perfectly without sliding, i really like this product.
EverDock
I came across fuzdesigns[dot]com which is very stable while driving and do not have to find cables to plug every time you are in a car

has anyone modded their otterbox to work with the 11-pin mhl adapter?

i recently bought an appradio 2 head unit and will be installing it as soon as it gets here. to do screen mimic and such i need to connect it to the head unit through the mhl adapter but the 11-pin connector is to fat to fit into my otterbox defender series. i really hate to have to take it out of the case every time i plug it in to my car and i would like to keep the otterbox becasue i work in constuction and am constantly hitting my phone on things while in my pocket. i was wondering if anyone has modded their case so the adapter would fit in.
My Samsung mhl 11 pin adapter fits fine with my defender case. Theres actually plenty of wiggle room too.
Have a new gs3 and i rooted it. I will download ARLIberator once the head unit see the phone. Bought the android pieoner cable, had cable installed by BestBuy (which is where i bought the head unit and had it install by them) and then went and bout gs3 cause of all the reviews. Only thing that works is my phone charging, unit do see phone. Any help would be great..
