[Q] Contacts.apk Padding and Spacing - Galaxy S I9000 Themes and Apps

Hi.
I've started to theme my sgs with darky v9.5 for my needs.
And now I also wanna mod the app's xml-files.
I read about it in some tutorials and I understand that trying is the best to learn.
But I have 2 starter-questions:
1.) For example I have a concrete modding-wish: The padding on the sides of the contact list seems very annoying to me. (Pointed in pic). I wanna reduce it and downsize the whole list to get faster overview. Somebody already modded this or knows the xml-file to do?

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
2.) Modding (esp. system apks) seems to be very time-consuming, because as far as I know the changes can't be viewed directly (with any tool), but the apk have to be pushed to phone and reboot.
Is there a way of faster modding / previewing the changes with the emulator or sth?
Thanks for your help,
Max

I dont know any faster method.
I know something that could help you in situation while you are hammering your head against the wall, I mean -> you just 'cant get the layout right, no matter you try'
Before I begin:
You would need to be familiar with eclipse and creating layouts there.
So..
Create new android project in eclipse
edit layout.xml; paste the contents of the file you are modding...
Workaround all errors that WILL happen
You will see layout rendered in xml file wysiwyg...
Its not easy, but if NOTHING works, it really helps.
This was the thing I did while modding the phone to have big caller picture...

Thanks, if nothing else works, I'll try this

Today screen icons

Hello all
I have searched this forum for ages now, about 70 pages, and can;t find anything to do with what i want to do.
Basically i want to change the default icons on the today screen, like for messages, and calender and tasks.
Is it possible and if so how do you go about doing it, i imagine that it has something to do with the plugin DLL's but i am not sure.
Thanks
Dahquim
Dahquim: I've never tried it, but as these are system dlls, likely steps are do a live rom dump, grab the necessary dlls from the dump (deriving the necessary names from the "Today" dll entries in your registry).
From there, do a resource hack of the dlls, replace the bitmaps/icons, and then save, and overwrite back into your windows folder.
Being ROM/system dlls, it's likely the OS won't let you overwrite these dlls (in which case you would have to write your own rom).
It's also likely the ROM dump procedure will not dump the resource entries (bitmaps/icons etc) correctly, so the whole procedure may be futile. You could try to sidestep this by extracting the files from a decompressed ROM, but that can also often fail to produce (easily) usable dlls.
It may be very easy and I just make it sound hard. It may be very hard and I just make it sound harder.
But, all in, it may be easier to replace the plugins with 3rd party components.

Thanks VJ
And weldone on some great software.
Unfortunately I am only a ASP programmer, so have little experience with DLL files. The icon that i want to change is the Messages icon, as this is the only plugin that i want to change, can u recommend any plugins that have the same functionality (which is very little) that has a customisable icon??
Thanks All
Generally I'd recommend PhoneAlarm, but I'm not 100% sure it's WM5 yet. Depends on what you're using. It provides a lot of functionality in one place

My take on HTC's green theme (GreeNYC)

Was playing around with my dash recently , after flashing it to the htc's rom and made a couple changes, so I thought I'd share.
I know alot of people dislike the green theme, but I like it, so figured maybe someone else will too.
I'm using an official htc rom.
Here are a few shots of changed icons and bg's and how it looks:

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
As you can see I've edited the xml, I've also compressed some of the fields down so you don't get the scrolling home screen, where everything you need is pretty much contained within one page:
I've also edited the branding brick on top to reflect the regular alphanumeric code (since there is no alphanumeric translation like there is on the tmo rom):
And added on the following backgrounds for misc actions:
To Do: all you have to do is place the files in the same folder structure that appears in the zipped file (using either resco explorer or whatever explorer you use). Then adjust the home screen settings (Settings>Home Screen) accordingly, reboot the phone and you're good. All files are included in the zipped file.
Just always remember to back up your original files.
You made the green look good! Nice work

Twitodo

hey guys
I'm kinda new to programming, done a bit at college and now and then i read up about it at home but i know the very basic skills. anyways i thought i would test myself and see i could come up with an idea for an app.
its not a windows mobile app but i suppose in a way its for developers (can save progress of development and tweet it to followers). the app is called twitodo and it basically saves a todo list to a txt file in the install directory. it can also open a text file from a custom directory. it can also tweet the todo list to your twitter account and you have the option to view twitter in a browser window.
the ui is ok i suppose but it could be alot nicer.. would apreciate it if someone could do a few graphics for me. also if anyone has a link to a good guide for making installers because im not sure that my program install correctly, i think you may have to run it from the program files directory.
anyways feedback will be apreciated very much, anything i can add or remove at all just leave below please i really wanna make this app better, but go easy its my first program unless you count "hello world" then its my second lol.
EDIT:
Changes:
permissions to write file at startup fixed (moved TodoList.txt default location)
fixed crash when user doesnt select a file in load todo list window
Attached Files Updates!
just thort id put a pic of the ui on so u can see what it looks like

[Q] Which XML to edit to fix this?

Hi all,
I use a custom theme that is just a hodgepodge of things I liked from other themes, plus my own touches.
Recently I've noticed an issue where certain text boxes will appear with black text on a black background, making the text invisible. If I click in one of these boxes, the background will temporarily turn white and I'll be able to see the text, but it means clicking on each box that looks like this.
I'm experiencing the issue in multiple apps, but not all.
Here's the problem for a contact. Notice that the first name and phone number are not visible:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
But it doesn't always present an issue. Here's GMail looking fine:
Can anyone tell me which XML entry (or entries) I need to update to fix this?
Thanks!
Your skills probably outreach my own but I think its in values/colors.xml in either com.htc.resouces or systemui. Should be one of them if its a shared value.
This might be tough to track down. What Rom are you using? Do you notice it more in third party or market apps as opposed to system apps?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Sorry - I didn't realize how little info I included in my original post
I'm using CM7 nightlies and this is a Theme Chooser theme. I don't notice any pattern between system apps and non-system apps, but I've switched back to an older version of my theme for now.
I've been able to narrow it down to a point in time... I have one working version "before" and one broken version "after." Now I just need to comb through them to figure out what I changed... then evaluate each change to see which one caused this.

[PROJECT] Optimize ICS for HDPI

I think that Google, during the ICS design process, decided to optimise all of their icons to XHDPI devices. With all the HD devices coming out that was the wise thing to do but when these icons were scaled down they ended up looking very blurred - almost too anti-aliased.
I decided to re-create these icons to look sharper (by removing all of the anti-aliasing, you don't need it at such a small size) adding small modifications as I go along such as changing the data indicator fonts from Droid Sans to Roboto.
Please bear in mind that this is still unfinished, I still have a lot of icons to make.
Here is a comparison:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
May I add, Roboto looks terrible at small font size.
I'll get around to making an update.zip soon, but meanwhile here is a zip file containing all of the images. If you want any other icons made, just post it's name as a reply.
Dos anybody know how to make a one-size-fits-all update.zip (like Vertumus' universal themes)? It will be a bit tedious to change icons in each and every CM9 nightly, plus bezke's AOKP and Codename Android ports!
I would like to see the compqrison but is the pic deleted???

"universal" themes are done using VillainTheme (commonly called VRTheme):
