probably an easy way to do this - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to change the banner on my phone and cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the phone into diag mode. I know dial ##diag# which I assume is actually ##3424#...do I then press to connect the call or what?? I am trying to follow this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=871601
Can someone please explain this to me?

What rom are you using?
There is a SUPER easy way to do it on any AOSP rom, not sure about Sense

Do it that way. Just make the change in the file, then adb push, and reboot and all done.

This happened to me when I deleted some widgets that Sense was using, but I was getting an HTC Sense force close. Not this. Are you rooted? If you don't know, download clockworkmod recovery for the slide and put it on the root of your SD card as update.zip and flash it via recovery. (you get to recovery through the bootloader, selecting recovery with the volume down key, and the power key to select it), and if it gives you a signature verification failure, then you are not rooted. If it succeeds, then flash CR_Mod OTA 1.35.xxx (forgot the exact number, it's in the dev section), and that should fix your problem.

Follow that guide to root your phone, and then flash this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747002
That will give you rooted stock as well as re-update your radio, since rooting downgrades your radio image. Let me know how that all goes

Try downloading the original ESPRING and put it on root of SD card the. Update it by turning on the phone using volume down and power

Actually I revise that. It should be possible. Your phone isn't totally screwed, it boots at least. Look through the guide, I can't at the moment, and see if it actually requires your phone to be booted. I think you can do all of it through hboot and recovery, using adb and ESPRIMG.zip. I really don't remember though, read the guide, try to root your phone.

You can use ADB while in recovery mode, try doing the commands in recovery mode, using clockwork recovery. Although that may not work because it requires toggling wifi. See if you can find and try other rooting methods? There a few different ones out there. Your phone boots into the OS.
I googled around, found that account syncs were causing com.htc.bg to crash. I also noticed that your phone was booting without a sim card in it? Might be a stupid question, but you HAVE tried booting it WITH a sim card right? I also noticed that your hboot date is march 23rd, almost a year ago..?

If none of the other options work about your only other choice would be to try and root it and get s-off, then you could remove the activation from a rom zip and then flash it.

can you give some information how to do that and what is s-off?

did u cancel the *228 activation several times in a row? canceling once only will not work. you must cancel it like 3 or 4 times in a row.
i did it in several times not only 3 to 4 times i did it as many as i can but still doesn't bypass the activation.
many user out their have a same problem as mine and *228 cancel the call works for them, but in my case it doesn't :'(

If your on a gingerbread rom ie 2.3.* then this is the only known method to root and get s-off. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1306400 S-off turns off the bootloaders security and allows editing of system files and flashing things thru hboot like radios and different versions of hboot.
Dissabling the activation is fairly easy. It just requires a build.prop edit, either in a rom zip before flashing or on the rom you are currently on. This requires you to be rooted and s-off though. If you can get your self rooted come back here and i will tell you exactly how.
There is always some danger when modifying your phone from its factory intended state, however thousands do it every day without issues. Just go slow and read carefully, if you follow instructions you should have no issues.

Try these instructions carefully:
1. On the Welcome screen with the touch the android to begin icon, do the following:
2. Tap the top left corner of the screen then
3. Tap the top right corner of the screen then
4. Tap the bottom right corner of the screen ( just above the grey bar along the bottom with emergency dial and change language in it) then
5. Tap the bottom left corner of the screen ( just above the grey bar along the bottom with emergency dial and change language in it).
6. That’s it, should pop up the home screen shortly, if not retry. Remember not to drag your finger, simple tap top left, top right, bottom right, bottom left.
OR This:
When you see the screen that tells you to call to activate just hit call to activate end call, back activate again, end call and repeat 4 times and then it will bypass activation.
Let us know how it goes. Cheers...

1)when the phone calls to *228 tap contacts icon, right to the "end call"
2)try to add a new contact and enter facebook or other socialnet dialog.
phone asks you to enable wifi, do this and connect your wifi network
3)next hold the search button and (via voice search) search in google "market"
4)tap to the official market page, phone asks you about opening this page, choose market app.login in the google accounts,if you need.
5)search in market "usb debug" app. install it and tap "open' in the market app
6)enable usb debugging and enjoy)
thanks to ramazancik94
this is just accidentally
another way if you didn't downgrade to 2.2
1. call *228 and tap the contact on the right side of end call.
2. add contact and put any information.
3. try to connect it in facebook to prompt the setting window.
4. tap setting.
5. tap search softkey and type application.
6. finally you can enable usb debugging without any problem.

Ok your probably going to hate me but the build.prop edit dosent work as i thought it did. I decided to try it my self before i took the time to write it out, and it does bypass setting up the phone (ie. google setup, location service setup), but not the ota programing as i had thought it did. Sorry
However now that your rooted have you tried flashing another rom and then see if you can use one of the tricks like 4 corners, access epst (##778), or call and hang up? The 4 corners trick, call and hang up, and selecting emergency call and typing ##778# choose edit mode and enter 000000, works on my rom, and on several other roms. Note it may not be ##778 on your rom, it could be ##data#, *#*#program#*#*, *#*#data#*#*, ##prog#, ##program#. I saw this which i have never seen before, turn the phone off then back on to get to the language select screen, press volume up, volume down, back, and search one at a time in quick succession
The only other way i know (and tested) to bypass it would be to rename /system/app/Phone.apk to Phone.apk.bak and then reboot. This will bypass ota programing. However by renaming the Phone.apk you can no lonher access EPST which you would need to enter your local carriers info.
You could also look in to QPST, a windows program that can be used to program a phone.

Are you trying to activate it on a local network? If so you need to enter that carriers info in epst, you need to get that info from them.
If your just trying to use it as a mp3 player etc with no service, just change everything in nam settings to zeros. If it says 0004564 change it to 0000000.
Qpst and cdma workshop are similar type programs, but not the same program. Im not very familiar with cdma workshop and if it would work or not.

THIS IS ONLY FOR VIRGIN MOBILE USA OR SPRINT
Now that thats out there here we go:
A prl is the file that tells your phone what towers to use, and virgin mobile doesnt get to use all sprints towers, however you may use them if you were to connect to them. This is what increases your data, especially in a 4G town.
follow this exactly as I say!
You must download QPST, the prl file, an app on the phone and be rooted:
1) download this on the phone "THE APP"
2) Open the app, and accept the superuser request.
3) Tap read MSL
4) Write down your MSL, youll need it
5) Go to the phone app, dial ##PORT# and hit on, then select.
6) Enter your MSL and click ok
7) Plug into a computer and download HTC diag drivers attached to this thread
8) Go ahead and google and download QPST
9) Download and unzip the attached 60681.zip
10) Now for fun, If anything confuses you, google it.
10B) go to the device manager, and select the unknown HTC device, then update driver. then browse>let me pick from a list>have disk>go to downloaded unzipped folder>choose the appropreate folder for your OS type>click the driver. Now open, next, yes, close. Right click HTC Modem, and go to Properties>Advanced port settings>see what your COM port is
10C)Open QPST CONFIGURATION and select port. then add port, here you type the port your HTC MODEM is on.
10D) Your phone will now show up, and you will click start client>service programing
11) click your device and ok.
12) DO EXACTLY AS I SAY NOW! NOTHING ELSE!!! NO LOOKING AROUND!!!!!!!
13) Click read from phone, Give it the MSL you wrote down
14) Now click save to file
15) Click roam
16) Click browse where it says file and in that you put the 60681.prl you downloaded AND unzipped
17) Write to phone. THIS WILL RESTART THE PHONE, BOOT MAY TAKE A WHILE DONT PANIC
18) Enjoy faster internet
i cant find the app needed to do this.. ??
Qpst is on sourceforge and the msl reader is in the market.

is there a different way? i have my msl, htcdiag, and q.. have all that.. not getting it done
The code can only be input on a stock Rom. And go to the HTC site and install HTC sync for our phone (under the downloads section for our phone) ant that install will also install the driver.

[Q] Help - no display, deice works, need contacts

Hi guys. So my GF has this Samsung Galaxy S (Sprint Epic SPH-D700) ... I think I've got the right section. (EDIT: nope. ty kennyglass123. sorry about that :/)
She drops her phone, display stops functioning. However, the device still works - touchscreen is responsive, boots well, etc. The only thing she needs from it is her contacts. "Easy, Google has it, right babe?" ... "No, when it asked me if I wanted to sync with Google I said 'no'" ...
So, I'm wondering if there's a way to grab the contacts that are theoretically stored on internal memory without seeing the screen. Can't connect to PC because device requires input on it, which I can't see. Cell stores can't help because their transfer machines require the same input. Basically I'm wondering if it's possible to do 1 of 2 things before going ahead with an LCD replacement (which I'm comfortable with doing, just a question of money given that she has a different device she can use and she's off-contract now).
Is there a way to extract using something like ODIN or some command-line tool that forgoes the need for too much device-screen input?
Can anyone possibly provide screenshots of the usb-plugin process as it looks on the device? (once USB cable is plugged in and my PC makes the connected ding, if I could see the relative location of the necessary selections I could just hit it blind). My device is a SGS3 and the process is very different, I just have no clue what parts of her screen to touch. This is only helpful if I can use something (Like KIES) on the PC-end to extract something from the device.
Any other ideas would be phenomenal
Please post questions in Q&A

Got an idea. Suppose you have USB debugging already on. Connect to PC (make sure driver's installed) and use ADB to copy the contact database out for use on other Android devices (maybe it'll work, maybe it won't)
I'll get you some detailed commands and operations if you need more help.

Export to SD card
Well, simple way would be to work off of screenshots from a stock Epic, then export the contacts to the SD card. This way you could work blindly on the touchscreen itself, but orient your finger via the screenshots.
I used stock FC09 multiboot, since I'm on AOKP M6.
Step 1: View attachment 1481544
Step 2: View attachment 1481545
Step 3: View attachment 1481546
Step 4: View attachment 1481547
Step 5: View attachment 1481551
you guys rock ty so much for replying.
USB debugging is apparently not enabled . this is probably the most ideal way to go though.
Very awesome of you to provide screenshots. i've tried this a number of times and i have a feeling she doesn't actually know where here contacts icon is. and no touch feedback. any chance you would be so kind as to provide screenshots for enabling USB debugging? assuming menu key from homescreen allows for settings, you can start from there. I would then be able to use the ADB method. if i'm asking for too much please don't feel obligated or anything.
Got an idea. You're on stock ROM? Then flash CWM via Odin download mode, reboot into recovery. CWM has ADB enabled by default. Try it. I may not be able to provide further details but I think this will work if you're familiar with the steps of Odin
Oh yeah, and you may have to manually mount /system and /data to access files... If you need to know how to use CWM in the blind I could flash back to CM7 (recovery's almost the same) and tell ya how you should navigate to the correct items with the directional keys on the QWERTY keyboard.

Stock roms have keyboard short cuts and I'm pretty sure one of them is to open contacts. If someone can tell u what that shortcut is then u can use it along with the screenshots to export them to ur sd card.

Hey, I have a similar situation to the OP as my Epic 4G also has a broken display. If I follow your advice, then would I be able to somehow get the phone into diag/modem mode without seeing the dialer on the screen?

Huh? My suggestion is for times when you want your system files backed up without display... And you maybe trying to use it normally as a phone? Rethink.
However if you know what your ROM looks like after boot (requires you to be VERY familiar with the phone) you should be able to blind operate well. Best of luck to ya.

Tough then... From what I understand you're trying to grab modem-related info for use on other phones? No good idea, but anyway it's possible if you post your ROM, version, we flash it and give ya screenshots. See for yaself and good luck

Power Options menu

Can anyone give me any idea which file has the calls that draws the power options screen? I've been pulling my hair out searching but for the life of me have had no luck. I want reboot to recovery and reboot to download options in the stock menu. If I can get anywhere with this I want to post it for others to have too if they would like to have it.

Thank you, I have an app already installed that will do what I am wanting already but I would rather have the capability within the Power options menu of the phone and not have to use an app. I had this ability on my last phone and would like to have it on the stock rom of my OG Pro.
You can try this instead =)
