[Q] Phone Freezing Over Night - Wildfire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Apologies if this has been posted before, I did look but couldn't seem to find the exact same issue.
I've had my phone for just under a year, no real problems. But late last month it restarted over night and since then it started freezing every night when I left it charging. At first I thought it was crashing but the charge light would still be on but all buttons would be unresponsive. The only thing I could do to regain control of my phone was to remove the battery.
I contacted HTC who suggested factory reset...which I don't really want to do. As my phone was only freezing once a day (over night) it wasn't all that bad. To be honest I thought it was an issue with it charging.
For reasons I can't remember, I removed an app that I never used; it was using 2mb space and couldn't be put on the SD. Once removed, the freezing stopped happening and there was much rejoicing...until last night.
I decided to download another app and the freezing happened again over night. I've since removed that app but here's the rub, why is this happening?
The fact it's happening whenever I download more apps to my phone seems to point to a memory issue but my phone has 1.6GB on the SD and 53mb on the phone itself.
I still haven't tried a factory reset and as I've had it less than a year, HTC said I can return it; but there's no guarantee this will fix it and I like my little phone, so if there's a way I can resolve this issue I'll rather do that before trying more drastic measures.
I hope someone can help.

Are you rooted? If that's the case, and, you are charging the phone when it is switched off, what you are experiencing is a known bug.
Also, although unrelated, it is really not recommended to charge your battery overnight or for extended periods. Charge only till it is full.

Nope, not rooted. Just a plain, bog-standard out the box Wildfire.
Thanks for the heads up regarding the charging though Since I bought it (July last year) I had been charging over night on most days but I'll switch to just charging it for a few hours till it's full now.
I guess in case it'll help I'll give a little more info: While charging I leave my phone switched on and I rarely restart my phone unless it drops signal. Only recently with the freezing have I had issues with using it and had to restart it frequently. I'm not a techie person so I've not played around with the phone other than putting on apps, where possible I put them onto SD. My phone is unlocked and I use it on the O2 network.

make a factory reset bro. it tells u whether the issue is with hardware or software. kept under charging mode just heats up the phone by a little level. this dont normally freeze the phone.
but if u r downloading something with data connection, or bluetooth, or wifi and kept charging overnight, then the battery gets overheated heavily which freezes the phone. it is quite normal and is experienced by people who keep overnight downloads.
and further there may be application conflicts in ur phone, which make it slow and freeze. i expect this is the issue with u.
if u r sure that u r not using any data connections, then i suggest u to factory reset ur phone. before that backup all the data. i dont understand what makes u from not doing the factory reset.

Over night my phone is idle while charging. Though I have data enabled (no wifi at home), it's not downloading anything and I have auto sync switched off.
I would have thought if this was an application issue it would have started after installing this dodgy app and also continue until I unistalled. This hasn't been the case. When it started happening I hadn't installed anything other than updates for weeks or maybe months. During the week while it was having this issue, I had installed 1 app (Photoshop).
It has only frozen once during the day, right after work; that was the time I finally thought I'll have to factory reset. So I was writing down all my apps in a notepad so I knew what I had and where they were (I'm fussy with my screen setup). I decided to remove 2 apps I never used (8Pen and Photoshop), I thought I'll leave it 1 night just in case and that night though it never froze, so I didn't reset.
Since then it's been working fine for 3 weeks till last night when I downloaded another app. So it seems random, it's not associated with a particular app and comes and goes.
The reason I'm cautious about factory resetting is that it deletes everything. Though I have backed contacts up to MyLookOut and to my SD card, I'll still loose my apps and data and so I'm not keen on doing it. Not using wifi means it's heafty on my 500mb data package to redownload them again and then I'm unsure if i'll have to upgrade to Froyo again.
End of the day it just seems like a "Turn it off and on again" answer and as it comes and goes and doesn't seem to have a reason why it happens so randomly I don't want to factory reset if there's another way.

u r worrying about loosing data on factory reset. but do u know that u can backup each and everything on the phone including the apps downloaded from market.
ok, i will try to give a software solution. first uninstall all the file managers and app managers in your phone. then go to market and download "ANDROID ASSISTANT". this little app has many features. explore it and u will know its potential. it has a nice option called QUICK BOOST. when u press this quick boost on a heavily stuck phone, u will feel like ur phone got a new life. it makes the phone response faster in seconds.
and further it has auto boost option, which can be set to a minimum of 10minutes. this auto boost will help u in preventing the freeze issue. hope it works. the present version of android assistant is 2.3.3
trying to attach u that one

Many thanks.
How do you backup apps? I know they'll appear in the download list but I'll rather not have to redownload them all, plus I have a few not from the marketplace. I've read that during a factory reset even apps which are apparently "saved" on the SD card are removed because they're not 100% saved onto it. So if you know of a way to back them up I would be most grateful.
Thanks for the Android Assistant.apk too, I'll be sure to look into that! Though I always thought anything that force closed apps wasn't always good - I previously used Task Killer and removed it after being told it could be the route of a force close email app issue I was getting.
Edit: Just got back home and during the journey my phone had frozen!! I had hoped it was a space issue but I've not downloaded any new apps and have even removed some during the day. So my previous thought that this was some how connected to storage on my phone must be wrong. So what on Earth can it be? It's not constant, in fact, like I said I've had this phone for 9 months give or take and it's been fine. So why now and why only sometimes does it freeze?

yes freezing also happens when there is very low phone free memory. when ur apps get filled in phone and keep on decreasing its memory, it is more likely that ur phone gets freezed. its always better to keep a 30MB free phone memory. remember data and cache also use phone memory, so the free memory will be generally unpredictable with minor errors. have u got any idea of a windows pc freezing. a windows pc freezes if there is some errors in registry. that is the reason why i have suggested u to make factory reset first to eliminate the software issues.
u asked me a solution to backup ur apps, right.
firstly i wanna introduce u about the backing up of applications.
android applications will be in the .apk file format and u know this. this .apk file is an installable archive just like .exe of windows OS. opening the .apk files from a file manager installs the program files of that application. but when u download the applications from android market, u will not get the .apk files. the android market installs the program files directly. but we can still create an .apk file from these program files and app managers will do that function. both the files im attaching u below will do that function.
here im attaching u two applications (.apk files)
one is APP CONTROL. i recommend u to use this. it can be used with android assistant installed. both of them work fine. the APP CONTROL version i gave u is an older version and is a full version. A newer version of APP CONTROL is available in the android market, but it is not free. so i strongly recommend u to use this. it has a great feature to backup all ur apps at a single click. the apps backed up by it will be saved as .apk files under the path
MEMORY CARD/backups/apps
i recommend u to back up all ur phone and mem card apps at a time with a single click. explore this APP CONTROL.
i dont want to give a detailed explanation of the other file ANDROID APP MANAGER, because i wont recommend u to use this. im just attaching u this because of only one reason, that APP CONTROL is presently not a full version. using of it is entirely at your personal intrest.

I took your advice and did a factory reset - backed everything up so it wasn't as painful as I first thought it would be. Managed to reinstall everything and so far so good (touch wood) but the original issue was sporadic and so only time will tell.
I have noticed since the reset that my phone memory, which was 50mb before, is now 100mb. So hopefully this will mean that I'm not forced to limit what I download.
Such a shame the Wildfire doesn't have more memory
Thanks again for the help and I'll post if the issue occurs again.

that 50 MB and 100 MB may be due to app memory + cache memory. if u have interrupted the download android apps from market, and have every downloading app partly downloaded and interrupted. then that partly downloaded apps go to the cache memory of MARKET application. u can try and check this.
similarly there will be cache memory for every application. i expect all those cache memories got built up and ate 50 MB of ur phone memory. if it is so, it says that how vigourously u have used ur phone regarding applications.
these cache memories wont get cleaned just on restrating phone, and u should manually clean them either through the phones inbuilt process or through the applications having keywords of cache cleaner.
there is somewhat that i dont like in android apps. which is the application doing extra functions other than its name. now a days, u can see many file managers in android market. and those file managers suppose to have the fuction of explorer of android file system. but they will have additional features like combined app manager, cache cleaner, uninstaller, installer.
this makes the different applications conflict with each other and slow down the os. thats the thing i hate here. i have to choose priority in apps, and sometimes need to avoid nice apps due to that reason.

Well, my phone has just froze again Sent an email to HTC (already had an email chain going with them so I just updated my ticket) and asked them what to try next.
On the plus side at least they won't keep telling me to factory reset!

HOPE U HAVE ELIMINATED THE SOFTWARE ISSUE
OK. hope the phone froze without even single app being installed.
suppose if the freeze was a software issue, then u have backed up the app causing freeze. let us think this like a virus. if u had reinstalled that app again, ur phone is likely to freeze again.
i haven't heard of virusses if android os, but i have seen many antivirus programs for android. even the great kaspersky recently added its support for android. the existance of antivirus programs proove the existance of virusses.
so, try to remember if u have installed any backed up app frm mem card.
Im personally guessing that ur phone freeze was not a software issue. ur phone might be having hardware issues.
giving to a service centre might solve the problem, but im not pretty sure. and moreover, if they update ur phone to froyo, u cant even root. (i dont remember what ur phone is on now). and even u cant make those service centre guys see ur problem, as u dont know when it freezes. i expect, what all they are gonna do to ur phone is factory reset, or reinstall the os.

Internal Storage Folder DISAPPEARS

The internal Storage Folder & Contents Routinely disappears on my PDA2K. The only way to restore the folder is by doing a hard reset. After doing so, the contents of the storage folder re-appear as well.
Any ideas??
to my it happened to me several weeks ago the same thing...
And several times it has already spent...
but still nobody has told me anything
That you program you had installed in the Storage...
regards
Okay, this has happened to me 4 times now in 1 weekend. Does anyone know what is going on here?
I hate this reset, sprite, use for a bit, gone again, etc business.
Driving me nuts.
Someone please help.
Well, when the battery gets lower, it shuts down the SDIO slot. Could that be it?

No we are not talking about the SDIO Memory. I am talking about the internal storage. It just goes away until you hard reset.
Well I figured out what was causing it, but I still don't know why. I installed the newest version of WebIS Mail 2.1, and when retrieving mail, it pauses, after that the storage is gone, then it's good old hard reset and sprite to the rescue. Funny thing is nothing is deleted and after a sprite restore it goes back to normal. But the story continues the next time I try and retrieve mail.
So what I did was store the mail folder on my SDIO (yes it is brutaly slow), and now it works fine.
Any thoughts?
Registry
Can you please take a look at your registry?
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Loader]
Does it read : \Release\\Storage\Windows ?
If it does not maybe you would like to try importing the attached key.
Just a note here, that should read,
Does it read : \Release\\Storage\Windows\ ?
and not
Does it read : \Release\\Storage\Windows ?
I believe.
Sounds to me as if you mail program is over writing your storage, trying to store too much info their. This is normal behavior with this type of storage.

Is there anyway to enable it again??
I'm not thinking when the battery is low, I'm thinking to try and re enable SDIO Slot when Windows cant see the SDIO card.
It's the funniest thing, i often loose the SD card in windows, but somehow when i'm running TomTom 3.7 which is installed on the SD Card, it never fails once it's running even though i'm sometimes not able to access the SD Card with file explorer.
So somehow it's there for TomTom onces it's running, but not for Windows???
Woops. Looks like I can't read. Sorry.
This 'internal storage' disappearing issues also happened on my Xda IIs (HK WWE), now with 1.33 + 1.06, in the past few days as well.... SINCE I installed the following two programs.
1. O2 Plus 1.6 - cracked by someone with his/her signature on the 'About page'
2. Tweak2K2 3.4
I am pretty sure that's the hacked O2 Plus does that. Since I had my splash screens customized on my IIs initially and after installed O2 Plus 1.6, after a soft reset, the 2 splashed will revert to O2 splashes then after some time, 'internal storage' disappeared.
Restored the unit back to the stage that I had version 1.5-hacked, never had a problem since. However, right after uninstalled 1.5 & reinstalled 1.6, same disaster happened again. Tried 3 times in a roll, never missed. Dont think that's the problem with Tweak2K2. Not an expert on manually tweaking the registry, but that's what I found out. I am back to 1.5-hacked & Tweak2K2 3.4. And running without a problem. Did you guys put on the O2 Plus 1.6-hacked or had it on before?

Anyway, my first post on this incredible forum, really appreciate on everyone sharing thoughts and knowledge here.
AND to whoever wipe out wiki, 'grow up and remember what your mama taught you! I'm pretty sure we are both wrong. Because I am running 1.6 right now, and I've been running all day with no problems. I am also running Tweak2K2 3.4. My problem disappeared when I set the WebIS Mail 2.1 mail storage folder to a SDIO card instead of the internal storage.
Someone, please help with this. There is a bigger culprit here, and I don't think Cabrio or I have a proper conclusion.
But I will try uninstalling 1.6, reinstalling Mail 2.1 and try it again. I just hate all this installing and uninstalling bit.
Cheers!
I believe that the problem is due to some applications you might be using.
I am experiencing problems with files disappearing/getting corrupt on mu SD-Card, where I installed all my apps and just found out that at least part of the responsability was a certain program...
Fact is that some tools/apps are not properly tested and have bug's that can mess up the filesystem, plus you should not try to use hacked/cracked programs, as they might contain routines that cause this effects on purpose.
Cheers,
vma
Another approach
I don't think this is a rogue app.
I have had the same problem dating to the first synch I did this morning.
My files won't synch - they seem unable to complete the synch. Active synch won't "stop" in mid process - and when I remove the XDA from the cradle, it won't soft reset.
A hard reset maintains the contents of "My Documents" which is not what it's meant to do.
Having spent several hours on this, I am starting to suspect that the culprit is to do with the time change. The Calender can deal with it, contacts and notes can deal with it.
Files can't. And when it fails, it leaves the XDA unstable.
It's only my working theory. But three iPaq users in the same office had a similar issue and all had to hard reset and restore - which fixed their problem.
Users who don't synch with their local machine (i.e synch with exchange are fine). Users with earlier versions of Pocket PC are fine.
Hope this helps. I was expecting every iPaq user in the world to be up in arms - so maybe I'm wrong. Its where I'm looking now though.
Spoke too soon!
Okay, so I really have to learn to let things ride for a couple of days, before saying "No, mine is fine". Well and the story goes...
I woke up this morning, reached over to my trusty (ya right) XDA, and baam, it was just sitting there. Wouldn't do anything. I sat there, thought for a sec, thought about the last backup I had done, and off to the 2 button holy grail we go (power+reset). Restored, with sprite, uninstalled O2 Plus 1.6, and now I will sit and wait again, till tomorrow morning. I think I might have to buy this sprite backup program, it's saved my a$$ more than 6 times this week alone.
Okay, so back to the drawing board. My Plan is this.
All I need O2 Plus for is the auto msn sign in, everytime GPRS is enabled or a phone call is ended. Is there any way to do this without the O2 plus app?
I will not install O2 Plus again, I will leave everything alone as is and I am going to start uninstalling 1 app at a time.
BTW, PhoneDashboard also screwed up a few days ago, it would just sit there and process like mad. I uninstalled it and everything is fine now.
And though hacked software could have anti-piracy code inside it, but if the app has bugs why would I buy it? Fix the bugs, make it decent enough to be worth the price you are asking then I will gladly buy it. It's the same reason why I wouldn't buy Windows, I only have it cause it came free with my system
ok..got some more info about our problem..this doesnt fix our problem but i just thought you guys should know, after you hard reset theres 4 shortcuts in the startup folder they are for the permanent save contacts, tasts apointments, connections. you get that flash manager error cause the permanent save program cant save it cause that was suppose to be in the Storage Folder..and the Storage Folder wont allow you to add delete or view files in it..i know ther are files in there cause if you look in memory you'll see that its ocuping 40+mb, then after a while or until your xda hangs the Storage Folder disappears
How can we unlock/view this folder? just like the Extended_ROM folder unlocker, i bet when we unlock this folder before it disappears everything will be fixed (YEA RYT!!!). well at least one problem down..
i forgot to tell you guys after you Hard reset try deleting that 4 permanentsave shortcut..you'll feel your erge to kick the crap out of your IIs a little less.
yes I always do that. that and the STK.lnk
So I uninstalled O2 Plus 1.6, and been running since yesterday morning with no problems yet. Storage is still there and things are running normally. If this goes on for another day or two, I will be convinced that O2 Plus caused the problem.
what else did you do? mine always disapears after the first soft reset..
It just happened to me for the first time while listening to music with PocketMVP. Storage disappeared and had to do a hard reset. I'm glad I had Sprite and a current backup handy. I also had O2 Plus 1.6 installed just a few hours before this happened. So as you guys suggested, I uninstalled O2 Plus 1.6, removed the 5 permanentsave files and STK.
Before I installed O2 Plus, my PPC was very stable. I only had to reset when my memory was running low since I refuse to buy an SD Card fewer than 1gig. We will see what happens in a few days.
nomadman..could you upload your backup? or maybe could upload a Flush image of your current running OS?(http://en.pdamobiz.com/en/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=151 ) PLEASE help man..cause that myt fix my storage problem.

Issue with apps on SD after reboot

Hi all,
I have as strange issue in regards to apps on the SD card. I'm rooted, S-off on 3.29 stock. I installed installLocationMod, which enabled me to move any apps, even those not necessarily programmed, to be moved on 2.2 to the SD card. I basically moved everything that's not system, gapp, or widget related.
Everything works great, until I have to reboot, or I attach the phone to a PC as a hard drive. Basically, the apps don't come back after the phone comes back up, or its disconnected from the PC. I have to spend many hours doing reboots, battery pulls, dalvic cache wipes, etc, and then seemingly randomly, they pop back up.
When they're missing in the app list, the settings / app manager shows that they're there, but they're always "computing" when I select one to read the properties. Also, the market installer gets stuck, and I can't uninstall anything either.
Recently, I've read threads about partitioning the card before moving apps to SD.. is that still necessary with 2.2? Is that why this is such a pain? I'm thinking maybe the only solution is to move everything back to where they came from, and only move those apps that are specifically programmed to be moved on a non-rooted phone, and get rid of the modlocationinstall program altogether. That's a drag because I don't have room for all the apps, so I'll have to lose some... which is one of the reasons I rooted to begin with.
Any ideas? BTW, this is the second SD card that does this. The card is good.
Thanks,
Mike
Hey, I found this elsewhere on the forums in the LimeMOD rom in regards to mod install location:
"important !!! after a reboot you need to stop LauncherPro in the running applications menu to reload all sd installed apps !!! "
Could Sense be the reason for the missing apps issue? Is there a way to 'postpone' it on reboot?
Thx,
Mike

I'm thinking I might try stopping the Sense service after the reboot and letting it restart and see if they come back. I'll try it if I have to reboot again.. I'm actually avoiding rebooting at all cost now since it takes hours of frustration to get back to working order again.
Another thing I noticed.. alot of programs have that I moved have hidden services that are listed in a start-up auditor I installed just to see what the system was doing on boot up. I originally thought I'd be safe moving them since I didn't have widgets associated with them, or they didn't seem system related. Now I'm beginning to realize that I might have to be more careful what is moved, since I don't always know how they'll behave on boot. I suppose that's another reason why its best for non-techies just to rely on devs to build the default 2.2 a2sd behaviour into their programs, rather than forcing them there with stuff like mod install location.
Oh well... I'll keep you all updated when I know more. I'm rather surprised though, that more people aren't experiencing this...
Restarting Sense doesn't do anything. It seems still to be completely random.. usually after 4 or 5 hours of me continually manual rebooting. Nobody has any input at all?

update:
After several unsuccessful reboots, I was able to get back the apps by going into settings / phone storage and unmounting the card, and remounting it, with no reboot. I've tried that in the past and just had the phone lock up, but this time it worked. FWIW, modinstalllocation was set to auto, and debug was off. I don't know if its repeatable, since I don't relish having half my phone unavailable for half the day to test it, but next time I lose everyting, I'll try it again and update the thread. I realize that judging from the lack of responses, most of you all don't really care, but since one guy did say he had the same problem, and to prevent someone in the future from going through all this aggravation, I'll keep on top of this. It will be my little contribution to the forum...
UPDATE: Had to finally do a reboot, and all the SD apps came back! I'm thinking the card dismount/remount did the trick

[Q] phone downloading 80+ megs every night

About a week ago my phone started downloading 'something', about 80 megs of something, every night. It must happen in the middle of the night, I've never been awake to witness it happen. When I look at my phone in the morning I have no system messages, nothing indicated in download manager, basically no hint that anything had happened. I would not have noticed had I not been checked my data usage with my provider.
3G Watchdog attributes it to "Downloads / Media Storage / DRM Protected Content Storage / Download Manager". I have no idea what is afoot here. I don't remember much changing in the last week except for the Market update that was pushed out. No ROM changes or anything radical like that.
Look for advice how to isolate this and make it stop.
HTC Desire Z running Gingervillain 1.5
Thanks in advance.
There's nothing like a podcatcher that runs at night? Or maybe updates? Hmm...
Not that I am aware of. And I hoped that 3G Watchdog would tell if that was the case (I only installed it last week, to try and sort out this problem.)
I have my market updates set to manual. I'm not subscribed to any media services as far as I know. And this is the same amount of data every night. Is there any possibility I'm received an OTA Android update or something that my phone doesn't know what to do with?
I tried *#*#4636#*#* but could not figure out how to get any bandwidth usage stats out of it, so for now this is all the detail I have.

If you don't have any podcast apps installed and set up to run, or anything obvious like that) you could always mount your media card on your computer and sort by date to see what's new.

Thanks, good idea. I just did a complete search via USB connection (I assume this only checks the SDCARD and not the phone's internal memory?) and I can't find anything new from the last few days. There were no new media files except for a few photos I had taken, and no large system files or anything I couldn't explain.
It definitely doesn't seem like I'm lost 80 megs of storage every day, I probably would have noticed that (maybe.)

Only thing I can think then is to check your sync settings and make sure all the apps you've installed since this has happened are from trusted sources (a few botnets have shown up in Android recently); that and go through your list of installed apps to see if there's anything there that you didn't install (note: there is a rogue app that is listed as 'System' but doesn't have the default Android system icon out there).
Does the app that caught this distinguish (damn, how do you spell that word?) between something actually being downloaded and just general network traffic? Your device may just be hammering the towers for a better signal or something like that.

Actually, there's a means to do this in Spare Parts
Dial *#*#4636#*#* (or launch Spare Parts if you have it installed)
Click Usage Statistics
Click Battery history
Click the Other usage dropdown
Click network usage
Since this is happening at night, you'll need to reboot before bed and then select "since boot" to see what happened overnight.

I just eyeballed all of my applications and I don't see anything I don't recognize. Nothing called System. A few system-ish things where I don't know what they do, but they all have Android icons.
I did have all untrusted applications selected because I installed the Amazon app store a while ago.
The Watchdog app seems to indicate the downloaded data is happening all at once, it's not cumulative data from the day, I can update it real time and see what's happening. Moreover, nothing has changed with my location or phone usage, and I normally would have 1-2 megs of data usage a day tops.
Tonight I will shut of 3G data when I go to bed and I'll see if it generates any kind of warning overnight. Good thing I have a big data plan...
twelvebit, I ran into the same problem you had as my phone was also downloading 80-90 megs data every night for about three days before I noticed it. I also narrowed it down to Download Manager. Another problem I had with it is that it uses a constant data connection at every phone bootup. I had to manually force stop Download Manager at every bootup so that it'll free up the data connection again. I pretty much went through my phone and SD card and there was no new files of any type. I don't use any podcast apps. I also didn't install any new apps before this started. After a couple of days of trouble shooting, I gave up and just did a complete wipe. The phantom data stopped after I reinstalled a new rom and hasn't pop back up since. I was running CM 6.1. Sorry I couldn't be of much help.
I just turn my data off at night because for some reason my phone would do the same. I even got rid of my weather widgets because I couldn't figure the problem out. For weird reason android does that mystery downloading.

So I left data off overnight, and as soon as I turned it back on this AM it immediately did performed the phantom 77 meg download. There was no indication on the phone anywhere that it was downloading anything, it's only because I looked a my usage stats that I saw it happened.
Guess my next step is to wipe...?

I flashed to the nightly cyanogenmod this AM, and in doing so I guess I lost my stats. I've never really used spare parts before. It doesn't look like "the" download has been attempted since I reflashed, but that's typical since it happens once per night.
Right now my biggest network using item is called "0", the others are dialer and android system. What is 0? When I try and select it, spare parts crashes.
Is there a way to get hard numbers out of spare parts, or just the graphs? (it's showing blue and pink bars for each.)

Not sure what '0' is.
Spare Parts just gives you the bar graph but I did another search and found 'Stats' and 'Onavo' in the Market, both should help you find the problemed app. Again, Spare Parts should show it if you reboot before bed and then check it in the morning and narrowing it down by "since boot".
EDIT: I take that back, hit the bar graph in Spare Parts and it gives you the actual data.

Guys, I'm having the exact same problem and I am puzzled why it's happening. I came across something from the droid forum:
In brief, to quote the poster:
I found a thread on the Cyanogenmod forums that supports the idea that while my oldish CM kernel was effectively blocking an OTA from installing, it wasn't preventing it from repeatedly downloading and attempting install. There is an app to fake the fingerprint so an OTA is not even downloaded since it appears to have already been applied. Just installed it so no confirmation of the fix yet, but I should know in a day or so. I'd pretty much concluded that the issue was an OTA since it was always coming via 3G even when I was at home with Wifi on. If it had been a misbehaving app, it would have originated on the phone and would have used Wifi. An OTA originates from the carrier so always comes via 3G. IMHO.
Any comment?
It's a little too early to declare victory, but last night was the first night on the new ROM and the phone did not do any inexplicable downloading.
If I learn anything else I will post it here for those others who are suffering the same issue.
Get traffic counter. It'll tell you what's using those megabytes. I used almost 1GB on my phone and it was the friend stream app on HTC Sense & Sensation.

[Q] apps gone after reboot

Im running a stock hox with the latest update. Before the last update I had the problem I was hopeing that after this new update it would change but unfortunate itdoesn't.
I have about 12 pages of apps. I spend at least 3 hours a day avarage on this phone if not more. Love the device best phone I had so far but. When I was on vacation last may. I got the issue where my sdcard was gone. So I called HTC and they told me to reboot using that 3 second hard reboot p whatever its called. It did the trick and thusfar I have used this phone quite a lot. But since about 2 months I had the problem that after installing a minor update I had to reboot. After reboot my apps were gone. I lost 70% of my downloaded apps. After searching in a couple of settings I found that if I openend settings where you can copy apps to you and such to make room. I make this app scan for apps to move or remove. And I close it. After that the apps show. After the last update still nothing changed. Other then that I now get issues with my memory to. I can't even move a app that's 6megs big to my sd card even though the diskusage app shows about 10gigs free. Here comes another weird part in the disk usage part of settings its shows even 14 gigs free but that's not correct either. Since I get these problems to. I'm was hopeing to find a solution.
So my main concern. How come after reboot I lose all my apps.
Hope somebody can make any sense I do had to add I tried finding a solution but i couldn't find anything usefull. or anything about this for that matter thanks in advance for any help.
P.s. I seem to have ended up in general instead of q&a could a mod maybe put this post in the right place. Thanks!
Similar problem is also encountered, in which all applications in sdcard are disappeared after rebooting.
Require 1 or more times of reboot to solve it.
Need a permanent solution to this problem as well.

S4 Mini behaves strangely

I apologize for my English, I'm Brazilian, and they told me to go to XDA to solve my problem.
In this case, I'm using Google Translate.
Hello, I have an S4 Mini, which is behaving in a very strange way and I already tried to make the two solutions that I found, that would be to put the Stock Rom, and the Hard Reset but that did not solve.
The symptoms I have noticed in him so far are:
1 - Battery behaves strangely (Sometimes I turn on and off the battery comes back with another charge). And it gets very fast when I'm using it. But the battery is new.
Android takes actions alone, for example, it is 0% I connect it, it unlocks the screen alone, and opens the native browser the "Internet", and goes to a page that is like a map, and starts to Write random things, like, McFWjham; KAMV.
3- The use of data has remained high when it is active.
4- Sometimes when it is working normally, it opens native programs for no reason, the most common is the "Internet".
So I do not know what else to do, the cell phone is very well preserved, no visible problems, no crumple of drops, the problem is just in time to use kkk. Help me pls.
#Edit :The screen when active uses 40% to 50% of the battery according to Android.
The "Android System" occasionally gets to spend 60% of the battery.
When the battery is locked it tends to remain, but when I use the smartphone, the battery tends to decrease with the second ones very fast.
The battery is new.
Please help me T.T

Sounds like you have a malware infection (though can't be 100% sure) maybe adware, I would guess. Factory reset should have fixed it and reinstall stock rom would definitely fix it even if malware rooted your phone. So that means there is an easy way for reinfect to happen.
Reinfection can happen many ways eg via bad app, through your google account, cloud storage, wifi, other network you have joined etc. Unfortunately it can be very hard to stop if you don't know how it's happening.
1st lets assume it's a bad app you installed, try run a good antivirus like Avast, does it show malware? Clean anything it finds. If you are lucky it will only be adware app that you reinstalled yourself after the new rom, once removed you will be OK and phone clean. But if it comes back by itself then it will take more work to find how it happens.
[Note: You can also boot phone into safe mode which will only allow system apps to run, it is a way to test if it is a bad 3rd party app, is the problem stopped now 3rd party apps can't run?. (though if your phone has been rooted by malware and bad app installed as system app, then bad app will still run). If you think it might have been rooted, download a root checker app to test]
Change the software.

I have avast installed, and cleaned, but not changed at all.
My device was already rooted by me, when I gave the hard reset and soon after the exchange of the rom stock, the root was undone,
I installed Root Checker and it said root was not properly installed.
And as for the security mode, I turned the phone on in safe mode, and when the screen was unlocked, it automatically opened the "internet" browser, on the same page as always.
What should I do?

ummm .... I was expecting it was just going to be a bad app serving ads, this is going to be hard
OK, that should rule out 3rd party apps (assuming you have avast set to find all PUP/PUA, etc & nothing white listed) but not finding anything may mean malware is embeded in ROM or malware was able to open port on your system but then uninstall itself or just that there is a line of code that points browser to a server that is serving adware so antivirus is not finding it. Some malware is able to hide from anti virus software in different ways. Try this app, it is not true antivirus, you run it manually, don't worry if one or two antivirus companies like white armour identify malware, they do often even on clean phone.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.funnycat.virustotal
You can also submit any unknown app to virus total white this app for testing. Also you must submit the bad url your browser is connecting to for testing, this will help it spread to all anti virus database.
Good news is you do not appear to be rooted. But the ROM you flashed may still be bad. Where did you get the stock ROM you flashed? I would only use a trusted source like sammobile.com/ but even that is no guarantee. You could try flash another ROM, though as this happened on previous ROM it's probably a good ROM, unless you are getting all your ROM from same site that is not well known as trusted.
So that would suggest they are able to get easy access to your phone either via your google account, cloud service, local network at home/work/public, or through your modem/router.
Check your local network doesn't have a neighbour or other unknown device connected with this app Fing
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.overlook.android.fing
Of course even if you recognise all devices that doesn't mean your brothers etc phone is not the source.
Do the same with other networks you have access to.. Talk to work, any one else infected? Change you password. If using public wifi always use a vpn.
Likely source is your modem/router, Log into your modem router check for updates for it, (if old and not supported you may need a new one), update or if latest firmware do a factory reset, now reboot and use a new password (do this at the same time you reset ALL your passwords, or you might just allow them to find new passwords and reinfect you)
Check your goggle account does not have someone else set for account recovery and/or two factor authentication. (set it up if not already on) Change password and ALSO change password on any other recovery account (write them down )
do the same for cloud storage, and scan storage for virus if possible eg dropbox local folder on pc. Unlink cloud storage from mobile until you are clean to block this route of reinfection.
Update any other device software & change passwords eg xbox, printers etc
I think there's something I'm forgetting
Now reflash stock ROM ( I would also suggest then flashing an up to date custom ROM with most recent security patches)
Things you can do that may help temporarily .....
Install a firewall app like netguard and block internet access to browser, through may not work as root etc is open by default. Oh yes, that reminds me of one thing I forgot, check your DNS has not been hijacked, netguard shows dns url in settings, change if you cannot find who dns server your phone is using, use google 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 if you don't know what to set.
Use an app like Link2SD, Titanium Pro to freeze apps, but you will need root for this.
It's a lot of work (& I think there is something I am forgetting), you may get away with just factory resetting your modem or something as it appears to just be adware so they probably don't have access to your accounts etc, but I tried to cover everything.
Hope I'm making sense through goggle translate!
Phone with mind of its own may not be hacked or haunted. It can in fact happen when it's exposed to moisture or water. Try putting the phone in a bag of rice for several hours, this will draw out all moisture. Hairdrayer may damage electronics because overheating.
If hacked, I would do following steps:
- modem update with odin (manuals search XDA)
- update latest TWRP (dito on XDA)
- start phone in Recovery mode and wipe everything, also Format Data on SD and external SD. Simple Factory reset my not delete it (use Advaced wipe)
- Install LOS14.1 from arco (check compatibility first, other version available for double SIM) It comes with latest security patches.
- Install Open GApps nano or pico. Install other Gapps later if you need.
- start phone, skip setting for WLan to see if everything works without Network.
Does it work? ...then an open WLan could be hacked, try a secure first or mobile network.
Good luck
Hello guys!
The battery drop problem is a common failure with this i9195 phone. I did a research but you have to help me as well by providing IMEI S/N (located under the battery) in PM to me!
New battery doesn't helps!
My current research: If your phone made in Vietnam in the 1-line ~2013, then you will have a dead motherboard soon, before that battery issue is occuring.
So please give me your details and I will look after it.
Do anyone know when they stopped producing i9195 and i9195i ? I need to buy the latest version, because my i9195 was made in 2013 and have that battery drain issue even with new batteries...
Thanks.
