[Q] Desire Z with 1.84.708.1, Can it be rooted? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am newbie in this forum
I just bought Desire Z in Hongkong. It has been updated to 1.84.708.1 before I start join this forum.
I want to root it, but after searching many times I cannot find the links or references to root this stock rom version.
What I found is that in order to root, we have to downgrade the software (stockrom) first. However, the quides only provides procedures to downgrade from 1.72 to 1.34.
My questions:
-Can I root (without firstly downgrade it)?
-If I have to downgrade, can I use/apply the procedures applied for downgrading from 1.71 to 1.34 (while my stock rom is 1.84.708.1)
Please point me to the links or references so that I can look into it
Appologize, if my questions have already been asked by others.
thanks in advance
Cheers

I'm also in the same boat. Did you find out what the solution was?

Nope, no official ROM versions 1.72 or higher are rootable yet.
The guide to downgrade from 1.72 to 1.34 and root will work for you.
After root, if you want to get back to a more recent ROM version, you can flash the Virtuous custom ROM, which is based on 1.85.

Thank you!

i have one question about downgrade ...is it able to backup the offical 1.84 rom for go back to OEM for warranty ?
cause the downgrade will wipe the 1.84 rom already
or does your 1.34 able to check the OTA upgrade if i want OEM back ?
or any method to backup the 1.84 before downgrade ?

You should be able to flash the official shipped 1.84 ROM if ever needed for warranty purposes.
As far as I know, there is no way to make a nandroid/clockworkmod backup of the 1.84 ROM, since it would require root to do so.

As explained in the above post, currently there is no tools to back up the ROM without firstly rooting your device Unfortunately, you cannot root rom v.1.84
ROM Manager and Titanium back up require the phone to be rooted in order to do back up.
So, What I did before rooting, is downloading the new stock rom from this link:
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Vision
However, after rooted, you still can have OTA upgrade
So, now I have 2 shipped rom (i.e v.1.34 and v.1.84)
If I ever want to upgrade, I dont need OTA, I just flash it...
Cheers

thx for the help and the link help me alot
i just ask this for my friend cause he is worrying not able to going back to stock if need...
now just let him decide root or not....i dont want to take the risk if anything happen that cant return
ps : his phone is hk csl version ... not sure does the hk_cht version same as hk_csl version...and not sure does it effect warrenty

Did you use the goldcard method to downgrade?
coz i am stuck at step 11 of goldcard method. I am not able to copy the content of goldcard to removeable disk.
After i select the content in removable disk, "Paste write" option is not available
Tried it in XP and win 7..
Any help please..

If someone can post a guide on how to donwgrade succesfully from 1.84, that would help a lot of peoples including my self.
Question here ; i have another Desire Z witch he is root actually, so it is possible to clone the root one and copy it to the unroot desire z 1.84 ?

[Q] Unrooting with official RUU?

Hey,
i just downloaded the official 1.82.405.1 RUU for my permrooted Desire Z, it's factory unlocked, but will i be able to use this? it's an .exe file so i think that if i just run it it'll flash a stock rom, will it brick my phone because of clockworkmod?
thanks
Factory unlocked means SIM unlocked, which is not the same as rooted. You can use the official RUU as long as the CID matches your phone, or you have SuperCID after rooting. But you will lose root, and you cannot root without downgrading to the 1.34 ROM. Bottom line, if you want root, don't upate.
A better option is to flash a rooted version of it. Have a look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960149

Yes, that's true! Forgot about that, it was late at night and my mind was not functioning properly! Virtuous is as updated as you can hope in a stockish Froyo Sense ROM (a few extra features and some optimizations), and pre-rooted!

Stock ROM update via OTA

Im running mikes revolutiohd... but if I update my Phone via HTC's OTA... will I loose my root and s-off?
Sent from my Desire HD
OTAs wont work. You need to flash a RUU to get official HTC firmware.
Ok thnx ... if I ever do decide I want to get rid of root & S-off ... is flasing RUU the most simplest way to achieve this ?

i need steps to follow
1 - root
2 - S-Off
3 - Official RUU
Etc , just the steps to follow and then i will read it's topics...cuz i don't what should i do first
1st of all to root ur phone u need to downgrade to 1.32 follow this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
then to root i personally prefer a command line approach as u have more control vs an automated tool on what its actually doing, so try this guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#VERIFY_.28using_.22gfree_verify.22.29
all the links to files u will need are in the guide.
after that u will be downgraded , rooted , S-OFF , super cid and clockworkmod installed.
for the clockworkmod step id flash Version 3.2.0.0 from the forums, instead of the 3.0.2.5, in the guide, as its the most recent official version.
link to CWM 3.2.0.0 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1003723
do a Nandroid backup and install a ROM , dunno bout the official RUU roms as i dont use them myself, and if ur going to all this trouble to Root ur device, u might as well try some of the excellent custom ROMS, alot of the Sense roms r very close to stock and support arabic.. Ive used Leedroid & ARHD which are sense based and try'd Miui roms and currently back using Cyanogenmod7-Nightly

Can I flash stock Froyo RUU onto Vodafone Desire?

Desire is currently rooted and S-OFF'ed. Is it possible to "debrand" this way? Also this means I'll get the GB update (as I'm pretty sure VF won't release an update)
Thanks for any potential advice guys

Yes, you can. But you need goldcard to avoid cid error and furthermore, you will loose root access and s-off. So imho it is easier, to flash one of the many custom sense roms with gingerbread you can find here. On this way you won't loose root access and s-off status, but you will have a gingerbread sense rom (which is what you want I guess).
or is there a easy way to unroot? I rooted via unrevoked......

There is no easier way to unroot as flashing a ruu, imho.
Swyped from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
Ok so I guess if I flash the Voda RUU, the phone will have to do a few updates...... as the RUU is pretty old 2.1 I do believe...
if you instal the Vodafon RUU you will be branded again. And what is the point of unrooting? You can always find a rooted stock Rom, I am sure one will come out as soon as Gingerbread will be released.
And another problem would be if they release the update by IMEI and then if you are not at the original state of your phone you will not get the update even if not rooted.
True, best wait for a stock rooted ROM from here then and flash that via ROM manager

Please do not use rom manager, it is a horrible software which causes many heavy system problems here. Just do it directly from recovery.

[Q] Flashed GB official ruu. Can not root. Help...

Hi Fellow xda.
I have flashed the official Gingerbread ota update ruu to my desire.
After that i realized that i couldnt root or go back to Oxygen rom, now that the hboot version is 1.02
Before i had hboot version 0.93 i think.
I have tried the downgrade to 2.1
and root again with unrevoked.
None of these 2 methods work.
Is there any other way to go back to rooted and custom recovery to oxygen rom or hboot 0.93?.
With oxygen and launcherpro my desire feels faster than stock sense
Anyone else have this problem?
There is currently no method of downgrading the hboot or rooting the official GB RUU.
I guess all you can do is wait until somebody figures a way to root and install custom recovery
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Ops good job I never installed this. I read others having this problem also.
Same situation, precipitaded mself, now can't root and all my backups are Titanium backups, have nandroid backups but can't use them....
damn...
isn't it possible to downgrade hboot?
I am also facing this problem. Is there any solution available now?

No solution - check Alpharev/Unrevoked updates - if there will be a solution, it will probably be in the developement section.
Someone said that they used a Froyo RUU to downgrade then they just rooted. But it didn't work for other people but I think its with a shot. Otherwise you'll have to wait.

Hmmmm...I did not know about this...
I did not flash the RUU directly but tried to flash the rooted or modified ones from this forum...and decided to keep InsertCoin 1.0.9
How did the devs root it then? Perhaps, try asking Baadnewz and/or NeoPhyTe for help, since they have released the rooted official update.
I don't think they rooted it as such, but more of "ported" it. I don't know a thing about rom development but go and ask him.

The difference is that when u run the ruu, it will overwrite ur hboot, ur recovery, ur rom, ecc, everything...So u lost root, because the ruu restore everything as stock.
In particular after run the ruu, the new hboot installed doesn't allow to root again and doesn't allow to change hboot at the moment.
Instead, when u flash the rooted rom based on official gb (u already have root and u don't lost it, simply), the zip contain only the rom part and with inside the super user apk (that allow root permission), so flashing it u will continue to have ur recovery, ur hboot, ur root permissions.
Instead when running the ruu, so u lost root, there is no way to install again a custom recovery and there is no way to push the super user apk into the rom (unrevoked / alpharev doesn't work)..At the moment.
From devs side, create a rooted rom is easy, as they extract from the ruu only the rom and make it rooted pushing in the zip that they are going to create the super user apk and some other tweaks to the kernel as well...All this can be done with the dsixda kitchen
I hope everything is clear now

That you did. There are plenty of threads with that information available.
is there a way to root now?
we should wait?
Okay well then i guess im stuck like others :S
i was just thinking if there was a way to get superuser rights by using the terminal or adb.
i did also try the old root method for the desire that came before unrevoked. That didnt work.
Thank goodness...I was tempted to flash the original RUU...but my stomach told me not to do it...I would have been in the same situation if had flashed it too...
I hope there will be an easy solution in the near future for you guys
@andQlimax: Thanks for the information so...so, I hit the thanks button

That's prob as close as you'll get to the update without flashing the RUU.

Have the same problem as others here. Tried both apk and adb with GingerBreak. No luck
...but I'm trying to play around a bit and got a noob idea to use ARUWizard to flash custom rom. I've extracted RUU 2.29 and RUU 2.3.3 and replaced 2.3.3 rom.zip with the one from 2.29. It didn't work of course as newer version has been discovered but I was wondering if it's possible just to root the standard rom.zip and put it back. Is there any chance that it works?
Have anyone rooted htc desire with Gingerbread RUU update ?
