Porting 1.6 to dinc... - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone tried to port Android1.6 to the incredible?
Is it even possible?
If no one has, I'd like to give it a shot! I think I have my pc set up for building from source and for porting, just finished with all the downloads and installs with ubuntu 10.10, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
killing in the name of...

Why would you want to port Android 1.6? That's 10 steps back from 2.2 ...

I know, just wanted to see if it was possible, and to see what I could do with it if I was able to port or build.
killing in the name of...

On top of that. My g/f likes my dinc, but she says its too confusing for her, but when I had a MOTO devour, she loved that phone. So I was thinkin that if I could make a custom 1.6 Rom for her, she wouldn't have to steal my phone anymore and turn around and complain about not being able to work it!!
killing in the name of...

1. Probably not possible based on the hardware specifics and apis needed.
2. Why even waste the time? Just date a girl who isn't so stupid that she can't work a drop dead simple OS with a UI layer that makes it even EASIER.

Oooooooook.... thanks for the insight.
I see your point, but do you really have to be a **** about it?

If you're looking for a simple-ish rom try MIUI. It's slightly buggy, but I've used it as my daily since Novemeber 2010. It is visually influenced by iOS so it is possibly more simple to use, but it still offers all the benefits of Android.

Yea, ok. I've used miui before! That may actually work for her, thanks.
It's been about 2 or 3 months since I flashed it, what are the latest fixes and kernel?

How about loading ADW Launcher and making her a super simple 2 or 3 screens with everything she would need then locking the screen?

If you do pull off getting Donut to work on the Inc, I would certainly try it out. I wasn't around for the earlier days of Android and would like to try it out first hand .

why not take 5 minutes and show her how to use the phone? **** even my dad is learning how to use my phone and he still uses a flip phone. convinced him to wait for the Inc2. never thought I'd see the day he used a smartphone. never in a million years. He a construction worker with huge hands, you should be able to teach her what she needs. It's not too hard to distinguish the phone button and stuff like that HTC Sense is made to be simple. just not idiotproof like the iCrap. Good luck.

Teaching her to use this phone is like teaching a 2 yr old quantum physics, and this time she won't even try. I told her there's not really any difference in operating between 1.6 and 2.2 but she just.....don't......get it, and I give up.

Given that they update weekly, quite a lot. It's running GB now, and has incorporated things such as app/system backup, a simple file explorer (with ftp-server functionality) and quite a bit more. The chinese devs created an english side to their site and posted a youtube video of the newest generation. Can't post links yet, but go to youtube and search for "MIUI ROM 7th closed beta version" and it'll pop right up.

How long do we think it will take to root?

With full access to the ROMs and EVOs now, it doesn't seem like it will take long to me. Do any informed experts have any ideas?

took me 7-8 hours to root the samsung moment once we got a copy of the leaked android 2.1....this phone is setup completely different and i dont physically have it to test anything.
im doing some research and hope to figure out a solution, but it'll be hard for me to test it for sure.
if anybody else has some insight with previous HTC and android experience, that'd be great to hear some other opinions?!
or maybe an HTC phone with similar file system structure which was rooted?
joey do u plan on getting this phone? i had a moment but was lucky enough to get the evo off someone that went to i/o.....it would be awesome to have your kernels working on this bad boy!!!

ah dont even worry about the onscreen keyboard it takes a second to get used to it. that was the reason why i picked the moment over the hero but i still found myself using swype lol. as of now im just using the htc keyboard and its pretty slick so far just have to train the dictionary.
i work for sprint, my indirect rep came in with his evo the other day and so i installed swype 1.25 on it. FREAKIN. AWESOME. also, MAD props to joeykrim. i have the moment and he has done SO many wonderful things with it. but it looks like im going to htc...
EDIT: joey, i would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to see you move to the evo and see what that genius brain can cook up. if you ever need a tester, im all over it. been with you on sdx since the days you and speedrabbit were bustin down and fixing 1.5.
IM getting the EVO day of release and maybe another for testing. Let me know when you want to get this thing a try. i just hope it doesn't brick XD
knowing joeykrim, once he gets his grubby hands on an Evo - it'll be rooted there soon after.
glad to see some familiar names over here guys...

Yeah but in case you guys haven't heard the shipped 2.1 rom you guys get may not be final. Sprint could easily push an update to close off root. Just look in the hero section, the final 2.1 RUU is still not able to be rooted by our best devs. Im not trying to worry anybody but it is a possibility.

[Q] Verizon Incredible: pre-purchase questions

A family member has become enamored of my Droid (original) phone running CyanogenMod and asked me about getting an Android phone for them and setting it up. Since I will end up being the Tech Support Department I want to check here BEFORE telling them what to get. I am no guru but fairly familiar with Android devices and rooting, etc.: rooted my Droid a few years ago, installed android-x86 on a netbook and carpc and now have a Nook Color rooted and waiting for CM.
I checked the available phones from Verizon and it looks like the Incredible is solid and has both root and good roms available. Root is likely to be required for customizing, and a good solid custom rom is, imo, better than the stock roms.
*Is CM seriously stable and reliable on the Incredible? Is there something else that might be better?
*Are there still issues with the two different displays? It seems that slcd (?) is all Verizon has now but originally there were display driver issues?
*All of the info I have seen on rooting the Incredible is based on computers running windows, which I do not use. Is there any reason that the ADB commands will not work using a linux machine for the process? (Some weird usb connection stuff?)
Minor issues are not a problem, but this user is not exactly the "bleeding edge" type. If the phone is not going to be reliable and glitch free 99% of the time, I'd be better off letting them just choose something they like and leaving it stuck with the constraints Verizon hobbles it with... but I hate doing that. My Droid has been perfect ALL of the time unless, of course, I was trying brand new hacks or mods.
As long as a rooted and rommed Incredible has similar reliablity I have no problem with fixing it once or twice a year.
Thanks in advance for any and all advice.
Im running 6.1 cm on mine with evolution radio. It runs great with no issues at all!! Just make sure you root with custom recovery image. As far as Linux, idk. I use Win 7.

I cannot speak on your other quesions.... but, The Linux version of the Android SDK (with adb) can be had from Google and works exactly as its Windows counterpart... only better as there is no need to futz with ish drivers and whatnot, for that reason I actually prefer it.

Thanks for the responses, guys.
I had figured that linux adb would be just fine, if not better. I am somewhat familiar with it from all of the other stuff I have messed with; I was just suspicious since I saw ZERO references to rooting an Incredible from linux.
Looks like she'll be getting an Incredible then.
No issues from Linux or OSX here. I think the only reason that you see most of the instructions based for Windows is just like any other - it's what the majority of people run.
I will say though that trying to do work on the Dinc from a Windows VM in OSX via VMWare Fusion can and is a bit of a challenge
Just a recommendation for two nice and stable ROMs: SkyRaider 3.5 and Myn's Warm Two Point Two RLS4. I first ran SkyRaider for a few months, then switched to Myn's about a month ago; absolutely no problems with either. Both are highly recommended. Not exactly sure if either are SLCD compatible (as I am an AMOLED user), so make a nandroid before trying either. Good luck, and if you decide to get an Incredible, enjoy!

What can I say?
It's been a long year....
And it has been just about one year exactly, now that Mr. Not Letting Me Get Away With Being Stupid called me on the time frame- early December-ish.
Thanks for the responses, folks- after doing some more research and finding a deal with Verizon ended up ordering a pair of Droid 2 Global phones for the sum of $171.xx with tax and shipping.
They may not be quite as mod-friendly as I would have liked, but I think they'll be good.

[Q] So doing a clean sweep of my Incredible...

Due to a recent little issue I am having I am doing a clean sweep of my HTC Incredible.
I am currently on CM7, with radio .28 , rooted , unrevoked forever, busybox... you know... things and stuff and things...
I am looking for suggestions for what I should do next.
What ROM?
What Kernel?
What Radio?
I am going on a LONG plane trip very soon so maximizing battery life would be nice without sacrificing too much in the way of power. Or heck, go for max power and show me how to REALLY crank this thing up. Just go with what you feel is the optimal setup so I can give it a try. Thanks for your input!

Well i'm surprised at the amount of replies this has gotten. I've already done the first guy's suggestion and I will say it's pretty snappy. I am doing backups of each setup idea and will post my thoughts on each one.
The first one with Rom-Incredible Reingeneered Z is really quick to respond and has lots of nice features. I'm just not crazy about sense is all. I'd like to smash this with an AOSP ROM for the gallery, launcher, and graphical effects that something like CyanogenMod has. However... I suppose the "Pretty effects" are what causes it to not respond AS quickly. For sure it's being saved away for further toying with ( yay for 16gb memory card! lol )

I'm not sure what graphic effects you're looking for, but Cyanogen has the fancy TV-off animation and when paired with ADW EX, you have fancy screen transitions as well. BTW, CyanogenMod 7.0.2 just came out, I'm flashing it now, I'll see if it's as stable as the latest nightlies.

[Q] I'm surprised devs are still working on this device

I meandered on to the development section and was quite surprised to see such recent ROMS and developers working on a cell phone that is turning 3 years old in 5 months. Many EVO buyers have had their contracts expire and are able to upgrade to a new phone. There are much faster phones out there, with better specs that are possibly more interesting to develop for, because you might reach a larger user base. My question to the Devs is why are you sticking to the original EVO? Don't get me wrong, I am a current original EVO owner myself so by all means, keep up the good work, just curious as to why you stuck to such an old device.
Simple answer is its fun! Its a great way to get practice and many devs have friends in the forum. So why walk away completely? If you still have it, you can test away on things you try to build.

It's actually SDX Developers...and yes the Moment was the "Evo" of it's time, sadly however, it's time has passed. I'm a new convert over to XDA from SDX, having to give last rites to my Moment a month ago. Really only one active ROM still being worked on (UberMoment 1.6 - props to TheTehk17 for hanging in there :good: ). They never got a GB Rom fully functional (CM7 was close), all dev was, and still is, Froyo. Major hardware limitations and lack of support will probably keep any further ROM upgrades forthcoming.
Inherited an OG to use for now - great to see all the work being done! Waiting for the arrival of the S4 or M7 for upgrade, until then enjoying the plethora of ROM's available!
Upon upgrade, I will be passing the OG on to any dev here who will continue to put it to good use!

Yeah, I never thought the Moment could successfully run Froyo, unless there was a hybrid Froyo/GB Rom. I dev'd a nice ROM for the Moment, but I think I took all the links down a few months ago.

The devs did a pretty good job porting over Froyo ROMs from the Intercept and Transform, and got those pretty functional. Otherwise, the phone would have been stuck on 2.1 Eclair! As mentioned, they have a somewhat working CM7 - buggy, but it does boot up.! The dev that ported that moved on leaving no one to work out the kinks.
So, for me, I'm like a kid in a candy store with not only GB Roms, but ICS, JB, AOSP.......and Sense too! Hell, I'm in hog heaven
lol. yeah, you can flash a different ROM every day for a year, going back to 2.1 if you wanted to

lol - I might have to hold out on that upgrade until I get this "flashing" urge under control..........
Will be interesting to see when the S4/M7 debuts, how long it takes to get dev going on each
i'm glad dev's have kept this phone up to date its alot of fun

Firefox OS on SGH-T989

The Samsung Galaxy S2 is actually listed by Mozilla as a supported device for Firefox OS....
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Firefox_OS/Firefox_OS_build_prerequisites
... with one important note:
Samsung Galaxy S2
The only model that works is the i9100; no other variants are officially compatible. (i9100P might work, since the only change is a NFC chip added)

Does this mean our SGH-T989 will not be compatible? Has anyone actually tried Firefox OS with our model?
If someone tried it, there would probably be a thread on it somewhere. About it working on our devices, just take a step back and think, can we run i9000 roms? Our phones and the i9000 are pretty different and I doubt Mozilla would go out of their way to get a t989 and do the work themselves, since our phone isnt International and only sold in a handful or markets. Can it be made to work on our phones? Possibly, with a knowledgeable Dev doing the work, and even then who knows.
The OS as a whole seems to be still in a "beta" form so its not ready yet for the consumer so I doubt anyone would do all the work to port it over to have a half assed OS on their phones, but possibly with time, when the OS is good to go for the market someone will do the leg work to port it over to our phones, but I probably wouldnt hold my breath.

You could say that. I personally think it was beta back in the Gingerbread days, and ICS was a huge improvement and JB is the topping to the ice cream sandwich lol, imo JB is like rc, its a finished product, it can only get better.

Then sooo were iOS 1,2 and 3 lol. You guys just say that because even in the 2.x days android was faaaaar lagging behind iOS in both the software AND hardware requirements. Jellybean was the first rendition to properly render GUI elements using the GPU (ICS started it, wasn't complete though) hence the notorious "android lag.". IOS was smooth from the start, powervmr .
That being said, I personally dislike Apple products, go figure

don728871 said that Android is still a Beta. In a sense, that is true. It's a work in progress that will probably not end. Ever. In that sense, it is still a beta as it also takes in data and user submitted reviews about their issues, likes, dislikes and the such to make it better and better and better.
Now, for Firefox OS, I'd consider it more of a pre-release alpha. They've got the concept down, they've got a working-ish OS for the most part but yes, like you said, it's a half assed ish OS for the most part and probably, nobody would use this as their daily driver until a stable beta (after extensive testing, updates and stuff) is released.
So for now, nothing to expect here. Let's move along shall we?
Wait a sec, let's look at iOS.
Now, yeah, people say it's lag free. True-ish for the most part...
but let's look at it from another perspective. Has iOS 6 changed in any way?
Yeah, I guess in optimization and whatnot but come on, what OS has changed so dramatically?
Evolved in such a way that it's already awesome but it just keeps getting better and better?
That, as we all know, is android. From Cupcake, we've come a long way to Jelly Bean.
That was 4 years ago. Took a while...
Now knowing how other OS's evolved,
it is now safe to assume that Firefox OS isn't going anywhere far for now.

Excellent point! Android Evolution has been gradual and drastic ... but still, when it did pick up, it was different. I think if Firefox OS can include a captivating element right from the start, it can make an impact. However, I don't see it being too radically remarkable.
