[Q] First thing to do after getting an ARC - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi i'm new to the forum and am buying My first android tomorrow...
Just wanted suggestions on what precautions or apps i should install to make full use of the device.
Thanks in advance

Wow. No one bothered to answer or even comment? How indifferent people have become. So have you got your Arc and have you got the answer to your questions? Im sure you have by now... good luck anyway.

Well it's hard to answer such question to a person buying THE FIRST Android phone. This man didn't even share it's experience on smartphones. So what to do? Paste Manual here?

the fisrt thing you do after you get your arc is to show it off!!!
Then have fun

hey i am also going to buy a new one
so u can tell me some precautionary steps?
i have a bit of knowledge in android stuff.....so no need to paste whole manual just tell the short steps...i mean what kind of backup b4 modding etc...........

If you've had an x10 before then pretty straightforward, except the buttons... Root it, remove bloatware and take it from there.

@sinkster :- i donot have x10 before..........

Well sum ppl dont need a smartphone background to learn what to put in your new phones...
By the way i have done way more than i had thought with my phone includiing rooting it to 2.3.3 and have more than 65 apps running with 3 different launchers as well as 8 different Gameloft titles running on the phone...
And i have never payed for any app till date...so thanx for nothing...
and just in case you still wanted to know i was from the nokia smartphone family which includes e71,5800 XM, E90 and N8..

The next thing you should do is select the best launcher for you and remove the others... You can always install them when you need them...
secondly, you should use titanium backup to move your games to sd card...!!!

The beauty of android is the amount of customizations you can make, changing wallpapers or fonts, roms and mods, apps, widgets and so on. My x10 was my first smartphone, never made any changes for a month or two due to a bit of trepidation. After rooting it, and due to pretty amazing back up from the devs here, eventually had it running on 2.3.4, overclocked and undervolted. I've had my arc for a week, don't want to unlock the bootloader yet but it's rooted and now just a question of seeing what devs/modders are going to attempt

I had an Atrix which is a dual core with a gig of ram and this phone is pretty dang sweet considering it has 1/2 the specs. Heck if you showed me both phones with no specs I would think this one had better specs especially after I unlocked the boot loader. I got lucky and my XP can OC to 1.9GHz with an under volt no less.
To answer your questions...
1. Yes a lot of games are free on the market and there's a paid app free everyday on Amazon market. The more 3d games from game loft and EA do cost a little but EA has a thing now where like 3-4 are free. It can also emulate anything up to a ps 1, so nes, snes,Genesis, n64(relatively well) psxperia can play ps1 games perfect.
2. Yes there's roms and cm7 is now pretty much a daily driver for gsm phones, cdma is lagging behind due to lack of source.
3. Not sure what that is sorry.
To be honest this is the most fav phone I've owned next to my iPhone 2g because it was so innovative. This phone gets a big thumbs up from me.

3) Task 29 is a HTC/Windows Mobile thing... It's been that long since i sold my HTC HD i forgot the name of that program where you run Task 29
Anyway it's easer on the play. We can use fastboot to format partitions, so to format system partition we can just boot into fastboot and type in "fastboot erase system"
Thanks 4 the help guys!!!

with unlocked bootloader, yes
So I've my xperia here now Yippeeeee
But the Phone is simlocked to T-Mobile, so I've to disable the lock.
I've browsed the forum but i didn't find any thread to unlock the sim.
can anyone help please?
You'll want to PM the OP in this thread, he unlocked my boot loader/sim in like 15 minutes and he's really cool. It's $24 and you'll need a paper clip or wire. After you finish unlocking it your sim is unlocked and you can flash new roms/kernels and OC your phone and other fun stuff.

Awesome! He's a pretty cool guy, I think I had my XP for about 4 hours before I PMed him and he responded and had it unlocked in under an hour lol. Now load up dooms kernel and OC the beast then use Psxperia to convert some ps1 roms from games you own (cough cough) . I'm playing Marvel vs Capcom and wild arms

To root or not to root?

What are the advantages of rooting the Ion? With the method that is available right now, I don't think its worth it to reflash. I'm sure that soon enough one of you way smarter than me people will find an easier way. Am I missing out on awesomeness by not rooting right now?
Sent from my LT28h using xda app-developers app
Not everyone will agree to this... but I typically tell people, if you don't know what it is, or why one should do it, its probably not for you.
However... root allows many things... customization and the removal of bloat ware being the two most popular. You can change your boot animation, inject into the from, your own ringtones and remove those you wouldn't ever use. Then there's the software mods that people do. Changing the location of your clock, what your pull down menu looks like, etc. Then you have the super elite stuff that I know nothing about... all I do know, is the g2 has a rom with EVERYTHING animated...buttons and all. Its super sexy, and I want it. Yea that was off topic...but....
One thing you need to know about the ion tho. Its development is still currently in its infant stages. This isn't your typical grab and go phone for roms and other things. Its currently to a point where if you really want to learn, knows the time to be active. Whether that mean root now and play harder, or play it safe and wait while soaking up knowledge. Either way is acceptable. But ultimately, the choice is yours. In my honest opinion... I think its worth it to go ahead and root, and grow with this phones community.
Sent from my LT28at
Had this phone been released back when it was ready, we would have had a large ion community. Sadly that's not the case
Sent from my LT28h using xda app-developers app
I think the larger internal memory makes it less urgent to root. I have not rooted my Tablet S, because I haven't felt the need to do so. I rooted my ion though, and am glad I did. There were some apps and settings I was missing from my rooted X10, so I wasn't enjoying my phone as much as I am now. It comes down to preference and need. The community here on xda-developers provides a lot of help should you decide to go for it. That takes much of the risk out of the equation.

Big help with ZTE Anthem N910

Hi guys im looking for a little support on find a way to root the new ZTE Anthem from metro pcs... I tried the same way the ZTE Blade is rooted but that led to nothing but wasted time its running 2.3.5 and that SUCKS to be such a good phone at this price range...as you can tell i am a noob to this website but not phone mods so all support will be grateful thanks!
same here
Im hoping someone from this site will give us some help with this problem. I hate gingerbread and am starting to hate this phone. For having dual core processor i wouldnt get so many FC's but i get them constantly. I use ES task manager and still get them all the time. And no flash support (gingerbread) and third party browsers barely work...For the price you would think youd be getting a decent phone? Im starting to disagree. But hey at least the pre installed kung fu panda 2 (that i cant erase) so that should make it all better....
Any updates?

Do you have any updates on a root method for this phone? I've had it about three months and I've been looking for ways to root the whole time. I actually joined XDA just five minutes ago just to respond to this thread. So, any updates?

After searching all over the net for a way to root the ZTE and finding nothing, I sold it and flashed a sprint sgs3 to metro. I'm so much happier with the galaxy its not even funny. My only drawback is I haven't been able to get my mms messaging to work. Sorry for not being much help, good luck on your search. .

New to Android, Just got the ZL - questions

I tried out a family member's S4 and I saw the potential that Android had over apple so I got a ZL for my upgrade.
I am a bit new (I've used iphone 4 for the past 3 years). I was wondering if someone can provide me with some sort of guide that I can read about android, and what I should be doing after getting a new phone to ensure it runs smoothly.
my opinion on the phone so far.
the screen is a little bad compared to the S4 screen. The black on the S4 vs the black on this phone are much different but apart from that, they are both teh same. I like the phone so far, I only need to be able to find the apps that I was able to find on ios now.
Well if you come here then do what most of us do after got an android phone...
ROOT it...flash a custom roms, you can get many in here if you search...then you are done...apps in ios sometimes the same in android...
There are some assential app after rooting just be sure to google it or ask here if to know more...
But rooting need a little base knowledge to do and hope if there is a step by step tutorial, be sure to follow them exactly...but rooting or rather unlocking boot loader will cancel warranty..so it's up to you...

For the time being, I'd advise against the above poster's suggestions. Don't look into rooting or custom ROMs or anything like that if you're new to Android. Android is a great operating system, highly customisable and more fun in my opinion than iOS. I wouldn't expect you to need to worry about making it run smoothly, for your needs, as the ZL is a powerful phone.
Just search through all the settings menus and enjoy the freedom of choice that iOS never gave you. In the standard Android that comes with the ZL (known as the 'stock' operating system around here) you can't break anything, so have fun with it! Download some apps on the Play store, and build up your knowledge from there.
When you're more familiar with your needs, and Android in general, then maybe you can look into advanced options. But for now, they're really not needed. Welcome to Android!

Heres a good guide to migrate contacts from an Iphone to Android. Im sure similar exists for moving over texts.
If you don't already have a gmail account - you're gonna want one to access the Android Play Store.

OEM skin/software

Are you comfortable in your own skin? Is your phone comfortable in its skin? Rate this thread to express how you deem the skin on the Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra. A higher rating indicates that you love it: it adds just the right amount of features, it's visually pleasing, and overall it's additive to the experience. If this is a Nexus phone (you didn't think we hand-wrote all of these prompts, did you?) then use this rating to indicate how the latest version of Android looks to you.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
The stock feeling is for me very good
I do not like the stock andorid one like the nexus or pixels have
I do like more an different user interface then the stock android or pure android
So, back than when I had some sony phones I did not like it..
But now..this one I like..
Its looking good and has some good options considering its not custom
But if you dont like it
Get NOVA launcher, APEX or something
Couse ther is no custom rom support for this phone
So, either like it...if not go wich launcher to change the UI..and thats all what you can do
I will later on use the NOVA laungher.. maybe even paying for all the settings to get unlocked
Couse I use my phones so often that I get bored so easy and fast about the looks and feels..
And then I need the change of launcher to refresh my mind and fool me as if it is a new phone

I don't see the need for any launcher except the xperia home launcher. Be aware they most of not all 3rd party launchers will effect your battery life. Xperia home has support for many icon sets. Themes are available in the play store and other sites. I have purchased Nova pro. But using it on this phone drains the battery. The reason i wanted root was to stop all the background apps killing battery life. Greenify does this to an extent. However works better with root access. It's an ok phone. I still pull out my old note two bc when i get the flash fever. The camera is good, sound isn't bad and it's on the list to get oreo which is a +

Well, one developer said to me few days ago
That XA1 ultra has a very good firmware
But hard to do anything becouse Mediatek is
Not giving the drivers
He also said the only thing is to give some small modifications of the kernel just to get better battery stats and sot.. Also to speed things up just a bit
So there is no big need for other things than stock
Must agree with you to aand the dev who said that

I must say it is not looking good for this phone to get some sort of support
for flashing..
I am also loving to flash and try out systems.. but this time it is not possible for me
becouse of two resons.. one there is and maybe will not be dev support for this model
And second I got the bootloader locked status at NO or not allowed to unlock it..
So for you from my flashing experiance the best flashable phones are the google nexus and
pixel ones.. lately one guy who repairs phones said to me.. dont flash phones but if you like to do it
get the one plus 3 couse it is made as he said an ''high end device for devs to flash''
So, if you like flashing try out some of the devices or do a good research before buying if it
has xda support.. and other thing.. even if it has xda support try to buy with bootloader able to be unlocked
Happy flashing

Well the G223 is unlockable, in Dev settings and again at Sony website. But the only Dev that had done any thing is not supporting the ROM. I wasn't so much looking for different ROMs to flash as I was looking for root access for UI and device control but even in the beginning of the threads many were having issues so I decided not to go thru the headaches. So I'll use this, maybe pick up the one plus 3 or the one plus 5 and end up selling the Xperia. Didn't live up to the hype

That is a good call you made..
Couse I am now stuck for now with this xperia
and it is my own fault for not doing my research before
I also like modifing the UI or have root access..
But for now I have no will to buy another phone since this
is for this year my 4th device.. had motorola nexus then had
two huawei devices and now this one and it is for me the best one
with no dev support and locked..
Still I do not want to change device again for now.. I like this xperia a lot..
Yes, would love to have root access and dev support on xda but yeah..
My own mistake.. but for now I do not mind..
As soon as I will be feeling to change.. I will do so...
But this year I have changed so often I did not do this in my hole live to have
4 different phones in just one year..
Update. Went to iPhone 7 Plus. Got tired of all the Android bull**** roms out but not fully functional. iPhone not as customizable but it’s reliable as **** and that’s what I need so see y’all I’m out
