[Q] Phone Goes Crazy - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So every custom ROM I've tried (TrulyEpic, Syndicate, Nebula) after a while it just stops working correctly. I end up with constant need of reboots and then Google Services Framework always FC's on me. Apps start to FC and it all goes downhill. I have yet to have a ROM last longer than a month without doing this. I don't download a lot of apps and the ones I do use are very mainstream.
Does anyone else have this problem or is it my handset? All is well as long as I stick to stock. I hate stock though, because I do rely on tethering and I'm not paying double for data. That and Syndicate is so fast and smooth.
Thanks for listening to my venting. Sorry for taking up forum space.

You really need to search...
The FCs are due to data corruption, you can't improperly shut off a no-journaling ROM or that's what happens. Reflash your rom, make a NAND backup then install the backup and journaling will be on and it will stop happening.

Sorry, I did and I couldn't find what I thought was the issue. I did give you a thanks though because I didn't know that.

It's fine, I was just saying you should search because there are a dozen threads where people are complaining about tons of FCs.

As for a NAND backup, would I need NANDROID or would the Backup/Restore in CWM work for that? If I need NANDROID then I'll probably just keep a copy of the ROM on my SD card an reflash whenever I get corruption.
EDIT: Nevermind, I think I got it.

[Q] freezing problem

Hi everyone!
first, happy new year!
I have a problem with my desire...it freezes in a way that the pulling the battery out is the only thing that helps...it doesn't respond to any button, the screen os off and I can't wake it up
it's rooted with unrevoked, clockwork recovery
tried different roms, the best for me is baadnwz dhd port...
been on that for a while and didn't have the freezing problem, then I flashed the miui..
went back to baadnwz and it started to freeze...a few times a day
then I reflashed it, uninstalled the font changer and that helped...for two days(thought that was the problem) but tonight(~36h from the clean install of the rom) it froze again...
so, I don't think it's the rom, obviously it is not the font changer...
why is this happening, has anyone encounter this before, is there a solution?
please advise, what should I do?
thank you
For what it's worth...
If you can get it back to stock ROM, then do so. Then take it back to the place you bought it and demand a brand new replacement. I would even go so far as to note/print a few pages of some the forums as evidence of the widespread problem.
If my (and many other people's experiences) on here are anything to go by, then your problem will only get worse...and let's face it, whoever has heard of a electronic non-software related problem getting better on it's own? Having read just about every available post on the subject I've concluded that no amount of flashing/reflashing/fiddling is going to fix it.
Sorry to be negative about it, but them is just the facts as I see them.
hmm...so it's like that huh?
what do you mean "if" I can go to the stock rom?
can't I flash the original rom, or ruu or something?(I don't know, never tried something like that)
but then again, I'm not sure that it isn't a software problem...I'm just lurking around to see if anyone has encountered this before and solved it....
if all else fails, I'll flash a clean rom without restorin my apps and see how it goes from there...
just my experience

In all honesty, you may be able to reflash back to stock ROM. It may well depend on what firmware you have on your phone and whether your phone is branded (mine is T-Mobile UK). I know when I originally got mine and rooted it, it was hboot 0.83. It went wrong (external speaker stopped working). I was able to flash it back to stock ROM and I sent it back to HTC. When I finally got it back after 8 weeks (long story involving HTC incompetence and bad luck/incompetence with UPS), it was on hboot 0.93.0001. I rooted it with Unrevoked and installed LeeDroid 2.2f ROM. Shortly afterwards, it started to freeze/reboot. However, everything I've read so far leads me to believe LeeDroid wasn't the cause of the freeze/reboot fault. The problem is far too widespread (just Google 'HTC Desire reboot freeze problem') for it to be caused by a particular custom ROM.
Anyway, the upshot for me is that no matter what I've tried, I haven't been able to get it back to stock ROM and therefore, can't send it back for repair/replacement.
I sincerely hope you have better luck than me.
well, I'll see how it goes..
thank you for your answers
is there a way that I can make a log or something to see whether an application is doing this or something else?
well, I think I solved my problem, and for further reference here's a post that I did in another thread where this was disccused..
trikpa said:
just to let you guys know, I don't have any more freezes
some say it's because of the sense rom, some it's the dhd rom, others told me it's the radio or the ril files....
tried all of that plus few more things and nothing...
well, it turned out to be my backup(or an app in it..)
I always backed my apps and data with my backup pro, very nice app that restores everything....but the last rom flash I did, I didn't restored my apps&data and started fresh installs...and no freezing
I don't know what exactly caused problems, but one more thing that may be responsible...I flashed "font changer" and changed system fonts on my phone...and then backed my apps...maybe that's he deal...dunno...
anyways, I'm back with a killer phone with the best rom out there - baadnewz's

Do you still have any issues with the phone freezing sometimes when charging from A/C?
Mine doesn't freeze as much as it used to since updating the RIL files but being left charging seems to upset it

OK, that sounds good. I only usually recover a few items using Titanium backup but next time that I flash a ROM update. I'll start it all from scratch and hope to get the same result as you.
I don't know, maybe it was a specific app but I don't have the time nor the will to test each one of them
I've got the same problem. Now that I read your post it makes sense.
Restored my apps trough titanium backup and 5 hours later my phones freezes.

Yes, I've solved my problem by buying a new SD card.
This time from Kinsgstond instead of Sandisk.
Hope it solves your problem too.
My phone freeze after charfing while its off. I noticed that it freezes when it says "preparing SD card". This happened twice so far

well, I did buy a new 8GB card, but it never occured to me that it could be the problem....I think it didn't freeze right after I switched cards...
for now I flashed a newer version of the rom I'm using and will see how it goes...if not, I'll switch cards again
thanks for your answer

I'm curious
Well so far I have reflash the phone after a factory reset + wipe with no app restored via backup. It is performing ok so far. Last freeze was 2 days ago. I will wear down the battery to get a chance to charge it up this afternoon. I will see if it freezes again.

[Q] Recover Corrupt Data from No Journaling Boot Loop

My Battery may be going bad it's been holding weird charges lately. So it dies while its plugged in and charging and I'm in boot loop hell. I have my texts and call logs backed up with SMS+ so I know I only lost a few and my last full CWM back up was like 5 or 6 weeks ago, but to make things easier..
Is there any way I can recover some apps or texts from the backup I made after my files were corrupted? I am assuming it doesn't corrupt every last thing. Any help would be appreciated. I searched didn't find anything..

You can use Titanium backup and after getting your system stable again, ONLY restore data to those apps that you absolutely have to have data for and then only 1 at a time and make sure they work. If they FC, clear data and count it as lost. You should be able to recover some databases like if you use memo, or game data, stuff like that. If you can do without the data, like resetting up your email and passwords, do it. It will save you a headache.
You can extract stuff out of a cwm backup. Like apps, data, system stuff, etc. There's a guide in development

I got my phone working but I cant get the texts or call logs out of the backup I tested a few apps and it has worked beautifully.. I also searched the development thread and couldnt find anything about the manual method.. Anyone have a link or some keywords??
On an unrelated note I was thinking of going from Midnight Rom 5.3 to ACS 1.2 any thoughts?? I have been so busy with work I haven't been online to keep up with the devs.. Thanks for the help Ive been coming here like 4 or 5 years now and guys like you all are the reason why!
A way to unyaff the nand backup I believe is what you need to search for. Hope I spelled that right.

First off are you undervolting? Secondly if you have an issue like this it can be the cause of a few things. Did you restore data with Titanium Backup?
Also, even though it may not be specific to this rom if you do a search on here or google for random reboots you may find solutions that others have had. I understand the rom may not be the same but quite honestly this is a semi-common issue with custom roms and this question has been asked quite often.
Good luck and when in doubt wipe/format all and just load the rom and run it for a few hours without any apps
Did you put that theme over a stock rom?
odexed?
I put it over the blazer rom which it was made for. I cleared delvic cache and cache partition and it hasnt rebooted since and that was hours ago. Is that something you should do every once in a while to keep it running good?

Also no I am not undervolting or overclocking or anything like that. All system settings are default.
Well I thought everything was ok with the phone but it is restarting again! I am getting really frustrated I love this phone but I dont know how much more of its bull**** I can take! I am getting ready to throw the ****ing thing out the window! How would I know if I am undervoltin or anything like that? I did not mess with any system settings when I installed the rom.

I did not do a full factory wipe because in the directions he said to just flash the blazer rom 2.0 then a modified calkulins wipe then flash the 3.2 He said no data wipe was required.
Hey I was just wondering could this be caused by a faulty sd card? I noticed yesterday that when I went to access my sd card it was unavailable. Could the sd card bieng faulty cause a system crash that would lead to a reboot? I do have some apps installed on the sd card.

If you really want to fix your issue you have to troubleshoot to death. Do it all, format sdcard, do a clean install and anything else you can think of. Thats the best way to troubleshoot. Just nandroid your setup now and use TB to save data and go for it....
Don't worry bout asking us since a response may not come fast enough so just jump right in and get your phone up to speed. Or your can odin a stock EL26/13/30 rom..

Need some help after bad rom install/reset

I attempted my first rooting and install of darthstalkers rom last night. the step by step instructions were well laid out, and the process was pretty smooth. however after completing the rom install, and began getting various errors such as 'gallery not responding', 'omacp has stopped working',etc. over a dozen different errors in total. kies wouldnt connect to restore my settings, etc.
i decided to flash back to stock, and followed the instructions perfectly, which again were very easy. kies connected instantly on stock, and everything seemed ok. however im still getting the same errors as i was with the darthstalker rom. now i bought my s3 outright (its not part of any package), so i have no warranty issues, however my phone is completely hosed now. i cant send texts, cant view email, nothing. i'm honestly regretting ever doing this.
any help/tips/suggestions so that i can go back to the way i was? ive tried everything that my googlefu has led me to, and nothing has worked.

I did it last night, but in my tired confusion, i may have fudged it up. going to do it now and ill update in a few minutes. Thanks for the help thus far.
when flashing to stock through Odin you retain the same cache and therefore you can have some issues of force closes..which is why a factory reset is always best....and mandatory when going from 4.1.1 to 4.0.4
That's a very stable ROM and I'm surprised at the issues you had. I have a feeling it wasn't the ROM or anything you did persay but bad flashes happen which it why most of us have a nandroid to fall back on just in case. Sometimes a re-flash does the trick to fix problems.

Ok well i wiped cache/data in recovery mode and all seemed ok (not sure if its worth noting, but the recovery menu/screen was totally different from last night - the one last night was touch screen with ++++ before and after each menu choice, and the one today has me using the volume keys to move and power to select).
i went to do kies restore and it went smoothly, but is now sitting on the last option, 'restoring call log', for quite a while. So i guess ill update this again when kies finishes up.

Settings, not much can be done about that. It's needed to wipe them when going to a custom ROM (same goes when updating to avoid issues).
Titanium Backup can save your Wifi, apps and apps data (requires root). Also can save your texts and call logs with it.

Sounds like you booted into stock recovery which is what you wanted.
I used to think it was a pain restoring settings all the time but after 100 or so ROM's over various devices its takes 10-15 minutes to do that and install my apps form the market (I only use maybe 20 or so and maybe are one I have apk for already.
Everyone's first time is a bit awkward and messy... gets fun after you do it enough
So its possible it was just a bad install? This isnt a very technical or tough thing to do, but becomes a serious pain int he ass when things go awry. Would love to have the darthstalkers setup, though. I just hate to do it and have it all be FUBAR'd again.

Keep in mind that flashing a custom ROM also means flashing the updates (as it can always get better and there are bugs to fix), meaning that you will have to factory reset every time (which resets your settings, cleans your apps and such). So it's something you kinda have to get used to when flashing.
That's also why I suggested Titanium Backup, it saves a lot of time when it comes to apps, wifi, call logs, texts, etc. You'll still have to go through your settings, emails and accounts though.
If you wanna go ahead and give Darthstarkers another try, re-download it and make sure you follow their full instructions.

its true. the first time around is always a little bumpy. as long as you are doing things correctly and installing the correct files, things will only go smoother with time.
this is just my preference, but once i've transcended stock (to aosp), i dont mess around with kies anymore. i know you had your things backed up via that route but ask around and you'll see, there are a lot of useful apps out there that can backup and seamlessly restore everything you want after flashing.
dont give up. everyone deserves the performance and style they want on their device. next time you're ready, let us know. between myself, hednik and a few others, we can get you the best way to do this right here in one thread versus 20 different sites/threads/opinions. cheers

Storage issues help

I'm suddenly having storage issues with every ROM that I flash after running a ROM with some script that isn't widely used.
First I'll give you a brief idea of my problem. I"m running out of storage and get notifications from the market saying as much after I download and reasonable amount of apps. The thing is... It show's I have used 738MB of ext4 out of 1.5 so that isn't the issue. The problem is internal memory. My phone won't move dalvik cache for some reason. When I run any ROM with a2sd or m2sd they both say that there is a problem and leave the dalvik cache where it is.
I think my internal folders are jacked up from 40ad2sdx or a zip that was used to clear memory before the ROM. There was a ext4 superwipe cleaner to load before the ROM. I did that without researching first. When I did go looking for the thread about it, it plainly said that it was for one phone only, and it wasn't my phone. I believe it was the Galaxy S3, but I can't be certain. It was a week ago. It was advised not to use it on any other phone because part of what it did was reset the internal folders. Does this mean I can now flash a ROM for the galaxy s3? Lol Just kidding.... Seriously, the second part is all my speculation and I have been wrong many times concerning android. Will somebody help me get my phone back in oem condition please?
Okay, I'm not even sure what you did here, because not knowing the script, anything could have happened.
Try wiping everything and flashing stock rooted here, then go from there with other roms after that.
If that doesn't work. Here's what I would do. It might be a major pain, but it is almost a surefire fix.
Unroot and return to stock, then root again.
[UNROOT]
[ROOT]
For future reference, NEVER flash anything that is meant for another device. (Obviously, if it's a port then you're ok.)
ALSO EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Backup your SD card, and wipe that puppy clean!! Only partition using Amon-RA recovery, otherwise it will screw you up quite often. I repeat, if you do not have the partition done correctly, then odds are that A2SD or equivalent won't work.

I did the wipe and flash to stock earlier today, then flashed the Pac man ROM but the issue is still there. I had looked at unrooting my phone earlier today also. I'm glad to read this because it lets me know that I do have some idea of what to do. Thanks for the reply. I'll post here again with the results. Check back soon.
EDIT----> Man, my phone is okay. I loaded up a fairly recent ROM by Tronit, and it worked fine. It was the ROMs. Just to be sure, I went back to the last two ROMs just to see, and they did the same thing again. Now I'm on the AOKP Unnoffical and it's working just fine. The a2sd is working perfectly like it should, and my dalvik cache is moving to ext4. It was just coincidental that the last three ROM's I loaded all have issue with the a2sd. It's funny how nobody else see's problems but me. I looked in the bin file of one of them and it's missing part of the a2sd file. The other two have weird init.d files that I don't know anything about. I'm assuming the a2sd problem is related to that. It's funny how I see lots of problems, and report them, but I get blown off by some people as a noob who is making mistakes. I am a noob, and I do make mistakes, but I know some of my theories about problems are correct...... I gotta get me some respect by compiling my own ROMs.
Status update..... My phone is jacked up for sure. It does work with the AOKP Unofficial by Tronit, but this morning when I cleared my cache with Smelkus Recovery, it had major problems with almost every app. Clearing the cache in recovery is something I've done with every ROM and this has never happened. I uninstalled all the apps and reinstalled them. Got them working again. Everything seemed to be okay. However, when I cleared my cache with Android Tuner, again it ruined every app. I've used android tuner every day for two months to clear the cache and never had problems like this. Something is very wrong.

Long story short, I flashed something made for another phone. I can't explain why I did this without taking up lots of pages, and it doesn't even matter really. Lets just focus on the solution. Here is the link. I flashed both of the zips in the link.

So I think my permissions for the files on my phone are out of whack. Is that what I"m reading is the possible outcome of flashing these if your phone is not the one listed? Please post your thoughts. I need them.
Try backing up your SD card on a computer and format you SD card and repartion it

I did that. Both with Smelkus, and Mini partition wizard. Same problems. I just tried to fix permissions with smelkus 4.3 on the AOKP Unofficial ROM and it took a minute for it to do it's thing. The line of dots was two full rows. So when It loaded back up, I suddenly see the same disk Icon in my notification bar, and now this ROM says it it out of memory. Man, it was working fine. I had twenty more apps on it too and I uninstalled them. It was working fine then, so with twenty less apps, it shouldn't suddenly say "Running out of Storage space."
I have told you this already: Please do not flash things meant for other phones, it could mess up. If it's meant for another device, it might screw yours up. To stay on the safe side: If it's not generic (works for every Android phone) or phone specific (exclusive to the Evo 4G) then don't flash it.

I flashed this about a eek ago, when I was looking for the ext4 wipe. I thought it was the same thing as another zip despite what it said. Stupid... I know. I think this may be the cause of my problems, but I can't be sure. I don't know at all really. Just speculations. I reflashed the CWM touch and used to flash a stock ROM. Gonna try that again. I ran the test on CWM touch and it said that the
/sys/class/android_usb/android0 was missing and unable to perform the test. Can this be the cause of my problems?
Don't beat yourself up man, it was an honest mistake, just learn from it and you'll be alright.
Now the optimal recovery for this device would be the Amon-RA recovery, and I recommend redoing what I said in my first post once you have Amon-RA installed. Amon-RA is an awesome recovery, and it's super easy to install. Check out this easy-to-follow video on how to install by clicking here.
Do that, then do what I said in the previous posts. Let me know what happens, because I'm almost certain this should work.

I tried loading the Pacman ROM again with CWM and it wouldn't even load. It gets stuck in a bootloop. After that I flashed smelkus and went back to the Stock Rom.

As I stated in my pm give me a day or so till I get back home and I will check into a fix for you. Only don't expect any one on one help. If the fix works cool if not I will dig further. TNN strives to help with any issue no matter who is at fault. I will look at the wipe script you flashed and see if it can be undone. Just be prepared of the possibility that your phone may never work correctly again.

I was finally able to get my phone straightened out. I loaded up a stock ROM then decided to use my SD Maid to look around. I found a file with completely different dates on it, but it wouldn't let me remove it. I ended up copying everything else in the subfolder and then deleted the parent folder. Then added everything else back. Wah lah.... magic. I don't know what that file was or where it came from but it was killing my internal memory. I'm wondering how it stayed from ROM to ROM. I dunno, but it's gone, and the Pacman ROM is lovely now. BOOM!!!!

Whatever I did only fixed part of the issue. I'm left with in a situation where every time I go into recovery my downloaded apps stop working. It is cutting part of them off whether I clear cache or not. All I have to do is power off into recovery, and when I reboot, all of my downloaded apps begin giving messages that "Unfortuately such ans such has stopped." My phone becomes inoperable. The only way I can keep it working is to send a new launcher to my phone from the market, let it install, then open it up and uninstall all the downloaded apps. I'm pretty sure this is an easy fix for someone like you Mancuso. I have a logcat and it show LOTS of errors that I have never seen before on any of my other logcats. What are my options? Tell me what to do to get my phone back to absolute OEM and then I'll reroot. UNLESS you know of some fix.
I've supplied a logcat from Catlog if you or anybody else wants to have a look. I'd really appreciate some help here. I love my Evo and I love learning this stuff. If somebody can help me positively identify the problem, I can most likely figure it out from there. Please give me your suggestions here. I'm nothing without some guidance on this. It's way out of my scope.
I've included a link to the ext4 script wipe that I used. How I got to this page, I do not know. However, I ran it because this page said it COULD POSSIBLY work on other phones despite the fact that it was made for another phone.
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/darkside-super-wipe-easily-wipe-partitions-when-flashing-roms/
And I flashed both zips from the thread that the story links users to. Here is the link for the two zips.

I'm not sure this is the problem. I'll try to find the Vold.fstat thread that I tried on my own before you came up with the 40ad2sdx solution for the MIUI ROM.
This is the memory fix I tried as mentioned above.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2246909
Please note that you see before and after pics of sd storage. You can see that my pics clearly resemble the after pics shown in this thread. I believe this is my problem. How can I undo this?
This post reflects the only things I did outside of normal flashing. My problem is here somewhere...
The fix you used is for samsung devices. That could have caused your problems.
