[Q] Rooting my HTC EVO 4G was cool at first, but its not for me... - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I thought rooting my HTC EVO 4G would be the coolest thing to do, which it was at first but im having a lot of problems with my phone now. Like, i hate that i dont have service anywhere, my wifi doesnt work, wen i was in ATL and able to get 4G coverage, i only had 2 freakin bars.. So, with that being said, i need for someone to kindly instruct me step by step how to unroot my phone and get it BACK to normal. this crap is killing me.

I'm pretty sure it was user error. What roms were you running? And by the way this thread should be in General or Q&A.

The unrooting procedure is in this forum. But before you do that let me reinsure you that rooting isn't the reason for your malfunctions. I'm sure its just a coincidence.. different roms, kernels, and mods actually help resolve issues and make your phone better.
But do a lil searching in this forum for the unrooting. But I hope you reconsider

I'm sure it's your setup... Hell, my Evo wouldn't make it through security at the airport. Some sort of weapon if you ask me.

Well, since its our responsibility to help anyone who gets in over their head here is the ruu to unroot your phone and make it "iphoney" again. Run the ruu labeled stock 3.70 and your will be the subordinate to your phone again
It will look like this; RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed.exe

Or take the blue pill, read up on some stuff and join us in the ways of doing whatever the hell we want with the stuff you bought. Because I promising rooting didn't mess up your phone.

wow give him a break, if he got his phone rooted in the first place he can't be extremely helpless. Viper, yea he posted in the wrong section(mods can move why whine about it?) I can clearly tell he is asking how to unroot his phone and go back to stock.
With that being said, read through this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701245
For instance, I found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
which has an one of many un-root guides. Scroll down until you see
================================================
UNROOT GUIDE
NOTE: This will erase all data on the phone. (Will not erase data on the SDCard)
and follow instructions.

his daily rom is Incredible S port, he should of started with something more capable than that lol

Well that sure is running before you can walk lol!
If that's the case op, please consider this Rom before unrooting. Always good to me. 3.70 version for best results.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=864501

I would try the latest Cyanogen 7 if I were you...my phone has never ran better and its still not a final release ROM. If you're first attempt was the Incredible port you really need to take a step back and try something that is not in initial stages.

Well you do gotta cut the man some slack noobs are noobs lol suppose to help them not throw bricks at them

how to unroot your evo ---
honestly rooting is the best thing that happened to my evo --
here you go.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141 -- thats the unroot thread
--- still dont get what all the flaming is all about.. suxx that he failed to put this thread in the right section.. i messed up once..
but none the less i also got stuck in a bootloop day 1 of owning my device.. i blamed fresh -- i later learned it was user error..
im sorta TARDED lol -- but learning is the battle that won me over.. the flaming just makes the situation worse
cmon now havent we all hopefully even thought if not already posted " which rom is best"
i know i asked all my friends and i got just try em and shut up i said thank goodness for friends or i would be pissed .. lol
none the less.. maybe its too much for him suxx that the person wont get to experience what we all enjoy about this.. but people
change their minds daily who knows he might even thing ahhh wth lemme keep trying stuff..
not that im his lawyer but flaming suxx.. thats all

OP! i posted in your first thread when you were crying about not being able to figure out STEP BY STEP instructions for flashing... that was like 2 days ago! i really dont know what to say... but READ READ READ the forums.... i have a nokia 5100 series phone i will give you for free, i think that phone will be better suited for you.
EDIT: if you are wondering how in the world this person got rooted, read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1006914 its a play by play of how he managed it...
if you checked this thread expecting laughter and need some.. read that thread..

Dude flash a ROM that lists everything as working in the OP. Sprint Lovers or Stock Turbo or Fresh or one of many others.
If you need to unroot, download the unrevoked s-on zip and flash it. Then stock 3.70 PC36IMG.zip file and put it on the root of your sd card. Power on the phone while holding down the Volume Down button and follow the steps on your phone to flash the update.
But honestly you don't need to unroot, you need to READ. A lot. You will be fine if you just read even the stickies in each of the forums.

[Q] How to ROOT from OTO Gingerbread S-ON and back to CM7???

1) I rooted my EVO 4G using the following method: "How to Root the HTC EVO 4G with Froyo 2.2 [Video Walkthrough]"
2) I flashed many ROMs, but finally settled on CM7 (7.0.3.1 currently).
3) got excited that the official GB ota was available, so UNROOTED (back to S-ON)using "[GUIDE] How to Unroot the EVO in 2 STEPS"
4)Finally, i installed the OTA today.
MY PROBLEM:
I cant get back to Root & CM!!! there is not much help for this, ive been googling but cant find a method that will root my evo from S-ON/gingerbread (2.3.3)...or even back to Froyo...so that i can root and get back on CM.
DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO DO THIS????
i just wanted to play around and see what the officail GB was like (knowing that i would LOSE root, not knowing that i wouldnt be able to GET BACK to root), and now im stuck in STOCK im desperate for all me settings, apps, and WAY OF LIFE with CM.

You cant root. You ****ed up. The new bootloader is locked so root has to be updated to work with it. Everyone said DONT UPDATE.
Sent from my......ummm...let me get back at'chya!
There are a couple of threads on the topic. Basically, with S-On, you are out of luck, and need to wait for a new rooting method. For future reference, no need to unroot to get the OTA upgrade. Either wait the day (3 hours in this case) for a rooted version, or just flash the OTA version. So long as you keep S-Off, you are OK for flashing ROMs and stuff.
Probably gonna be awhile because HTC waited until the gingerbread root methods were patched before releasing the update. Honestly, I'm impressed that they did that. It means they are paying attention to security holes and actually fixing them.
Your best option was to wait it out because rooted versions of the ota were being created. I find that better because you can just flash it to check it out and restore back when your done.

Why do you geniuses keep taking ota's when you are already rooted?????? Seriously every update it is the same thing. Just flash the rooted version of the update. All you had to do was wait a couple of hours for it to be uploaded to xda. Maybe its for he best if the people who made this mistake yet again never be able to root.

Jeez guys just let it go... The guy made a mistake im sure everyone hers f__ked up before.. Though I admit not as bad as this.. So at least point him in the right way... As far as I know gingerbread itself is unrootable... So you may be stuck for a while.. Check to make sure s is actually off
On a side note this is important to all of us.. What about all the 2nd gen phonea that are coming with s on and stock 2.3" .. Htc may say that they arent encrypting bootloadrra, but if we cant root that means sh_t.... Again this is beyond me, but at least lets focus on what needs to be done... Again this is gonna mess up everyone with a brand new evo or the 3d....

Thanks....yes I made a mistake but I've only had my EVO, or any Android for that matter, for a couple of months so I think I've been doing pretty well until now with no help...just researching myself online and in the forums.
This was the first ota that came out since I rooted...now i have learned what not to do...and didn't know that the rooted versions pop up so quickly...hopefully they will release a new ota with the bootloader unlocked...and soon

Who and why are they gay? I thought this was about learning, manipulating and using new technology and software....can't we just be helpful instead of this? It's useless....someone may have done as I did and now have to read through and spend more time on this BS to get to the possibility of a solution.
So are you thinking that the refurbished phone will have a newer firmware? I don't know about that but it doesn't seem to make sense....is that some thing like asurion would do? And if you do get a new snazzy updated phone are you promising to donate your time to the cause??? Lol

I'm new to the phone and love it, I'm a big texter and it runs my battery down pretty quick I have to take my charger to work with me or it wouldn't last me. I'm with AT&T and came over from Tmobile and had the G2x which I had rooted. All the Threads here for rooting confuses me. Could someone explain it alittle different please for AT&T I don't want to brick my phone. Rooting my G2x was real easy this seem alot harder

The method to root the phone will get easier as more people work on it(Once CWM works, etc) so just wait until then if you can't follow the current instructions.
For the Glide right now the only method of rooting is flashing a rooted ROM. There is no 'one click' root method where your current stuff is preserved like other phones may have. I'm waiting for such a root method, no rush since my wife uses the Glide and is happy with everything stock.

I kinda felt the same way coming from HTC phones. The threads here can keep me reading for hours, i rooted Vibrant and a Captivate and i was lost the entire way.
once the rooted AT&T ROM was posted, it took just a matter of minutes, and most of that was just downloading the files needed.
Follow the instructions posted or watch the video on how to do it, and once your done, you'll love it. Then, if you like, go to the app store and download "superuser" and "titanium backup" (free versions will work for now, but paying for them is really the way to go)
And before you know it, custom ROMs will here, and then the real fun starts!

[Q] Cricket Rom And Flash Help!!! Evo 4g

First off, i would like to thank everyone who puts this awesome crap on the internet for us retards to try to do something cool with our friggin phones. Second, this is my first EVER post on a forum of any kind, so please go easy on me if i sound like a complete moron...
Im sure its important that i put what im working with here. Its an Evo 4g PC36100 Build 4.54.651.1 with Android OS 2.3.3 Kernel 2.6.35.1,
Not sure what other info you might need but let me know if you got anything else i gotta put on here.
Oh yeah... i found the phone outside a corner store about two months ago with nothing but the "owners number" and an email address on it. Dont think i just kept it though. I called the number and left several voicemails and even emailed the person a million times in hopes that i didnt have to throw away a brand-spankin-new phone. They never got back to me and instead i guess they cut off the service (which i only used to call its voicemail) about a week or so into having the phone. My brother had given me a charger that fit one of his old phones so i could keep it on incase some one called.
a few days ago, someone said that i could just flash the phone and use it with another provider. I decided i would prefer not to pay for a new phone so i would use this thing. another person told me that i would first have to root the phone before i could flash it. So i did. I rooted it with the unRevoked/revolutionary Tool method. i backed up the original stuff using this method and later installed Myns Warm TwoPointTwo because the guy online said it was a cooler rom. so i was like what the hell.
I went to the cricket store and they said they would charge me 65 bucks to flash a friggin phone. i was like "naw *****es" because my brother said i could do it at home. Most of the descriptions for Flashing say i should have Jiminy V installed BEFORE i flash my ****.
I tried that on this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784776
Every link send me to some site called MassMirror And that site doesnt let me do Jack ****. I signed up an account on the site but still nothing. then I uploaded a 21Mb program so it might let me. But still nothing. So i cant download it anywhere. And now im stuck.
Can someone help me access these files that u guys put on here? is there something wrong with my PC that is not letting me download them? i hope not.
If i end up being unable to get the ROM can i just try to flash this phone with the Warm2.2 Rom that i have on it? it is pretty cool and i would like to keep it, but if it wont work, Can someone suggest an alternative that i can easily find that is either similar or at least moderately user friendly? i know im asking a lot, but i really suck at this phone crap and am looking forward to not giving a some dude my money if i can do this **** at home.
BTW I intend to get the phone connected (Full $55 Plan) with Cricket next week after i get payed. I just dont have the money today to do it, and would like to have the phone flashed and ready to connect, hopefully with a fully functional ROM, by the time i go to the cricket store.
Any help is VERY much appreciated and sorry again for the huge ass post.

that link you listed is for a rom that you flash AFTER you get setup with Cricket. In the OP of that link there is a guide that tells you how to reprogram your phone for Cricket. http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...o-Flash-to-Cricket-with-Talk-Text-Wap-and-MMS that was in the OP heres a note from the link you posted to the JimmyV rom
It might be a good idea to use a newer PRL than the one suggested in that guide (since it's old). I am attaching the most recent PRL I have to this post. Also found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002910. Im not on Cricket so i cant really help and IM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT YOU DO TO YOUR PHONE . There might be someone on Cricket that can help you more but im not that person

Well you won't need the jimmy rom until AFTER you have succesfully been setup with Cricket. So reprogram phone for Cricket then flash Jimmy rom. Also I'm not sure where to download the rom I'm pretty sure those links might be dead

FYI Jiminy V is over a year old at this point and is based on Froyo. I don't even run it any more.
Follow the flashing guide I provided in the Jiminy thread to program the phone to work with Cricket (this is completely independent from flashing a rom and flashing roms will not overwrite any of the "cricket" flash). It is the same guide I used to flash my personal phone.
No custom rom magic is required at this point with all the roms that have come out in the past year. I myself am running MikG. I like Sense roms (aside from their poor bluetooth support). I've never been able to get MMS working with Cricket on an AOSP rom unfortunately. I'd run AOSP if I could but I receive far too many pictures via MMS to give that up.
Flash a modern rom and if it is Sense based then use the dialer to enter into the EPST settings and change the MMS server urls and everything should be working as long as you set the MMS size limit to 500k.
I'm editing the Jiminy thread now to advise people that it is obsolete.

Rooting and sprint

After talking with some sprint tech's for a while about issues not only in my area but with the phone in general I found out that they can very very easily find out if you are rooted with a click of a button. I noticed that every single rom that I have ever used always says the name of the rom in the build number area of phone info menu. That is an easy way for sprint to see that you are rooted. Any way to change that or can't rom devs just not edit that part with the name of their rom? I know what rom I'm using, why does it need to be there?
Rom developers do that so they can ID the rom for a reason; and if you're dumb enough to bring it in rooted and the check to see your system, of course they are going to know, a five year old could tell the difference. Either put on a stock rooted rom, change the build prop, or unroot period.

+1... even if that was left totally stock named, and the rom looked like a stock sprint rom, they could still tell you were rooted... all they would have to do is look on your sd card, or look for apps that only work if your rooted such as superuser, rootuninstaller or any file explorer... take the extra minute and unroot to take your phone in.

It's usually a good idea to
1. S-On the phone
2. Flash an unrooted stock rom
3. switch SD cards
4. Uninstall or do not install any apps requiring root permissions
5. Lock your market (with an app protector)
before taking it into any Sprint Store for service.

I'm not the dumb one here. Assuming always makes an ass out of someone. And it's not me.
The rom dev needs to ID them for what reason? I understand needing to identify the rom from others but I'm not seeing a reason that they need to ID it in this way.

Must be contagious around here. If I was having problems with the phone in general I would first dump the rom and go back to stock to see if it was a issue with the rom or the phone. Common sense.
It was a phone call to sprint about network issues. About towers that were not working correctly and the tech I talked to at the Kansas center over all network issues could see **ALL** history of the phones ROM. Didn't matter what rom I curently had on the phone. It gets logged into the system. PERIOD. He told me it was rooted and told me the name of the rom installed and what day it was installed. I was kind of blown away.
I didn't walk into a store and say here's my rooted phone, fix it. Never heard of anyone unrooting a phone to call in about network issues. EVER! All I'm asking is is there a simple way to change the info that the Sprint system would see when it gathers the info about the phone to avoid detection of being rooted and a non stock rom installed. That's all. I understand you have life issues and feel angry at the world and need to make an ass out of yourself but if you can not just answer simply then just don't answer.

No.
Thats the most insane thing ive ever heard. IM almost 100% sure that sprint can't read your ROM details. In fact in order for them to even trouble shoot over the air, they would need your permission to link to your phone using the main network. So dude im kinda sure that your back pedalling a little here after some responses. For future reference try wording your ?'s so they represent your intentions or future actions. Dont get all boohoo on us when you receive a little criticism. The way you are posting gives the impression that you blindly walked into a sprint store without unrooting. Next time just tell us what needs to be done ask for some help and someone will def hook you up right.

It may sound insane to you but that doesn't change the fact that its true. I know what the guy said on the phone. He said exactly what rom I had installed. You're kind of sure? So you have no idea what you're talking about you so you assume something? Lol The way that you are posting indicates you just want to start something with someone for no reason. Stop trolling and move on to the next thread.
They don't need any permission to link to your phone. They own the rights to access your phone by way of the contract you have with them. They have every right to check the connection between the towers and the phone. By doing that info gets logged to the system about the device connected.
I talked to tech's in the Kansas center that deals with network issues. These are not standard lvl 1 tech's. This guy called me back days later and dealt with me about the towers in my area that were under performing. I gave him my signal strength at multiple locations and he would (on his end) zoom into on each location and look at what was going on at each tower. Explaining to me that the tower at my work was 1.2 miles away and at that distance I should have full signal and even rolled out a van to not only check the strength in the parking lot of my office but various spots in that towers coverage. Determining that the tower had very low strength and needed to be addressed. Also figuring out that my phone was having signal issues near my home which was in range of 5 towers. I'm not back pedaling at all. I know what I'm talking about and i have no reason to ask a question with false pretense to get an answer that would not be pertaining to my actual issue. But since you like to assume everything just assume I didn't respond to your thread and troll some where else.
Wow trolling huh I simply stated what was present. In no way was I even been harsh. In fact I was referencing the way you worded your post that was causing the reactions you recieved. Like I said you had to have given them permission to link to your phone.....So that being said your gonna have a very hard time on xda when you bash people for heading you in the right direction. Good luck with being like that...

I was under the impression that sprint serviced rooted phones, is this incorrect?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA
Yes, most will. Unless you get some ahole (which has never happened to me). I've had hardware pieces replaced countless times in the last 18mo., and have NEVER unrooted. I do think the key, though is it's always been for hardware issues (primarily screens and cameras).
Hell, last time I took it in, I had ICS on it. Techs thought it was pretty cool.

why dont you quit being an ass and take the advice given to you... and yes you do appear to be the idiot here. everyone is just giving you the reason, if you want the real reason, ask a developer why. If you are that worried about it maybe you shouldnt be rooting. We try to be helpful here and look at what happens. If you dont like it here JUST LEAVE and take your idiotic comments/questions somewhere else. I am sure you will fit in on some of the other forums much better. And I always wondered why people flamed and bashed SHESH! I now know why. You try to help someone out with suggestions and answers and they get an attitude... to all those people i say F**K OFF!

I'm not sure I gave permission. I was speaking to the guy on the phone and he was looking into different things and asked if i had updated to the most recent OTA update. Then proceeded to tell me it looked like I was rooted and had a modded rom. That was it, he didn't ask permission to access my phone.
You said I was back pedaling and that i was boohooing. Umm ya trolling! Being harsh whatever you want to call it. I didnt come after you, you came after me.

The point i was trying to make is, what does it matter what it says? if you dont like htey way devs make their roms, maybe you should make your own. Gotta love your maturity level here. You will not get the type of assistance you require here with this type of bashing and attitude.
Nope it needs to be unrooted and s off. I kinda agree with the other guy here mate. Your
post does suggest what he says it does. And flaming people for pointing things out like is f'd up. You need to-be able to handle constructive criticism to be on xda. Peeps here have heard it all,and don't take kindly to noobs acting in such a manner trust me on this one. Restrict yourself to just simply stating what and why, and you'll always be right. Cheers mate.

Should I Root?

I was just wondering if it should root my Epic 4G Touch. I have a few reasons for wanting to Root, namely, Free WiFi Tethering, and silencing the Camera. However, my concerns are voiding the warranty, and losing my data. In your opinion, is it worth it?
Also, if I unmount my Micro SD card before rooting, there's no chance of losing any data on it, correct?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
I say go for it and you got nothing to lose. I was also once contemplating to root
or not and im glad i did
Phones can also be unrooted and restored if something happens to go wrong.
You will have lots of benefits such as using custom roms, using root applications,
modding your entire phone to your liking etc etc...
Should I root?
Yes you should root for sure the android world is ever expanding and becoming easier and more complex Ive learned so much tinkering with my E4GT how to root use odin install roms over clock under clock change voltages memory tweeks Mali GPU tweeks. also it makes jail breaking and unlocking the iphone look like a sad little controlled by apple baby the android OS is wide open to any and all customization and you dont need google's permission to do it. so yes i would root any android phone its so much better than stock ROM and Kernels. Good luck please post any more questions if u have them ill help you out the best i can.
Rooting really unlocks the potential of your phone. I know most Sprint stores are probably different, but when I picked up my E4GT the guy at the counter had a custom rom on his phone. And told me not to worry about rooting/flashing as they can usually reset the phone (before ICS of course). And if they couldn't save it, then I would have to pay a 100 deductible. Not to shabby, and of course haven't hard bricked yet (knock on wood). Just make sure to read, read, read! And check out qbking 77 videos on youtube. That guy is a genius, and if you follow his steps to a T then you will be fine. Good luck!
+1 on the qbking77 videos he makes it easy to follow along. I rooted fiollowing his steps with no problem.my phone is faster has more abilities has better battery can tether backup make nandroids for safe keeping. Just as said above read and research before jumping. You won't be sorry you did.
Question do I have to unroot to update to ics when its finally released?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
Ok first off the answer is no if you do it with sfhubs method and secondly before any of you guys start messing with your phones do some research. "Should I Root" has got to be one of the most repetitious threads in here. A little research of the thoughts of others asking the same question would be a great start to your Android adventure.
Honestly, this is a great place but it does take up some of your time and brain power. Asking others about what to do with your personal device is a lill off center to me but its ok as long as if you destroy your own personal device you dont go blaming others.
Like mentioned QBKing has plenty of videos and please Please please read the stickys in all sections. I may sound crazy but too me if you have to ask this question about rooting your not ready. Its not for the faint of heart...
Side note - If you learn anything in here is that the upgrade for ICS will be here long before or minutes after its official. Never understood why people unroot to get an update to root again... Is it just me? *scratches head*

I really don't care that you can't understand. I want the official release. I don't want to use roms that have minor issues or have none working features. Yet anyway. I'd rather be safe. Now as for my question. I did a search an I get conflicting results. One says updating ota with root doesn't matter. Second one is you can update with root but you wont be able to root after.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
If you have to ask, NO.
Haha that Sprint guy at the counter sounds like me, custom rom on my E4GT while showing customers my phone. I love it when some ask "wow did ice cream sandwich come out? Can I update to that??" By all means rooting and roming your phone is not for everyone, but I say go for it. Don't expect everything to work perfectly, you need to understand there will be bugs and glitches every now and then and that's why this is my hobby. Always something to do

Hahahaha... ahhh you don't care hahahaha ok but buddy if you really did your research like you said you would know that.... Ya know what just go to sfhubs threads and do a little reading and you will find your answer which I answered already.
My bad this place is about helping others who need helps so here you go..You do know that sfhubs tars are rooted stock with NO I repeat NO changes... I have already answered that I believe but I guess you were stuck on something else I said.... Hahahahahaha
here it is below from sfhubs thread here
The ONLY change was the addition of ROOT to the ROM. NOTHING else was changed. If you made no other changes, you WOULD be able to install an OTA patch update (based off of EL29) on top of this w/o issues.
root, unroot to root again?
Playya Out!
it is definitely worth it, and if you plan not to root it, you should just give it to someone more deserving and get the iphone. i had the same question a few weeks ago and after much reading and a little bravery, ive grown to trust myself highly with some of these processes. really rooting isnt even what youre after for the good stuff, its just a prerequisite. i recommend reading a lot though. and like others said, qbking77 is your guiding angel lol
