Screen protectors... - EVO 4G Accessories

Are they really that necessary? I had my hero for a while without one and never had a problem. I'm just saying, because I got the invisible shield one and now it sucks. For a couple months its cool, but after a while they just make my screen look ****ty. Peeling off one corner. And it looks like when I first attempted to put it on particles in the air, dust, etcetera stuck to it. There's no avoiding that. At a certain angle you can see the little particles. Its really lame I think I'm about to Peel this crap off.
Does anyone use on?

The evo screen is much more durable than the hero screen was.
I used a zagg on my evo for several months but after seeing how much it was taking away from my "viewing pleasure" I took it off and haven't looked back. I actually dropped and cracked the corner of my evo a while back and before I sent it back I TRIED to scratch the screen with keys, knives, razor blades, rocks.. I literally couldn't scratch it. I'm sure a diamond ring would do the job but at this point, imo, no screen protector is worth the money or detracting from screen clarity.

I had an invisible shield for months and was able to live with it until it just got too nasty to look at... Had it off for a couple weeks now and can honestly say I should've saved my money and left it on the rack... just my .02

I've had an invisible shield since september, and had best buy install it. It looks great, but it feels weird to the touch. I was really paranoid about the seen getting ugly, but from what I've read, there's really nothing to worry about. My friend got rid of her shield after she ruined it, and she's pretty happy with it bare.

So to add to the OP I would also like to ask those of you that go bare, do you keep your phone in your pants pocket? Does it get scratched by keys, change, etc. when taking it out or putting it back in your pocket? The reason I ask is because I use InvisibleShield and when it starts to look like crap I pay the $2.99 shipping and they send me a new one as long as I send the old one back within 60 days there are no other charges. I am on my 3rd InvisibleShield on my EVO now, but I would seriously consider going bare if it is truly that hard to scratch the screen. Thanks.

It is truly hard to scratch the screen. I've had a bare screen on my Evo forever and I can't imagine it otherwise. Dropping it and cracking the screen is another story

Bare since day one and zero scratches. I carry my keys in a different pocket tho.

I would recommend the Realook screen protectors. You can hardly tell it's even there. You have to be really careful when you install them. Smallest piece of dirt under them will really mess it up. I got my EVO at launch and just recently added the screen protector. I had a few scratches but nothing major.

I just bought a couple sets of these
http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Screen-Protector-for-HTC-EVO-4G-Pack-of-2/5497913/product.html
I've had a screen protector on my EVO since I got it on launch day. I had the Zagg on there for a little while but I hated the way it felt and it started to turn yellow after only about a month. I had several other protectors I bought from Sprint and such but when I got my Commuter case I put the Otterbox protector on there and I've had it on since. My Otterbox protector was starting to get a bit scratched up so I was looking for something to replace it. I got an email from Overstock telling me that I had $10 credit so I went to look and see what they had. The protectors I got had a very good rating and I have to agree, these are the best I've had on my phone so far. They are very smooth and clear, good stiffness and thickness on the plastic so I think they'll hold up well. Best of all, only $5 for 2 of them, you really can't beat that price. I don't know if you really need a protector but I'm ultra paranoid and I just like the security of knowing it's on there.

I use one for sure but it does take away from viewing. Pretty scratched up now so I will probably replace. Not looking forward to installing and trying to get dust free, I am very picky so it takes me much time to get it right.

I did buy the Zagg Invisishield, however I never installed it. I just couldn't get it right and ended up making the screen protector look like crap.
Needless to say, after 9 months of having no "shield" I did finally get a small scratch. This is after bouncing my phone off of pavement, blacktop, hardwood floors, and carpet. The scratch is unnoticeable unless you're at the right viewing angle, and you can't feel it unless you actually search for it with your finger nail. My phone does have 2 cracks (Power button & volume down rocker) and the corners are pretty chipped.
Gotta love that Gorilla Glass.

I'm pretty picky as well. I had a couple chunks of dust under mine after installing it last night and I just used a piece of tape to lift a corner and another to get the dust out, worked great. Installation with the protectors I linked above took about 15min.

The EVO doesn't have Gorilla Glass

wow that pretty good i might get one if you can get as many as you want only have to pay the shipping thanks. I have one on now but it is peeling at the corners and there are so many air bubbles i hate it i am going to go bare or buy one of these

ya it does i think. pretty sure because it is very durable

I use the anti glare ones, they sort of distort a little, but my fingers glide across the screen so much easier

I got some on Amazon for 50 cents a piece. (6 pack for $3) They are the crystal clear ones, so you can't really even tell it's there. At that price, I will definitely use them. I wouldn't pay the insane prices that Zagg or some of the others charge though.

I hate the screen for some reason. Zagg is sso much better for me

Ya....the evo doesn't have gorilla glass buddy...

Phantom skinz feels and looks like its not even there. However, the screen guard itself does get scratched.

I use the SGP STEINHEIL Anti Fingerprint ... best thing ever

Zagg screen protector

Has anyone tried the zagg screen protector for the vibrant? I watched few scratch videos and it looks like it is very durable. What I didn't like is the part where you have to apply it wet. Has anyone tried them on vibrant or any other phone?

Mine shipped on Friday, I'll let you know as soon as I receive it and install it on the screen ... I got the easy kit, full application only to realize that I really only care about the screen ... the back is anyway cheap plastic and the phone already comes with a backup back cover ... meh, spilled milk ...

I have changed over to the Realook and I couldn't be happier. Much more clear and much smoother.
I have the Zagg Invisible shield (screen only).. I will say it works as advertised as far as protection....
my disappointment is that my screen no longer feels like glass... its harder to use Swype because the screen is kinda rubbery and ur finger(s) dont slide as easily.
ALSO can't swear it's the reason... but trying to (for example) move the cursor when ur texting.. like trying to go back and add a ".... the precision is off... i have to try several times to get the cursor in the right place (makes me miss having a trackball).. I dont recall if this problem existed before i got the shield.
Damn, I wish I had read reviews like these before I dropped closed to thirty bucks on this crap. The protector needs to "cure" but already I can see a couple small (1cm and 2cm) straight vertical lines that at first looked like cracks (I had to throw away that pair of underwear). "Fortunately" I read the recent posts to this thread and found out it's not a problem with the screen. I thought perhaps all the squeegeeing messed it up.
The positive: it protects the screen from accidental scratches and acts like a oleophobic coating that should resist oily fingerprints (I don't know about you but I need that, bad).
The negative: the screen is no longer smooth to the touch so gestures are a little buffered but more consistent (without the shield, it would be best when the screen was clean but it would get jerky when the oil built up); the crisp picture is a little dull.
I don't think the hassle is worth it but I bet when you get that first scratch you'll wish you had the shield on. The grass is always greener on the other side.
Last but not least, at $30 for a piece of plastic, Zagg really needs to deliver perfection. This is just shameful.
If you like the Zagg, you might try www.bestskinsever.com since they're basically the same exact thing, just half the cost. I had them on my G1 and liked it. They're presently working on a Vibrant skin.

Just request a full refund. They should honor their money back guarantee as long as you're still within the time period.
Just received mine and really am not disappointed with the product it is a little less glass like but is not hard to use swype, clarity seems the same and screen response is about the same I could tell a little drag with the screen nothing crazy,i will say onr thing that confuses me is the back cover does not even cover the edges which is very word to me considering that's the most likely part it will land on. I'd give it an overall 7 out of 10. For the price there are better alternatives but it willdo the job. As far as the vertical line problem I cannot comment on that as mine did not have that problem.

I took it off ... got tired of looking at the wavy pattern of the plastic and the two "imperfections" on the shield ... I'd rather look at scratches. Plus, trying to swype only to fall short of the letter I was aiming for got old quick (the skin loses momentum from the extra resistance that the membrane introduces).
Anyone who claims their screen looks roughly the same after the Zagg Shield treatment is smoking something that he/she should share with the rest of us.
I also contacted Zagg regarding a refund ... let's see how that goes.

Go get the Realook and you'll be very pleased. Search Realook Vibrant on Ebay and get it from the seller "realook". Shipping is free and super fast (I got mine in two days and other have reported next day delivery).

Thank you sir! I will check it out.
BTW, folks, if one searches for Samsung Galaxy Gorilla, one finds many references to the Galaxy S phones having a Gorilla screen that is scratch-resistant (which is an understatement for the kind of abuse they can withstand). Sounds to me like many of us wasted time and money to protect something that didn't really need the protection. Just my two cents (albeit very, very late).
Good luck to all with their screen protection strategy.
Ghost Armor...
Ghost Armor...look into it! thinner than invisible shield so it's more responsive and doesn't get that orange peel...same lifetime guarantee, overall better product!
Well I got my 2 zagg screens, applied first 2 nasty vertical lines on the screen. removed it next day. Applied second thought what are the chances in getting two defective screens... same thing but this time only 1 line. Keeping this one on until my realook arrives.
Love my screen. Invisi sheild ftw

I thought I'd input my 2 cents on this topic:
I got this directly from the manager of the 3M distribution facility for my area...
3M owns the patent for this kind of protection film.
Clearbra, Zagg, BestSkinsEver, basically anyone saying their product was designed for military use (on helicopter blades), they are all getting their materials from 3M. The only difference between vendors is the measurements they take, and ultimately the template they use for the application.
It sounds like Realook is a different material since it doesn't have that same rubbery feel to it, so they are probably not getting their stuff from 3M.

Having had both on my Vibrant I can tell you that they are definitely different material. The Zagg is flimsy rubber feeling material that requires water to install, the Realook is a harder plastic feeling material that appears to cling to the screen as it touches it.
After having both on the phone I can say without a doubt that the Realook is the superior product. It goes on easier, it's transparent, and it feels like the original glass.
Side note... I showed a buddy my phone the other day and he was playing around with it for a few minutes watching Avatar and playing a game. As he handed it back to me he said "you going to put a screen protector on there?" I said "It already has one". He looked again and he still couldn't tell that it was there, even after I told him.
Realook for the win!

I hate screen protectors!

I tried to use them, I really did. The first one was a zagg and it wasn't a very good experience. The screen was rubbery and got scratched up within 2 weeks. So I removed it and just left my seidio case on for a few months. No scratches at all. Now I just got an otterbox impact case and came w/ a nicer screen protector. I put it on, but the lint underneath the screen was driving me crazy. I tried cleaning it off and made it even worst! Is anyone else just rockin it with just a case? I'm done w/ screen protectors.
I used my phone for months without a screen protector until the OB Defender(waste) came out.
I do agree with you that the lint and dust is utterly frustrating. you almost need a clean-room with a surgeon to get the damn thing on right. I can't remember who suggested it, but they said if you take your phone into the bathroom after a good, hot shower, the moisture in the air will keep dust from floating around and you'll get a real clean protector.
i will tell you this, like i said, i rocked my phone for months without any protection. then one day i slid it into the same pocket as my car keys and received a nice long scratch along the length of the phone.
I use the otterbox one and I love it. You really can't tell that there is even a screen protector on the phone. You just gotta be very careful when you put it on. I have gotten really good at it, mine is perfect- not a bubble, spec of dust, scratch, etc...
Screen protectors can be a pain in the ass, but with just a LITTLE bit of time, they can be awesome. First off, i use and swear by steinheil screen protectors. They feel exactly like the glass on the phone and not one person including myself has been able to tell the difference between an evo with it on and no screen protector. Second off, its the method of application that makes or breaks screen protectors. The single best way to apply one is in the bathroom. Turn on the shower and let the bathroom get foggy. This drops all the dusk in the air so you have a nice clean environment to work in. also use a good/new lint free cloth to clean while in the bathroom. use a little patience to get it lined up and start on the bottom and slowly move up using the included tool or a credit card. smooth out any remaining tiny bubbles and your in heaven my friend.
Wish I posted here first before applying the screen protector. I'll just have to baby it for now.
If you are going to use one of the ones made with the military grade polymer, bodyguardz is one of the better ones. It doesn't have the orange peel feel to it and they have a dry apply version.
I use steinheil too. The shower method is a little excessive tho. Just get a couple pieces of tape and dab around the whole screen to remove as much lint as you can, apply the protector and if there is still lint under use a strip of tape to life the protector and another piece to remove the lint.

Just FYI, I found a screen protector that I swear buy. It feels like glass, like the original screen. I dont know how scratch resistant it is but after a few months I'm still scratch free. Also I put one on my wifes phone. They come in a three pack off Amazon for $7 and some change shipped. It's worth giving a shot. I like Zagg InvisibleShield on my EVO. I had to order a replacement since I messed mine up with attempting to put on the front of a DecalGirl skin (pain in the butt).
I know I would have a hard time doing it myself so I had Best Buy install the last one and probably do my replacement. Yeah, they charge $8 but both times on my EVO and on my father's new android upgrade were perfect. No air bubbles, no trapped dust, dirt, and grim under the screen protector.
Check my Signature for a great option for screen protectors. They used to only have one type, now you can get a whole lot of options. I love them! I used the shower method too, and it worked great for me. Still on my first one - 4 months and counting.

Are there scratches on ur screen protector? That's the other thing that drives me crazy.
I personally have to have a screen protector mainly due to my job . I work in the service department of a heavy equippment dealership . Besides being around dust and dirt and parts being ground down there is no telling what my fingers will pick up . I went with no protector at first and thats when I got my first two scratches . Had the invisible shield installed and scratches got covered up . Point of the story is , depending on your field of work and what you are exposing the phone to pretty much determines how well your screen is gonna remain scratch free . One thing that does irritate me to some extent . I had a Blackberry Storm that remained scratch free and never had a screen protector on it .

Going to give my vote to the Steinheil too. First off, I started out with a Zagg but could not stand the rubbery feel. In addition, I also use my EVO as a music player when I work out (I have an armband case that has a plastic cover on it) and every time I pulled the EVO out of the case after the workout, it would pull the Zagg cover off. PAIN IN THE *SS! I got so tired of it happening, the last time I just crumpled up the Zagg and tossed it in the trash. At that point, I was ready to go with a NAKED screen but had to remind myself that I was on my second EVO. The screen on my first got scratched 3 days after I brought it home (Don't even know how... with a 20-month old running around at home, could have been anything).
Now, going back to the Steinheil - I read reviews of it on Amazon and everyone raved. It was somewhat affordable so I thought, why not. After applying it, I have to say it's pretty awesome. Does it feel like glass? Not in my opinion - it feels "silky" but not SMOOTH like glass (does that make sense?) More importantly, it doesn't feel like rubber like the Zagg. And a fringe benefit, it does a great job of keeping off the fingerprints! And how about working out? I've used put in the armband case now 4X and it hasn't come off once. With the Zagg, I've had to reapply it 4 times!
So, my vote is for the Steinheil too... (BTW, they give you two in a case so you can try and find someone to split the costs with you if cost is an issue).
Boxwave screen protectors are the way to go. The crystal ones are awesome

I buy the cheap ones from China on ebay and they seem to work fine. I usually just buy them in bulk for like $10 and stash them. I replace them every couple of months once they get scratched. I swear by the shower method in the bathroom, always have a clean application.
I initially had a zagg screen protector but it was GARBAGE. I ripped it off after 2 days of having it. I ended up getting a privacy screen protector off eBay for $3.00 and have had it since. I do miss the crisp clarity of the Evo screen but it has proved useful and has worked much better than that zagg crap.
I got a Zagg as soon as I got my Evo. I had used them on other devices (G1, my brief stint with an iphone, my Moment). Some people don't like the orange peel effect, and say it feels tacky, but it doesn't bother me (I don't even notice the orange peel effect). I have had it since August of last year, since the Evo was so hard to come by for the longest time lol. I have no scratches, and no bubbles. No peeling of the sides, except one when I put my Seidio case on initially, but it smoothed back out. I had Best Buy install it for me this go around, and I couldn't be happier. I have had it like I said, since August, with heavy use, and it stays in my pocket. It still looks as good as the day I got it

Took screen protector off

Anyone else a daring and adventurous guy like me, living the dangerous life with no screen protector.
But still sport the pocket protector to keep the nerd alive jk.
Just got sick of my screen always being covered up, I did have a good one from Otterbox, it was very clear, and went on near perfectly with no bubbles, but when gets greasy hard to clean off, it seems to attract grease almost. Now with the naked screen, it doesn't seem to get nearly as greasy at all, and the image of the screen with no protector is even sharper and clearer. Look out "Retina Display" I am looking at you.
I know I may scratch the screen somehow, but not too worried. Anyone else take it off and like going naked ? Hey now !!!
my friend had his Evo for months without a screen protector and he never scratched it until he put the oem htc protector on it. it did look very nice compared to mine (with the protector on)...but i KNOW i will scratch mine so mine stays on!
i tried it haha i went out golfing with it in my pocket and i guess there was a lot of pressure on my pocket on my downswing and it put a big crack on my screen

I have been running mine with no screen protector since day1. No scratches at all. I don't abuse it or anything but I'm also not extremely careful. I personally just couldnt stand the rubbery feel and the degraded image. As a side note I actually apply some carnuba wax (very carefully) every couple of weeks and it helps a lot with the grease etc. Even makes it ultra slippery.

good idea with the wax... gonna try it myself, haven't used a screen protector since July and my screen is like new
Running it nude here too, had a TINY thin scratch under 1cm long from my keyes. Luckily the screen kept getting dust under it so sprint replaced the glass for free.

I like my screen protector from Otterbox. I'm not brave enough to go naked at this point. I'll wait until I've owned the phone a year and I'm closer to the replacement. Of course, I do pay for the insurance... Hmm. Perhaps I should ponder this more.
I don't use screen protectors because they don't feel right when it comes to touch, and they degrade the picture quality. Not only that, but glass is harder than virtually all metals so the chance of it getting scratched are pretty low. The only thing you really have to worry about is sand, but if your phone won't ever be exposed to sand then there's nothing to worry about.
IMO screen protectors are obsolete for capacitive touch screens. For the older plastic screens that were used for resistive touch screens though, it made more sense.

Same here...I hate protectors/cases...have you ever rocked a case and protector, and then every once in a while took it all off to clean it up? Remember that feeling you had looking at it all cleaned up and in its true size right before you put all of that **** back on??! It looks a million times better! Why cover it back up??!! I've had mine naked since release date and for the exception of a few hair line scratches on my camera lens (no effect whatsoever on the quality of pics/vids), its still perfect!
I fumbled mine over this weird ornimental bronze ashtray and dinged up my otterbox screen protector in about ten places. I thought for sure the phone was done while it bounced across the ashtray, but the protector took all the punishment. They immediately sent out a complete replacement case (regardless of me telling them what I did and asking where I can buy just the screeny, awesome customer service). So I had the damaged protector removed for the three days I waited for shipping... and there is NO WAY I'm putting another protector on, this glass feels awesome, doesnt collect finger funk or microscopic finger scuffs. More responsive, image is sharp, the phone just feels slicker and faster. I still have the commuter case on the body at work but at home I gotta strip it down completely and revel in the sexiness of this phone. I'm done caring what happens to the phone now, just like the rest it will look like an old turd in two years and I'll be sporting something new anyway.
I'm starting to feel the same way... I've gone caseless the past two days. Maybe I'll take the screen protector off today.

I like my screen protector from Otterbox. I'm not brave enough to go naked at this point. I'll wait until I've owned the phone a year and I'm closer to the replacement. Of course, I do pay for the insurance... Hmm. Perhaps I should ponder this more.

i also like their screen protector, not much friction when sliding around finger
Currently naked and oh does she feel amazing lol
No case or screen protector and I sport it in my left front pants pocket all the time.
I had a nice slimmer case by sedio I think and then the corner clips broke so it was coming apart. Ordered a Otterbox case and was like omg... I could throw this thing like a baseball and I bet it could take the beating. Had the Otterbox on for a few weeks then I got tired of that oil slick effect under the screen protector and once it was naked there was no putting the clothes back on!
I am a little upset though, since taking it out of the case there are now 3 small pieces or dirt under the screen and its only been out of a case for maybe a week. The Evo I have is a replacement since my mic stop working on my original phone. It does have that screen separation issue.
I haven't used a screen protector since Day 1, which, for me, was back in early November 2010. I still don't have any scratches on my screen and agree with the op's sentiments that some screen protectors dilute the quality of the display.
I'm very careful to never place my EVO in my pocket with anything other than my Bluetooth headset. No spare change, no car keys, et cetera. I've also found that some relatively inexpensive microfiber cleaning clothes from Target are spectacular at removing fingerprints and grime from the screen when it does become dirty.

I had a HTC Hero for about 1.5 years, completely naked since day 1. When I got rid of it, I only had a couple of small, barely noticeable scratches. It wasn't babied at all and it was dropped a few times. The only thing I used to clean that screen was whatever jean or shorts I had on.
Now if I can only get past being paranoid with the EVO ; there's nothing better than rockin' a naked phone.
I stopped using my case a few weeks ago, and haven't had any issues. Yesterday, I picked my wife up from the salon. While we were driving home, I had her answer a text for me. When we got home, she forgot it was in her lap, and just got out of the car. It hit the concrete right on the corner on the backside and scratched all the way down to the red. She got very upset about it, so I pretended it was no big deal...but DAMMIT! It was friggin MINT before that!
A month ago I peeled off the Zagg protector Best Buy put on when I bought it back in October. Not going back. Looks better, feels better.
Ahhhhhhh, freballin'
I went back to a screen protector already
Was at WorstBuy, looking at misc stuff, and this hot chick was pimping the Zagg bullet proof screen protector, well a few shake of her boobs in front of me, and I was sold. I am sucker.
Actually I LOVE this screen, has a weird sticky feel to it, very good traction on the finger, and even better doesn't seem to attract any grease, I like this much more than the clear Otterbox protector.
Combine this with the best case for the EVO, the Case-Mate "Tough" and this phone is ready for 2012.

Zagg InvisibleShield for EVO

So I bought the InvisibleShield for my EVO (I'm guessing about a month and a half ago) and it get's realllllyyyyyy dirty looking with usage. I'm also not too fond of the way sliding my fingers over the screen feels, I think it's taking away from the touch screen experience of the phone? Is there any way to clean it so that it looks like a regular screen again and not some clouded screen protector? I almost want to take it off but I paid 15 bucks for it and that would go down the drain
They will get brownish over time man. I thought zagg was the bees knees but they're really not. I ended up going through 2 of them both full body shields I spend about 27 bucks a piece on lol. First one I peeled off because I got anoyed just like you are, second one I pulled because the touchscreen just wasn't smooth anymore. What a waste of money right? I don't like that the zagg makes the screen less responsive so I've learned to rock a naked screen. No case no protection just bare naked phone. But you're correct I definitely agree on it making screen less responsive. There is no way to clean it or at least I don't think so. I will never use one again.

Just get rid of it. I've rocked my evo sans screen protector for since December and I've not no scratches on it.
I bought one and returned it the same day after install it. I thought it was crap. It made the screen feel rubbery.
I just have a Seidio case on it and that's it. Not a single scratch since release day.
Yeah I feel like I'm going to have to ditch it here pretty soon. I thought this protector was the best. It may be the best at protecting the screen but it ruins the experience of the phone.

I know I said I would never buy again; well I bought 1 2 weeks ago for my MacBook pro (80 bucks full body) and its already black/brown. I definitely will never buy zagg again lol. The evos screen is coated so it wont scratch just sitting in your pocket. It will take alot to scratch it. Naked screen is the best.

I have thought about taking mine off....only have screen but I am just too paranoid about the screen
Well I bought my evo 2 days after it came out, and up until 2 months ago, I never used a screen protector and the screen never had one scratch on it (and I kept it in my pocket with nothing else in the pocket.) My original screen suffered from the "B" spot and I eventually got a Sprint repair store to replace it for me (after trying 2 other Sprint repair stores.) Since I received a brand new screen from HTC I wanted to make sure it was protected, but judging by what others are saying now, it seems like I don't even need a screen protector.

sounds like you got some greasy @$$ hands. stop eating chicken and such.
EDIT:: I have had a screen protector on my phone for 335 days. The first one I had ended up folding up in a corner due to my own behavior, and I got one the same day bc of how clean my phone looked when I took the original invisible shield off. (i showed no mercy on my phone, it has been dropped, put in back pocket and sat on, put in the same pockey as keys/needles (j/k), and even tested the effectivness of it on the old protector (keys to the screen like a b!t(h)
It's not turning brown or anything, its just blurry and it gets dirt sports on it and then I have to rub really hard to get them out, it just looks dirty overall, like spots all over it. And on a white screen you can see all the streaks from where I slide my finger to unlock it, scroll, etc.
I had a Zagg also but didn't like it for the same reasons as you. I now use an HTC screen protector I got at Radio Shack. Its a little pricey but its still in almost new condition and I do dusty construction work for a living. ( I use it in conjunction with a seidio ext. rugged).

I just did the same thing with my xoom. I had the thing on there for less than 24 hours, just couldn't stand it
Zagg shields are tough as **** but they take too much away from the experience of using the device. And now that OEMs are making screens out of magic scratch proof glass the shields are unnecessary, imo.
I actually took mine off and the screen feels wonderful....just hope I don't scratch it...even if I do I have a backup and insurance I guess
All of those type of protectors will feel different than the screen. The best one I have used was the bodyguardz. It didn't have the orange peel feel to it. And they have them in dry apply now so no more liquid on your phone.

Ghost armor has been pretty good actually. It's smooth and all. The fingerprints don't come off as easy as when I has no protector. It also scratches easy (but they go away). I had a couple of small scratches here and there on my screen, it filled them in, can't see any of them. The shield is getting kind of gunky around the edges though.
Kind of a toss up...I think I like the idea of applying a Ghost Shield after you've dinged up your screen from mishandling it in your pocket for 5-6 months. Makes it look cleaner, and doesn't feel too bad IMHO.

Screen Protector or No Screen Protector?

I got my GNex the day of release and since day one I have had a screen protector on it.
I used the cheap Verizon ones temporarily, and purchased an invisible shield about a week later.
I really like the invisible shield, its lasted me this whole time. From December to April with no issues. It was clean looking. It did have a little bit of the "orange peel" effect, but I didn't mind it.
But its starting to get a little bit worn, dirt starting collecting around the edges of the screen protector, and won't come out. Its also got little fine surface scratches from me cleaning the screen......
So my question is, who here is using their GNex Naked?
Im thinking about taking my invisible shield off now,
But im just worried that the glossy black front of the phone will start to get little fine surface scratches from pocketing/cleaning.
I know that the screens are not suppose to scratch easily, but its the little fine hair like scratches that appear over time from use / cleaning that bother me to no end.
Anyone using their GNex Naked care to chime in on how well the screen is holding up? How about the glossy black above and underneath the screen?

Honestly, wouldn't risk it.
When you have that tiny grain of sand or something in your pocket and your phone is with it. That is just enough to scratch it and just make you OCD and annoyed with the screen because of that one scratch you always see.
Just put on a quality screen protector. I put an XO skins on mine and it's been good so far.
I used it from half of January until now. Collected my fist scratch a week ago, even though I treat it with extreme care. It is not very visible but still. I would recommend one.

I would use a screen protector just to not take the risk of the screen getting scratched. Because if those tiny little scratches bother you, imagine what'll happen when you get a big scratch on your screen. You'll regret it. I, and many others here would recommend XO Skin's. It's a really good screen protector and I'd say give it a chance.

I've never put my phone into trouser pockets. It always goes into a suit jacket pocket on its own - without any other items in the pocket. Despite this, I have a curved scratch on the screen that becomes noticeable in bright environments.
So, if a scratch will bother you greatly, you'll definitely want a screen protector.
I put protectors on all my phone's screens before use them. On my old iphone 3gs one from power support saved my glass from a 1.5 meters fall, protector broken but screen untouched.
Ran mine about a week without one until my case and protector came in...was extremely careful and no scratches thankfully.
It's like having a home alarm system. No one gets them until their house has already been broken into. For how cheap they are...it's cheap insurance since it's much harder to repair a scratch than replace a screen protector.
if small scratches that can only be seen when the screen is off and clean bothers you then use a screen protector. The galaxy nexus's Oleophobic coating will get these tiny scratches without one. the screen feels much nicer without one, try it for a day when you plan to switch up the screen protectors and you will see what you are missing out on.
I peel mine off. Was too slippery, got easily scratched with microscratches, looked greasy. Bleh. The screen is great and durable, has that nice oleophobic coating; the glass is strong enough, a protector isn't needed anymore on phones for regular, they're not plastic screens.
Now if you work in construction or other particle heaven environment, by all means get a protector.
Mines naked and I have zero scratches from slipping it in and out of my pocket! And trust me...I clean the screen and look under a light to check! Lol

Picked up 10 good protectors from ebay for like 5 quid.
Get greasy, wipe on your trousers, get scratched, put a new one on.
Cheaper than new glass, simple

I'm actually looking for a very basic, as-clear-as-possible, and non-water base screen protector. I hear the basic ones from Verizon do just fine (not anti-glare ones)? I may go with those.
What exactly are you protecting the screen from? From looking bad? If isn't for resale value, then what on Earth justifies tainting the display of a phone's screen with a piece of plastic that worsens the clarity and collects dust, fingerprints and oil?
I'd spend the money on addressing the OCD. Just get the first scratch out of the way and be done with it. It's pretty liberating to not walk around as if you are babysitting fine china in your pocket.
I highly recommend Steinhall Oleophobic screen protectors.
With a good install, it is hard to even tell its in there. Very clear, and the feel of it is better than any others I've used. Almost as good as glass.

Completely clear, couldn't notice there was one on, some rainbow effect not much, Covered pretty much the whole screen. The only slight issue was that the bottom right corner did not adhere so it was off about 1mm. .
Currently I have the XO on there still waiting for 2 bubbles to dry out, almost no orange peel, but I can tell it has effected the visibility a bit. Overall pretty happy.

no screen protector here and i've been using this phone for 2 months without a scratch. It's always all by himself in my left pocket and I dont feel worried about getting a scratch.
If you want a screen protector and you'd feel better with one I suggest you the Tru brand, the feeling is really nice compared to the other brands out there that I see at my workplace...
I'm the complete opposite of you. I purchased my nexus the week it came out and refused to put a screen protector on up until 2weeks ago. Was talked into trying one by a coworker. In those 3.5 months I've never had a single scratch. I'm a little OCD about having a perfect screen. Free of scratches and clean of fingerprints and dirt. I ended up throwing on a cheap verizon one thinking I'd be pulling it off very shortly after applying it. After putting it on damn near perfect, I started to like it. Color distortion was farely minimal and I wasn't wiping fingerprints every 20 minutes. That in itself is worth the screen protector. The protection to me is the added bonus..... I really hate fingerprints. Lol
