[Q] Help:Flashing android completely (without SD card) - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Android Development

Help: Is it possible to flash android OS without use of an SD Card? SD slot isnt working in my kaiser due to flex problem..reading through the help guide..seems impossible to proceed with the NAND due to use of SD card..thanks

I haven't seen anyone do that yet, but I'm sure something could be worked out. The problem is if you were to get "androidinstall.tar" directly on the NAND, there would be almost no room left for the install to take place.

not possible yet,

Read ALL of this for starters...

Do exactly as everything says, in the order given, and you should be able to do it on your own.

It's nice that you are trying to be helpful but please at least READ the message before making a post. The op indicated he could not do a normal install because his SD slot is broken therefore pointing him to the tutorial that requires using a sd slot makes no sense.

You can't do it, i already answer to this question in another thread!
Search button is your friend.

Thanks for the replies and for the one who defended..am no starter for flashing roms though..and i know how to search..was just asking if its possible..felt sorry for my poor old kaisier..

My apologies

I apologize for my work computer being stupid. I was replying to another thread and it posted it here. Was wondering where it went and now I know...lol.
Work computers running XP and IE7 no less, lots of page refresh issues.

Step by Step from box to rocks

First let me apologize for the title of this thread, I really couldn't resist. I just bought a i-mate jasjam and have spent the last several days reading these forums, the wiki, and all the other places that clicking things here will take you. I want to say right out that EVERYTHING I know about the Hermes I learned from this site, and that I am a complete beginner, and please do flame away if i am wrong. I'd rather get insulted online than have a brick in my pocket.
THe one thing that there isn't in the wiki (that I found anyway) is a current, step by step for total noobies like me who don't know what to do first and get scared by dealing with more than three file types in one sitting, that uses the SD card method. It seems that the SD method is faster, easier (especially if you run Vista), and even a little safer that the "old school" RUU method.
Soooo, I'd like to write a new wiki page to this effect, and am more than happy to put in screenshots, links, host file downloads, etc. What i'd REALLY appreciate is if you senior types could take a look at this simple outline and tell me if there is something drastically wrong with it. After a good schooling I'll post a complete article with more copied info from the threads and complete sentences and punctuation and stuff.
PROPOSED "DAY-ONE, JUST OUT OF THE BOX CAN"T WAIT TO" UPGRADE
1.enter bootloader mode to check sp version
2.format an SD card to FAT32, checking card integrity and fixing errors
3.Use Winar to Extract the .NHB file from Hard-SP-v7.zip, transfer to SD card with card reader and rename to HERMIMG.NHB
4.put the card in the phone and enter the bootloader by pressing side OK, Power, and soft reset button (with stylus). Once in bootloader mode accept the upgrade
This safe-nates things up, and CID unlocks the phone, right?
5.re-format SD card to FAT32, checking card integrity and fixing errors
6. Use WinRar to Extract the .NBH from HERM_Radinly_1.41.00.10_CustomRUU, transfer it to the SD card and rename it HERMIMG.NBH
7. put the card in the phone and enter the bootloader by pressing side OK, Power, and soft reset button (with stylus). Once in bootloader mode accept the upgrade
8. check the radio version in system info
9. re-format the SD card for FAT32, checking integrity and fixing errors
10. Use WinRar to Extract the .NBH from WM6 ROM of choice, transfer it to SD card and rename HERMIMG.NBH
11. Put the card in phone and enter the bootloader mode as above, when in bootloader accept the upgrade. Follow instructions from mrvanx for activesync
12. transfer my CAB files for applications to (Temp?) folder on card and then run each of them to install my apps (Skype, CeStar,TengoThumb, etc.)
Does this sound about right? Thoughts? Flames?
Thanks to all for such fantastic work, donations on the way for all who wrote files I have downloaded over the past few days, you guys rock!
whats with the SD card upgrading?
you can run HardSPL by itself, you dont have to extract and put the nbh file on ur storage card.. unneccesarry steps if you ask me..

Well, I run Vista, and I like the idea of not having to fiddle with the drivers in order to do RUU, and I saw a few posts that some people had difficulty getting things to work with Vista. Also, posts have led me to beleive that it is faster to do it this way, which would lead to less chances of things going wrong (it's really hard to make Vista stop doing things in the background all the time). Also, there are already really awesome guides for doing it the RUU way, but not one for a complete SPL/Radio/ROM upgrade using this method, I think it appeals to a lot of people, including the dreaded Mac user. If it's not actually a good way please do explain, and finally, to me it just seems plain easier. I've only found a few posts that had troubles with the method and dozens that praised it. thanks for replying!!
Madcap, thanks for the input, I was going for continuity but I take your advice, keep 'em coming!!!
oh...you didn't mention Vista in your original thread.. lol .. best advice I can give you ... Throw vista in the trash.

Yep, I ll drink to that
ugh .. u mentioned the D work.. great.. now I'm going to relapse..
Step 4 does not CID unlock the device. It looks like it just installs Hard SPL which will allow the user to recover from a bad radio flash.
Of course this should not matter as there really isn't a need to CID unlock any more (unless you want to unlock/unhide your EXT ROM)
HardSPL just makes your phone Temporary superCID right or something to that effect.

Cool, it was my understanding that Hard SPL temporarily makes you super CID (as Madcap said) allowing you to flash on any ROM you want, for all intents and purposes is this not pretty much the same thing as unlocking? Not arguing, just trying to clarify. A lot of noobs know that CID is an issue and that they need to disable it somehow when they flash......
Please keep comments coming,Thanks!!!!
P.S. MOD, in my sleep addledness I think I posted this in the wrong place, should it be moved to the UPGRADE forum? THANKS!!
P.P.S. Drinking is the only way I can tolerate having a Vista machine, we all were so happy about getting our new laptops this year, and then we turned them on....it's like getting a christmas present in the shape of a new bicycle, but when you tear off the wrapping paper there's really a tetanus shot inside.
SUCCESS!!
I followed the OP steps (with very minor modification) and was able to go from a completely new, out of the box, never even put in a sim card phone to HardSP-V7, upgraded radio, new WM6 ROM (Schaps, this ROM is awesome, thanks!!!). All without using a cable or upgrading any drivers. From beginning of first download to totally upgraded was one hour. Why anyone would ever do this the old-fashioned way is beyond me, especially if you are running Vista. I'm making a tutorial and have collected the few little things you need to do this and will add a wiki article with pics ASAP.
Thanks to everyone for all the great info and hard work here, a complete noob like me can go from 0-60 entirely by reading this site. I am loving this phone more by the minute!!

Hi mlalahoi,
I am getting a lot of issues after installing CE-Start. Played virtually with every WM 6 ROM arround and still experiencing freezing.
Have run Shadow and LVSW without CE-Start for couple of days and both ROMs was very stable and fast. After CE-Start lot of problems.
Will be nice to hear your experience with the Chinese characters

Did you download the 2.8 Suite from the mobem website here AND use thier installer to install TO THE PHONE (install to SD doesn't work)?
I had similar problems when I went through the process of getting my hermes to be dual English and Chinese. THe first time I tried to manually install some cab files I found on a chines forum somewhere, totally jerked my normally very good Shaps ROM. I ended up having to do a hard reset, trying to uninstall the cabs just caused an unrecoverable hang. Make sure you use the official, latest install program and install to the phone, mines been flawless ever since.
Without registering you don't get the dictionary, but you can get a really good free version of CEDICT for mobiles here, it allows you to search by pinyin w/wo tones, english, or chinese characters. If you have trouble getting it to copy-paste between other apps try this app from the Wiki.
I have a collection of good ppc Chinese learning tools, pm me if you want to set up a file transfer, and do check out www.mandarintools.com for all your CHinese computing needs, no affiliation, just a great site.
Hi mlalahoi,
Thanks for the links! Actually I was using all the time v2.8 of Ce-Star, including the original installer - never used cabs to install. I found that "my" version of Ce-Star package is 6KB less than the one you recomended - here might be the problem. During the weekend will flash a new Rom and will play with the "new" Ce-Star 2.8 -- hope it will rock
I am using the ppc version of 金山 (PowerWord) and it serves me well. My Chinese characters needs are very simple ones - to be able to reed text and e-mails in Chinese, and rarely to answer using characters.
Will send you feedback about stability of the ROMs with "new" Ce-Star

[Q] Is it possible to install roms to sd?

if i can how do i do it
ahahahahahano
First off wrong section this should be in the q and a section... edit : response removed as I miss read the OP's question
Plague you should have accurate info before spouting off
Moved to Q&A as this is not development.
RavenWulf: I answered the question posed, which was not "can I install APPS to an SD card". The question, in case you are incapable of reading comprehension, was "can I install ROMs to an SD card".
Maybe you should read before accusing me of being inaccurate.

even with me miss reading it you were wrong... how do you think the guys and gals who are running 2.1 and 2.2 on the HTC HD2 are doing it?
if the OP is looking to boot into Android from the SD then their question would be redundant and cause issues as the phone is already running Android.
however if the OP was asking about transferring the mentioned ROM to their SD from their computer so the can install it, then the answer would be you transfer the file the same as you would for pics, music and such.
Are you seriously going to try and pull the "I'm still right even though I'm clearly wrong" thing?
Last I checked, this isn't the HTC HD2 forum, so trying to defend being wrong that way won't work. He did not ask about "copying a ROM" to the SD card to install it, so trying to defend being wrong that way won't work.
You are wrong. Deal with it.
Thanks
lol!!! thanks for the answers. i was wondering because a friend of mine was running roms from sd on mt3g
You can't run roms from sdcard like the hd2 way but you can flash a rom and create a nandroid backup which saves it the exact way you have it and switch between roms back and forth

[Q] Help needed! rooting

Hello everyone
I am looking for some guidance as I have a stock DHD 2.3 (freshly updated) If there's someone who can tell me the steps and eventually the links because I don't know the order of the rooting process nor where to find the tools I shall hit the thanks button madly and hope I won't end with a big digital brick..
also any recommended ROMS?
thanks in advance
Well, you need to downgrade first DOWNGRADE LINK.
Then after radio S-OFF (you dont have to, but it'll be much better) you can install ROM Manager and flash CWM recovery.
The CWM recovery will allow you to flash new Custom ROMs to your device.
You can then go back up to 2.3, or do whatever you want really.
I can't suggest any ROM to you, because everyone has their own taste in ROMs. I flashed a Stock-ROOTED 2.3 ROM and modified it to my liking using many different MODs out there.
But the android development section contains many different ROMs.
EDIT: CWM recovery will add many advantages to your phone. One big advantage is backing up your phones current ROM (aka Nandroid).
If anything goes wrong while trying to flash other ROMs or MODs, you can just simply restore your backup (and if you know where the problem is, you can restore only part of the backup). This feature is what made me install (or flash) CWM recovery.
And plus, it makes flashing ROMs and other stuff so easyyyyyy!!!
This forum isn't here to hold peoples hands to get them through rooting processes etc. All information is gathered in quite simple guides that are available for everyone to read so we won't have to explain over and over again to the thousands of new users how to do everything. Your question have been asked countless times and you would have found multiple threads with everything explained thouroughly if you used the search function (read the rules). But instead you created a new thread and made it harder for the next person to find information because this forum is filling up with a lot of similar threads that could have been avoided if people spent some time searching the forum. I don't mean to be offensive, but you have to be able to do something on your own if you want to enter the world of custom roms etc. New users should do some researching so that they know what they're getting in to and not just jump in head first and hope that somebody does everything for them
Anyway, here's something to get you started:

I tried to get Visionary+ but it has Trojan virus... anywhere else safer?!
and I don't get it, after permaroot is S-OFF (radio s-off) and after that what?! after my phone is S-OFF I install RomManager or is there sth in between?
Heres a genuine link .. LINK
well, after S-OFF, you install ROM Manager, then choose the first option from ROM Manager ('flash clockworkMod Recovery').
--ROM Manager and CWM recovery is not a MUST, but is needed to flash ROM and MODs to your device.
let me make it clear...
radio S-OFF is to allow you to flash new radios(if you dont know what a radio is, search ).
ENG S-OFF allows you to do more extreme things and can get you out of a 'nearly bricked' device (so i've heard). It makes your phone VERY flexible and allows you to modify nearly everything!
^--this is to my knowledge--^
anyway, this isnt needed to be rooted, it just increases the amount of thing you can do with your phone.
CWM recovery flashes over your stock HTC Recovery. Its also not a must, but also allows MUCH more flexibility.

Ignore that virus warning, it'd be your AV identifying it as a rootkit, which oddly enough it is. If you can add it to your whitelist or disable your AV whilst downloading/moving it from your PC to your phone.

[Q] Won't boot and /sdcard/ won't mount

I was on stock FI27 (I think) and tried to root using:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2139759
I booted successfully into CWM after the ODIN, but when I tried to reboot the phone, it got stuck on the boot screen (with the lock). So I thought I would just go into recovery and flash a custom ROM, but I get the following errors when I try to access the external SD card:
"E:unable to write to ums lunfile" and "Error mounting sdcard!"
The internal SD Card is available though. I've tried pushing the ROM to the internal via adb, but it wont show up. Nothing shows up when the phone is plugged in to the computer. Any suggestions?
Was able to get it to boot by flashing this in ODIN:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1932032
But my file manager is showing no External SD Card. So that issue has not been resolved..
Also, as I'm on FI27, what is the best way to install CWM Recovery? The Auto-Root tool option D only goes to FF18..
Bump.
Try unmounting your external in settings, storage and then remounting.
Just out of curiosity, why not just use a one click to root? Much easier and less chance of error.

Usually when it comes to stuff on XDA, the popular method may work for you. But that isn't always the case, just think back to high school for a moment. The "popular" kids were always the trend setters whether it be right or wrong, the sheep followed everything they did or said.
Here on XDA or any other tech site, it's always a good rule of thumb to see what the popular method is, read comments from other users, see what works for your situation and what you are trying to accomplish, and determine what the best and easiest option will be that is known to work.
I would rather see new users asking questions before flashing something or altering their phone than see a new user follow incorrect information and result in a hard brick. Basically just read, read some more, ask yourself if you understand what you are doing, read again, then if you are still unsure feel free to ask a question here in Q&A while making it as short and to the point as possible. There are many of us who have been here for over a year and some almost two years that are willing to give you the best answer for your situation.

I appreciate the advice. But I read comments and read the instructions carefully for each method. The instructions for the method I chose were the newest set and were applicable to the firmware I was on, and almost everyone was successful. I guess I'll ask in his thread how to fix the problem. I've been flashing for about 2 years now, but have no experience with Epic 4G Touch (doing this for a friend, as I own a SGSIII). Thanks though.

[Q] Tech info

Hi guys.
Could we please get a write-up on some technical info about the internal arrangement of the Galaxy S3?
Which partitions exist and how are they mounted?
How is the Internal SD card being used?
Where are the installed apps located?
What's involved in installing a .APK file?
How do you move an installed app from internal to external storage?
How do you wipe out the entire phone storage and memory and restore it to factory settings?
What do you do when your internal storage runs low?
When do you use ODIN and when do use use Recovery mode?
What is the USB Debug setting used for?
How come some models can have custom ROMS while others cannot?
How do you boot the cell from an external SD card in case normal bootup and custom recovery fail?
I'd like to have explanations to all of the above, along with addition suggested information
in one easy-to-access location, without having to search the entire forums for bits and pieces.
Can we do this? Is this even feasible?
I'd love to see this happen!
Thanks everyone! :good:

For the simple reason that only the developers have the answers, and I am not a developer.
If I were, I wouldn't have made the initial post.
That's not true, most of what you asked about can be found with a little searching and most people here are not developers, just users with knowledge.

I have to agree with metalfan78 on this one. The guide is very much possible to put together and I'm sure that if you or someone else decides to put this guide together that if search doesn't find the answer to question that a quick pm to a developer will!
