Desire 2.4 and 3.0 - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there. I have been thinking, if there is android 2.4 rom for HTC Desire. I am using cyanogen mod 7 (2.3.3) and I am satisfied with it, but I want the latest one. And also is there any stable release of honeycomb around there?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App

The simple answer for both questions is "No".
2.3 is the latest, 2.4 probably won't be out sometime. If it were you'd see it in the dev section.
Honeycomb is for tablets. If you want it, buy a tablet. There are devs working on porting it to the Desire, but to be honest, I don't see the point.

2.4 is 2.3 for dual core phones (not desire) 3.0 is 2.3 for tablet both are pointless on desire you would notice no difference to 2.3

Thank you very much. I will buy tablet with honeycomb, but I just wanted to try it out on my Desire. And I thought 2.4 was for every phone, but thanks for correcting me.

Sorry, but no
Probable, 2.4 will be a first implementation of some of the 3.0 features to phones, not only for dual core phones!! Im pretty sure that HTC will release a 2.4 for Desire.

Looks to me like thats pure assumption. 2.3 is not 3.0.
Neither is 2.4 2.3 for dual cores.
It is speculated that 2.4 will support dual core phones.
However there is nothing officially stating any of the above, so I'm not sure where this info of yours comes from.

3.0 was built from scratch purely for tablets, it has absolutely nothing to do with any previous version.

Where do you get this from? It's certainly not built from scratch. A couple of devs even think that the reason Google is not releasing the source code of 3.0 is because it's just a bunch of hacks.

2.3 and 2.4 are so similar that some manufacturers don't bother differentiating between them it's mainly sn update for developers and compatibility with 3.0 which is simply for larger screens e.g. ui changes and modified api's

Afaik Google renamed version 2.4 you saw on a device on mwc in Barcelona to 2.3.3 because there were too little changes from the first release of gingerbread on the nexus s to "2.4"

Engadget claimed HTC were describing ll their phones as 2.3 when some actually run a version normally referred to as 2.4 they said this was to avoid confusion, personally i would have called them all 2.4

2.4 is nothing more than 2.3 with dual-core support. And it isn't out yet.

Im sure we will get an icecream port which is just like honeycomb for phones.
this is a quote out of some news i read. some of you probably already know this
but for those that dont this could be usefull :
Details on Ice Cream
According to an interview between PhoneScoop and Google Android Engineering Director Dave Burke, Ice Cream will bring Honeycomb's "Action Bar" to Gingerbread. This is the bar that brings the contextual, app-specific buttons to the top of the screen.
Burke also said that Honeycomb's "System Bar" (the bar at the bottom) may not come to phones, but would remain a tablet-only feature. The hologram-esque visual styling found in Honeycomb will arrive in Ice Cream, though, as will Honeycomb's multi-tasking app switcher functionality.

yeah, HTC Desire will not support Gingerbread. Froyo will be the last Android update to Desire.
Gingerbread won't be out till January 2011 earliest. It will be a major change in UI and function over the Android 2.X strand. Desire would need 6 months to port it over. It also might not be easy to implement Sense UI on Gingerbread. Plus, new HTC phones will be due out in Q2 of 2011 I would guess, so Froyo will be last update on Desire.

The only thing Desire lacks from hardware is the internal memory. HTC definitely should work for Gingerbread update on recent models like Desire HD/Desire Z. If thats done porting that to Desire will not be too difficult using A2SD. Yea for some drivers it will be problem. Still I hope xda-devs can do that in few months. As far as official support is concerned I guess Desire will get an update from HTC for either the new Sense UI (as heard from lot of rumors) or a delayed Gingerbread support with less functions or UI features etc. At least Gingerbread is not too heavy update on Froyo. So I guess the fortune of Desire is not too dull unless HTC decides to archive it.
I don't feel like liquidating this nice piece of hardware before Honycomb arrives.
It's been seen running on N1 via submitted AirBench test, so Desire users will get it from the N1 release.
Hi
I just contacted htc support and asked them about the gingerbread. They replied me in this way:
With regards to your enquiry, Kindly note that all we have that gingerbread will be released, but we didn’t get specific information yet about the upgradeable device and regions as they are still testing the compatibility with all devices to decide the applicable devices.
Crikey... If HTC don't release 3.0 for the Desire, it'd be a pretty poor show... Being outdone by Apple?! After all, everything bar the iPhone 2G supports iOS4!

Trying the serious take:
It is said [read: rumoured], that Android 3.0 will mostly be about the interface. But one problem is that if you have HTC Sense, it'll be unlikely you will see this native 3.0 interface on your phone. But it should at least bring a lot of new stuff to your Desire. - Of course, it's possible to stop Sense from running, but you won't get exactly what I'm talking about this way.
The jump from a number like 2.1 or 2.2 to 3.0 is a rather big one, so I'm expecting a lot from it.
Also, anyone know of an official confirmation that 'gingerbread' is actually 3.0? Since there are rumours going about saying the next update would be called 'honeycomb'. It'd be too early to know anything about another version of Android if you ask me.
My biggest wish is just that this new interface thing they're working on will add the right amount of polish. That's one little thing I miss of Android, the consistency of applications and stuff - everything is different and there are no apps which share the same smoothness between eachother, but that's also due to how easily people can put something in the Android Market.
I know, if I want consistency and smoothness and the best looking interfaces, I should go for an iPhone. That's my own opinion by the way. It's just that I really like Android phones and the operating system, but dislike how everything looks so different from eachother. (unlike on the iPhone)
Please, Android 3.0, make the wait worthwhile..
Turns out 'Jaffacake' has been leaked and will be in a CM6 nightly soon ;D

Yep, as we've seen from the Froyo roms, as soon as Android 3.0 hits the Nexus there will be ports and when it hits the AOSP it'll be compiled for the Desire. It may not ever be officially released for the Desire by HTC, but we'll get it somehow.
From what I read at Phandroid, Android 3.0 (honeycomb or gingerbread or gingercomb or honeybread etc.) might never make it to the Nexus One or the Desire. Reason being it shall be catered to high end smart phones like the Evo and Droid X.
Plus the revamp of the UI and the need for a bigger display, most likely it won't make it to the Desire. There's also a rumor going around that the Android 3.0 shall have no other UI layered on top so no HTC Sense or Motoblur.
Well it's all still rumors. Let's just wait for Christmas okay?
P.S: I think Winnie the Pooh might love Android 3.0.

And you don't consider a Desire "high end"? Droid X and Evo might have a bigger screen but the resolution is the same as the Desire. The Evo, besides the bigger screen and 4G, isn't more powerful or "high end"-er than the Desire...

http://www.techradar.com/news/phone...android-3-0-rumours-and-latest-updates-706243
in the link you gave says:
As we reported earlier in July, a Russian podcast details how Android 3.0 will be restricted to high-end handsets (and tablets). The podcast explained that Android 3.0 phones will require at least a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and 3.5-inch or larger displays.
UPDATE: A Korean electronics firm is claiming that Android 3.0 will actually require a dual-core processor to run.

So if we trust the first podcast, So both Desire and Desire HD will support android 3.0.
But if we believe on second podcast; even Google Nexus S doesn't support android 3.0.
Is android 3.0 the next version of android after 2.3 ? Or there will be another version between them?
Thanks again
Who knows...
I read somewhere about 2.4. I can't imagine 2.3 is going to be the end for now.
Well the android platform is most definately as open as it has ever been and thus there are no hardware requirements, as everyone is allowed to download and run the code on whatever device they want to.
So yes the desire will "support" 3.0, as it is built like any other android release. Though it will probably require some better hardware in order to run smoothly, but google will not set a minimum requirement, as it is an open platform.
The ui though is most definately not meant for phones, and Andy also said so in a interview with engadget at CES. He mentioned, that what we see in 3.0 on tablets is the way the android ui is going, but that the ui was made for tablets. So even though we are probably capable of running it, i don't think the experience will be that great
My hopes is for them to reveal something new for phones at google I/O

Of course it won't but Google have to compete with Apple so it was natural for there to be a different version for Tablets and Smartphones

Actually, 3.0 is Honeycomb. 2.4 is Gingerbread (kinda like how 2.0 and 2.1 were both Eclair).
OP, there is no set date on when we will get 2.3
I have heard recent rumors, now that 2.4 is just 2.3 Gingerbread with fixes/tweaks, it will be out in April/May, and launch with new devices. And that current phones will have to wait until Summer to get the official 2.4 Gingerbread update from their carrier and manufacturer.
Honeycomb is just for Tablets and is 3.0
"Ice Cream Sandwich" is the MAJOR update for Android phones, due out last half of the year.

2.3 is gingerbread. 2.4 should be iced gingerbread to bridge the gap between Apps for 3.0 honeycomb and 2.3 gingerbread. Basically 2.4 on phones will help run the 3.0 Apps on said phones

Sorry, i've read some threads, but i'm really a noob in these things, and i didn't understand if 2.2 was official or not (also because in htc's site there aren't updates in download section, then where can i find official one?). It's better to ask someone in this community than live in the dark. To answer your question, yes the latest official version for the desire is 2.2. It has been confirmed by HTC that the desire is going to get 2.3 & yes 720p recording is a standard feature in android 2. 2 for the desire. If your looking for and official Rom to download, check the development subsection in the desire forum. If you don't have any experience at installing updates or roms I suggest you read about the pros and cons before you attempt anything as you will find all the needed info on this site.

Thank you for your replies! But however i don't understand why htc didn't updated the tech specs of desire in their site with the recording at 720p. Would it be possible to change the video recording format from 3gp to mp4/h264 (or other)? (Also with unofficial xda roms). Again Thank you!

I think it's just 2.3 in Q2 and then maybe, just maybe 2.4 later one. It's taking bloody ages to have an official release of 2.3 so 2.4 will prob take.... about 10 years. I wish manufacturers looked after current customers rather than forgetting about them more or less.
from what I understand most manufacturers will 'skip' 2.3, as 2.4 is gingerbread with fixes and there's not much difference.
however if rumors aren't true, and 2.4 will be ice cream sandwich, then I doubt our beloved desire will even get it :| (though I'm sure devs will manage to get a port working ;D)

It's behavior like that from manufactures that forces us to root so that we won't be left in the dark. Props to the all the devs for all their work.
