Kernel used for extended battery - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have av Evo flashed to Cricket running Jiminy IV for the rom, it is rooted and nand unlocked. My question is do you have to use a special kernel to use an extended battery? I bought a generic 3500ma battery and cant get it to charge. Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks

well is your cord charger broken? if not then return the battery and get a refund or exchange for a working one.

The cord charger works fine for the stock battery. Hoping to get this figured out

You shouldn't have to use a special kernel to charge an extended battery; I've used multiple extended batteries and they all charged fine regardless of the kernel. I've heard that some generic extended batteries won't charge in the phone and will only charge in a wall charger, so perhaps that's the problem. However, that's not a problem with extended batteries in general. I'm guessing the problem has to do with the phone not recognizing the battery as compatible. Perhaps, there's a kernel that has a work around for that, but I'm not aware of any. It might be worth flashing a bunch of different kernels and seeing if any of them work. You might also want to try wiping the battery stats (shouldn't make a difference, but who knows?) and testing SBC vs non-SBC kernels (I think the SBC mod only enables trickle charging, but maybe it will somehow allow your battery to charge as well). If none of this works and you don't want to use a wall charger to charge it every time, it might be worth spending the extra money on a Seidio 3500mah extended battery; I know that one charges fine in the phone. Hope this helps.

What do you mean by "wall charger"? I have tried with the usb cord in my computer and the same cord plugged into the wall charger. I am not sure what else to try.

THe make chargers that you plug the battery into and then plug into the wall. You don't charge it through your phone. I think this is what he is referring to.

I am guessing that would mean like a docking station. I will have to see what I can find by way of where to get one and how much they cost. Other than that I am not sure what else to do. I have tried several kernels, but have yet to find one that will work. I am just hoping that it just needs a different charger. Thanks for the info

What I'm talking about is sometimes called a dock charger, but it shouldn't be confused with a docking station/cradle that the phone sits in and still charges through the micro-usb port. You take the battery out of the phone and put it directly in the charger, which plugs into the wall. It's like what you'd normally use for rechargeable AA batteries. Something like this: http://bit.ly/e8jXfQ. That's the best deal I could find.

That makes sense to me. Now I am wondering if I can find one of these locally or if I will have to go through ebay and wait 20-30 days to get it shipped to me.

If you don't mind paying a little bit extra you can get one on amazon here. Some of the sellers offer expedited shipping, so you should be able to get it pretty fast. I have one that looks just like this (I think it's the same one) and it works fine, but if you'd prefer a name brand one, you can get a Seidio wall charger here.

From what I've read about extended batteries you have to keep charging them past the time that the phone reads %100 since the phone only recognizes 1500mAh.

i have my evo running CM7 rc4 and i just flashed savaged zen nosbc and my phone doesnt appear to be charging anymore can someone please help

Turns out it was a bad battery. Got a new 3500ma extended battery and it is working just fine

agree dont need special kernel for extended battery, mine was just plug play and charge....on a side note, after three months my extended battery bit the bullet last night...taking it back

I need to find a 3.29 rom for cricket so my battery doesnt drain as fast. I also need to get an external charger for my battery. My battery life is about the same with the new battery due to the way the Evo charges.

Cheap batteries, possibly longer life...

bought these http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemVersion&item=260607429319&view=all&tid=0
just got them today, pretty fast shipping, about 8 business days to alberta canada. i had my doubts because of the price, but they fit perfect, have the same specs as my stock battery, and come with a handy wall charger too. so far i have 8 hours on one of them with my regular heavy text usage, some 3g market etc. only at 81%! seems a bit better than my stock battery but that could be placebo, more testing in the following days should prove wether they last as long or longer than stock.
just thought id give you guys a heads up, im happy with the purchase and now i can have 2 spare batteries in case for some reason im not around my car charger or wall charger. also have a crystal gel case on its way, will take pics of it for the other thread when it arrives.
cheers!

just to clarify, in case anyone caught it in the ad....
first picture battery label says li-poly, item description says li-ion. i can confirm they are li-poly technology.

so far today usage seems about the same as the SE stock battery, but i did encounter a problem last night. i plugged it in with my SE charger, green charge light comes on, but didnt charge. i didnt notice this until this morning when the phone was off and dead , so i guess they dont charge with the SE charger, but they do however charge very fast in the wall dock that came with them. i also tried using the usb cord from the SE charger with the charger i bought, doesnt charge. im wondering if theres something different with sony's cable, might go pick up a generic micro? i think, usb cable tonight and see if it will charge properly.
anyways, sucks they dont charge with the SE charger but i think it might be because the SE battery has the overcharge protection circuit in the battery? while these batteries dont? just a guess.
ill keep you posted, and i can get pics if you want, but they are EXACTLY as shown in that ad, like, identical.
cheers!

Thanks, interesting, I was mainly looking for a battery charger, I didn't know I can find one for the X10.
Do you knw if you can recharge the original battery or the mugen one with this charger?
The price is pretty cheap I may buy one and see it myself anyway.
my SE battery charges in it, but the two no name batteries will not charge with the se charger, or my old htc diamond charger with the se cable.... i dont know if its the se usb cable or the no name batteries... but they seem to have the same capacity as the se battery...

I bought the same batteries with the charger and neither battery would take a charge.
I would be very careful of getting a knockoff battery. They are labeled as being manufactured by SE but clearly they are not SE batteries.
Did a google search and it seems some fellow died when his knockoff batteries exploded as he was carrying his cell phone in his shirt pocket. Had he been carrying his phone in his front pant's pocket he might have a different problem
The article did not say what brand these batteries were knocking off, but I would still be wary of such cheap batteries.
i already stated they do not charge with the SE charger. and if you got the same as i ordered they are the bst-41 standard and meet all specs of the bst-41. do your homework beforehand people. batteries have been used daily since recieved, no issues , and almost exact consuption as stock bst-41.

Sorry if I rained on your parade but
They are labeled as being manufactured by SE (therefor are knockoffs) and they even have a phony serial #. I did do my homework and it seems that all those batteries have the same serial #.
How do you know they are same standard of bst-41 and meet all the specs, when clearly they are mislabeled - even says made in japan and I seriously doubt they are made there.
At least I can safely say they have poor quality control as both the ones sent to me did not even take a charge with their charger.
Talk about doing homework .....
In any case good luck with your purchase
jesus has this root wait made everyone mad negative??? im thinking we got shipped differnt batteries dude because the ones he sent me are identical to my se battery in every way, even the sticker on it is almost exact, even if they are knockoffs (which is what i was expecting) they are dam good ones imo. ive had knockoffs before but these charge in the same amount of time and discharge identical to my stock battery. maybe i got lucky, maybe you got unlucky, who knows. being knockoffs i guess u cant really complain for 10 bux. right now my 3 batteries are lasting me 7 days without charge....and thats on all night too.

All you wanted was to help and give your opinion and review.
Thank you for that!
I am thinking of getting a spare one myself, just for the summer holidays where I expect to be away from my charger more often!
just want to update this thread, its been weeks now, and i just checked my usage today on one of these batteries. phone has been on for 22hours since last charge...30% remaining, and thats including wifi on for i would say 5 hours, and 3g for the remaining hours. im using adw launcher, and i have gps off and bluetooth off. i usually have my 3g off as well, but since im on vacation and have 3 batteries i could care less so ive left it on. to my surprise im getting really REALLY good battery life. also have probably sent/rec about 200 texts since last charge, few phone calls, alot of surfing, mostly on xda app.
but yea, just wanted to put it out there that it is possible! should get even better after root!
BTW i just recently uninstalled task killer and task cleaner, i now let droid do all of that stuff....so...i guess the rumour is true....ATK does in fact use more battery...
cheers everyone
so I just put my stock battery in before I went to sleep last night, turned off 3g to see what kind of drain I could get. its been on for 9 hours without 3g, and I'm at 97%!!!! can someone tell me how to get a screenshot so u guys can see?

I have that one and for the most part it works pretty well.
It also has a USB out so you can, in theory, charge a battery in the charger AND use the USB to charge your phone. The phone's touch screen doesn't work if you do that, however, so the USB port on it is a bit dodgy.

I've been using this for months, and had the same unit for my previous Nexus One as well. Amazing price, and works perfectly, although it took about 30 days to ship from Hong Kong.
It's great to always have 3 fully-charged batteries on deck and ready to go when I'm low on juice. Battery life is no longer a concern for me, as it takes seconds to swap them out and throw the drained one back on the charger.
Highly recommended.

Random question but do you guys know if this is the same charger as the one for the HD2? I have two stand alone HD2 battery chargers at home. I was going to pull the trigger and get this, but it looks pretty darn similar to the HD2 charger.
Its the same one. My gf has an hd2 and I can use hers with no problem.

Because no one can find the friggin 1650s. Even the post dedicated to them doesn't have more than a dead ebay link for them.
Sent from my rough sketch of a Vibrant on a brick.
why get the 1650 when u can get 2800 on amaZON for under 20.00 us?
Well anything higher than 1600mah will cause the phone to get really fat.
I posted link above.
fat battery
I got one of those fat batteries from amazon and it doesn't seem to last that much longer than a standard battery. It also makes the phone look pregnant.
I am using a 3.7VDC 3500mAh Li-ion Battery for my vibrant and it lasts me for 2 days and a half without charge, Of course the battery is a little bulkier then the normal 1500mAh, & it comes with a back Case, its worth the cost and its for only $16 Bucks on ebay. Its worth the money Sweet

Well actually the battery was working fine when I received it. What you want to do is once you have the battey, deplete it till it fully drains out of power. Then recharge it with the charger they supplied you, don't charge it throu the phone. Once you see its fully charged. Chharge it for at least 1 hour more and u will get the full capacity of the battery. If your vibrant has a good kernel u will be set for 2 days straight. Hope that helps. Am using overstocked kernel

...he said dont charge it through the phone, which is the only way you can use the vibrant charger so that rules that one out, so by process of elimination and a lil bit of thinking the only option left is his came with a charger for the battery, probably a small dock type deal.
Just gotta think a little not too much to ask
i apologize for the late reply, I should of been more specific with the charger i was talking about. It is a USB/AC Wall charger for the Samsung Galaxy S i9000, Sprint Epic 4G, AT&T Captivate i897,T-Mobile Vibrant T959. You can view it on ebay, Amazon etc.

[Q] "Info: Battery Is Not Connected" Error

I was wondering if anyone knows a solution to this? I've been looking all day and it turns out that Samsung devices are programed to detect unofficial batteries and whatnot, which is probably why this appears. My battery (which I bought from a phone store) has been working for months, perfectly, until yesterday when I tried using it on one of my other phones (a kyocera echo that won't charge past 0% ) after trying it on that, it would not charge in my epic 4g, though it transfers files via usb flawlessly. I tried a few wall chargers, two different USBs, of which none charged. I happened to have an external charger which works, though takes almost twice as long as the phone took to charge.
The battery health is labeled as "failure" by numerous batter indicator apps. I tried hard resetting, flashing to stock (currently using an old version of stock). Some people have encountered this with some batteries they bought off of ebay, while other batteries from ebay worked perfectly fine for them.
Anything I missed? Am I doomed, should I take it to phone repair place?
Thanks anyone and everyone who replies! I'll try to post some pics.

yeah that's probably it. Luckily the 3500 mAh batteries w/ wall charger cost around $15 on ebay. I can still transfer files via usb, and those batteries will last nearly all day (according to people who tried them) and since one of them will always be charged I guess it can't be all that bad

No... you can't calibrate your battery. You can however condition the battery. This is done by fully charging for 12 hours. Then draining it to 0 and just doing that about 2-3 times and you'll be good to go. Just order it off amazon it will be the same price I have a review and link in the accessories sub forum.

Is it safe to use the Samsung GT 10.1 charging bring with the E4GT?

Trying to reduce clutter and use less outlets on my desk at home, I have a GT 10.1 and the E4GT and was wondering if it was safe to use the brick from the 10.1 with my micro usb charging cable for the E4GT.
I know they have different amps, the GT is rated higher, so it should charge the E4GT faster. Just not sure if this is safe.
I know for Blackberry's you can buy the rapid playbook charger and use it on the phones for a faster charge. Now that I think about it, I have used that Playbook quick charger with my E4GT. It works fine but I just hope I am not damaging my battery.
Thanks

Well, you can charge it faster but i will over time reduce the battery life. coming from an electrical back round, The best thing for the battery is bring it up on a slow charge. Lessens the chance of burning/shorting out a cell. L-Ion batteries are great for not having a memory like Ni-Cad or Ni-MH. So i frequently throw my phone on the stock charger a few times thru out the day. I would recommend you stick with your stock charger as it was ment for that battery. hope this helps.

Thanks, I did not realize that a fast charge can harm the lithium batteries. On a side note, lithium batteries can only be charged a certain amount of times correct? So if you charge your battery say four times a day, you have used up four charge times/cycles?
Thanks
A sprint tech told me that our phones have a built-in safety, and will not engage in charging the battery or damage it in any way if the amperage is incompatible on the charger.
Beware: this information came from a sprint rep over the phone, and I wouldn't even begin to know how to verify it.
Yes they are limited to certain amount of times they can be charged. I'd have to look it up again why tho.

No need to look up the reason, just wanted to make sure that I was correct in thinking that. I try to charge my phone only once per day and at night, if I have to charge it up during the day I will but I try not to keep pulling it on and off of the charger.
Thanks
OK. Yeah there are a lot of tweaks out there. Like if u use voltage control, use agat or sleshepic's TW ICS kernels and under volt and use conservative govener. Really helps battery life. Also depends how you use it
