Using a G2 on AT&T? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Might buy my gf a G2, but she's on AT&T. I can get s-off and all that, I would just like to know how well it performs on their network.
What are the 2G speeds on there? Any downsides besides being on 2G 24/7?
Thanks for any helpful input!

The 2g should really be the only downside. I used unlocked jailbroken iphones on tmobile and my only beef was the data connection. Hoping android gets as responsive(I don't give a **** what any of you fanboys say or think..ios is still smoother overall)as ios before the merger(which it should) or I might take a trip down apple-lane again.
But it should be a good fit for her minus data speeds...sorry for the rant lol

you'd be much better off getting a Bell HTC Desire Z from Canada. All the major networks up here (Bell, Telus, Rogers) use the same frequencies as AT&T so you'd get the full 3g/(fake)4g speeds.

I would love to, but I'm getting a decent deal for one locally so I can't go the desire z route, unless I find someone willing to trade.
My gf has a blackberry, once I unlock the g2 or desire z, can I just pop in the sim and it'll work or does she's have to switch plans?
Thanks guys!

Where to buy Desire in USA - contract free? (im from UK)

Hi all,
Im from the UK and going to states in October. I am HOPING that the desire HD gets announced before then and the desire gets reduced in price and i can pick one up contract free for my sister.
Where's a good place to buy them contract free? I took a look at bestbuy but they dont stock desire?!?
I cant think of any other US retailers...
Thanks in advance
There's no good place to buy a Desire in the US, because apart from CDMA Desire (which won't work in Europe at all), the Desire is not designed to work with US networks.
Regards,
Dave

It's quad band GSM so it works with AT&T or T-mobile. I'm using the former because you can now also get 100mb data for US$20 (expires in one month) on prepaid. I'm using it now!

The Desire A8181 will not work with either AT&T or T-Mobile for 3G - the best you will get is EDGE.
The Desire A8183 will work on AT&T 3G, but not T-Mobile.
Regards,
Dave
P.S. $20 for 100mb prepaid data? You guys are really being hosed by the carriers!
Is your sister going to be using her phone in the US? or in the UK? The US isn't a great place to obtain an HTC Desire because (except for the CDMA version) there are no carriers who sell it, and HTC doesn't sell unlocked phones direct to US retailers. If she's in the UK, buy it on your side of the pond. If she's in the US (if and only if on AT&T), she'd want the Telus (Canada) or Telstra (Australia) version.
My sister is going to use it in the UK.
oh damn i didnt realise it wasnt that big in USA and locked...
I was going to get her a nexus but they're not for sale any more. Dang. Basically i want a cheap Android phone thats has nexus' spec.
I am limited to Edge, that's true!
I have unlimited data back home so the option for prepaid data when visiting the US is great, albeit expensive.

Doesn't Vodafone UK still sell the Nexus One? Easier for you to get there than in the US.

[Q] If I simply Root the G2 does that allow me to use with AT&T SIM card?

Pretty much what the topic says...
My wife has a Tmobile G2... I want to move her to my AT&T plan... but she DOES NOT want to loose her G2... that thing is her baby.
So would Rooting her G2 allow me to run a AT&T SIM card through it?
If not... how would I go about unlocking it so it could?
Yes, it will.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160
^^ I know for sure using this method will unlock the phone. It's the one I used and it seems to be the easiest especially if you don't know adb too well.
1) Choosing the right option in gfree will allow it.
2) Just making sure you're aware - if it's a T-Mobile G2, it won't work on AT&T's 3G frequencies, so she'll always have either 4G or 2G.

Huh? According to quite a few people the G2X is the only 4g phone that can utilize atts bands..because its quadband..I don't think this phone. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure this device will only allow connection to edge

The T-Mobile G2 WILL NOT get have a 3G connection with AT&T. The G2 does not have the proper HARDWARE to connect to AT&T's 3G/4G network as far as I know. Only the Canadian Desire Z or (maybe) the Euro Desire Z have the proper Quad-Band radios that would allow for it to get a proper 3G connection on AT&T's network.
If she can live with 2G speeds, then it won't be a problem, simply SIM-Unlock using the gfree/rage method and away you go!
Whoops, my mistake.

Sorry to burst your bubble but the g2 will NOT work. The g2's 3g band is based off t mo's specific dual frequency set up (one for uploads and one for download). Att uses only 1 frequency and it's completely different from tmo's. If youre going to ask me which one, i dont remember but a quick wiki will answer that.
So, sorry, you'll need to get her the desire Z from bell (A7275) not the G2.

Rooting will not unlock it. You MUST make sure that Gfree unlocks the CID - then you're phone will be unlocked to another GSM carrier, however, will not be capable of 3G/4G on their networks.

the 4G that the carriers are calling right now is technically 3.5G. the ITU was pressured to lower the original specifications from LTE Advanced to the current so called 4G.
HSPA+ still isn't really 4G. It's simply forced to be called 4G thanks to carrier pressure.
unlocking your phone will allow you to use any simcard. Cost 25$ for unlock code if you dont have it

To be honest, I think you are the first one ever, to IMPORT a US-specific carrier-phone to try to use it internationally instead of just getting the international GSM version
a LTE GN from usually means this one: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_nexus_i515-4301.php
as such it is a cdma phone, but LTE requires it to have a micro sim. It has no GSM radio whatsoever. And most likely it is locked to verzion.
simply put, no.
Ha, right. Well I didn't intentionally do this, it just happened that a friend had an upgrade with Verizon and he some how got the Nexus for free. He's using his BB here in Israel so he let me play with it. Its nice to have a solid feel with ICS.
Bummer.

There's no LTE networks in Israel...
...yet. Now that there's this whole boom the Communications Minister caused by getting all the new carriers to join the market, I think that Golan Telecom is the only one who is planning on getting the whole system up to 4G (LTE) when their thru.
In the meantime, though, your out of luck. Even if you did unlock the Verizon LTE phone, and get a microSIM (which is, btw, no problem here in Israel, all the carriers have them), you still wouldn't be able to use it as a cell phone since all the networks here are 3G and don't support LTE.

I have an unlocked T889 running 4G (HSPA+) on AT&T. So long as you have a data plan it'll work. LTE radio is software locked for now, but really HSPA+ is fast enough for most uses and probably doesn't drain the battery as fast.

I have the TMobile SGH-T889...paid $25 to that cellunlocker cite, used their code with my AT&T HTC One X SIM in the Note II. It registered on AT&T, so I ran some speedtests with the Ookla app. I got test speeds in the 3-4Mb/s range, which in my area is as good as AT&T's HSPA+ network gets. The same SIM pulls the same speeds on my AT&T One X.
Conclusion, it works on AT&T 3G/fake-4G network no problems.
That said, the exact same phone, in the exact same location, with its TMobile SIM in it, gets 10-12Mb/s on the speedtest app. Not sure why I'd want to run the AT&T sim in this phone with that kind of speed difference.

tmobile 5G?

I've been seeing news rumors saying Tmobile maybe the first to run 5G...what do you guys think? I haven't seen any LTE yet even...this maybe just BS. On the other hand, Tmo just worked on LTE...so maybe it still easy for them to reprogram to 5G...? Anyone got the inside scoop?
http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/t-mobile-first-5g-lte-advanced/
I wouldn't say this is BS, but calling LTE-A 5G is BS. Really I think T-mobile wants to have the fastest 4G network and they may call it "5G" if they got 300mbs+ out of it, but I really think they should start rolling out 4G LTE across there 2G foot print.
They're all marketing terms, and their meanings change. Most of the current "4G" infrastructure is more like 3.5G since it falls so far short of the original design specifications.
LTE-Advanced is probably going to be billed as 5G, but it's more like what 4G was originally supposed to mean. Cheap and greedy telcos sold us short and marketed the intermediate steps as the final product.
2G, 3G, 4G used to purely mean something, but now the "label" has shifted to more around the raw speed regardless of the infrastructure. A great example is TM with their HSPA+ calling it 4G, which (like one mentioned) is more like 3.5G.
However, TM's HSPA+ (3.5ish G) in some areas can whoop on other carriers LTE. Look at my sig; great example.
Although TM was last in the race for the LTE infrastructure, TM has the most expandable infrastructure over all the other carriers. Very smart move. Why? Because if the other carriers wanted to expand they would have to put in place a completely new infrastructure for their next generation network, whereas TM can just expand on their current (New LTE) infrastructure. Now the tides have shifted.
So 5G for TM? When the time comes, yes TM would be the first to have it since they have the ability to build on their current platform without the hassle of putting in a new one.

Yeah really, I still facepalm at Cincinnati Bell putting up advertizements on the billboards about FiOptics when some of those places don't even get it! OTOH I'm surprised cell companies don't offer unlimited (fast) internet on their internet sticks.. if that happened I'd dump my ADSL and go with a stick.
However, I still find it amusing that cell companies still push tiered data plans (thankfully Tmo no longer does this...)

I'm glad they do. People are going to be using cell phones to provide themselves with home internet. The isps need to get with the program here. T-Mobile actually has a "grace period" of tethering for this sole reason. Fibre and xFinity are prolly the only ones faster than some cell companies. It's pitiful.
